‘We know our potential’: Presentation College volleyball retains defensive core and heads into the fall season on a mission
Last year had its challenges on teams all across the country, but Presentation College’s volleyball team was placed in a unique system with half of its season in fall and the other half in spring.
The split season, devised specifically for the pandemic, was a marathon for all volleyball teams in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and created some ripples for rosters.
The Saints had to deal with losing two outside hitters from their starting rotation to graduation, along with injuries in the middle hitter position. These changes caused the large junior class to step into leadership roles and fill what used to be the “bigger parts” of the team in the later half.
“Transferring into the spring and having to fill those spots was a tough aspect, but I think we were doing it by the end,” outside hitter Evy Peterson said.
More PC: Football searches for much-needed normalcy ahead of upcoming season
Presentation ended up taking two wins in the spring season, including a conference match against Valley City State that went into match point. They eventually ended their season in the first round of the postseason when Viterbo University swept them. However, their work from that moment isn’t finished.
“Our conference is pretty good, and there are a lot of big teams out there,” middle hitter Constence Rollins said. “But we battled with them the whole time. It’s exciting because I can see us getting on top and staying up there because everyone has their weak spots, we’ve got to find them and stay on them.”
Once considered a younger team, the junior class of ten now transitions into a large senior group ready to take on a more traditional season.
“That gave us the extra boost going into this season. We had people filling in those senior roles starting last year already so that just gives us another foot up,” defensive specialist Laura Babcock said.
Babcock, along with Kenzie Kuxhaus, Cassidy Keller, and Brook Russell, returns to showcase their strongest aspect in their defense. Babcock leads the group with 471 digs, while Kuxhaus tallied 317 in her first season.
“We have a really strong defensive crew that we’re excited to bring back because they know the expectations and they know that defense is our strong point of the game,” head coach Chelsey Albrecht said.
Their main focus now is getting their offense on track, along with proving the polls wrong.
The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) released the coaches’ poll ahead of the upcoming season that placed PC seventh out of eight teams.
“I don’t like that we’re so low, I don’t think that was a representation of how we are,” Babcock said.
Peterson added: “We know our potential and we’ve seen it in games as well. Those preseason polls aren’t our potential so we’ll go out there and beat that.”
Over the offseason, Albrecht and her staff sought out to fill the gaps the team needed to fill offensively, adding on Watertown graduate Olivia Corey at setter and bringing in more outside hitters to round out a group of ten freshmen.
“We’re a new team. We have to take what we did in the spring, but we have to incorporate our freshmen into our squad. You take what your strengths are and what strengths you’re bringing in and work to mesh them together so you can put the complete, best package that you can on the court,” Albrecht said.
Creating chemistry as a team will have less obstacles this year compared to last season where restrictions stifled most bonding attempts. Less disruption in the season from a split year will make an impact on teams all across the conference.
“It’s exciting because we didn’t get to bond last year because we had to quarantine and we had the pause and then all the rules around COVID, so that was hard to bond as a team,” Rollins said. “But now we get a chance to see each other every single day because we’re putting in hours of long practices, weights, meetings, workouts, so it’s going to be exciting to see how we progress even just from fall camp.”
The Saints start their season against Dakota Wesleyan at home on Aug. 24. From then on, they’ll do everything they can to put the preseason expectations behind them.
“Personally, it’s kind of fun being the underdog. I like coming in there and just trying to prove everyone wrong. That’s always a fun aspect. Obviously, our team sets our standards and our goals high, and that’ll be fun to see where we’re at,” Peterson said.

College sports | no. 1 ucla, no. 2 long beach state vie for ncaa men’s volleyball title, the bruins seek their second consecutive championship in saturday’s final against host lbsu.
The Pyramid will show itself off again on Saturday afternoon when the top-seeded UCLA and second-seeded Long Beach State men’s volleyball teams collide in their nationally televised national championship match.
The defending champion Bruins (25-5) and LBSU (27-2) split their regular-season matches in February, each winning in four sets on their home court. UCLA will be making its 28th appearance in the national title match compared with 10 for Long Beach, which has won 19 consecutive matches at the Pyramid.
Because the field was increased from six to eight teams this year, the Pyramid has already hosted more matches this week than any other NCAA men’s volleyball tournament, each attracting an energetic fan base and others who just enjoy watching elite competition.
Many longtime observers said Thursday’s scintillating semifinal match between Long Beach and third-seeded Grand Canyon was the loudest it’s ever been inside the Pyramid, especially as LBSU rallied from an 0-2 deficit to win the final three sets .
“I couldn’t even hear my own thoughts,” Long Beach outside hitter Nathan Harlan said of the environment after he blocked a shot to cap a decisive run in the third set. “I kind of looked around to see why I couldn’t hear anything and I just saw thousands of Long Beach fans cheering on.”
Harlan said the energy caused him to briefly freeze in the moment.
“I tried to turn and I got goosebumps,” he said. “I couldn’t move for a second because I was really soaking in the environment and how good that felt.”
The Pyramid has also served as a safe haven for athletes and coaches this week, particularly those from UCLA and Long Beach State, where campuses have been disrupted by pro-Palestinian supporters .
While UCLA was wrapping up its five-set victory over UC Irvine in the first semifinal Thursday afternoon, a large group of protesters blocked the main entrance to the Pyramid, forcing spectators to find alternative exits.
The Bruins have two Israeli players, Ido David and Guy Genis, who play major roles on their team.
“This is a really difficult situation for everybody involved,” UCLA coach John Speraw said. “As this has been developing over the course of last week, we’ve been down here in Long Beach, so we’ve been a little more sequestered away from all that. … I keep checking in with (Genis and David) and they seem to be doing OK, right now.”
David and Genis combined for 12 kills and three hitting errors in the win against fourth-seeded UCI. The duo also combined for nine of UCLA’s 23 blocks in the match.
After winning the 20th NCAA title in program history last season in Fairfax, Virginia, the Bruins (25-5) are also thrilled to be competing for a championship closer to home.
“Definitely don’t miss the flight, the jet lag, or anything like that,” Speraw said. “It puts a lot more pressure on the tickets. All of sudden, your second cousin you haven’t seen in a while wants to show up.”
Of course, the Pyramid is also home to LBSU, a place where Alan Knipe has coached since 2001 and practically raised his son, Aidan, a redshirt senior setter for Long Beach.
Alan Knipe won his second national title as a coach inside the Pyramid in 2019, a year before Aidan joined the program. They played for a national title at UCLA in 2022, but were swept by Hawai’i . Last season, Long Beach was swept by the Bruins in the semifinals.
Winning a title inside the Pyramid would be the perfect way to cap their five-year run together.
“I’d be lying to say my wife and I are not excited about that, but she has to carry that emotional side,” Knipe said. “I get to at least think I have something to do in the match, and some control that keeps my mind from wandering into fatherhood.”
The expansion of the tournament has also brought more exposure to the sport, which should only increase its participants.
Fort Valley State made its first trip to the NCAA Championships in just its third year with a program, becoming the first HBCU institution to compete in the tournament.
“Recruits have now seen them here, that makes a difference,” Speraw said of Fort Valley State, which UCLA swept to open tournament play Tuesday. “All of this is really the next step for the development of their program.”
Grand Canyon has only been fielding a team since 2009 and didn’t join the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation until 2017, but the only men’s volleyball program in Arizona beat UCLA in the MPSF championship match two weeks ago and pushed Long Beach to its limits Thursday.
“We are growing,” Knipe said of the sport. “We had the first real tournament on Tuesday with everybody playing in the quarters. … Numbers are growing, boys volleyball all across the country, states are adding high school boys volleyball at a big number.”
Knipe said he wouldn’t be surprised to see the tournament field grow to 12 teams in the coming years.
“I hope it continues to grow,” Knipe said. “For those people that are logging all those hours to make it happen, keep going. We appreciate it and it’s noticed.”

Schar School Students Shine at National Political Science Conference
In this story, request schar school program information, learn more about the schar school.
In a notable showcase of academic excellence and scholarly engagement, students from the Schar School of Policy and Government made a significant impact at the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) Conference held in Chicago earlier this month. Despite its regional designation, the conference attracted some 5,000 attendees, solidifying its status as a premier national event in the field of political science.
Among the participants were two undergraduate and eight doctoral students from the Schar School, who distinguished themselves through their presentations of papers and posters. Their topics spanned a wide range of political science disciplines, reflecting the depth and diversity of research being conducted at the institution.
The presentations covered areas such as public perception of political events, the impact of Supreme Court rulings, the analysis of political disloyalty, community sponsorship in resettlement, and the intricate dynamics of global politics, among others.
The students' contributions were not only well-received but also highlighted their professional demeanor, analytical prowess, and engaging presentation skills. Their work garnered positive feedback throughout the weekend-long event, demonstrating the high caliber of mentorship and academic preparation they received at the Schar School.
In the days prior to the conference, student participants were invited to an afternoon workshop where several of their professors, experienced hands at presenting difficult material to a live audience, coached them during practice sessions. The fine-tuning paid off.
The Schar School representatives were “professional, poised, curious, and engaging,” said Associate Professor Jennifer N. Victor . “[They were] doing their best and getting good feedback on their work. I was proud to be their professor, mentor, and colleague at this important national political science conference.”
As the MPSA Conference continues to be a pivotal event for political science scholars nationwide, the participation of Schar School students not only enhances their own academic profiles but also elevates the school's reputation as a hub for innovative research and scholarly excellence.
