The Sun is an almost endless source of energy that radiates over the Earth every day. This great heat lamp in the sky can help us gather the solar energy we need to further humanity towards their new goals. The frontier for our use of solar energy has opened up and every day brings a new idea or invention.

Being a student, I get my fair share of information from the faculty professors about the current state of our solar energy consumption and it brings me comfort to know that people have created several new inventions and concepts for the gathering of this endless source of heat and light. Since I am all for the “green revolution” in technology and architecture I will promote some of those concepts in this essay.

Photovoltaic Systems:

The photovoltaic systems for gathering solar energy uses several components in its arrangement. The most notable feature of this system is the solar panel. The panel collects the solar energy and turns it into DC current and then the solar energy converter transforms this into usable AC current. The system is practical and it has appeared on many households and businesses all over the world.

Concentrated Solar Power:

This system is for transforming solar energy into electricity utilizes the heath in sunlight. The system is based around the use of many reflective mirrors that concentrate the solar energy into one beam of light that is then used to power a classical power plant with turbines. This system is implemented in large-scale operations and it is effective in producing vast amounts of electricity like conventional power plants.

Solar Water Heating:

Solar water heating is one of those systems for solar energy collection that has been around for ages. Well, at least as long as we have been using different types of vessel, like black barrels, to heat up the water for every- day use. The new systems have gone through a technological remake and they are successfully utilized in many homes to heat all the water for the household. The solar energy is collected through solar heat transformers that then heat up water in the system.

Conclusion:

Solar energy is a blessing from the sky that can help us transform urban life and make more sustainable houses and families. The systems mentioned here are the main principles behind our use of solar energy and they are being worked on and transformed every day so we can use the power of the sun to its full potential.

The energy which we receive from the Sun in the form of heat and light is called solar energy. It is the driver of everything from the Earth’s climate to all forms of life on the Earth. Since the ancient times, we have been using solar energy for our own use. However, the researchers feel that we are yet to optimally use the solar energy.

Use of Solar Energy in Ancient Era:

The ancient people known to have executed the utilization of solar energy on a substantial scale were the Ancient Egyptians, who utilized it to warm their homes. They structured and assembled their homes with the goal that the structures hid away the sun’s warmth amid the day and afterwards discharged it around evening time. Their building procedures kept their homes hotter during the evening, as well as controlled a cooler temperature inside on hot days. Romans and Native Americans both utilized comparable innovations to warm their homes using solar energy, and additionally different sorts of structures like Roman bathhouses.

In the third century B.C., the Greeks left a mark on the world not for utilizing solar energy for local solace, but rather, supposedly, as a weapon of mass destruction. As per the researchers, a Roman maritime power was cruising to remove the Greek bastion of Syracuse. With the assistance of the Archimedes, the inventor, the Greeks are accounted for to have utilized exceptionally cleaned metal shields as mirrors to enhance and centre the beams of the sun and set fire to the propelling boats.

Advantages of Solar Energy:

The major advantage of solar energy is that it is a renewable source. It is available to us as long as the Sun is present which is expected to be for another 5 billion years. Hence it can be used abundantly for the benefit of everyone.

Secondly, the use of solar energy can also help us reduce our electricity bills. Moreover, the use of solar energy can help us reduce our dependency on non-renewable sources of energy such as coal and petroleum. Also, solar energy can be utilized for different purposes. Another advantage of solar energy is that it is a clean fuel. Use of solar energy does not cause any pollution and hence it is not harmful to the environment. Use of solar energy can help us reduce air pollution which for India, is a primary concern as on date. Also, India is a country having abundant sunlight all-round the year, hence, tapping of sunlight is not an issue. Of late, there has been an increase in the use of solar energy by the government as well as individuals. Efforts are on to reduce the setup costs of solar plants so as to help people move towards this clean and efficient fuel. Solar energy is the future of the country as it is the only energy which can help us overcome the environmental and energy-related issues our country has been facing since the last few years.

What is Solar Energy?

Solar energy is the energy contained in the sunlight in the form of photons. Life on earth is not possible without solar energy. All the microorganisms and single-celled organisms came into existence with the help of solar energy.

Plants have been using solar energy since the beginning. The leaves trap the solar energy and use it in the process of photosynthesis to prepare food. In this way, solar energy plays an essential role in the functioning of the food pyramid.

Solar energy is used by all the organisms, including both plants and animals. And human beings are no exceptions. First of all, the daylight brought in by the solar energy drives away the darkness and helps us finish all the chores easily.

Solar energy produces enough heat to dry out the washed clothes. It keeps us warm in the winters. Solar energy also plays an important role in diminishing the humidity and killing the harmful germs. Morning sunlight is known to strengthen our bones, improve our immunity, and help control many skin ailments.

On a larger level, solar energy has multiple other uses. For instance, concentrated solar power allows us to cook food. By converting the sunlight into accumulated solar energy, we can also produce electricity and charge our electrical devices.

Plus Points of Using Solar Energy:

But why prefer solar power when we have other sources of energy? The reasons are quite convincing actually. To begin with, the sun is a ball of fire. This fire is a result of the fusion reaction. That means, it is not going to burn out for millions of years to come.

Solar energy is a renewable form of energy which keeps getting replenished. So, it is safe to say that, depending on solar power would not deplete the earth of its natural resources. Moreover, using solar energy is an eco-friendly option for all of us, as it doesn’t cause any kind of pollution.

Solar energy offers as a great substitute to the other non-renewable resources, such as coal, wood, mineral oils, fossil fuels, etc. This puts a lesser load on the planet earth in various ways. Non-renewable sources are already getting exhausted at a rapid rate. They also cause pollution and hamper the life of all the living beings.

Most of all, meeting the needs with solar power also costs less. It is a cheaper and economical source of energy when compared to other conventional forms of energy. This is the reason why many developed countries are finally adopting a lifestyle based on solar power.

Methods to Use Solar Energy:

Solar energy can be trapped in several ways. One of the most effective technology is the use of solar power plants. These power plants are specifically designed for the purpose of electricity production on a larger level. Other appliances and technologies that work on solar energy are solar cookers, solar heaters, and solar cells. All these three types of solar appliances would be discussed one by one.

Starting with the solar cookers, these are the most revolutionary methods of cooking nowadays. Instead of using conventional fuels, such as gas, kerosene, or wood, solar cookers plainly work with the help of sunlight. These cookers have a glass lid which captures and concentrates all the sun rays to produce heat and cook food. Solar cookers are eco-friendly and economical means of cooking.

Solar heaters are the appliances that help in heating the water with solar energy. These devices work on the fluid-based technology. That means, either air or an anti-freezing fluid is put into the collector so that the water can be heated without any electricity.

The last and the third form is solar cells. These solar cells directly convert the solar light into electricity. Solar cells are especially popular in the areas where the supply from the power grid is less available. Many calculators, wrist watches, and similar systems work with this technology. Not only that, but the electricity produced by solar panels can also be stored in rechargeable solar batteries.

Solar energy is the future of the next generation. It is a safer, greener, and economical way of living life. It can be replenished and is a renewable source of energy which causes no pollution in the atmosphere. Solar energy also puts less burden on the other forms of non-renewable resources and protects the earth from various types of pollutions. As much as possible, we should all switch to using appliances based on solar power and save our planet earth.

Introduction:

Solar energy can simply be said to be the radiant heat and light that the sun produces and is harnessed through the use of a variety of technologies that are ever-evolving like photovoltaic, solar heating, solar architecture, thermal energy, artificial photosynthesis and power plants of molten salt. Solar energy is one very vital renewable energy source and the technologies of solar energy are widely categorized as either active solar or passive solar based on the manner of capture and distribution of the solar energy and how the solar energy is converted to solar power.

The techniques of active solar include using water heating that is solar, solar power that is concentrated and photovoltaic systems to harness solar energy. The techniques of passive solar include the design of space that will circulate air naturally, selection of materials that have light dispersing or thermal mass properties that are favourable and the orientation of a building towards the sun. Solar energy is a very appealing electricity source because solar energy is readily available in large magnitude. Research has shown that while the total consumption of energy all over the world annually is 559.8 EJ, the potential energy generation of solar energy is 1.575 EJ to 49,837 EJ which is a lot more than what is needed.

Potential of Solar Energy:

The potential of solar energy which can be used is quite different from the quantity of solar energy that is present close to the planet earth’s surface as a result of different factors like time variation, geography, available land and cloud cover, all limit the quantity of energy that can be acquired through solar sources.

The potential of solar energy is affected by geography because all the areas very close to equator get a greater quantity of radiation from the sun. The potential of solar energy can be greatly improved following the sun’s position through using photovoltaic in the areas that are not close to equator.

The potential of solar energy is affected by time variation because there is usually little or no solar radiation during the night on the earth’s surface that the solar panels can absorb. The potential of solar energy is also affected by cloud cover because incoming light can be blocked by clouds preventing it from reaching the earth’s surface from sun and this goes a long way in the reduction of the available light that solar cells can use.

The potential of solar energy is also affected by land availability because we can only set solar panels up for use on the land usually not in use and very suitable for the foxing of solar panels. It has been discovered that very suitable place to fix solar cells are roofs, since a lot of people have come to the realization that they also can directly collect energy from their houses through this means. We can also establish solar plants on areas of land which are not in use for business or other things.

Urban Planning and Architecture:

The design of buildings has been greatly influenced by sunlight ever since architectural history began. Methods of urban planning and solar architecture that is advanced were first used by the Chinese and Greeks; they made the orientation of the buildings they constructed to the south so that warmth and light can be provided.

Features of solar architecture like compact proportion ( ratio of surface area and volume), orientation, thermal mass and selective shading are all tailored to that particular environment and local climate so that spaces that are well can be produced and the building remains in a temperature range that is very comfortable. Ventilation systems, heating and solar lighting are all tied together in the solar design.

In the times of global warming and climate change as a result of the pollution of the atmosphere through the emission of smoke from the burning of fossil fuels, it is very important that alternative sources of energy that are renewable are gotten. Solar energy is one energy source that does not negatively affect the environment and cannot be exhausted.

When we develop solar energy and its technologies that are clean, inexhaustible and affordable, we are bound to enjoy benefits that are huge and long-term. Solar energy can go a very long way in increasing the energy security of a country as a result of reliance on inexhaustible, indigenous and largely non-import resource, reduce pollution, enhance sustainability, lower the prices of fossil fuels and lower the price and cost of curbing global warming. All of these advantages of solar energy are global.

Solar energy is basically energy from the sun and is received on earth and can be transformed into other forms of energy. Solar energy is usually used to generate electric or thermal energy. The sun provides energy that influences the climate on earth and enables the sustenance of all forms of life. It is a natural source of energy and is freely available. Research into solar energy has been done in attempts to discover methods of harvesting energy from the sun and utilizing it. Some forms of energy that are already in use are in existence due to the sun. An example is wind energy, which is derived from the wind yet in nature, wind develops due to the highs and lows in temperature. The sun plays a central role in terms of energy that is being used in the world.

Applications of Solar Energy:

In the modern world, there are important applications of solar energy that are being used. Applications of solar energy are both domestic and industrial. Domestic uses of solar energy do not require harvesting large amount of solar energy compared to the industrial uses. Domestic applications include solar cookers, solar hot water systems and air conditioners whereas industrial applications of solar energy include electricity production.

Solar cooking is one of the applications in which solar energy is harvested and redirected to produce heat energy for cooking purposes. Solar water heaters have become common application that is being used everywhere. Water heating systems have been designed such that they harvest heating energy from the sun. The same principles have been applied in air conditioning, space cooling and heating and in solar vehicles. There has been generation of electricity from solar energy that enables lighting and other functions.

With the constantly growing advancements in technology and industrialization, there will be increased discovery in the applications of solar energy. Solar energy can pretty much be important in everything it is just that we do not know how to apply it.

Solar energy has been used widely across the world and its importance has been realized. Solar energy is inexhaustible and renewable. Solar energy will never get depleted at any point in life and that is why it is an important source of energy in the world. The applications of solar energy continually use energy that is renewable without much struggle.

Solar energy is free of expenses because it is naturally acquired. The only costs incurred are those related to the applications and structuring. However, the cost of these equipment is lower compared to the cost of using other sources of energy.

Solar energy does not cause any form of environmental pollution. The process of generating solar energy does not involve any chemicals or products that may cause the pollution of the environment. It is a clean form of energy and its use promotes environmental cleanliness.

Due to the ease of availability of solar energy, it can be used in both rural and urban areas. In rural areas, people are usually challenged because installation of electricity is a problem but with the use of solar energy, most people have an access to electricity and saves on the cost.

Disadvantages of Solar Energy:

In as much as solar energy is important and advantageous, there are some factors that render it disadvantageous. One of those factors is the limitation to daytime use. Solar energy can only be maximized during the day because the sun shines at daytime. Also, the equipment used to harvest solar energy are expensive and delicate. Thee equipment include panels, solar collectors and solar cells. All these equipment are very delicate and require much care to avoid damaging them because the replacement costs are high.

Solar energy require large spaces to collect enough energy for use in various solar applications. The collection of solar energy has to cover a large area through the use of large solar panels, solar collectors and cells so that more adequate energy can be collected.

Solar energy is dependent on the sun and cannot be deployed where there is minimal sunshine. This means that solar energy is limited to areas with ample amounts of sun energy. During seasons like winter, the use of solar energy is totally impossible and therefore other forms of energy have to be sought.

Solar energy can never be an independent source of energy in the world. It is basically an alternative source of energy upon convenience i.e., during summer, specifically during the day. In your summer house you can opt to use solar energy and then use electricity during the rest of the seasons. For those countries who do not experience seasonal changes in climate, it is very convenient and it can be an independent source of energy for them.

The use of solar energy is specific to devices that do not consume large amounts of current e.g., in calculators.

Solar energy is an important source of energy. Advancements in technology has led to innovations of applications of solar energy that are of great help to human beings. It has been a great era of modern society whereby solar energy has been appreciated through its applications. The uses of solar energy are similar to those of other sources of energy. Everything has its pros and cons and solar energy is no different. The pros of solar energy outweigh the cons and that is why its use has been maintained over the years. However, the limitations of solar energy should not be ignored. These limitations are somehow disrupting the expansion of solar energy use in the world. It is important that solar energy is used widely as a form of energy because of its environmental-friendly characteristic. Other forms of energy especially fuels highly pollute the environment. Not only does saving the environment a priority in using solar energy but also the fact that solar energy is free, renewable and inexhaustible. What a great deal?

Solar Energy Essay

All life on the planet depends directly or indirectly on solar energy, which we receive from the sun in the form of heat and light. It has some advantages and disadvantages. Here are a few sample essays on ‘solar energy.’

100 Words Essay On Solar Energy

Solar energy is the energy we derive from the sun through heat and light. Its production and use have no detrimental effects on the environment, making it "clean" and "green" energy. In our daily lives, solar energy is used for various purposes, including heating water in considerable reservoirs to conserve resources and electricity, cooking food in solar cookers, and generating electricity. Its applications can be a blessing for people living in remote corners of the world. Solar energy will be a better option for supplying energy needs in the future, even though its use is currently restricted and not widely adopted by the general public.

Solar Energy Essay

200 Words Essay On Solar Energy

All life on Earth receives its energy from the sun. Solar energy is what we get from the sun; it comes to us in the form of tiny light particles called photons. All types of microorganisms and single-celled organisms were created with the help of solar energy, and plants have been using this energy since the beginning of time. As a result, every living thing on Earth is directly or indirectly dependent on the sun. Since solar energy is entirely renewable, it is available as long as there is sunlight. Because no harmful gases, chemicals, or fly ash are produced, it is also pollution-free. Using photovoltaic cells, solar energy can be transformed into thermal or electrical energy. Solar energy has no production costs.

But there are some drawbacks to solar energy. For instance, solar energy can be harnessed for various activities only during the day when there is sufficient sunlight available. When compared to conventional power plants with the same capacity, the cost of installing solar energy panels is very high, and the amount of energy produced here is very low. However, as science and technology advance, we can harness solar energy and use it as our primary energy source.

500 Words Essay On Solar Energy

Life on earth is impossible without the sun and the energy it generates. Humans are no different from other organisms on this planet in that we are entirely dependent on the sun's energy, also known as solar energy; this dependence dates back to the beginning of time.

Solar Energy

We have the privilege of using solar energy as long as the sun is shining because it is a renewable power source. It is utilised by photosynthetic organisms like plants and some bacteria as "producers," who then supply food to other organisms at all levels of the food chain, known as "consumers." Reptiles and other cold-blooded animals run on solar energy daily. Humans have utilised it for many purposes, such as cooking and drying, and in the present day, we are using it to produce electricity.

Thermal radiation and light energy are provided by solar energy as well. These two energies are equally crucial.

The Earth is surrounded by solar radiation, which causes the oceans (which cover 71% of the planet) to evaporate due to the heat radiation. The vapour then circulates in a process known as the "water cycle," which in turn controls the planet's temperature. Solar energy also melts ice caps and glaciers, releasing potable water into the environment. Since everyone relies on light to keep things moving, the use of light is inexplicable.

There are several benefits and drawbacks to using solar energy.

Advantages of Solar Energy

Solar energy is completely free to use and requires no work to produce.

Solar energy applications can be used to generate electricity in rural and remote areas where conventional electricity is difficult to come by.

The harnessing and production of this clean energy have no adverse effects on the environment.

We have an endless supply of this energy as long as the sun continues to shine. It is entirely renewable. This is a short time compared to fossil fuel, which lasts for only 20 to 30 years.

Solar energy can charge calculators and solar cell batteries in large quantities.

Disadvantages of Solar Energy

Although it is free to produce, the machinery needed to harness it is quite expensive.

The maintenance and labour charges are costly for the installations.

For the installations to even produce enough energy, a very large area is needed.

Compared to traditional energy sources like fossil fuels, the amount of energy that has been harnessed is minimal.

Solar energy can be harnessed for various purposes during the day, when there is a lot of sunlight available.

My Experience With Solar Energy

I recently went to a science fair where I saw various solar energy projects, such as photoreceptive power cells, solar water heaters, and solar cookers, that produced electricity and used other types of solar energy. I realised there that solar energy has a broad range of applications, is made at a very low cost per individual, and protects our environment from pollution. It was also a good idea to encourage my village to use solar water heaters and panels. And finally, to promote clean energy, we must all move forward with the same concept.

Introduction.

Solar energy, a renewable and abundant source of power, is harnessed from the sun’s rays. Its utilization has been a topic of global interest due to the escalating need for sustainable energy sources.

Working of Solar Energy

Solar power works by converting sunlight into electricity. Photovoltaic (PV) cells, composed of semiconductor materials, absorb photons from sunlight. This absorption instigates an electric field across the layers, causing electricity to flow.

Advantages of Solar Energy

Solar energy offers numerous benefits. It is a renewable resource, unlike fossil fuels which are finite. It reduces electricity bills as sunlight is free. Moreover, solar power systems can sell surplus energy back to the grid. It also has minimal environmental impact, producing no greenhouse gases during operation.

Challenges in Solar Energy

Despite its advantages, solar energy has some obstacles. The initial cost of solar panels and installation is high, though it pays off over time. Solar power is also dependent on weather conditions and daylight hours, making it less reliable in certain regions or times.

Future of Solar Energy

The future of solar energy is promising. With advancements in technology, the efficiency of solar panels is improving, and costs are decreasing. Researchers are exploring ways to store solar energy effectively, making it more reliable.

Solar energy, a clean and renewable source of power, holds immense potential in mitigating our dependence on fossil fuels. Despite challenges, its future is bright, promising a sustainable energy future.

500 Words Essay on Solar Energy

Introduction: embracing the sun.

Solar energy, the abundant, clean, and renewable source of power, is the beacon of hope in our quest for sustainable energy solutions. It is harnessed using a variety of technologies, such as solar photovoltaic cells and solar thermal collectors, which convert the sun’s rays into usable electricity or heat.

The Science Behind Solar Energy

The sun emits photons, which are particles of light. When these photons hit a solar cell, they knock electrons loose from their atoms. When conductors are attached to the positive and negative sides of a cell, it forms an electrical circuit. When electrons flow through such a circuit, they generate electricity. This process of converting light (photons) to electricity (voltage) is called the photovoltaic effect.

Solar energy is a sustainable choice as it reduces reliance on fossil fuels, which are finite resources. It mitigates the harmful emissions that contribute to climate change, promotes energy independence, and can be deployed across the globe. Moreover, the cost of solar panels has decreased dramatically over the past decades, making it an increasingly affordable option for individuals and businesses.

Challenges in Harnessing Solar Energy

Despite its numerous advantages, solar energy is not without its challenges. The most significant constraint is the intermittent nature of solar power. Solar energy production is dependent on sunlight, which is not available during the night and can be less reliable during cloudy weather or in less sunny regions. To counter this, energy storage systems such as batteries are used, but these can add significant costs and technical complexities.

The Future of Solar Energy

As technology continues to advance, the efficiency of solar energy systems will undoubtedly improve. A promising area of research is perovskite solar cells, which are potentially cheaper and more efficient than current silicon-based cells. Moreover, the integration of solar power with other renewable sources and the development of smart grids can help overcome the issues of intermittency.

Conclusion: Towards a Solar-Powered Future

Solar energy holds immense promise for a sustainable future. The challenges it faces are not insurmountable, and with continued research and innovation, solar power could become a mainstay of global energy production. It is incumbent upon us, as a society, to continue to explore and invest in this clean, renewable source of power.

Despite the obstacles, the benefits of solar energy far outweigh its drawbacks. Its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, provide energy security, and create jobs, all while harnessing a resource that is both abundant and free, makes it an essential component of our sustainable energy future.

Solar Energy

Solar energy is created by nuclear fusion that takes place in the sun. It is necessary for life on Earth, and can be harvested for human uses such as electricity.

Solar energy is any type of energy generated by the sun . Solar energy is created by nuclear fusion that takes place in the sun. Fusion occurs when protons of hydrogen atoms violently collide in the sun’s core and fuse to create a helium atom. This process, known as a PP (proton-proton) chain reaction, emits an enormous amount of energy. In its core, the sun fuses about 620 million metric tons of hydrogen every second. The PP chain reaction occurs in other stars that are about the size of our sun, and provides them with continuous energy and heat. The temperature for these stars is around 4 million degrees on the Kelvin scale (about 4 million degrees Celsius, 7 million degrees Fahrenheit). In stars that are about 1.3 times bigger than the sun, the CNO cycle drives the creation of energy. The CNO cycle also converts hydrogen to helium, but relies on carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen (C, N, and O) to do so. Currently , less than two percent of the sun’s energy is created by the CNO cycle. Nuclear fusion by the PP chain reaction or CNO cycle releases tremendous amounts of energy in the form of waves and particles. Solar energy is constantly flowing away from the sun and throughout the solar system . Solar energy warms Earth, causes wind and weather , and sustains plant and animal life. The energy, heat, and light from the sun flow away in the form of electromagnetic radiation (EMR). The electromagnetic spectrum exists as waves of different frequencies and wavelengths. The frequency of a wave represents how many times the wave repeats itself in a certain unit of time. Waves with very short wavelengths repeat themselves several times in a given unit of time, so they are high-frequency. In contrast, low-frequency waves have much longer wavelengths. The vast majority of electromagnetic waves are invisible to us. The most high-frequency waves emitted by the sun are gamma rays, X-rays, and ultraviolet radiation (UV rays). The most harmful UV rays are almost completely absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere . Less potent UV rays travel through the atmosphere, and can cause sunburn. The sun also emits infrared radiation , whose waves are much lower-frequency. Most heat from the sun arrives as infrared energy. Sandwiched between infrared and UV is the visible spectrum, which contains all the colors we see on Earth. The color red has the longest wavelengths (closest to infrared), and violet (closest to UV) the shortest. Natural Solar Energy Greenhouse Effect The infrared, visible, and UV waves that reach Earth take part in a process of warming the planet and making life possible—the so-called “greenhouse effect.” About 30 percent of the solar energy that reaches Earth is reflected back into space. The rest is absorbed into Earth’s atmosphere. The radiation warms Earth’s surface, and the surface radiates some of the energy back out in the form of infrared waves. As they rise through the atmosphere, they are intercepted by greenhouse gases , such as water vapor and carbon dioxide.

Greenhouse gases trap the heat that reflects back up into the atmosphere. In this way, they act like the glass walls of a greenhouse. This greenhouse effect keeps Earth warm enough to sustain life. Photosynthesis Almost all life on Earth relies on solar energy for food, either directly or indirectly. Producers rely directly on solar energy. They absorb sunlight and convert it into nutrients through a process called photosynthesis. Producers, also called autotrophs , include plants, algae, bacteria, and fungi. Autotrophs are the foundation of the food web . Consumers rely on producers for nutrients. Herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and detritivores rely on solar energy indirectly. Herbivores eat plants and other producers. Carnivores and omnivores eat both producers and herbivores. Detritivores decompose plant and animal matter by consuming it. Fossil Fuels Photosynthesis is also responsible for all of the fossil fuels on Earth. Scientists estimate that about three billion years ago, the first autotrophs evolved in aquatic settings. Sunlight allowed plant life to thrive and evolve. After the autotrophs died, they decomposed and shifted deeper into the Earth, sometimes thousands of meters. This process continued for millions of years. Under intense pressure and high temperatures, these remains became what we know as fossil fuels. Microorganisms became petroleum, natural gas, and coal. People have developed processes for extracting these fossil fuels and using them for energy. However, fossil fuels are a nonrenewable resource . They take millions of years to form. Harnessing Solar Energy Solar energy is a renewable resource , and many technologies can harvest it directly for use in homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals. Some solar energy technologies include photovoltaic cells and panels, concentrated solar energy , and solar architecture . There are different ways of capturing solar radiation and converting it into usable energy. The methods use either active solar energy or passive solar energy . Active solar technologies use electrical or mechanical devices to actively convert solar energy into another form of energy, most often heat or electricity. Passive solar technologies do not use any external devices. Instead, they take advantage of the local climate to heat structures during the winter, and reflect heat during the summer. Photovoltaics Photovoltaics is a form of active solar technology that was discovered in 1839 by 19-year-old French physicist Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel. Becquerel discovered that when he placed silver-chloride in an acidic solution and exposed it to sunlight, the platinum electrodes attached to it generated an electric current. This process of generating electricity directly from solar radiation is called the photovoltaic effect, or photovoltaics.

Today, photovoltaics is probably the most familiar way to harness solar energy. Photovoltaic arrays usually involve solar panels , a collection of dozens or even hundreds of solar cells. Each solar cell contains a semiconductor , usually made of silicon. When the semiconductor absorbs sunlight, it knocks electrons loose. An electrical field directs these loose electrons into an electric current, flowing in one direction. Metal contacts at the top and bottom of a solar cell direct that current to an external object. The external object can be as small as a solar-powered calculator or as large as a power station. Photovoltaics was first widely used on spacecraft. Many satellites , including the International Space Station (ISS), feature wide, reflective “wings” of solar panels. The ISS has two solar array wings (SAWs), each using about 33,000 solar cells. These photovoltaic cells supply all electricity to the ISS, allowing astronauts to operate the station, safely live in space for months at a time, and conduct scientific and engineering experiments. Photovoltaic power stations have been built all over the world. The largest stations are in the United States, India, and China. These power stations emit hundreds of megawatts of electricity, used to supply homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals. Photovoltaic technology can also be installed on a smaller scale. Solar panels and cells can be fixed to the roofs or exterior walls of buildings, supplying electricity for the structure. They can be placed along roads to light highways. Solar cells are small enough to power even smaller devices, such as calculators, parking meters, trash compactors, and water pumps. Concentrated Solar Energy Another type of active solar technology is concentrated solar energy or concentrated solar power (CSP). CSP technology uses lenses and mirrors to focus (concentrate) sunlight from a large area into a much smaller area. This intense area of radiation heats a fluid, which in turn generates electricity or fuels another process. Solar furnaces are an example of concentrated solar power. There are many different types of solar furnaces, including solar power towers , parabolic troughs, and Fresnel reflectors. They use the same general method to capture and convert energy. Solar power towers use heliostats , flat mirrors that turn to follow the sun’s arc through the sky. The mirrors are arranged around a central “collector tower,” and reflect sunlight into a concentrated ray of light that shines on a focal point on the tower. In previous designs of solar power towers, the concentrated sunlight heated a container of water, which produced steam that powered a turbine . More recently, some solar power towers use liquid sodium, which has a higher heat capacity and retains heat for a longer period of time. This means that the fluid not only reaches temperatures of 773 to 1,273K (500° to 1,000° C or 932° to 1,832° F), but it can continue to boil water and generate power even when the sun is not shining. Parabolic troughs and Fresnel reflectors also use CSP, but their mirrors are shaped differently. Parabolic mirrors are curved, with a shape similar to a saddle. Fresnel reflectors use flat, thin strips of mirror to capture sunlight and direct it onto a tube of liquid. Fresnel reflectors have more surface area than parabolic troughs and can concentrate the sun’s energy to about 30 times its normal intensity. Concentrated solar power plants were first developed in the 1980s. The largest facility in the world is a series of plants in Mojave Desert in the U.S. state of California. This Solar Energy Generating System (SEGS) generates more than 650 gigawatt-hours of electricity every year. Other large and effective plants have been developed in Spain and India.

Concentrated solar power can also be used on a smaller scale. It can generate heat for solar cookers , for instance. People in villages all over the world use solar cookers to boil water for sanitation and to cook food. Solar cookers provide many advantages over wood-burning stoves: They are not a fire hazard, do not produce smoke, do not require fuel, and reduce habitat loss in forests where trees would be harvested for fuel. Solar cookers also allow villagers to pursue time for education, business, health, or family during time that was previously used for gathering firewood. Solar cookers are used in areas as diverse as Chad, Israel, India, and Peru. Solar Architecture Throughout the course of a day, solar energy is part of the process of thermal convection , or the movement of heat from a warmer space to a cooler one. When the sun rises, it begins to warm objects and material on Earth. Throughout the day, these materials absorb heat from solar radiation. At night, when the sun sets and the atmosphere has cooled, the materials release their heat back into the atmosphere. Passive solar energy techniques take advantage of this natural heating and cooling process. Homes and other buildings use passive solar energy to distribute heat efficiently and inexpensively. Calculating a building’s “ thermal mass ” is an example of this. A building’s thermal mass is the bulk of material heated throughout the day. Examples of a building’s thermal mass are wood, metal, concrete, clay, stone, or mud. At night, the thermal mass releases its heat back into the room. Effective ventilation systems—hallways, windows, and air ducts—distribute the warmed air and maintain a moderate, consistent indoor temperature. Passive solar technology is often involved in the design of a building. For example, in the planning stage of construction, the engineer or architect may align the building with the sun’s daily path to receive desirable amounts of sunlight. This method takes into account the latitude , altitude , and typical cloud cover of a specific area. In addition, buildings can be constructed or retrofitted to have thermal insulation, thermal mass, or extra shading. Other examples of passive solar architecture are cool roofs, radiant barriers , and green roofs . Cool roofs are painted white, and reflect the sun’s radiation instead of absorbing it. The white surface reduces the amount of heat that reaches the interior of the building, which in turn reduces the amount of energy that is needed to cool the building. Radiant barriers work similarly to cool roofs. They provide insulation with highly reflective materials, such as aluminum foil. The foil reflects, instead of absorbs, heat, and can reduce cooling costs up to 10 percent. In addition to roofs and attics, radiant barriers may also be installed beneath floors. Green roofs are roofs that are completely covered with vegetation . They require soil and irrigation to support the plants, and a waterproof layer beneath. Green roofs not only reduce the amount of heat that is absorbed or lost, but also provide vegetation. Through photosynthesis, the plants on green roofs absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen. They filter pollutants out of rainwater and air, and offset some of the effects of energy use in that space. Green roofs have been a tradition in Scandinavia for centuries, and have recently become popular in Australia, Western Europe, Canada, and the United States. For example, the Ford Motor Company covered 42,000 square meters (450,000 square feet) of its assembly plant roofs in Dearborn, Michigan, with vegetation. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the roofs reduce stormwater runoff by absorbing several centimeters of rainfall.

Green roofs and cool roofs can also counteract the “ urban heat island ” effect. In busy cities, the temperature can be consistently higher than the surrounding areas. Many factors contribute to this: Cities are constructed of materials such as asphalt and concrete that absorb heat; tall buildings block wind and its cooling effects; and high amounts of waste heat is generated by industry, traffic, and high populations. Using the available space on the roof to plant trees, or reflecting heat with white roofs, can partially alleviate local temperature increases in urban areas. Solar Energy and People Since sunlight only shines for about half of the day in most parts of the world, solar energy technologies have to include methods of storing the energy during dark hours. Thermal mass systems use paraffin wax or various forms of salt to store the energy in the form of heat. Photovoltaic systems can send excess electricity to the local power grid , or store the energy in rechargeable batteries. There are many pros and cons to using solar energy. Advantages A major advantage to using solar energy is that it is a renewable resource. We will have a steady, limitless supply of sunlight for another five billion years. In one hour, Earth’s atmosphere receives enough sunlight to power the electricity needs of every human being on Earth for a year. Solar energy is clean. After the solar technology equipment is constructed and put in place, solar energy does not need fuel to work. It also does not emit greenhouse gases or toxic materials. Using solar energy can drastically reduce the impact we have on the environment. There are locations where solar energy is practical . Homes and buildings in areas with high amounts of sunlight and low cloud cover have the opportunity to harness the sun’s abundant energy. Solar cookers provide an excellent alternative to cooking with wood-fired stoves—on which two billion people still rely. Solar cookers provide a cleaner and safer way to sanitize water and cook food. Solar energy complements other renewable sources of energy, such as wind or hydroelectric energy . Homes or businesses that install successful solar panels can actually produce excess electricity. These homeowners or businessowners can sell energy back to the electric provider, reducing or even eliminating power bills. Disadvantages The main deterrent to using solar energy is the required equipment. Solar technology equipment is expensive. Purchasing and installing the equipment can cost tens of thousands of dollars for individual homes. Although the government often offers reduced taxes to people and businesses using solar energy, and the technology can eliminate electricity bills, the initial cost is too steep for many to consider. Solar energy equipment is also heavy. In order to retrofit or install solar panels on the roof of a building, the roof must be strong, large, and oriented toward the sun’s path. Both active and passive solar technology depend on factors that are out of our control, such as climate and cloud cover. Local areas must be studied to determine whether or not solar power would be effective in that area. Sunlight must be abundant and consistent for solar energy to be an efficient choice. In most places on Earth, sunlight’s variability makes it difficult to implement as the only source of energy.

Agua Caliente The Agua Caliente Solar Project, in Yuma, Arizona, United States, is the world's largest array of photovoltaic panels. Agua Caliente has more than five million photovoltaic modules, and generates more than 600 gigawatt-hours of electricity.

Green Chicago Millennium Park in Chicago, Illinois, United States, has one of the most expansive green roofs in the world almost 100,000 square meters (more than a million square feet). Vegetation at ground level covers 24.5 acres of an underground parking garage, and includes gardens, picnic areas, and an outdoor concert facility.

Solar Decathlon The Solar Decathlon is a biannual international event presented by the U.S. Department of Energy. Teams compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house.

Concept of Solar Energy

Sun as we know is the very reason of our existence. Without sun life on earth would not have been possible at all. That means sun is the primary and only major source of all living creatures on earth.

Solar energy is the direct energy, both heat and light energy derived from sunlight that is used by technology and converted into other useful forms to mankind.

We all know that plants prepare food by using sunlight and carbon-di-oxide and release oxygen in the process. This process is called photosynthesis. Humans require sunlight to produce vitamin ‘D’ in their bodies.

Be it directly in the form of the food we eat or indirectly in the form of its energy stored in fossil fuels, sun is the core producer, the major source of all energy we have on our planet.

This energy is making the earth bloom into a green and blue emerald like suspension in the universe.

In the present era, energy is the most precious substance which everyone is facing a shortage of.

Energy serves as the fuel not just for running industries and vehicles, it is very well required by us at home for every other necessity that we have, right from lighting to cooking etc.

The renewable and non-renewable sources of energy

Further, energy can be classified into renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Renewable are those that can be replenished and are available for many more years to come.

Among them are the wind energy, solar energy, tidal energy etc. The non- renewable energy sources are those that are depleting at a very fast rate and protective measures are being taken for their conservation.

Conventional energy sources like Coal and Fossil fuels give us our essential needs of crude oil, petrol, diesel, natural gases etc.

But their reserves are limited by the quantity. With global population growing at a tremendous rate along with rampant development, industrialization and urbanization, energy needs have definitely sky rocketed and the demand is much more than the supply levels.

They are not evenly distributed hence certain countries have advantage over others. Oil producing countries export oil to countries that have poor oil availabilities and are hence considered the hay making countries of today.

Oil prices fluctuate by the day and there is an ever increasing demand for this market now. Also, their extraction and transportation are a challenge in itself but inevitable. These non-renewable energy sources are harming our planet.

Due to burning of these fuels enormous amount of harmful gases like carbon dioxide, methane and oxides of Sulphur and nitrogen, along with toxic heavy metals and poisonous particles are released into the atmosphere.

These harmful and toxic substances in turn impact our climate and pose a threat to humans, animals and plant life alike, causing torrential and untimely rains, floods, hurricanes, acid rains etc in various parts of the world and spread fatal diseases worldwide.

These poisonsous gases are known as the “Greenhouse gases”. Global temperature rises in turn increasing the sea level and severely affecting our ecosystem.

Alternate sources of energy

It was not very late that man realized the need to look out for alternative energy sources which could be used in place of the existing sources of energy.

But care was taken to look into the lieu falls / to address problems associated with conventional sources of energy without hampering their functioning. In this search we finally realized and understood importance of solar energy.

Sun does not discriminate as a provider of energy. Having said that, it simply means sunlight is far more evenly distributed in populated regions of the world compared to fossil fuels.

We have been using the energy of sun since time immemorial for cooking, water heating and drying things.

To understand it in simple words, consider the warmth felt under sun during winters and the visibility it gives during daytime. It has been a widely accepted phenomenon by all of us.

Sunlight poses energy in the form of heat and light.

Harnessing this energy from sun by capturing its rays in the form of sunlight and converting them suitably into other forms of energy by means of science and technology can be directed into an array of use in many applications.

We are already aware that plants are the only living organisms that can convert energy from sun naturally and store it by the process of photosynthesis.

When animals eat fruits from plants, this energy gets transferred from one creature to the other and this happens in the form of a food chain. This is why you are able to perform better when who have eaten properly.

Humans are developing numerous ever-evolving technologies to capture this solar energy and store it as power, which can be relayed and used efficiently by not only living beings but machines too.

Advantages of solar energy

To be able to use solar energy in various forms requires conversion of solar energy to electrical, mechanical, and thermal and many other energy forms.

Currently photovoltaics cells, solar panels are used. With a technology driven thinking, the scientific society is enabling a better usage of the resource with maximum potential of tapping it for the betterment of the society.

Solar energy has lot of advantages – It is a renewable energy source, which means that, like the limited reserves of fossil fuels, solar energy would not get exhausted as long as humans exist on Earth.

Solar energy would continue to drive human society till many million years to come and in short sight, it is definitely not going to vanish. The better we tap the resource, the better the usage and the related applications.

To add to the advantages, solar energy opens up an avenue of clean energy, which would do the least harm to our environment.

Utilization of solar energy would not require burning the resources as incase of fossil fuels, so no poisonous gases are emitted into the air.

It also reduces pollution to a great extent, is sustainable for a long time and can also mitigate global warming crisis.

It has long term global advantage. Its availability across nations would provide self-dependence to currently energy-dependent nations and give them freedom to utilize energy with customizations and specific country needs.

Today major part of imports in developing countries is of crude oil. The global market is highly influenced by the prices of oil.

High concentration in Middle East has led to heavy dependence from other countries on countries in this region of the world for oil requirements.

Solar energy would require formal setup of employment estates. From innovation in harnessing technology to development of panels.

Infrastructure for solar park, storage of power, its distribution etc. would provide labor intensive job opportunities.

Better employment opportunities and skilled workforce is a big asset for any country as they give economy a great boost.

Society will experience a shift from conventional energy sources to renewable and clean energy sources, which will further lead to less disease occurrences and also less expenditure on health.

Our electricity bills, fuel bills would drastically reduce on account of this if solar energy sources are made more compatible and hence would become pretty affordable and cheap.

Solar enabled or electric vehicle would be used more on roads and drastic technological development and automation is the automobile industry would be witnessed.

Solar energy does not require transportation overseas. Installation is simple and widely done over rooftop, which is already in many places.

Setting up large farm is expensive initially but maintenance of solar power plants is relatively easy, affordable and efficient.

Disadvantages of solar energy resources

One can’t ignore the limitations of solar energy resources, considering the nascent stages of its harnessing technologies and implementation processes. Some of the major limitations are:

The most obvious limitation is that solar energy can only be harnessed during daytime when there is ample sunlight available. At night times, solar energy cannot be used.

During winter seasons, sunlight would be dim and mild. When it’s rainy, clouds block sunlight from penetrating and hence we would hardly receive bright sunlight for our applications enabled with solar energy.

The cost of deploying panels, collectors as well as solar cells for the generation of solar energy is very high and the manufacturing cost of the collectors and devices is also quite high initially.

Even though solar power stations are easy to build, the amount of energy harnessed here is very less compared with the output of conventional power stations of the same capacity.

Large acres of land are definitely required for the deployment of solar energy plants and panels and for capturing the energy coming from sun.

Also in places where there is no ample amount of solar energy available, it is very difficult to produce electricity from sun’s energy.

In order to overcome these hurdles, we would require technology advancements and intensified research with the aid of grants from premier educational institutions and research organizations of the country.

Above all, with commercial and large-scale success in the wide arena of Solar energy deployments, the energy crisis we face in remote areas in irrigation, transport, electricity and agriculture would be resolved.

Solar radiation is engrossed by the Earth’s terra firma surface, oceans – which wrap about 71% of the globe – and atmosphere. Hot air having evaporated water from the oceans rises, causing atmospheric circulation. Thermal energy is caused by heat or by changes in temperature.

Thermal streams or baths contain water that is naturally hot or warm. We people can use solar thermal technologies for water heating etc. to help people know more about this topic we should tell them to see essays on solar energy.

Nowadays many solar water heaters are also made which is very important. This system of solar energy is also contributing to saving electricity.

As it is reducing the use of the modern machines which need electrical energy to be operated. Also, it stops deforestation as people no longer need to cut trees for wood to warm the water. And many more reasons.

The uses of solar energy

There are many uses of solar energy. The use of solar energy is very important. Artificial photosynthesis and solar agriculture can also be done by using solar energy.

Image of Solar Energy Essay

Solar power is the alteration of sunlight into electricity, by directly using photovoltaics(PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power.

Solar energy is also used for solar warm water systems which use daylight or sunlight to heat up water. In low geographical latitudes which is below 40 degrees Celsius starting 60 to 70% of the domestic hot water exercise with temperatures equal to 60 °C know how to be provided by solar heating systems.

The most frequent types of solar water heaters are evacuated, tube collectors, and glazed flat plate collectors. These are by and large used for domestic hot water; and unglazed plastic collectors which are mainly used to heat swimming pools.

Solar cookers are also available nowadays. Solar cookers use sunlight for working or for functioning i.e. cooking, drying, etc.

Solar power is predictable to turn out to be the world’s biggest and largest source of electricity by 2040, with solar photovoltaics in addition to concentrated solar power causative sixteen and eleven percent of the overall consumption all over the globe.

Agriculture and horticulture hunt to optimize the capture of solar energy in order to optimize the efficiency of plants. Some of the techniques such as the timed planting cycles, staggered heights between rows tailored row orientation and the amalgamation of plant varieties can pick up crop yields.

While daylight or sunlight is generally well-thought-out and abundant resource, all of these help us to know the importance of solar energy in agriculture.

Some transportation means also use solar panels for supplementary power, such as for air conditioning, to keep the interior cool, which automatically reduces the fuel consumption.

In nineteen hundred seventy-five, the world’s first practical solar boat was made in England. By nineteen hundred ninety-five, passenger boats incorporating PV panels started appearing and are now used expansively

Conclusion to Solar Energy Essay: – People started to think about the use of solar energy in the latter half of the 19th century. But still, it has not covered the need for our requirement so far. In near future, it will definitely replace non-renewable sources.

Short And Long Paragraphs About Energy and its Crises

Today, we have abundant energy sources such as oil, coal, gas, and uranium. This energy is used to generate electricity for our homes, as well as other modes of transportation such as trains and planes.

What happens if there isn’t any energy available? Without transportation or lighting, among other things that require fuel or electric current to operate, the world will be very distinct from what it is now. In 1987, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was founded, with its headquarters in Vienna.

Because nuclear energy is seen as a safer and better form of energy, it is used to promote peace. The future challenge is to develop new sources of renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, that are both sustainable and affordable.

Without any form of energy, the world would be a very different place. There would be no electricity-powered transportation, lights, or electronic devices —basically nothing. This is due to the fact that all of these devices require some form of fuel or electricity to function. Thankfully, we have a variety of energy sources to choose from, which include oil, coal, gas, and uranium.

However, as our population grows and energy demand rises, we will need to find new renewable energy sources that are both sustainable and affordable. Solar and wind power are two excellent examples of renewable energy sources worth investigating.

They are both environmentally friendly and cost-effective, and they have the potential to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. So, let’s keep looking for new energy sources and working toward a more sustainable future!

Although there are numerous energy sources available, some of the most common include oil, coal, gas, and uranium. Because nuclear energy is seen as a cleaner and safer form of energy, one organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency, works to promote peace through it.

The future challenge will be to develop new renewable energy sources that are not only sustainable but also affordable, such as solar and wind power.

300 words Paragraph on Solar Energy

Solar energy is a renewable and sustainable source of power that harnesses the energy from the sun to generate electricity. It is considered one of the most promising alternative energy sources due to its abundance and the fact that it produces no greenhouse gas emissions.

There are two main types of solar energy systems: photovoltaic (PV) and thermal. PV systems use semiconductor materials to convert sunlight into electricity, while thermal systems use the sun’s energy to heat a fluid, which is then used to generate electricity. Both types of systems can be used for a variety of applications, including powering homes, businesses, and entire communities.

One of the main benefits of solar energy is that it can be used in remote locations where traditional power sources are not available. This makes it an ideal solution for powering isolated communities and providing electricity to remote areas for development. Additionally, it can also be used to power satellites, boats, and even cars.

Furthermore, solar energy is a cost-effective solution in the long run. While the initial cost of installing solar panels may be high, the cost of electricity generated by solar energy is relatively low, especially when compared to traditional fossil fuels. In addition, solar energy systems require little maintenance, which further reduces costs over time.

However, one of the downsides of solar energy is that it is dependent on weather conditions and the availability of sunlight. On cloudy or overcast days, the amount of electricity generated by solar panels is reduced. But advancements in energy storage technologies, such as batteries, can help to mitigate this issue.

Overall, solar energy is a viable and sustainable source of power that has the potential to play a significant role in meeting the world’s energy needs. With continued research and development, the efficiency and reliability of solar energy systems will improve, making them even more cost-effective and accessible.

200 words Paragraph on Wind Energy

Wind energy is a renewable and sustainable source of power that harnesses the energy from the wind to generate electricity. It is considered one of the most promising alternative energy sources due to its abundance and the fact that it produces no greenhouse gas emissions.

Wind turbines are the primary technology used to harness wind energy. These turbines have a rotor with blades that spins when wind blows, which in turn powers a generator to produce electricity. They can be used for a variety of applications, including powering homes, businesses, and entire communities.

One of the main benefits of wind energy is that it is a cost-effective solution in the long run. The cost of electricity generated by wind energy has decreased significantly in recent years, making it competitive with traditional fossil fuels. Additionally, wind energy systems require little maintenance, which further reduces costs over time.

Wind energy can also be used in remote locations, such as offshore wind farms, which can generate large amounts of electricity. Additionally, it can be used to power boats, trains, and even cars.

However, one of the downsides of wind energy is that it is dependent on wind conditions. The amount of electricity generated by wind turbines is reduced on calm days. Additionally, wind turbines can be visually unappealing and can have an impact on wildlife and birds.

Overall, wind energy is a viable and sustainable source of power that has the potential to play a significant role in meeting the world’s energy needs. With continued research and development, the efficiency and reliability of wind energy systems will improve, making them even more cost-effective and accessible.

100 words Paragraph on Green Energy

Green energy, also known as renewable energy, refers to energy sources that are sustainable and have minimal impact on the environment. This includes sources such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass energy. Green energy is considered to be a crucial solution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. It is also becoming more cost-effective, making it a competitive alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Investing in green energy not only helps to protect the environment but also creates jobs and boosts economic growth.

300 words Paragraph on Renewable Energy

Renewable energy refers to the energy sources that are sustainable and have minimal impact on the environment. These sources are replenished naturally, unlike fossil fuels which are finite resources. The most common forms of renewable energy include solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass.

Solar energy harnesses the energy from the sun to generate electricity . Photovoltaic systems convert sunlight into electricity, while thermal systems use the sun’s energy to heat a fluid, which is then used to generate electricity. Both types of systems can be used to power homes, businesses, and entire communities.

Wind energy harnesses the energy from the wind to generate electricity. Wind turbines are the primary technology used to harness wind energy. These turbines have a rotor with blades that spins when wind blows, which in turn powers a generator to produce electricity. They can be used for a variety of applications, including powering homes, businesses, and entire communities.

Hydro energy is generated by harnessing the power of falling water, such as from rivers or dams. This energy can be used to generate electricity or to power mechanical equipment. It is one of the oldest forms of renewable energy and is still widely used today.

Geothermal energy harnesses the heat from the earth to generate electricity. It is generated by tapping into the earth’s natural heat and using it to generate electricity or to heat buildings. Geothermal power plants are typically located near tectonic plate boundaries where there is a lot of underground heat.

Biomass energy is generated by burning organic materials such as wood, crops, and waste. This energy can be used to generate electricity or to heat buildings. Biomass energy is considered to be carbon neutral because the carbon dioxide emitted during combustion is absorbed by the new growth of the biomass.

Renewable energy is considered to be a crucial solution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. It is also becoming more cost-effective, making it a competitive alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Investing in renewable energy not only helps to protect the environment but also creates jobs and boosts economic growth. Additionally, using renewable energy sources can also increase energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

How does the 2024 solar eclipse affect solar power? Here's what to know

T he long-anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse , slated for Monday afternoon, is just hours away, with Indiana and Kentucky cities along the path of totality likely to see up to four minutes of darkness. The rare phenomenon could impact cell service , but what about renewable energy sources?

Turns out, the event will limit solar power generation across the country. Here's what we know:

Will the 2024 solar eclipse impact solar power and renewable energy sources?

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Yes. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration , the total solar eclipse will impact solar generation all around the country, from Texas to Maine. Solar-powered generators central to the path of totality will be more significantly affected, with over four minutes of complete darkness in some areas. The partial eclipse could also limit sunlight for over two hours on the totality path, further impacting the generation.

At the end of 2023, solar electricity capacity accounted for 8% of total capacity in the U.S., a significant increase since the 2017 total eclipse.

Kentucky weather: What will Louisville weather be like during the eclipse? Here's the latest predictions

How will the solar eclipse impact solar electricity generation in the country?

The total solar eclipse will cause generation facilities to lose solar power, as access to direct sunlight will be obscured. Those closer to the path of totality are likely to be impacted to a higher degree, with the moon blocking all direct sunlight during the short, totality phase, and limiting sunlight in partial phases.

The occurrence will cause utility-scale solar generation facilities in impacted areas to increase output from other sources of electricity generation to make up for the decrease in solar power during the event.

What states will lose the most solar power generation during the 2024 total solar eclipse?

Texas will be most impacted by solar generating capacity during the eclipse with most of the state expected to lose 90-99% solar power. California, in the 40-59% range, and Florida, with solar power as the second leading energy source in the state, will also see significant impacts, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Why will the April 8 total solar eclipse impact solar power? Why it matters

Since the 2017 total eclipse, the use of solar energy across the U.S. has significantly increased, going from the fifth-leading energy source to the third nationally, after natural gas and nuclear. It's the largest source of midday generation in California and the second-largest source of midday generation in Texas, Florida and other parts of the East Coast and Southwest.

Nearly 100 gigawatts of utility-scale and small-scale solar capacity have been added to the system since the 2017 eclipse, making it a more prominent source of power generation in the U.S.

Will the 2024 solar eclipse impact cell service?

Cellular data should generally work during the eclipse, but interruptions may occur, especially closer to the time of totality. According to  NASA,  a solar eclipse impacts Earth's upper atmosphere, the ionosphere, due to the sudden reduction of solar radiation reaching the Earth's atmosphere. "Since the ionosphere contains charged particles (ions and electrons) and is responsible for reflecting and refracting radio waves, changes to the ionosphere can also affect radio communications and navigation systems."

"While solar eclipses can have noticeable effects on the ionosphere, they are generally temporary and localized to the region experiencing the eclipse. The ionosphere typically returns to its normal state after the eclipse event is over, and solar radiation levels return to normal," according to NASA.

Spokespeople for Verizon and AT&T said they don’t expect an impact on their network during the eclipse, especially as  5G and emergency services have been expanded in recent years . Similarly, T-Mobile increased network hardening through fixed backup generators at critical site locations by over 30% in the past two years.

Ulf Ewaldsson, president of technology at T-Mobile, said, “T-Mobile is working hand-in-hand with state and local authorities to address the anticipated surge in network traffic to guarantee seamless connectivity for all. Whether facing large influxes in data use or high demand, our network — which is the nation’s largest, fastest and most awarded — has everyone covered.”

However, there have been instances where cellular service  tends to lag in areas with large crowds , as often seen at concerts and stadiums. "One of the main reasons cell phone signals can get weaker in crowded areas is that everybody is trying to access the same signals simultaneously. Flooded service can cause it to slow down considerably and leave you feeling like you’re waiting your turn to connect properly," according to Sure Call Boosters.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

Photo Illustration: The phases of a total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Image: Tyler Hanson

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at.

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

What is the difference between a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse?

short essay about solar energy

It almost time! Millions of Americans across the country Monday are preparing to witness the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse as it passes over portions of Mexico, the United States and Canada.

It's a sight to behold and people have now long been eagerly awaiting what will be their only chance until 2044 to witness totality, whereby the moon will completely block the sun's disc, ushering in uncharacteristic darkness.

That being said, many are curious on what makes the solar eclipse special and how is it different from a lunar eclipse.

The total solar eclipse is today: Get the latest forecast and everything you need to know

What is an eclipse?

An eclipse occurs when any celestial object like a moon or a planet passes between two other bodies, obscuring the view of objects like the sun, according to NASA .

What is a solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching our planet, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," whereby observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, presents a spectacular sight for viewers and confuses animals – causing nocturnal creatures to stir and bird and insects to fall silent.

Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight.

What is a lunar eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. When this happens, Earth blocks the sunlight that normally reaches the moon. Instead of that sunlight hitting the moon’s surface, Earth's shadow falls on it.

Lunar eclipses are often also referred to the "blood moon" because when the Earth's shadow covers the moon, it often produces a red color. The coloration happens because a bit of reddish sunlight still reaches the moon's surface, even though it's in Earth's shadow.

Difference between lunar eclipse and solar eclipse

The major difference between the two eclipses is in the positioning of the sun, the moon and the Earth and the longevity of the phenomenon, according to NASA.

A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours, while a solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes. Solar eclipses also rarely occur, while lunar eclipses are comparatively more frequent. While at least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, total lunar eclipses are still rare, says NASA.

Another major difference between the two is that for lunar eclipses, no special glasses or gizmos are needed to view the spectacle and one can directly stare at the moon. However, for solar eclipses, it is pertinent to wear proper viewing glasses and take the necessary safety precautions because the powerful rays of the sun can burn and damage your retinas.

Here Are the Five Stages of Today’s Total Solar Eclipse

T oday’s solar eclipse will plunge large swaths of the U.S. into near total darkness as 15 states witness the sun completely cover the moon.

It will enter the U.S. in Texas and exit in Maine , passing through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and parts of Tennessee and Michigan. Millions of people are expected to watch the event, which is the last time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the contiguous United States until 2044.

There are five major stages of the eclipse that stargazers should be on the lookout for. Here’s what to expect.

Stage 1: Partial eclipse begins

All 50 states in the U.S. will be able to witness a partial eclipse–but you must wear eclipse glasses to view it. During the partial eclipse, the moon’s shadow first becomes visible over the sun. The moment the moon’s shadow first touches the sun’s edge is known as “first contact.”  In most locations, the partial eclipse lasts for 70-80 minutes.

Stage 2: "First contact" as the eclipse begins

The total eclipse begins when the sun is almost completely covered by the moon. Just before totality keep an eye out for Baily's Beads, Shadow Bands, and the Diamond Ring.

Read More : How to Safely Watch the Total Eclipse

Baily’s Beads occur very briefly, as small beads of light become visible just as the eclipse enters totality. Shadow bands are faint, rapidly moving bands of light and dark that can be seen on the sides of buildings or the ground.

Just before totality, a single bright spot will remain, resembling a diamond in a ring. Be sure to keep your eclipse glasses on during this stage.

Stage 3: "Second contact" and t otality

Eclipse viewers within the path of totality will witness the moon completely cover the sun, a phenomenon that typically lasts between 3.5 to 4 minutes. Totality, also known as “second contact” is the only phase of the eclipse in which it is safe to completely remove your eclipse glasses—just be sure to put them back on before totality ends.

Stage 4: "Third contact" and brightening

After totality, stargazers will see a partial eclipse again, also known as “third contact”. You will also have another opportunity to witness Baily's Beads, Shadow Bands, and the Diamond Ring as the moon begins to inch away from the sun. Be sure to put your eclipse glasses back on before this stage begins.

Stage 5: "Fourth contact" as t he eclipse ends

“Fourth contact” refers to the moment in which the sun is no longer covered by the moon. At this point, the eclipse is completely over, and you can safely remove your eclipse glasses.

Australian solar manufacturing through the looking glass

The Silicon to Solar report, partly funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, outlines ways to restore solar manufacturing to the nation with a little help from the country’s major trading partner – China.

Australian universities and research institutes have been a major influence on China’s PV boom, educating numerous Chinese solar engineers and senior executives.

China hosts 80% of global solar silicon, wafer, cell, and module manufacturing capacity and last year invested almost AUD200 billion ($130 billion) in the sector, according to analyst Wood Mackenzie. Its solar panels cost around AUD0.23/W, compared to nearest competitor India, at AUD0.34/W.

When Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, announced the Australian Renewable Energy Agency’s (ARENA) AUD357,000 contribution to the AUD1.12 million Silicon to Solar (S2S) report in July 2023, he noted that “over 80% of today’s global solar PV manufacturing uses technology developed in Australian laboratories.” He added that Australia relies “too heavily on overseas supply for our solar panels, which poses major risks due to production concentration and vulnerabilities in the supply chain.”

The Australian Photovoltaic Institute (APVI), the initiator of the S2S report – along with the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics, management consultancy Bright Dimension, ITP Renewables, and Deloitte – analyzed the potential for Australian PV manufacturing and the policy settings needed.

The main finding was that an industry producing 10 GW per year of polysilicon and 5 GW of ingots, wafers, cells, and PV modules would be “credible and feasible, under provision of the right government policy support.”

Quartz and all

S2S estimated every step of the solar supply chain that comes before module production would be double the cost of production in China, to start with. However, Australian module production costs would add up to AUD0.17/W compared with China’s AUD0.12/W, because heavy components, including aluminum and glass, could be made in Australia.

The minimum viable plant size for refining Australia’s abundant quartz reserves into solar-grade polysilicon is around 25,0000 tons, or 10 GW per annum. Just one facility would exceed Australia’s requirement and constitute an export-focused industry.

“This presents an opportunity to complement the IRA [the United States’ renewables-focused Inflation Reduction Act], which is currently anticipated not to stimulate sufficient poly-Si [polysilicon] capacity in the US,” said S2S.

Ingots and wafers

Ingot and wafer manufacturing is “highly specialised,” stated the report, and the latest intellectual property (IP) is owned by a handful of big Chinese companies. “If set up in Australia, an ingot/wafer facility would likely require a partnership with an international technology provider and could be scaled up by one, or a few, companies to service both a domestic and export market over time,” it said.

Government backing would be crucial, with the S2S report estimating AUD7.8 billion for production credits to fill that module cost gap, plus concessional infrastructure finance.

The hard cell

Cell manufacturing would be the toughest nut to crack, the S2S authors found. Cell production requires high-grade chemicals and overseas, IP-protected silver-paste technology. Despite healthy long-term prospects based on Australia’s track record in cell efficiency and manufacturing process improvements, S2S said that “large production capacity in China, the US, the EU, and India present a challenge to setting up … viable cell production domestically.”

Brett Hallam is an associate professor and Scientia Fellow at the University of New South Wales’ School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering and a senior consultant with ITP Renewables. The S2S co-author told pv magazine  there is an opportunity to close the loop.

“Twenty years ago, China drew on the expertise of Australia to establish manufacturing for PV,” he said. “Now we’ve got the opportunity to learn from the best in the world about mass manufacturing of the lowest-cost and best solar panels on the market.”

S2S doesn’t shy away from challenges – including enlisting international technology partners, mitigating cell production chemical waste, and a lack of module certification capability to support rapid product development. Rather, says S2S co-author and ITP Renewables Principal Consultant Muriel Watt, “we wanted to do the detail and really spell it out so that people aren’t overwhelmed. We now know exactly the issues in each sector that we need to address. We have some idea of what kinds of policy are relevant for each sector and what are the most useful things we could do to push that along.”

High stakes

Australia expects to rely on solar for 70% of its future low-carbon energy. Rather than hydro or offshore wind, solar is where Australia shines – but not without panels. Supply chain disruptions such as those experienced during the pandemic, as well as ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, have highlighted Australia’s vulnerability.

One ARENA objective is to develop ultra-low-cost solar to power Australian green hydrogen and boost the manufacturing of green steel, aluminum, and other value-added industries.

Popular content

“If you’re banking on your economic success over coming decades to be powered by solar technology, you need to think about how comfortable you are that the supply chains are so concentrated,” said ARENA Chief Executive Officer Darren Miller. “And that’s where the manufacturing opportunity starts – around security and reliability of supply.”

Short-term returns

S2S calculates that the AUD7.8 billion needed for a 10-year package of government support for solar manufacturing could attract upfront investment of AUD2.9 billion into cutting-edge manufacturing facilities, and could stimulate ongoing operational expenditure. That level of policy support should create 4,000 skilled jobs, stimulate growth in adjacent industries such as module recycling, and help retain Australian IP and solar talent, according to the report.

Long-term rewards

An Australian solar industry, contends S2S, would become the springboard for a manufacturing ecosystem to enable innovative Australian technology to scale up. That would unlock skills and knowledge spillover into other industries, with the nation making better use of its educated workforce.

The S2S report noted that Australia’s ranking on the international, 133-nation Economic Complexity Index (ECI) has fallen from 55th, when Harvard University launched the tool, to 93rd in 2023. Australia’s high standard of living is predominantly supported by selling raw materials such as iron ore plus fossil fuels coal and gas.

“If we’re going to turn around our economy in Australia before 2030, the sooner we start, the better,” said ITP’s Watt. “And solar makes absolute sense as a starting point because it’s the cornerstone of all the other discussions about green steel, green hydrogen, and becoming a renewable energy superpower – none of that happens without solar.”

Story to date

Australia is not starting from scratch. Adelaide-based module manufacturer Tindo Solar has carved out a market for high-quality modules with its impressive environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) credentials. Its products are largely manufactured from vetted overseas components and boast a 25-year Australian warranty.

At the turn of the 21st century, BP Solar was the southern hemisphere’s biggest solar panel manufacturer. Competition from cheap imports reduced its viability, and Silex Systems – which bought BP’s plant – tried to restructure the business before closing for good in 2012. It cited the impossibility of competing with China, a lack of government support, and a strong Australian dollar. The cost of labor would also become a reason for the country shedding other manufacturing industries, such as auto production. The slippery slope toward economic simplicity continued.

“Back in 2010, our founders were watching what had happened with China’s ramping up of PV production,” said Tindo Solar CEO Richard Petterson. “A lot of what was coming into the country was probably less than good and not designed for Australian conditions.”

The company saw an opportunity to produce panels that were high quality and suitable for Australia’s climate.

Today, said Petterson, Tindo Solar’s main customers are householders who want to buy high-performing panels and bask in the renewable energy bounty for at least a couple of decades. It is also pursuing a growing market among commercial and industrial (C&I) customers looking for long-term reliability and low maintenance paired with environmental, social, and corporate governance credentials that further boost their own ESG ratings.

“Our product uses about 125 kg of CO 2 for every megawatt made, compared to more than 550 kg/MW in China,” said Petterson. That is mostly because Tindo has its own renewable energy supply, “but also we’re in South Australia, so that any energy we draw from the grid is predominantly renewable,” added the chief executive.

In many ways, Tindo Solar is a case study in what’s possible for a broader Australian PV manufacturing industry. It recently more than tripled its annual manufacturing capacity to 150 MW and started exporting to residential and C&I customers in Vietnam in 2023. It has plans to expand to 1 GW of capacity with a new plant on Australia’s east coast. But Petterson said the $100 million venture will need government support to be viable. Until now, over its 23-year lifespan, Tindo Solar has only received a very small government grant during the pandemic. Now, said Petterson, it is not only competing with cheaper imports but “with governments putting a lot of money into renewables” – a good thing for the planet.

“There has to be a determination on a production credit in Australia, to be able to make a very good product at scale,” he said. He added that he is also looking to mitigate the cost of commercial-scale land, which could constitute up to 70% of the cost of the company’s expansion. As such, Petterson is “in discussions with local and state governments” in Queensland and New South Wales. Both states recently announced multi-million Australian-dollar initiatives to stimulate manufacturing of renewable energy components, including those contributing to solar generation, energy storage, and green hydrogen production.

Australia’s AUD15 billion National Reconstruction Fund , established in October 2022, is a potential source of support for a homegrown solar industry. Its remit is to “diversify and transform Australia’s industry and economy.”

Petterson said that since the Tindo factory expansion, “we‘ve had all sorts of people coming in wanting to test ideas. That’s all innovation that otherwise has nowhere to go. When you’ve got a big production capacity, you’ve also got a big capacity for testing the next product range, and that’s why I’ve put substantial area aside in the proposed gigawatt-scale facility for us to be ready for that.”

short essay about solar energy

Safety glasses, coronas and traffic were all the talk this week after parts of the U.S. experienced a total solar eclipse on Monday afternoon, with Connecticut seeing the sun covered by the moon 92% of the way at its peak.

Days before, the U.S. Energy Information Administration put out an analysis saying that solar electricity generation would be “briefly” limited around the country, although it would be more noticeable in areas of 100% totality.

So with the sun mostly covered in Connecticut and some parts of New England experiencing totality, what happened to the thousands of homes and hundreds of schools that run on solar power?

Short answer: Nothing.

The director of operations at ISO New England, which manages the region’s electric grid, said they prepared for it.

“The work done ahead of time to understand how the eclipse would impact the regional power system was crucial to a smooth operating day,” said the director in a public post on their website .

Operators were expecting a steep decrease in the use of solar power during the eclipse, which data from ISO confirms.

Use of solar power steeply dropped on Monday afternoon when the eclipse was at its peak. In the following days, it followed a steady course, allowing for cloudy weather.

Solar helps take pressure off the grid . At certain times of day and year, solar power makes up over half of all renewable energy used on the grid . Out of all sources of energy though, both renewable and non-renewable, solar makes up a smaller chunk.

Despite solar's small share of total energy use, operators had to prepare for its drop. ISO said that it ramped up use of natural gas and hydroelectric to offset the loss in solar power.
