Math Course Placement by Age and Level

AoPS Academy math curriculum, as with all of our curricula, is advanced and rigorous. Although we designed the program to be based loosely on the Common Core standards, we cover grade-level standards in greater depth than other elementary and middle school math curriculum.

Because of our instructional approach to problem solving and logical thinking, we often introduce concepts that other math curricula may not introduce until a grade or two later. This is one reason why we use “level” instead of “grade” to define our math offerings.

Our placement tests determine if your student has the prerequisite knowledge to start a course level. For example, to confirm that your student is ready to take Honors Math 3A/3B, they should take the Honors Math 3A/3B placement test.

Summer courses are designed for students who will be ready to take Honors Math of the corresponding level in the fall. For example, many students take a Math Beasts Camp 3 offering either the summer before the third grade or the summer after, depending on when they plan to take Honors Math 3.

We recommend that you choose your student's Beast Academy Level by their age:

  • Students ages 6-8 should begin Beast Academy in Level 1
  • Students ages 7-9 should begin Beast Academy in Level 2
  • Students ages 8-10 should begin Beast Academy in Level 3
  • Students ages 9-12 should begin Beast Academy in Level 4
  • Students ages 10-13 should begin Beast Academy in Level 5

You can use the placement tests below to help you choose the right level.

There are four placement tests for each BA level, one for each unit. For example, level 2 includes tests for Beast Academy 2A, 2B, 2C, and 2D. Each test covers three chapters. For example, 2A covers Chapters 1-3, 2B covers Chapters 4-6, etc.

Students using BA Online have access to every chapter in every level and can adjust as needed while using the program.

Each test includes instructions for administration and grading, as well as complete solutions.
