4. What else you should know

Izal is widely known for its amazing properties, but, since it’s so complex and powerful, there are also a few safety precautions. First, make sure to keep your homemade Izal out of reach of children, as it can be very dangerous when it’s inhaled, contacts your skin or eyes, or consumed.

Second, remember to not use Izal for anything other than cleaning floors, sinks, drains, toilets, door knobs, garbage cans, counters, and other potentially contaminated areas: for example, the answer to the question: “ Is Izal good for bathing? ” is a strict no, because it can do significant damage to your skin.

Sample Soap Making Business Plan

Soap making business plan.

Have you always thought about launching that dream soap-making business, but clueless as to how to go about it?

Relax! This article will give you insight into what you need to get in place to fully launch your soap-making business.

First things first, you want to make sure you are very sure this business is perfect for you. You do not want to jump right in without getting acquainted with what will be required to make this business successful.

Here is a sample business plan for starting a soap manufacturing business.

This is why this article has highlighted below several things you must consider before starting up right away.

Step 1: Learn About Soap Making

Before starting up your own soap-making business, you must learn how to make soap. If you really want to succeed in this business, you must learn the skills needed for making soap. Learn the process of making soap, including every detail about the business. Preferably, learn from a reputable soap-making business, watch online tutorials, read books, attend seminars, and get yourself prepared to fully launching your own business.

Step 2: Create your Unique Formula

To make a basic soap, you do not require much. You only need a few ingredients for the recipe. However, you could make many different soaps just by tweaking the formula. For you to create your own unique soap, you may have to make experiments with many different soap ingredients such as color, scents, moisturizers, etc just to get that desired unique formula.

But first, you will have to determine your niche in this line of business. There are several niches out there in the soap-making business. A good way to find out your niche is to conduct a market survey to determine what your target market is interested in.

Step 3: Get the Equipment and Ingredients

You will need to get the necessary equipment and ingredients for making your soap formula. There are several basic tools and ingredients you must possess to run your business. They include:

  • Mixing kettle
  • Metallic stamp for labeling
  • Cutting machine
  • Trimming machine
  • Measuring cups
  • Safety gloves
  • Plastic or stainless spoon, etc.

Step 4: Develop your Brand

Part of developing your brand has been discussed above, which includes carrying out a thorough market survey to know what your target market really wants. Put yourself in the shoes of your prospective customers who are part of your target market, and develop your brand to suit their needs.

For example, if your market is targeted at people whose concern is on healthy living and natural products, your soaps will have to be created with all-natural ingredients free of anything artificial.

Also, you will have to create a very unique and catchy soap brand name . Make sure to be creative with this aspect as regards the brand name, the logo design, the packaging, and every other detail that will help make your brand unique and desirable.

Step 5: Locate Buyers

Once you have fully developed your soap making the business into your desired brand, the next thing to worry about is how to sell your product, and who to sell it to. There are several channels through which you could sell your soap such as wholesalers (if you will be producing very large quantities) and retailers.

You could start by selling your product to friends and relatives at good prices. Your goal at this initial stage should not be centered on profit-making, rather on the quality of your soap. This is the time to offer your product to your friends and relatives for free sample tests to get genuine feedback.

Step 6: Set up your Business

Now is the time to set up your business. Setting up your business involves getting a good space large enough for your soap-making operation. You may start by leasing a space before you have enough cash to get your own space.

You will require enough capital to fully startup your soap-making business. The startup capital for starting up differs from one location to the other, and it also depends on other factors such as the scale, cost of equipment, leasing, etc.

To get close to an accurate figure regarding how much you will need to fully start up your business, you will have to carry out a feasibility study on the soap-making business.

Also, you must make sure of fulfilling all the legal requirements for starting up your soap-making business in your desired location.

Step 7: Pricing

Pricing is essential to your soap-making business.

As soon as you make your products available in the market, you want to do well to make sure you are selling at the right prices. You do not want to start by underselling your brand or selling at prices far higher than what is reasonable.

Make sure to have a realistic and reasonable price for your products. A good way to determine product price is by taking note of the cost of making one product and then setting the profit margin reasonably.

Step 8: Promote your Business

Promote, promote, promote!!! You may have a great product, but your target market may not get to know how great it is if you fail to promote your brand. Take your products to your customers. Create a website; create social media accounts for your brand just to reach your target market.

Powdery soap is mostly used in the washing of cloth, mopping floors, and many other applications that the user might deem fit. You are advised to ensure that you keep strictly to the formulation.

GUIDE: HOW TO START A DETERGENT BUSINESS

Same as in the production of laundry soap plus drier and pulverizer (mesh net)

Chemicals and the required quantity Palm kernel oil or fatty acid 4 LITRES Caustic soda 1 KG Soda ash 2 KG Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) ½ LITRES Ammonium 30 MILI LITRES (MLS) Industrial salt (Na2CO3) 150 MLS Colorant TO TASTE Perfume TO TASTE Foaming agent 250 MLS Sulphuric acid 30 MLS

Prepare the caustic soda solution as described in the production of laundry soap and ensure that the density is at the stated value. Allow standing for three days (72 hrs) minimum. You can allow it to stand for more than three days if you want but should not use it when it is not up to 3 days. The reason why some powdery detergent is corrosive is that the caustic soda did not blend long enough in water before starting the production process. Add the soda ash to the caustic soda solution and stir very well until uniformly blended Pour the palm kernel oil into the mixture and add the colorant while stirring vigorously (only in a clockwise direction) till it blends well. Measure out the required quantity of all the chemicals Put the SLES into the mixer and add little water to it Stir to smoothness To the solution above add 500 grams of CDEA and continue stirring to smooth. Add water occasionally as the need arises. Put the STPP in separate water and stir well Add the STPP solution into the mixer and continue stirring Dissolve the salt in a little amount of water and add to the mixer while continuing stirring Add the perfume and continue stirring Package the detergent in the right containers and start smiling at the bank. These materials and chemicals can be easily gotten in every state. To get it easily, just go to a secondary school and ask any of the science teachers or the principal where they buy their laboratory equipment and chemicals (acid, base, and salt) from. It is most likely those people will sell these chemicals or know those who sell around. I know some folks might be saying “well, I don’t have money to start up these businesses”.

Actually, you may be right and at the same time wrong. You need money to start up a business sure! But you can start up a business using other people’s money as well (OPM). A friend has organized a seminar in a polytechnic that fetched him close to 400k without spending a dime.

If I mention the name of the school, some people might know. All he did was present seminar materials and what he had to offer to the school SUG body.

They took over from there seeing he had something to offer and did the publicity on his behalf, got a hall for him, provided the sound system, and other logistics.

He simply went with my crew and did the talking and demonstration. At the end of the day, students paid for the seminar materials, the SUG got their commission, and he went smiling to the bank.

You too can start from there.

Production of Izal Germicide: How To Produce Izal Antiseptic

Let’s take a quick look at what a germicide is together. A germicide is any type of product that is designed to kill germs and bacteria on different types of surfaces. Many household cleaning products are formulated to function as a germicide. Over the years, many uses of germicide products have come into common use. HOW TO MAKE IZAL Some involve the utilization of basic germicidal and antibacterial products as a way of minimizing the chances of spreading colds or other forms of illness. Wherever there are people, there are bacteria. Since bacteria are invisible to the Unclad eye, their presence is usually unsuspected. Germicide, therefore, helps to rid the area of bacteria and germs that have the potential to cause harm to humans and other living things.

Germicide can be used to clean surfaces such as:

-Toilet -Sinks -Floors -Drains -Door Knobs -Counters and -Garbage cans, etc.

Summarily, germicides as disinfectants aid in maintaining a clean environment to help prevent the spread of harmful bacteria that may cause infections.

PLACES GERMICIDES CAN BE USED

Izal Booster Germicide as a disinfectant can be used in the:

¤Hospitals ¤Homes ¤Eateries, etc

PRODUCTION OF IZAL DISINFECTANT

The composition of the izal formulation (Ingredients Used in Making of Izal at Home – 10 Litres) Texapon…..2 tin milk cups Pine oil……4 tin milk cups Phenol……4 tin milk cups Lysol……..4 tin milk cups Izal booster.. .4 tin milk cups Carbolic Acid…4 tin milk cups Izal concentrate…..4 tin milk cup Whitener………2 tin milk cup Water…………5 liters

These are the basic chemical materials for izal production but what is izal concentrate?

I promised to explain our izal production process in units. Looking at the formula above, you notice that the texapon used is 2 cups, Whitner 2 cups, and our water is 5 liters while other ones are 4 cups each. Now, explaining this in units, I would say:

Texapon————2 units Pine oil————-4 units Phenol————-4 units Lysol—————4 units Carbolic acid——4 units Izal concentrate—4 units Izal booster——–4 units Whitener———–2 units Water—————5 units

From the above, let’s use texapon as our determinant factor. As in, the quantity of texapon to determine the quantity of other active ingredients of izal production and the total volume of the final product.

Here, you can use anything as your measurement (measuring tool). For instance, if you choose to use a spoon as your measurement, it means texapon is 2 spoons, whitener 2 spoons, then the rest 4 spoons.

If you now choose to use a bucket, it means two of those buckets of texapon, 2 buckets of whitener, and 4 buckets of the rest.

PREPARATION OF IZAL GERMICIDE

-Pour the Texapon into a bowl -Add the pine oil and stir very well -Add the phenol and stir -Add the Lysol and stir -Add the booster and stir -Add 3 liters of water and stir -Use some quantity of water to dilute the carbolic acid before you add it to the mixture -Add the izal concentrate and stir -Also, use some water to dilute the whitener before you add it to the mixture and stir it together -Pour the remaining water and stir properly

Finally, package the product for use or sale.

You can get all the materials(chemical) for making izal in Nigeria at the Ojota chemical market. With just 5k you can start something, at least, on a small scale. For the plastic to use, the packaging is very important, you may just get any attractive plastic and have your own well-designed stickers on it. If you are buoyant enough, you may approach any plastic company for a customized one.

The function of all the chemicals used in the production of germicide.

On a good day, almost all the materials for izal production are disinfectants, except for a few like an izal booster, izal soap, and izal whitener. The izal booster is just to increase the quantity of your product while the whitener is to give it that white color look. So, the combination of all of the chemicals (antiseptics or disinfectant) is what gives you a powerful germicide.

Quickly, I will like to define An antiseptic as any chemical combination or solution that helps or has the ability to prevent infection by preventing the growth of micro-organisms. I have explained earlier in our germicide lesson that some bacteria are harmful while some are helpful.

SEE:  8 Important Ideas To Becoming Self Employed

These bacteria are everywhere, I mean. Wherever you find human beings, you find them. They are said to be ‘micro’ because they are so small that they can’t be seen with the unclad (Unclad) eyes. So, our effort here is to get rid of the harmful ones.

Hence, our focus in this Dettol production process will be on how to mix or combine our chemicals in the right proportion to help us learn how to make Dettol liquid handwash.

The composition of Dettol (Antiseptic Ingredients)

Chemical Materials Needed in the Preparation of Dettol (Concentrate)

1. Texapon 2. Pine oil 3. Phenol 4. Chloroxylenol 5. IPA (Isopropanol) 6. Dettol colorant 7. Water

You notice some of the active chemicals used in the production of Dettol disinfectant (and germicide) are also mentioned here.

Materials And Quantity Needed For Production Of 1 Litre Of Antiseptic (Dettol Formula)

(Using tin milk cup as our measuring ingredients for making Dettol)

1. Texapon……..1/2 tin milk cup of texapon 2.Pine oil……..1 tin milk cup 3. Phenol………1 tin milk cup 4. Chloroxylenol…..1/2 tin milk cup 5. IPA (Isopropanol)…2 tin milk cups 6. Dettol colorant…As desired or quantity that will give you the exact color of Dettol (brown yellow). 7. Water………3 tin milk cups

UPDATED:   10 Small Business Ideas For Stay At Home Moms

The chemical composition of Dettol ingredients in percentage as follows:

Texapon……. 5 0/0 percent Pine oil………9 o/0 Phenol……….9 o/0 Chloroxylenol….4.5 0/o IPA (Isopropanol)…12 o/0

To produce Dettol disinfectant: method of preparation of Dettol

Step 1. Turn the texapon into an empty bowl Step 2. Add the pine oil and stir properly Step 3. Add the phenol and stir also Step 4. Add the chloroxylenol and stir properly Step 5. Add the IPA (isopropanol) and stir thoroughly Step 6. Finally, add water to the content and stir properly.

The color should be the last thing to add. Just dissolve the color in water and add slowly till you obtain your desired color.

Now, you have just produced your own Dettol antiseptic. Go and buy Dettol no more!

Almost every average household has one form of antiseptic or the other to satisfy a diverse collection of sanitary needs. From disinfecting toilet seats to ridding bathing water of bad germs and purifying various items, Dettol and other antiseptics are just ideal.

Probably you intend to go into the production of antiseptics and you are like, ‘the required capital is usually on the high side’, ‘top-level education is required since it involves the use of chemicals, or ‘the return on investment is petty’.

Well, what if I told you that you are capitally wrong! First, it does not cost much to start the production of antiseptic, you do not need any specialized knowledge to go into the business, and the profit you stand to make can be overwhelming or perhaps you should take statistics of how many people regularly buy antiseptics, then you would realize.

And if you doubt me, go find out how much companies like Unilever make from sales of antiseptics like Dettol.

I must, however, emphasize that while you have great prospects of making it big in the industry, you must as well take precautions to avoid wastage and shortages that would increase your cost of production.

To be on the safe end of starting this business, some step by step approach on how to produce antiseptic.

We break the article into two parts. First of all, an introduction of all the items that are required in the process, and the production procedures.

  • Required Items
  • Texapon —It is the agent that causes the antiseptic to foam. It a substance that acts as a detergent in that it attacks germs by attaching its hydrophilic and hydrophobic units to the germ and extracts it from the water or any substance. It enhances the dissolution of non-polar substances such as fats and oil.
  • Phenol —It’s an aromatic organic compound that has a romantic smell and is colorless. It’s also called hydroxybenzene, and it serves to disinfect impure substances and is used in reduced concentration. It is safe to use as a mouth disinfectant as well.
  • Chloroxylenol— While this chemical is corrosive and should be handled with so much caution, it is the key ingredient in the Dettol production formula. It fights the bacteria in the substance you apply the Dettol on. I should emphasize that it’s a chemical that should be dealt with with much care, and in any eventuality that it causes harm, seek medical advice ASAP.
  • Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) —It is this ingredient that enables Dettol to serve to kill germs that contaminate an injury, as it gives the antiseptic the ability to fight bacteria and fungi. It is also a colorless organic compound under the Alkanol homologous series.
  • Pine Oil —This ingredient has a sweet smell and functions as a disinfectant. It gives the impression of a dense white fume in the water when Dettol is poured into it. I’m sure you know what I am talking about.
  • Coloring Agent —This is what gives the antiseptic the color it retains after production, you can color as you wish. Usually, a small quantity would do.
  • Water —It is a colorless liquid, that is odorless and tasteless. Of course, you know that already! Well, just for the records.
  • Production Procedures and Measurement (We are assuming you intend to produce 10 Liters Dettol)
  • Measure out a quarter of a liter of Texapon, and turn it into an empty container.
  • Add half a liter of Pine oil into the Texapon and mix very well.
  • Add a quarter of a liter of Phenol into the mixture and stir very well.
  • Add half a liter of Chloroxylenol into the container and mix very well.
  • Add water, about 2 liters into the mixture and mix the entire thing well.
  • Pour in the Isopropyl alcohol, about 6 liters, and continue the mixing.
  • Before adding the coloring agent, ensure to first dissolve it in water and stir it well. After thoroughly stirring it, you can pour it into the antiseptic mixture. And this is the final step.

Note that suppose you intend to produce 20 liters of Dettol, all you need do is double the quantities of the ingredients you used; and this applies when you intend to produce less.

Precautions When Handling Antiseptics

This article would be incomplete if a cautionary note is not included to guide prospective entrepreneurs that are looking into going into the production of antiseptics.

You must use the product for external purposes only, avoid its contact with sensitive organs such as the eyes, the tongue, and ensure not to inhale it. The reagents in the antiseptic have the capacity to cause injuries to animals if not handled carefully.

Finally, it is important to recognize the place of effective advertisement in the success of any startup. Your marketing power depends on how well you promote your business either through social media or traditional mouth-to-mouth advertisements.

FOR MARKETING, YOU CAN START WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD, CHURCH, WORKPLACE, MOTOR PARK, OR HOUSE-TO-HOUSE MARKETING. ALSO, NOTE THAT YOU WILL NEED GOVERNMENT APPROVAL TO ADD CREDENCE TO YOUR PRODUCTS.

Makes approximately 5 liters of disinfectant

Setting up the Workspace

Step 1 Put on protective googles, a dust mask, and disposable plastic gloves.

  • Keep a fully stocked first aid kit nearby in case you need to treat minor chemical burns. Bear in mind that serious burns should be treated by a doctor and may need to be neutralized.
  • Working with these chemicals is not advised if you have asthma or other breathing problems. [2] X Research source

Step 2 Set up your workspace in a well-ventilated area.

  • Don't work near open flames. These chemicals are highly flammable.
  • Choose a workspace that children can't access. Store unused chemicals out of reach of children. [3] X Research source

Step 3 Use proper lab equipment, mixing utensils, and well-packaged chemicals.

  • If you don't have a good working knowledge of a basic lab setup or previous experience mixing chemicals together, you may want to reconsider this project.

Mixing the Ingredients

Step 1 Combine Texapon and water in a plastic bucket.

  • The mixture will get slightly frothy as you stir it.
  • Texapon is a sodium laureth sulfate frequently used in detergents, soaps, and shampoos. It is usually white and comes in crystal, flake, or powder form.
  • Texapon can severely irritate the skin, eyes, lungs, and nasal passageways.

Step 2 Add the Phenol to the mixture and stir thoroughly.

  • Phenol is commercially available in liquid form and is commonly used in disinfectants and other consumer products. It's usually clear or light yellow in color.
  • Phenol can cause respiratory irritation, headaches, and eye irritation. Contact with skin can cause chemical burns. [6] X Trustworthy Source Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Main public health institute for the US, run by the Dept. of Health and Human Services Go to source

Step 4 Pour the carbolic acid into the mixture and keep stirring.

  • Carbolic acid is highly corrosive and toxic. Breathing in the vapors can damage the upper respiratory tract and skin contact may cause chemical burns. [9] X Research source

Step 5 Stir in the pine oil.

  • Pine oil is a highly concentrated essential oil obtained from pine trees. It is commonly used as a germicide and disinfectant in commercial products. [11] X Research source

Step 6 Add the Izal booster to the mixture.

  • Izal booster is a milky-looking chemical that boosts the properties of the other chemicals.

Step 7 Pour the Izal concentrate into the bucket and keep stirring.

  • Izal concentrate is a light pink liquid and highly irritating to the skin and mucus membranes.

Step 8 Measure out the whitener and stir it into the mixture.

  • Essentially, this substance binds all of the ingredients in the mixture together and creates a whitening effect on surfaces. It's usually sold in powder or tablet form.

Straining and Storing the Mixture

Step 1 Pour the Izal through a fine mesh strainer to remove particles.

  • Izal is frequently used to disinfect commercial spaces like hospitals, hotels, restaurants, offices, and schools.
  • Wear plastic gloves when cleaning with Izal to protect your skin.

Step 3 Store any leftover solution in heavy-duty plastic containers.

It serves as a blueprint for the entire production cycle, guiding decision-making and resource allocation. The production plan considers factors such as demand forecasting, capacity planning, inventory management, and quality assurance to ensure efficient operations and optimal customer satisfaction.

Why is a Production Plan Important in a Business Plan?

The inclusion of a production plan in a business plan is vital for several reasons. First and foremost, it provides a clear roadmap for business operations, helping entrepreneurs and managers make informed decisions related to production processes. A well-developed production plan ensures that resources are utilised efficiently, minimising wastage and optimising productivity.

Additionally, a production plan allows businesses to align their production capabilities with customer demand. Demand Forecasting

Demand forecasting is a critical aspect of production planning. By analysing historical data, market trends, and customer behaviour, businesses can predict future demand for their products or services. Accurate demand forecasting allows companies to optimise inventory levels, plan production capacity, and ensure timely delivery to customers.

One approach to demand forecasting is quantitative analysis, which involves analysing historical sales data to identify patterns and make predictions. Another approach is qualitative analysis, which incorporates market research, customer surveys, and expert opinions to gauge demand fluctuations. By combining both methods, businesses can develop a robust demand forecast, minimising the risk of underproduction or overproduction. Utilising a free notion template for demand forecasting can further streamline this process, allowing businesses to organise and analyse both quantitative and qualitative data efficiently in one centralised location.

Capacity Planning

Capacity planning involves determining the optimal production capacity required to meet projected demand. This includes assessing the production capabilities of existing resources, such as machinery, equipment, and labour, and identifying any gaps that need to be addressed. By conducting a thorough capacity analysis, businesses can ensure that their production capacity aligns with customer demand, avoiding bottlenecks or excess capacity.

An effective capacity plan takes into account factors such as production cycle times, labour availability, equipment maintenance, and production lead times. It helps businesses allocate resources efficiently, minimise production delays, and maintain a consistent level of output to meet customer expectations.

Inventory Management

Efficient inventory management is crucial for a successful production plan. It involves balancing the cost of holding inventory with the risk of stockouts. By maintaining optimal inventory levels, businesses can reduce carrying costs while ensuring that sufficient stock is available to fulfil customer orders.

Inventory management techniques, such as the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model and Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory system, help businesses strike the right balance between inventory investment and customer demand. These methods consider factors such as order frequency, lead time, and carrying costs to optimise inventory levels and minimise the risk of excess or insufficient stock.

Resource Allocation

Resource allocation plays a pivotal role in a production plan. It involves assigning available resources, such as labour, materials, and equipment, to specific production tasks or projects. Effective resource allocation ensures that resources are utilised optimally, avoiding underutilisation or overutilisation.

To allocate resources efficiently, businesses must consider factors such as skill requirements, resource availability, project timelines, and cost constraints. By conducting a thorough resource analysis and implementing resource allocation strategies, businesses can streamline production processes, minimise bottlenecks, and maximise productivity.

Quality Assurance

Maintaining high-quality standards is essential for any production plan. Quality assurance involves implementing measures to monitor and control the quality of products or services throughout the production process. By adhering to quality standards and conducting regular inspections, businesses can minimise defects, ensure customer satisfaction, and build a positive brand reputation.

Quality assurance techniques, such as Total Quality Management (TQM) and Six Sigma , help businesses identify and rectify any quality-related issues. These methodologies involve continuous monitoring, process improvement, and employee training to enhance product quality and overall operational efficiency.

In addition to the core components of a production plan, it's also important for businesses to consider the broader aspects of their business strategy, including marketing and advertising. Understanding the costs and returns of different marketing approaches is crucial for comprehensive business planning. For instance, direct response advertising costs can vary significantly, but they offer the advantage of measurable responses from potential customers. This type of advertising can be a valuable strategy for businesses looking to directly engage with their target audience and track the effectiveness of their marketing efforts.

Strategies for Developing an Effective Production Plan

Developing an effective production plan requires implementing various strategies and best practices. By incorporating these strategies into the production planning process, businesses can optimise operations and drive success. Let's explore some key strategies in detail.

Lean Manufacturing

Lean manufacturing is a systematic Seamless Searches approach aimed at eliminating waste and improving efficiency in production processes. It emphasises the concept of continuous improvement and focuses on creating value for the customer while minimising non-value-added activities.

By adopting lean manufacturing principles, such as just-in-time production, standardised work processes, and visual management, businesses can streamline operations, reduce lead times, and eliminate unnecessary costs. Lean manufacturing not only improves productivity but also enhances product quality and customer satisfaction.

Just-in-Time (JIT) Inventory

Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory is a strategy that aims to minimise inventory levels by receiving goods or materials just when they are needed for production. This strategy eliminates the need for excess inventory storage, reducing carrying costs and the risk of obsolete inventory.

By implementing a JIT inventory system, businesses can optimise cash flow, reduce storage space requirements, and improve overall supply chain efficiency. However, it requires robust coordination with suppliers, accurate demand forecasting, and efficient logistics management to ensure timely delivery of materials.

Automation and Technology Integration

Automation and technology integration play a crucial role in modern production planning, as well as mobile app development . By leveraging technology, businesses can streamline processes, enhance productivity, and reduce human error. Automation can be implemented in various aspects of production, including material handling, assembly, testing, and quality control.

The History of Izal – Joan Jones – 7th March 2016

An Izal Toilet Roll.

In the overall story of the vast Newton Chambers empire, to mention only the firm’s Izal products would just be scratching the surface – which the company’s toilet paper did, literally.

But to get to the bottom of local historian Joan Jones’s fascinating presentation about the history of the Chapeltown conglomerate, the main focus was indeed on the Izal products, from disinfectant to coal tar soap, which became household names for most of the 20th century.

And yet the Izal brand of no fewer than 137 different products, used in hospitals and homes throughout the world in their heyday, was in reality just a by-product of Newton Chambers’s more industrial origins.

George Newton and Thomas Chambers were partners in the Phoenix Foundry, and along with financier Henry Longden they signed an initial 21-year lease in 1793 with Earl Fitzwilliam, the landowner, to extract coal and ironstone from the Thorncliffe Valley. The company would later expand into the production of ironware, heavy machinery such as dragline excavators, and even military tanks.

It was a hundred years after coal production began that the trade name Izal was registered. It was, basically, a hugely successful marketing campaign – orchestrated by chief salesman Joseph Godber, who was said to possess ‘a missionary zeal’ – to sell any product that could be made from or with carbolic acid, a by-product of the Newton Chambers coking ovens at Rockingham Colliery, five miles away near Birdwell.

The company engaged an analytical chemist to explore the possibility of using coal oil, which was claimed to have antiseptic qualities but would not mix with water, and by adding emulsifiers they were able to disperse the oil. The resulting liquid was trialled in hospitals across the land, and full page adverts were placed in publications such as The Times and London Illustrated News.

Godber travelled as far afield as South Africa, Canada, the USA, India, the Far East and Egypt to promote the products.

W. Heath Robinson, the renowned cartoonist of the day who thought up laughingly complicated machines for achieving simple objectives, was recruited in the 1920s and 1930s to draw a series of illustrations of various aspects of production, in the form of posters and postcards.

The scratchy toilet paper, impregnated with Izal disinfectant and every sheet printed with the legend ‘Now wash your hands’ (not to mention, in some cases, ‘Property of British Railways’ if I remember correctly), was at first given away to local authorities who bought bulk supplies of hygiene products, before being marketed as a commodity in its own right.

During the Second World War, Izal produced sheets of toilet paper overprinted with cartoon illustrations of Adolf Hitler, which were popular with customers but frowned upon by the government because ‘it wasn’t really the British thing to do.’

Some of Izal’s health giving claims, and the diseases it would help prevent, might seem rather far fetched by today’s advertising standards. Restrictions on the use of poisons, and increased competition from more modern products, lessened Izal’s market dominance, although it was still a major profit maker for Newton Chambers until the 1970s.

The company, which had once employed 8,000 people, was sold off and split up, although the Izal factory continued to be run until 1981 by Sterling Health, who also bought the Ronseal DIY brand which still survives at Chapeltown.

But in the end, production of Izal medicated toilet paper at the North Sheffield factory fell victim to the accountants’ bottom line, as the bottoms of Britain opted for something a little more comfortable.

Orange County pushes film incentives plan forward

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County leaders are moving forward with a plan to create incentives for filming and producing movies in central Florida.

On Tuesday, the board of commissioners voted unanimously to bring experts together to make recommendations on what these film production tax incentives could look like.

What You Need To Know

On tuesday, orange county commissioners voted unanimously to bring experts together to make recommendations on what film production tax incentives could look like the film production community called the commission’s decision a game changer that could help create jobs, promote local businesses and hotel stays there’s already filming locations in orange county ready to go for potential productions.

Film Florida Executive Director John Lux will be one of the one of the members of the workgroup, collaborating with Orange County on this proposed plan.

He says since 2016, when the last statewide film incentive program ended, Florida has lost more than 100 major feature film and television series that would’ve brought more than $2 billion to local economies. He says about $150 million would have been in Orange County.

“There has been a lot of loss and a lot of struggles for people that work in the industry over the last decade,” said Lux. “We’re really excited the county commission has taken this first step to seriously consider proposals.”

The film production community called the commission’s decision a game changer that could help create jobs, promote local businesses and hotel stays.

“It’s very exciting,” said Kimberly DiPersia, artistic director for All The Lines Studio and Incubator LLC in Orlando. “I really hope that they continue forward with it. If we get a film incentive that encourages us to get these films produced and we have local crew and talent that we can tap into, that creates employment right away.”

In addition to producing films, DiPersia’s studio develops screenwriters, actors, and directors through workshops. They also hold events to stage readings of original screenplays written by local writers.

DiPersia, who has worked to produce films for Netflix, Amazon and Showtime, says many artists and crew currently travel out of state for other jobs. She says the potential incentives can help keep them in the community.

“It creates opportunities for them to be here, to devote themselves to the industry, gain more experience,” she said.

There’s already filming locations in Orange County ready to go for potential productions.

Tucked away inside the Oviedo Mall, Studio Lot Orlando offers pre-made sets like classrooms, hospital rooms, bars or police departments.

Co-owner Justine Renee says she recently worked on a TV series with a $100,000 budget, which she says is still “low budget.” She hopes that film incentives would bring even higher budget productions into town.

“Just like Disney came in years and years ago (...) Well, the film industry can come in and enhance the economy even more,” said Renee. “That cast and that crew needs to eat. They need a place to stay.”

Renee also says filming in Florida offers unique opportunities for productions.

“Orlando gives a beautiful look for film and TV that L.A. and a lot of other places don’t have to offer,” she said. “We have so much greenery, which is so vibrant. I think it’s a really cool place, and it could even look like a lot of countries.”

Oil Companies Expand Offshore Drilling, Pointing to Energy Needs

Shell and others say they plan to drill for oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico in part because doing so releases fewer greenhouse gases than drilling on land.

Reporting from Shell’s Appomattox offshore platform, New Orleans, Houston and Los Angeles

About 80 miles southeast of Louisiana’s coast, 100,000 metric tons of steel floats in the Gulf of Mexico, an emblem of the hopes of oil and gas companies.

This hulk of metal, a deepwater platform called Appomattox and owned by Shell, collects the oil and gas that rigs tap from reservoirs thousands of feet below the seafloor. Equipment on the platform pipes that fuel to shore.

Political and corporate leaders have pledged to reduce planet-warming emissions to net-zero by 2050. But oil companies like Shell are betting that the world will need oil and gas for decades to come. To serve that demand, they are expanding offshore oil and gas drilling into deeper and deeper waters, especially here in the Gulf of Mexico.

Offshore production, oil executives argue, is not only crucial to power cars, trucks and power plants but also better for the planet than drilling on land. That’s because such operations emit far less of the greenhouse gases that are warming the planet than producing the same amount of oil and gas on land, according to industry estimates.

“The world will continue to need oil, by the way, even in 2050,” Wael Sawan, chief executive of Shell, said in a recent interview. “It will have to be lower and lower emissions.”

The greenhouse gas emissions associated with extracting a barrel of oil from the Gulf of Mexico are as much as a third lower than emissions from producing a barrel of oil from fields on U.S. soil, according to a report published last year by the National Ocean Industries Association , an industry group for offshore oil, gas and wind businesses. (Those numbers do not include the emissions created when fossil fuels are burned in engines or power plants, which are much greater than emissions from producing and refining oil and gas.)

Oil production in the Gulf of Mexico fell for several years after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion caused the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history. But the gulf’s oil output has been rising over the last decade. The renewed interest in offshore production is part of a larger trend: The United States has recently set records for oil production, extracting more crude than any other country.

Booming oil and gas production in the United States has alarmed climate activists and scientists who want the energy industry to pivot more quickly to cleaner fuels and technologies like wind and solar power and electric vehicles.

“We’re not talking about stopping oil production today,” said Brettny Hardy, a senior lawyer in the Oceans Program at Earthjustice, a nonprofit environmental law organization. “But no matter how you look at it, there’s a really dire need to accelerate this shift to clean energy. The things the industry is doing now is not going to help that transition.”

To many environmentalists, offshore fossil fuel production’s potential for disaster is significant. The spill caused by the Deepwater Horizon rig , which was operated by BP, resulted in significant damage to marine life, the fishing industry and the Gulf of Mexico’s beaches.

The spill helped bring attention to Rice’s whale , which lives only in the Gulf of Mexico and is classified by the federal government as an endangered species. Fewer than 100 of these whales are left because of incidents like the Deepwater Horizon spill and collisions with vessels.

“The concern and worry is there for the right reasons because we have been burned once because of Deepwater Horizon,” said Najmedin Meshkati, a professor of engineering at the University of Southern California who served on a National Academies committee that studied that spill.

The Biden administration had planned to scale back lease sales for oil drilling in the gulf, which environmentalists said would help protect Rice’s whales. In August, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management reduced the area available for leases from 73 million acres to 67 million acres.

But in November, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit rejected the administration’s plans. A month later, oil companies offered $382 million for the right to drill for more oil and gas.

Oil executives say offshore oil operations are far less dangerous now thanks to advances in technology and improvements in standards and regulations. “Offshore oil and natural gas exploration and production is the safest it’s ever been,” said Holly Hopkins, vice president of upstream policy at the American Petroleum Institute, a trade group.

Energy companies favor drilling in the gulf because there is a lot of oil and gas there, especially under very deep waters. The number of deep water platforms have grown dramatically over the last three decades, while those in shallow waters have declined, according to the American Petroleum Institute.

Federal government analysts estimate that oil production in the Gulf of Mexico will grow through 2027. Natural gas production in the gulf is expected to largely remain flat through the early 2030s.

Shell is the biggest oil and gas producer in the region’s waters. Its outsize presence in the gulf is on display at Appomattox, which has a displacement bigger than the world’s largest aircraft carrier, according to the company.

The platform was brought online in 2019 and can house up to 180 people. It stays in place as ships drill wells near it and connect those wells by pipe to the platform, where equipment separates oil, natural gas and water.

Shell recently launched a smaller floating platform, the Whale, which can house up to 60 people. Another unit, Sparta, is under development. In all, Shell, a London-based global energy giant, operates nine active platforms — including four with built-in drill rigs — in the Gulf of Mexico.

On a reporter’s recent visit to Appomattox, about 130 people were working on board, including oil and gas engineers, cooks, janitors, a medic and laundry facility operators who keep washers and dryers spinning 24 hours a day.

Crews live on the platform for 14 consecutive days, working 12-hour shifts. They return to homes across the world for two weeks, before coming back for another 14-day stint.

There is a sense of pride among those aboard, though they recognize that many people think their industry is destroying the planet.

“There is another side that people don’t talk about,” said Matt Flanakin, a ballast control operator on Appomattox for Shell. “We know there’s a need to reduce carbon emissions. But we still need fossil fuels.”

The platform floats on the deep blue waters with little else in sight. On occasion, a drill rig ship appears in the distance. These vessels are scouring the seafloor for sources of oil.

The platforms create artificial reefs that attract fish and dolphin pods to Appomattox, said Rich Howe, executive vice president of Shell’s global deepwater business.

Shell is not alone in expanding its operations offshore. BP, Chevron and other energy giants are also expanding or planning to expand operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

“This is the cradle of global deepwater,” Mr. Howe said. “It’s where a lot of the technologies were invented.”

The gulf has an extensive network of pipelines and equipment that helps deliver the oil and gas directly to onshore facilities with little processing through pipelines. That makes extracting oil and gas from underground reservoirs in the gulf more efficient, ultimately helping to produce less emissions.

Technology has also reduced the need for as many offshore workers, who are flown by helicopter to platforms and drill rigs. Some control room operators work remotely onshore. And the companies say they are minimizing the amount of natural gas they burn off during a process called “flaring.”

“We want it to be as secure, affordable and as low-carbon as it can be,” said Andy Krieger, a senior vice president for the Gulf of Mexico and Canada at BP, which has five platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

But plans by oil giants, especially those based in Europe, to invest in offshore production strike some climate experts as a retreat from the companies’ renewable-energy investments in recent years.

Mr. Sawan, the Shell chief executive, is clear that the company should focus on the businesses it knows best, a category that includes oil, natural gas and hydrogen. He said it should let other companies, including businesses with which Shell has financial and commercial relationships, develop renewable sources like solar power.

That doesn’t mean Shell is uninterested in newer parts of the energy sector, he added. He singled out electric vehicle charging as an area where his company plans to expand. To that end, Shell recently announced that it would close 1,000 gasoline stations, or about 2 percent of its retail presence, in 2024 and 2025 and expand its electric vehicle charging network to 200,000 public charging points globally by 2030, from about 55,000 now.

“At the end of the day,” Mr. Sawan said at a recent energy conference in Houston, “the real intent here is to be able to bring that multidimensional nature of the energy transition and move this dialogue that seems to fixate on ‘Is it oil and gas, or is it solar and wind?’ It’s all, and we need them in abundance.”

This year’s Berkshire Hathaway meeting gave shareholders their best chance yet to hear from the man who will one day take over as CEO when Warren Buffett is gone, but Buffett said for the first time Saturday that Greg Abel should also take responsibility for the company’s investments after he takes over, raising new questions about the succession plan.

Abel put his encyclopedic knowledge of the utility business that he led directly for years on display and delved into railroad operations and potential acquisitions that Berkshire pursued while sharing the stage with Buffett all day . For his part, the 93-year-old billionaire showed investors he is still sharp.

Abel pointed out that it required a major culture shift to get workers at PacifiCorp and the other utilities, who have long focused all their energy on keeping the lights on, to think about shutting the power down at times when the risk that their power lines could spark wildfires is too great. He also said BNSF railroad is working on getting “our cost structure right” after delivering disappointing results.

Succession was clearly top of mind for many of the thousands of people who filled an Omaha arena to listen to the two men after last fall’s death of Vice Chairman Charlie Munger. Buffett, Abel and Ajit Jain, Berkshire’s other top executive who oversees the company’s insurers, reassured investors that Berkshire’s board spends plenty of time focused on “what would happen to the operation if I get hit by a truck,” as Jain put it. Finding the right replacement for any of the three of them will be important.

Previously, Buffett had said that when Abel becomes CEO, investment managers Ted Weschler and Todd Combs, who’s also taken on the responsibility of being Geico’s CEO, would handle Berkshire’s massive portfolio. But Buffett said Saturday that his thinking has evolved, and that “I would probably, knowing Greg, I would leave the capital allocation to Greg.”

And Buffett said because Abel understands businesses so well, he also understands stocks.

But Edward Jones analyst James Shanahan said a good business doesn’t always make a good stock unless you get the timing and position size right, and there is an art to that.

“I think stock picking is hard. I don’t think it’s something you can just start doing and be good at it,” Shanahan said.

Abel does have a history of making multibillion-dollar deals when he was the head of Berkshire’s utility unit for a decade, including the acquisitions of NV Energy and AltaLink , but he’s never been a stock picker. Weschler and Combs might be able to help Abel get the timing right and find opportunities in the stock market, but Buffett didn’t say that Saturday.

Abel just reassured shareholders that “the capital allocation principles that we use today will be maintained.”

“Does that give you more or less confidence post-Buffett? I would say it’s got to give you less — not because it’s a worse circumstance — but because it hasn’t been very transparent and communicated that clearly. You’ve got to start asking, well, what else is going to change?” said Cole Smead with Smead Capital Management.

Abel definitely has the confidence of the CEOs at all of Berkshire’s many varied noninsurance businesses who report to him and ask his advice on any challenges they are facing.

“Greg sees so much more than I do on a daily basis. So his perspective is valued, and his wisdom is something that is such a luxury for all of us to be able to tap into,” said Dan Sheridan, who just became CEO of Brooks Running this year after his predecessor retired. He said Abel is always humble and curious about the business, even while asking challenging questions.

See’s Candies CEO Pat Egan added that Abel reflects all of Berkshire’s core values, with the company’s emphasis on integrity, taking care of customers and strengthening brands, while still giving Berkshire’s subsidiaries the freedom to operate independently.

“He really expects us to know our business, understand the parameters, and to run our business on a day to day basis,” said Tim Baucom, CEO of flooring giant Shaw Industries. “So I feel like I have all the freedom of the world, but with freedom comes responsibility.”

The shareholders who attended the meeting and spent hours shopping and talking with executives at the booths Berkshire subsidiaries set up when they weren’t listening to Buffett and Abel remain confident. Some of them even got the chance to take selfies with Abel, though Buffett no longer tours the exhibit hall in public.

“I think they’ll be fine,” said Michael Grizzard, who made the trip to Omaha from Richmond, Virginia, for the second time. “They’re in good hands, and I think they have a good culture.”

Smead said even Buffett, who is easily one of the greatest investors the world has ever seen, has been having a hard time lately finding good investments big enough to make a difference at Berkshire except for the $135 billion Apple stake that remains its largest investment even after some trimming this year.

So no matter how good an investor Abel is, he will have a hard time finding deals big enough to provide a meaningful boost to Berkshire’s earnings that approached $13 billion in a down first quarter. That challenge is a big part of why Buffett has warned investors not to expect any of the “eye-popping performance” of Berkshire’s past.

But for now, Buffett showed that Abel may not need to take over anytime soon because he looked good and he has long said he has no plans to retire, even if he acknowledged Saturday that he doesn’t have the same energy he used to. CFRA Research analyst Cathy Seifert came away impressed with his stamina.

“There wasn’t anything in that performance that I found worrisome or troubling,” Seifert said.

Aramco's oil field in the Empty Quarter, Shaybah, Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia surprises oil markets by ditching plan to increase production

Blow to Joe Biden, who had hoped to benefit from lower pump prices in an election year

Saudi Arabia has cast doubt on the future of the global oil market after abandoning plans to grow its crude production capacity by 1m barrels a day.

The world’s biggest exporter signalled a big change in policy by ordering the state oil company, Saudi Aramco , to drop plans to expand its maximum production capacity to 13m barrels a day by 2027.

The decision has raised questions over the future of global oil demand growth, weeks after an influential report found that a worldwide peak in crude demand could come before the end of this decade.

The International Energy Agency said that the faltering global economy would slow the world’s growing demand for oil from this year, before the take-up of electric vehicles in the second half of the decade causes consumption to reach a peak.

Riyadh’s order to drop Aramco’s expansion plans is expected to “cause reverberations across the energy complex”, and has already “triggered much speculation on the potential implications on global oil demand over the medium and long term”, according to Biraj Borkhataria, an analyst at RBC Capital.

The move may also help to support the flagging oil markets in a blow for the US president, Joe Biden, who would benefit from weaker pump prices ahead of the election later this year.

The benchmark oil price is about $81 a barrel, narrowly below the average price during 2023, despite the conflict between Israel and Gaza that erupted in October and a significant escalation in attacks on vessels in the Red Sea.

In response, Saudi Arabia and its allies in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) have agreed to hold back more than 1m barrels of oil production a day to help prop up prices.

Saudi Arabia produced about 9m barrels of oil a day last year, enough to meet almost 10% of the world’s demand, but it has the capacity to produce up to 12m. In the past, the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, has claimed that the kingdom could increase its capacity to 20m barrels a day.

after newsletter promotion

The decision to scrap plans to expand its capacity could “suggest that Opec+ is beginning to recognise it has a problem”, according to analysts at Citi. They added that it represented “a huge rethink of strategy and will have wide ramifications to Aramco capital spending, the Gulf supply chain and of course Opec+ oil policy”.

The crown prince called for the multibillion-dollar expansion plan in 2020 in a show of strength as the global oil market began to falter in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
