If you’ve held tens of short-term or part-time nanny/childcare roles over the years, share more detail about your most recent roles and shorten down descriptions for your older positions. Don’t have enough space? You could always club roles together, for example ‘2000-2005 – Babysitter (multiple clients)’ .

Will this be your first role in childcare? You should still provide some insight into your career history – and you might have more relevant experience than you initially think! Other care or educational positions, such as a care worker or teaching assistant, require similar skills to most childcare roles – so they’re well worth discussing.

Key responsibilities

Next, use bullet points to detail your key responsibilities and duties within the role.

  • Dealing with challenging behaviour and helping children to develop self-control techniques.
  • Planning and participating in a variety of on and off-site activities.
  • Undertaking sleep-in duties on a rota basis.

Key achievements

Lastly, prove the value you added to the company and/or children you supported, by displaying your achievements within the role.

If you can, quantify your examples with hard facts and figures.

  • Awarded “Child Care Worker of the Month” for 3 months in a single year.
  • Received 10+ written commendations from parents for efficiency, patience and dedication to the welfare of their children.

Next, you need to detail your qualifications or certifications, including where and when you gained them.

While many childcare roles have a low barrier to entry, there are a wide range of qualifications which will benefit a career in the sector, ranging from childcare NVQ’s  and care certificates , all the way to social work and early years degrees .

Relevant certifications and vocational courses, such as First Aid or CPR, will be a good advantage, too.

If this will be your first working role or you’re a school leaver, just list your highest qualifications, such as your GCSE’s or A-Levels.

Interests and hobbies

The hobbies section of your CV is totally optional, but you may use it to list personal pursuits you feel could add value to your application.

Generic hobbies like  ‘going out with friends’ or  ‘reading’  won’t add anything, so leave these out.

The specific skills needed for your CV will vary depending on the specific role, so remember to match your skills up with the job requirements. However, the following skills will be beneficial for most childcare roles:

Pediatric first aid –  Ability to administer emergency first aid to a child with a sudden or chronic illness or injury is essential – an accredited certification is a huge selling point, too.

CPR  – Knowledge and practice of reviving breath in an individual who has stopped breathing.

Health & safety – Keeping children of all ages safe and healthy, working to prevent injuries and illnesses.

Driving – If you’re working as a childminder or nanny, a full driving license is often essential.

Childhood Studies Personal Statement

Children should have somebody that believes in them and supports them to become the person that they aspire to be. Working with children and assisting them in achieving their goals in life is a huge ambition of mine. I enjoy interacting with children on their own level; gaining insight into their perception of the world.

I am currently studying A-levels in Sociology, Philosophy and Ethics and an AS in textiles. These A levels not only equip me for academic life at university but also developed my understanding of early childhood educational studies. Two of the topics of my sociology A-level are dedicated to education and childhood. These topics have given me an understanding of how childhood is not the same for every child because everyone comes from a different background. This is called a social construction. Sociologist Sue Palmer says there are five important things that children need during their childhood. These are play, language, love, education and discipline. Philosophy and Ethics has reconfigured my perception of the universe because it has improved my analytical skills, seeing events form more than one perspective. Studying Textiles has made me improve how I manage my time as it involves me doing practical and theoretical skills for my coursework. This is useful when it comes to having to do work placements with my degree at university. Textile has enhanced my creativity by thinking of different textiles techniques to add to my coursework. People who are involved with working with children will have to think about things from a child’s perspective and need to be creative at solving problems so that the children can understand more easily.

My interest in teaching children developed through my work experience at a local nursery. This involved me providing support to children with mathematics, reading and writing on a one to one and class group basis. I ensured that the pupils that I supported were able to engage in learning and stay on task during the lesson.

I have volunteered at QMC Hospital Nottingham in the adult ward for the last 3 months: providing help and assistance to patients at mealtimes. I interacted with numerous members of patients and staff. This had led to my understanding of the importance of basic routine tasks in a hospital to support patients in creating a sense of stability. I learned quickly how to deal with people who were reliant on me for help. Volunteering is one of the things that I can really do for other people and putting them first. I have also gained knowledge and experience on how to safeguard and promote the welfare of the vulnerable elderly. I have also been involved with Young Enterprise scheme. I had leadership responsibility for marketing and advertisement. My skills in marketing were developed through promoting my brand through talking to the public. These work experiences develop my communication skills. I can now speak clearly, thoughtfully and without feeling nervous.

In 2015, I undertook a voluntary work placement in Tanzania where I supervised a group of children aged between 3 and 5. This is where I discovered that I had a flair for building a good rapport with children without compromising my position of authority. Working with children at those ages is a real critical point of development in their life because given the right opportunities they can develop new skills of understanding the world.

In the future, I aim to work with children. My experiences tell me that this work will be enormously rewarding. I feel the rewards of a professional career in teaching would satisfy the goals I have hoped to achieve for quite a while. I believe that with my enthusiasm, positive attitudes and strong interest in study your course will give me a firm foundation on which I can build my career, working with children. I can think of no better or more satisfying path to pursue.

I first realised that I wanted my future career to be based around working with children completely by accident. I had started a college course which wasn't right for me, and had left during the first year. I then spent several months agonising over what to take the following September, with no feeling of direction. After flicking through what felt like millions of college prospectuses, my eye landed on the childcare and early years section. It had never once occurred to me to go into the Early Years sector before, but for some reason, right at that moment, it just seemed like the right decision to make. I arrived for my first lesson that September, with no idea what to expect and wondering if I'd made the right decision. As soon as the teacher started speaking, I was captivated, and I never looked back. I have always been an extremely curious person, fascinated by people and nature and what makes it all tick. There is nothing, in my opinion, much more fascinating than a child. Watching them grow, develop and learn is one of the most humbling experiences a person can have - there is nothing quite like it to make you realise how precious life is. I am a very passionate person - an attribute which is at its peak when it comes to certain issues surrounding children. My passion and determination to make positive changes for children and to get to a position in which I am capable of doing so is certainly something which helped me through the second year of my college course, which was made more challenging by my becoming pregnant early in the year. Despite my tutor's advice to lower my expectations and aim for a pass, I continued working towards my goal of triple distinction - which I eventually achieved the following December. My daughter has changed and matured me in many ways, and has instilled the firm belief in me that children can teach adults just as much about the world as adults can teach children! I am now able to view the world from an entirely different perspective - from that as a mother, and I feel I now have additional wisdom and skills which would certainly benefit me when working in the Early Years sector. As I have been a full-time Mum since finishing college, I have not yet started work - however I am planning to find a job in the Early Years sector with the qualifications I already have in the near future, which I will hopefully continue along side studying. To ensure that I continue to put into practice the skills I picked up through doing my college course, I have run a voluntary Parent and Toddler group at a local school for the past six months. I enjoy doing this immensely, as it gives me pleasure to know that the work I put into the group benefits the parents and children who attend. Running the group has most certainly improved my organisational skills, and I have put my imagination to good use through planning and putting into practice different arts and crafts activities each week, and thinking of healthy but varied snacks for the children to have. I love to read and write, and enjoy doing both when I get any time to myself. I've always had a vivid imagination and love reading as it enables me to get lost in another world! Indeed, the colourful and vivid imagination that many children possess, and their seemingly endless innocence and faith in the world is something I have always found to be wonderful. I do believe that the first step to working with and for children successfully is to possess at least some of this imagination, and to be able to see and assess the world from a child's point of view. My future plans are to study and to gain lots of experience in the Early Years field, until I am in a position where I am able to make real, positive changes for children, parents and professionals alike in the Early Years sector. I feel that my passion to do this, my knowledge, wisdom and love of children will enable me to achieve this goal.

Positive Economic Data Is Still Hiding Bleak Reality for Families

J ennifer Trippett’s child care center in Bridgeport, West Virginia has 20% of its classrooms sitting empty. This isn’t for a lack of demand, Trippett told the 19th News . Parents are desperate for child care, but Trippett can’t find enough qualified providers for what she can afford to pay. The result is over 400 children are on the waitlist. I seriously doubt that the median national wage increase of 2.2% in 2023 is addressing the biggest economic stressors of those 400 families.

While many economists are celebrating that the country appears to no longer be headed for a recession , many are forgetting to explore a crumbling pillar for families: childcare. As the mother of three young children, I’ve faced many childcare crises over the last four years, and my ability to access reliable childcare impacts nearly every aspect of my personal and professional life. Right now, families with young children are being forced to shoulder the burden of a sector-wide collapse of the childcare industry. For decades, childcare had been expensive and hard to get, but the pandemic wreaked havoc on an industry that was already barely getting by. Before the pandemic, 98% of other occupations paid more than childcare workers earn, and as hiring boomed in retail and other sectors, 100,000 workers left the industry between 2020 and 2022. Between December 2019 and March 2021, 16,000 childcare centers and home-based providers closed their doors for good. Federal government money was the lifeline that kept some programs open at all, first in the form of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, followed by an infusion of cash through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) that raised worker pay and helped struggling centers keep their doors open. In Fall 2023, Congress refused to extend those $24 billion ARPA child care stabilization grants . As this money phases out and individual states are left to fill in its gaps (or in many states, not,) we’re hearing more and more stories from across the country like those of child care center owner Trippett. More woes are likely coming in the form of higher costs for families, cut operating hours, and more worker shortages. As a result of this “cliff,” the Century Foundation predicts the failure to extend the ARPA money could result in 3 million children losing their spots and 70,000 centers across the country closing.

While increased funding of $725 million for Child Care Development Block Grants, and $275 million increase for Head Start fund compared to fiscal year 2023, is a welcome, and rare, bi-partisan funding effort in Biden’s 2024 budget , it’s more of a nod of acknowledgment about the depth of the problem, rather than anywhere close to a meaningful solution.

As as the childcare sector needlessly crumbles, too many leaders with power and influence seem far removed from today’s reality of what families are going through, daily, to make work happen when childcare is this expensive and inaccessible.

So for those who still aren’t quite getting this pain, here’s an analogy. Imagine if much of the country didn't have reliable internet. There were years long waiting lists to get it, and its cost was so high you aren't sure how you'd afford it even if you got off the waitlist. You could hot spot sometimes, for a few hours at a time, but it's compromised and not reliable. Maybe you could work from your car for an hour outside the library, but sometimes the lot is too full when you get there. Sometimes you could go to a friend or family member's house and use theirs, but because the broadband is so precious you don't want to risk damaging the relationship by asking too often. What if every single day you had to cobble together how to find internet from all of these sources just to do your job and provide for your family? This is what it’s like to be a working parent in need of childcare in America.

While the federal government can’t solve all of our problems, it’s maddening because it can solve this one: President Biden has proposed a new program for his 2025 budget where most families would be able to access high-quality childcare for $10 a day or less, but it stands little chance of making headway in the face of Republican opposition.  

This ARPA childcare funding cliff is the perfect storm of timing for parents to feel serious economic doom. Parent Kalisha Sherman told Boise Dev , “We’re paying $400 a week right now just for daycare.” Her child care center in Idaho had to raise prices after it lost its ARPA funding. “It’s more difficult just because like funding for everything is ending all at the same time. So we’ve got the daycare and then we’ve got student loans starting, plus inflation and interest rates are really high. So I think that’s the hardest part about it for us with finances is just all that’s kind of coming down at the same time.”

The childcare crisis isn’t just for families with young children in private programs; after-school care and camps for the four months a year that most kids are not in a K-12 educational setting are also becoming more expensive and fiercely competitive to even get into. Part of why I think so many parents feel anywhere from glum to downright desperate about their childcare situation and how that impacts their economic outlook is that we don’t believe things will get better. So many of the overwhelming hardships families faced during the pandemic like virtual school felt endless, but we knew on some level it was temporary. During the first two years of the pandemic, there were federal programs that materially made families’ lives better, like some limited paid family and sick leave and the Child Tax Credit that lifted over 3 million children out of poverty.

While my family is financially better off than many, the $950 directly deposited into our bank account for my kids or a blissful six months majorly helped cover unexpected childcare costs we had from my kindergartener’s public school being virtual. Do you know what else it did? It improved my outlook on our family finances. Seeing that money show up during a time of personal instability of caring for three little kids, including baby twins, as the pandemic dragged on, while also dealing with ongoing professional turbulence in the unstable industry of journalism felt like a reassuring pat on the back that said, maybe, everything was going to be OK. But since all of these programs were allowed to expire by a Republican Congress and meaningful federal investment in our care infrastructure that was proposed in Biden’s Build Back Better package failed to pass in 2021, we are now faced with what feels like a grim status quo. 2024 economic realities for families are no great mystery novel, they are in fact, a short, predictable, sad story that doesn’t have to end this way.

Childcare teacher slapped 2 kids, grabbed another at N.J. preschool, cops say

A South Brunswick woman has been charged with assaulting children she taught at a childcare school in Robbinsville last month.

Ekta Dwarkesh, 45, slapped two children in the face, causing one to suffer a nosebleed, and grabbed the arm of a third, causing a visible injury, police said. She taught at The Malvern School on Route 33 at the time.

She’s charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child by abuse or neglect, court documents show.
