Freshwater scarcity, the gravest global threat, has notably impeded Pakistan’s development in the absence of proper water management. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Pakistan has been ranked third among the countries facing acute water shortages. Consequently, the impacts of water crises on health, food security, poverty alleviation, and employment have already crippled economic development, engendered social chaos, and created political instability across the country. First and most important, water scarcity has hampered the economic growth of the country. No country’s economy is more water-dependent than that of Pakistan. Pakistan is an agricultural country, with most of its freshwater resources being used for irrigation purposes. Usable water has already depleted enough to create profound economic implications, and further wastage and mismanagement could be responsible for pushing the country into even deeper crises. On top of it, Pakistan also has no mechanism available for storing and using floodwater; consequently, the acute water shortage, coupled with the devastating effects of climate on agriculture, can collapse its economy. On the other hand, water scarcity also disrupts the social well-being of the people. Shortage of fresh water in most urban and rural slums has created multiple health hazards for the people. Moreover, the rural people are primarily dependent on self-sustaining agriculture; thus, the water shortage has directly affected their quality of life and has decreased their level of satisfaction. Furthermore, the water shortage has increased unemployment in the agriculture sector, devising social unrest in the people. Last but not least, water scarcity has created a political divide and instability among the provinces. The mismanagement of water resources and unequal divide among the provinces have created political chaos in the country. As a result, it has fractured the national unity and even affected the cooperation of the provinces on other issues as well. Further water wastage and the shortage could diminish the national agreement among the provinces. Although water scarcity is a significant challenge for Pakistan to contain, it can be controlled by proper management of water resources with immediate policies implementation.

Every year we celebrate World Water Day on 22 March. This day is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance of water and run campaigns to conserve water on Earth. Fresh water is the foundation for life. It is a precious and scarce resource, which in our British climate we often take for granted – although we know that our climate is changing.

Business School Green Impact Team member Amy Fraser shares advice on how we can save water.

A drop in the ocean

Did you know that 97% of the earth’s water is too salty to drink, and another 2% is locked away in ice caps, glaciers and underground? That leaves less than 1% for drinking, agriculture, industry, and nature. Only 0.007% of fresh water is safe for human consumption, according to the World Health Organisation, due to pollution or contamination.

This miniscule amount is shared by more than 7 billion people on the planet. With the population ever growing this resource is becoming even more strained and unfairly distributed. Our current water use is not sustainable.

Be water wise

Across the world innovative technologies are being tested to enhance the quality and more efficient uses of water. What can we do to reduce our individual consumption?

If you try to think of all the ways you use water within your average day, you may only think of the water you drink, use for your shower, or use to water you plants with. However, the average household in the UK uses an enormous 349 litres of water each day.

Water is in everything we use, eat and buy. For example, it takes:

10 litres of water to make a piece of paper
45 litres of water an hour to power appliances in your home
10,000 litres of water to make one pair of jeans
3000 litres of water to make a beef burger
600 litres of water to make a 2 litre bottle of cola
177,297 litres of water to make a car

Reducing consumption can be easier than we think. It is just important to be aware of your water usage and make some very simple changes where possible.

Ways to save water

Here are some simple ideas that could help you reduce your water usage and save you money:

Buy second hand, this could be clothes, cars, furniture – anything! The less products being produced means less water is needed to produce them
Shave 1 minute of your shower time, if every household in the UK took just one minute off one shower every day, it would save £215 million in energy bills a year nationwide.
Reduce your meat consumption. Meat production requires an enormous amount of water, for example it takes between 5,000 and 20,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of meat, compared to the 287 litres of water it takes to produce 1kg of potatoes.
Fix any leaks, or report any you see in public buildings
Curb bad habits – don’t leave the tap running when brushing your teeth or washing. If you do your washing up with a bowl you use on average eight litres of water per bowl wash, compared with an average of 30 litres per running tap wash
Make sure you fill your washing machine or dishwasher to capacity and use Eco settings
Buy from sustainable companies.

5 Ways We Waste Water

Water is a resource that much of the developed world takes for granted, but that many in the developing world struggle to find enough of every day.

That struggle could spread as climate change and other manmade pressures change the availability of water around the globe, and as Earth's population grows ever larger, making the need for that resource even more acute.

The number of humans on the planet could reach 11 billion people by the end of the century, the United Nations projects, up from just over 7 billion people now. Already, more than 2 billion people face a water scarcity each month, but tremendous amounts of water are still wasted. [ What 11 Billion People Mean for Water Scarcity ]

From lawns to flood irrigation, here are five ways that people waste water and some ways to reduce that waste.

Agriculture uses about 70 percent of the available freshwater on the planet. Around the world, most farming relies on flood irrigation — where fields are drenched with water and the excess runs off into nearby streams and rivers.

But flood irrigation wastes tons of water and can pollute waterways with fertilizers, creating dead zones in the ocean (where oxygen is used up and not available for marine creatures) and contributing to algal blooms, which can be toxic to marine life.

Some regions, such as Israel, have moved to highly efficient drip irrigation, which directs water right onto the roots of the plant. But such systems are expensive to implement and don't work for all crops, so many regions will probably shift toward intermediate solutions such as sprinklers, which produce less waste runoff, and covering crops to prevent water evaporation.

Lawns are one of the thirstiest water hogs in cities and towns. While lawns may be appropriate in some areas, most green expanses aren't made of local grasses adapted to grow in the area. And the vast majority of manicured front yards require hefty watering to flourish.

As cities tighten their belts, some areas may require residents to water lawns less frequently or forgo lawn-watering altogether. In particularly arid regions, that may mean a lawn of cacti or rocks, whereas other areas may rip out the water-hungry grass species, such as St. Augustine, and replace them with mixtures of native grasses that guzzle less water. As a bonus, many of these native grasses are softer and less itchy than the old standbys.

Poor crop choice

As the population grows, it doesn't make sense for desert-dwellers to grow thirsty crops such as cotton or raise cattle, which requires much more water than producing an equivalent weight of wheat or potatoes.

As the planet becomes drier, countries will have to shift their economies, so that drier regions produce less thirsty products and wetter regions make water-hungry products such as beef .

Newer plants

But simply switching which crops are produced may not be enough for some regions of the world. Instead, they may need to manipulate the plants own systems' for dealing with drought to increase production.

One way to do that is to water crops less during certain parts of the harvest. The plants then direct more growth into the fruit, away from leaves and stems. That means farmers can grow more crops with less water.

Flushed down the toilet

One of the biggest sources of usable water is treated wastewater. After people brush their teeth, wash their vegetables or flush the toilet, most of that water is treated and sanitized.

While that water isn't really suitable for a big glass of water (unless you're on the International Space Station ), much of it could be put to use watering crops, freeing up freshwater for drinking. Currently, the United States treats 70 percent of its wastewater, but only uses 4 percent of that amount. Increasing the wastewater usage would provide more water for everyone.

Without enough water, the existence of humans, as well as animals, is next to impossible. After fresh air, water is the second most important natural resource for the survival of any living being.

Water is necessary for the survival of each living creature on this planet, be it a small worm, plant, or full-grown tree. Animals and plants cannot survive without water. About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered with water. Unfortunately, only 3% of the water available is freshwater. About two-thirds of the freshwater lies in the form of frozen glaciers and ice caps. The rest of the small portion is available in the form of groundwater and surface water.

We totally depend on water for multiple purposes. Water is used in agriculture for the irrigation of crops. We use water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing, and other domestic purposes. Water is used for recreational activities. In industries, water is used as a coolant, solvent and also used in other manufacturing purposes. Hydroelectricity is generated with the help of water. Water is also used for navigation and transportation of goods. This tells us how water is the most essential component of life and every drop of water is vital for sustenance. Therefore, water conservation is important to save life on this planet.

Shortly after arriving at college, she remembered brushing her teeth next to her new roommate. "What are you doing?" her roommate asked her, gesturing to the tap she'd left on as she brushed. My teacher didn't realize what the big deal was until she looked over at her roommate's tap and saw it was shut off. The roommate came from a dry area in California, my teacher from a water-rich town on the East Coast. By the time they met each other as teens, they'd formed vastly different views on the same resource.

This story illustrates why water can be a tricky resource to talk about. Unless you live in a water-stressed area, it's easy to assume that it doesn't really matter how much of it you use on a daily basis, that the taps will always just keep on flowing.

Of course, there are plenty of good reasons to waste less water at home—no matter where you live. Here, experts unpack a few of the most important and share their favorite strategies for conserving water, beyond just turning off the tap when you brush.

In water-scarce areas where the demand for freshwater outpaces supply, it's easy to understand why wasting the resource is harmful. If you live somewhere that's naturally dry and needs to import its own water supply or is dependent on variable rainfall, you likely place a lot of value on water conservation already.

But if you live in a place that isn't water-stressed (you can find out the overall water risk of your region on this map ), you might be wondering why your personal water use matters so much. This is a question that Newsha Ajami, Ph.D ., a hydrologist and the chief development officer of Berkeley Lab's Earth & Environmental Sciences Area, thinks about a lot.

After more than a dozen years studying water demand and urban water policy, she's come to the conclusion that small household changes can add up to make a huge difference on the community level. Consider, for example, the fact that if your home gets public water, it takes a fair amount of energy to transport that water to you, and whisk it away when you're done with it. And since all the water piped into our homes—from sink to toilet—is potable (ready to drink), it also requires a fair amount of chemicals to clean. Every time we waste water, we waste these resources, too.

Ajami emphasizes that thinking about your water use in the context of this whole system is the key to understanding the importance of your tap.

"The less we use, the less impact we are putting on the environment from the top and the bottom," she tells mbg. If many people in a community reduced the amount of water they used at home, it would significantly lighten that community's water demand. And in the future, as the population continues to grow and climate change threatens water supplies around the country and the world, the more we can reduce the pressure on our local water systems, the better.

It's lost on the way to our homes.

Issues like leaky pipes and outdated infrastructure mean that a fair amount of water is wasted before ever reaching its destination.

Nanda Aung , a corporate water stewardship associate at the World Resources Institute, explains that the amount of water lost in transit differs from place to place, but it's usually a significant figure. In the Netherlands—where Aung works to help businesses achieve their water reductions goals—he says that about 4 to 6% of usable water disappears on the journey from water treatment plants to homes, while as much as 40 to 60% of water can get lost in transit in developing countries like India.

It's used to water lawns.

While individuals don't have much say over how their water gets to them, this next waste source is directly in our control.

Ajami points out that an incredible 50% of household water use in the U.S., on average, is used outside to water lawns. "The biggest irrigated crop we grow in the U.S. is actually grass," Ajami explains, pointing to a study published in the journal Environmental Management 2 in 2005.

Now, some people might not consider a green lawn to be a waste of water—but ask yourself: Do we really need to be using drinkable water to keep our lawns looking pristine? Not only are thirsty turf lawns a waste from a water perspective, but they also come with a hefty carbon footprint and don't do local wildlife any favors .

Those tiny drip-drip-drips of your shower head or kitchen faucet can really add up. According to estimates by the U.S. EPA 3 , the average family loses 9,400 gallons of water per year to household leaks—equivalent to the amount used for 300 loads of laundry.

How to cut back on your water usage.

Beyond repairing leaks and switching over to drought-resistant ground covers , there are tons of other strategies you can employ to waste less water at home. To home in the ones that will have the greatest impact, Aung recommends first considering your unique water usage.

"There is no fixed formula for reducing water demand, so start by assessing your own behavior," he suggests. Do you tend to take long showers? Do you do a lot of laundry—even when the machine isn't full?

Once you have a better understanding of your personal water footprint, you can employ any of these expert-approved steps for reducing it:

Don't leave the tap on when your brushing teeth
Replace your toilet with a vacuum toilet or a high-efficiency toilet that uses less water
Install energy-efficient appliances in your own home (or, if you rent, ask your owners to install them; it's a cost-saving measure as much as a water- and energy-saving one!)
Only flush the toilet when necessary
Only run your dishwasher when it's full
Only run your washing machine when it's full (preferably with cold water)
Take shorter showers
As you're waiting for your shower to warm up, collect the water in a bucket for household use (you can water your plants with it , for example)
Swap your shower head with a low-flow one
Swap out grass for more water-efficient landscaping
Fill your sink with water when washing dishes instead of letting the tap run
Repair leaky pipes at home
Capture rainwater to use around the house and garden
Demand changes on a community level by advocating for policies that fix municipal water leaks, make energy-efficient appliances more accessible, and make water meters in multi-unit buildings the norm to make it easier for folks to keep track of how much water they're using

4. Open defecation is one of the clearest signs of inequality. 494 million people practice open defecation, meaning they go out on the side of the road, in fields or bushes.

5. Children are most at risk . Every day, over 1000 children under 5 die from diseases linked to unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene, which also kills 1.4 million people every year.

6. Babies are being born in dirty conditions. In the world’s least developed countries, 16.6 million women give birth in health centres with inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene – putting them at risk of infection, disease and death.

7. Preventing diseases isn’t as easy as it should be. Handwashing with soap and water is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of disease. But 2.3 billion people still don’t have basic handwashing facilities with soap and water at home. That’s nearly a third of the world’s population.

8. Climate change is making it worse. The changing climate is destroying, drying up and contaminating water sources. In 2022, 436 million children were living in areas with high or extremely high water vulnerability, which is being exacerbated by climate change.

9. Rural populations are the most disadvantaged. 8 out of 10 people who lack even basic drinking water live in rural areas. Two-thirds of people who lack even basic sanitation live in rural areas. 9 out of 10 people who practice open defecation live in rural areas.

10. We must do more. The world is not on track to meet the Sustainable Development Goal 6: access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene for all. UNICEF calls for greater political prioritization and increased funding to improve household access to water, sanitation and hygiene, targeting communities most at risk.

Another problem in the modern management is the small capacity of sewage system. Other cities also tend to direct the rain water into the sewage system that causes overflow in it. If the overflow happens, all the contaminants in the sewage will be spread in all parts of the city which is very harmful to the people. Sewage systems consist of pipes and pumps and have three stages of filtration. The first stage is separating solid waste from the water. Second stage is treating the water and removing microorganisms. Third stage is the process called microfiltration. In this stage the water is being treated and chemical additives are added into the water which eventually treats the liquid and transforms them into drinkable or usable water for our daily use.

Recycling water is no easy task; it takes a lot of time, effort, and investment in doing so. Wasted water will affect so many people’s lives. Dirty water is as harmful as poison when consumed by a person. We can aid in recycling water by researching on how to do simple filtration set-ups, conserve water when not in use, and properly segregate and dispose of garbage so as to not provide toxins in water.

There are two types of wastewater that we can recycle on our own. First is the black water that comes from our toilet. Francis Collins: Why I’m going public with my prostate cancer diagnosis

I served medical research. now it’s serving me. and i don’t want to waste time..

Over my 40 years as a physician-scientist, I’ve had the privilege of advising many patients facing serious medical diagnoses. I’ve seen them go through the excruciating experience of waiting for the results of a critical blood test, biopsy or scan that could dramatically affect their future hopes and dreams.

But this time, I was the one lying in the PET scanner as it searched for possible evidence of spread of my aggressive prostate cancer . I spent those 30 minutes in quiet prayer. If that cancer had already spread to my lymph nodes, bones, lungs or brain, it could still be treated — but it would no longer be curable.

Why am I going public about this cancer that many men are uncomfortable talking about? Because I want to lift the veil and share lifesaving information, and I want all men to benefit from the medical research to which I’ve devoted my career and that is now guiding my care.

Five years before that fateful PET scan, my doctor had noted a slow rise in my PSA, the blood test for prostate-specific antigen. To contribute to knowledge and receive expert care, I enrolled in a clinical trial at the National Institutes of Health, the agency I led from 2009 through late 2021.

At first, there wasn’t much to worry about — targeted biopsies identified a slow-growing grade of prostate cancer that doesn’t require treatment and can be tracked via regular checkups, referred to as “active surveillance.” This initial diagnosis was not particularly surprising. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the United States, and about 40 percent of men over age 65 — I’m 73 — have low-grade prostate cancer . Many of them never know it, and very few of them develop advanced disease.

Why am I going public about this cancer that many men are uncomfortable talking about? Because I want to lift the veil and share lifesaving information.

But in my case, things took a turn about a month ago when my PSA rose sharply to 22 — normal at my age is less than 5. An MRI scan showed that the tumor had significantly enlarged and might have even breached the capsule that surrounds the prostate, posing a significant risk that the cancer cells might have spread to other parts of the body.

New biopsies taken from the mass showed transformation into a much more aggressive cancer. When I heard the diagnosis was now a 9 on a cancer-grading scale that goes only to 10, I knew that everything had changed.

Thus, that PET scan, which was ordered to determine if the cancer had spread beyond the prostate, carried high significance. Would a cure still be possible, or would it be time to get my affairs in order? A few hours later, when my doctors showed me the scan results, I felt a rush of profound relief and gratitude. There was no detectable evidence of cancer outside of the primary tumor.

Later this month, I will undergo a radical prostatectomy — a procedure that will remove my entire prostate gland. This will be part of the same NIH research protocol — I want as much information as possible to be learned from my case, to help others in the future.

While there are no guarantees, my doctors believe I have a high likelihood of being cured by the surgery.

My situation is far better than my father’s when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer four decades ago. He was about the same age that I am now, but it wasn’t possible back then to assess how advanced the cancer might be. He was treated with a hormonal therapy that might not have been necessary and had a significant negative impact on his quality of life.

Because of research supported by NIH, along with highly effective collaborations with the private sector, prostate cancer can now be treated with individualized precision and improved outcomes.

As in my case, high-resolution MRI scans can now be used to delineate the precise location of a tumor. When combined with real-time ultrasound, this allows pinpoint targeting of the prostate biopsies. My surgeon will be assisted by a sophisticated robot named for Leonardo da Vinci that employs a less invasive surgical approach than previous techniques, requiring just a few small incisions.

Advances in clinical treatments have been informed by large-scale, rigorously designed trials that have assessed the risks and benefits and were possible because of the willingness of cancer patients to enroll in such trials.

I feel compelled to tell this story openly. I hope it helps someone. I don’t want to waste time.

If my cancer recurs, the DNA analysis that has been carried out on my tumor will guide the precise choice of therapies. As a researcher who had the privilege of leading the Human Genome Project , it is truly gratifying to see how these advances in genomics have transformed the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

I want all men to have the same opportunity that I did. Prostate cancer is still the No. 2 cancer killer among men. I want the goals of the Cancer Moonshot to be met — to end cancer as we know it. Early detection really matters, and when combined with active surveillance can identify the risky cancers like mine, and leave the rest alone. The five-year relative survival rate for prostate cancer is 97 percent, according to the American Cancer Society , but it’s only 34 percent if the cancer has spread to distant areas of the body.

But lack of information and confusion about the best approach to prostate cancer screening have impeded progress. Currently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all men age 55 to 69 discuss PSA screening with their primary-care physician, but it recommends against starting PSA screening after age 70.

Other groups, like the American Urological Association , suggest that screening should start earlier, especially for men with a family history — like me — and for African American men, who have a higher risk of prostate cancer. But these recommendations are not consistently being followed.

Our health-care system is afflicted with health inequities. For example, the image-guided biopsies are not available everywhere and to everyone. Finally, many men are fearful of the surgical approach to prostate cancer because of the risk of incontinence and impotence, but advances in surgical techniques have made those outcomes considerably less troublesome than in the past. Similarly, the alternative therapeutic approaches of radiation and hormonal therapy have seen significant advances.

A little over a year ago, while I was praying for a dying friend, I had the experience of receiving a clear and unmistakable message. This has almost never happened to me. It was just this: “Don’t waste your time, you may not have much left.” Gulp.

Having now received a diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer and feeling grateful for all the ways I have benefited from research advances, I feel compelled to tell this story openly. I hope it helps someone. I don’t want to waste time.
