How to Create a Life-Changing Presentation

' src=

The side lights dim in the auditorium and the speaker walks on stage. As they are introduced you notice something different about them. The way they are dressed commands your attention. They start to speak and you are quickly drawn into a powerful story. There is drama, tension, and intrigue.

Soon you are tracking with them. You can relate to their struggles and you marvel at their tenacity. Soon they share how they overcame obstacles and found a way to prosper. And then they do something amazing. They offer to share their secret with you.

You want to know more. You’ve been where they are, you’ve fought the battle, but you haven’t found a solution. As the speaker goes on, they mention they have a book and a step by step course of action you can take to change your own life.

In your mind, you know one thing. You’re not leaving until you have the answer. You pick up the book, follow the instructions, and your life changes.

Have you been there? Have you heard that presentation? Has your life changed?

My name is John Richardson and I’ve been part of a public speaking organization called Toastmasters International for over fifteen years. In that time I’ve heard hundreds of speeches and presentations, from short five-minute monologues to ninety minute keynotes. Yet in that time I’ve only heard about a dozen, truly motivational presentations. Ones that change your life.

As a speaker, I’ve always wanted to be able to give that kind of presentation. To reach deep down inside and share from the heart. To actually be able to motivate people to change their lives for the better. In my journey, I’ve become a student of speaking and motivational styles. I’ve tried many different things and failed many times, yet a few things emerged that I would like to share with you today. If you are a speaker and want to change the world, you’ll definitely need SPARK.

S.P.A.R.K is…

  • Visual learners. They intake information by what they see;
  • Audio learners. They intake information by what they hear; and
  • Kinesthetic learners. They intake information by what they feel.

Sheryl always arrives at least an hour early. She has bright colored visuals in the form of PowerPoint slides or flip charts. She puts on background music for the audio people as they arrive. She has handouts ready for her kinesthetic guests. But Sheryl goes even further by heating up Chocolate Chip cookies and walking them through the room to add a pleasant aroma. She even adds powerful words and numbers to her slides for the analytics.

  • Knowledge: The best presentations offer something new and unique. There is nothing cliché about them. They offer a take-away, whether that is a handout, book, or video. The audience member has a chance to gain further knowledge. Authors have a definite advantage here. Having a book to sell or a seminar to attend, is a great way to effect change.

Creating a powerful and motivating presentation takes a lot of time, effort, and practice. A great place to start is a local Toastmasters club where you can learn speaking and leadership skills and be able to practice and refine your speech. If you truly want to get up to speed quickly, Ken Davis and Michael Hyatt’s SCORRE conference can teach you powerful presentation skills in just a few days. You’ll be ready for the platform in no time.

If you’re looking for good topics for presentations, you’ve landed on the right page. In this article, you’ll find plenty of good presentation topics, tips on choosing the most suitable topic for you, and essential design elements to make your presentation a success.

Many factors go into an excellent presentation. You need to have confident body language and engage your audience to hold their attention. You also need eye-catching visual aids like images, data visualizations, GIFs, and others (all of which you can find in Prezi ), not to mention a great opening to grab attention and a strong closing line to stay memorable. However, the most essential aspect of your presentation is the topic. It’s the core of your presentation, so it has to be strong, insightful, attention-grabbing, and appealing to yourself and your audience in order to evolve into a successful presentation everyone will love.

How to choose a good presentation topic

There are millions of topics you could create a presentation on, but what defines a good topic? If you’re struggling to either come up with a good topic for a presentation or you can’t decide between multiple ones, here are a few questions you should ask yourself before choosing a topic.

What’s the goal of your presentation?

When you’re choosing a topic, consider the meaning behind it. Ask yourself what the purpose of talking about this topic is, and what you want to say about it. Whatever topic you choose to present, the conclusion needs to provide a takeaway or lesson you want to communicate to your audience. A meaningful goal will make your presentation more memorable.

Are you interested in the topic?

If you’re not interested in the topic, others won’t be curious either. Interest, enthusiasm, and passion enrich your presentation and are noticeable when presenting. Interest shines through and inspires others to find the topic as fascinating as you do. Think about the last time you saw someone sharing something they were passionate about – their excitement drew people in to pay closer attention to what they were saying.

When choosing a topic, you need to find it or a particular angle of it interesting for yourself. For example, perhaps you’re not a pop music enthusiast, but you’re passionate about studying cultural phenomena. In this case, you can talk about pop music’s influence on early 2000s youth culture.

Will your audience find this topic relatable?

While you have to find the topic you’re presenting interesting, you also have to think about your audience. When choosing a subject, consider your audience’s background in terms of demographics, interests, culture, and knowledge level about the topic. Think about what others will find fascinating and relevant, so they’re not bored or confused during your presentation.

Do you have prior experience or knowledge about this topic?

Personal experiences are always great to share in a presentation, providing your unique perspective for anyone listening. While you can easily prepare your presentation based on a quick Google search, it won’t make the same lasting impact on your audience. Choose a topic you have some prior knowledge about, or have an interesting opinion you can share with others. It’ll make your presentation more engaging and memorable.

How to create a good presentation

If you know what you want to present on, it’s time to create an impactful presentation that grabs everyone’s attention. Presentation design plays a crucial role in how your presentation is received and remembered. To stand out and leave a memorable impact on your audience, create a Prezi presentation. Instead of a linear, slide-based presentation, offer an engaging and dynamic storytelling experience to your audience. Breathe life into your presentation with motion, zoom, and spatial relationships. When creating your presentation, consider the following three essential elements:

Visuals play a significant part in presentation design. They evoke emotions, make a memorable impact, and give more context to the story. Not to mention, 65% of people are visual learners , so visual aids are helpful when explaining a complex topic.

In your presentation, include different types of visuals, such as images, videos, GIFs, and stickers, all of which you can find in Prezi’s content library. When selecting your visuals, consider what’s relevant and brings additional value to the story. Only add what’s meaningful and necessary. A video or image at the right place and time will enrich the viewing experience and make your presentation more memorable.

The layout of your presentation is the structure of your story. It’ll help you introduce the topic, intrigue your audience, and unfold the layers of your topic one by one until you disclose your main arguments and summarize the presentation. A good presentation layout has a hierarchical, chronological, or logical flow that leads the viewer from start to finish.

If you’re creating a Prezi presentation, you can create a dynamic storytelling experience by experimenting with your layout. Instead of going from slide to slide, you can zoom in and out of topics and experiment with different shapes, animations, and effects that draw the viewer into your story world. Here’s an example of a Prezi presentation with a great storytelling layout:

Author: Lydia Antonatos

Data visualizations can elevate your presentation from being a good one to a great one. By providing data behind your arguments, you’ll appear more trustworthy and confident in your audience’s eyes.

Add charts, graphs, interactive maps, and more to your presentations with Prezi Design. You can choose from a wide selection of charts and maps to illustrate your data. With interactive elements, you’ll be able to engage your audience and make a memorable impact.

Engaging visuals, a well-structured layout, and relevant data visualizations will provide a great starting base to create a memorable presentation. Discover other tips and tricks that make your presentation effective and capture people’s attention.

Choosing a topic for a presentation isn’t easy. When selecting a topic, think about the goal of your presentation, your interest and knowledge about the topic, and whether or not your audience will find it relevant and interesting for them. Also, get inspired by other topics that’ll help you figure out what you want to talk about. Lastly, when creating your presentation, consider the impact of visuals, layout, and data visualizations. To simplify the creation process, follow the step-by-step process of making a presentation with helpful tips and resources.

Wacky Rig: A Complete Guide on Rigging, Setups, and How to Fish It

Wacky rigs are ideal for throwing around docks during the post spawn.

A wacky rig is perhaps the most subtle, natural, and non-invasive presentation bass anglers use. It’s a very slow and finessed presentation unlike a crankbait or chatterbait.

But the true beauty of the wacky rig is that bass will bite it regardless of the conditions. They’ll bite a wacky rig when the bite is wide open, and when they won’t eat anything else. It doesn’t matter what mood the fish are in; they can’t resist the slow sinking wiggle of a wacky rig.

Whether you’re fishing boat docks, laydowns, grass lines, or rock piles, having a wacky rig tied on and ready to deploy is a must. Here’s everything you need to know about fishing a wacky rig.

The Wacky Rig

The standard wacky rig is a 2/0 octopus-style hook rigged through an O-ring that’s been placed in the center of a 4- or 5-inch stick bait. While the O-ring isn’t always necessary, it’s helpful in prolonging the life of your stick bait. O-ring or not, the wacky rig works so well because it’s simple. As the bait slowly sinks through the water column both ends of the stick bait shimmy, driving bass nuts.

How to Rig a Wacky Rig

A wacky rig should take no more than 30-seconds to be ready to fish. The longest part of the process is attaching the O-ring to your stick bait of choice. Below is a step-by-step guide.

Step 1 : Select your hook. Some offerings include weed guards, which can be helpful when fishing around grass and heavy cover.

Step 2 : Take your stick bait of choice and slide it into an O-ring tool . With this tool, you’ll simply slide the O-ring down the shaft and place it in the middle of your stick bait.

Step 3 : Thread your hook between the O-ring and stick bait.

Step 4 : Using a Palomar knot , tie your line to the hook.

What Makes the Wacky Rig Effective?

Scott Einsmann

There are a lot of baits and lures out there that are made to catch fishermen rather than fish. As you walk down the aisle at your favorite tackle shop, you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. Topwater baits with flapping arms and spinners, jerkbaits with blades on the back treble, and lures that imitate animals like rats and ducks . While some of those baits may work in certain situations, oftentimes they’re more than you need.

A wacky rig is the exact opposite.

Its simplicity makes it arguably the most effective soft plastic fishing technique to ever exist. The subtle, slow-sinking shimmy tugs on a bass’s instincts and triggers them to feed. Whether they believe the stick bait is a baitfish, a leech, or even a snake, they can’t resist the action of a wacky rig.

Bass are ambush predators, and they often stage near cover like dock pilings, laydowns, and grass lines waiting for unsuspecting prey. The wacky rig seems to trigger their ambush reflex as it slowly sinks near the cover. The reason is in the action.

In my opinion, the wacky rig represents a dying baitfish. The slender profile resembles a shad, and the shimmy of the stick bait as it falls on a slack line looks exactly like a baitfish sinking through the water column — wiggling its head and tail simultaneously.

For a deep dive on the wacky rig, check out this great video from my friend Flukemaster.

When to Throw a Wacky Rig

If you’re trying to decide when to throw a wacky rig, ask yourself this simple question: Am I fishing for bass? If the answer is yes, regardless of the time of year, a wacky rig will get you bites.

Now, as with all year-round techniques, there is a prime-time to fish a wacky rig, and to me, that’s the post-spawn. In the post-spawn, bass get lethargic. They’re recovering from the spawn and they don’t have the energy to go offshore and chase schools of baitfish in deep water. Typically, once the spawn ends, the bass head to the first piece of cover they can find in 8 to 12 feet of water to recuperate and feed on easy prey.

That’s why fishing a wacky rig during the post spawn around dock pilings and laydowns can be some of the best fishing you’ll experience all year. The wacky rig is an easy meal for tired bass. It’s similar to running a marathon and being offered a cheeseburger 30 minutes after you cross the finish line. You probably can’t resist.

Another reason as to why the wacky rig is a go-to during the post-spawn is that there are plenty of bass still in the shallows guarding their fry. When your bait approaches the small school of baby bass, the fry-guarding bigger bass will treat the bait like an intruder and eat it to protect their offspring. It’s not often that you’ll have the rod ripped out of your hands when fishing a wacky rig, but this is one of those times.

The Best Wacky Rig Rod Setups, Baits, and Gear

Here’s the rod, reel, line, hooks, baits, and O-ring tool you’ll need to fish a wacky rig.

Picking the Right Rod

When faced with selecting the right rod for your wacky rig, you’re in luck. Most of the best spinning rods will do the trick. If you have a favorite spinning rod for fishing light Texas rigs or weightless worms, then you probably don’t need to go shopping. But, if you’re looking to upgrade to the perfect wacky rig rod, look no further than the Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris CarbonLite Wacky Rig spinning rod. At 7 feet, 2 inches and a medium action, this rod is specifically designed for making long, accurate casts with a wacky rig. It’s got a stiff enough backbone to make sure the fish is hooked well, but a soft enough tip to make sure they don’t come off during the fight.

Picking the Right Reel

Similarly to the rod you choose, your reel can be just about any of the best spinning reels you have in your arsenal. But, if you’re looking for the perfect wacky rig reel, I would recommend going with a lightweight spinning reel that offers a high-speed gear ratio. That will be important for quickly picking up the slack in your line after you feel the bite to ensure a good hook set. For me, the Lew’s HyperMag Magnesium spinning reel in a size 200 is the perfect choice.

Baits

In my experience, the saltier the stick bait, the longer they’ll hold on after a bite. With that in mind, I’ve almost exclusively used a Gary Yamamoto Senko . The high salt content in their soft plastic stick bait just seems to add more action and increases the fall rate when compared to some other stick baits. If you’re looking for another option to add to your stick bait arsenal, I’ve also had some great luck with a Berkley PowerBait MaxScent The General Worm . While the salt content might not be quite as high, the addition of the MaxScent can sometimes be the ticket, especially when fishing more heavily pressured bodies of water.

As far as the size of your stick bait goes, picking between a 4- or 5-inch bait is all you really need. I personally prefer the 5-inch options as they tend to offer more action, but will go with a 4-inch bait if I’m fishing a smaller pond or lake that offers smaller baitfish. Always try to match the size of your bait to the typical baitfish in the body of water.

Hooks

The hook you decide to use for your wacky rig is critical. While there are plenty of options out there, I’ve always had luck with the 2/0 TroKar weedless wacky worm hooks . I prefer the weedless option as I’m typically fishing a wacky rig around heavy cover, laydowns, or docks that are surrounded by grasses like hydrilla and milfoil. The weedless hook might not keep every strand of grass off, but every little bit helps.

Another great option in wacky rig hooks for folks trying to step up their terminal tackle game is the VMC wacky rigging kit . The kit offers regular wacky hooks, weedless hooks, and even weighted wacky hooks for deep water applications.

O-Ring Tool

The O-ring is an optional addition, but one that I tend to lean on as it extends the life of my bait. There isn’t much to the O-rings themselves, but getting them on the stick bait without an O-ring tool can be taxing. My favorite O-ring tool is the Bass Pro Shops Floating Quick Rigger Tool . The fact that it floats sold me on it, and it works exactly how it’s supposed to.

The last piece of gear you’ll need is the line on your reel. Avid bass anglers often fish spinning reels with a braid-to-fluorocarbon leader. For my braided line, I like to go with 10-pound Daiwa J-Braid , but most braided lines will do the trick. As for the fluorocarbon leader, I lean on 8-pound Sunline FC .

Final Thoughts

Throwing a wacky rig is never a bad option. There are plenty of professional bass anglers that still rely on a wacky rig over the course of a four-day tournament to get much needed bites to cash checks. If the pros are using it, that’s a good sign that you should follow suit. Tie one on and it won’t let you down.

Androscoggin County hears presentation to combine 911 services with Auburn, Lewiston

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

May 8—AUBURN — Androscoggin County's communications and dispatch center and the Lewiston-Auburn 911 Emergency Communications System may merge into a single entity under a proposal from Auburn Mayor Jeff Harmon.

Harmon made a presentation Wednesday to the Androscoggin County Commission to discuss how such a plan could work, potential financial models and where they could find savings.

With Auburn planning to build a new public safety building and the county planning to move the sheriff's department, including the dispatch center to Center Street, Harmon told the commissioners that consolidating 911 services should be explored by Auburn, Lewiston and the county.

"This seems like an appropriate time to have a conversation about whether consolidation is a potential avenue that the three legislative bodies could agree on and potentially save $3 million in construction costs and not build communication buildings a mile apart from one another," Harmon said.

The proposed combined 911 center would be under the jurisdiction of the county.

The cost for the two centers combined is now $3.7 million., Harmon said. The county's budget is $1.3 million and the L-A 911 center costs $2.4 million.

Two representatives each from Auburn, Lewiston and the county have held a handful of meetings to brainstorm possible solutions to combine both centers, Harmon said.

Harmon and Auburn City Administrator Phil Crowell attended the commissioners' meeting, but no one from Lewiston attended.

When Commissioner Edouard Plourde of Lewiston asked if the city councils in both cities were aware of the discussion, Harmon said they were.

Harmon added that it was important that the consolidation "works for Auburn, works for Lewiston and works for the county."

"Obviously, lots of operational discussions have to take place to try to identify how you might put together a consolidated system," he said.

The working model being discussed is to have the communication center become a department under county jurisdiction with a director reporting to the county administrator. A separate policy board would be formed to determine operational guidelines.

Among the issues that need to be worked out is how to combine the employees under one umbrella.

This is not the first time consolidating the two agencies has been discussed. Sheriff Eric Samson, who also is now interim county administrator, proposed a merger in 2021, but the plan went nowhere.

How to pay for it is still under consideration. Harmon presented different models for the commissioners to consider. The price for service could be determined by population, valuation, call volume or added fees. Lisbon handling much of their own dispatching and Poland contracting for services could complicate a countywide cost determination, unless that changes.

Because county taxes paid by Auburn and Lewiston residents help pay for the county dispatch system not utilized by the two cities, the county added a fee structure for the other county municipalities to lessen the amount of money collected by taxes.

"Lewiston and Auburn could argue that they are now subsidizing county operations," Samson said. "They will experience the most savings. But how will this work for everybody? What's the happy medium?"

"The funding is up to the commission and the city councils," he added.

Still in the early stages and with lots of planning and decisions required in the next few months before a merger becomes a reality, Harmon is convinced that combining 911 services makes perfect sense.

"I feel there is a clear benefit," Harmon said. "There's a construction cost benefit. And just from good governance standpoint, the thought that you need two 911 dispatch centers a mile from each other in a county of 124,000 people seems like common sense."

Opinion: Salt Lake City School District’s restroom presentation harms students. As nonbinary and transgender educators, we see the damage.

The directive to give presentations in every single classroom created widespread harm and put educators in precarious positions to balance their “professionalism” with their humanity..

(Rick Bowmer | AP) Bonneville Elementary School 5th grader Graham Beeton, waves to fellow students during a block party supporting trans and non binary students and staff Monday, April 29, 2024, in Salt Lake City. Utah will become the latest state to implement restrictions for transgender people using school bathrooms and locker rooms in public schools and government-owned buildings when key components of a law passed by the Republican controlled Legislature take effect May 1.

On May 1, HB 257 went into effect in K-12 public schools. But for us, transgender and nonbinary educators in the Salt Lake City School District, the effect has been felt for weeks. We feel compelled to speak as private citizens, not as representatives of the district or the schools we work in, due to the impact on our queer and transgender community in Salt Lake City.

We chose to work in this district specifically because of its commitment to equity. Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) has a vision statement that reads “Excellence and Equity: every student, every classroom, every day” in addition to being the first “ Dignity District ” nationwide, with the commitment “to learning and work environments where everyone is treated with dignity.” Yet, SLCSD’s directive to have teachers give classroom presentations about HB 257 undermines its own commitment to dignity and equity, resulting in direct harm to transgender students, educators and their allies.

SLCSD created presentations for grades K-5 and 6-12 which stated that “new legislation requires us” to tell students they needed to use the bathroom of the gender they were assigned at birth. In the creation of these presentations , SLCSD failed to recognize the impact this would have on teachers, counselors, administrators and psychologists who were left with no support or resources to honor our own dignity. While the district’s recent newsletter stated that it would “remain committed to making sure our schools remain safe, welcoming places for all our students, families, and staff,” we were not provided with adequate means of support to do so.

Instead, we as transgender and nonbinary educators took on the labor to answer questions from coworkers on how to best support our students. With no district acknowledgment of the pain it caused us, transgender and nonbinary educators were also expected to give this presentation to our students, directly harming them and betraying our community when we know exactly what the implications are — 56% of transgender and nonbinary youth in Utah seriously considered suicide in 2022 . The district did not recognize this potential for harm in any communications to faculty, staff or families.

We took it upon ourselves to create our own presentations filled with local and national resources, support systems and hotlines, crafted for both secondary and elementary communities — the resources to help fellow educators support impacted students and families that our district should have created. We shared these with the educators we could within our reach. Subsequently, we watched as some of our students’ fiercest allies and our schools’ kindest hearts experienced the chilling effect of the presentation: Pride flags, safe school posters and pronoun pins were fearfully stowed away. We continue to question: How does this make our district safe and welcoming?

In secondary schools, regardless of their gender identity, students questioned why this was the action the district decided to take when their friends in other districts were not subject to the same trauma and harm. Several stated they would rather the district make a presentation about vaping, drug use and truancy in the bathrooms instead — and stop targeting their trans and nonbinary peers. At the elementary level, young trans and nonbinary students already struggle to get peers and teachers to acknowledge and understand their identities. Many aren’t even “out,” choosing to be accepted simply for who they are without a label that could subject them to interrogation. Coupling this reality with the introduction of HB 257 means we have students of all ages, K-12, who had their right to use the bathroom become subject to classroom discussion.

We recognize that SLCSD needs to ensure they comply with state law and the specific directives of HB 257. However, the directive to give presentations in every single classroom created widespread harm and put educators in precarious positions to balance their “professionalism” with their humanity. SLCSD did not provide justification for choosing to present the presentations over the methods other districts in our state used to notify students of HB 257.

We call for SLCSD to recognize the impact that it had on transgender, nonbinary and allied educators, students, staff and administrators. The effects of this erasure by the district were unnecessary, undignified and dehumanizing. The presentations did not give us reason to believe our district’s stated values and vision statement.

Additionally, we need actionable, tangible changes to create safe, equitable and dignified environments for everyone who works and learns in SLCSD. We ask the district to contract a professional development session on LGBTQIA+ inclusion, preferably through a local organization. We also ask that SLCSD conduct a thorough audit of their policies in the wake of new federal Title IX guidance which states that sex-separated programs and activities, including bathrooms, cannot exclude a person from a space consistent with their gender identity.

We have seen displays of love and support for transgender and nonbinary students and staff both in and out of our buildings and recognize its positive impact. We hope that SCLSD can join in these displays and that these actions will hopefully ensure that our district’s transgender and nonbinary community never feels this way again.
