Notre Dame Department of Theology ranked No. 1 in the world by QS World University Rankings

For the second consecutive year, the University of Notre Dame has been ranked as the best in the world in theology, divinity, and religious studies by the influential QS World University Rankings.

The No. 1 ranking is based on academic reputation, employer reputation, and research impact. With an overall score of 92.8, the Department of Theology placed ahead of Harvard University, the University of Oxford, Duke University, and Durham University.

“This recognition is a tribute to the strength and breadth of our faculty's expertise and research, as well as the rich learning community that is created by the talented graduate students who come to study with us, combining probing intellectual curiosity with deep pastoral concern for church and world,” said J. Matthew Ashley , associate professor and acting chair of the department. 

Guided by the ideal of “faith seeking understanding,” the department has six principal areas of research —  moral theology , history of Christianity , liturgy , biblical studies , systematic theology and world religions and world church . 

In addition to offering a Ph.D. and four masters programs , Notre Dame’s theology department maintains a strong commitment to undergraduate education through the more than 500 students who major or minor in theology and in the courses all Notre Dame students take as part of the University’s Core Curriculum .

• UK: £4,778 full-time; £2,389 part-time *
• International: £21,840 full-time; £10,920 part-time (distance learning only)

The same fees apply to both campus-based and distance learning study. The distance learning programme also includes one fully-funded visit to campus in the first year of study.

The above fees quoted are for one year only; for those studying over two or more years, tuition fees will also be payable in subsequent years of your programme.

How To Apply

Application deadlines.

Postgraduate research can start at any time during the year, but it is important to allow time for us to review your application and communicate a decision. If you wish to start in September 2024, we would recommend that you aim to submit your application and supporting documents by 1 June 2024.

If the programme has a Distance learning option then students will usually attend a residential visit in September or January, and those students wishing to attend the September residential are also encouraged to apply by 1 June 2024. The visit will take place at the end of September/beginning of October and you will receive further details once you have accepted your offer.

Please note: While our PhD programmes are normally studied in three years full-time or six years part-time, and Masters-level research programmes one year full-time or two years part-time, many programmes have a longer length listed in course or funding applications. This is because the course length is defined as the maximum period of registration, which includes a period of supervised study plus a thesis awaited period. The maximum period of registration for a full-time PhD is four years (three years supervision plus one year thesis awaited). For a full-time Masters-level research programme, it is two years (one year supervision plus one year thesis awaited). For part-time programmes, the periods are double the full-time equivalent.

Our Standard Requirements

Our requirements for postgraduate research are dependent on the type of programme you are applying for:

• For MRes and MA by Research programmes, entry to our programmes usually requires a good (normally a 2:1 or above) Honours degree, or an equivalent qualification if you were educated outside the UK, usually in a relevant area.
• Applicants for a PhD will also need to hold a Masters qualification at Merit level or above (or its international equivalent), usually in a relevant area.

Any academic and professional qualifications or relevant professional experience you may have are normally taken into account, and in some cases, form an integral part of the entrance requirements.

If you are applying for distance learning research programmes, you will also be required to demonstrate that you have the time, commitment, facilities and experience to study by distance learning.

International students

IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band is equivalent to:

• TOEFL: 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 21 Listening, 22 Speaking and 21 in Writing
• Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 59 in all four skills
• Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced - minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component

International Requirements

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a GPA of 14/20 from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of the Licenciado or an equivalent professional title from a recognised Argentinian university, with a promedio of at least 7.5, may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Applicants for PhD degrees will normally have a Maestria or equivalent

Applicants who hold a Masters degree will be considered for admission to PhD study.

Holders of a good four-year Diplomstudium/Magister or a Masters degree from a recognised university with a minimum overall grade of 2.5 will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students with a good 5-year Specialist Diploma or 4-year Bachelor degree from a recognised higher education institution in Azerbaijan, with a minimum GPA of 4/5 or 80% will be considered for entry to postgraduate taught programmes at the University of Birmingham.

For postgraduate research programmes applicants should have a good 5-year Specialist Diploma (completed after 1991), with a minimum grade point average of 4/5 or 80%, from a recognised higher education institution or a Masters or “Magistr Diplomu” or “Kandidat Nauk” from a recognised higher education institution in Azerbaijan.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 75% from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with a CGPA of 3.0-3.3/4.0 or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Students who hold a Masters degree from the University of Botswana with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0 (70%/B/'very good') will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

Please note 4-year bachelor degrees from the University of Botswana are considered equivalent to a Diploma of Higher Education. 5-year bachelor degrees from the University of Botswana are considered equivalent to a British Bachelor (Ordinary) degree.

Students who have completed a Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

A Licenciatura or Bacharelado degree from a recognised Brazilian university:

• A grade of 7.5/10 for entry to programmes with a 2:1 requirement
• A grade of 6.5/10for entry to programmes with a 2:2 requirement

Holders of a good Bachelors degree with honours (4 to 6 years) from a recognised university with a upper second class grade or higher will be considered for entry to taught postgraduate programmes.  Holders of a good Masters degree from a recognised university will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a good post-2001 Masters degree from a recognised university will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students with a minimum average of 14 out of 20 (or 70%) on a 4-year Licence, Bachelor degree or Diplôme d'Etudes Superieures de Commerce (DESC) or Diplôme d'Ingénieur or a Maîtrise will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

Holders of a bachelor degree with honours from a recognised Canadian university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. A GPA of 3.0/4, 7.0/9 or 75% is usually equivalent to a UK 2.1.

Holders of the Licenciado or equivalent Professional Title from a recognised Chilean university will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Applicants for PhD study will preferably hold a Magister degree or equivalent.

Students with a bachelor’s degree (4 years minimum) may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Holders of the Licenciado/Professional Title from a recognised Colombian university will be considered for our Postgraduate Diploma and Masters degrees. Applicants for PhD degrees will normally have a Maestria or equivalent.

Holders of a good bachelor degree with honours (4 to 6 years) from a recognised university with a upper second class grade or higher will be considered for entry to taught postgraduate programmes.  Holders of a good Masters degree from a recognised university will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a good Bacclaureus (Bachelors) from a recognised Croatian Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 4.0 out of 5.0, vrlo dobar ‘very good’, or a Masters degree, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a Bachelors degree(from the University of the West Indies or the University of Technology) may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. A Class II Upper Division degree is usually equivalent to a UK 2.1. For further details on particular institutions please refer to the list below.  Applicants for PhD level study will preferably hold a Masters degree or Mphil from the University of the West Indies.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good Bachelors degree from a recognised institution with a minimum overall grade of 6.5 out of 10, or a GPA of 3 out of 4, and will usually be required to have completed a good Masters degree to be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Bakalár from a recognised Czech Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 1.5, B, velmi dobre ‘very good’ (post-2004) or 2, velmi dobre ‘good’ (pre-2004), or a good post-2002 Magistr (Masters), will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good Bachelors degree from a recognised institution with a minimum overall grade of 7-10 out of 12 (or 8 out of 13) or higher for 2:1 equivalence and will usually be required to have completed a good Masters/ Magisterkonfereus/Magister Artium degree to be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of the Licenciado or an equivalent professional title from a recognised Ecuadorian university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Grades of 70% or higher can be considered as UK 2.1 equivalent.  Applicants for PhD level study will preferably hold a Magister/Masterado or equivalent qualification, but holders of the Licenciado with excellent grades can be considered.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 75% from a recognised institution. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Bakalaurusekraad from a recognised university with a minimum overall grade of 4/5 or B, or a good one- or two-year Magistrikraad from a recognised university, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Masters degree with very good grades (grade B, 3.5/4 GPA or 85%) will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. 

Holders of a good Kandidaatti / Kandidat (old system), a professional title such as Ekonomi, Diplomi-insinööri, Arkkitehti, Lisensiaatti (in Medicine, Dentistry and Vetinary Medicine), or a Maisteri / Magister (new system), Lisensiaatti / Licenciat, Oikeustieteen Kandidaatti / Juris Kandidat (new system) or Proviisori / Provisor from a recognised Finnish Higher Education institution, with a minimum overall grade of 2/3 or 4/5, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters/Maîtrise with a minimum overall grade of 13 out of 20, or a Magistère / Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies / Diplôme d'Etudes Supérieures Specialisées / Mastère Specialis, from a recognised French university or Grande École to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a Magister Artium, a Diplom or an Erstes Staatsexamen from a recognised university with a minimum overall grade of 2.5, or a good two-year Lizentiat / Aufbaustudium / Zweites Staatsexamen or a Masters degree from a recognised university, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1) with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0 Students who have completed a Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good four-year Ptychio (Bachelor degree) with a minimum overall grade of 6.5 out of 10, from a recognised Greek university (AEI), and will usually be required to have completed a good Metaptychiako Diploma Eidikefsis (Masters degree) from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

4-year Licenciado is deemed equivalent to a UK bachelors degree. A score of 75 or higher from Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC) can be considered comparable to a UK 2.1, 60 is comparable to a UK 2.2.  Private universities have a higher pass mark, so 80 or higher should be considered comparable to a UK 2.1, 70 is comparable to a UK 2.2

The Hong Kong Bachelor degree is considered comparable to British Bachelor degree standard. Students with bachelor degrees awarded by universities in Hong Kong may be considered for entry to one of our postgraduate degree programmes.

Students with Masters degrees may be considered for PhD study.

Holders of a good Alapfokozat / Alapképzés or Egyetemi Oklevel from a recognised university with a minimum overall grade of 3.5, or a good Mesterfokozat (Masters degree) or Egyetemi Doktor (university doctorate), will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with a 60% or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of the 4 year Sarjana (S1) from a recognised Indonesian institution will be considered for postgraduate study. Entry requirements vary with a minimum requirement of a GPA of 2.8.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a score of 14/20 or 70% from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree from a recognised institution, with 100 out of 110 or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Students who hold the Maitrise, Diplome d'Etude Approfondies, Diplome d'Etude Superieures or Diplome d'Etude Superieures Specialisees will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees (14-15/20 or Bien from a well ranked institution is considered comparable to a UK 2.1, while a score of 12-13/20 or Assez Bien is considered comparable to a UK 2.2).

Students with a Bachelor degree from a recognised university in Japan will be considered for entry to a postgraduate Masters degree provided they achieve a sufficiently high overall score in their first (Bachelor) degree. A GPA of 3.0/4.0 or a B average from a good Japanese university is usually considered equivalent to a UK 2:1.

Students with a Masters degree from a recognised university in Japan will be considered for PhD study. A high overall grade will be necessary to be considered.

Students who have completed their Specialist Diploma Мамаң дипломы/Диплом специалиста) or "Magistr" (Магистр дипломы/Диплом магистра) degree (completed after 1991) from a recognised higher education institution, with a minimum GPA of 2.67/4.00 for courses requiring a UK lower second and 3.00/4.00 for courses requiring a UK upper second class degree, will be considered for entry to postgraduate Masters degrees and, occasionally, directly for PhD degrees.  Holders of a Bachelor "Bakalavr" degree (Бакалавр дипломы/Диплом бакалавра) from a recognised higher education institution, with a minimum GPA of  2.67/4.00 for courses requiring a UK lower second and 3.00/4.00 for courses requiring a UK upper second class degree, may also be considered for entry to taught postgraduate programmes.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1) with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/50

Holders of a good Postgraduate Diploma (professional programme) from a recognised university or institution of Higher Education, with a minimum overall grade of 7.5 out of 10, or a post-2000 Magistrs, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a score of 16/20 or 80% from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a Bachelors degree from a recognised university in Libya will be considered for postgraduate study. Holders of a Bachelors degree will normally be expected to have achieved score of 70% for 2:1 equivalency or 65% for 2:2 equivalency. Alternatively students will require a minimum of 3.0/4.0 or BB to be considered.

Holders of a good pre-2001 Magistras from a recognised university with a minimum overall grade of 8 out of 10, or a good post-2001 Magistras, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes

Holders of a good Bachelors degree from a recognised Luxembourgish Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 16 out of 20, or a Diplôme d'Études Supérieures Spécialisées (comparable to a UK PGDip) or Masters degree from a recognised Luxembourgish Higher Education institution will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Masters degree will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees (70-74% or A or Marginal Distinction from a well ranked institution is considered comparable to a UK 2.1, while a score of 60-69% or B or Bare Distinction/Credit is considered comparable to a UK 2.2).

Holders of a Bachelors degree from a recognised Malaysian institution (usually achieved with the equivalent of a second class upper or a grade point average minimum of 3.0) will be considered for postgraduate study at Diploma or Masters level.

Holders of a good Bachelors degree from the University of Malta with a minimum grade of 2:1 (Hons), and/or a Masters degree, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree (Honours) from a recognised institution (including the University of Mauritius) will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.  Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2:1).

Students who hold the Licenciado/Professional Titulo from a recognised Mexican university with a promedio of at least 8 will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

Students who have completed a Maestria from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree, licence or Maîtrise and a Masters degree, with a score of 14/20 or 70% from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Students with a good four year honours degree from a recognised university will be considered for postgraduate study at the University of Birmingham. PhD applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with 60-74% or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Doctoraal from a recognised Dutch university with a minimum overall grade of 7 out of 10, and/or a good Masters degree, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree (minimum 4 years and/or level 400) from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.  Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1) with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good Bachelors degree from a recognised institution with a minimum GPA of B/Very Good or 1.6-2.5 for a 2.1 equivalency, and will usually be required to have completed a good Masters, Mastergrad, Magister. Artium, Sivilingeniør, Candidatus realium or Candidatus philologiae degree to be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with a CGPA of 3.0/4 or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a Bachelors degree from a recognised university in the Palestinian Territories will be considered for postgraduate study. Holders of Bachelors degree will normally be expected to have achieved a GPA of 3/4 or 80% for 2:1 equivalency or a GPA of 2.5/4 or 70% for 2:2 equivalency.    

Holders of the Título de Licenciado /Título de (4-6 years) or an equivalent professional title from a recognised Paraguayan university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Grades of 4/5 or higher can be considered as UK 2.1 equivalent.  The Título Intermedio is a 2-3 year degree and is equivalent to a HNC, it is not suitable for postgraduate entry but holders of this award could be considered for second year undergraduate entry or pre-Masters.  Applicants for PhD level study will preferably hold a Título de Maestría / Magister or equivalent qualification, but holders of the Título/Grado de Licenciado/a with excellent grades can be considered.

Holders of the Licenciado, with at least 13/20 may be considered as UK 2.1 equivalent. The Grado de Bachiller is equivalent to an ordinary degree, so grades of 15+/20 are required.  Applicants for PhD level study will preferably hold a Título de Maestría or equivalent qualification.

Holders of a good pre-2001 Magister from a recognised Polish university with a minimum overall grade of 4 out of 5, dobry ‘good’, and/or a good Swiadectwo Ukonczenia Studiów Podyplomowych (Certificate of Postgraduate Study) or post-2001 Magister from a recognised Polish university with a minimum overall grade of 4.5/4+ out of 5, dobry plus 'better than good', will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a good Licenciado from a recognised university, or a Diploma de Estudos Superiores Especializados (DESE) from a recognised Polytechnic Institution, with a minimum overall grade of 16 out of 20, and/or a good Mestrado / Mestre (Masters) from a recognised university, will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good Bachelors degree from a recognised Romanian Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 8 out of 10, and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree/Diploma de Master/Diploma de Studii Academice Postuniversitare (Postgraduate Diploma - Academic Studies) or Diploma de Studii Postuniversitare de Specializare (Postgraduate Diploma - Specialised Studies) to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Диплом Специалиста (Specialist Diploma) or Диплом Магистра (Magistr) degree from recognised universities in Russia (minimum GPA of 4.0) will be considered for entry to taught postgraduate programmes/PhD study.

Students who hold a 4-year Bachelor degree with at least 16/20 or 70% will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.   

Students who hold a Maitrise, Diplome d'Etude Approfondies,Diplome d'Etude Superieures or Diplome d'Etude Superieures Specialisees will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. A score of 14-15/20 or Bien from a well ranked institution is considered comparable to a UK 2.1, while a score of 12-13/20 or Assez Bien is considered comparable to a UK 2.2

Students who hold a Bachelor (Honours) degree from a recognised institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0 (or a score of 60-69% or B+) from a well ranked institution will be considered for most our Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees with a 2:1 requirement.

Students holding a good Bachelors Honours degree will be considered for postgraduate study at Diploma or Masters level.

Holders of a good three-year Bakalár or pre-2002 Magister from a recognised Slovakian Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 1.5, B, Vel’mi dobrý ‘very good’, and/or a good Inžinier or a post-2002 Magister from a recognised Slovakian Higher Education institution will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a good Diploma o pridobljeni univerzitetni izobrazbi (Bachelors degree), Diplomant (Professionally oriented first degree), Univerzitetni diplomant (Academically oriented first degree) or Visoko Obrazovanja (until 1999) from a recognised Slovenian Higher Education institution with a minimum overall grade of 8.0 out of 10, and/or a good Diploma specializacija (Postgraduate Diploma) or Magister (Masters) will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Students who hold a Bachelor Honours degree (also known as Baccalaureus Honores / Baccalaureus Cum Honoribus) from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Most Masters programmes will require a second class upper (70%) or a distinction (75%).

Holders of a Masters degree will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Holders of a Bachelor degree from a recognised South Korean institution (usually with the equivalent of a second class upper or a grade point average 3.0/4.0 or 3.2/4.5) will be considered for Masters programmes.

Holders of a good Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study on an individual basis.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and will usually be required to have completed a Masters degree, with 7 out of 10 or higher for 2:1 equivalency from a recognised institution to be considered for entry. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good "PostGraduate Certificate" or "PostGraduate Diploma" or a Masters degree from a recognised Swiss higher education institution (with a minimum GPA of 5/6 or 8/10 or 2/5 (gut-bien-bene/good) for a 2.1 equivalence) may be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes.

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, with a GPA of 3.0/4.0, 3.5/5 or 75% from a recognised institution to be considered. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

Holders of a good Bachelor degree (from 75% to 85% depending upon the university in Taiwan) from a recognised institution will be considered for postgraduate Masters study. Holders of a good Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.  Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1) Students who have completed a Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

1-5 where 1 is the highest 2.1 = 1.75 2.2 = 2.25 

Out of 4.0 where 4 is the highest 2.1 = 3.0 2.2 = 2.5

Letter grades and percentages 2.1 = B / 3.00 / 83% 2.2 = C+ / 2.5 / 77%

Holders of a postdoctoral qualification from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.  Students may be considered for PhD study if they have a Masters from one of the above listed universities.

Holders of a Lisans Diplomasi with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0/4.0 from a recognised university will be considered for postgraduate study at Diploma or Masters level.

Holders of a Yuksek Diplomasi from a recognised university will be considered for PhD study.

Students who hold a Bachelor degree from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Most Masters programmes will require a second class upper (2.1) or GPA of 3.5/5.0

Applicants for postgraduate research programmes should hold a good Bachelors degree / Диплом бакалавра (Dyplom Bakalavra), Диплом спеціаліста (Specialist Diploma) or a Dyplom Magistra from a recognised Ukrainian higher education institution with a minimum GPA of 4.0/5.0, 3.5/4, 8/12 or 80% or higher for 2:1 equivalence and will usually be required to have completed a good Masters degree to be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes. Applicants with lower grades than this may be considered on an individual basis.

The University will consider students who hold an Honours degree from a recognised institution in the USA with a GPA of:

• 2.8 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for entry to programmes with a 2:2 requirement 
• 3.2 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for entry to programmes with a 2:1 requirement 

Please note that some subjects which are studied at postgraduate level in the USA, eg. Medicine and Law, are traditionally studied at undergraduate level in the UK.

Holders of the Magistr Diplomi (Master's degree) or Diplomi (Specialist Diploma), awarded by prestigious universities, who have attained high grades in their studies will be considered for postgraduate study.  Holders of the Fanlari Nomzodi (Candidate of Science), where appropriate, will be considered for PhD study.

Holders of the Licenciatura/Título or an equivalent professional title from a recognised Venezuelan university may be considered for entry to a postgraduate degree programme. Scales of 1-5, 1-10 and 1-20 are used, an overall score of 70% or equivalent can be considered equivalent to a UK 2.1.  Applicants for PhD level study will preferably hold a Maestria or equivalent qualification

Holders of a Bachelors degree from a recognised Vietnamese institution (usually achieved with the equivalent of a second class upper or a grade point average minimum GPA of 7.0 and above) will be considered for postgraduate study at Diploma or Masters level.  Holders of a Masters degree (thac si) will be considered for entry to PhD programmes.

Students who hold a Masters degree with a minimum GPA of 3.5/5.0 or a mark of 2.0/2.5 (A) will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.   

Students who hold a good Bachelor Honours degree will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

Harvard Tops 2019 World Rankings for Divinity, Theology, Religious Studies

Harvard University was named best in the world for the study of divinity, theology, and religion by the influential QS World University Rankings for 2019 . It was the third year in a row that the School’s programs earned the distinction.

QS, which aims to help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools in their field of interest, named Harvard #1 out of 100 Institutions worldwide. The firm uses a wide-ranging methodology for its rankings, including a school’s academic reputation, employer reputation, academic citations per paper by faculty, and H-Index citations (measuring productivity and the impact of published work by faculty).

“With its partners at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and elsewhere at Harvard, HDS is at the center of an effort to explore all of the world’s major religious traditions and the way that they shape virtually every aspect of human experience,” said Dean David N. Hempton. “We’re proud to be among the outstanding institutions recognized by QS and, like them, will do all we can to continue to improve the quality of our research and teaching in the years ahead.”

Harvard was followed in the rankings by the University of Notre Dame, and by Oxford and Cambridge in the UK. Other U.S. institutions that made the top ten included Yale, Duke, and the University of Chicago.

Boston College ranked 10th worldwide in theology, divinity, and religious studies

2020 QS World University Rankings are based on academic and employer reputation, global research impact

Boston College ranked 10th among universities worldwide in Theology, Divinity, and Religious Studies in the 2020 QS World University Rankings, released today in London. The Theology, Divinity, and Religious Studies ranking is based on academic and employer reputation and global research impact. Boston College was one of only two Catholic institutions among the top 10 schools in the prestigious international survey, along with the University of Notre Dame.

The top 10 schools in the 2020 rankings are: University of Notre Dame, University of Oxford, Harvard University, Durham University, University of Cambridge, Yale University, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Duke University, University of Chicago, and Boston College.

The STM places 98 percent of all its graduates in careers within six months of graduation.

The Theology Department provides undergraduate and graduate students with the knowledge and skills necessary for reasoned reflection on their values, faith, and tradition, as well as on the religious forces that shape our society and world. The department’s five primary areas of research include biblical studies, historical theology/history of Christianity, comparative theology, systematic theology, and theological ethics. The QS Rankings are prepared by British firm Quacquarelli Symonds, which is considered to be among the most influential providers of international university rankings. Its Theology, Divinity, and Religious Studies ranking was launched in 2017.

Tips on Academic Degrees That Relate to Religion

Future religious leaders can prepare for their careers at seminaries or divinity schools.

The study of religion at the collegiate or graduate level can be approached from an academic perspective, a faith-based point of view or a combination of the two.

Anyone who finds religion fascinating and who cares about the subject can pursue an academic degree in this area.

Enthusiastic disciples of either a well-known world religion such as Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam and Taoism or an arcane regional faith such as Santería often seek greater understanding of their beliefs, traditions and rituals. Some desire clarity about how their personal religious doctrines and customs compare to those of others. Devout individuals, whose major life decisions are guided by theology, frequently wish to gain divine enlightenment through exposure to inspiring preachers and a zealous search for guidance on how to be godly.

Meanwhile, secular individuals could feel curious about the doctrines and behaviors of religious people who are different from themselves, or they may want to investigate how religion influences society.

"People think that you have to be religious to major in religious studies and that is so completely not true," explains Jeanne Kilde, director of the religious studies program at the University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts. "Most of our students, in fact, have very little religious background."

How Divinity, Ministry and Theology Compare to Religious Studies

Individuals with religion-related advanced degrees say there is a clear and important distinction between the closely related academic disciplines of divinity, ministry and theology – each of which presumes some kind of religious conviction – and the field of religious studies, which neither assumes nor requires pious intent.

"For me as a religious studies scholar, I look at what religious people are doing and saying," Vivian Asimos, a researcher with a Ph.D. degree in religious studies from Durham University in the United Kingdom, wrote in an email. "Whether their religious beliefs are 'right' or not isn't really important to me – that doesn't change what they're doing and saying. So that's what I focus on."

Asimos, the main director of the academic website Alt-ac.uk and founder of the educational website IncidentalMythology.com, adds: "We tend to borrow from sociology and anthropology, but you can also see traces of history, literature, and other disciplines as well."

In contrast, degrees in divinity, ministry or theology are often aimed at current or future preachers, missionaries and theologians who intend to provide spiritual instruction to others. M.A. and Ph.D. degrees relating to religion, such as those focusing on religious philosophies, generally involve assessing faith traditions from a neutral point of view, which does not favor one perspective over another.

According to the American Academy of Religion, a nonsectarian scholarly society focused on academic analysis and public understanding of religion, degrees relating to divinity, ministry or theology are usually professional degrees aimed at preparing someone for a religious vocation.

Religiously Affiliated Colleges vs. Theological Seminaries vs. Divinity Schools

Anyone who intends to study religion in college, graduate school or both should understand that many types of academic institutions provide this type of education. College hopefuls may want to attend a religiously affiliated undergraduate institution that reflects their values and upbringing. For evangelical Protestant Christians, that may mean looking at Bible colleges, whereas Catholics may wish to attend one of the world's numerous Catholic universities .

Meanwhile, at the graduate level, prospective students may elect to attend a theological seminary associated with a specific faith, such as Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Massachusetts, the Institute of Buddhist Studies in California or The Islamic Seminary of America in Texas. Alternatively, they can attend a university-affiliated school, like Harvard Divinity School in Massachusetts, that educates future faith leaders and trains objective scholars who provide insight into religious cultures.

Deepak Sarma, professor of Indian religions and philosophy at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, says someone who is religiously and academically oriented can benefit from attending a divinity school connected to a large university.

"You become part of a much larger kind of intellectual world, whereas if you were at a seminary, it's really independent of any university at all, and it's a very different sort of thing," says Sarma, who earned a Ph.D. in the philosophy of religions at the University of Chicago Divinity School .

Anyone enrolling at a pluralist divinity school should go in expecting to hear opinions from classmates and professors with divergent religious beliefs, Sarma says. "You have to be open to being exposed to lots of different religions and speaking on behalf of your own," says Sarma, who identifies as Hindu American. "You have to become the spokesperson for your religion."

There are challenges associated with being within a religious minority at a divinity school, and it can feel "isolating" at times, Sarma says. Yet he notes that he learned valuable lessons from peers and teachers whose backgrounds differed from his.

What a Career as a Religious Leader Is Like

Compensation varies widely within faith-related occupations, depending on the size of the congregation or organization where someone is based and the pay patterns within the religious denomination, according to experts. It is possible to combine a religious job with a secular one, which is common in remote areas where houses of worship tend to have a small number of congregants, experts say.

"It is also fairly common in church-planting roles, where a stable congregation or funding source does not yet exist," Jaimie Eckert, a Seventh-day Adventist Church ministry leader, wrote in an email.

"In recent decades, faith organizations around the world have taken inspiration from the Apostle Paul, who engaged in bivocational ministry as a tentmaker and an evangelist. In some denominations, these bivocational ministers are called 'tentmakers' because they combine a traditional blue or white collar job with religious work – sometimes 50/50, or sometimes working five days per week and dedicating the weekend to ministry. Tentmaker ministry is sometimes a permanent career choice and sometimes a transitional one."

How to Become a Faith Leader and Why

The standard training regimen for potential faith leaders depends on the religious group, though generally there must be some formal education in religion such as a theology degree, experts explain. The following steps are usually mandatory for a religious career.

Pursue higher education in religion.

"Religious education methods vary according to faith traditions and denominations or sects within each tradition," explains Eckert, who is pursuing a doctorate in missiology, which is the study of missionary techniques and practices. "Within the Christian tradition, for example, the Catholic and Orthodox branches tend to emphasize Christian history and the writings of the Church Fathers; mainline Protestant traditions emphasize the Biblical languages (Greek and Hebrew) and Biblical exegesis; Evangelical or Charismatic traditions may emphasize pragmatic Christian witness, such as evangelism, deliverance ministries, community development, and the acts of the Holy Spirit."

Eckert, who provides spiritual counseling through her website Scrupulosity.com, notes that the Seventh-day Adventist educational system in which she was trained tends to combine doctrinal lessons with hands-on service projects and jobs, many of which require manual labor.

"This educational system granted me two benefits: first of all, my body and brain were taxed equally throughout my academic years, helping me to avoid mental burnout," she says. "Secondly, as a graduate I had an immense pragmatic edge over students from other universities. An educational system that combined theory with practice meant that I could enter upon a ministry role in any context– in the US or abroad – and be prepared to serve my community in any way needed. If necessary, I could grow food; I could cook and serve meals; I could write and edit fundraising newsletters; I could handle basic medical care; and I could preach the Word."

Assess your reasons for joining the clergy and your character.

A generous disposition is necessary for a career as a religious leader, experts say.

"An individual who is interested in choosing the rabbinate must first and foremost be interested not in himself but in others," Rabbi Yosef Kalinsky, who has a Ph.D. in social welfare and serves as dean of undergraduate Torah studies at Yeshiva University in New York City, explained in an email. "He should view his role as one who cares for the underprivileged and who can inspire others to greatness. A rabbi should exude kindness and overall be and act as a role model and mensch," which is a person of honor and integrity.

Eckert emphasizes that cleverness and eloquence are not sufficient to make someone an excellent religious leader.

"Many people feel that the ability to exegete religious texts and preach a good homily is the qualifying feature of a religious worker," she says. "However, many hiring entities are most interested in high-quality interpersonal skills – not only for interactions with parishioners, but also for the extended ministry team. Running a religious organization is similar to running a nonprofit – the team needs to be motivated through the heart, not through the pocketbook."

She adds that arrogance and callousness are disqualifying traits for someone who intends to work at a religious organization.

"Most people who have been in ministry for any length of time – even those working in smaller houses of worship in contrast to larger ministry organizations – have nightmare stories they can tell about narcissistic, type-A leaders who can preach well but wreak havoc on every interpersonal relationship in the organization," she says. "It is hard to weed these characters out of the lineup of resumes because they tend to present very impressive qualifications, are self-confident, and speak well. But the narcissistic type of faith leader is the worst possible fit for his role because of how he harms so many others who are trying to be a positive force for good in the world."

Kindness, patience and emotional intelligence, Eckert emphasizes, are must-have qualities for religious leaders.

Guide to Theology PhD Programs

The first ever PhD was awarded in the 12th century . While these days you can get a PhD in almost any field of study, in those early years the three main areas were law, medicine, and theology. If you’re interested in earning your PhD in theology, you’re embarking on a sacred, historical pursuit.

Even though this type of program has been around since the invention of PhDs, you probably still have some questions. In addition to the basics, this guide will review program structure, costs, coursework, dissertations, and more. We’ll end with a directory of over 150 programs for you to explore.

What Are PhD in Theology Programs?

A PhD in theology is a research-focused doctoral program for students who are interested not only in an exhaustive study of theology but also in making original contributions to the field through their own research. Theology, by definition, is the study of God. Students in these programs will spend about 4–5 years utilizing various modalities in pursuit of this topic.

You can earn your PhD in theology from many universities around the country. If you’re looking for an Ivy League education, you can earn your doctorate from a school like Princeton or Harvard . If you want to attend a doctorate program at a Christian university, there are excellent options like Wheaton or Moody . Or maybe you want something in between those options and are drawn to a school like Notre Dame . Whatever you value in a school, you have many possibilities!

PhD in Theology vs. ThD (Doctor of Theology) vs. DMin (Doctor of Ministry) Programs

When researching PhD programs, you will find variations in degree names. While there are many programs specifically labeled “PhD in Theology,” you’ll also discover others like “ThD” or “ Doctor of Ministry .” Let’s look at some similarities and differences between these three:

One of the initial decisions you’ll need to make is whether you prefer to pursue a theoretical discipline or a practical discipline and if your interest lies exclusively in Christian theology or extends to the study of theology beyond Christianity.

PhD in Theology Program Overview

While there are several degree options, for the sake of simplicity, let’s look a little deeper into what your standard PhD in theology program might entail. There will obviously be great variations based on schools and the type of degree, but this overview should give you a good glimpse into what to expect.

Program Structure

A PhD program is typically structured into two main phases. First is the coursework and languages phase. Students take courses, complete assignments, and have exams or reviews. This usually takes around two years and, at some schools, can overlap a bit with the second stage.

Phase two is where things take a turn. After a couple of years of taking courses, students begin the two-to-three-year dissertation phase. This is where they undertake substantial research in order to produce original ideas, advancements, or theories within their scope of study based on their research findings. (We’ll cover more dissertation details in just a bit.)

As an example, here’s a brief overview of the PhD program at Princeton .

Curriculum and Coursework

Because a PhD is so focused on original research and contribution, there are many variations on curriculum and coursework based on students’ individual pursuits. But let’s look at a sample program from Notre Dame to get a basic idea of what kind of coursework to expect.

Like most (if not all) PhD in theology programs, Notre Dame has language course mandates. They necessitate “basic competence in two modern languages and one ancient language.” All Notre Dame PhD students must fulfill these requirements regardless of their specific areas of interest.

After that it gets a bit more varied. Under the PhD in theology umbrella, Notre Dame has six areas of coursework concentration, from which each student must choose one: Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity, History of Christianity, Liturgical Studies, Moral Theology/Christian Ethics, Systematic Theology, or World Religions and World Church.

Coursework comprises classes based on the student’s specific area of focus combined with intensive language studies.

Theology PhD Dissertation

As previously noted, the dissertation is a huge component of a PhD program. Within their particular area of focus, students will choose a research topic and spend years conducting original research in order to contribute new information to their field of study.

After completing research, students will compile a report, proposal, book, or other appropriate medium to present their findings. They must participate in a dissertation defense, which happens in front of a committee and other members of the school and/or community. Successful presentation and defense of their dissertation before the committee will lead to the conferral of a doctorate degree.

How Much Do Theology PhD Programs Cost?

It may be surprising to learn that the cost of a PhD program can vary wildly, ranging anywhere from completely free to quite expensive.

Free? You heard right. Some colleges award full tuition funding or fellowships to students in good standing. Fellowship programs can offer free tuition, stipends, and even sometimes health insurance. In exchange, students spend at least a couple of years teaching or working as graduate assistants in undergraduate- or master’s-level programs. Check out Notre Dame or Wheaton for examples of this.

On the other end, some schools operate with a more familiar tuition model. Fuller’s entire program, for instance, is around $50,000 in tuition. Graduate Theological Union is substantially pricier at $37,200 per year. Some of these schools offer financial aid or scholarship opportunities.

What Can You Do with a PhD in Theology?

A PhD in theology can open many doors—especially when it comes to academia. More often than not, universities and colleges require professors to have a doctorate. Over 70% of PhD in theology graduates pursue a career in academia, with an additional 6% continuing to earn another post-doctoral degree.

That being said, graduates certainly aren’t limited to academia. Over 20% of graduates choose a different road. Other career paths include leadership positions within denominational organizations, author, pastor, head of large faith-based organizations, college president, government positions, and more.

The Overseas Ministries Study Center (OMSC), a research and training institute at Princeton Theological Seminary, is rolling out a series of online programs aimed at making its expertise on world Christianity available to students, scholars, and theologians across the Global South.

OMSC introduced a graduate-level remote course in lived theology during the 2022-2023 academic year and is now adding mini courses, a YouTube channel, and a podcast that are expected to go live in 2024. The center has also introduced a blog, “ The Occasional ,” that offers a lively mix of news and perspective pieces from OMSC staff, and the center’s global network of scholars, clergy, and lay leaders.

OMSC’s goal is to reach audiences in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Oceania where Christianity has been growing rapidly for decades and where new scholars and theological approaches are emerging.

“We want to support emerging scholars and connect them to the larger conversation that’s taking place around world Christianity,” says Easten Law, the center’s assistant director for academic programs. “This is a multiple phase process, and the goal is to develop a diversity of online resources for learning about the world church, and to get resources into the hands of the world church.”

OMSC Director Soojin Chung agreed. “These digital programs open a new chapter in our historic mission to amplify the voices of the world Christian movement,” she said.

OMSC, which became part of Princeton Seminary in 2019 after nearly a century as an independent non-profit research center, is known for its pioneering research on world Christianity. The center publishes a noted research journal, International Bulletin of Mission Research , translates the work of global scholars into English, and holds a yearlong residential study program that brings scholars from around the world to the Seminary campus.

Chung noted that OMSC is respected in academic circles for disseminating research from non-Western scholars. The new online programs, she says, will help bring the work of those indigenous scholars to new audiences worldwide.

“This type of creative and dynamic online programming provides new avenues for Christians from around the globe to narrate their own stories,” she said.

Law began expanding the center’s online outreach during the pandemic with an eye toward reaching audiences interested in studying theology in the context of world Christianity but unable to travel to Princeton. His first project —a two-semester course and certificate called “Lived Theology and World Christianity"—drew students from Nigeria, Uganda, India, South Korea, and Japan.

The topic of lived theology—an emerging field that focuses on the study of everyday life through a theological lens—proved a strong draw for students, many of whom were already working in ministry or doing graduate work, Law said.

The course provided a novel mix of reflection and hands-on research, with students able to make their own ministries or local cultures the focus of a capstone project.

One student, an Anglican priest from Uganda, explored the experience of Ugandan migrant laborers in the Persian Gulf. Another student, a pastor who teaches at a Christian high school in Japan, examined the varying levels of faith commitment among the school’s alumni.

“This is simply a great way to understand Christianity as a world religion,” he said. “It benefits people to understand how Christianity is practiced in different contexts, and it enriches us denominationally to have discourse with other Christian traditions.”

“We wanted to offer something that other schools weren’t doing,” Law said. “Lived theology provides members of the world church a means for looking at their own lives and contexts as an important source for theological reflection.”

“What makes this course particularly distinctive is that many of the students are in fact clergy or practitioners, and their own cultural contexts become the subject of their research.”

The course is now in its second year, and Law has added two facilitators located in Europe and Asia who, along with himself, can meet with and advise students in real time despite their disparate locations.

“We are trying to make this course a really high touch experience,” he said, “Online learning half a world away can feel lonely and we want every student to feel supported.”

OMSC is expressing its commitment to online learning in other ways. This fall, meanwhile, the OMSC is planning to launch two additional digital initiatives: a series of minicourses and a YouTube channel/podcast called the OMSC Roundtable.

The minicourses, or asynchronous learning modules, seek to draw a similar audience as the lived theology course: Those wanting to build their knowledge and credentials on topics such as mission studies, intercultural theology, and world Christianity. For a modest fee, anyone can get instant access to the courses, which include pre-recorded lectures from top scholars, a curated set of readings that expand on the lectures, and a set of follow up questions.

“For those curious about what people might be talking about in world Christianity, these modules make for a great entry point or steppingstone, especially for masters level students, and also PhD candidates,” said Byung Ho Choi, a Princeton Seminary doctoral candidate who works with the OMSC and designed the courses.

Choi said the minicourses will also resonate with people from all walks of life, including clergy, seminary students, and lay people worldwide.

Choi is also preparing content for the OMSC’s YouTube channel, which will be called “The Roundtable,” and will feature interviews with both established and up-and-coming scholars in a relaxed and conversational setting.

“We want to show who the rising stars of world Christianity and mission studies are, and to highlight the pioneering scholars who paved the way,” he said, adding that the interviews will also be repackaged as a podcast.

For now, those wanting to get acquainted with world Christianity can check out the OMSC blog, “ The Occasional ,” which takes readers across the world with articles ranging from “ Prayer Camps and Faith-Healing in Ghana ,” to “ Anti-Christian Policies in the History of Japan ” to “ Latin American Pentecostal Communities in a Pandemic Stricken Madrid .”

Law said the mix of online offerings gives everyone from casual observers to serious scholars the chance to participate and to decide their level of involvement. “We’re really thinking about online learning from multiple standpoints—from a quick read of a blog post to a full, two-semester course, and everything in between,” he said.

Uo graduate programs named top 10 by u.s. news & world report.

University of Oregon graduate programs in education and law specialty programs are among the top in the country, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Grad Schools 2024.

The UO College of Education’s special education program is ranked No. 3 in the nation for the 25th year in a row and is No. 2 among public schools.   The special education program’s success is boosted in part due to the college’s accomplished faculty, national reputation and record-high year in funded research: $57.36 million. 

“The special education program allows students to learn from leading researchers,” said Laura Lee McIntyre, dean of the College of Education. “Our faculty are pushing the field forward to improve the lives of children and families, and students are actively engaged in the process through coursework, applied practice and research. Graduates of the program are highly sought after, future leaders in the field.” 

The University of Oregon School of Law is the only Pacific Northwest law school to boast three top-ranked specialty programs. Oregon Law’s Legal Research and Writing Program leads the way at No. 1. This is the second year the school holds the top spot alone and marks the 17th consecutive year in the top 10 nationally. 

“Our LRW faculty at Oregon Law are leaders and innovators with national recognition,” said Suzanne Rowe, James L. and llene R. Hershner Professor and director of legal research and writing. “Our faculty earn awards for teaching and service, lead national organizations and scholarly journals, and publish important books and articles. The LRW program is proud to continue its long tradition, since 1978, of preparing students for real-world legal practice. 

Oregon Law’s  Environmental and Natural Resources Law Center continues a legacy of leadership in environmental law, receiving the No. 7 ranking in the nation, up two spots from the previous year. 

“Motivated by our accomplishments, our shared aspirations, and our sense of urgency,  our community is excited to be recognized for our focus on problem-solving and accelerating meaningful change across legal and environmental fields,” said Mary Wood, Philip H. Knight Professor of Law and faculty director for the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Center.

Oregon Law’s  Appropriate Dispute Resolution Program is No. 11. For more than 20 years, the award-winning Appropriate Dispute Resolution Center has maintained a national reputation by providing students with an educational experience that emphasizes skillful management of disputes, deals and decision-making.  

“To continue to be named a top dispute resolution program is a testament to our expert faculty leading the way in developing innovative approaches in and outside the classroom,” said Jennifer Reynolds, Orlando John and Marian H. Hollis Professor of Law, associate dean for academic affairs, and faculty director for the Appropriate Dispute Resolution Center. “Our commitment to excellent teaching and skills-based learning helps our students manage complex interactions insides and outside traditional legal settings.”

USM School of Education Ranked in U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Education Schools

The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) School of Education has been ranked No. 99 among the 2024 Best Education Schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Designed for prospective students looking to advance their education, the Best Education Schools rankings evaluate programs on nine distinct factors that include indicators related to student selectivity, faculty resources, research activity and peer assessment. The rankings evaluate all public and private institutions across the country to empower prospective students to choose the best fit for their educational needs and career goals.

“The USM School of Education has been intentional in its efforts to increase the societal impact it makes in the state and region. This ranking is clear evidence of their daily dedication to our mission of transforming the human condition through exemplary teaching, excellence in research, and meaningful service,” said Dr. Trent Gould, dean of Southern Miss’ College of Education and Human Sciences. “I couldn’t be prouder of this group of faculty and their commitment to this community and our K-12 partners.”

By collecting education school data annually, U.S. News is able to present the latest enrollment numbers, job placement rates, faculty statistics and other essential quality indicators that help prospective students make informed decisions. In 2023, USM ranked No. 138. The year-over-year climb that allowed USM to break into the top 100 schools was achieved in part by other colleges of education across the nation taking notice of the impact Golden Eagles are making and commending those efforts through the peer evaluation process.

U.S. News & World Report releases high school rankings. See where Volusia, Flagler fall

U.S. News & World Report released its annual high school rankings Tuesday with some Flagler and Volusia county schools exceeding last year's numbers.

Almost 25,000 public high schools nationwide were reviewed, and of those, 17,655 schools were ranked.

Rankings are based on six categories, each weighted differently: college readiness (30%); college curriculum breadth (10%); state assessment proficiency (20%); state assessment performance (20%); underserved student performance (10%); and graduation rate (10%).

The top school in Florida was Sarasota County's Pine View School, which was slated 18th nationwide. Only two other Florida schools were included in the nation's top 50 public high schools: Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy in Broward County, ranked 41, and Westshore Junior/Senior High School in Brevard County, ranked 43.

Flagler County high schools show marked improvement

Flagler County high schools improved on both the state and national levels compared to last year.

Flagler-Palm Coast High School placed 300 in the state ranking compared to 344 last year, and 5,739 in the national ranking, compared to 6,526 last year.

Matanzas High School placed 302 in the state ranking compared to 318 last year, and 5,751 in the national ranking, compared to 6,202 last year.

The county's iFlagler-Virtual Franchise also ranked this year with 498 statewide and 11,839 nationally.

"The administration, faculty and staff of Flagler Schools continue to prioritize the success of all of our students," Don Foley, Flagler Schools communications coordinator, wrote in an email. "As we continue to climb higher with each passing academic year, our accomplishments are a true testament to the dedication our district has in moving Flagler Forward."

Where do Volusia County high schools stand?

All of Volusia County's high schools appeared in both the state and national rankings.

While Spruce Creek High School dropped slightly compared to last year, it still ranked in the top third of public Florida high schools this year, the only Volusia school to do so.

Deltona High School saw the largest increase in state rankings, moving from 419 last year to 321. Its national ranking went from 8,915 to 6,192.

Mainland High School saw an increase in its state rankings, up 10 points from last year, while its national ranking went from 7,423 to 6,985.

New Smyrna Beach High School ranked the same as last year with 270; its national ranking went from 5,064 to 4,978.

Volusia Virtual Instruction Program improved its national ranking over last year, from 13,261-17,680 to 13,242-17,655.

The rest of the high schools dropped in both state and national rankings compared to last year.

• Spruce Creek High School placed 146 in the state ranking and 2,387 in the national ranking.
• New Smyrna Beach High School placed 270 in the state ranking and 4,978 in the national ranking.
• Seabreeze High School placed 313 in the state ranking and 5,974 in the national ranking.
• DeLand High School placed 317 in the state ranking and 6,094 in the national ranking.
• Deltona High School placed 321 in the state ranking and 6,192 in the national ranking.
• Atlantic High School placed 346 in the state ranking and 6,657 in the national ranking.
• Mainland High School placed 355 in the state ranking and 6,985 in the national ranking.
• T. Dewitt Taylor Middle-High School placed 376 in the state ranking and 7,765 in the national ranking.
• University High School placed 394 in the state ranking and 8,196 in the national ranking.
• Volusia Online Learning-FLVS (Franchise) placed 397 in the state ranking and 8,323 in the national ranking.
• Pine Ridge High School placed 453 in the state ranking and 10,046 in the national ranking.
• Volusia Virtual Instruction Program placed 537-647 in the state ranking and 13,242-17,655 in the national ranking.

Best high schools in Florida in 2024

In a breakdown by state, Florida took fifth place behind Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland.

Florida had 52 schools ranked in the top 5% nationally, 116 schools ranked in the top 10% nationally, and 242 schools ranked in the top 25% nationally.

U.S. News & Reports ranked a total of 647 public high schools in Florida. The News-Journal looked at the top third of those schools to see which counties had the highest number of top-rated public high schools.

Of the top third, or 215 schools, Miami-Dade County, Broward County and Palm Beach County had the most highly rated public high schools this year.
