Writing a biography can be a fun challenge, where you are sharing the story of someone’s life with readers. You may need to write a biography for a class or decide to write one as a personal project. Once you have identified the subject of the biography, do your research so you know as much about them as possible. Then, dive into the writing of the biography and revising it until it is at its finest.

Researching Your Subject

Step 1 Ask the subject for permission to write the biography.

  • If the subject does not give you permission to write the biography, you may want to choose a different subject. If you decide to publish the biography without the subject’s permission, you may be susceptible to legal action by the subject.
  • If the subject is no longer alive, you obviously do not need to ask permission to write about them.

Step 2 Look for primary sources about the subject.

  • You may create research questions to help focus your research of the subject, such as, What do I find interesting about the subject? Why is this subject important to readers? What can I say that is new about the subject? What would I like to learn more about?

Step 3 Conduct interviews with the subject and those close to them.

  • For in person interviews, record them with a tape recorder or a voice recorder on your computer or phone.
  • You may need to interview the subject and others several times to get the material you need.

Step 4 Visit locations that are important to the subject.

  • You may also want to visit areas where the subject made a major decision or breakthrough in their life. Being physically in the area can give you a sense of how the subject might have felt and help you write their experiences more effectively.

Step 5 Study the time and place of the subject’s life.

  • When researching the time period ask yourself: What were the social norms of that time? What was going on economically and politically? How did the social and political climate affect the subject?

Step 6 Make a timeline...

  • You may also include historical events or moments that affected the subject on the timeline. For example, maybe there was a conflict or civil war that happened during the person’s life that affected their life.

Writing the Biography

Step 1 Go for a chronological structure.

  • You may end up focusing on particular areas of the person’s life. If you do this, work through a particular period in the person’s life chronologically.

Step 2 Create a thesis for the biography.

  • For example, you may have a thesis statement about focusing on how the person impacted the civil rights movement in America in the 1970s. You can then make sure all your content relates back to this thesis.

Step 3 Use flashbacks....

  • Flashbacks should feel as detailed and real as present day scenes. Use your research notes and interviews with the subject to get a good sense of their past for the flashbacks.
  • For example, you may jump from the person’s death in the present to a flashback to their favorite childhood memory.

Step 4 Focus on major events and milestones.

  • For example, you may focus on the person’s accomplishments in the civil rights movement. You may write a whole section about their contributions and participation in major civil rights marches in their hometown.

Step 5 Identify a major theme or pattern in the person’s life.

  • For example, you may notice that the person’s life is patterned with moments of adversity, where the person worked hard and fought against larger forces. You can then use the theme of overcoming adversity in the biography.

Step 6 Include your own opinions and thoughts about the person.

  • For example, you may note how you see parallels in the person’s life during the civil rights movement with your own interests in social justice. You may also commend the person for their hard work and positive impact on society.

Polishing the Biography

Step 1 Show the biography to others for feedback.

  • Revise the biography based on feedback from others. Do not be afraid to cut or edit down the biography to suit the needs of your readers.

Step 2 Proofread the biography.

  • Having a biography riddled with spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors can turn off your readers and result in a poor grade if you are handing in the text for a class.

Step 3 Cite all sources...

  • If the biography is for a class, use MLA , APA , or Chicago Style citations based on the preferences of your instructor.

Definition of biography

Did you know.

So You've Been Asked to Submit a Biography

In a library, the word biography refers both to a kind of book and to a section where books of that kind are found. Each biography tells the story of a real person's life. A biography may be about someone who lived long ago, recently, or even someone who is still living, though in the last case it must necessarily be incomplete. The term autobiography refers to a biography written by the person it's about. Autobiographies are of course also necessarily incomplete.

Sometimes biographies are significantly shorter than a book—something anyone who's been asked to submit a biography for, say, a conference or a community newsletter will be glad to know. Often the word in these contexts is shortened to bio , a term that can be both a synonym of biography and a term for what is actually a biographical sketch: a brief description of a person's life. These kinds of biographies—bios—vary, but many times they are only a few sentences long. Looking at bios that have been used in the same context can be a useful guide in determining what to put in your own.

Taylor Swift is now a class at a Florida university. What will students learn?

  • Howard Cohen Miami Herald (TNS)

A University of Miami dean’s own homework assignment last year — learn all you can about Taylor Swift’s songs as fast as you can — has led to one of the coming fall semester’s hottest classes on the Coral Gables campus.

Students were more than ready for it. The UM’s “Mastermind Taylor Swift Brand” strategic communication class filled up at a pace almost as fast as tickets sold out last August for the superstar’s three South Florida concerts in October 2024. Those shows open the second U.S. leg of Swift’s Eras Tour at Miami Gardens’ Hard Rock Stadium.

When registration opened earlier this month at UM for the 150-capacity class that’s open to all majors and begins Aug. 20, all seats filled within four days. The school raised the cap to 175. There is now a waiting list for STC 290. UM may add more seats for the Tuesday-Thursday 75-minute class.

How a UM Swift class was born

For Alyse Lancaster, UM’s vice dean for academic affairs in the School of Communication, that “Mastermind Taylor Swift Brand” class she formulated and will teach is a family affair.

The class is happening because her daughter Gabi planted the idea. And her son Sydney, a sophomore at the University of Florida majoring in interior design, designed the class’s promotional poster that UM students have seen around campus since March.

“Taylor Swift has been a staple in my house since my now-17-year-old daughter was 4 years old,” Lancaster told the Miami Herald in an email interview. “But it wasn’t until we were able to purchase pre-sale tickets for the Eras Tour concert that things changed on my end. My daughter told me that I needed to learn all of the songs on the Eras Tour set list, plus most of Taylor’s other songs — ‘because you never know what the two surprise songs she will perform at the concert’ and I need to be ready.”

Gabi made her mom a playlist. Lancaster listened intently.

Don’t blame me, love made me crazy/If it doesn’t, you ain’t doin’ it right blasting on Lancaster’s exercise walks.

And you call me up again just to break me like a promise/So casually cruel in the name of being honest, Taylor’s dig at ex-beau Jake Gyllenhaal, coming from Lancaster’s car stereo on those drives to and from campus in Miami’s infernal traffic jams.

All this cramming of Swift’s music gave the educator plenty of contemplative and creative time.

“Then she and I went to see the Eras Tour movie and while watching this incredible woman perform for 3.5 hours straight, through nine eras of her music, interacting with her over-the-moon-excited, completely engaged audience, I finally understood what the big deal is,” Lancaster said.

On one of those walks, the idea for the class hit Lancaster like an immediate, enchanted revelation, much like words and music come to Swift. She knew she had to teach a communication strategy class at UM built around Swift’s brand.

Last fall, the University of Miami’s School of Law had an adjunct professor teach a seven-week intensive class called “Intellectual Property Law Through the Lens of Taylor Swift.”

The University of Florida’s one-credit discussion-based spring 2024 class, “ Musical Storytelling With Taylor Swift and Other Iconic Female Artists,” filled its 15 spots in 10 seconds when early registration opened last fall, the campus newspaper, The Independent Florida Alligator reported.

In the last year, Stanford University has offered “All Too Well (Ten Week Version),” a course analyzing Swift’s 10-minute masterpiece, “All Too Well” and “The Last Great American Songwriter: Storytelling With Taylor Swift Through the Eras.”

Harvard’s Department of English opened its “ Taylor Swift and Her World ” course this spring, promising to cover “illicit affairs and hoaxes” and “champagne problems and incomplete closure.”

Berklee College of Music in Boston offers a “Songs of Taylor Swift” class with a focus on the performer’s music composition and lyrics, The Boston Globe reported.

In addition to Lancaster’s coming UM class, Arizona State University, Brigham Young University, Houston’s Rice University, the University of Delaware and the University of California, Berkeley all plan Swift-inspired courses in 2024, according to Best Colleges.

“I typically teach courses in advertising strategy development and social media strategies,” Lancaster said. “These classes focus on brand-building, identifying and communicating with the desired target audience, building brand loyalty, and using social media to build a long-lasting relationship between the brand and its loyal audience. And it occurred to me that Taylor Swift has successfully built a billion-dollar brand with a multicultural, multi-generational, global audience of millions of loyal fans.

“So why not use Taylor Swift’s success and business prowess as the foundation for teaching students about brand-building, audience-building, and the importance of communication in achieving those relationships? And just like that, the class was born,” Lancaster said.

What students will learn

Students who managed to secure a seat for UM’s STC 290 in the fall will learn about the marketing and communication strategies Swift has used to build her billion-dollar brand via “the most diverse and loyal group of fans many of us have ever seen,” Lancaster said.

Take Emma Craig, a junior majoring in biomedical engineering at UM. “It’s going to be a ‘Cruel Summer’ waiting until fall for the new Taylor Swift class coming to UM,” the student told The Miami Hurricane campus paper in anticipation of registration for the course.

“For “Mastermind,” the class title borrowed from one of Swift’s “Midnights” tracks, Lancaster’s lectures aim to teach students how to use promotional, persuasive and strategic communication to build a connection with a target audience, and how to get that audience invested in the brand, Lancaster said as she builds her syllabus. School of Communication issues like freedom of expression, the right to privacy for public figures, and the legal limits of using artificial intelligence to alter images are also on the course agenda.

“These are skills students can use not only in the industry, but also in building their own personal brands after graduation,” Lancaster said.

Swift’s own education path

For Swift, 34, that brand-building began inside a classroom in Hendersonville, Tennessee, when she was a high school freshman in a math class, she told the Miami Herald in an interview published in January 2008, just a month after she turned 18.

While her peers listened to the teacher lecture about algebra a few years earlier, Swift said she scribbled the lyrics to her first two hits, “Tim McGraw” and “Teardrops on My Guitar,” in her notebook and sneaked out of class to record voice memos into her telephone.

At 17, signed to her first label, Swift already directed nearly every aspect of her career, from the images on her album covers and press photos, to the songs’ sequencing on her albums. Swift said nothing was released to the marketplace that she hadn’t approved.

“When teachers conducted random notebook checks, they’d be freaked out — but they learned to deal with me,” Swift mused in that long-ago interview.

Knowledge retention

Taylor Swift, Lancaster says, is “in essence, a phenomenon who truly understands many of the important constructs we cover in higher education, including persuasive communication, branding, storytelling, intellectual property, and the power of music.”

One reason universities like UM and UF have taken to teaching Swift, aside from the Eras-like sellout registrations for classes, is they give professors an opportunity to teach concepts that students may actually remember after graduation.

“If students can connect the information they learn to something that’s of great interest to them, they will not only remember that information, but they will be reminded of it whenever the topic of interest comes up. Using Taylor Swift as the impetus for teaching important concepts increases attention, learning, and retention. And plus, it makes learning fun,” Lancaster said.

“I’ve never been more excited to teach a class than I am to teach this one!”

Miami Herald staff writer Howard Cohen teaches a digital writing class at the University of Miami and uses examples from Taylor Swift’s songwriting in lectures.

My Brother Left His Wife for a Much Younger Woman. I Can’t Believe What She Wants Me to Do Now.

His ex-wife was family his new wife is definitely not..

Care and Feeding is Slate’s parenting advice column.  Have a question for Care and Feeding?  Submit it here .

Dear Care and Feeding,

My ex-sister-in-law, “Jan,” and I have known each other 30 years. We went through all the big milestones together (our kids are less than six months apart in age). We work in similar fields. And she was the one with me when I had to identify my husband’s body after a car crash.

I was upset when my brother chose to have an affair, get a divorce, and marry the woman he had been having the affair with. It was a bad time for everyone, particularly my niece, but we all got through it. It has been five years. I still routinely travel with Jan and our daughters. My new sister-in-law, “Susan,” has an issue with this.

Susan has never taken me up on any of my offers to visit or for us to try and do our own thing, but she does make bitter comments about my closeness with Jan—and in front of my niece. Susan and I are far apart in age and political beliefs, so it is a struggle. My brother claims I need to make more of an effort. I don’t know what more I can do. I am polite, I am friendly, and I damn sure do not bring up how their relationship began. I honestly think my sister-in-law does not want to be close to me—she just hates the fact I am still close to Jan. How do I handle this?

—Target of Sister-in-Law’s Ire

Dear Target,

Good grief! You are allowed to maintain any relationship you want with any family member who’s important to you. You’re also allowed to exercise chilly civility with any family member who is being an absolute pill. I commend you for remaining close with Jan, and I absolve you from making any more friendly overtures to your husband’s new, younger wife. She had her chance! If she wants to build a real connection with you, she’s got your phone number.

As for the question of Susan’s bitter comments within your niece’s hearing: I don’t know how old your niece is, but your letter hints that she’s probably not a very small child. If I’m wrong and she’s young, feel free to remind your brother that you don’t need his wife shit-talking you in front of her for the crime of continuing to be friends with the woman who was there for you when your husband died. But if, as I suspect, she’s a teenager or older, she likely already has her own feelings about her stepmom—and I’d bet Susan’s catty remarks only make her like you more.

My 21-year-old daughter recently had a baby because her birth control failed. Long story short, she’s pro-life, and now we have a wonderful baby girl. The problem is, the father of the child is immature and completely indifferent to any help my daughter needs. He’s had almost no contact with either of them, which means I’ve been the de facto dad, going with Mom to doctors and filling in frequently.

I’m not sure if I’m enabling my daughter to rely on me or just being supportive? She has postpartum anxiety, which makes it really difficult for her to do things on her own. I’m encouraging her to get therapy for this issue, but in the meantime, I feel that it’s really important I support her and the baby. My husband disagrees and thinks she should do it on her own so she’s prepared for reality. Who’s right?

—Grandma or Baby Daddy?

Dear Grandma,

You are right. Your daughter needs all the help and support you can give her, and so does the tiny baby to whom she gave birth so recently that she’s still suffering postpartum effects. Now is not the time for you to be demanding that your daughter build some grit or whatever. That shit can wait. Embrace your role as the grandmother who’s pitching in and establishing a foothold in both your granddaughter’s new life and your daughter’s new experience as a parent. Encourage your husband to do so as well.

However! You’ll notice I’m not reiterating your self-identification as the “de facto dad.” I sense that you were sort of kidding, and I certainly hope you’re not saying this in front of your daughter, but for the record: You are not this baby’s father, and I urge you not to refer to yourself that way, even jokingly, even inside your head. You are who you are, a loving grandmother, and that does not make your contribution to this baby’s upbringing any less meaningful. Families get made out of whoever is willing to put in the work and deliver the love. Embrace your role just as hard as you’re embracing your daughter and the new person in your home.

My boyfriend’s mother is emotionally immature and manipulative. She’s held grudges against him for weeks in the past for tiny things. She is impossible to have productive discussions with because all she wants to do is yell, never believing she is wrong. He and I have been dating for multiple years and live together, and I have thankfully never had a reason to get into an altercation with her. But he admitted today that if she and I ever got into an argument, he would take her side if he thought she was right and remain neutral if he thought I was right.

He admits he knows it’s cowardly. I feel genuinely angry and worried. I can’t imagine a future where I would be hung out to dry. He says he is terrified of his mother, but I have never been so disappointed in him. Am I right to feel like this? Is it too presumptive if it hasn’t actually happened yet? She would never agree to therapy because of her culture. Is there anything I can do?

—Troubled in Tennessee

Dear Tennessee,

Those are some big red flags flapping in the breeze, I agree! But also, literally nothing has happened yet. Tell him clearly what you’d need from him to feel supported in the case of some hypothetical future fight, but the answer should not be a simple You must take my side no matter what . Instead, think seriously about what kind of person you want to be connected to, how that person should exhibit his respect for his mother (but not his submission to her), and how you want that person to treat you—his girlfriend, maybe eventually his wife.

When the time comes that there’s an argument—and that time will come—he will know what you expect, and you will soon know whether you can count on him. In the meantime, listen to Queen Abby, to whom we always refer in issues of unpleasant mothers-in-law .

I am the mom of a terrific 8-year-old son, “Harry,” from my first marriage. My current partner and I started dating three years ago. The three of us have lived together for a little over a year. My son and current partner get along great.

Recently, we were incredibly excited to find out that we are expecting a baby together. However, Harry is the least baby-friendly person on earth. He claims babies are at worst annoying and at best boring. We have told him he isn’t wrong, and he is totally entitled to those feelings. He has a baby sibling at his father’s house and he simply doesn’t acknowledge the baby at all. Harry says he will treat the baby at our house the same way.

I have tried not to put pressure on him and tell him it’s OK not to be a baby person. Hey, there are adults who aren’t baby people! Maybe I should say that Harry is autistic and is pretty blunt about his feelings. For example, when other adults ask if he is excited about the baby, he simply says, “No: Babies are loud and boring.” I know I need to let my two kids foster their own relationship in their own time, and maybe Harry will eventually come around, but I want my kids to be close, and it makes me sad they may never be.

I also worry our family will feel disjointed with me or my partner tending to the baby and the other tending to Harry. Lastly, I worry that, as I was the birthing and nursing partner, Harry will pull away from me. We’ve always been crazy close—I was a single mom for a long time—and the thought of not being as close because of a choice I made is really upsetting. Is there something more I should do to foster their relationship? Do I just keep letting Harry do his thing and keep up the no-pressure approach?

—The Trouble With Harry

Dear Trouble,

First of all, congratulations on the news of your new baby! I admire how committed you are to wanting to maintain your connection to Harry and how concerned you are that he forge a relationship with the baby. While there are aspects of your situation that are somewhat unique, I do think it might help you to remember that you are not alone. The questions you are asking are versions of ones that have been asked by mothers since time immemorial: How do I make sure my older child loves my newborn just as I do? And how do I make sure my relationship with my older child remains unchanged?

The answer to both of these questions is: You can’t. But please don’t be disheartened by this! Of course a sibling won’t love a new baby the same way his or her parents do, and many siblings have viewed the addition of a new person to the household with just as gimlet an eye as Harry does, even if they maybe didn’t vocalize this quite as clearly. And of course your relationship with an older child evolves when a baby enters the family. It gets richer, weirder, harder, and even more charged. That’s the way it should be!

I think it’s totally fine to let Harry say what he’s going to say about the baby. You’re handling that just right. But you can also reply to him, “When this baby arrives, they will be a member of the family just like you and me and my partner, and they will be important to all of us, even you.” You can see if any of the many books out there about welcoming a new sibling speak to him and his particular opinions about infants. And when the baby does come, you should establish some aspects of the baby’s care—diaper procurement, bottle warming, onesie buttoning—that are included in his list of responsibilities. Harry will find his way into a relationship with this sibling over time; don’t write him off, and don’t preemptively mourn something that hasn’t happened yet.

More Advice From Slate

I’ve been friends with Nicole since childhood. She’s been married to Joe for the past seven years. He has custody of his 13-year-old son from a previous marriage, and he lives with them full time except for every other weekend. Nicole has really taken to being a stepmom. Now I am expecting my first child, and Nicole keeps equating my motherhood with being a stepmom. She keeps trying to give me advice and platitudes about parenthood. Nicole has a lot of experience, but I don’t think our situations are the same. Nicole can be really touchy and temperamental, so while I would love to politely tell her to back off with the mom platitudes, I instead just distance myself. I always thought she would be like an extra aunt to my baby. What can I do?

Won’t be ready to file your taxes on April 15? Here’s what to do

The deadline for filing taxes has consistently been April 15, but if life gets in the way, you don’t need to panic.

Tax Day, When is Tax Day, filing taxes, tax extensions, filing tax extensions, tax season, taxes, tax penalties, April 15, how to file a tax extension, personal finance, financial advice, theGrio.com

In case you weren’t already scrambling, taxes are due on April 15 — which is just a few short days away. As you likely already know, preparing to file your taxes can take a lot of time and effort, meaning getting it out of the way and done will be a huge sigh of relief for many. But if you are finding yourself up against time and falling short, you may need other options.

Even though we file taxes annually, a lot can change over the course of a year. Maybe you bought or sold a house, got married or divorced, or had a baby. Maybe your income increased greatly, or you started a business. Whatever it is, life is going to life, and maybe you need a minute or two for your taxes to catch up.

So if you haven’t gotten it all together in time to file your taxes on April 15, what can you do — and what happens if you do not file your taxes by the 15th? First, the legality of it all: Taxes are due April 15, all the time. The only time that changes is if the 15th falls on a weekend or conflicts with a holiday; then, you typically get until the 17th. Barring those circumstances, April 15 has been the filing deadline since 1955, so the best thing you can do is get those taxes in on time.

However, as stated earlier, life happens. So if you just cannot get your taxes in by or on April 15, here is what you can do:

First, ignore the inclination to do nothing. So many people do this, to the tune of the IRS assessing billions in penalties for tax returns not filed on time. This is not something that you can ignore or get to when you have time. Not filing anything can actually cost you more money than you might eventually owe.

Instead of doing nothing, file for an extension. You can file IRS form 4868 , a no-cost, penalty-free document taxpayers can submit to the IRS if they need more time to file their individual federal tax returns. By filing for an Automatic Extension of Time, you may have an additional six months — or until Oct. 15 — to get your tax return in. That said, the deadline to submit form 4868 remains the same: Tax Day, April 15. If you allow that deadline to pass, so does your chance to get an extension — and any returns filed after April 15 without form 4868 will be considered late and therefore incur a late filing penalty.

Bottom line: It is better to file for an extension than to not file anything and incur penalties. Even as a financial expert who is hyper-aware of tax deadlines and potential liabilities, I have filed form 4868 myself. There was a year when I moved and lost my W2s; I needed time to get settled and ended up going to the Taxpayer Advocate Service to get a copy of my wage and tax transcript (yeah — because adulting). It may not have been fun, but I was able to file for an extension and subsequently file an accurate tax return by Oct. 15.

Now that we’ve covered how to file for an extension, please note a major caveat: An extension to file your taxes is not an extension to pay the taxes you owe. Some people think it is better to wait to file taxes until they have the money to pay the taxes owed, but that is simply not the case.

Taxes can turn into real debt. Typically, interest accrues on your unpaid taxes from the date the return is due until the debt is paid — and depending on how long that takes, that can end up being a lot of money. In fact, the accruing interest could amount to more than you owed to begin with. The late payment penalty is usually one-half of 1% for each month or part of a month the tax remains unpaid, up to 25 percent.

With that in mind, even if you are not ready to file the actual return, if you learn that you actually owe, try to pay as much as possible upfront.

So, if you’re not ready to file your taxes on Monday, don’t panic; most taxpayers can digitally file form 4868 to request an automatic six-month tax filing extension. And note: While you don’t need to give a reason why you are requesting the extension, should your request be denied, the IRS will contact you directly to let you know why.

After filing for an extension, you may feel relief knowing you’ve bought yourself a few extra months, but use that time wisely and don’t forget to get that return in by the Oct.15 deadline. If you miss that extension deadline, there won’t be any additional options, and those fees and penalties will immediately begin to add up.

Happy filing!

Coachella Weekend 1 weather forecast: Storm to hit SoCal, but not Indio

While another spring storm is set to hit Southern California this weekend, bringing rain mostly to the Los Angeles area and parts of the Inland Empire, those who are flocking to the Empire Polo Club in Indio for Weekend 1 of Coachella should be pleasantly surprised. The National Weather Service out of San Diego on Friday is predicting picture-perfect (selfie-perfect?), if breezy, conditions in Indio and across the Coachella Valley Friday through Sunday.

  • Friday: Sunny with highs near 90 degrees. The afternoon will see wind of 5 to 10 mph with some gusts hitting 20 mph.
  • Friday night: Clear with lows around 56 degrees, which should make for good sleeping weather in the car camping area. Northwest winds will be 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
  • Saturday: Sunny and highs near 81 degrees. Wind of 5 to 10 mph expected.
  • Saturday night: Clear with a low around 52 degrees. A west wind of 15 to 25 mph could gust as high as 40 mph.
  • Sunday: Another sunny day, with a high near 75. Wind of 10 to 15 mph could increase to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, gusting to up to 30 mph.
  • Sunday night: Mostly clear and breezy, with a low around 52 degrees.

Coachella special guest predictions (of the non-Taylor Swift variety)

The official Coachella lineup is thinner this year than recent festivals, but does that mean there's more opportunity for special guests? Read about why The Desert Sun staff is keeping their eyes peeled for Anitta, Sia, Kali Uchis, Megan Thee Stallion, The Weeknd, Leon Bridges, PinkPantheress and Blake Shelton .

Taylor Swift at Coachella? Here's why she might show up in Indio

Snow touching down in sunny Indio is as rare as crossing paths with Taylor Swift, but for Coachellagoers, the rumors are spiraling if the star will make an appearance to support her friend and "Snow On the Beach" collaborator Lana Del Rey (headlining Friday's show). Her opening act in South America, Australia and Singapore, Sabrina Carpenter, also has a set at Coachella on Friday. On Saturday, Swift's friend and co-producer Jack Antonoff is playing with the Bleachers fresh off a new album release. The three acts will also repeat next week, so be on the lookout for Taylor and Travis.

— Bryan West, the USA TODAY Network's Taylor Swift reporter

It's going to be a (Vampire) Weekend 1. What about Weekend 2?

Vampire Weekend was added to the Coachella lineup on Tuesday, thrilling Indie rock fans and setting off furious debate about whether or not they will play Weekend 2, largely regarded as the "music lovers'" weekend (as opposed to Weekend 1's reputation as the influencer weekend). History suggests it's anybody's guess. Arcade Fire was similarly added to the 2022 lineup and only played Weekend 1. Blink-182 was added last-minute in 2023 for Weekend 1, and then got a huge upgrade to headliner Weekend 2 when Frank Ocean controversially bowed out .

Vampire Weekend, which was formed in 2006 in New York City, is  no stranger to Coachella , Desert Sun Features Editor Niki Kottmann writes. The group played the festival in 2008, 2010 and then again in 2013. Check them out Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Outdoor Theatre.

Car camping at Coachella? How to get there, rules, tips, silent disco

Car camping is the most classic way to experience a weekend at Coachella. Make friends. Do fun activities (silent disco, anyone?). Goldenvoice has perfected the experience over the years, and campers will be happy to know that the amenities are plentiful: Food vendors, free water refill stations, free WiFi, general stores where you can purchase basic necessities including ice, phone charging stations, restrooms and showers and even a free supermarket shuttle, should you run out of provisions.

First, let's get you there. GPS is fickle so here are some directions as provided by Goldenvoice:

  • Day parking: From all directions, approach the Empire Polo Club and follow signs and traffic personnel.
  • Preferred parking: From eastbound Interstate10, exit at Monroe Street and travel south. Take a right on Avenue 49 and a left into Lot 1. Don’t attempt to approach north on Monroe.
  • Car camping/toll booths (Lot 13): From Eastbound Interstate 10, exit at Jefferson Street and continue to Indio Boulevard. Take a right at Jefferson Street and follow signs and traffic personnel to check-in lanes.
  • Lake Eldorado: From Eastbound Interstate 10, exit at Jefferson Street and continue to Indio Boulevard. Take a right at Jefferson Street. Then take a left at Avenue 50 and a right at Madison Street. Follow signs to Lake Eldorado on left.
  • Companion camping parking and tent camping parking (Lot 2A): From Eastbound Interstate 10, exit at Jefferson Street and continue to Indio Boulevard. Take a right at Jefferson Street and then a left at Avenue 50. Follow signs to Lot 2A on left

Some car camping rules , again from Goldenvoice:

  • A festival pass is required for entry into the campground
  • You must be 18 or older (or accompanied by an adult) to enter the campground
  • The campground opened at 9 a.m. on Thursday and will close Monday at 10 a.m.
  • All car camping sites are 30 feet by 10 feet
  • Unlimited friends/tents per site
  • One vehicle per site allowed, and required
  • A vehicle must be a passenger car, truck or van. RVs and motorhomes (or any vehicle with running water or toilets) are not allowed, nor are motorcycles, buses or U-Haul trucks.
  • Sites assigned in order of arrival
  • Each site also includes one overnight parking space in an adjacent lot to leave a car for the weekend
  • Campers and cars will be searched at check in
  • Noise curfew starts at 1:30 a.m.

What is Coachella's bag policy?

Backpacks and bags are allowed, and they don't have to be clear but they need to be 18 inches x 13 inches x 8.5 inches or smaller. The trick is in what you can bring inside. The full list is long but here are a few key items that are allowed, and those that aren't.

Allowed: Cameras (non-professional), eye drops, hydration packs, binoculars, breast pumps, chapstick, face masks, GoPros, hand sanitizer, gum, inhalers, lighters, makeup, phone chargers, empty reusable water bottles, water misters.

Not allowed: Aerosol products, air horns, blankets, chairs, coolers, drones, discriminative or appropriative items, divisive or appropriative symbols, flags, fliers, glass bottles, glow sticks, illegal drugs and paraphernalia, laser pointers, selfie sticks, tripods, umbrellas, walkie talkies.

From TikTok to Coachella: 5 viral acts to know

Love it or hate it, TikTok has become an integral part of the music industry, writes Desert Sun reporter Ani Gasparyan. So it should come as no surprise that several artists who gained success on the popular social media platform will be taking the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this year.

Check out Gasparyan's story about TikTok stars Kenya Grace, Thuy, YG Marley, Jungle and Saint Levant , all of whom are slated to play this weekend.

3 Coachella artists likely to get political as Ukraine, Israel-Hamas wars continue

Speaking of Saint Levant, he's one three acts USA TODAY California elections fellow Kathryn Palmer has picked to make a political statement at Coachella.

Palmer writes that music and politics have always had an intertwined relationship, as evidenced when more than 80 performers pulled out of the South by Southwest festival in Austin in March to protest several defense contracting companies participating in the event, and its "super sponsor," the U.S. Army. Though there have not been any high-profile disputes among artists and Coachella organizers similar to that in Austin, the festival is by no means insulated from the Israel-Hamas war or the war in Ukraine.

Travis kelce sucks down beer after receiving univ. of cincinnati diploma, travis kelce surprised with uc diploma celebrates with epic beer chug.

Travis Kelce reached yet another life milestone on Thursday night, receiving his college diploma from the Univ. of Cincinnati, and in true Kelce fashion, he celebrated by -- you guessed it -- sucking down a beer!!

The Kansas City Chiefs star and his big brother, Jason , were at their old stomping grounds to film a live episode of their 'New Heights' podcast ... and when it came time to put a bow on the festivities, officials at their alma mater surprised them with an impromptu commencement ceremony.

Both dudes had previously graduated from the school ... but neither got to walk across the stage to snatch their diplomas -- so the moment was pretty special for the two.

And, just before Travis got ahold of his official paperwork ... he just had to chug a brew to memorialize the occasion -- before he spiked the can right on the stage.

More fun, of course, was had throughout the night ... including when the brothers played a "Name That Tune" game with fans in attendance. The band began playing Taylor Swift 's familiar "Shake It Off" notes ... and once Travis caught the melody, he began dancing his tail off to the song.

One of the contestants eventually correctly guessed it was Swift's ditty -- prompting Travis to scream into the mic, "One of my favorites right there, ladies and gentlemen. All right, now!"

The guys were ultimately joined by Joe Burrow and Orlando Brown once they sat down to film the pod ... and, yes, a little Chiefs-Bengals smack talk did happen.

Doesn't seem Swift was there for any of the festivities ... but it sure looks like Travis found a way to have fun nonetheless -- something the tight end always appears to do !!
