Apple Event 2023: Today Is the Expected iPhone 15 Reveal and More

Today, we could see the iPhone 15, Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and, maybe, an iPhone 15 Ultra announced.

Invitation for the Apple September iPhone 15 event

Apple sent out invites for a Sept. 12 event. The tagline is "Wonderlust."

Today is  Apple's Wonderlust event , and we expect to see the rumored iPhone 15 and new Apple Watches announced. You can  watch Apple's Wonderlust event stream  starting at 10 a.m. PDT/1 p.m. EDT. This will be the first event since Apple unveiled the Vision Pro at WWDC earlier this summer. The annual fall iPhone event has become a cultural touch point heralding the end of summer, right up there with pumpkin spice.

For months, a seemingly endless flow of iPhone 15 rumors have circulated online. Some hint at a rather straightforward round of year-over-year upgrades, while others point to the possibility of a rebranded larger Pro model called the iPhone 15 Ultra . As the anticipation builds, here's everything you can expect from today's Apple's fall event.

Wanderlust or wonderlust?

The event's invite is characteristically enigmatic, showing an Apple logo made up of tiny, dustlike particles. The logo has grooves carved out of it, a bit like the forms you see on windswept sand dunes.

The tagline, "Wonderlust," is of course a play on the word " wanderlust," which means a strong longing for or impulse toward wandering . Does wonderlust mean a strong longing for or impulse toward wondering? Like everyone else, we're trying to read something into the invite  and wondering what it has to do with Apple's upcoming announcements. Could the grooved cutouts in the logo refer to a less boxy iPhone design? Could the particles refer to improved cameras capable of capturing more detail? Could the colors -- metallic shades of gray, blue and even gold -- be a reference to the colors of the new iPhone or Apple Watch?

Or is this all just Apple acknowledging the fleeting nature of existence? No idea. But I expect the iPhone 15 Pro will be the headliner.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus

As in the iPhone 14 series, there will likely be four models in the new iPhone lineup: the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who has a solid record when covering Apple leaks, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will basically be a repackaged iPhone 14 Pro without the telephoto camera or stainless steel body.

The new phones would inherit a 48-megapixel main camera and the A16 chip from the 14 Pros. On the outside, the two phones will trade their display notches for the Dynamic Island cutout that also debuted on the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

iPhone 14 family

Apple brought the Plus model back for last year's iPhone 14 series. It replaced the spot previously reserved for the iPhone Mini model.

Despite the addition of the Dynamic Island, don't expect any other changes to the screen. Display analyst Ross Young said in a September 2022 post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he isn't expecting base iPhone 15 models to get a high refresh rate like Apple's Pro iPhones.

And according to a May report by ChargerLab, a battery and charging specialist website with a steady track record for rumors, all four iPhone 15 models will support 15-watt wireless charging using the Qi2 open standard announced earlier this year . If this turns out to be true, it could mean the iPhone 15 would open up a whole new world of wireless charging devices that don't necessarily need to be licensed Apple MagSafe accessories.

  • iPhone 15 Pro Hands-On: Titanium Frame, 5x Zoom Camera
  • Apple Watch Series 9 First Look: Double Tap, Faster Performance

But the biggest change expected for all four iPhones will be the shift away from the Lightning connector. Likely driven by pressure from the European Union, which passed legislation adopting USB-C as a common charging standard , the iPhone 15 series will have a USB-C port instead of a Lighting port. The last time Apple switched the iPhone's power port was in 2012, when it debuted the Lighting port on the iPhone 5, which spelled the end of the wide 30-pin iPod connector that was previously used.

It's a bit hazy how exactly Apple will handle this, like whether USB-C will be on all new iPhones globally or just in the EU. But it's highly likely that all new iPhone models will be sold with a USB-C port for the foreseeable future.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro camera lenses

The lenses on the iPhone 14 Pro Max stick out quite a bit. Apple might put its next telephoto lens inside the body of the iPhone 15 Pro Max via a periscope assembly.

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max

Of everything Apple's expected to announce, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max could have the biggest changes. According to  Bloomberg's Gurman, stainless steel is gone, and instead the Pro model's frame will be made from titanium. The shift in materials could help reduce the overall weight of each phone, which is hefty even without a case.

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will likely get a new chip called A17 that features a supertiny, 3-nanometer processor, Apple's smallest silicon to date. Around the front, the two phones will likely have thinner display bezels.

The Xperia 1 V's camera bump

A close-up of the Sony Xperia 1 V's camera bump. The bottom lens is actually a mirror that allows the periscope lens that's mounted horizontally in the body to take photos.

The Pro models' biggest change will be the USB-C port, which in a break from the regular 15 and 15 Plus could support faster data speeds for things like transferring files and ProRes video files .

The iPhone 15 Pro Max may get a new 6x optical telephoto camera. Ming-Chi Kuo, a noted Apple analyst with TF International Securities,  predicts the iPhone 15 Pro Max will have a horizontal mounted periscope lens and camera unit inside the phone's body, similar to ones in the Pixel 7 Pro, Galaxy S23 Ultra and Sony Xperia 1 V.

Doubling the native optical zoom from 3x to 6x should enable you to capture zoomed-in photos with better detail, resolution and dynamic range compared with the 6x digital zoom on a current iPhone 14 Pro.

a hand holding a phone

The HTC U12 had no physical button. Instead there were nubs where buttons would normally go that were touch sensitive. Apple is rumored to be doing the same on its iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

Kuo's report also hints at both Pro models having solid-state volume and power buttons, which would further differentiate them from the regular 15 and 15 Plus. The buttons wouldn't be mechanical and would be more akin to the touch sensitive area that debuted on the iPhone 7 and acts like a "home button" thanks to some clever haptic feedback. Back in 2018, the HTC U12 had solid-state buttons instead of mechanical ones; however, the experience using them wasn't great.

There are a couple of rumors that have been circulating despite being a bit dated or unlikely. The first is that the iPhone 15 Pro Max may be rebranded as the iPhone 15 Ultra. Bloomberg's Gurman mentioned the possibility nearly a year ago, but that should be taken with a grain of salt since more recently Gurman hasn't brought it up.

Another up-in-the-air rumor comes by the way of MacRumors, which found code in a beta version of iOS 17 that describes functionality for an action button like the one on the Apple Watch Ultra. Such a hardware addition would be a first for Apple, and the iPhone's action button would be for more-phone-oriented tasks like shortcuts or triggering the camera shutter. We'll have to wait until the 12th to find out.

Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2

Apple Watch Ultra vs Series 8

Apple Watch Ultra (left) vs. 41mm Apple Watch Series 8.

In a less ambitious update, it seems the next regular Apple Watch will likely be a relatively modest year-over-year iteration of the Apple Watch Series 8. The Series 9 could come in a new color. As reported  by MacRumors, based on a post by X/Twitter user ShrimpApplePro, the Apple Watch Series 9 might come in a new pink color.

The Series 9 will likely be powered by a new S9 chip, which Bloomberg's Gurman, posting to his Power On Discord channel back in May, described as bringing improvements to performance and efficiency. That's another way of saying the battery life might be better.

The Apple Watch Ultra could see a second-generation version. The rugged watch debuted last year, and a new version could bring a faster chip and come in a black titanium finish, according to an X/Twitter post by ShrimpApplePro. A black version of the Ultra could look amazing!

All right, let's talk about everything else.

Potpourri and wrap-up

Apple Vision Pro on display during WWDC at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California

Will the Vision Pro make an appearance at Apple's Sept. 12 event?

The AirPods case could see a new version with a USB-C connector . iOS 17 and WatchOS 10 will likely get an official release date. And I can't imagine that Apple would pass up a chance to update everyone on its Vision Pro headset that was announced in June at WWDC.

Obviously, until Tim Cook and crew walk onto that stage in the Steve Jobs Theater and make their announcements, we won't know anything for certain.

Apple iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max

iPhone 15 Pro Max render based on leaked information by Hanstsaiz

The main focus of Apple’s September 2023 event will be on the all-new iPhone 15 Series of devices, including the core iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Plus, Pro, and Pro Max — all of which are set to now feature USB-C ports as standard.

The all-new port might have a few tricks up its sleeve however, as a recent leak seems to showcase a mystery chip that could serve as a verification step for Apple's Made for iPhone (MFi) certification. Reportedly, USB-C cables lacking this certification could be limited in charge times and data speed.

However, it could also point to lightning-fast Thunderbolt/USB4 tech inclusion and have something to do with the rumors that iPhone 15 will feature vastly improved 35W charge speeds . Either way, Apple seems to want to claim sole ownership of the best iPhone 15 charging and data speeds.

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are expected to make use of Apple’s A16 Bionic chip, the same found in iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. Both devices are also said to feature an upgraded 48MP main camera, Super Retina XDR OLED displays, and up to 512GB of storage.

The two core options differ mostly in screen size and battery capacity with the iPhone 15 featuring a 60Hz, 6.1-inch panel with a 3,877mAh battery and the iPhone 15 Plus housing a 60Hz, 6.7-inch screen and a 4,912mAh battery.

On the other hand, iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to make use of Apple’s A17 Bionic chip , the company’s first 3nm processor. Not only will this bring more performance to Apple’s flagship phones, but also better efficiency, squeezing the most out of the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max’s expanded 3,650mAh and 4,852mAh battery capacities.

While the iPhone 15 Pro Max model will reportedly feature an upgraded telephoto (now periscope) lens (ditching the digital zoom of old for a variable optical zoom), both Pro models will apparently enjoy a new titanium casing with curved edges, up to 1TB of storage, and 120Hz displays at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches in size.

Apple Watch Series 9

Apple Watch Series 8 substituting Apple Watch Series 9

The fact we’ve heard very little about what to expect from the Apple Watch Series 9 might give you an indication of what to expect in terms of its latest refresh.

A recent roadmap laid out by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicates that Apple has been hard at work on two Apple Watch Series 9 models for release this year — likely the 41mm and 45mm aluminum and stainless steel designs of old. When it comes to color options, the aluminum model will reportedly be available in Midnight, Starlight, Silver, (PRODUCT) RED, and Pink. The stainless steel model will be available in three colors: Gold, Graphite, and Silver.

Much of what was the Apple Watch Series 8 will carry over, though Apple has reportedly refreshed the watch’s internals with a more powerful S9 chip . The new chipset will be based on Apple’s A15 Bionic, bringing better performance and battery life to the table just in time to make the most of the upcoming watchOS 10 release.

  • Apple Watch Series 9 rumors

Apple Watch Ultra substituting Apple Watch Ultra 2

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 , a follow-up to the awesome Apple Watch Ultra , is also touted to make an appearance, appearing on the same roadmap as the Apple Watch Series 9 and similarly earmarked for a 2023 release.

Information about what to expect from the second generation of Apple’s smartwatch is scarce, but it’s likely to receive the same processor upgrade as the Apple Watch Series 9 — resulting in the same S9 chipset performance and efficiency boost.

The next big hardware change we’re likely to notice when it comes to the Apple Watch Ultra’s design will be when Apple begins outfitting the smartwatch with its own in-house micro-LED displays . But don’t expect to see that change until at least 2025.

However, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 will feature changes you won’t automatically notice by way of 3D-printed titanium components that cut the cost of manufacturing the device and reduce its weight. Will the reduced production costs translate into more affordable pricing for Apple’s premium wearable? That remains to be seen.

  • Apple Watch Ultra 2 rumors

Apple September 2023 event: What else could we see?

There’s always room for “One more thing…” at an Apple event, and while Apple Park is known to spring more leaks than a TENA commercial, the potential for a surprise reveal still exists. Here are some of our picks for outside chances heading to Apple’s September 2023 event:

Apple iPad Mini (Gen 7)

Apple iPad Mini 6 substituting Apple iPad 7

A recent leak by tipster ShrimpApplePro indicates that at least one iPad could be set to steal some of the keynote spotlight — likely the iPad Mini 7 .

However, while the tipster feels its appearance is a possibility, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman doesn't share the same enthusiasm. In a January issue of his Power On newsletter, Gurman stated that he believes Apple is unlikely to release any significant iPad upgrades this year.

This would also line up with a tweet from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo , who believes that the next iPad mini refresh will begin mass production in Q1 of 2024.

The last iPad Mini launched in September 2021, running on Apple’s A15 Bionic chip and 4GB of RAM. While the leak doesn’t go into any further details about what to expect, we can assume Apple would at the very least have an upgrade to the chipset in mind.

Though, before anybody starts dreaming of an M2 iPad Mini, we’d expect an upgrade to the A16 Bionic processor at most.

  • iPad mini 7 rumors

Whether you’re a fan of the smartphones, smartwatches, or software that Apple produces, September’s showcase will have something for everyone — and see Apple sign off on a massively important and successful 2023. Make sure to check back often for the latest updates on Apple’s plans and everything we know about its upcoming additions.

Apple’s September iPhone event: Date, time, and what will launch

Karen Haslam

Apple will take the wraps off the new iPhone 15 range at an event on September 12, 2023. At the same time, we will likely see a new Apple Watch and possibly other new products as well.

Here’s everything you need to know about today’s Apple Event, including the time it starts in various places around the world and the new products Apple might launch. You will be able to watch the event below once it starts.

Follow along with us as the news breaks in our Live Blog of the Apple Event .

When is Apple’s iPhone event?

In 2023 Apple’s iPhone event will take place on Tuesday, September 12.

This is slightly later than in 2022, when Apple’s September event was held on Wednesday, September 7, but that was an earlier date than the annual iPhone event had been held in recent years—for example, in 2021 the event was held on Tuesday, September 14, and in 2020 it was even later, but 2020 was an unusual year due to Covid-19.

What time will the iPhone event start?

The Apple Event start time will be 10 a.m. in California. Here’s what that translates to in other countries around the world:

  • U.S.: 10 a.m. (PDT), 11 a.m. (MDT), 12 p.m. (CDT), 1 p.m. (EDT)
  • U.K.: 6 p.m. (BST)
  • Europe: 7 p.m. (CEST) 8 p.m. (EEST)
  • Canada: 10 a.m. (PDT), 11 a.m. (MDT), 12 p.m. (CDT), 1 p.m. (EDT), 2 p.m. (ADT)
  • India: 10.30 p.m. (IST)
  • Hong Kong, Singapore and China: The following day at 1 a.m.
  • Australia: The following day at 1 a.m. (AWST), 2.30 a.m. (ACST), 3 a.m. (AEST)
  • New Zealand: The following day at 5 a.m. (NZST)

Apple’s September events are usually one to two hours long.

Apple will broadcast the event live on its website and on YouTube. We have embedded the live video at the top of the article so you can watch it here.

If you want to watch the iPhone event live we explain how to watch the Apple Event in a separate article.

Will the iPhone event be live?

Apple hasn’t held a truly live event since September 2019. Instead, it shows a prerecorded video at the time a live event would be and often holds a small hands-on area to showcase the new products. Gurman predicts that will once again be the case, with members of the press gathering at Apple Park to watch the same video Apple will show to the rest of the world.

What will Apple launch at the September event?

We expect the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to be the stars of the event, closely followed by the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, but other new products are also likely on the way including the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. We may also see a new iPad mini and the long-rumored AirPods Lite . We may also see new Apple Earpods with USB-C replace the Lightning versions.

At the iPhone event, Apple is also likely to announce the date when it will release the new iOS 17 and watchOS 10 operating systems, most likely a few days after the event. We may also get a download date for iPadOS 17 , which is usually released at the same time as iOS, but sometimes the iPadOS launches a little later. Apple is also likely to reveal when the next updates to tvOS and HomePod software will be available.

At the 2022 iPhone 14 event we saw Apple launch the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE (2nd gen), Apple Watch Ultra, and AirPods Pro (2nd gen). That was a lot of new products, we aren’t expecting quite so much new hardware this September.

Here’s everything we expect from Apple’s September event:

iPhone 15, Plus, Pro, and Max (or maybe Ultra)

It looks like we’ll be getting four new iPhones this year, a similar lineup to 2022, with a standard iPhone 15 and a larger Plus model and a more advanced iPhone 15 Pro and larger Max. There are rumors that the Max could become the Ultra. The rumors suggest the Pro models are the ones getting the majority of the new features, as usual, although it may be the case that the Max-sized model gets new features the Pro misses out on.

  • iPhone 15: same 6.1-inch display but with Dynamic Island, A16 processor, same 6GB RAM but may adopt the LPDDR5 RAM, U2 chip, USB-C instead of Lightning, mute switch to become solid-state button, new green, yellow, and pink finishes.
  • iPhone 15 Plus: same 6.7-inch display but with Dynamic Island, A16 processor, same 6GB RAM but may adopt the LPDDR5 RAM, U2 chip, USB-C instead of Lightning, mute switch to become solid-state button, new green, yellow, and pink finishes.
  • iPhone 15 Pro: same 6.1-inch display with ProMotion and Dynamic Island, slimmer bezels and rounded corners, A17 processor, 8GB RAM, U2 chip, USB-C instead of Lightning, mute switch to become solid-state button, new dark red finish.
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max (or Ultra): same 6.7-inch display with ProMotion and Dynamic Island, slimmer bezels and rounded corners, A17 processor, 8GB RAM, U2 chip, USB-C instead of Lightning, mute switch to become solid-state button, new dark red finish, periscope lens with 6x optical zoom, support for 8K video recording.

Read the latest news about the iPhone 15 series .

Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra

There’s more than one Apple Watch in the pipeline, it seems. An Apple Watch 9 and a new Apple Watch Ultra are coming with a new chip, but not much else.

  • Apple Watch 9: Same 41mm and 45mm size, S9 chip, better battery life.
  • A pple Watch Ultra: Same 49mm size, S9 chip, better battery life.

This isn’t as certain as the iPhones and Watches, but we could see a new iPad mini launch at the September event, if we do here’s what’s expected:

  • iPad mini (7th gen) : A16 chip, increased storage (we hope).

Release dates

The following launch dates are likely if the iPhone 15 event is held on Tuesday, September 12, or Wednesday, September 13:

  • Monday, September 18: Downloads begin for iOS 17. If you do want to update your iPhone and you are looking for advice on how to install it read: How to update iOS on your iPhone .
  • Friday, September 15 : iPhone 15 and new Apple Watch preorders begin.
  • Friday, September 22 : iPhone 15 and new Apple Watch models are available for purchase.

Even with all these potential launches Apple won’t be done for the year. There are rumors that Apple will launch a new M3 iMac and other Macs at an October event .

Apple ‘Scary Fast’ Mac launch event: the 4 biggest announcements

Apple’s Mac-heavy product launch event gave us our first look at the M3-equipped iMac and MacBook Pro models.

Apple can’t quit Lightning

Dan Seifert runs down the news from Monday night’s Scary Fast primetime product event , covering what’s new about these updates to the MacBook Pro and iMac lineup and who should be the most interested in an upgrade. (Anyone who needs that Space Black exterior or someone who is replacing an Apple machine with an Intel processor or the first-gen M1 chip.)

Apple’s prime-time product event went by pretty quickly on Monday nigh t, but if you just want the highlights, here’s a 10-minute version with everything you need to know about the new M3 chips , as well as its updated MacBook Pros and iMacs .

An image of the Apple Touch Bar. There is a row of emoji including the peace sign and a flushing face.

Goodbye, Touch Bar, you held incredible promise

The Touch Bar was meant to be the future of computing, but a lack of interest from developers and Apple itself turned it into a mere proof of concept.

Here’s what Apple really means when it says ‘shot on iPhone’

Tim Cook being illuminated by huge studio lights

That’s right: despite finally bringing the iPhone over to the world of USB-C, Apple still only sells its Magic Keyboard , Magic Trackpad , and Magic Mouse with Lightning ports. Also, you still have to charge the Magic Mouse from the bottom in 2023.

Thank goodness! After Apple’s “Scary Fast” (and scary short) event , the Apple Polishing Cloth continues to be the most compatible thing Apple makes .

apple presentation 2023 date

Boy, that was brisk. And we were left with a fun fact: the whole thing was shot on an iPhone 15 Pro Max! Other than one moment where it looked like Johny Srouji was walking in front of a green screen, it really did look good. Especially in the dark.

Go read all our stories on The Verge , and stay tuned for all of our reviews and hands-on coverage as soon as we’re able to get our hands on these new devices. See you next time! Hopefully in the daytime!

And there was not a single scary costume! The vibes were spooky enough, but for an Apple event during prime time TV watching hours, I was hoping for something just a little... more .

Illustration of Apple’s M3 chips

Apple just took the old one, changed nothing, kept it at $1,299, added the M3 chip, and called it a day? At least it’s replacing the Intel models for good, but still.

To be clear, the 24-inch iMac is a lovely device. But... this is all we get? Not even a space black iMac?

apple presentation 2023 date

The 24-inch iMac is getting updated to the M3 processor. The design is staying just as beautifully thin, but Apple is claiming it will be twice as fast as the M1 24-inch iMac.

Apple’s M3 iMac.

22 hours of battery life sounds great, “11x faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro” is a truly hilarious comparison, and I have high hopes for the performance on this thing.

The new Pro starts at $1,599, by the way, for the 14-inch model. The 16-inch model starts at $2,499.

apple presentation 2023 date

Apple’s super-noticeable white cables have forever driven me crazy. I am... very into the new space black charger for the new space black MacBook Pro. I want it. I need it.

apple presentation 2023 date

And it’s all black — space black, to be exact. Very 2006 MacBook, in the best of ways.

Apple’s MacBook Pro in Space Black.

The MacBook Pro is starting to catch up to the Mac Pro! It used to max out at 96GB of unified memory, but the new Pro can go up to 128GB. That’s not quite as high as the 192GB in the latest Mac Pro, but you know, it’s a laptop. Can’t have everything.

apple presentation 2023 date

And Apple claims it will be up to 11 times faster than the last generation of Intel-based Macs. Which... I would hope so.

The story is all about performance, it seems — not seeing any big design changes here. Kate Bergeron is guiding us through the ways it’s better for creators and a much better gaming machine.

Also, it sounds like the 14-inch Pro is the only one you can buy with a plain M3? Bergeron makes it sound like the 16-inch model starts with the M3 Pro.

Apple’s chip speed charts are improving every year, but they’re still not nearly as functional as they could be.

An image of a relatively useless chart.

We’re getting the traditional “deep dive into the weird specs of the new chips with Johny Srouji,” and one of the things he’s talking a lot about is ray tracing, which is crucial for drawing high-res and realistic virtual spaces. That matters for gaming, the metaverse... and the Vision Pro.

apple presentation 2023 date

They’re on 3nm technology, which should mean a whole heckuva lot faster than the current M2 family of chips.

The M1 and M2 were both launched many months ahead of their Pro and Max, but Apple’s dropping the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max together this time. Fascinating!

Apple's 2024 Event Plans: New Products Coming in 2024

Each year, Apple typically holds three or four events to unveil new products. There's generally a spring event around March or April, the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, a September event focused on the iPhone and Apple Watch, and sometimes, an October event that usually includes Macs and iPads.

What to Expect from Apple in 2024 Feature 2

February Vision Pro Launch

Apple in February launched the Vision Pro, its first new product of 2024. There was no launch event because it had already been introduced at WWDC last June, but Apple did market it through product videos and a press release. The Vision Pro is priced starting at $3,500, and as of right now, it is limited to the United States.

visionOS, the operating system that runs on the Vision Pro, also came out in February.

As an entirely new product, the Vision Pro has some cutting-edge technology and you can find all the details on the device in our Vision Pro roundup .

Surprise March MacBook Air Launch

In late 2023, there were rumors that Apple would hold a 2024 spring event to unveil new MacBook Air and iPad Pro models, but in late February, we got word that Apple had no plans for an event after all.

On March 4, Apple announced the new 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch MacBook Air models . There are few physical changes compared to the prior-generation MacBook Air models from 2022 and 2023, but both machines adopt the 3-nanometer M3 chip. The M3 is approximately 20 percent faster than the prior-generation M2 chip, and it has improved graphics capabilities such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

Other new additions include Wi-Fi 6E, a fingerprint-resistant coating for the Midnight color, and microphone improvements, with details available in our MacBook Air roundup .

May iPad Pro and iPad Air Event

In late April, Apple announced an event to be held on Tuesday, May 7, with rumors pointing to new iPad Pro and iPad Air models plus some updated accessories.

The event saw the introduction of redesigned ultra-thin iPad Pro models in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, both featuring new "Ultra Retina XDR" OLED display panels that offer enhanced contrast for improved HDR, better colors, and greater power efficiency. The iPad Pro models also include the all-new M4 chip, double the starting storage at 256GB, and a relocated landscape front camera and Face ID module.

Alongside the iPad Pro, Apple also introduced an updated Magic Keyboard with an aluminum shell, function keys and a larger haptic trackpad, plus a new Apple Pencil Pro with squeeze and barrel roll gestures, haptic feedback and Find My support.

The iPad Air also saw a significant update at the event, with the lineup expanding to two sizes for the first time with 11-inch and 13-inch models now available. Both models feature Apple's M2 chip and a relocated landscape FaceTime camera.

Finally, Apple discontinued the ninth-generation iPad and reduced the price of the 10th-generation iPad by $100, with Apple's cheapest iPad now starting at $349.

WWDC in June

The Worldwide Developers Conference in June will see Apple unveiling iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, macOS 15, HomePod Software 18, and visionOS 2. The updates will officially launch in September, but Apple previews them in June and begins seeding beta versions to testers to give Apple time to incorporate new features and refine them.

With iOS 18, Apple is introducing a new focus on artificial intelligence, specifically large language models that are similar to what's offered by companies like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

Rumors suggest that Apple plans to integrate AI capabilities into a range of apps to give them more advanced functionality. In Apple Music, for example, Apple might add AI-generated playlists, and apps like Keynote and Pages could have AI-generated writing tools or slide creation options.

Siri will be smarter than before and could include deeper integration with the Shortcuts app, letting the personal assistant complete more complex tasks.

September iPhone Event

Apple's September event will include new flagship iPhone models and new Apple Watch models, plus it sometimes also includes updated AirPods. We've outlined some of what we're expecting below.

The standard iPhone 16 models will get the Action button added to the iPhone 15 Pro, alongside a new Capture button that's designed to make it easy to capture videos when the iPhone is held in a horizontal orientation. We're also expecting an upgraded A-series chip that's branded as an A18 chip, plus a rear camera lens setup arranged in a vertical orientation rather than a diagonal orientation.

Aside from the new Capture and Action buttons and the camera tweak, the iPhone 16 models are expected to look identical to the iPhone 15 models. Full details on the iPhone 16 feature set can be found in our iPhone 16 roundup .

iPhone 16 Pro

As with the iPhone 16 models, the iPhone 16 Pro models will look like the prior-generation iPhone 15 Pro models, but we are going to get bigger screen sizes. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to have a 6.3-inch display, up from 6.1 inches, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to have a 6.9-inch display, up from 6.7 inches.

The Pro models will feature the Capture button, a faster A-series chip, and an upgraded 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera, plus the tetraprism 5x Telephoto lens introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be in both the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the smaller iPhone 16 Pro this time around.

More on what to expect from the iPhone 16 Pro can be found in our iPhone 16 Pro roundup .

Apple Watch X

In 2024, we're expecting the Apple Watch Series 10 or Apple Watch X, which will coincide with the 10th anniversary of the device if you're counting from when it was introduced in 2014 rather than when it launched in 2015.

Rumors suggest that the Apple Watch this year could get a major redesign that will make it thinner, and there is a possibility that it will feature a new magnetic band system for attaching bands. If Apple does swap over to this, there is a chance that existing bands won't be compatible with the new models.

We're also counting on new health features that include blood pressure monitoring for hypertension detection and the ability for the Apple Watch to tell whether someone has sleep apnea using sleep data and breathing information.

Apple is working on a fourth-generation version of the AirPods, which are expected to come out sometime around September 2024. There will be two models, one with the Active Noise Cancellation technology that has been limited to the AirPods Pro.

The AirPods 4 will come in at two different price points, and both models will feature a new design with shorter stems, and a case with USB-C charging and speakers for Find My alerts. Apple is also expected to add hearing aid functionality that will let the AirPods serve as an alternative to a traditional hearing aid.

AirPods Max

Apple will finally refresh the AirPods Max in 2024, but don't expect new features. Apple plans to keep the design and the internals the same, swapping only the Lightning port for a USB-C port. New colors are a possibility, though.

Late 2024/Early 2025 M4 Macs

According to Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to begin refreshing the Mac lineup with M4 chips as soon as late 2024. Several Macs are slated to be refreshed in the late 2024 or early 2025 timeframe, but Apple's exact release plans aren't yet clear.

The 24-inch iMac will be updated with the next-generation M4 chip in late 2024. The M4 is expected to feature improved performance to support AI tasks, and rumors suggest that Apple will add an updated Neural Engine with more cores.

MacBook Pro

Apple will refresh the MacBook Pro lineup with the M4-series chips starting in late 2024 or early 2025. The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro will get the M4 chip in late 2024, while the 14-inch and 16-inch models will be refreshed with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips in either late 2024 or early 2025.

The Mac mini will be updated in late 2024 or early 2025. Right now, Apple sells a standard M2 version and an M2 Pro version, and we are expecting that to continue with the M4 lineup. The Mac mini is likely to have M4 and M4 Pro chip options.

2025 M4 Mac Refresh

Several other Macs will be updated with M4-series chips across 2025.

MacBook Air

Apple plans to refresh the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models sometime in spring 2025, updating them with M4 chips. Design changes are not expected, with the focus to be on the chip refresh. Spring 2025 ranges from March 20 to June 20.

The Mac Studio was updated with M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips in June 2023, and it sounds like Apple might possibly skip M3 chips in the desktop machine. Current rumors suggest the Mac Studio will be updated in mid-2025, and mid-year updates usually happen around WWDC. The Mac Studio will likely get M4 Max and M4 Ultra chips, keeping in line with the current options.

Apple plans to update the Mac Pro sometime in late 2025. It will be equipped with the highest-end version of the M4 chip, which is codenamed "Hidra," and it could be either an "Ultra" or "Extreme" M4 chip. The Mac Pro is also expected to support up to 512GB Unified Memory.

Products With Unknown Release Dates

There are a number of new products in the works that don't yet have specific release dates associated with them. Some of these could come at an October event, or at other times throughout the year.

  • Apple TV 4K - A new Apple TV 4K with a faster A16 processor is rumored to be coming in 2024.
  • iPad mini 7 - The next iPad mini won't have any design updates, but it could have an upgraded A-series chip and new front and rear cameras.
  • Low-cost iPad - Apple is working on an 11th-generation iPad with a faster chip and support for Wi-Fi 6E.
  • HomePod with Display - Apple is rumored to be working on a next-generation version of the HomePod that has a touchscreen display at the top. This would look similar to the existing HomePod, but the screen would be able to be interacted with in new ways.
  • New Display - There have been multiple rumors of a Pro Display XDR successor, but there's no word on when an update might come.
  • Home Hub Device - Rumors suggest Apple is working on a smart home display that would serve as a central hub for controlling smart home products, and it could launch as soon as 2024.

Further in the Future

  • iMac Pro - Apple could introduce a larger 32-inch iMac, replacing the previously discontinued 27-inch iMac. Apple's plans and a potential launch date continue to be unclear.
  • Foldable iPhone - Apple is allegedly working on a foldable iPhone that might be between 7.5 and 8 inches, with a launch date slated for 2025 at the earliest.
  • Foldable iPad/Mac - Before we ever get a foldable iPhone, Apple will introduce some kind of foldable notebook and perhaps a foldable iPad. Current rumors suggest that Apple is working on a 20-inch MacBook that has a foldable display, but it won't come out for at least three years.
  • Vision Pro 2 - Apple is working on a new Vision Pro, or multiple new models. Rumors are a little mixed right now, but Apple seems to want a successor for the current model and also a lower-cost version that would be closer in price to the iPhone.

PRESS RELEASE

Featuring a new thin and light design, breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display, and outrageously fast M4 performance with powerful AI capabilities, the new iPad Pro takes a huge leap forward

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today unveiled the groundbreaking new iPad Pro in a stunningly thin and light design, taking portability and performance to the next level. Available in silver and space black finishes, the new iPad Pro comes in two sizes: an expansive 13-inch model and a super-portable 11-inch model. Both sizes feature the world’s most advanced display — a new breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display with state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology — providing a remarkable visual experience. The new iPad Pro is made possible with the new M4 chip, the next generation of Apple silicon, which delivers a huge leap in performance and capabilities. M4 features an entirely new display engine to enable the precision, color, and brightness of the Ultra Retina XDR display. With a new CPU, a next-generation GPU that builds upon the GPU architecture debuted on M3, and the most powerful Neural Engine yet, the new iPad Pro is an outrageously powerful device for artificial intelligence. The versatility and advanced capabilities of iPad Pro are also enhanced with all-new accessories. Apple Pencil Pro brings powerful new interactions that take the pencil experience even further, and a new thinner, lighter Magic Keyboard is packed with incredible features. The new iPad Pro, Apple Pencil Pro, and Magic Keyboard are available to order starting today, with availability in stores beginning Wednesday, May 15.

“iPad Pro empowers a broad set of pros and is perfect for anyone who wants the ultimate iPad experience — with its combination of the world’s best displays, extraordinary performance of our latest M-series chips, and advanced accessories — all in a portable design. Today, we’re taking it even further with the new, stunningly thin and light iPad Pro, our biggest update ever to iPad Pro,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. “With the breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display, the next-level performance of M4, incredible AI capabilities, and support for the all-new Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard, there’s no device like the new iPad Pro.”

The new iPad Pro — the thinnest Apple product ever — features a stunningly thin and light design, taking portability to a whole new level. The 11-inch model is just 5.3 mm thin, and the 13-inch model is even thinner at a striking 5.1 mm, while both models are just as strong as the previous design. The 11-inch model weighs less than a pound, and the 13-inch model is nearly a quarter pound lighter than its predecessor — allowing pro users to extend their workflows in new ways and in more places. The new iPad Pro is available in two gorgeous finishes — silver and space black — both with 100 percent recycled aluminum enclosures.

The new iPad Pro debuts the Ultra Retina XDR, the world’s most advanced display, to provide an even more remarkable visual experience. The Ultra Retina XDR display features state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology that uses two OLED panels and combines the light from both to provide phenomenal full-screen brightness. The new iPad Pro supports an incredible 1000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content, and 1600 nits peak for HDR. No other device of its kind delivers this level of extreme dynamic range. Tandem OLED technology enables sub-millisecond control over the color and luminance of each pixel, taking XDR precision further than ever. Specular highlights in photos and video appear even brighter, and there’s more detail in shadows and low light than ever before on iPad — all while delivering even more responsiveness to content in motion. For pro users working in high-end, color-managed workflows or challenging lighting conditions, a new nano-texture glass option comes to iPad Pro for the first time. 1 Nano-texture glass is precisely etched at a nanometer scale, maintaining image quality and contrast while scattering ambient light for reduced glare. With its breakthrough tandem OLED technology, extreme brightness, incredibly precise contrast, brilliant colors, and nano-texture glass option, the new Ultra Retina XDR display is the world’s most advanced display, giving iPad Pro customers an unparalleled viewing experience.

The incredibly thin and light design and game-changing display of the new iPad Pro is only possible with M4, the next generation of Apple silicon that delivers a huge leap in performance. M4 is built on second-generation 3-nanometer technology that’s even more power efficient, which is perfect for the design of the new iPad Pro. With an entirely new display engine, M4 introduces pioneering technology for the stunning precision, color, and brightness of the Ultra Retina XDR display. The new CPU offers up to four performance cores and now six efficiency cores, 2 with next-generation machine learning (ML) accelerators, to deliver up to 1.5x faster CPU performance over M2 in the previous-generation iPad Pro. 3 M4 builds on the GPU architecture of M3 — the 10-core GPU includes powerful features like Dynamic Caching, and hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing, which come to iPad for the first time. Coupled with higher unified memory bandwidth, pro rendering apps like Octane will see up to 4x faster performance than M2. 3 M4 also delivers tremendous gains and industry-leading performance per watt. Compared to M2, M4 can deliver the same performance using just half the power, and compared to the latest PC chip in a thin and light laptop, M4 can deliver the same performance using just a quarter of the power. 4 A new advanced Media Engine includes support for AV1 decode, providing more power-efficient playback of high-resolution video experiences from streaming services.

The new iPad Pro with M4 features Apple’s most powerful Neural Engine ever, capable of 38 trillion operations per second, which is 60x faster than Apple’s first Neural Engine in the A11 Bionic chip. Combined with next-generation ML accelerators in the CPU, a high-performance GPU, more memory bandwidth, and intelligent features and powerful developer frameworks in iPadOS, the Neural Engine makes the new iPad Pro an outrageously powerful device for AI. With iPad Pro with M4, users can perform AI-enabled tasks even faster, like easily isolate a subject from its background in 4K video with just a tap with Scene Removal Mask in Final Cut Pro. With this advanced level of performance, the Neural Engine in M4 is more powerful than any neural processing unit in any AI PC today.

iPadOS also has advanced frameworks like Core ML that make it easy for developers to tap into the Neural Engine to deliver phenomenal AI features locally, including running powerful diffusion and generative AI models, with great performance on device. iPad Pro also supports cloud-based solutions, enabling users to run powerful productivity and creative apps that tap into the power of AI, such as Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Adobe Firefly.

The updated camera system on the new iPad Pro delivers even more versatility, and with its rich audio from four studio-quality mics, users can shoot, edit, and share all on one device. The 12MP back camera captures vibrant Smart HDR images and video with even better color, improved textures, and detail in low light. It also now features a new adaptive True Tone flash that makes document scanning on the new iPad Pro better than ever. Using AI, the new iPad Pro automatically identifies documents right in the Camera app, and if a shadow is in the way, it instantly takes multiple photos with the new adaptive flash, stitching the scan together for a dramatically better scan.

On the front, the TrueDepth camera system moves to the landscape location on the new iPad Pro. The Ultra Wide 12MP camera with Center Stage makes the experience of video conferencing in landscape orientation even better, especially when iPad is attached to a Magic Keyboard or Smart Folio.

iPad Pro includes a high-performance USB-C connector with support for Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4, delivering fast wired connectivity — up to 40Gb/s. Thunderbolt supports an extensive ecosystem of high-performance accessories, including external displays like the Pro Display XDR at its full 6K resolution, and external storage, all connected using high-performance cables and docks. iPad Pro supports Wi-Fi 6E for super-fast Wi-Fi connections for pro workflows on the go. Wi-Fi + Cellular models with 5G allow users to access their files, communicate with colleagues, and back up their data in a snap while on the go. Cellular models of the new iPad Pro are activated with eSIM, a more secure alternative to a physical SIM card, allowing users to quickly connect and transfer their existing plans digitally, and store multiple cellular plans on a single device. Customers can easily get connected to wireless data plans on the new iPad Pro in over 190 countries and regions around the world without needing to get a physical SIM card from a local carrier.

Apple Pencil Pro features even more magical capabilities and powerful new interactions that take the Apple Pencil experience even further. A new sensor in the barrel can sense a user’s squeeze, bringing up a tool palette to quickly switch tools, line weights, and colors, all without interrupting the creative process. A custom haptic engine delivers a light tap that provides confirmation when users squeeze, use double-tap, or snap to a Smart Shape for a remarkably intuitive experience. A gyroscope allows users to roll Apple Pencil Pro for precise control of the tool they’re using. Rotating the barrel changes the orientation of shaped pen and brush tools, just like pen and paper. And with Apple Pencil hover, users can visualize the exact orientation of a tool before making a mark.

With these advanced features, Apple Pencil Pro allows users to bring their ideas to life in entirely new ways, and developers can also create their own custom interactions. Apple Pencil Pro brings support for Find My for the first time to Apple Pencil, helping users locate Apple Pencil Pro if misplaced. It pairs, charges, and is stored on the side of iPad Pro through a new magnetic interface. iPad Pro also supports Apple Pencil (USB-C), ideal for note taking, sketching, annotating, journaling, and more, at an incredible value.

Designed for the new iPad Pro, an all-new thinner and lighter Magic Keyboard makes it more portable and versatile than ever. The new Magic Keyboard opens to the magical floating design that customers love, and now includes a function row for access to features like screen brightness and volume controls. It also has a gorgeous aluminum palm rest and larger trackpad that’s even more responsive with haptic feedback, so the entire experience feels just like using a MacBook. The new Magic Keyboard attaches magnetically, and the Smart Connector immediately connects power and data without the need for Bluetooth. The machined aluminum hinge also includes a USB-C connector for charging. The new Magic Keyboard comes in two colors that perfectly complement the new iPad Pro: black with a space black aluminum palm rest, and white with a silver aluminum palm rest.

The new Smart Folio for iPad Pro attaches magnetically and now supports multiple viewing angles for greater flexibility. Available in black, white, and denim, it complements the colors of the new iPad Pro.

iPadOS is packed with features that push the boundaries of what’s possible on iPad. With Reference Mode, iPadOS can precisely match color requirements of the Ultra Retina XDR display for tasks in which accurate colors and consistent image quality are critical — including review and approve, color grading, and compositing. Stage Manager enables users to work with multiple overlapping windows in a single view, resize windows, tap to switch between apps, and more. With full external display support of up to 6K, iPad Pro users can also extend their workflow, as well as use the built-in camera on an external display for enhanced video conferencing. Users can take advantage of the powerful AI capabilities in iPad Pro and intelligent features in iPadOS, including Visual Look Up, Subject Lift, Live Text, or Live Captions and Personal Voice for accessibility.

With iPadOS 17 , users can customize the Lock Screen to make it more personal — taking advantage of the larger display on iPad — and interactive widgets take glanceable information further with the ability to get tasks done right in the moment with just a tap. The Notes app gives users new ways to organize, read, annotate, and collaborate on PDFs, and working with PDFs is also easier with AutoFill, which intelligently identifies and fills fields in forms.

Logic Pro for iPad 2 , available starting Monday, May 13, introduces incredible studio assistant features that augment the music-making process and provide artists help right when they need it — all while ensuring they maintain full creative control. These features include Session Players, which expand on popular Drummer capabilities in Logic to include a new Bass Player and Keyboard Player; ChromaGlow, to instantly add warmth to tracks; and Stem Splitter, to extract and work with individual parts of a single audio recording.

Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 , available later this spring, introduces Live Multicam, a new feature that transforms iPad into a mobile production studio, allowing users to view and control up to four connected iPhone and iPad devices wirelessly. 5 To support Live Multicam, an all-new capture app also comes to iPad and iPhone, Final Cut Camera, 6 giving users control over options like white balance, ISO, and shutter speed, along with monitoring tools like overexposure indicators and focus peaking. Final Cut Camera works as a standalone capture app or with Live Multicam. Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 also allows users to create or open projects from external storage, giving editors even more flexibility, and offers new content options. 7

The new iPad Pro is designed with the environment in mind, including 100 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure, 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, and 100 percent recycled gold plating and tin soldering in multiple printed circuit boards. The new iPad Pro meets Apple’s high standards for energy efficiency, and is free of mercury, brominated flame retardants, and PVC. The packaging is 100 percent fiber-based, bringing Apple closer to its goal to remove plastic from all packaging by 2025.

Today, Apple is carbon neutral for global corporate operations, and by 2030, plans to be carbon neutral across the entire manufacturing supply chain and life cycle of every product.
