Biographers collect information from the subject (if he/she is available), acquaintances of the subject, or in researching other sources such as reference material, experts, records, diaries, interviews, etc. Most biographers intend to present the life story of a person and establish the context of their story for the reader, whether in terms of history and/or the present day. In turn, the reader can be reasonably assured that the information presented about the biographical subject is as true and authentic as possible.

Biographies can be written about a person at any time, no matter if they are living or dead. However, there are limitations to biography as a literary device. Even if the subject is involved in the biographical process, the biographer is restricted in terms of access to the subject’s thoughts or feelings.

Biographical works typically include details of significant events that shape the life of the subject as well as information about their childhood, education, career, and relationships. Occasionally, a biography is made into another form of art such as a film or dramatic production. Difference Between Biography, Autobiography, and Memoir

Biography, autobiography , and memoir are the three main forms used to tell the story of a person’s life. Though there are similarities between these forms, they have distinct differences in terms of the writing, style , and purpose.

A biography is an informational narrative and account of the life history of an individual person, written by someone who is not the subject of the biography. An autobiography is the story of an individual’s life, written by that individual. In general, an autobiography is presented chronologically with a focus on key events in the person’s life. Since the writer is the subject of an autobiography, it’s written in the first person and considered more subjective than objective, like a biography. In addition, autobiographies are often written late in the person’s life to present their life experiences, challenges, achievements, viewpoints, etc., across time.

Memoir refers to a written collection of a person’s significant memories, written by that person. Memoir doesn’t generally include biographical information or chronological events unless it’s relevant to the story being presented. The purpose of memoir is reflection and an intention to share a meaningful story as a means of creating an emotional connection with the reader. Memoirs are often presented in a narrative style that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Examples of Biography in Literature

An important subset of biography is literary biography. A literary biography applies biographical study and form to the lives of artists and writers. This poses some complications for writers of literary biographies in that they must balance the representation of the biographical subject, the artist or writer, as well as aspects of the subject’s literary works. This balance can be difficult to achieve in terms of judicious interpretation of biographical elements within an author’s literary work and consideration of the separate spheres of the artist and their art.

Literary biographies of artists and writers are among some of the most interesting biographical works. It wasn’t vulgar. ‘So we sat darning socks on Waverly Place and practiced the use of profanity as we stitched. Needle in, . Needle out, piss. Needle in, . Needle out, c. Until we were easy with the words.’

This passage reflects the way in which Milford is able to characterize St. Vincent Millay as a person interacting with her sister. Even avid readers of a writer’s work are often unaware of the artist’s private and personal natures, separate from their literature and art. Milford reflects the balance required on the part of a literary biographer of telling the writer’s life story without undermining or interfering with the meaning and understanding of the literature produced by the writer. Though biographical information can provide some influence and context for a writer’s literary subjects, style, and choices , there is a distinction between the fictional world created by a writer and the writer’s “real” world. However, a literary biographer can illuminate the writer’s story so that the reader of both the biography and the biographical subject’s literature finds greater meaning and significance.

Example 2:  The Invisible Woman: The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens  (Claire Tomalin)

The season of domestic goodwill and festivity must have posed a problem to all good Victorian family men with more than one family to take care of, particularly when there were two lots of children to receive the demonstrations of paternal love.

Tomalin’s literary biography of Charles Dickens reveals the writer’s extramarital relationship with a woman named Nelly Ternan. Tomalin presents the complications that resulted for Dickens from this relationship in terms of his personal and family life as well as his professional writing and literary work. Revealing information such as an extramarital relationship can influence the way a reader may feel about the subject as a person, and in the case of literary biography it can influence the way readers feel about the subject’s literature as well. Artists and writers who are beloved , such as Charles Dickens, are often idealized by their devoted readers and society itself. However, as Tomalin’s biography of Dickens indicates, artists and writers are complicated and as subject to human failings as anyone else.

Example 3:  Virginia Woolf  (Hermione Lee)

‘A self that goes on changing is a self that goes on living’: so too with the biography of that self. And just as lives don’t stay still, so life-writing can’t be fixed and finalised. Our ideas are shifting about what can be said, our knowledge of human character is changing. The biographer has to pioneer, going ‘ahead of the rest of us, like the miner’s canary, testing the atmosphere , detecting falsity, unreality, and the presence of obsolete conventions’. So, ‘There are some stories which have to be retold by each generation’. She is talking about the story of Shelley, but she could be talking about her own life-story.

In this passage, Lee is able to demonstrate what her biographical subject, Virginia Woolf, felt about biography and a person telling their own or another person’s story. Literary biographies of well-known writers can be especially difficult to navigate in that both the author and biographical subject are writers, but completely separate and different people. As referenced in this passage by Lee, Woolf was aware of the subtleties and fluidity present in a person’s life which can be difficult to judiciously and effectively relay to a reader on the part of a biographer. In addition, Woolf offers insight into the fact that biographers must make choices in terms of what information is presented to the reader and the context in which it is offered, making them a “miner’s canary” as to how history will view and remember the biographical subject.

Significance of Biography in Literature

The genre of biography developed out of other forms of historical nonfiction, choosing to focus on one specific person’s experience rather than all important players. There are examples of biography all the way back to 44 B.C. when Roman biographer Cornelius Nepos wrote Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae (“Lives of those capable of commanding”). The Greek historian Plutarch was also famous for his biographies, creating a series of biographies of famous Greeks and Romans in his book Parallel Lives . After the printing press was created, one of the first “bestsellers” was the 1550 famous biography Lives of the Artists by Giorgio Vasari. Biography then got very popular in the 18th century with James Boswell’s 1791 publication of The Life of Samuel Johnson . Biography continues to be one of the best selling genres in literature, and has led to a number of literary prizes specifically for this form.

Tracy Kidder’s wonderful example of biography, Mountains Beyond Mountains , brought the work of Dr. Paul Farmer to a wider audience. Dr. Farmer cofounded the organization Partners in Health (PIH) in 1987 to provide free treatment to patients in Haiti; the organization later created similar projects in countries such as Russia, Peru, and Rwanda. Dr. Farmer was not necessarily a famous man before Tracy Kidder’s biography was published, though he was well-regarded in his own field. The biography describes Farmer’s work as well as some of his personal life.

On July 2, McCandless finished reading Tolstoy’s “Family Happiness”, having marked several passages that moved him: “He was right in saying that the only certain happiness in life is to live for others…” Then, on July 3, he shouldered his backpack and began the twenty-mile hike to the improved road. Jon Krakauer is a writer and outdoorsman famous for many nonfiction books, including his own experience in a mountaineering disaster on Mount Everest in 1996. His book Into the Wild is a nonfiction biography of a young boy, Christopher McCandless who chose to donate all of his money and go into the wilderness in the American West. McCandless starved to death in Denali National Park in 1992. The biography delved into the facts surrounding McCandless’s death, as well as incorporating some of Krakauer’s own experience.

Laura Hillenbrand’s bestselling biography Unbroken covers the life of Louis “Louie” Zamperini, who lived through almost unbelievable circumstances, including running in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, being shot down as a bomber in WWII, surviving in a raft in the ocean for 47 days, and then surviving Japanese prisoner of war camps. Zamperini’s life story is one of those narratives that is “stranger than fiction” and Hillenbrand brings the drama brilliantly to the reader.

I remember sitting in his backyard in his garden, one day, and he started talking about God. He [Jobs] said, “ Sometimes I believe in God, sometimes I don’t. I think it’s 50/50, maybe. But ever since I’ve had cancer, I’ve been thinking about it more, and I find myself believing a bit more, maybe it’s because I want to believe in an afterlife, that when you die, it doesn’t just all disappear. The wisdom you’ve accumulated, somehow it lives on.”

Research Skills:

Researching for biography writing is an excellent way for students to hone their research skills in general. Developing good research skills is essential for future academic success. Students will have opportunities to learn how to:

  • Gather relevant information
  • Evaluate different information sources
  • Select suitable information
  • Organize information into a text.

Students will have access to print and online information sources, and, in some cases, they may also have access to people who knew or know the subject (e.g. biography of a family member).

Though predominantly a nonfiction genre, the story still plays a significant role in good biography writing. The skills of characterization and plot structuring are transferable here. While the defining feature of a biography is that it gives an account of a person’s life, students must understand that this is not all a biography does. Relating the facts and details of a subject’s life is not enough. The student biographer should not be afraid to share their thoughts and feelings with the reader throughout their account of their subject’s life.

Elvis Aaron Presley, born on January 8, 1935, was an amazing singer and actor known as the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Even though he’s been dead for nearly 50 years, I can’t help but be fascinated by his incredible life!

Elvis grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a tiny house with his parents and twin brother. His family didn’t have much money, but they shared a love for music. Little did they know Elvis would become a music legend!

When he was only 11 years old, Elvis got his first guitar. He taught himself to play and loved singing gospel songs. As he got older, he started combining different music styles like country, blues, and gospel to create a whole new sound – that’s Rock ‘n’ Roll!

In 1954, at the age of 19, Elvis recorded his first song, “That’s All Right.” People couldn’t believe how unique and exciting his music was. His famous hip-swinging dance moves also made him a sensation!

Elvis didn’t just rock the music scene; he also starred in movies like “Love Me Tender” and “Jailhouse Rock.” But fame came with challenges. Despite facing ups and downs, Elvis kept spreading happiness through his music.

BIOGRAPHY WRITING TEACHING IDEAS AND LESSONS

We have compiled a sequence of biography-related lessons or teaching ideas that you can follow as you please. They are straightforward enough for most students to follow without further instruction.

BIOGRAPHY LESSON IDEA # 1:

This session aims to give students a broader understanding of what makes a good biography.

Once your students have compiled a comprehensive checklist of the main features of a biography, allow them to use it to assess some biographies from your school library or on the internet using the feature checklist.

When students have assessed a selection of biographies, take some time as a class to discuss them. You can base the discussion around the following prompts:

  • Which biographies covered all the criteria from their checklist?
  • Which biographies didn’t?
  • Which biography was the most readable in terms of structure?
  • Which biography do you think was the least well-structured? How would you improve this?

Looking at how other writers have interpreted the form will help students internalize the necessary criteria before attempting to produce a biography. Once students have a clear understanding of the main features of the biography, they’re ready to begin work on writing a biography.

When the time does come to put pen to paper, be sure they’re armed with the following top tips to help ensure they’re as well prepared as possible.

BIOGRAPHY LESSON IDEA # 2:

This session aims to guide students through the process of selecting the perfect biography subject.

Instruct students to draw up a shortlist of three potential subjects for the biography they’ll write.

Using the three criteria mentioned in the writing guide (Interest, Merit, and Information), students award each potential subject a mark out of 5 for each of the criteria. In this manner, students can select the most suitable subject for their biography.

BIOGRAPHY LESSON IDEA # 3:

This session aims to get students into the researching phase, then prioritise and organise events chronologically.

Students begin by making a timeline of their subject’s life, starting with their birth and ending with their death or the present day. If the student has yet to make a final decision on the subject of their biography, a family member will often serve well for this exercise as a practice exercise.

Students should research and gather the key events of the person’s life, covering each period of their life from when they were a baby, through childhood and adolescence, right up to adulthood and old age. They should then organize these onto a timeline. Students can include photographs with captions if they have them.

They can present these to the class when they have finished their timelines.

BIOGRAPHY LESSON IDEA # 4:

Instruct students to look over their timeline, notes, and other research. Challenge them to identify three patterns that repeat throughout the subject’s life and sort all the related events and incidents into specific categories.

Students should then label each category with a single word. This is the thematic concept or the broad general underlying idea. After that, students should write a sentence or two expressing what the subject’s life ‘says’ about that concept.

This is known as the thematic statement . With the thematic concepts and thematic statements identified, the student now has some substantial ideas to explore that will help bring more profound meaning and wider resonance to their biography.

BIOGRAPHY LESSON IDEA # 5:

Instruct students to write a short objective account of an event in their own life. They can write about anyone from their past. It needn’t be more than a couple of paragraphs, but the writing should be strictly factual, focusing only on the objective details of what happened.

Once they have completed this, it’s time to rewrite the paragraph, but they should include some opinion and personal commentary this time.

The student here aims to inject some color and personality into their writing, to transform a detached, factual account into a warm, engaging story.

To Conclude

By this stage, your students should have an excellent technical overview of a biography’s essential elements.

They should be able to choose their subject in light of how interesting and worthy they are, as well as give consideration to the availability of information out there. Biographies: The Stories of Humanity

A biography is a story of a person's life, written by another author. The writer of a biography is called a biographer while the person written about is known as the subject or biographee.

Biographies usually take the form of a narrative , proceeding chronologically through the stages of a person's life. American author Cynthia Ozick notes in her essay "Justice (Again) to Edith Wharton" that a good biography is like a novel, wherein it believes in the idea of a life as "a triumphal or tragic story with a shape, a story that begins at birth, moves on to a middle part, and ends with the death of the protagonist."

A biographical essay is a comparatively short work of nonfiction  about certain aspects of a person's life. By necessity, this sort of essay  is much more selective than a full-length biography, usually focusing only on key experiences and events in the subject's life.

Between History and Fiction

Perhaps because of this novel-like form, biographies fit squarely between written history and fiction, wherein the author often uses personal flairs and must invent details "filling in the gaps" of the story of a person's life that can't be gleaned from first-hand or available documentation like home movies, photographs, and written accounts.

Some critics of the form argue it does a disservice to both history and fiction, going so far as to call them "unwanted offspring, which has brought a great embarrassment to them both," as Michael Holroyd puts it in his book "Works on Paper: The Craft of Biography and Autobiography." Nabokov even called biographers "psycho-plagiarists," meaning that they steal the psychology of a person and transcribe it to the written form.

Biographies are distinct from creative non-fiction such as memoir in that biographies are specifically about one person's full life story -- from birth to death -- while creative non-fiction is allowed to focus on a variety of subjects, or in the case of memoirs certain aspects of an individual's life.

Writing a Biography

For writers who want to pen another person's life story, there are a few ways to spot potential weaknesses, starting with making sure proper and ample research has been conducted -- pulling resources such as newspaper clippings, other academic publications, and recovered documents and found footage.  

First and foremost, it is the duty of biographers to avoid misrepresenting the subject as well as acknowledging the research sources they used. Writers should, therefore, avoid presenting a personal bias for or against the subject as being objective is key to conveying the person's life story in full detail.

Perhaps because of this, John F. Parker observes in his essay "Writing: Process to Product" that some people find writing a biographical essay "easier than writing an  autobiographical  essay. Often it takes less effort to write about others than to reveal ourselves." In other words, in order to tell the full story, even the bad decisions and scandals have to make the page in order to truly be authentic.

Creative nonfiction: memoir vs. autobiography vs. biography.

Writing any type of nonfiction story can be a daunting task. As the author, you have the responsibility to tell a true story and share the facts as accurately as you can—while also making the experience enjoyable for the reader.

There are three primary formats to tell a creative nonfiction story: memoir, autobiography, and biography. Each has its own distinct characteristics, so it’s important to understand the differences between them to ensure you’re writing within the correct scope.

A memoir is a collection of personal memories related to specific moments or experiences in the author’s life. Told from the perspective of the author, memoirs are written in first person point of view.

The defining characteristic that sets memoirs apart from autobiographies and biographies is its scope. While the other genres focus on the entire timeline of a person’s life, memoirs structure themselves on one aspect, such as addiction, parenting, adolescence, disease, faith, etc.

They may tell stories from various moments in the author’s life, but they should read like a cohesive story—not just a re-telling of facts.

Unlike autobiographies and biographies, memoirs focus more on the author’s relationship to and feelings about his or her own memories. Memoirs tend to read more like a fiction novel than a factual account, and should include things like dialogue , setting, character descriptions, and more.

Authors looking to write a memoir can glean insight from both fiction and nonfiction genres. Although memoirs tell a true story, they focus on telling an engaging narrative, just like a novel. This gives memoir authors a little more flexibility to improve upon the story slightly for narrative effect.

However, you should represent dialogue and scenarios as accurately as you can, especially if you’re worried about libel and defamation lawsuits .

Examples of popular memoirs include Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

Key traits of a memoir:

- Written in 1 st person POV from the perspective of the author - Less formal compared to autobiographies and biographies - Narrow in scope or timeline - Focused more on feelings and memories than facts - More flexibility to change the story for effect

Autobiography

Like a memoir, an autobiography is the author’s retelling of his or her life and told in first person point of view, making the author the main character of the story.

Autobiographies are also narrative nonfiction, so the stories are true but also include storytelling elements such as a protagonist (the author), a central conflict, and a cast of intriguing characters.

Unlike memoirs, autobiographies focus more on facts than emotions. Because of this, a collaborator often joins the project to help the author tell the most factual, objective story possible.

While a memoir is limited in scope, an autobiography details the author’s entire life up to the present. An autobiography often begins when the author is young and includes detailed chronology, events, places, reactions, movements and other relevant happenings throughout the author’s life.

The chronology of an autobiography is organized but not necessarily in date order. For instance, the author may start from current time and employ flashbacks or he/she may organize events thematically.

Autobiographers use many sources of information to develop the story such as letters, photographs, and other personal memorabilia. However, like a memoir, the author’s personal memory is the primary resource. Any other sources simply enrich the story and relay accurate and engaging experiences.

A good autobiography includes specific details that only the author knows and provides context by connecting those details to larger issues, themes, or events. This allows the reader to relate more personally to the author’s experience. 

Examples of popular autobiographies include The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.

Key traits of an autobiography:

- Written in 1 st person POV from the perspective of the author, occasionally with the help of a collaborator - More formal and objective than memoirs, but more subjective than biographies - Broad in scope or timeline, often covering the author’s entire life up to the present - Focused more on facts than emotions - Requires more extensive fact-checking and research than memoirs, but less than biographies

A biography is the story of events and circumstances of a person’s life, written by someone other than that person. Usually, people write biographies about a  historical  or  public figure . They can be written with or without the subject’s authorization.

Since the author is telling the account of someone else, biographies are always in third person point of view and carry a more formal and objective tone than both memoirs and autobiographies.

Like an autobiography, biographies cover the entire scope of the subject’s life, so it should include details about his or her birthplace, educational background, work history, relationships, death and more.

Good biographers will research and study a person’s life to collect facts and present the most historically accurate, multi-faceted picture of an individual’s experiences as possible. A biography should include intricate details—so in-depth research is necessary to ensure accuracy.

However, biographies are still considered creative nonfiction, so the author has the ability to analyze and interpret events in the subject’s life, looking for meaning in their actions, uncovering mistakes, solving mysteries, connecting details, and highlighting the significance of the person's accomplishments or life activities.

Authors often organize events in chronological order, but can sometimes organize by themes or specific accomplishments or topics, depending on their book’s key idea.

Examples of popular biographies include Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

Key traits of a biography:

8.2–Nonfiction Genres

As other chapters have pointed out, genres provide writers with structural templates and conventions that they can choose to adhere to or deviate from. Most readers are familiar with genre conventions and structures, and come to expect that writers will decide either to follow them or break them creatively. These decisions are the first indicator that nonfiction writers must make creative choices, just as fiction writers do. Here are some of the more prevalent genres in nonfiction.

Autobiographies & Memoirs

While most people are aware that autobiographies and memoirs are nonfiction texts that focus on the author’s life, these words are not inherently interchangeable; instead, they represent an important creative choice that the writer made regarding what to emphasize in their life and how to structure it.

An autobiography always covers the entirety of the author’s life, from birth until the present day. This focus entails a chronological structure, and also predisposes the writer to frame every phase of their life as thematically significant for one reason or another. An author’s decision to cover the full extent of their life might suggest a desire to appear authentic to their audience (i.e. by not simply providing a highlight reel of their biggest accomplishments). It could also indicate that the author wants to contextualize their greatest or most famous accomplishments, so that the reader can see the struggles they endured or the formative moments they went through to get to their current status. Further still, the full scope of the author’s life might call attention to a part of themselves that’s less well-known but that they want their audience to understand. An autobiography can also be an author’s attempt to take stock of their lives and form a narrative from it. Any and all of these motivations can inform the author’s decision to write an autobiography.

Memoirs, by contrast, differ in that they only focus on a select part of an author’s life. This narrower focus could be because the author wants to focus on a particularly formative or famous (or infamous) experience in their life. Some memoirs, like David Sedaris’s works, are collections of memories, with each chapter covering an experience that ties to a larger theme about the author as a person or their outlook on life. Whether an author chooses to frame their life in an autobiography or a memoir, and regardless of their approach to either genre or their motive in crafting their text, none of these choices alter the fact that the author is focusing on real events (or at least their perception of them). As concrete and limited as nonfiction may appear in comparison to fiction, there is still quite a range of creative possibilities in this one genre.

Biographies

Though the focus of a biography is identical to that of an autobiography in that it is an account of someone’s life, biographies differ in that the author is writing about someone else’s life, and this entails an entirely different array of creative choices. To begin with, a famous person or historical figure often has multiple biographies written about them over long stretches of time, so a biographical author must focus on research in order to avoid libel and potential litigation. They also must establish their work as definitive or unique in comparison to other biographies.

For example, let’s say an author decides to write a biography about Robert E. Lee. Is the biography going to focus largely on his military career during the Civil War (as most Lee biographies do)? Will it focus on earlier times in his life (his childhood, time at West Point, the Mexican-American War), or during Reconstruction? Will it focus on more negative aspects of his legacy, such as his white supremacist beliefs and treatment of the enslaved Black Americans he owned? Will it review and critique prior biographies on Lee, or will it focus on new historical evidence? The author’s answers to these questions will have the largest impact on how they craft this nonfiction text.

Similar to fictional works of literature, many nonfiction essays address themes of social, historical, and cultural identity and character. Unlike fictional works, which often explore these ideas through allegory or characters, essays give authors the ability to address readers more directly, frame contemporary issues in a variety of aspects (from ironic satire to direct calls to action), and also craft a mutual collective identity with the readers whom these writers want to reach. For example, two prominent authors of fiction, Dorothy Parker and Mark Twain, simultaneously published non-fictional satire and social commentary on contemporary events.

In other cases, some essays’ influence has been so pervasive that they led to the creation of new genres. For example, Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood , originally composed as a series of essays rather than a novel, is often credited with inspiring the true crime genre that emerged after its publication.

Similar to essays, speeches narrow the gap between a writer, their audiences, and contemporary events. In fact, speeches often narrow this gap even more so than essays. This is not only because they tend to respond to a more specific exigence than other nonfiction forms of literature, but also because they are either composed orally or meant to be read aloud at a specific moment in time.

The second nonfiction text that this chapter will focus on, Frederick Douglass’s “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July,” was prepared to be read at a specific event: an 1852 meeting of the Rochester Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society in New York. Because of the speech’s import regarding the culture, history, and legacy of the United States, however, we continue to read it today and find it remains relevant in critiquing the white supremacist legacy of the nation.

Letters/Correspondence

Letters and correspondence (often from or between writers) can also be considered forms of nonfiction literature. More intimate than most of the other genres listed here, correspondence is shaped by the relationship between the writer and, usually, an audience of one. Letters exchanged form exigencies for one another (i.e., receiving a letter inspires the writing of another in response, and so on), and writers often employ the same tropes, schemes, and other literary elements that they might use in fiction. This includes point of view, diction, figurative language, symbolism, etc.

Additionally, literary correspondence can provide essential context for studying a fictional work, such as when an author writes to a literary critic or a loved one about a text. Mark Twain, for instance, frequently wrote letters to his publishers–enough for them to be published into their own collection, Mark Twain’s Letters to His Publishers .

Study Questions for Nonfiction Genre Categories

  • What genres of nonfiction cater to the broadest audiences, and which seem the most intimate? Why?
  • What should a nonfiction writer consider when choosing a genre for their text?

Literary Non-Fiction

Literary non-fiction is a type of writing that has similar characteristics to fictional texts. Like fictional texts , literary non-fiction often has a main purpose to entertain but is an entertaining piece of writing about real events rather than imaginary ones. They inform and provide factual information as well as entertaining their reader. Types of literary non-fiction include:

  • Autobiographies and biographies
  • Accounts of famous/historical events
  • Feature articles
  • Travel writing

Autobiographies and biographies are forms of writing that are based on real people. An autobiography is where the writer writes about themselves whereas a biography is where the writer writes about someone else. Often, autobiographies and biographies are whole books that focus on someone’s entire life; however, they can also focus on a specific period of someone’s life, a particular event that occurred in their life, or their family and friends. They can even sometimes be shorter than a whole book. Usually, celebrities and other famous individuals have autobiographies or biographies written about them but less well known and even completely unknown individuals can also be interesting, informative or entertaining due to a particular experience they have had.

The opening paragraph of Chapter 1 of David Rigg’s biography The World of Christopher Marlowe has been provided below.

David Rigg’s biography of Christopher Marlowe begins with introducing Marlowe’s father John Marlowe. As you can see from the extract, creative writing is included along with the factual information being provided. This makes the text not only factual but also interesting. Autobiographies and biographies are normally written both to inform and to entertain their reader. To fulfil both of these purposes, most autobiographies and biographies are normally made up of a mix of factual information and creative writing.

Accounts of famous/historical events are a type of literary non-fiction that can seem similar to an autobiography or biography, however, instead of being written about actual people, they will be written about famous/historical events. Similar to autobiographies and biographies, literary non-fiction about famous/historical events will often be to both inform and entertain a reader; this means that it will include a mix of factual information and creative writing. Sometimes, a fictional character may be included in the text to help illustrate the event taking place. This can be seen in the film Suffragette (2015). The audience follows the protagonist Maud Watt’s through her life during the early years of the 20 th century. Maud Watt’s is a fictional character that is used to help illustrate some of the common problems of the time. She is surrounded by other characters, for example, Emily Wilding Davison who was an actual woman that played a significant part in the suffragette movement.  

Blogs are a common form of literary non-fiction that are written all over the world. Blogs are regularly updated websites or web pages and they can be written by anyone who has access to the internet. Blogs can be run by small groups of people or by an individual. Blogs are similar to diary entries as they tend to contain a more informal, conversational style but, unlike diary entries, they can be written for many different purposes. Examples of different types of blogs are:

  • A book/film review blog
  • A travel log for people visiting different destinations

There are many different types of blogs on the internet than just the ones mentioned above. Some common features of blogs are listed below:

  • The language is often informal and conversational
  • They may not always have a clear audience; it may be aimed at anyone who might be interested
  • They can vary in appearance to create different effects; for example, in size, font colour
  • They often include a lot of images to help grab the reader’s attention
  • They can sometimes include video clips if necessary
  • They often use links to other web pages that include relevant information
  • They are usually written in first person and are often quite personal

There are a numerous number of blogs to look up on the internet if you are interested in reading some for yourself. A lot of companies and organisations also have blogs so they can communicate informally with their audience; this is often a younger audience.

Essays are a creative form of literary non-fiction that are usually written by students or by someone who is considered an expert in their field. University lecturers commonly write essays to express their different ideas and opinions about a certain topic, to make an argument or to compare something; for example, to compare two literary texts. There are many different types of essays but some common features of most essays are:

  • They have a clear structure with an introduction that introduces their idea, a number of paragraphs outlining different points that develop their idea, and a conclusion used to summarise the essay
  • They are written using formal, Standard English and normally include a specialised vocabulary that is normally specific to a certain field of study
  • They develop a line of argument
  • They often include literary devices that are used throughout

An extract taken from Virginia Woolf’s essay How It Strikes a Contemporary (1925) has been provided for you below:

The extract above is just the first two paragraphs of Woolf’s essay. The essay as a whole deals with Woolf exploring the issues that contemporary writers and readers faced during the modernist period. Essays like the one provided can sometimes be difficult to read and it can take two, three or sometimes four readings of an essay before you can properly grasp its content and analyse it successfully. If you are presented with any essays in the exam, then they will normally be a little easier to understand than the one provided. Reading a range of essays from other writers can help to develop your ability in reading essays and also your ability in your own essay writing, which can greatly help you when writing your own essays in the exam.

Feature articles are a form of literary non-fiction that are a type of newspaper or magazine article but rather than appearing as formal and informative, they are usually written in an individual style and have a personal slant. We will discuss the features of feature articles when we go into detail about magazine and newspaper articles in a later chapter.

Travel writing can be a form of literary non-fiction about visiting different places. It can be written as a narrative that is telling a story about a journey or place or it can be written as a blog. Alternatively, travel writing can also appear as a magazine/newspaper article that informs readers about journeys and destinations. Travel writing in magazine/newspaper articles will be much more detailed and formal compared to travel blogs. Some features of travel writing are:

  • It has a purpose to entertain as well as to inform
  • It is usually written using first person narration
  • It is often descriptive and uses a lot of descriptive writing (we will go into detail about descriptive writing in Unit 4 of this course)

  • The story ‘Indigo’ revolves around Gandhi’s struggle for poor peasants of Champaran who were forced to grow indigo. They suffered great injustice due to the landlord system of Birar. 
  • Raj Kumar Shukla – illiterate but determined followed Gandhiji to Lucknow, Cawnpore, Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Patna, Muzzafarpur and then Camparan.
  • Servants at Rajendra Prasad’s residence thought Gandhiji to be an untouchable because of simple living style due to his company of Raj Kumar Shukla.
  • Once the news of Gandhiji’s arrival spread the sharecroppers gathered in large number to meet him
  • He complained to the lawyer for charging a high fee.
  • The champaran district was divided and indians were only allowed to be tenants of the land and not owners and surrender their entire harvest of indigo as rent. 
  • Gandhiji worked hard towards social economic reforms. He taught the villagers the valuable lesson of self reliance by not asking Mr Andrews for help
