In 1982, Kalpana completed her engineering course from Punjab Engineering College. She chose aeronautical engineering and to every one’s surprise, she was the first lady to enroll for the course and successfully completed it with flying colors in the year 1982.

In the same year, she went ahead in pursuit of her dreams of studying further. Hence, she moved to the US and studied for two years in aerospace engineering and finally achieved an MS degree in aerospace engineering in 1984.

But her quest for knowledge made her yearn for more and she applied for the doctoral program.

In 1988, she was conferred the honorary doctorate by the University of Colorado where she pursued her PhD in aerospace engineering.

When she was still pursuing her MS degree, she got married to Jean- Pierre Harrison in 1983. Mr. Harrison himself was a famous aviation author and Kalpana’s flying instructor.

NASA Dreams

In 1993, Kalpana landed a job with NASA as vice president and research scientist of Overset Methods Inc. Before that, Kalpana was able to successfully achieve certification as a flying instructor herself.

She was bestowed with the responsibility of technically rating gliders and aircraft systems.

She was also a proud commercial pilot license holder. As research scientist, she worked on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research.

She dealt in detail, the vertical/short take-off and landing concepts and did CFD research on them.

It was only in 1991, that Kalpana received her US citizenship and in the same year she proudly applied for NASA Astronaut Corps.

She was able to join the Corps only in 1995. Kalpana joined the Johnson space center and was chosen as a candidate member of the 151st group of astronauts.

It was a proud moment for Kalpana when she was selected for making her first flight journey in 1996. The space shuttle flight STS-87 marked her first space mission as an astronaut and she was sent on a research mission comprising of sixteen days. Kalpana’s dreams had finally turned to reality with the first space mission she conquered.

The research mission was carried out in the late November 1997 and she studied Sun’s outer atmospheric layers and also did extensive studies about weightlessness. With this mission, Kalpana proudly became the first Indian woman to set foot into space.

Before her, no woman had received such a feat in her career and she continues to be a great inspiration to many little girls to chase their dreams and reach the stars.

The mission was a remarkable one, in that; it takes the determination of a person with complex technical thinking to achieve a feat something as this.

It sounds completely Greek and Latin for a common man, but a high insight of technical knowledge, expertise and foresightedness to overcome big hurdles and achieve the unachievable.

The Tragic Second Mission

Kalpana did not settle down with just one space mission and was determined to conquer more. Her dream was to go on more such missions and she made that a reality by getting chosen for a second space mission in 2003.

A very big moment in Kalpana’s life as she gave wings to her dreams literally and pursued hard work and determination in quest of her love for space and flying.

Kalpana along with six other crew members, making a total of seven members boarded STS – 107 in January 2003 and were launched into space. This was also a sixteen day mission and they had to accomplish a huge task ahead on board the Columbia spaceship .

They had to carry out many scientific experiments and they successfully completed 80 of them when in the orbit and prepared for their return journey.

All the crew members were really excited with their farfetched accomplishments and the 16 day journey was to come to an end after landing on earth.

But as destiny would have it, the space shuttle disintegrated and at a high altitude of 2,07,000 feet above the ground level recorded at Texas, the shuttle could not be monitored.

Suddenly, they lost control of the spaceship and the crew members lost communication control with the space center, while suddenly causing a huge explosion that tore apart the shuttle into bits and pieces.

The ill fated journey thus came to a drastic end with all seven crew members including Kalpana Chawla losing their lives in the mission, on the ill fated day of February 2003. The whole nation mourned the untimely death of Kalpana Chawla.

An Inspiration for many

Kalpana Chawla, to this day is remembered as a courageous and brave woman who fought valiantly for achieving her dreams. She worked really hard to pursue her goals and there was nothing that could deter her determination.

Her love for the skies started right from her childhood days and though she came from a small town in Haryana, she did not deter from dreaming big and then pursuing it further to make it a big reality.

Her parents’ support and guidance helped her wade through tough times. She touched a land that was only meant for men and proved that gender domination was a thing of the past.

Kalpana Chawla facts for kids

Kalpana Chawla (March 17, 1962 – February 1, 2003) was an American astronaut, engineer , and the first woman of Indian origin to go to space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator. In 2003, Chawla was one of the seven crew members who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster when the spacecraft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. Chawla was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, and several streets, universities, and institutions have been named in her honor. She is regarded as a national hero in India.

First space mission

Second space mission, honors and recognition.

Chawla was born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal, Haryana. Her family originally hails from Multan District (now in Pakistan), who settled in Karnal following the Partition of India . Kalpana’s official date of birth was altered to July 1, 1961, to allow her to become eligible for the matriculation exam. As a child, Kalpana was fascinated by aeroplanes and flying. She went to local flying clubs and watched planes with her father. Chawla said "Every once in a while we'd ask my dad if we could get a ride in one of these planes. And, he did take us to the flying club and we had a joyride in the Pushpak and a glider that the flying club had."

In 1976, Chawla graduated from the Tagore School, where she was a high-performing student. After getting a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, India, she moved to the United States in 1982 and obtained a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1984. Chawla went on to earn a second Masters in 1986 and a PhD in aerospace engineering in 1988 from the University of Colorado Boulder .

Chawla was married to Jean-Pierre Harrison

In 1988, she began working at NASA Ames Research Center, where she did computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research on vertical and/or short take-off and landing (V/STOL) concepts. Much of Chawla's research is included in technical journals and conference papers. In 1993, she joined Overset Methods, Inc. as Vice President and Research Scientist specializing in simulation of moving multiple body problems. Chawla held a Certificated Flight Instructor rating for airplanes, gliders and Commercial Pilot licenses for single and multi-engine airplanes, seaplanes and gliders. After becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in April 1991, Chawla applied for the NASA Astronaut Corps. She joined the corps in March 1995 and was selected for her first flight in 1996.

Her first space mission began on November 19, 1997, as part of the six-astronaut crew that flew the Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS-87 . Chawla was the first Indian woman to fly in space. She spoke the following words while traveling in the weightlessness of space, "You are just your intelligence." On her first mission, Chawla traveled over 10.4 million miles (16737177.6 km) in 252 orbits of the earth, logging more than 372 hours (15 days and 12 hours) in space. During STS-87, she was responsible for deploying the Spartan Satellite which malfunctioned, necessitating a spacewalk by Winston Scott and Takao Doi to capture the satellite. A five-month NASA investigation fully exonerated Chawla by identifying errors in software interfaces and the defined procedures of the flight crew and ground control. After the completion of STS-87 post-flight activities, Chawla was assigned to technical positions in the astronaut office to work on the space station.

In 2001, Chawla was selected for her second flight as part of the crew of STS-107 . This mission was repeatedly delayed due to scheduling conflicts and technical problems such as the July 2002 discovery of cracks in the shuttle engine flow liners. On January 16, 2003, Chawla finally returned to space aboard Space Shuttle Columbia on the ill-fated STS-107 mission . The crew performed nearly 80 experiments studying Earth and space science, advanced technology development, and astronaut health and safety. During the launch of STS-107 , Columbia ' s 28th mission, a piece of foam insulation broke off from the Space Shuttle external tank and struck the left-wing of the orbiter. Previous shuttle launches had seen minor damage from foam shedding, but some engineers suspected that the damage to Columbia was more serious. NASA managers limited the investigation, reasoning that the crew could not have fixed the problem if it had been confirmed. When Columbia re-entered the atmosphere of Earth , the damage allowed hot atmospheric gases to penetrate and destroy the internal wing structure, which caused the spacecraft to become unstable and break apart. After the disaster, Space Shuttle flight operations were suspended for more than two years, similar to the aftermath of the Challenger disaster . Construction of the International Space Station (ISS) was put on hold; the station relied entirely on the Russian Roscosmos State Corporation for resupply for 29 months until Shuttle flights resumed with STS-114 and 41 months for crew rotation.

Chawla died on February 1, 2003, in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, along with the other six crew members, when the Columbia disintegrated over Texas during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere , shortly before it was scheduled to conclude its 28th mission, STS-107. Chawla's remains were identified along with those of the rest of the crew members and were cremated and scattered at Zion National Park in Utah in accordance with her wishes.

The Story of Kalpana Chawla: An Inspiration for Your Child

Does your child want to become an astronaut? Then Kalpana Chawla's story will inspire her. This article narrates the life history of Kalpana Chawla charting out her path to NASA.

The Story of Kalpana Chawla: An Inspiration for Your Child

Does your child gaze at twinkling stars and wonder what they are? Do her little fingers yearn to, one day, touch the fluffy clouds? Then, let the story of Kalpana Chawla inspire your child. For, the biography of this Indian-American astronaut who is also the first woman of Indian origin to conquer space, deserves to be written in gold. From being born in a small town in India to reach where no Indian woman has gone before followed by her tragic demise, the story of this first female Indian astronaut is truly worth a biopic.

As a parent, information about her life history, the career-path she followed and her flight to success will help kindle your child's interest in space. Here's an insight into the life of this great astronaut who did India proud.

Kalpana Chawla - The first female Indian astronaut

Kalpana's parents must have had great foresight when they named their child Kalpana, meaning 'imagination'. For, in Kalpana's own words, she was led by, "A strong desire to travel beyond the blue yonder, to fly into the heavens and touch the stars someday ..."

Kalpana Chawla - Early life

Born in the sleepy little town of Karnal, Haryana, Kalpana Chawla was known for her brilliant academic record throughout schooling. She also took part in a whole range of extra-curricular activities - from athletics to dance. While others of her age were playing with dolls, Kalpana loved to sketch and paint airplanes. She made aero-models, and models of the universe and constellations, for science and geography projects in school. Her academic inclinations and interests in aeromodelling laid the foundation for a great journey to outer space that eventually rewrote many records.

Kalpana passed out of Tagore Bal Niketan School, Karnal in 1976. It is believed that at DAV College for Women, where she pursued her pre-university, a 'sets' theory session got her even more motivated to become an astronaut .

Kalpana Chawla - Education

A few years later, Kalpana graduated in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College. It should be noted that she was the only girl in the Aeronautics branch of her college. She was also the secretary of the Aero-Astro club of her college. During her very first year there, she presented a paper on time lapse in space. Shortly after completing her engineering degree, Kalpana was offered a job at HAL, Bangalore, but she turned it down as she was committed to taking her space ambitions further.

In pursuit of her dream, Kalpana applied for Graduate Aeronautical Engineering programmes in three very prominent institutions in the USA. Although she got selected in all three institutions, Kalpana opted for the MS degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas. This was followed by another MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a Doctorate in Philosophy in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado in 1988.

Kalpana began working at NASA's Ames Research Center the same year. Meanwhile, inspired by JRD Tata, she took to flying and obtained her commercial pilot licenses for single and multi-engine airplanes, seaplanes and gliders.

Kalpana Chawla - At NASA

In 1994, the much-awaited dream was about to come true with NASA selecting Kalpana for astronaut training . She had to undergo evaluation for one year - an arduous process which required immense levels of fitness. Kalpana Chawla's determination saw her through this rigorous training programme. In 1996, she was assigned the role of a mission specialist on STS-87 Columbia. In 1997, she finally realised her dream by being a part of a six-astronaut crew aboard the STS-87. Of her first trip to space, Kalpana said that sunrises and sunsets defined her experience in outer space. She yearned for a second chance and that came in 2003, when she was a part of the crew of STS-107, on a 16-day mission dedicated to science and research. On being selected again, she had then said, "Doing it again is like living a dream - a good dream - once again." But, sadly, this time she went off on an eternal voyage to outer space, never to return.

On February 1, 2003, when the shuttle was making its re-entry into the earth's atmosphere, tragedy struck. Sixteen minutes prior to the scheduled landing, the space shuttle disintegrated, thus ending a great space chapter.

Kalpana will be remembered not only for her spectacular feats, but also for her message to children.

"Material interests are not the only guiding light. It is something you'd enjoy doing in the long run. Take the time to figure out how to get there. The quickest way may not necessarily be the best. The journey matters as much as the goal. Listen to the sounds of Nature. Wishing you the best on your trek towards your dreams. Take good care of our fragile planet," she had said.

In fact, Kalpana Chawla was remembered as 'a great friend and mentor' by another American astronaut of Indian origin, Sunita Williams. This famous woman astronaut took off on the space shuttle 'Discovery' to the ISS (International Space Station) on 9 December 2006 and set two records for women in space - being more than 29 hours outside the spacecraft on four spacewalks and spending more than 195 days in space. The latter record was broken by the Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti in 2015. On 15 July 2012, Sunita Williams set off on her second trip to space on Soyuz TMA-05M and spent nearly 127 days in space.

Truly inspirational - the achievements of Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams! Let your child too dream big and soar high!

February 1, 2003, was the day when the gloom overtook everything at various Science institutions the world over. The reason the U.S. space shuttle Columbia broke up in the air on its re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere. In a spur of the moment, the whole team of scientists with the spacecraft was blown into pieces. Among them was our own Kalpana Chawla who was on that mission as the mission specialist. Born on January 6, 1967, at Karnal in India, Kalpana completed her studies up to the University level in India and went to the U.S.A. for higher studies. She had the ambition to become a pilot and fly high in the sky. In the U.S.A., Kalpana acquired her Ph.D. and joined NASA as a space scientist.

This brilliant Indian-American lady proved once again that the Indian talent lags behind no other people of the world. A couple of years back, she was sent into space on a mission that was a complete success in all respects. She had completed her task successfully and that led to the authorities appointing her as the mission specialist to the campaign at the beginning of the year 2003. All went well and the space shuttle was on its way back to the earth, when, just 16 minutes away from home, all was lost in a bang. As the news was reported the same morning, everyone felt deeply grieved over the loss of Kalpana which was very much our own. It was just like a family mourns the loss of its child. Kalpana is lost now, but the country that produced her still exists, and let us takes a pledge that each of us will prove as good as Kalpana and shall our motherland be proud in the same way she did. That will be the most appropriate tribute to that great soul that departed all of a sudden.
