Master of Fine Arts theses in the library
How can i read the master's theses documentations.
Institutional repository Taju : Uniarts Helsinki's institutional repository Taju contains full-text theses (pdf) completed after 2015 if the author has given permission for their publication. Theses saved in Taju can also be read remotely. From 2023 onwards you can read all master’s theses either in Open Access or Limited Access
Library: At the moment Master's theses completed at the Academy of Fine Arts between years 2021-2022 are stored in Sörnäinen Campus Library, but later on they will be transferred to the Uniarts Helsinki Archive. Theses are not available on loan or inter-library loan.
Works stored in the library can be recognised in Arsca web library by their location and class indicated as ”Sörnäinen Campus Library, Closed Stacks Theses, Not for home loan” and ”Srn 22.02”.
Theses 2020-2022 are stored in the collaboration space KO-165 on the top floor of the library. To read them, you must make a booking in the printed calendar which is displayed outside the door of the shared space and replaced every week on Mondays. The booking must be within the opening hours of the library's customer service. Check the up-to-date opening hours in Arsca . In other words, theses can only be viewed during the opening hours of the library's customer service, even if the room itself can also be booked for self-service use.
If you wish to read certain theses, make your reservation no later than 12 noon on the morning of your visit. To reserve materials to view, click on the “contact us” button beside the document’s record in Arsca or send a message to the library ( [email protected] ), in which you list the works you wish to view as follows: author's family name, year (for instance: Mäkinen, 2021). If you only wish to browse theses stored in the cabinet in general, you do not need to make a material reservation in advance; booking the space is enough.
Years 2014-2019: Reference data for documentation is available in Arsca
The oldest theses from 1995–2013 are not listed in Arsca. Their reference data can be found on a separate list in Taju.

Please use Arsca search (top right on this page):
- Search example 1: Search with the following phrase: " kuvataiteen maisterin opinnäytetyö "
- Search example 2: Search with: " kuvataiteen maisterin opinnäytetyö " tila-aika
- (alternatively you can add word: kuvanveiston, taidegrafiikan, maalaustaiteen, praxis)
- After you have received your search result use Narrow Search options, for example Language to limit your results to English documentations.

Master's theses in the Uniarts Helsinki Archive
Master of fine arts theses available to order from the uniarts helsinki archive.
Master's theses older than three years are transferred to the Uniarts Helsinki Archive. To view them, you can submit a request for archived materials to Sörnäinen Campus Library. Theses are not available on loan or inter-library loan. Theses saved to Uniarts Helsinki's institutional repository Taju can also be accessed remotely.
The location and class of a thesis transferred to the Uniarts Helsinki Archive in Arsca search service are shown as “Uniarts Helsinki Archive, Not for home loan” and ”Arkisto KuvA Opinnäytteet”.
To reserve archived materials you would like to view, click on the “Contact us” button beside the record of the document in Arsca or send a message to the library ( [email protected] ), in which you list the works you would like to access.
You should be prepared to wait for a few days for archived material. We will send you an e-mail when the material is available at Sörnäinen Campus Library. The material is not available on loan or inter-library loan.
Please note that:
- archived materials may not be taken out of the library
- archived materials are only available during the opening hours of the library’s customer service
- the use of archived materials may be subject to restrictions, which we will tell you about when the materials are handed over
- the reading time of archived materials is two weeks.

Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Visual Arts (SVA) is pleased to present the Class of 2024 Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Thesis Exhibitions, on view from April 2-20, 2024. The MFA thesis exhibitions feature works of graduating students in BU’s MFA programs in Graphic Design , Painting , Sculpture , Print Media & Photography , and Visual Narrative . This is the first thesis exhibition for the Print Media & Photography and Visual Narrative programs since their launch in 2022. With 61 participating students, the MFA Class of 2024 represents the largest cohort of graduating MFA students in the BU School of Visual Arts.
Also new for this year, SVA’s thesis exhibitions have expanded beyond BU and the traditional gallery space. The MFA Painting Thesis Exhibition will be on view at Boston University Art Galleries’ Faye G., Jo, and James Stone Gallery; BU Art Galleries’ 808 Gallery hosts the MFA Print Media & Photography and MFA Graphic Design ( Side B ) Thesis Exhibitions; and the MFA Visual Narrative Thesis Exhibition is taking place at the College of Fine Arts’ Commonwealth Gallery. The MFA Sculpture Thesis Exhibition will be a satellite show off-campus, on view in Allston at 1270 Commonwealth Avenue, an empty space that was once a drugstore and pharmacy.
“These MFA graduate students reveal highly individualized practices informed by culture, locale, historical research, texts, the property of materials, and the body’s relationship to the physical world. The studio is a site of transformation where the expansion of learning and the compression of making meet, as Painting MFA candidate James Gold aptly describes it in his catalog statement,” says Dana Clancy , BU School of Visual Arts Director and Associate Professor of Art, “Our graduate Class of 2024 are artists and designers who have weathered much recent cultural change and flux. A sense of experimentation and attention to community are both fostered through intense studio work, dialogue, and shared social time in and across programs.”
The BU community and the public are invited to experience the exhibitions and attend the receptions. Details regarding the exhibition hours and public receptions on April 12 and April 19 are listed below.

Alongside the MFA Thesis Exhibitions, the MA Art Education students install the artwork created by their students from Boston-area schools. MA Art Education students prepare to be teaching artists by engaging in coursework and research that include interdisciplinary studies, collaboration with other programs and colleges, arts-based research methods, and immersive practice in PreK-12 schools, museums, or in the community.

Abstract This project, begun in 2006, uses photographic and video imagery to investigate the shifting nature of self-representation and identity, and the elusive concept of the ʻself-portraitʼ. Using myself as subject also allows me to explore the excitement of self-transformation. The thesis comprises a studio component made up of eight overlapping bodies of work that engage with the concepts of homage, mimicry, mimesis, masquerade and narcissism, and a written component addressing these concepts in relation to contemporary art more broadly and my place in it. My artistic production is characterised by repeated efforts to represent myself in different appearances by manipulating the surface of my body differently, particularly my face. For me it is a celebration of the performance of life, of the ever-changing nature of life and identity. The images show myself in a wide variety of appearances, and are emblematic of growth, change, adaptation, and transition. Ideas around homage, mimicry and mimesis are integral to this project due to my interest in producing images of myself that are also self-identifications with more famous others. These are specifically Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Yoko Ono and Nico. However, my last body of work is something of a departure from representing myself through another, since instead I explore self-portraiture without adopting the persona of another artist.

When we watch a dance performance, we become aware not only of the dancer’s movements, but of our own corporeal capacity for movement. Thus, dance in exhibition spaces posits spectatorship as a physical act. It also provides an embodied understanding of our relationship to social spaces. How might this kinesthetic awareness be mobilized as a political gesture? My thesis examines the work of six contemporary artists - Jérôme Bel, Trisha Brown, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Joachim Koester, Ralph Lemon, and Rashaad Newsome - whose multi-disciplinary practices utilize two central tenets of the postmodern dance genre: the incorporation of everyday movement within choreography and a rejection of the archetypal dancer. I examine the kinesthetic experience of their dance events through the lens of political and spatial theories proposed by Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe, and Doreen Massey in order to locate political empathy in everyday movement, social encounters and lived experiences.

Lincoln, Neb.—MFA Thesis Exhibition III runs April 15-19 in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall. The exhibition includes the work of two graduating Master of Fine Arts students in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Art, Art History & Design: Jewelya Coffey (painting and drawing) and Matt Meyer (sculpture). Coffey and Meyer will give artist talks on Friday, April 19 starting at 4 p.m. in Richards Hall Rm. 15. A closing reception will be held on Friday, April 19 from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery. General hours for the MFA Thesis Exhibitions in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery are Monday–Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Below is more information about the final two MFA Thesis exhibitions: Jewelya Coffey | Softly and Tenderly Calling Jewelya Coffey (b.1991) is a multidisciplinary artist who makes two-dimensional and three-dimensional work. Her colorful, highly symbolic pieces play with themes of memory, grief, religion, rural life, folklore, growing up in the Ozarks, and explores the god-haunted image. Pushing the boundaries of what a drawing can be, she hopes to capture the spirit of drawing across many mediums. Born in Searcy, Arkansas, and raised partly in Aurora, Missouri, Coffey is an artist and educator currently living in Lincoln, Nebraska. She received her BFA in graphic design from Harding University in 2015. Her work has been most recently exhibited at Project Project, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, and Roberta and Bob Rogers Gallery in Omaha, NE, LUX Center for the Arts and Medici Gallery in Lincoln, NE, Harding University in Searcy, AR and sUgAr Gallery at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR. She currently attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she will obtain her MFA in painting and drawing in the spring of 2024. Matt Meyer | 4:44 Matt Meyer’s exhibition is titled “4:44,” which comes from Jay Z’s album. “4:44” is all about the vulnerability of the Black American experience. Apprehension and elation are two feelings that flow throughout the work and sometimes intertwine. The work shown varies in material and style. There are 2D paper works, works on canvas, and digitally designed images that are printed onto canvas. There are also sculptures that are created using wood, clay, found objects, and plaster. While things may seem separate, they still find a way to flow together. Things within this exhibition challenge how others see the Black experience and how we see ourselves. The goal of all his work is to leave an educational impression on the audience that will cause them to question life, as well as information that is taught. Meyer is a conceptual, mixed-media creator working with ideas of identity, education and history, both past and present. He creates using sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking and digital to tell a story through the Black Voice. In his work, he focuses on the Black experience within America, while still acknowledging and drawing upon the Global Black experience. He earned his B.F.A. at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. His work has been shown throughout the U.S. and internationally. Also on display through April 5 are the following MFA Thesis Exhibitions:
• MFA Exhibition II runs April 1-5 in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery and includes the work of Casey Beck (ceramics). A 2 nd year MFA exhibition will run simultaneously. Beck and Christopher Williams will present artist talks on Friday, April 5 beginning at 4 p.m. in Richards Hall Rm. 15. Beck’s closing reception will be Friday, April 5 from 5-7 p.m. in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery. • Christopher Williams (ceramics) will have his MFA Thesis Exhibition on display at the Lux Center for the Arts, 2601 N. 48 th St., through April 5. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A closing reception will take place on Friday, April 5 from 5-8 p.m. at the Lux Center. Williams will also present an additional gallery talk at the Lux Center on April 5 at 6:30 p.m.

Painting and Planting Counter-Narratives in the Landscape of the Conquest of Mexico
Angélica J. Afanador-Pujol is an associate professor at Arizona State University, where she teaches the history of ancient and early colonial Latin American art. Her current research deals with representations of food and consumption among Indigenous groups in sixteenth-century Mexico. She has published essays in leading art journals, and the University of Texas Press published her book, The Relación de Michoacán (1539-1541) and the Politics of Representation in Colonial Mexico . The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) published her co-authored book Don Antonio Huitzimengari: An indigenous noble in sixteenth-century Mexico . She is the recipient of several awards including two fellowships from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies.

Stephanie Hanes, Visiting Artist Lecture Series

Stephanie is a figurative sculptor whose personal work deals with feminist theory in relation to visual culture and questioning ideas of embodiment, subjectivity, and identity. They explore ideas of the sacred and the profane, dualities of power and its relationships to violence, beauty and grotesqueness.
Stephanie E. Hanes was born in Alberta, Canada in 1985. In 2009 they received a BFA from The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in Halifax, Canada. Hanes is an MFA Graduate of Ceramics at the Rhode Island School Of Design in 2017 and received the prestigious Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship for a graduate student with exceptional promise. Stephanie was one of the artists awarded the 2020 NCECA Emerging Artist Prize. In addition, they have exhibited Internationally with a solo show at C.R.E.T.A Rome Gallery in Italy and several group shows at Secci Gallery in Florence, Italy and at Lefebvre et Fils Gallery in Paris, France. Their ceramic sculptures have been exhibited throughout the USA and Canada in New York City, Providence, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles and Toronto. Hanes is an Assistant Professor in Ceramic Art at New York College Of Ceramics at Alfred University, where they teach ceramic sculpture.
