ਸਾਡੇ ਦੇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਛਪਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਹਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਨਪਸੰਦ ਦੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਅਖਬਾਰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਰਥਾਤ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੌਕੀਨ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਤੇ ਹਿੰਦੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੌਕੀਨ ਹਿੰਦੀ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਹੀ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ, ਸਪਤਾਹਿਕ, ਪੰਦਰਾਂ ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਆਦਿ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਦੀ ਪੱਧਰ 'ਤੇ ਵੀ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਈ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਕੇਵਲ ਸ਼ੇਅਰ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਦੇਸ ਦੀ ਅਰਥ-ਵਿਵਸਥਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਖ਼ਬਰਾਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖਤਾ ਸਹਿਤ ਛਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਈ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਕੇਵਲ ਇੰਟਰਨੈੱਟ 'ਤੇ ਹੀ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਭ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਪੋ-ਆਪਣੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿਚਲੀ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਕ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਹੈ। ਕਿਹੜੇ ਦੇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਜਾਂ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਹੈ।ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਂਤਕ ਸਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਵੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਰਟੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਾਰਗੁਜਾਰੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਆਗੂ ਦੀ ਹਰਮਨ-ਪਿਆਰਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਵੀ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਹੀ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਕ ਪਾਰਟੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਆਪਸੀ ਸੰਬੰਧਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਕਿਸੇ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀ ਅੰਦਰੂਨੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ 'ਤੇ ਵੀ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਹਿਜ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਰਚਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀਆਂ

ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀਆਂ ਅਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀਆਂ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਆਮ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਲਾਈ ਲਈ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ? ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਦੇਸਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸਮੁੱਚੀਆਂ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਜਾਂ ਕਾਰਜ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੈ। ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਹੀ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਕ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਤੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਅਫ਼ਸਰਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਮੇਂ-ਸਮੇਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਭ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਘੋਟਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨੰਗਿਆਂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਚਹਿਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਰਮਸਾਰ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਮੂੰਹ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

ਵਪਾਰਕ ਲਾਭ

ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਪਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਲਾਭ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਵਸਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਸ਼ਤਿਹਾਰਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਧਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਜਾਂ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਅਦਾਰੇ ਰੁਜ਼ਗਾਰ ਜਾਂ ਨੌਕਰੀਆਂ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਇਸ਼ਤਿਹਾਰ ਵੀ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਦਾ ਲੋੜਵੰਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਭ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚਲੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਇਸ਼ਤਿਹਾਰ ਦੋ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਚੋਲੇ ਵਾਲੀ ਅਹਿਮ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਸਹਿਜੇ ਹੀ ਨਿਭਾ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੋਟਰ-ਕਾਰਾਂ, ਜ਼ਮੀਨ-ਜਾਇਦਾਦ ਵੇਚਣ-ਖ਼ਰੀਦਣ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਇਸ਼ਤਿਹਾਰ ਵੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਆਮ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਖੇਡ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਯੋਗਤਾਵਾਂ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ, ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮਾਂ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਵੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਸ਼ੇਅਰ ਮਾਰਕੀਟ, ਅੰਤਰ-ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਕਰੰਸੀ, ਸੋਨੇ ਤੇ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਧਾਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਅ, ਮੌਸਮ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ‘ਸੰਪਾਦਕੀ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਬਾਦਲੀਲ ਵਿਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੋਚ ਨੂੰ ਤਿੱਖਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਾਭ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਹਨ।

ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਹਾਨੀਆਂ

ਨਿਰਸੰਦੇਹ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਾਭ ਦੀ ਸੀਮਾ ਨਿਸਚਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਮਾਰੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੁਝ ਹਾਨੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਹਨ।ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਰਾਜਸੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਬਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛਾਪਣ ਦਾ ਨਜ਼ਰੀਆ ਪੱਖਪਾਤੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪਾਠਕ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਵਪਾਰਕ ਨਜ਼ਰੀਏ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਛਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਈ ਲਾਭ ਕਮਾਉਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸੇ ਲਈ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸ਼ਲੀਲਤਾ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਤਸਵੀਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਨਸਨੀਖੇਜ਼ ਖ਼ਬਰਾਂ ਛਾਪ ਕੇ ਪਾਠਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁੰਮਰਾਹ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਜੋਕੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਸੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਲਵਾਈਆਂ ਜਾ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਖ਼ਬਰਾਂ (ਪੇਡ ਨਿਊਜ਼) ਨੇ ਪਾਠਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ। ਘਟੀਆ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਧੀਆ ਇਸ਼ਤਿਹਾਰਬਾਜ਼ੀ, ਜੋਤਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਤਾਂਤਰਿਕਾਂ ਆਦਿ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਇਸ਼ਤਿਹਾਰ ਛਾਪਣਾ ਸਧਾਰਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਧੋਖਾ ਕਰਨ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਹੀ ਹੈ।ਅਜਿਹੇ ਪੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੋਰ ਉਸਾਰੂ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਸਿੱਟਾ ਇਹੋ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਦੇ ਲਾਭ ਤੇ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਦੁਰਵਰਤੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਜੇਕਰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਛਾਪਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੋਬਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਣ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸੋਨੇ ਤੇ ਸੁਹਾਗੇ ਵਾਲੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।

AP Dhillon’s Quest for a Global Punjabi Music Movement

Over the past two decades, Coachella has evolved from its roots as an indie rock haven into a celebration of some of the biggest sounds around the world. Last year’s event showcased superstars including Bad Bunny and Blackpink as headliners, and this year’s lineup is keeping the momentum going with a wide swath of genres, from K-pop to música mexicana and more. 

Indo-Canadian singer and rapper AP Dhillon wants to make sure that Punjabi music benefits from that platform, too. Dhillon is set to perform at Coachella on Sunday, one year after Diljit Dosanjh reportedly became the first artist ever to play a completely Punjabi set at the festival. (Fellow Punjabi Canadian rapper Nav will take the stage right after Dillon’s set).

Speaking with Rolling Stone before his Coachella debut, the singer talked about what to expect for his upcoming set, the recent single he dropped last week with U.K. rapper Stormzy, and turning India and the rest of the world onto Punjabi music.

Going deeper into that, you’re the second Punjabi artist to play Coachella; the first came just a year ago. What do you see as the significance of your set, both for Coachella and for Punjabi music overall? I think it makes sense. There’s a lot of Indians in the U.S., Canada, all over. That’s a huge new audience for [Coachella]. The way we’ve seen Latin music growing, that’s where I think Punjabi music is going to go more and more. But it goes both ways. We get to connect with this side of the world. We get to perform for an audience that might not understand the lyrics, but they’ll like the music, the energy, the flow. I listen to a lot of shit I don’t understand, but I still vibe to it. Latin music — I don’t understand what the fuck they’re saying, but it’s fucking cool. 

Do you think Punjabi music can reach the same kind of audiences that Spanish-language genres have now? Yeah, I think we’re at a stage where the artists are before Bad Bunny’s [level of fame]. Our music is at that stage right now, and it’s gonna hit the next destination. It’s going to help our people,  it’s going to help other artists make their come-up in the future, too.

You just released “Problems Over Peace” with Stormzy last week. That’s your first collaboration featuring a major western artist. How did that come together? When I first moved to Canada, a friend of mine from Mali introduced me to the U.K. rap scene, and I was like “Yo, this is fucking cool.” Around 2016, 2017, I heard Stormzy, and as a fan, I love his music. I made this drill record. It felt short. I needed someone on it. I figured the one guy who could really pull through was Stormzy. He delivers every time. We had a mutual friend reach out and then the rest is history. He sent me his verse, and fuck, it’s cold. It’s hard. I’m happy with it ,because sometimes collaborations really seem forced, like labels making this shit happen.

For the people you’re selling on catching your set this weekend, what should they be expecting for your show? My set’s going to have a bit of everything. I  go from trap to pop to rock. You go around the world, watching that 45-50-minute performance. It’s a lot of different kinds of music, there’s a lot of good stuff there. It’s a new sound, man, it’s a good energy. That’s what they should expect right now. This will be my second time playing guitar on stage. I’m going full rock star mode.

It might go over everyone’s head because it’s not the sound they’re used to. But there will be few people who like it and there will be a few people who will get inspired from it. NPR reportedly in turmoil after editor accuses outlet of liberal bias in bombshell essay

N PR has reportedly been thrown into turmoil after a bombshell essay penned by a veteran editor claimed the broadcaster allowed liberal bias to affect its coverage — with the editor-in-chief telling furious staffers she did not want him to become a “martyr.”

Uri Berliner, a Peabody Award-winning journalist who has worked at NPR for 25 years, called out journalistic blind spots around major news events, including the origins of COVID-19, the war in Gaza and the Hunter Biden laptop, in an essay published Tuesday on Bari Weiss’ online news site the Free Press.

The senior business editor also said the internal culture at NPR had placed race and identity as ”paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace.”

Berliner’s essay sparked a firestorm of criticism from prominent conservatives — with former President Donald Trump demanding NPR’s federal funding be yanked — and has led to internal tumult, the New York Times reported Friday.

The essay was brought up at what was described as a “long-scheduled meet-and-greet” with the hosts of NPR’s biggest shows on Wednesday, where NPR editor-in-chief Edith Chapin reportedly said she did not want Berliner to become a “martyr,” according to the Times.

Others took to the internal messaging system to rail against Berliner’s assertions.

“Mr. Berliner’s essay also sent critical Slack messages whizzing through some of the same employee affinity groups focused on racial and sexual identity that he cited in his essay. In one group, several staff members disputed Mr. Berliner’s points about a lack of ideological diversity and said efforts to recruit more people of color would make NPR’s journalism better,” the Times reported. 

NPR managing editor of standards and practices Tony Cavin disputed Berliner’s assumptions and claimed the essay will likely make it “harder for NPR journalists to do their jobs.”

”The next time one of our people calls up a Republican congressman or something and tries to get an answer from them, they may well say, ‘Oh, I read these stories, you guys aren’t fair, so I’m not going to talk to you,”’ Cavin said.

NPR did not immediately return calls for comment.

Berliner told the Times on Thursday that he didn’t regret publishing the essay, saying he loved NPR and hoped to make it better by “airing criticisms that have gone unheeded by leaders for years.”

Calling the broadcaster a “national trust” that people rely on for fair reporting and top-notch storytelling, he said: ”I decided to go out and publish it in hopes that something would change, and that we get a broader conversation going about how the news is covered.”

Berliner said he hasn’t been disciplined for writing the essay, but he did get a note from his supervisor reminding him that NPR requires employees to clear speaking appearances and media requests with standards and media relations teams.

Some former NPR staffers defended Berliner’s essay.

Jeffrey A. Dvorkin, NPR’s former ombudsman, said Berliner was ”not wrong.” Chuck Holmes, a former managing editor at NPR, called Berliner’s essay ”brave.”

After the essay was published, Berliner said, he received “a lot of support from colleagues, and many of them unexpected, who say they agree with me.”

“Some of them say this confidentially,”  Berliner told NewsNation anchor Chris Cuomo on Tuesday.

Chapin had pushed back on Berliner’s claims of a liberal bias, saying: ”We’re proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories.”

Over my 40 years as a physician-scientist, I’ve had the privilege of advising many patients facing serious medical diagnoses. I’ve seen them go through the excruciating experience of waiting for the results of a critical blood test, biopsy or scan that could dramatically affect their future hopes and dreams.

But this time, I was the one lying in the PET scanner as it searched for possible evidence of spread of my aggressive prostate cancer . I spent those 30 minutes in quiet prayer. If that cancer had already spread to my lymph nodes, bones, lungs or brain, it could still be treated — but it would no longer be curable.

Why am I going public about this cancer that many men are uncomfortable talking about? Because I want to lift the veil and share lifesaving information, and I want all men to benefit from the medical research to which I’ve devoted my career and that is now guiding my care.

Five years before that fateful PET scan, my doctor had noted a slow rise in my PSA, the blood test for prostate-specific antigen. To contribute to knowledge and receive expert care, I enrolled in a clinical trial at the National Institutes of Health, the agency I led from 2009 through late 2021.

At first, there wasn’t much to worry about — targeted biopsies identified a slow-growing grade of prostate cancer that doesn’t require treatment and can be tracked via regular checkups, referred to as “active surveillance.” This initial diagnosis was not particularly surprising. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the United States, and about 40 percent of men over age 65 — I’m 73 — have low-grade prostate cancer . Many of them never know it, and very few of them develop advanced disease.

Why am I going public about this cancer that many men are uncomfortable talking about? Because I want to lift the veil and share lifesaving information.

But in my case, things took a turn about a month ago when my PSA rose sharply to 22 — normal at my age is less than 5. An MRI scan showed that the tumor had significantly enlarged and might have even breached the capsule that surrounds the prostate, posing a significant risk that the cancer cells might have spread to other parts of the body.

New biopsies taken from the mass showed transformation into a much more aggressive cancer. When I heard the diagnosis was now a 9 on a cancer-grading scale that goes only to 10, I knew that everything had changed.

Thus, that PET scan, which was ordered to determine if the cancer had spread beyond the prostate, carried high significance. Would a cure still be possible, or would it be time to get my affairs in order? A few hours later, when my doctors showed me the scan results, I felt a rush of profound relief and gratitude. There was no detectable evidence of cancer outside of the primary tumor.

Later this month, I will undergo a radical prostatectomy — a procedure that will remove my entire prostate gland. This will be part of the same NIH research protocol — I want as much information as possible to be learned from my case, to help others in the future.

While there are no guarantees, my doctors believe I have a high likelihood of being cured by the surgery.

My situation is far better than my father’s when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer four decades ago. He was about the same age that I am now, but it wasn’t possible back then to assess how advanced the cancer might be. He was treated with a hormonal therapy that might not have been necessary and had a significant negative impact on his quality of life.

Because of research supported by NIH, along with highly effective collaborations with the private sector, prostate cancer can now be treated with individualized precision and improved outcomes.

As in my case, high-resolution MRI scans can now be used to delineate the precise location of a tumor. When combined with real-time ultrasound, this allows pinpoint targeting of the prostate biopsies. My surgeon will be assisted by a sophisticated robot named for Leonardo da Vinci that employs a less invasive surgical approach than previous techniques, requiring just a few small incisions.

Advances in clinical treatments have been informed by large-scale, rigorously designed trials that have assessed the risks and benefits and were possible because of the willingness of cancer patients to enroll in such trials.

I feel compelled to tell this story openly. I hope it helps someone. I don’t want to waste time.

If my cancer recurs, the DNA analysis that has been carried out on my tumor will guide the precise choice of therapies. As a researcher who had the privilege of leading the Human Genome Project , it is truly gratifying to see how these advances in genomics have transformed the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

I want all men to have the same opportunity that I did. Prostate cancer is still the No. 2 killer of men. I want the goals of the Cancer Moonshot to be met — to end cancer as we know it. Early detection really matters, and when combined with active surveillance can identify the risky cancers like mine, and leave the rest alone. The five-year relative survival rate for prostate cancer is 97 percent, according to the American Cancer Society , but it’s only 34 percent if the cancer has spread to distant areas of the body.

But lack of information and confusion about the best approach to prostate cancer screening have impeded progress. Currently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all men age 55 to 69 discuss PSA screening with their primary-care physician, but it recommends against starting PSA screening after age 70.

Other groups, like the American Urological Association , suggest that screening should start earlier, especially for men with a family history — like me — and for African American men, who have a higher risk of prostate cancer. But these recommendations are not consistently being followed.

Our health-care system is afflicted with health inequities. For example, the image-guided biopsies are not available everywhere and to everyone. Finally, many men are fearful of the surgical approach to prostate cancer because of the risk of incontinence and impotence, but advances in surgical techniques have made those outcomes considerably less troublesome than in the past. Similarly, the alternative therapeutic approaches of radiation and hormonal therapy have seen significant advances.

A little over a year ago, while I was praying for a dying friend, I had the experience of receiving a clear and unmistakable message. This has almost never happened to me. It was just this: “Don’t waste your time, you may not have much left.” Gulp.

Having now received a diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer and feeling grateful for all the ways I have benefited from research advances, I feel compelled to tell this story openly. I hope it helps someone. I don’t want to waste time.

Get tech out of the classroom before it’s too late.

Jaime Lewis noticed that her eighth-grade son’s grades were slipping several months ago. She suspected it was because he was watching YouTube during class on his school-issued laptop, and her suspicions were validated. “I heard this from two of his teachers and confirmed with my son: Yes, he watches YouTube during class, and no, he doesn’t think he can stop. In fact, he opted out of retaking a math test he’d failed, just so he could watch YouTube,” she said.

She decided to do something about it. Lewis told me that she got together with other parents who were concerned about the unfettered use of school-sanctioned technology in San Luis Coastal Unified School District, their district in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Because they knew that it wasn’t realistic to ask for the removal of the laptops entirely, they went for what they saw as an achievable win: blocking YouTube from students’ devices. A few weeks ago, they had a meeting with the district superintendent and several other administrators, including the tech director.

To bolster their case, Lewis and her allies put together a video compilation of clips that elementary and middle school children had gotten past the district’s content filters.

Their video opens on images of nooses being fitted around the necks of the terrified women in the TV adaptation of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” It ends with the notoriously violent “Singin’ in the Rain” sequence from “A Clockwork Orange.” (Several versions of this scene are available on YouTube. The one she pointed me to included “rape scene” in the title.) Their video was part of a PowerPoint presentation filled with statements from other parents and school staff members, including one from a middle school assistant principal, who said, “I don’t know how often teachers are using YouTube in their curriculum.”

That acknowledgment gets to the heart of the problem with screens in schools. I heard from many parents who said that even when they asked district leaders how much time kids were spending on their screens, they couldn’t get straight answers; no one seemed to know, and no one seemed to be keeping track.

Eric Prater, the superintendent of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, told me that he didn’t realize how much was getting through the schools’ content filters until Lewis and her fellow parents raised concerns. “Our tech department, as I found out from the meeting, spends quite a lot of time blocking certain websites,” he said. “It’s a quite time-consuming situation that I personally was not aware of.” He added that he’s grateful this was brought to his attention.

I don’t think educators are the bad guys here. Neither does Lewis. In general, educators want the best for students. The bad guys, as I see it, are tech companies.

One way or another, we’ve allowed Big Tech’s tentacles into absolutely every aspect of our children’s education, with very little oversight and no real proof that their devices or programs improve educational outcomes. Last year Collin Binkley at The Associated Press analyzed public records and found that “many of the largest school systems spent tens of millions of dollars in pandemic money on software and services from tech companies, including licenses for apps, games and tutoring websites.” However, he continued, schools “have little or no evidence the programs helped students.”

It’s not just waste, very likely, of taxpayer money that’s at issue. After reading many of the over 900 responses from parents and educators to my questionnaire about tech in schools and from the many conversations I had over the past few weeks with readers, I’m convinced that the downsides of tech in schools far outweigh the benefits.

Though tech’s incursion into America’s public schools — particularly our overreliance on devices — hyperaccelerated in 2020, it started well before the Covid-19 pandemic. Google, which provides the operating system for lower-cost Chromebooks and is owned by the same parent company as YouTube, is a big player in the school laptop space, though I also heard from many parents and teachers whose schools supply students with other types and brands of devices.

As my newsroom colleague Natasha Singer reported in 2017 (by which point “half the nation’s primary- and secondary-school students” were, according to Google, using its education apps), “Google makes $30 per device by selling management services for the millions of Chromebooks that ship to schools. But by habituating students to its offerings at a young age, Google obtains something much more valuable”: potential lifetime customers.

The issue goes beyond access to age-inappropriate clips or general distraction during school hours. Several parents related stories of even kindergartners reading almost exclusively on iPads because their school districts had phased out hard-copy books and writing materials after shifting to digital-only curriculums. There’s evidence that this is harmful: A 2019 analysis of the literature concluded that “readers may be more efficient and aware of their performance when reading from paper compared to screens.”

“It seems to be a constant battle between fighting for the students’ active attention (because their brains are now hard-wired for the instant gratification of TikTok and YouTube videos) and making sure they aren’t going to sites outside of the dozens they should be,” Nicole Post, who teaches at a public elementary school in Missouri, wrote to me. “It took months for students to listen to me tell a story or engage in a read-aloud. I’m distressed at the level of technology we’ve socialized them to believe is normal. I would give anything for a math or social studies textbook.”

I’ve heard about kids disregarding teachers who tried to limit tech use, fine motor skills atrophying because students rarely used pencils and children whose learning was ultimately stymied by the tech that initially helped them — for example, students learning English as a second language becoming too reliant on translation apps rather than becoming fluent.

Some teachers said they have programs that block certain sites and games, but those programs can be cumbersome. Some said they have software, like GoGuardian, that allows them to see the screens of all the students in their classes at once. But classroom time is zero sum: Teachers are either teaching or acting like prison wardens; they can’t do both at the same time.

Resources are finite. Software costs money . Replacing defunct or outdated laptops costs money . When it comes to I.T., many schools are understaffed . More of the money being spent on tech and the maintenance and training around the use of that tech could be spent on other things, like actual books. And badly monitored and used tech has the most potential for harm.

I’ve considered the counterarguments: Kids who’d be distracted by tech would find something else to distract them; K-12 students need to gain familiarity with tech to instill some vague work force readiness.

But on the first point, I think other forms of distraction — like talking to friends, doodling and daydreaming — are better than playing video games or watching YouTube because they at least involve children engaging with other children or their own minds. And there’s research that suggests laptops are uniquely distracting . One 2013 study found that even being next to a student who is multitasking on a computer can hurt a student’s test scores.

On the second point, you can have designated classes to teach children how to keyboard, code or use software that don’t require them to have laptops in their hands throughout the school day. And considering that various tech companies are developing artificial intelligence that, we’re meant to understand, will upend work as we know it , whatever tech skills we’re currently teaching will probably be obsolete by the time students enter the work force anyway. By then, it’ll be too late to claw back the brain space of our nation’s children that we’ve already ceded. And for what? So today’s grade schoolers can be really, really good at making PowerPoint presentations like the ones they might one day make as white-collar adults?

That’s the part that I can’t shake: We’ve let tech companies and their products set the terms of the argument about what education should be, and too many people, myself included, didn’t initially realize it. Companies never had to prove that devices or software, broadly speaking, helped students learn before those devices had wormed their way into America’s public schools. And now the onus is on parents to marshal arguments about the detriments of tech in schools.

Holly Coleman, a parent of two who lives in Kansas and is a substitute teacher in her district, describes what students are losing:

They can type quickly but struggle to write legibly. They can find info about any topic on the internet but can’t discuss that topic using recall, creativity or critical thinking. They can make a beautiful PowerPoint or Keynote in 20 minutes but can’t write a three-page paper or hand-make a poster board. Their textbooks are all online, which is great for the seams on their backpack, but tangible pages under your fingers literally connect you to the material you’re reading and learning. These kids do not know how to move through their day without a device in their hand and under their fingertips. They never even get the chance to disconnect from their tech and reconnect with one another through eye contact and conversation.

Jonathan Haidt’s new book, “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness,” prescribes phone-free schools as a way to remedy some of the challenges facing America’s children. I agree that there’s no place for smartphones on a K-12 campus. But if you take away the phones and the kids still have near-constant internet connectivity on devices they have with them in every class, the problem won’t go away.

When Covid hit and screens became the only way for millions of kids to “attend” school, not having a personal device became an equity issue. But we’re getting to a point where the opposite may be true. According to the responses to my questionnaire, during the remote-school era, private schools seemed to rely far less on screens than public schools, and many educators said that they deliberately chose lower-tech school environments for their own children — much the same way that some tech workers intentionally send their kids to screen-free schools.

We need to reframe the entire conversation around tech in schools because it’s far from clear that we’re getting the results we want as a society and because parents are in a defensive crouch, afraid to appear anti-progress or unwilling to prepare the next generation for the future. “I feel like a baby boomer attacking like this,” said Lewis.

But the drawbacks of constant screen time in schools go beyond data privacy, job security and whether a specific app increases math performance by a standard deviation. As Lewis put it, using tech in the classroom makes students “so passive, and it requires so little agency and initiative.” She added, “I’m very concerned about the species’ ability to survive and the ability to think critically and the importance of critical thinking outside of getting a job.”

If we don’t hit pause now and try to roll back some of the excesses, we’ll be doing our children — and society — a profound disservice.

The good news is that sometimes when the stakes become clear, educators respond: In May, Dr. Prater said, “we’re going to remove access to YouTube from our district devices for students.” He added that teachers will still be able to get access to YouTube if they want to show instructional videos. The district is also rethinking its phone policy to cut down on personal device use in the classroom. “For me,” he said, “it’s all about how do you find the common-sense approach, going forward, and match that up with good old-fashioned hands-on learning?” He knows technology can cause “a great deal of harm if we’re not careful.”
