Warren Buffett: Developing this skill can make 'a major difference in your future earning power'

thumbnail

If you want to get ahead, focus on your communication skills, billionaire investor Warren Buffett advises.

"A relatively modest improvement can make a major difference in your future earning power, as well as in many other aspects of your life," he told Gillian Zoe Segal in an interview for her 2015 book, "Getting There: A Book of Mentors."

Honing this skill could even increase your worth by 50%, Buffett said in a video posted on LinkedIn last year .

That's because, "what's really essential is being able to get others to follow your ideas," the Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO told Segal. "If you're a salesperson, you want people to follow your advice. If you're a management leader, you want them to follow you in business."

What's really essential is being able to get others to follow your ideas. Warren Buffett chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway

Communication isn't something that came naturally to Buffett. "Up until the age of 20, I was absolutely unable to speak in public," he told Segal. "Just the thought of it made me physically ill." When he was at Columbia Business School, he decided to do something about it and paid $100 to take a Dale Carnegie public speaking course.

The class met once a week for a couple of months, but Buffett continued to practice public speaking even after it ended. "As soon as the course was over, I went to the University of Omaha and said, 'I want to start teaching,'" he recalled. "I knew that if I did not speak in front of people quickly I would lapse back to where I'd started. I just kept doing it, and now you can't stop me from talking!"

To this day, the 89-year-old considers that $100 class one of the best investments he's ever made.

"The impact that class had on my life was huge," said Buffett.

He doesn't have his diploma from the University of Nebraska or Columbia on display in his office, but he does have the Dale Carnegie graduation certificate visible. It "gave me the most important degree I have," he said, adding: "It's certainly had the biggest impact in terms of my subsequent success."

Warren Buffett's investor presentation slides

Warren Buffett's investor presentation slides

May 3, 2020 by Jan Schultink

This tweet flew by about Warren Buffett’s slides during his annual investor meeting.

VCs: “please make sure you get someone to design your slides or nobody will take you seriously.” Warren Buffet: pic.twitter.com/viu7wG17GK — Yuri Sagalov (@yuris) May 2, 2020

A sans serif font and centering the text would have made it look better, but overall, this slide is actually not that bad. One big message without distractions. (If Warren had used SlideMagic with this template, his slide would have looked like this)

Screenshot 2020-05-03 07.34.29.png

Other slides are less crisp though, as seen in the example below:

Screenshot 2020-05-03 07.24.07.png

But, Warren does not read out the bullet points, he tells a story starting with background about his father. People will read the slide for 2 seconds, wonder about the quote, and then focus all attention back on him.

OK, I could not resist, SlideMagic would have produced the following slide (a quick search for “1930” in the built-in Pixabay image search delivers good results)

Screenshot 2020-05-03 07.51.59.png

I would put the quote on a completely separate slide, if at all.

Coming back to the first tweet. If you are Warren Buffett, then you get away with pretty much any slide design. On the contrary, making it all too fancy is a direct contradiction to his modest life style. If you are not Warren Buffett, putting in 2 seconds worth of effort with SlideMagic will definitely make a difference.

I tagged these 2 slide examples with “buffet” in SlideMagic, you can use them in your own designs and find them in the presentation app , or download them here.

Buffett Suggests Radical Approach To End U.S. Deficit In '5 Minutes' – But It Involves Disqualifying Members Of Congress Based On The Debt

O ver a decade ago, Warren Buffett , the legendary investor and philanthropist, humorously suggested an unconventional plan that he believed could address the United States’ escalating deficit issue. During a live interview on CNBC with Becky Quick in 2011, Buffett proposed a legislative approach to incentivize Congress to manage the nation’s finances more responsibly.

  • Are you rich? Here’s what Americans think you need to be considered wealthy.
  • Can you guess how many Americans successfully retire with $1 million saved? The percentage may shock you .

“I could end the deficit in five minutes,” Buffett said. “You just pass a law that says that any time there’s a deficit of more than three percent of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election.” His proposal, though delivered with a chuckle, carried an undeniable logic – by directly tying lawmakers’ political futures to the nation’s fiscal health, they would have a powerful incentive to rein in spending and balance the budget.

As the discussion continued, Buffett extended his critique and call for accountability to corporate America, urging the business community to advocate for fiscal responsibility on a national scale. He highlighted the paramount importance of maintaining the nation’s creditworthiness, drawing parallels between personal financial habits and national fiscal management. Just as individuals face consequences for poor financial practices, such as late payments adversely affecting credit ratings, Buffett argued that a country’s fiscal mismanagement could severely undermine its standing and credibility in the global credit market.

Though Buffett delivered his statement with a blend of jest and seriousness, the underlying message struck a chord with many Americans: the urgent need for fiscal responsibility and the potential power of aligning lawmakers’ incentives with the country’s long-term financial health. However, Buffett acknowledged the inherent irony and challenge in his proposal – the individuals who would need to enact such a law are the same ones who would risk their careers by doing so, presenting a formidable conflict of interest.

Trending: How to turn a $100,000 investment into $1 Million — and retire a millionaire.

Now, more than a decade after Buffett’s comments, the U.S. deficit has grown even larger , transforming what was once a facetious remark into a prescient reflection on the structural challenges of managing national debt responsibly. As the deficit continues to be a pressing concern for policymakers and citizens alike, revisiting Buffett’s suggestion offers a moment to ponder the complexities of fiscal policy, the difficulties of political action in the face of personal interests and the ongoing search for effective, pragmatic solutions to ensure the nation’s economic sustainability.

Buffett’s proposal, though not meant to be taken as a literal blueprint, emphasizes a key point about the nature of political decision-making and the potential impact of well-designed incentives. His specific idea may have been tongue-in-cheek, but the principle of accountability and consequence for fiscal mismanagement remains an argument for change.

While individuals cannot directly influence national fiscal policy, they can exercise control over their personal finances. Consulting a financial adviser can provide valuable guidance on making informed decisions, managing debt responsibly and developing a long-term plan for financial well-being.

Just as Buffett advocated for aligning incentives with desired outcomes on a national scale, individuals can align their spending and saving habits with their financial goals through disciplined planning and expert advice. By taking charge of the areas within their control, citizens can lead by example and contribute to an overall climate of fiscal responsibility.

Smartphone maker Xiaomi switches from Apple to Tesla challenger as its first EV racks up 120,000 orders in 36 hours

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun at the launch event of the SU7, the smartphone maker’s first electric vehicle, on March 28 in Beijing.

Anyone who’s tried a Xiaomi smartphone knows it’s a worthy competitor to the iPhone. Now the question is, will Xiaomi present the same kind of challenge to Tesla as to Apple?

On Thursday, the Chinese juggernaut launched its first electric vehicle, the SU7 sedan. Billionaire founder and CEO Lei Jun—a household name in China— said at the presentation in Beijing, “Many people ask me who the Xiaomi SU7 is built for. My answer is, isn’t it time for Tesla Model 3 users to upgrade?”

The entry of yet another deep-pocketed rival in China comes at a difficult time for Elon Musk’s carmaker. Last week, Bloomberg reported that Tesla had reduced EV production at its Shanghai factory amid intense competition and sluggish growth in China. Tesla’s market cap has fallen about 30% this year, spurring the company to scrap Musk’s no-advertising mantra . Tesla also faces competition from China’s Warren Buffett–backed BYD , which dethroned it a few months ago as the world’s top EV seller.

Of course, Tesla has already proved itself as a leading EV maker, while Xiaomi is new in the space.

“In the three years of developing this car, my biggest realization is that making cars is extremely difficult,” Lei said on Thursday. “Even a giant like Apple gave up on it.”

In February, Lei responded to Apple ending its EV project, saying he was “ shocked ” by the decision. He’s cited Apple cofounder Steve Jobs as a primary inspiration to become an entrepreneur.

Xiaomi, which also makes smart TVs and home appliances, enjoys Apple-like popularity in China.

Big bet on EVs

Lei claimed on Thursday that the SU7, available only in China to start, beats the Tesla Model 3 on 90% of specifications, with Xiaomi needing a few more years to catch up on the rest. He said the sedan had a minimum driving range of 700 kilometers (nearly 435 miles) versus 606 for the Model 3. The base model will sell for under $30,000, cheaper than the Model 3 in China.

Lei admitted his company will be losing money on every vehicle it sells for the time being. In December, he said that Xiaomi would spend 10 times the labor and investment carmakers usually commit to a new model. But, he added on Thursday, “Xiaomi has enough cash reserves to cope with any fierce competition in the next five years.”

Time will tell if Lei made the right call by entering the EV market or if Xiaomi should have veered away as Apple did. Plenty of EV startups once valued in the billions are now struggling .

“The risk is that they focus too much on the EV space and lose focus on the sectors and products that got them there,” Tu Le, founder of consultancy Sino Auto Insights, told Reuters.

But Xiaomi is off to a strong start , at least, with the company reporting that it had received 120,000 firm orders for the SU7 in 36 hours, meaning this year’s production capacity is sold out.
