Jalebi Movie Review: Rhea Chakraborty Is Fine, Varun Mitra Has Potential
Jalebi movie review: the film, which also stars digangana suryavanshi, is a film about love, loss and liberation..
Rhea Chakraborty and Varun Mitra in Jalebi . (Image courtesy: Instagram )
Cast: Rhea Chakraborty, Varun Mitra, Digangana Suryavanshi
Director: Pushpdeep Bhardwaj
Rating: 2 Stars (out of 5)
The film opens with the shrill wail of a distraught woman. It - the film, not the wail - continues down the same emotive path for the next nearly two hours with a girl, who is a successful writer of bestsellers, not only mourning a lost love, but also ruing the sheer futility of life and even contemplating suicide. But mercifully, Jalebi turns out to be more about a lady who learns, with a little bit of prodding, to take a personal setback in her stride than about one who has given up altogether on her future.
While Jalebi , directed by debutant Pushpdeep Bhardwaj, seems to be prone to bouts of overt sentimentality, it does not turn into an outright romantic sob story thanks to the elements of stoic lyricism that the screenplay (by Kausar Munir and Bhardwaj) injects into the story. The film, pitched as "a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore" (well, well), advocates the belief that true love lies not in the act of possessing, but in the generosity of liberating the beloved.
The final impact of this story of a broken relationship offering life lessons is, however, undermined considerably by the erratic quality of the acting from a cast led by two first-timers, Varun Mitra and Digangana Suryavanshi, and a still-raw Rhea Chakraborty.
Jalebi Movie Review: A still from the film. (Image courtesy: Instagram )
A loose adaptation of the outrageously regressive Bengali film, Praktan (2016), which starred two popular Tollygunge stars Prosenjit Chatterjee and Rituparna Sengupta, Jalebi steers well clear of the social backsliding that one witnessed in the original. It refrains from celebrating the lure of domesticity and instead advocates freedom for the girl who walks out of a marriage with only a duffel bag to seek out her own pastures.
Here, two women - one separated from the hero, the other his current wife - are in control although the former indulges in a fair bit of fulminating in the course of a train journey to Delhi, where she is scheduled to take part in a book reading session. The married woman, in contrast, is at peace with herself. She is more than contented with the deal that she's gotten from life thus far but does not feel the need to preen.
Memories of a marriage gone sour comes rushing back to the budding writer because she runs into her ex-husband's wife and seven-year-old daughter, who are travelling in the same AC first class coupe. A series of flashbacks serve the purpose of piecing together her back story, which begins with her meeting her would-be husband, an Old Delhi lad and history grad who revels in hosting walking tours of the neighbourhood he has grown up in and loves more than his life.
Love blooms between the two and culminates in marriage although Dev Mathur (Mitra) and Aisha Pradhan (Chakraborty) are poles part temperamentally and in terms of upbringing. The man is rooted to his home and its environs; the girl is a free bird looking for escape into the big wide world. This marriage of unlike minds is destined for a messy end. The two drift apart as Dev is torn between his mother and his wife.
The brief encounter with Dev's wife Anu (Suryavanshi) revives Aisha's pangs - what she feels is a mix of deep regret and seething anger - and she fights the urge to explode and pour her heart out to the first person in sight. While an old man travelling with his wife recites Muneer Niyazi's Hamesha der kar deta hun main , Dev, in a crucial flashback, chances upon the quote: "If you love a flower, don't pluck it, water it." Jalebi is a film about love, loss and liberation that chooses a radical direction before the curtain is rung down.
As the three principal characters negotiate the complications that arise on this Mumbai Central to Hazrat Nizamuddin train ride, the drama never rises to a genuine crescendo, which will obviously prevent Jalebi from endearing itself to the masses that favour livelier enticements. But there are flashes in the film - admittedly these are few and far between - that suggest that Bhardwaj is a director who is capable of delivering offbeat fare within mainstream narrative formulations.
Among the more striking features of Jalebi are the silences that if offers the audience to balance out the melodramatic scenes and the musical score that opts for serenity over foot-tapping noise - two more reasons why the film might feel wearisome to some. But we'd prefer the love- yatri s of Jalebi any day to the ones that we encountered in that horrendous 'youthful' yarn that was foisted upon us last week.

If this film isn't as crisp as a jalebi fresh off a Parathewali Gali frying pan, it is because the human tools at its disposal aren't top-draw. Varun Mitra has the potential to take on more challenging roles. Ditto Digangana Suryavanshi. Rhea Chakraborty is fine until she is prancing around or is engaged in light-hearted banter, but in the more intense scenes, she exposes more than a few chinks. She still has some way to go before she can be regarded as a finished article.
Jalebi represents a marked improvement on Praktan in terms of gender dynamics. But those that haven't been subjected to the brazenly atavistic Bengali film, the major changes that have been wrought in the underlying thematic emphasis of the original construct will count for little. Jalebi will still, in all likelihood, be treated as a small, starless film unable to fully whet the Bollywood fan's appetite for entertainment.

Vishesh Films, headed by Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt, are known for their small-budget, high-concept films. They have given some memorable films and chartbuster songs but since the last few years, their reputation has taken a beating. None of their films after the blockbuster AASHIQUI 2 [2013] have worked well. The number of films made by the banner has also reduced. Their last film, BEGUM JAAN [2017], released almost one-and-a-half-years ago. Now they are back with JALEBI, which promises to be a clean, romantic love story, and also it’s miles away from the erotic and horror films that had become their trademark. So does JALEBI touch the hearts of the viewers? Or does it fail to stir their emotions? Let’s analyse.
JALEBI is the story of love and separation. Ayesha Pradhan (Rhea Chakraborty) is a depressed girl. She has written a bestselling novel but her troubled past is not allowing her to focus and write her next book. She is on her way from Mumbai to Delhi for a book reading session. In the train, her co passenger is Anu (Digangana Suryavanshi) and her daughter Pulti (Aanya Dureja). Over the course of their conversation, Ayesha gets a jolt upon learning that Anu’s husband is none other than her ex hubby Dev Mathur (Varun Mitra). The story goes back seven - eight years. Dev is from Purani Dilli where he does guided tours. He’s proud of his roots and proudly flaunts his locality and also his mansion, popularly known as Netaji Ki Haveli. Once, Ayesha takes this tour and falls for Dev. Dev also develops feelings for her. In no time, they get married and that’s when cracks begin to develop in their relationship. Meanwhile, in the present day, the train halts at Bhusawal railway station and Dev enters their coach to give Anu a surprise. The ex-lovers, that is Dev and Ayesha, thus come face to face after all these years. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
Just like BEGUM JAAN, JALEBI is also a Bengali film remake, of Prosenjit Chatterjee-Rituparna Sengupta starrer PRAKTAN [2016], which was written by Nandita Roy and directed by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee. Here in Hindi, Kausar Munir and Pushpdeep Bhardwaj's story is disappointing and juvenile. There’s no head and tail to the story and they do total injustice to the original film. Kausar Munir, Pushpdeep Bhardwaj and Suhrita Sengupta's screenplay is the biggest culprit. The film is bland and the trio have made no attempt to make situations exciting or novel. Kausar Munir, Pushpdeep Bhardwaj and Suhrita Sengupta's dialogues are horrible to say the least. The manner in which the characters are talking to each other is laughable.
Pushpdeep Bhardwaj's direction is amateur and he doesn’t even know the basics properly it seems. The way the film moves back and forth especially when Ayesha would hear a term or hear a song is so convenient and outdated. And the post-marriage problems are akin to saas-bahu drama shown on television but even those daily soaps are more entertaining and even progressive than this film.
JALEBI is terrible from the word 'Go'. The film begins with a loud cry of Ayesha on the black screen and hence, even before the first visual, the film gets unsettling! The beginning portion of Ayesha crying over abandoning her marriage is weird. Once the train portions begin, one hopes for the film to get a bit better. Also, there are 3 subplots involving various passengers in the bogie. They seem interesting and you expect them to add to the film, in case the lead protagonists aren’t able to. Sadly, these three tracks are boring and contribute in no way to the film. The flashback portion begins well. Dev showing his house to the tourists is nicely done. Also the way Ayesha books the entire tour for herself just so that she can spend all the time with Dev is lovely. Once they get married, the film becomes routine and showcases problems beaten to death in films. The miscarriage portion is also poorly executed. The train portions aren’t that interesting, although few developments are a bit unpredictable. If you expect the climax to at least lift the film to some extent, you’ll be dejected. The Kashmir sequence makes no sense and even more senseless is the justification given by Dev in the end.
Varun Mitra is disappointing. He looks weird in the scenes where he has to cry and even when he’s seen celebrating his wife’s pregnancy. In the beginning scenes, he does well. The actor has done well in the past, in Ishaan Nair’s unreleased film KAASH [2015]. So, here, the fault could be of the director in failing to get better performance from him. Rhea Chakraborty is what makes the film bearable. She has done chirpy roles in the past and JALEBI is the first time she is seen in a serious, mature role. She is the only one to benefit from this film as she proves that she can do a lot more than comic capers and special appearances. Digangana Suryavanshi is alright while Aanya Dureja is sweet. Arjun Kanungo (Arjun) is okay and his track makes no sense. Farida Dadi and Yusuf Hussain (the old couple in train) are fine but are letdown by the script. What exactly are they doing in the film one wonders. Poorti Arya (Renu; Dev’s sister) and the actor playing Dev’s mother are forgettable.
Music also gets thumbs down, which is sad, since Vishesh Films was known for its songs. 'Tum Se' is catchy but it’s not going to linger in one’s mind for long. 'Tera Mera Rishta' is played during the courtship scenes, which as mentioned above, was the only good part of the film. The rest of the songs like 'Mujhme' , 'Pehle Ke Jaisa' , 'Pal' and 'Mera Pyaar Tera Pyaar' are nothing special. Raju Singh’s background score is bad. Same goes for Manoj Soni's cinematography – few shots are taken from a very close range. The VFX is tacky and anyone can make out that the scenery seen from the window is fake. Sandeep Suvarna's production design is alright and the set does look like an actual First AC bogie. But it’s funny to see the railway station being so empty in the end, and that too the busy Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station of Delhi. Devendra Murdeshwar's editing is not good and even the film that’s just 112 minutes looked like a three-hour-plus film.
On the whole, JALEBI will leave you with a bitter taste. It’s a film that has no plot or logic. At the box office, it will be a disaster. Skip!

Jalebi Hindi Movie
It can be either a boon or a bane walking into a film having no remote idea what it's about. Sometimes, films have the ability pleasantly surprise you because you don't have a performed bias for or against them based on plethora of pre-release materials. Other times, you wonder if Cinema has fallen so far that films like Jalebi are produced at the cost of crores without a second thought to its creative strengths and who is put in charge of it.
There's no doubt that this is a Bhatt Camp film out and out, sentimental claptrap about a doomed romance that has been greenlit only on one basis: inclusion of a socially relevant issue that nobody associated with this film has any passion or belief in.
Jalebi is a film trying to deal with difficulties after marriage, the unsaid rule to start reproducing as soon as the final vows are said and the final incantation is chanted. It hopes to provide a more conservative, freely reproducing indian society with important insight into the toll giving birth to a new life takes on women, who feel compelled to take on the thankless role of a mother and how the loss of a loved one has the ability to completely change the course of future life as you had imagined it.
Instead, this turns out to be a film in which dialogues like "aap meri Beti ko 2 minute ke liye dekh lijiye, main ek minute mein aati hoon" are said without any intentional humor and the maturity of the writing includes showing your main female lead bond with a stranger's kid named Pulti she has just met on the train by distracting her by askig if she can kiss her own elbow.
This is the kind of film where you know there's obviously going to be some tacky explaination for the title but the in-film reference to it turns out to be a lot worse (and more inconsequential) than you might think. Where random characters pop up without any relevance to the plot and their subplots are given passing importance only to act as a set up for a single song in the middle of a Mumbai local train by a famous singer.
What's worse is that the amateur filmmaking, with its over reliance on needless close-ups which makes bad acting look worse and tacky dubbing (in fact, the overall sound design and editing) that's only reserved for super cheap Bhatt productions, is still a more forgiveable crime. What truly sinks the film is the lack of complexity and deeper understanding in dealing with a subject like this. The writers' (Kausar Munir and Pushpdeep Bhardwaj) and the director's (Bhardwaj) idea of dealing with the loss of a child is the filmy notion of getting beaten up by random street thugs for no reason, except they don't even follow through on that. Director Bhardwaj's idea of what reproductive rights are and the issues women have to face on a daily basis to fight for them is that of a school kid who has been blindly given the topic he has no idea about during a debate competition and he is now trying to give the most vague opinions for the motion for the next few minutes to pass off as smart. I heard a woman sitting next to me sighing audibly at the silliness of it all.
Their sensitivity towards a topic like suicide is to casually bring it up in the beginning and then keep stressing upon that moment by spoon feeding the dialogue again as a Voice Over callback to it. Somebody told them incorporating a current social issue into your film is a hot-selling trend. They forgot to tell them to treat the issue with sincerity. And now here we are.
The narrative structure is horrendous, with little to no threads connecting the two timelines as we alternate between them. Sometimes, the back and fro happens only when the director remembers that there's two parallel tracks to be told. The interval point, which culminates all the build up of the first half, lands with the dramatic weight of a feather. There's 5 songs too many. The actors are too wet behind their ears to lend any emotional gravitas to their parts, with Rhea Chakraborty lacking the self control and debutante Varun Mitra coming with just one stock expression setting.
I could easily make jokes at the expense of Jalebi's name, talking about how the actual sweet dish is bad for your health but worth the risk but this film doesn't even deserve that much effort. Avoid it. Don't watch it. It's a no no.

Jalebi movie review.
The way the film moves back and forth especially when Ayesha would hear a term or hear a song is so convenient and outdated. And the post-marriage problems are akin to saas-bahu drama shown on television but even those daily soaps are more entertaining and even progressive than this film. (more)

Rhea Chakraborty Is Fine, Varun Mitra Has Potential
Jalebi will still, in all likelihood, be treated as a small, starless film unable to fully whet the Bollywood fa's appetite for entertainment. (more)

A sappy, emotional tear-filled journey with strictly average performances and a weak screenplay.
What could have been an interesting and quirky train ride turns into a sappy, emotional tear-filled journey that seems like it will go on forever. With so many things working against it, this is definitely one dessert wed recommend you taste with caution. (more)
