Yes, I mean zero.

Just go into the bush, pick some snails, erect some sticks at your backyard and put shade over it.

You’ve started snail farming.

Paying apt attention and giving this business commitment can make you millions of money.

Starting with 100 snails can produce about 5,000 snails in a year.

It can supplement your current income and sustain you financially.

I urge the unemployed youth, fresh graduate and anyone interested in agribusiness to venture into snail rearing in Ghana.

In this guide, you are going to learn.

The basics of snail farming.

How to commence a snail farm.

Constructing the farm house.

Sourcing your snails.

What snails feed on.

And a lot more.

Snail farming is one of the underexplored agribusiness ventures in Ghana.

It will be wise to start one as the demand for snail meat is always on the rise.

Snail meat is expensive and its consumed by most people in Ghana.

It is rich in vitamins and cholesterol free.

Snail also has cosmetic uses.

Are you ready to start snail rearing?

Let us get started.

Knowing the basics.

Rearing snails require little capital as compared with others like poultry farming, piggery and grasscutter rearing.

There are different breeds of snails.

The breed you choose to rear will determine how successful you can become.

Write a business plan.

Get your entire business documented on paper.

The business plan should include the following.

  • Name of the business
  • The amount you are starting with
  • How you intend to raise capital
  • The number of breeding stock you are starting with
  • The location of the business
  • How you’ll market your products to potential customers.

After you are successfully done putting up a business plan, it is time to start the actual farm.

What must you do?

How to start the snail rearing business.

Before you commence the farm make sure you have enough capital, a space for rearing, breeding stock and other available accessories to facilitate the process.

Choose a suitable location and structure for the farm.

In snail farming choosing where to keep the snails is very important as a change in weather conditions can adversely affect the progress of the farm.

The common risk associated with snail farming is the ability to provide the right the right ambient temperature and humidity for growing the snails.

Two models can be adopted in rearing snails.

They are the free range system and the pen system.

The pen type is more secure than the range.

Whichever system you pick, you should follow some basic principles to ensure the snails are producing maximally.

In choosing an environment, consider the following:

  • Choose a place that is free from wind
  • Choose soil that have enough moisture (water) and other minerals like calcium. Do not rear snails in clay soil. It can dry up and trap the eggs inside
  • The farm should be covered with a mesh to prevent predators such as hawks from feeding on the snails
  • Provide a very cool and humid environment.
  • Plant vegetables to serve as a shade and feed. Examples of such vegetables are cocoyam, dwarf banana, potato, etc. The plants should not be taller than the top of the structure

If you are using the free range system, you need to plant the plants and wait for them to fully mature over a period of 3 to 4 months.

The snails will suffer heat if the plants are not fully grown to provide shade.

Unless otherwise you have another alternative for provision of shade.

The next thing is to treat the soil and make sure all resident termites and other living organisms are killed to make the farm secured.

Sourcing the snails.

This is an important aspect you need to pay attention to.

The source of your snails will determine the productivity of the farm.

Avoid getting breeding stock from market vendors.

The best place to get your snails is the bush or from a snail farmer who is reselling.

Make sure you get snails that are at their point of laying eggs.

Once you stock it won’t take much time to see them laying.

The price of the snails will depend on the season and your ability to negotiate.

Which species of snails must you go for?

There are several species of snails in Ghana but the common one that is mostly consumed and grow so fast is the Ghanaian giant snail (botanical name: Achatina achatina).

Taking care of the snails.

The most challenging time every snail farmer faces in Ghana is the dry season.

Naturally, snails do not like dryness.

How do you overcome this?

You can overcome this big hurdle by doing the following:

  • Water / wet your farm at least two or three times daily (morning, afternoon and evening) to make the environment moist. You can use water hose to achieve this.

Other management tips.

  • Burry exposed eggs inside the solid

Feeding the snails

For proper shell formation, the snail feed should be rich in calcium.

Buy already prepared snail feed or prepare it yourself.

You can collect the shells of dead snails, grind it and mix it into the soil again for the present snails to feed on.

Snails also can feed on leaves of the plants on the farm.

Marketing and selling the snails.

You can harvest mature snails during the night.

This is because in the day time it is difficult to locate them.

Snail cost much in the market and so you are not scared of low pricing.

You can sell to other local famers, restaruants and retailers.

I believe this guide has given you an insight about what snail farming is.

Some of the important things come with experience.

Have you already started a snail farm or you are planning to start one?

How To Start A Profitable Snail Farm In Ghana

Updated: Nov 17, 2023

Snail farming in ghana

Engaging in snail farming presents young entrepreneurs in Ghana with one of the most lucrative opportunities in agriculture. This practical and viable business venture is yet to be fully explored not only in Ghana but also in the broader West African region. The annual import of approximately 20,000 tons of snails into Ghana underscores the substantial demand for snails in the country. This post aims to equip you with the essential knowledge required to initiate and run a profitable snail business in Ghana.

Why Snail Farming?

Unlike other livestock production which requires huge housing structures, snail farming can be done at the backyard of your residence, on a different part of your farm and anywhere that is cool enough to house the snails away from direct sunlight.

Snail farming requires a low capital and cost of production, it also gives you enough time during the day to go about other activities and still meet your household protein demand. Snail farming business is also highly profitable as the demand for the snails and it's bi products is very high! For anyone just starting out in snail farming, it requires little but valuable knowledge to commence operations unlike other livestock farming where you need to probably undergo training.

However, it’s necessary to consult an expert in the field to avoid having high morbidity and other loss of investment. Our team of experts will be more than happy to assist you.

WHAT IS SNAIL FARMING?

Backyard snail farm

Heliculture, commonly known as snail farming, involves the cultivation of edible land snails, primarily for human consumption or cosmetic purposes.

Each snail exhibits both female and male reproductive organs, making them hermaphrodites capable of procreating fertile eggs.

In terms of nutritional benefits, snails serve as a rich source of essential elements such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, and protein. Additionally, they are low in cholesterol, sodium, and fats.

In Ghana, snail farming is recognized as a sustainable agribusiness that proves to be highly economical. A modest investment is sufficient for a small start-up to yield returns from the snail farm. However, for enhanced profitability, scaling up your investment to a larger operation is recommended.

Although snail farming in Ghana holds significant untapped potential, it is currently practiced by a limited number of farmers. Some perceive that snails can be easily obtained from bushes and forests during the rainy season, overlooking the challenges faced during the dry seasons.

This underscores the importance of encouraging and exploring snail farming as a viable business opportunity in Ghana and West Africa as a whole. Despite the prevalent abundance of snails due to favorable weather conditions, the untapped potential during dry seasons emphasizes the need to promote and invest in snail farming as a sustainable and lucrative venture.

Requirements For Snail Farming Business

Snail farming business as earlier stated requires little capital to begin.

Snails are environmental friendly although care must be taken when rearing them on or close to a vegetable or crop farm as they can crawl out and feast on the crops due to their love for leaves and fruits.

Snail farming also requires little man power and feeding them is relatively cheap; almost free. Listed below are the things needed to start out as snail farmer:

Regular water supply

Treated and well aerated soil

Brooms, dust pans for cleaning the snail pen

Mosquito nets and wire gauze

Tray for feeding the snails

Shed or perforated covering for snails

UNDERSTANDING SNAIL BREEDS

Snails come in various species, colors, sizes, and shapes. In Ghana, we have Achatina Achatina (Nwapa), which is the most popular because of its economic size, there is Achatina Marginata and Achatina fulica which is very common in the bushes, forests and households. At full maturity, Achatina Achatina(AA) snails typically lay 200 eggs per batch. In ideal climates, lay 5-6 batches per year, therefore 1000-1200 eggs per year!

They can reach up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length and 10 cm (4 inches) in maximum diameter.

Achatina Marginata is the second best alternative when it comes to snail farming in ghana. Once stocked & well managed, Achatina marginata snails lay between 6-14 eggs every 3 months , multiplying to about x10 of its original number in 6 months.

Creating the Ideal Habitat for Your Snail Farm

Snails thrive in environments with specific temperature, humidity, and soil conditions. Ensure that your snailery provides adequate shade, proper ventilation, and protection from extreme weather conditions. Use loamy soil with good drainage and maintain the right moisture level to create an ideal habitat that promotes snail health and reproduction.

Soil Attributes The soil plays a pivotal role in providing the necessary conditions for snails to thrive. When selecting a site for snail farming, it is crucial to consider soil composition, water content, and texture.

The primary component of a snail's shell is calcium, sourced from both the soil and their feed.

Snails fulfill a significant portion of their water needs through the soil.

Snails burrow into the soil for egg-laying and seek refuge during dry spells.

Given these factors, it is imperative that the soil be loose, with high calcium and water content.

Avoid these types of soil:

heavy, clayey soils prone to waterlogging in the rainy season and compaction in the dry season.

Overly sandy soil is also unsuitable due to its limited water retention capacity.

It is advisable to avoid acidic soils, as acidity can hinder shell development. Lime can be used to neutralize soils that are excessively acidic, adjusting the pH to around 7.

Soils rich in organic matter provide an optimal environment for snail growth. Generally, if a soil supports the flourishing growth of cocoyam, tomatoes, and leafy vegetables, it is conducive to snail farming.

Prior to introducing snails to a site, it is essential to loosen the soil through proper tilling.

Snails thrive in damp, not excessively wet, environments. Wet or waterlogged soil should be drained, and rainwater should be promptly dispersed. Snails breathe air and may drown in overly moist surroundings. Maintaining a soil moisture content of around 80% of field capacity is favorable. High air humidity, exceeding 80%, during the night encourages active snail behavior and growth.

The majority of snail activity, including feeding, occurs during the night, peaking 2 to 3 hours after dusk. The cooler temperatures stimulate activity, and the night-time dew facilitates the snail's movement. During the day, snails prefer to hide in sheltered areas. In regions like Ghana, shredded semi-dry banana leaves are often placed in snail pens to provide hiding spots for the snails during daylight hours.

Designing your snailery : The design and dimensions of your snailery, or snaileries, are contingent upon the chosen snail growing system and the intended snail production volume.

Regarding housing, your snail farm could adopt an extensive, semi-intensive, or intensive system, each escalating in complexity, management, and financial requirements. Three viable options include:

Extensive System: Outdoor, free-range snail pens.

Mixed or Semi-Intensive System: Controlled environment for egg laying and hatching; young snails transferred to outdoor pens for growth or fattening after 6-8 weeks.

Intensive System: Closed systems, such as plastic tunnel houses, greenhouses, or buildings with controlled climates.

Irrespective of the snail farm's size or type, the housing system must fulfill specific conditions. It must be:

Escape-Proof: Snails are adept at escaping, and without proper measures, they may wander into neighboring gardens or houses.

Spacious: Commensurate with the snails' growth stage (hatchlings, juveniles, breeding snails, or mature snails fattened for consumption). Overcrowding hinders development and increases the risk of diseases.

Accessible and User-Friendly: For tasks like handling snails, placing feed, cleaning, and other activities.

Protected: From insects, predators, and potential poachers.

Various materials can be used to construct snaileries, considering factors such as price and availability:

Decay- and termite-resistant timber (e.g., iroko, opepe, ekki).

concrete blocks or mudbricks.

Galvanized sheets, polythene sheets.

Chicken wire for protection.

Mosquito nets or nylon mesh for covering pens to guard against insects.

Second-hand materials like car tires, oil drums, and old water tanks.

For simple snaileries, materials like discarded car tires and oil drums can be repurposed:

Car Tires or Oil Drums:

Housing snails in tire

Stacked tires with chicken wire and mosquito mesh or oil drums with drainage holes, filled with good soil. Suitable for keeping a small number of snails near the house for personal use.

Additionally, specific pen types, such as hutch boxes, may be considered for straightforward snail farming setups:

Hutch Boxes

Wooden boxes with lids, elevated on stilts, fitted with protectors to deter vermin. An opening covered with wire netting and nylon mesh allows access. Hutch boxes, filled with sieved black soil, should be shielded from extreme weather conditions.

Snail farming system using wooden boxes

Characteristics of a Good Snail Habitat

Your snail housing must have enough space for your snails to graze freely. Overcrowding your snailery impedes the development of snails and therefore should be avoided. A well-spaced snail housing reduces the risk of disease outbreaks caused by overcrowding.

A good snail housing should be able to protect against predators , poachers and insect infestation . Predators feed on young snails whereas poachers steal snails. As for insects, they lay their eggs on the snails: these eggs develop to the larvae stage, and then feed on the snails from inside their shells, thereby causing high snail mortality leading to loss of investment. Again, your snail house must be easily accessible for carrying out management activities. Snail housing should be built in such a way that will enable managers to handle snails, place feed, carry out cleaning activities, and other tasks. The snail housing must prevent snails from escaping. No matter how slow snails can be, they can still wander off through open spaces and invade your house or garden. Therefore, all possible snail escape routes should be tightly closed. Snail housing must be well ventilated and provided with adequate shade.

Feeding and Nutrition

Proper nutrition is fundamental to the health and growth of your snails. Snails are herbivores, and their diet should consist of a variety of green, leafy vegetables, fruits, and calcium-rich supplements. Maintaining a balanced diet is crucial for shell development, reproduction, and overall vitality.

Provide food and water for your snails twice daily, both in the morning and at night. Offer a diverse diet consisting of plantain, pumpkin, potato, lettuce, pawpaw, cabbage, banana, cucumber, and other suitable options.

Snails commonly consume meal leftovers and green leaves devoid of salt. The inclusion of calcium is essential for shell development. Therefore, incorporate limestone and eggshells into their feeds. A widely adopted feed among commercial snail farmers is moringa leaves and powder. Renowned for its medicinal properties and high protein & calcium content, moringa is a valuable nutritional resource. Fresh moringa leaves possess protein levels equivalent to that of an egg, while dried moringa leaves boast four times more protein.

Breeding and Reproduction

Understanding the reproductive cycle of snails is key to maintaining a sustainable farm. Snails are hermaphrodites, meaning each snail has both male and female reproductive organs. However, they still require a mate to reproduce. Provide the right conditions for mating, ensure proper egg-laying sites, and monitor the hatching process to boost the reproductive success of your snail farm.

When snails reach sexual maturity, typically between 8 to 12 months after being hatched, they lay eggs that hatch within a span of 4 to 6 weeks.

Although there isn't a specific breeding season for snails, you can anticipate approximately 5 to 6 clutches of eggs annually. Each clutch typically contains an average of 200 eggs, provided they are placed under favorable conditions.

The newly hatched snails can remain in the soil for up to 5 days. Upon hatching, it is advisable to place them in a separate enclosure from the mature snails, ensuring they have ample space and protection for optimal growth.

While this stage might pose certain challenges, this is offset by the market value and the prolific reproductive nature of snails, ultimately compensating for the time invested.

Pest and Disease Management

While snails are generally hardy creatures, they can be susceptible to pests and diseases. Regularly inspect your snailery for signs of pests, such as mites or predatory insects, and implement control measures promptly. Additionally, maintain good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of diseases among your snail population.

At times, it might be necessary to cover the soil surface in your snail pen with dried leaves, a process known as mulching, to provide a shelter for your snails. Before introducing these dried leaves to your snail pen, it's essential to wash them in hot water. This practice helps eliminate insects and their eggs that may be attached to the leaves.

The same precaution should be taken for fresh leaves and vegetables that you cut to feed your snails – ensure they are thoroughly washed in clean water.

Additionally, it is advisable to remove leftovers from your snail pens daily. Leftovers act as attractants for various predators, especially ants and rodents.

Snails face threats from various predators, including turkeys, geese, chickens, ants, snakes, lizards, and termites. While snails are not typically linked to many diseases, problems related to bacteria and fungi may arise in pens that are overcrowded.

Toads, frogs, birds, weasels, skunks, moles, mice, and rats serve as carriers of fungi, nematodes, and other pathogens that can spread through contact. It is crucial to remain vigilant about pest activity and relocate your snails from the pens when deemed necessary.

In a broader sense, maintaining cleanliness on your snail farm is crucial for optimal conditions.

Harvesting Techniques

Knowing when and how to harvest your snails is critical for optimizing profits. Typically, snails are ready for harvest when they reach a desirable size and their shells harden. Harvest them carefully to avoid stress and injury, and employ humane and efficient methods to prepare them for market.

Snails typically require an average of two years to achieve full maturity. To determine their maturity, examine the rim of the shell. Snails with a hard and thick shell are considered mature. It is crucial to harvest snails only when they have reached this mature stage.

However, the process becomes a bit intricate when it comes to harvesting for market sale while also preserving some for future breeding. The snails earmarked for breeding will serve as the foundational stock. Various tools such as baskets, boxes, bowls, and containers can be employed to facilitate the harvesting of snails.

Cost of Starting A Snail Farming Business in Ghana

Many new businesses require a large capital outlay, which is not within reach of most business owners. A typical startup business also takes a long time to produce a good return on investment.

By contrast, a small-scale snail business has a relatively low start-up cost and rapid returns.

The mandatory expenses you need to account for if you’re wondering how to set up a snail farm include: housing, buying fresh snails, feeding, handling, and processing the snails, marketing, and transportation.

Depending on how big you want your snail farm to be, you can start with GH₵5 00 or GH₵2 000. You may create 1,500 snails valued over GH₵ 22,000 twice a year if you start with only 50 snails.

This is made possible because of the availability of very highly prolific Achatina achatina species of snails, which lay 200 – 400 in one batch two-three times a year. If you produce 50,000 snails that sell for GH₵ 15.00 each, which is GH₵ 15.00 X 50,000, you will be making GH₵750,000 . You can harvest twice in a year and make GH₵1,500,000 per annum or even more

For beginners, creating a snail farming business plan is a crucial step that needs to be accomplished before starting. This will give you a deep understanding of the business.

You can begin with as little as GH₵ 500 (which basically to covers the cost of buying the snails and feeding them) and get a 100% return on your capital investment within six months.

Snail farming is a low-risk industry in terms of cost and time. Snail farming, unlike many other animal companies, has low startup and operation expenditure. Save money on farmland, you can even set up your snail farm in the backyard of your home.

The rainy season, especially from July to October, is the optimum time to establish a snail farm because that is when snails generally begin to breed. It’s also worth noting that snail prices skyrocket during the dry season, which runs from March to December. You can definitely take advantage of that and produce snails during the dry season through a good management system.

The most suitable snail species for rearing are the Achatina Fulica, Achatina Achatina and the Archachatina Marginata but the Achatina Achatina is the most recommended for snail farming because of its high reproductive capacities. It can lay up to 500 eggs at once and lays eggs three times a year. The Achatina Achatina is also easy to find. CONSIDER THESE STEPS IN STARTING YOUR SNAIL FARM. 1. Secure an environment suitable for snail rearing. The best environment to situate your snail farm is a low plain, downhill site. The farm should not be exposed to excessive wind because too much wind would dry out and dehydrate your snails. It is best to have trees like banana or plantain planted around your snail farm. 2. Consider the type of soil for snail farming. The most preferable soil for snail is sandy-loamy soil with little water holding capacity. Clayey soil and acidic soil should be avoided. 3. Get your snails for farming. You would need some snails to start up your snail farm and you must ensure that they are fertile and in perfect condition. The best place to source for your initial stock is in the bushes. Snails gotten directly from their natural habitat are in the best condition because they have not been exposed to too much sunlight which would dehydrate them and make them less fertile. 4. Purchase your snail food and feeding or you can look for foods around your environment. Snails are very versatile feeders. They can feed on anything from leaves to fruits. Snails can feed on cocoyam leaves, cassava and okra leaves, cabbage, lettuce, pawpaw as well as eggplant leaves. Snails can also feed on fruits like mangoes, banana, pawpaw, tomatoes and pears. 6. Harvest your snail when they are matured. When harvesting your snails, it is important to handle them carefully. You can harvest them into clean plastic containers, baskets, bowls, or in a box to be carried to the point of sale. I love your article on snail farm. I have already started one at my backyard. I went for 8 AA snails one from the bush and 7 from the market (though not advisable) to try them. I only needed the eggs to start. So I incubated the eggs whenever they laid. I now have 400 growing snails for my start. Yes it is very lucrative to start with low capital. But here is my point of advise to interested persons, You need to love these vegetarians, have time for time, they need regular visit and care and have the spirit of patience because success is never achieved on a silver platter. IT IS NOT A QUICK WAY TO FETCH MONEY right! But patience conquers. Just to your normal business whilst farming your snails gradually, gradually, the beginning may seem foolish and a waste of time. But I tell you, good opportunities are always packed in ugly packages. Imagine my 400 snails laying 300 eggs each trice a year when they reach sexual maturity, calculate how many snails you are going to keep. PATIENCE CONQUERS!

The Importance of Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture is crucial for the long-term health and well-being of our planet. Unlike traditional livestock farming, snail farming requires minimal resources and has a low carbon footprint. Snails can thrive on a variety of feed sources, including kitchen waste and agricultural byproducts, reducing the need for expensive and environmentally harmful feed. By embracing snail farming, Ghana is leading the way in sustainable agriculture and setting an example for other countries to follow.

Economic Benefits of Snail Farming

Snail farming offers numerous economic benefits, making it an attractive venture for farmers in Ghana. Compared to other livestock farming ventures, snail farming requires minimal investment in infrastructure and equipment. This makes it accessible to small-scale farmers who may not have the financial resources to engage in large-scale agriculture. Additionally, snails have a high market value and are in constant demand, both locally and internationally. This creates opportunities for farmers to generate substantial income and diversify their sources of revenue. By venturing into snail farming, farmers in Ghana are not only contributing to their financial stability but also to the overall economic growth of the country.

Environmental Benefits of Snail Farming

Snail farming is an environmentally friendly practice that minimizes the negative impact on the ecosystem. Unlike traditional livestock farming, snail farming does not contribute to deforestation or soil degradation. Snails feed on a variety of organic matter, including leaves, fruits, and vegetables, which reduces the need for extensive land use and the clearing of natural habitats. Moreover, snails produce minimal waste and do not emit greenhouse gases, making them an environmentally sustainable option. By promoting snail farming, Ghana is not only preserving its natural resources but also contributing to global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.

Health Benefits of Consuming Snails

In addition to its economic and environmental benefits, snail farming also offers health advantages. Snails are highly nutritious and rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. They are a good source of iron, which is essential for maintaining healthy blood cells and preventing anemia. Snails also contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to heart health and brain function. Moreover, snails have low cholesterol and fat content, making them a healthy choice for those looking to maintain a balanced diet. By incorporating snails into their diet, Ghanaians can enjoy the health benefits of this nutritious delicacy while supporting sustainable agriculture.

Challenges and Opportunities in Snail Farming

While snail farming presents numerous benefits, it also comes with its own set of challenges. One of the main obstacles faced by snail farmers is the lack of technical knowledge and expertise. Additionally, the market for snails can be unpredictable, with fluctuations in demand and supply. However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation and growth. By investing in research and development, Ghana can address these challenges and further strengthen its position as a leader in snail farming.

Of all these species of snails, the Achatina achatina is the most desirable among commercial snail farmers just for the big giant size. Its origin is from Nigeria to Ghana and then Liberia.

Among these three species, Achatina Achatina is the most desirable for farmers because it grows so big to become the biggest snail species in the world. Achatina Achaina has it’s origin from Nigeria, get to Liberia from Nigeria and then Ghana

Another reason is due to it’s high yield capacity. The other species are very good too but I will focus on Achatina Achatina and Archachatina Marginata in this blog post because, they are easy to find in Nigeria .

Achatina-Achatina is very good for commercialization as well, because of its profitability. This is because of the volume of eggs it lays at once. Each achatina lays 300 to 500 eggs at a time in clutches, three times a year. Therefore, if you start a farm with about 1000 snails, in one year you would be getting about 1.5 million snails going by the number of eggs they produces.

SETTING UP A SNAIL FARM

Having decided on the specie, let’s take you through the step by step how to setup your snail farm in a small scale level and starts rearing your snail towards harvest.1. Snail Farming Environment – Snails are easily dehydrated, and wind increase the rate of moisture loose in snail which in turn, leads to the dryness of the animal.

To prevent snails from losing water so quickly, your snailery (the snail pen construction) must be located in environment that is protected from wind.

A low plain, downhill site surrounded with enough trees is perfect for snail farming. You may plant plantains and bananas around your snail farm to prevent the impact of wind.2. Type of Soil For Snail Farm – Snail’s major habitat is the soil, and soil contains some of the components and chemical substances that it needed to survive.

However, not all soils are suitable for snail rearing. The shell of the snail is mainly calcium and it derive most of them from the soil. Snail also lay it’s eggs on the soil and drink water out of the soil.

Hence, the suitable soil for snail farming must contain these elements.  Must be balanced, not waterlogged, not too dry, and must not be acidic. The most desirable soil for snail is sandy-loamy soil with low water holding capacity.

Clayey soil and acidic soil must be avoided.3. Getting The Sails For Farming – To start up a snail farm, it is advisable to get snails directly from the forest instead of buying from the market after they have been exposed to sunlight and have dehydrated. This is because snails drink a lot of water, so are easily dehydrated and this stresses them out, and reduce their fertility capacity.

The intending snail farmer could pick the snails from the bush with a very simple technique; clear a little portion of land during rainy season and sprinkle spicy fruits like pineapple, pawpaw, plantain, banana etc at about 5o’clock in the evening, when you go back there about 7pm or 8pm, you will pick up snails suitable for rearing. Repeat the procedure until you get enough quantity.

Another way could be to pick up snail eggs littered in the market place where it is sold and through a technique, check the fertility of the eggs, because some of them must have lost fertility due to the exposure to sunlight. The eggs are later put inside a container containing wet sand and covered with cocoyam leaf. Between 21 to 28 days, the eggs would hatch into baby snails. You start feeding them and gradually you raise a snail farm.”4. The Snail House (Snailery) – Snaileries can vary from a patch of fence-protected ground, sheltered from the wind to a covered box if you are breeding in small scale.

For larger population of snails, you can dug a trench or make a concrete pen with soil deep of about 10 inches, and cover it with screen or wire all around to prevent the snails from escaping. Remember that snails can reproduce fast and become pests when their breeding is uncontrolled.

Snails love dark and cold places, but make sure the humidity does not drop to levels harmful to the snails. You can use fresh leaves and cloth that is regularly wet to regulate the temperature.

Also, the wire is useful in keeping away rats and snakes or other predators from eating the snails in your snail farm.

But aside from these bigger predators, you should be wary about smaller ones like ants and termites. Your construction must have these predators in mind.5. Snails Foods and Feeding – Snails especially Achatina mainly feeds on green leaves and fruits though they can utilize other ranges of foods. Feed your snails leaves, fruits, or even formula from the feed store.

Aside from food to grow tissues, snails need calcium to grow shells.Leaves: Cocoyam leaves, pawpaw leaves, okra leaves, cassava leaves, eggplant leaves, cabbage and lettuce leaves.Fruits: Mango, eggplant, pawpaw, banana, tomatoes, oil palm fruits, pears. and cucumber.

Once they start growing, separate the big ones from the small ones. It take more than a year for the Achatina type to grow to harvest size. Others mature in two years.

1. GETTING A SUITABLE ENVIRONMENT: The most suitable environment for snail rearing is a moisture filled environment. Snails are easily dehydrated, so they need a so much wet environment to keep cool and hydrated.

2. SOIL: The best soil for snail production is the sandy-loamy soil which is devoid of laterite or mud, which might lead to a water logged snail environment. The soil used should also be rich in some minerals, most especially calcium, which is a major component of the snail shells.

3. SNAIL PROCUREMENT:  The best way to source for snails is in the wild. This is much more preferable to buying in the markets just for the fact that the gene pool of the wild snails are still full and will make them a very good specimens for breeding.

4. THE SNAIL HOUSE: Concrete pens can be constructed for snails with soils up to about 10 inches in depth. The pens could be covered with wire meshes to prevent escape of the snails.

5. FEEDING: Snails most feed on green leaves and fruits though they can choose from a variety of different foods. It also best to feed them with concentrate feeds specially formulated to meet their nutrients requirements.

6. MARKETING:  A commercial value snail will grow to full maturity in less than a year. It can even be harvested for marketing after 8 months if adequate feeding is applied. A matured snail will sell for close to N500 depending on the size and the cost of breeding a snail from hatching to maturity will not be more than N150, giving a profit margin of close to N350/snail which if multiplied by the large number of snails harvested, will yield a very wide profit margin for the farmer.

One million snails after a year or two sold at the rate of N50 each (highly reduced price) will give about N50 million! Isn’t that a good investment?

Apart from only selling your snails, snails are of high demand in the international market. There a people making millions every month exporting snails. Countries like France,America,Italy ,China etc are importers of snails because they really cherish the nutrient content of the animal.

So starting a snail farming business today will be very good, because if you do it well you will be sure of reaping your millions in the near future and it will be consistent.

Remember the bigger the snail farm, the larger the Income.

This blog post aims to provide a comprehensive guide on how to rear snails in Ghana, highlighting the benefits, essential steps, and potential challenges of snail farming.

Table of Contents

Benefits of Snail Farming in Ghana

Some of the reasons people go into snail farming include;

Nutritional Value

Snails are rich in protein, low in fat, and packed with essential vitamins and minerals, making them a healthy dietary choice.

Economic Viability

Snail farming can provide a lucrative source of income for farmers, especially given the growing demand for locally sourced, organic food.

Low Environmental Impact

Snail farming is environmentally friendly, requiring minimal land, water, and feed resources compared to traditional livestock farming.

Cultural Significance

Snails hold cultural importance in Ghanaian cuisine and are often featured in traditional dishes, increasing the market demand.

Steps to Rear Snails

Snail farming is a very technical and lucrative project to embark on. The steps to the rearing of snails include;

1. Species Selection

Opt for indigenous snail species like the Giant African Land Snail (Achatina achatina) or the Ghana Tiger Snail (Achatina marginata). These species are well-suited to the local climate and are resilient against diseases.

2. Housing and Enclosure

  • Choose a shaded area to prevent excessive exposure to direct sunlight, which can dehydrate the snails.
  • Build enclosures using locally available materials like wood and wire mesh, ensuring proper ventilation and protection from predators.

3. Soil Management

  • Snails require a damp environment. Provide a mixture of loamy soil and decomposed organic matter to maintain the right humidity levels.
  • Regularly spray the enclosure with water to keep the soil moist.
  • Snails are herbivores. Feed them a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, and leaves.
  • Examples of suitable foods include lettuce, cabbage, banana peels, and pawpaw leaves.
  • Avoid overfeeding to prevent the accumulation of uneaten food, which can attract pests and cause health issues for the snails.

5. Breeding

  • Snails are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs. However, two snails are required for mating.
  • Provide suitable hiding spots and moisture for the snails to lay their eggs. Collect and incubate the eggs to ensure their safety.

6. Pest and Disease Management

  • Regularly inspect the snails for signs of disease or infestations.
  • Isolate infected snails to prevent the spread of diseases.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the enclosure to minimize the risk of pests.

7. Harvesting

  • Snails are ready for harvest when they reach a marketable size. This usually takes several months, depending on the species and feeding regime.
  • Use a gentle approach to harvest snails to avoid damaging their shells.

Challenges Faced By Snail Farmers in Ghana And Possible Solutions

Snail farming in Ghana, while promising, comes with its share of challenges. Addressing these challenges with practical solutions is crucial for the success and sustainability of a snail farming venture. Let’s delve into some of the common challenges and their corresponding solutions:

Predators and Pests

Snails are vulnerable to various predators and pests, including birds, rodents, ants, and predatory insects, which can significantly impact snail populations.

  • Secure Enclosures : Build sturdy enclosures using wire mesh and other materials to protect the snails from predators. Ensure the enclosure is properly sealed to prevent entry from small pests.
  • Elevated Platforms : Elevate the enclosures slightly off the ground to reduce the risk of pests accessing the snails.
  • Natural Barriers : Surround the farm with natural barriers such as thorny bushes to deter larger predators.

You can also consider rearing them in a location not so far from where people are living.

Disease and Health Issues

Snails can suffer from various diseases, including bacterial and fungal infections, which can spread quickly in humid environments.

  • Hygiene Management : Maintain a clean and hygienic environment within the enclosures. Regularly remove uneaten food, feces, and any decaying organic matter.
  • Isolation : If a snail shows signs of illness, isolate it immediately to prevent the spread of disease to other snails.

Proper Feeding : Ensure a balanced diet for snails to boost their immune systems and overall health.

Market Demand and Supply

Matching the supply of snails to the market demand is crucial for a successful snail farming business. Overproducing without a reliable market can lead to financial losses.

  • Market Research : Conduct thorough market research to assess the demand for snails in your area. Engage with local markets, restaurants, and individuals to understand their preferences.
  • Networking : Build relationships with local chefs, restaurants, and food suppliers to establish a steady market for your snails.
  • Diversification : Consider processing snails into value-added products like snail meat, snail-based sauces, or canned snail products to extend their shelf life and market reach.

Regulatory Compliance

Navigating the legal and regulatory landscape for snail farming in Ghana can be challenging, with specific guidelines and requirements to follow.

  • Research Regulations : Thoroughly research the regulations governing snail farming in your region. Consult with local agricultural authorities or extension services to ensure compliance.
  • Permit Acquisition : Obtain any necessary permits or licenses required for starting and operating a snail farming business.
  • Documentation : Keep comprehensive records of your farming activities, including feeding regimes, breeding records, and disease management strategies, to demonstrate compliance and good farming practices.

Environmental Factors

Environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall can impact snail health and reproduction.

  • Shade and Shelter : Provide adequate shade and shelter to protect snails from extreme weather conditions.
  • Water Management : Implement proper irrigation and water management systems to maintain optimal humidity levels within the enclosures.
  • Climate Adaptation : Choose snail species that are well-suited to the local climate and make necessary adjustments in enclosure design and management based on seasonal changes.

Addressing these challenges through proactive measures and strategic planning will contribute to the success and sustainability of your snail farming venture in Ghana. Remember that continuous learning and adaptation are key to overcoming obstacles and ensuring the growth of your snail farming business.

Snail farming presents a unique opportunity for sustainable agriculture and economic growth in Ghana. By following the steps outlined in this guide, aspiring snail farmers can embark on a rewarding journey that not only contributes to their livelihoods but also promotes healthy eating habits and preserves the cultural significance of snails in the country’s cuisine. As with any agricultural endeavor, dedication, continuous learning, and proper management are key to a successful snail farming venture.

We know that if we get it right from the onset, we would have succeeded in creating the foundation that will help us build a standard snail farming business that will favorably compete with leading livestock farms in the United States of America and in the rest part of the world.

As a snail farming business, we look forward to maximizing our strength and opportunities and also to work around our weaknesses and threats. Here is a summary from the result of the SWOT analysis that was conducted on behalf of Blake Morrison & Family Farms Ltd;

Our strength as a snail farming business is the fact that we have healthy relationships with loads of major players (agriculture merchants, African communities and intercontinental hotels who serve snail meats) in the meat production industry; both suppliers and buyers within and outside of the United States.

We have some of the latest snail farming tools and equipment that will help us breed snails in commercial quantities with less stress. Aside from our relationship (network) and equipment, we can confidently boast that we have some the most experienced hands in snail farming line of under our payroll.

Aside from the fact that loads of people do not eat snail meat in the United States of America, one of our weaknesses could be that we are a new livestock cum snail farms in the United States and we may not have the required cash to pump into promoting of our business and encourage people to eat snail meat.

We are aware of this and from our projection will overcome this weakness with time and turn it to a major advantage for the business.

  • Opportunities:

Despite the fact that the average Americans do not eat snail meat, the opportunities that are available to us as a snail farming business cannot be quantified, we know that there are loads of African communities and intercontinental hotels that will source for snail meat from our snail farms both in the United States of America and other parts of the world.

13. Startup Expenditure (Budget)

When it comes to calculating the cost of starting a commercial livestock farm cum snail farm, there are some key factors that should serve as a guide. The most important expenses is the construction of the snail farm or confinement as the case may be.

For example, the start – up cost for a fish farm is different from the start – up cost for mechanized crop farming, so also the start – up cost for poultry farming is different from the start – up cost of cattle ranch (dairy farm) et al.

As a matter of fact, if you choose to start a mechanized crop farming, then you should be willing to raise huge capital base to start the business. This is so because some cultivation machines / equipment can be pretty expensive. Below are some of the basic areas we will spend our start – up capital in setting up our commercial livestock cum snail farm;

  • The Total Fee for incorporating the Business in United States of America – $750.
  • The total cost for payment of insurance policy covers (general liability, workers’ compensation and property casualty) coverage at a total premium – $9,400
  • The amount needed to acquire / lease a farm land  – $50,000
  • The amount required for preparing the farm land (for construction of snail cages / fencing et al et al) – $70,000
  • The cost for acquiring the required working tools and equipment / machines / fencing et al– $50,000
  • The amount required for purchase of the first set of snails – $50,000
  • Operational cost for the first 3 months (salaries of employees, payments of bills et al) – $40,000
  • The Cost of Launching an official Website – $600
  • The amount required for payment of workers for a period of 3 months – $100,000
  • Additional Expenditure (Business cards, Signage, Adverts and Promotions et al) – $2,000

Going by the report from detailed research and feasibility studies conducted, we will need an average of $200,000 to start a standard commercial livestock cum snail farming business in the United States of America.

Generating Funding/Startup Capital for Blake Morrison & Family Farms Ltd

No matter how fantastic your business idea might be, if you don’t have the required money to finance the business, the business might not become a reality. Finance is a very important factor when it comes to starting a business such as snail farming.

No doubt raising start – up capital for a business might not come cheap, but it is a task that an entrepreneur must go through.

Blake Morrison & Family Farms Ltd is a family business that will be owned and managed by Blake Morrison and his immediate family members.

They are the sole financial of the firm, but may likely welcome other partners later which is why they decided to restrict the sourcing of the start – up capital for the business to just three major sources. These are the areas where we intend sourcing for fund for Blake Morrison & Family Farms Ltd;

  • Generate part of the start – up capital from personal savings and sale of his stocks
  • Generate part of the start – up capital from friends and other extended family members
  • Generate a larger chunk of the startup capital from the bank (loan facility).

N.B: We have been able to generate about $50,000 (Personal savings $30,000 and soft loan from family members $20,000) and we are at the final stages of obtaining a loan facility of $150,000 from our bank. All the papers and document has been duly signed and submitted, the loan has been approved and any moment from now our account will be credited.

14. Sustainability and Expansion Strategy

The future of a business lies in the numbers of loyal customers that they have the capacity and competence of the employees, their investment strategy and the business structure. If all of these factors are missing from a business (company), then it won’t be too long before the business close shop.

One of our major goals of starting Blake Morrison & Family Farms Ltd is to build a business that will survive off its own cash flow without the need for injecting finance from external sources once the business is officially running.

We know that one of the ways of gaining approval and winning customers over is to sell our farm produce (live snails and processed and packaged snail meat) a little bit cheaper than what is obtainable in the market and we are well prepared to survive on lower profit margin for a while.

Blake Morrison & Family Farms Ltd will make sure that the right foundation, structures and processes are put in place to ensure that our staff welfare are well taken of. Our organization’s corporate culture is designed to drive our business to greater heights and training and retraining of our workforce is at the top burner of our business strategy.

As a matter of fact, profit-sharing arrangement will be made available to all our management staff and it will be based on their performance for a period of five years or more as determined by the management of the organization. CSIR calls for greater investment in snail production

Bunso (E/R), Sept 12, GNA – Professor Paul Bosu, Deputy Director-General of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Ghana (CSIR), has called for substantial investment in snail farming to position Ghana as the chief snail producer and supplier.

He said redirecting significant resources to develop and promote snail production would help Ghana penetrate the global market of snails, to derive the needed benefits, as snail farming required less capital as against other forms of animal rearing.

Prof Bosu made the call in an interview with journalists at the close of a day’s training in snail farming technology at Bunso in the Eastern Region, under the auspicious of CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana.

He encouraged Ghanaians to venture into high level, medium-to-large scale production of snails, because there was an already market, both locally and internationally, due to its delicacy and medicinal benefits.

“Snail meat is not only enjoyed locally, there is a global market for it as well, though there are European snails and other types, but we also have our people in the diaspora who patronise the locally breed snails, the Achatina,” he stated.

He asked people to consider snail rearing in their backyard gardens where it could later be integrated, and others with small spaces in their homes could learn from it.

The training was aimed at equipping young people with the skills and knowledge of snail farming to help improve their livelihoods and boost snail production.

The staff of the National Youth Authority (NYA) in Koforidua, Agricultural Extension Agents and farmers from Bunso, attended the snail rearing session.

Prof Bosu noted that the time had come for much awareness to be created so that a lot of people could be trained to gain basic knowledge on how to rear snails.

He indicated that a combination of the awareness and the training would build the interest of people who would want to venture to see the need to invest it.

“Sometimes when you tell people to attend training on snail farming they will ask, [with] snails too, do we farm them, I thought we collect them from the bush or forest,” he said. He also said, for some time now, his outfit had realised that many people were missing out on the taste of snails and especially the health benefits of being rich in protein, iron, calcium and low in fats.

The decline in snail numbers, he said, had caused it to be expensive, and that the snail population was decreasing due to human activities such as bushfires, deforestation and use of pesticides.

He said the good way to increase snail production to supplement what was harvested from the natural systems was by training people to venture into its production.

“I encourage the youth, even if you have a job and you are not making enough income, you can add snail farming, explore opportunities by acquiring knowledge to supplement your work or venture full time and probably this may end up being what will lead you to your dream,” he said.

Mr Kennedy Datuah, a Veterinary Officer and a participant, urged the youth to venture into snail farming because it required less finance to start and indicated that, everything in the agriculture chain had value in the market.

Another participant, Millicent Amevor from the National Youth Authority office in Koforidua, said before attending the training, she thought snail farming required no teaching, however after the training she had realised that if someone wanted to venture into snail production that person needed to go through the tutorial process to understand its production.

She explained that she never knew snail farming was such a lucrative business and expressed the desire to venture into snail rearing.

The participants were trained on snail biology and types, getting started with snail farming, breeding and management calendar, diseases and pests’ management, marketing and business development and finally visited the snail demonstration centre.

Snail rearing is considered a high profit-yielding farming venture when properly and professionally managed, and provides a cheap source of high-quality animal protein for human consumption.

You can make good profits from this business if you can manage everything perfectly. Here we are trying to describe more about the steps for starting and maintaining a successful business.

Environment Requirement

Right environment is a must for raising snails. The snails are generally easily dehydrated. Dryness occurs in snails due to moisture loose in snails.

Natural wind increase the rate of moisture loss in snails. That’s why, you have to select a suitable location for establishing a your snail farm.

You have to keep the snails in snaileries in wind protected environment. This will prevent the snails from losing water from their body. An area with many trees can make perfect environment for the snails.

Suitable Climate

A mild climate with temperatures between 15°C and 25°C with high humidity (75% to 95%) is considered best for commercial snail farming business. Although, most of the snail varieties can stand a wider range of temperatures.

The optimal temperature is 21°C for many varieties. Snails hibernate, when the temperature falls below 7°C. The snails are inactive under 12°C, and all growth stops under 10°C temperature.

When the temperature rises much above 27°C or conditions become too dry, snails estivate. Wind is bad for snails because it speeds up moisture loss, and snails must retain moisture.

Suitable Soil

Soil is the main habitat of snail, and the soil must have to contain some of the components and chemical substances which are necessary for surviving of the snails.

That’s why all types of soil are not good for commercial snail farming business. Shell of the snails is mainly calcium, and they derive most of the calcium from the soil. They drink water from soil, and they also lay eggs on the soil.

So, it is very important to select a very suitable place with the availability of all types of necessary facilities for the snails. pH range between 5.8 and 7.5 is considered good for snails.

Snails don’t prefer waterlogged situation, and too much dry condition is also harmful for them. Avoid acidic soil, and sandy-loamy soil with low water holding capacity is considered perfect for snail production.

Snailery play a very important role in successful snail farming business. A good snailery keeps the snails safe and productive. The snaileries can vary from a patch of fence-protected ground, sheltered from the wind to a covered box.

You can also make a concrete pen and fill it with about 10 inches soil, or dig a trench and cover it with screen or wire all around. This is helpful for commercial production and will prevent the snails from escaping.

Most of the snails generally love to stay in cold and dark place. Never let harmful animals to enter into the snaileries such as snakes, rats or other predators.

Wire fencing is a great solution for keeping all these animals and predators out. You also have to prevent some smaller but harmful insects such as termites and ants.

You will need some materials for building your snailery such as decay- and termite –resistant timber, such as Milicia excelsa (trade name- iroko); Nauclea diderrichii (trade name- opepe); Lophira alata (trade name – ekki), sandcrete  blocks; mosquito nets and polythene sheets.

These types of materials are required for making each kind of snailery. The types of snaileries are:

  • Hutch boxes
  • Trench pens
  • Mini Paddock pens
  • Moveable pens
  • Free range pens

After making a good environment and snaileries, it’s time to purchase some fresh snails from market or any existing snail farm in your area.

According to some experts, ‘getting snails directly from the wild will result good production, instead of purchasing from market’.

Because the wild snails can easily adapt themselves with the new environment than the farm raised snails. There are many different ways for collecting wild snails.

Feeding the snails with very good quality and nutritious food is the most important part of snail farming business. Because, good food ensure good growth and also good health of the snails.

Snails generally eat fruits, green leaves, vegetables etc. You can feed your snails with easily available materials such as cabbage , cassava leaves, cocoyam, eggplant leaves, lettuce leaves, pawpaw leaves, okra leaves etc.

You can also feed your snails with banana, cucumber , eggplant, mango, pears, oil palm fruits, pawpaw, tomatoes etc.

Snails are naturally very good breeders. They will breed easily and will produce fertile eggs.

Most of the snail breeders allow their snails to mate with one another on their own. If you can keep your snails in ideal conditions, then breeding will occur at higher rates and have more success.

Caring & Other Management

Taking good care of your snails is very important for successful snail farming business. Good caring not only helps the snails to grow better, but also help them to stay free from health problems.

Maintain a hygienic environment for preventing the spread of diseases. Maintaining a hygienic environment will also help to improve the health and growth rate of the snails.

Always try to provide your snails with fresh food. And remove the leftovers on a regular basis. Adding earthworms to the soil is a great way to keep the soil clean.

In high density condition, the snails may be infected by parasites, nematodes, trematodes, fungi and micro arthropods.

Try to prevent all types of harmful predators. Rats, mice, moles, skunks, weasels and birds the main predators of snails.

Snails generally grow very fast. They become mature when a lip forms at the opening of their shell. Their shells are more easily broken, before they mature (making them undesirable).

Keep the fastest, largest and healthy snails for next generation breeders. This is generally around 5% of the harvest, and send the remaining snails for sale.

Snail eggs may also be harvested and processed to produce snail caviar. Special breeding units are required for easy harvesting of the eggs.

You have to set your marketing strategies before starting this business. Because if you can’t market your products easily, then you will not be able to make good profits.

Although, snails and snail products have an established market. It has good demand and value in the international market.

Western word and some African countries are the main consumer of snail. You can also contact with some companies who export snail products to the major consuming countries.

These are the common steps and ways for starting and operating a successful snail farming business. It’s very easy to maintain a profitable business. Hope this guide has helped you! Good luck & may God bless you!
