Character.org Announces Results of 2023 Laws of Life Essay Contest For Students

Jun 7, 2023

Washington, D.C. (May 24, 2023) – Character.org is pleased to announce the results of its 2023 Laws of Life essay contest. The Laws of Life essay contest encourages elementary, middle school and high school students to reflect and write about a core value that means the most to them – and why. It provides students the opportunity to write from the heart to explain their thinking to others.

This is the second year Character.org has managed this contest, having expanded the contest previously run by the Connecticut-based School for Ethical Education, whose grant to Character.org makes the Laws of Life program possible. The School for Ethical Education managed the contest in Connecticut for several years. The original Laws of Life contest began in 1997 under the management of the John Templeton Foundation.

Students from the United States and nine other countries in grades 4 – 12 participated during the 2022-2023 school year, submitting a total of 1,139 essays from 98 schools. Pennsylvania and New Jersey students submitted the majority of the U.S. essays, with 63 U.S. schools participating in the 2023 contest. Romania and Brazil accounted for 70% of the essays submitted from outside the United States, from a total of 35 schools.

All student participants will receive recognition from Character.org. Six students are being honored for writing essays which were evaluated by a team of judges and deemed “Most Compelling” Worldwide, based upon content, structure, grammar and spelling. An additional twenty students, ten each from the United States and countries outside the U.S., are being recognized for writing exemplary essays in the high school and elementary/middle school age groups. Additionally, Character.org is recognizing the work of one student from each school that participated. (A list of these honorees is attached.)

More information about the Laws of Life essay contest and this year’s student honorees is available at Character.org’s website at https://character.org/laws-of-life-contest/ . Consistency

It’s easy to post a list of core values on the refrigerator. It’s much more difficult for parents to be consistent. Consistency lets children know what to expect and what is expected of them. Of course, children will push boundaries  but inconsistency from parents confuses children.

Everyone involved in your child’s development are critical to modeling and upholding core values. Parents need to work with these important role models to foster the importance of doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right way, and for the right reasons.

Parents need to commit to model and reinforce to their children the core values and character strengths that mean the most to them. They also need to be creative and offer meaningful experiences that illuminate how important these character strengths are to the family’s core values.

Conversations

We know “We need to talk” freaks kids out, but too often parents avoid having conversations about character, especially as children get older. While it may not be easy to talk sometimes, we know from the research that parents who avoid talking to their children about serious matters quickly lose trust and connection.

Celebration

Parents need to find ways for their children to be active participants in their own character growth. Optimal character development occurs when children begin to make self-motivated commitments to consistently practice a core value (e.g. “I want to be the kind of person who is always honest and shows up on time.”) Parents need to celebrate these moments to shape and define individual character.

Money is a crucial part of our lives. It is the medium used for exchange of goods and services, and it helps us meet our basic needs.

Significance in Daily Life

Money allows us to acquire food, shelter, and clothing. Without money, survival would be difficult.

Money also plays a societal role. It helps us contribute to community development through taxes.

While money is important, it’s not everything. It’s a tool for survival and contribution, but happiness and fulfillment also require love, health, and peace.

250 Words Essay on Importance of Money

The significance of money.

Money, a medium of exchange, is a fundamental component of modern society. It is a tool that allows us to acquire goods, services, and experiences, thus playing a vital role in our lives.

Money as a Means of Exchange

Money simplifies trade, replacing the need for a direct barter system. It provides a standardized measure of value, enabling us to understand the worth of various commodities. This standardization facilitates smooth economic transactions and promotes economic efficiency.

Money and Freedom

Money also provides a certain level of freedom. It allows individuals to make choices about their lifestyle, from basic necessities to luxury items. It grants us the liberty to explore different opportunities, be it travel, education, or investment.

Money and Social Status

In many societies, money is often equated with power and status. While this perspective can lead to materialism and inequality, it also motivates individuals to strive for financial stability, fostering innovation and economic growth.

Money as a Tool, Not a Goal

However, it is crucial to remember that money is a means to an end, not an end in itself. The pursuit of money should not overshadow the importance of relationships, health, and personal fulfillment.

In conclusion, money holds significant importance in our lives. It is the cornerstone of economic activity, a catalyst for personal freedom, and a symbol of status. However, its value lies in its ability to enable us to achieve our goals, not in its mere accumulation.

500 Words Essay on Importance of Money

Money, often seen as a simple medium of exchange, plays a pivotal role in modern society. Its importance transcends mere transactions, permeating every aspect of our lives – from the economy to social structures, personal relationships, and even our sense of self-worth.

The Economic Imperative

At its most basic level, money is the lifeblood of any economy. It facilitates trade, allowing for the efficient exchange of goods and services. Without money, barter would be the only alternative – a system fraught with inefficiencies and limitations. Money, therefore, enables economic growth by allowing for specialization and the division of labor.

Money as a Social Construct

Beyond its economic function, money also plays a crucial role in society. It is a social construct that shapes and is shaped by our societal norms and values. Money can affect social dynamics, influencing relationships and power structures. It can serve as a tool for social mobility or conversely, a means of maintaining social stratification.

The Psychological Dimension

Money also has a profound psychological impact. It can influence our behavior, our motivations, and even our sense of self. Money can provide a sense of security and freedom, but it can also lead to stress and anxiety. The desire for money can motivate us to work harder and strive for success, but it can also lead to greed and materialism.

Money and Happiness

The relationship between money and happiness is a complex one. While money can provide for our basic needs and desires, research suggests that beyond a certain point, additional wealth does not lead to additional happiness. This suggests that while money is important, it is not the be-all and end-all of life.

In conclusion, the importance of money cannot be understated. It is a crucial component of our economy, a significant social construct, and a powerful psychological influence. However, it is also important to remember that money is a means to an end, not an end in itself. The pursuit of money should not overshadow the pursuit of happiness, fulfillment, and meaningful relationships. As society continues to evolve, so too will our understanding and use of money, necessitating an ongoing exploration of its role and importance in our lives.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

MONEY AND THE MEANING OF LIFE

by Jacob Needleman ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 18, 1991

In previous work, dealing with apparently evermore earthly concerns, Needleman (Philosophy/San Francisco State) has dug for the spiritual roots of Christianity (Lost Christianity, 1980), philosophy (The Heart of Philosophy, 1982), and medicine (The Way of the Physician, 1985). Now, he tackles mammon itself—in a genuinely innovative study of the relationship between money and the spiritual life. As before, Needleman uses anecdote and idea-driven drama to illustrate his argument—a welcome technique here, since his thinking is complex, sometimes difficult. The frame in this case is a one-day seminar he gave on money and meaning—allowing him to employ two characters, Bill and Alyssa (``fictionalized distillations of numerous rich exchanges with my students''), who act, more or less, as Phaedo or Meno to his Socrates. Bill, though a multimillionaire, understands neither money nor life; Alyssa, an artist-turned-accountant, has a partial grasp of both. The two listen and question as Needleman—with reference to the Bible (e.g., a drawn-out retelling of the legend of Solomon) and the ideas of Weber, the Sufis, Gurdjieff, and others—traces what he sees as the devolution of money from its ancient balanced purpose of organizing mundane affairs to its present lock on our lives. We are obsessed with money, Needleman says, yet ``we don't take money seriously enough''—that is, we fail to give it its proper place. This is the heart of his brief: that humanity was created to dwell in ``two worlds''—that of the spirit and that of the mundane—and that only by fully mastering the mundane, in its primary manifestation of money, can we discern that which properly belongs to the spirit. The idea manifests itself in action as Needleman experiences a spiritual breakthrough in turning down Bill's whimsical gift to him of a half-million in gold. Dynamic philosophy that opens up a whole new way of looking at the financial demands of life. Needleman's best and most important book.

THE AMERICAN SOUL

THE 48 LAWS OF POWER

by Robert Greene ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 1, 1998

If the authors are serious, this is a silly, distasteful book. If they are not, it’s a brilliant satire.

The authors have created a sort of anti-Book of Virtues in this encyclopedic compendium of the ways and means of power.

Everyone wants power and everyone is in a constant duplicitous game to gain more power at the expense of others, according to Greene, a screenwriter and former editor at Esquire (Elffers, a book packager, designed the volume, with its attractive marginalia). We live today as courtiers once did in royal courts: we must appear civil while attempting to crush all those around us. This power game can be played well or poorly, and in these 48 laws culled from the history and wisdom of the world’s greatest power players are the rules that must be followed to win. These laws boil down to being as ruthless, selfish, manipulative, and deceitful as possible. Each law, however, gets its own chapter: “Conceal Your Intentions,” “Always Say Less Than Necessary,” “Pose as a Friend, Work as a Spy,” and so on. Each chapter is conveniently broken down into sections on what happened to those who transgressed or observed the particular law, the key elements in this law, and ways to defensively reverse this law when it’s used against you. Quotations in the margins amplify the lesson being taught. While compelling in the way an auto accident might be, the book is simply nonsense. Rules often contradict each other. We are told, for instance, to “be conspicuous at all cost,” then told to “behave like others.” More seriously, Greene never really defines “power,” and he merely asserts, rather than offers evidence for, the Hobbesian world of all against all in which he insists we live. The world may be like this at times, but often it isn’t. To ask why this is so would be a far more useful project.

THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS

THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS

And other essays.

by Albert Camus ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 26, 1955

This a book of earlier, philosophical essays concerned with the essential "absurdity" of life and the concept that- to overcome the strong tendency to suicide in every thoughtful man-one must accept life on its own terms with its values of revolt, liberty and passion. A dreary thesis- derived from and distorting the beliefs of the founders of existentialism, Jaspers, Heldegger and Kierkegaard, etc., the point of view seems peculiarly outmoded. It is based on the experience of war and the resistance, liberally laced with Andre Gide's excessive intellectualism. The younger existentialists such as Sartre and Camus, with their gift for the terse novel or intense drama, seem to have omitted from their philosophy all the deep religiosity which permeates the work of the great existentialist thinkers. This contributes to a basic lack of vitality in themselves, in these essays, and ten years after the war Camus seems unaware that the life force has healed old wounds... Largely for avant garde aesthetes and his special coterie.

Money is not the only measure of success in life.

Essay : Money is not the only measure of success in life For most people in our modern-capitalism world, money is the first thing, and sometimes the only thing that measures success in their life. Money can buy power. Money can buy fame. Money can buy time. Sometimes money can even buy a life. So money has become the first common goal for everybody. However, there is something else that can be the measurement of success in life.

One important thing that defines success in our lives is our careers. With different careers, we will have different goals and measurements of our success. If you are an athlete, your success can be measured by lots of things such as wining tournaments, breaking records, playing in the top league or competing in the Olympics. If you are a scientist, the success in your life will mostly depend on your researches. One line of formula that can prove your theory is true can be the great success in your life. If you are a writer, you will probably succeed if your book gets on the best-selling shelf in the bookstore or if your works get published in a magazine. If you are a musician, playing in the country’s orchestra or a number of your CDs that have been sold can be counted as the measurement of your success. So we can see that another measurement of success in your life besides money is how much you have succeeded in your career.

Success in human life is often measured by numbers. Therefore, everything that can be counted can be used as a measurement. Again, these measurements vary with each career. If you are an athlete maybe it is the number of tournaments or the number of matches you have won. But if you are a writer, it is probably the number of your books that have been sold out or if you are a musician it might be the number of your CDs. Sometimes it could be even a silly thing like the number of girlfriends you have. In fact, it is human nature that we always want to compare ourselves to others. In almost every career there is money involved, and maybe that is the reason why people always look at money as primary measurement of their success - they can easily compare it with the others.

The other measurement of success in our lives is awards. For the scientists one of the greatest accomplishments in their life is to win a Nobel Prize, for the writers there is the Pulitzer award, for actors and actresses there is an academy award, for musicians a Grammy’s and so on. These things are different from the other measurements in that it is judged by other people not ourselves.

Besides those measurements we can compare them with other people or let other people measure our success, sometimes just accomplishing our wishes or dreams can be measures of success in our lives. So it does not matter that you have won the world championships or just the tournament in your school, working in the biggest company in the country or just set up your small company. If it is your dream, you have already succeeded in your life.

The common goal in people’s life is to be peaceful and happy. Being the richest man in the world does not mean you are the happiest man in the world, although money can buy you happiness sometimes, but not always. So another measurement of success you are in your is how happy your life is. It might be having a warm family and children, having lots of friends or maybe just having someone who truly loves you.

In addition, as times change, the measurement of success in life also changes. For examples, wealth, thing that many people use to judge success in one’s life, is changing when time has passed. Thousands of years ago when humans were still a cavemen, it might have been how big you cave was. Hundreds of years ago it might have been how big your land was. Today it is how much money is in your bank account, so maybe in the future it might be something else.

In conclusion, the measurement of success in your live can be many things. It just depends on time, what goals you have and who is the one doing the judging Money is just the first common, one but it is not the only one.
