UW–Madison School of Education ranked No. 1 by U.S. News

UW–Madison’s School of Education is the No. 1 school of education in the United States, according to the 2024 U.S. News & World Report Best Education Graduate Schools rankings released on Tuesday.

It marks the first time the School of Education has received the first-place ranking from U.S. News & World Report, though it has been highly ranked by the organization for decades. For the past 11 years, it has been ranked in the top five schools of education in the country. For 24 of U.S. News’ past 25 rankings, it has been in the top 10. UW–Madison is tied for the top spot with Teachers College, Columbia University.

2024 U.S. News Rankings graphic

“This ranking only confirms what we’ve always known: our School of Education is among the country’s best,” says Charles Lee Isbell Jr., UW–Madison’s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “The School of Education’s highly regarded faculty and staff are conducting groundbreaking research, attracting top students, and preparing future leaders for our state and beyond.”

In addition to its No. 1 overall ranking, 10 graduate programs housed within the UW–Madison School of Education were highly-rated by U.S. News. That includes a No. 1 ranking for the Educational Psychology program.

Dean Diana Hess

Diana Hess, dean of the School of Education, says the rankings reaffirm the School’s place as a national leader in education.

“The No. 1-ranking for our School of Education is a testament to innovative work being done by our talented faculty, staff, and students,” says Hess. “These rankings highlight what we consider a significant strength of ours — and that’s the array of high-quality programs across our School of Education.”

Like the School of Education as a whole, the Department of Educational Psychology has consistently ranked among the very best in the nation. This year marks the seventh time since 2014 that it has been home to the top-ranked Educational Psychology program.

James Wollack, professor and chair of the Department of Educational Psychology, says he is thrilled by the continued recognition of the department and its exceptional faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

“This achievement is a testament to our collective effort that centers on an unwavering focus on enhancing learning and mental health locally and globally,” Wollack says. “This ranking is a reflection of years of rigorous, innovative, and impactful scholarship, a shared commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship, and an unparalleled dedication to serving our profession and community.”

U.S. News & World Report ranks nine graduate program specialty areas in education each year — and once again, the UW–Madison School of Education has programs ranked in the top 15 in all nine areas: No. 1 in Educational Psychology ; No. 2 in Curriculum and Instruction ; No. 2 in Educational Administration ; No. 2 in Elementary Teacher Education ; No. 3 in Secondary Teacher Education ; No. 6 in Special Education ; No. 7 in Education Policy ; No. 8 in Student Counseling ; and No. 13 in Higher Education Administration .

“We are excited that these programs within our department continue to receive such recognition,” says Professor Leema Berland, chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, which is home to highly ranked programs in Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Teacher Education, and Secondary Teacher Education. “We see it as growing out of our department’s consistent focus on social justice across research and practice, and across educational contexts.”

“It is exciting to see how our high rankings in Educational Administration and Higher Education Administration reflect the hard work of staff, students, and faculty in producing high-quality learning experiences and scholarship,” says Professor Anjalé (AJ) Welton, who chairs the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. “Our outstanding alumni also continue to strengthen our reputation as practicing leaders and researchers in the field.”

In addition, the School of Education’s Occupational Therapy program, housed in the Department of Kinesiology, is ranked No. 16 in U.S. News and World Report’s Best Health Graduate Programs rankings.

U.S. News does not rank all specialty programs across all disciplines every year. For example, the School of Education’s Rehabilitation Counseling program, housed in the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education, was ranked No. 1 by U.S. News & World Report last year. That specialty area is only re-ranked by the organization every four years. The School of Education has also long been home to the No. 1 Printmaking program in the country, with U.S. News last ranking Master of Fine Arts programs in 2021.

How the rankings are calculated

To calculate its overall 2024 Best Education Graduate Schools rankings, U.S. News & World Report sent surveys to 456 institutions that grant doctoral education degrees. Of those, 265 responded to the survey, allowing U.S. News to collect statistical and reputational data for its rankings.

U.S. News & World Report derived each education school’s overall rank by scoring it on nine distinct ranking factors that broadly cover: quality assessment (peer assessments and educational professional assessments); research activity (total research expenditures and average expenditures per faculty member); student selectivity (acceptance rate); and faculty resources (total doctoral degrees granted, faculty-to-student ratio, percentage of faculty with awards, and doctorates granted-to-faculty ratio). Learn more about the methodology here .

The UW–Madison School of Education has a long history of being home to both a high-quality faculty and a strong student body, while also excelling in research and on reputational metrics.

Writing about its Best Education Schools methodology, U.S. News & World Report explains: “Graduate programs in education can prepare students for leadership roles at colleges, universities, state and local governments, K-12 schools, and nonprofits. To assist in the search for the best fit program, U.S. News evaluated education schools on research activity, academic excellence of entering students, faculty resources, and opinions on program quality from education school deans and school hiring professionals.”

Education program specialty rankings, U.S. News & World Report explains, are based solely on nominations by education school deans and deans of graduate studies at education schools from the list of schools surveyed. They selected up to 15 top programs in each specialty area.

Similarly, rankings related to health programs came from surveys provided by program directors and faculty in health disciplines.

Master's Student: My undergraduate is the only institution outside of Asia offering a terminal degree in Classical Chinese Dance: an exquisite and comprehensive dance form passed down from ancient China. As a member of the first graduating class, I’ve always wanted to give back. And as the new generation of post-pandemic educators, I aim to lead the college to better serve its talented students: to provide first-class education, support, and opportunities to shine in the global spotlight and bring beauty and joy to audiences around the world. At this watershed point in higher ed, I’m genuinely excited to partake in Harvard Graduate School of Education's world-class learning environment and the mentorship of its distinguished faculty, in the Education Leadership, Organizations, and Entrepreneurship program with a concentration in Higher Ed, which. will equip me with the skills, vision, and insight to become a transformative leader and a dedicated contributor to the teaching and learning world. ... Current Master's student: My academic experience at Duke has been the most rewarding in my life. What makes Duke so great is the opportunity through the Sanford Policy School to exchange and engage ideas with professors and peers connected to my area of policy analysis. I have gotten the chance through summer internships to have real-world policy experience in analysis and implementation. Because my policy analysis is explicitly based on healthcare, I have focused on black maternal outcomes as my point of reference. I have had the opportunity to work with Professor Carolyn Barnes and collaborate since she is an expert in social and economic welfare and its effects on low-income families. The introductory and intermediate microeconomics, macroeconomics, and statistics classes give students a solid technical base when drafting briefs. One thing I would change is to provide more accessibility of recorded lectures when sick after the coronavirus. ... Read 4 reviews

Alum: The one-year intensive teacher certification program is indeed rigorous and demanding. It's a challenging journey where you might find yourself stretched thin, balancing student teaching in the spring alongside my regular coursework. This can lead to limited rest and personal time. However, the program also offers rapid and visible progress in your skills and confidence. For instance, even if you're naturally reserved or not accustomed to public speaking, the daily requirement of presenting in front of students during your teaching practice pushes you to become more comfortable and adept at it. This experience not only enhances my teaching abilities but also fosters personal growth and professional development in a remarkably short timeframe. ... Read 3 reviews

I have been able to collaborate with an amazing group of peers that make up my cohort to face challenges and concerns that arise in regard to the field of counseling. I have had some great professors who do their best to ensure we have the knowledge we need to be successful. Master's Student: So far I’m almost a year into NYU Steinhardt’s online speech program and I love it! For those who don’t mind online learning and can time manage, this is for you. It gives me more flexibility and encourages me to stay on top of asynchronous work for my zoom meets. Another big plus about this program and why I chose it is that I did not graduate with a bachelor’s in speech or CSD. This program offers most prerequisite classes that extend your plan of study but is so worth it. The only down side is the prerequisites required by ASHA cannot be taken through their program. So while I have taken statistics, a biological and behavioral /social science during my undergrad I will need to take a physical science outside of the program before I start my clinic/practicums. Overall, many of my peers seem to enjoy the program too and even though the program is online for me, the helpfulness and acceptance from professors is truly unmatched. ... Read 28 reviews

This ranking considered factors such as graduation rates, overall graduate earnings and other educational resources to identify great colleges and universities.

Early-Career Earnings

One measure we use to determine the quality of a school is to look at the average salary of master's graduates during the early years of their career. That is, everyone wants their master's degree to be worth something, and salaries are one measure of determining that.

Other Factors We Consider

In addition to the above, you should consider some of the following factors:

  • Major Focus - How many resources a school devotes to education students as compared to other majors.
  • Major Demand - How many other education students want to attend this school to pursue a master's degree.
  • Educational Resources - The amount of money and other resources allocated to students while they are pursuing their degree. These resources include such things as number of students per instructor and education expenditures per student.
  • Student Debt - How much debt education students go into to obtain their master's degree and how well they are able to pay back that debt.
  • Accreditation - Whether a school is regionally accredited and/or accredited by a recognized education related body.

Our full ranking methodology documents in more detail how we consider these factors to identify the best colleges for education students working on their master's degree.

Teachers College Ties for #1 Best Graduate School of Education

Teachers college ties for #1 best graduate school of education in u.s. news & world report rankings.

#1 Graduate School of Education - U.S. News and World Report

Teachers College ties for 1st overall as the nation’s top Graduate School of Education for 2023-2024 according to U.S. News & World Report , which released the list on April 25.

“This year's results reflect the progress and hard work of our entire community — our faculty, staff, students, alumni, Trustees, donors, friends and supporters — to build TC for the future and continue our pursuit of a smarter, healthier, more equitable world,” wrote President Thomas Bailey this morning.

TC’s top place is a climb of six spots, rising from 7th last year. The College’s gains in research funding and public prominence were driving factors in this shift, in addition to how U.S. News & World Report adjusted its rankings methodology. Key updates in U.S. News ’ methodology include:

  • Increased emphasis on total research expenditures and funded research per faculty member
  • Increased emphasis on faculty resources, including the number of degrees granted, student-faculty ratios, faculty honors and more
  • Statistical methods to account for data outliers related to institutional size
  • Reduced emphasis on quality assessment from peers and experts, as well as on student selectivity

The College’s progress in the area of research was particularly important to this achievement. TC ranked second in total research expenditures ($65.2 million) among the top ten ranked schools, and increased its funded research per faculty member, a product of the College’s concerted efforts to strengthen research funding and practices at TC. Simultaneously, nine of TC’s specialty areas were ranked this year — with six of them in the top 10 and the remaining top 15 — and overall, the College ranked second in peer and expert assessment.

In his notes to the community, President Bailey acknowledged the “complicated and controversial nature” of the annual U.S. News rankings.  “It is notable,” he wrote, “and cause for celebration — however, that this year’s results reflect the impact of our hard work and focus on our strategic priorities, particularly in the area of research.”

Under the leadership of Vice Dean for Research Carol Hammer and her team, Research@TC houses the College’s stronger infrastructure to support all members of our faculty in winning research grants. These extensive research efforts serve to bolster the College’s reputation as well as to attract top students, faculty and staff to TC. In addition to these victories in research, cultivating student pathways and elevating the work of faculty, the dedication of the entire TC community has contributed to this milestone.

“I am pleased with our progress and remain confident that with our dedicated pursuit of TC’s strategic priorities, will continue to advance TC as an institution through the measures of success we have experienced this year,” President Bailey wrote. “I look forward to continuing our efforts together.”

University of Utah earns top 5 ranking among public schools for entrepreneurship opportunities

By logan stefanich, ksl.com | posted - may 10, 2024 at 3:21 p.m., the front of the j. willard marriott library at the university of utah in salt lake city on sept. 18, 2022. the david eccles school of business at the u. recently received the 12th spot in mba rankings for entrepreneurship. (ben b. braun, deseret news).

Estimated read time: 3-4 minutes

SALT LAKE CITY — The David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah continues to earn high praise when it comes to entrepreneurship, recently receiving the 12th spot in MBA rankings for entrepreneurship according to a 2024 U.S. News and World Report ranking.

The program's positioning in the rankings also comes in as the fifth-best in the nation among public schools.

The latest rankings come on the heels of a U.S. News and World Report from September 2023 that ranked the Eccles School as the seventh-best undergraduate entrepreneurship program overall and fourth-best among public schools for 2024.

"We have a large and growing number of opportunities for entrepreneurs at the University of Utah, and we welcome everyone to learn more and get involved," said Jennifer Brown, chair of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Strategy at the Eccles School, in a statement. "We have leading faculty teaching entrepreneurship. These talented instructors give students the opportunity to learn about business creation in and out of the classroom."

The school's positioning in this year's rendition of the rankings is due in part to the ongoing growth and development of entrepreneurship offerings at the Eccles School, its Department of Entrepreneurship and Strategy, and the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute.

Lassonde Studios — part of the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute — is a living and learning community where students from any major or background can live while creating and launching their business ideas. It's housed in a five-story building at the center of campus, with an innovation space on the first floor and dorm space on the upper levels.

The school, as well as the Lassonde Institute, has student success stories that give weight to its rankings.

In February, Lassonde student Sadie Bowler successfully launched her company — SadieB Personal Care — in 507 Target stores across the nation.

"We really hope to expand even further into retail. There's about 2,000 Target stores, so expand into the rest of Target and then Ulta and Walmart and Kroeger and then globally into Canada," Bowler said.

Another innovative curriculum addition for student entrepreneurs is the Master of Business Creation program at the Eccles School, which focuses on helping a founder grow and scale their company. In 2023, the program expanded to begin offering an online option, providing more flexibility.

On the undergraduate side, the Eccles School in 2019 launched the Lassonde+X program — a three-course program for undergraduates to "learn the entrepreneurial mindset."

Also under the Lassonde umbrella, the Lassonde Founders program is a residential entrepreneur community for incoming students who are active entrepreneurs. There are also options for alumni, with Lassonde For Life launching in 2022 and open to all U. graduates, regardless of degree, to receive "lifelong" entrepreneurial support including workshops, networking opportunities and more.

"The Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute provides all students at the University of Utah with the opportunity to apply what they are learning in class to launch and grow a business and work for themselves when they graduate," said Troy D'Ambrosio, executive director of the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute and assistant dean at the Eccles School, in a statement. "Students at the University of Utah have access to grants, workshops, mentors, and much more to launch a company."

USM School of Education ranked No. 99 in U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Education Schools

H ATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - The University of Southern Miss is getting ready for commencement, but the upcoming graduation isn’t the only event the university is celebrating.

A recent national report is tapping USM having one of the top education schools in the country.

The school is now 99th among the best education schools in the nation according to U.S. News and World 2024 report .

“This means that we are doing exactly what we are supposed to be doing,” said Southern Miss’s College of Education and Human Sciences Dean Dr. Trent Gould. “The University of Southern Mississippi is still doing great things in teacher education. We are still producing effective teachers and leaders to go into every one of these buildings and we are creative innovative programming, and we are going and getting the grants that we need to get to train these teachers.”

The rankings evaluate programs on nine distinct factors. These include indicators related to student selectivity, faculty resources, research activity, and peer assessment.

In 2023, USM was ranked No. 138, and Gould said breaking into the top 100 wouldn’t be possible without those who have worked so hard to help create future Mississippi educators.
