Postdoctoral Research Associate -Surface Science of PFAS

The National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II), a U.S. DOE Office of Science User Facility operated for the DOE Office of Science by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), is seeking exceptional candidates for a postdoctoral position. The position is in the Complex Scattering Program. The work will make extensive use of the liquid interface scattering at the Soft Matter Interfaces (SMI) beamline of NSLS-II using a variety of X-ray scattering techniques, including grazing-incidence small- and wide-angle scattering (GISAXS/GIWAXS), and X-ray reflectivity along with X-ray fluorescence methods.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will join our effort to investigate monolayers of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as “forever chemicals”. The investigation will use X-ray scattering, optical spectroscopy, tensiometry, and rheometry methods to understand the molecular structure and behavior of self-assembled PFAS monolayers at liquid interfaces in the presence of different ions and surfactants. The results of these studies will enhance the basic scientific understanding of interfacial structure-property relationships in fluorinated surfactants and enable improved methods for removal of PFAS from contaminated waters via sub-surface bubbling. The X-ray scattering measurements will take advantage of the unique synchrotron-based liquid surface spectrometer (only 2 in the US) at NSLS-II and the development of novel tender (2.05-5 keV) resonant X-ray liquid surface scattering. This work will be complemented by optical spectroscopy measurements carried out at BNL’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN). The candidate will collaborate with researchers at NSLS-II, CFN and universities.

Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

In this position, you will have the following roles and responsibilities: • Perform experimental design, data collection and analysis from in situ liquid surface X-ray scattering experiments at NSLS-II. • Collaborate to develop and commission novel tender X-ray liquid scattering and optical spectroscopy capabilities. • Perform spectroscopy (IR and Raman, etc.) measurements.  • Conduct surface tension, surface adsorption, and rheology measurements using lab-based tensiometers.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You are qualified for this Research Associate position if: • You earned a PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Material Science, Physics, or a related science or engineering discipline within the past five years or will complete this degree prior to starting the position. • You are committed to creative and independent research, teamwork, and fostering an environment of safe scientific work practices. • You have excellent oral and written communication skills. • You have a proven track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You are well-matched to this position if you have some of the following: • You have experience with PFAS detection, fate and transport, separation, or destruction. • You have work experience in the field of surfactant science. • You have experience with grazing-incidence X-ray scattering, and/or X-ray reflectivity. • You have demonstrated experience with least-squares data fitting. • You have knowledge of Python or other scientific programming languages. • You have hands-on experience with commissioning, operating, and/or maintaining complex scientific instrumentation.

  •  BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events
  • Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $70200 - $116200 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.

Brookhaven employees are subject to restrictions related to participation in Foreign Government Talent Recruitment Programs, as defined and detailed in United States Department of Energy Order 486.1A. You will be asked to disclose any such participation at the time of hire for review by Brookhaven. The full text of the Order may be found at: https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0486.1-BOrder-a/@@images/file

Some gender disparities widened in the U.S. workforce during the pandemic

research jobs s

The COVID-19 recession resulted in a  steep but transitory  contraction in employment, with greater  job losses among women than men. The recovery began in  April 2020 and is not complete. As of the third quarter of 2021, the labor force ages 25 and older remains nearly 2 million below its level in the same quarter of 2019.

The pandemic is associated with an increase in some gender disparities in the labor market. Among adults 25 and older who have no education beyond high school, more women have left the labor force than men. Other disparities have stayed the same or even narrowed: The gender pay gap has remained steady, for example, and the difference in the average hours worked by men and women has slightly diminished.

The COVID-19 recession differed from prior recent recessions in that it disproportionately eliminated jobs employing women. Media accounts often referred to it as a “ shecession .” As the economy and labor market have been recovering for more than 21 months, Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to investigate if there are lingering impacts on the labor market opportunities of women.

Labor force estimates and average hours worked are derived from the monthly Current Population Survey (CPS), sponsored jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The CPS is the nation’s premier labor force survey and is the basis for the monthly national unemployment rate released on the first Friday of each month. The CPS is based on a sample survey of about 70,000 households . The estimates are not seasonally adjusted.

For a quarter of the sample each month, the CPS also records data on usual hourly earnings for workers paid by the hour and usual weekly earnings and hours worked for other workers.

The CPS microdata files analyzed were provided by the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) at the University of Minnesota .

The COVID-19 outbreak has affected data collection efforts by the U.S. government in its surveys, especially limiting in-person data collection. This resulted in about an 8 percentage point dec rease in the response rate for the CPS in September 2021. It is possible that some measures of labor market activity and its demographic composition are affected by these changes in data collection.

Overall, the number of women ages 25 and older in the labor force has fallen 1.3% since the third quarter of 2019, similar to the 1.1% decline of men in the labor force.

A chart showing that among less-educated adults, the labor force decline has been greater for women than men from 2019 to 2021

But this modest overall change obscures divergent outcomes for labor force members with different levels of education. Women who have no education beyond high school exited the labor force in greater numbers than similarly educated men. However, the pandemic has not interrupted the long-running gains of  women among the college-educated  labor force.

From the third quarter of 2019 to the same quarter of 2021, the number of women in the labor force who are not high school graduates decreased 12.8%, dwarfing the 4.9% contraction among comparably educated men. The pandemic also disproportionately affected women with a high school diploma. The ranks of women in the high-school-educated labor force have declined 6.0% since the third quarter of 2019. The labor force of similarly educated men has fallen only 1.8%.

Among the labor force with at least some amount of education beyond high school, women have fared at least as well as men. The number of men and women in the labor force who have some college experience but not a bachelor’s degree has contracted for both groups, with no strong disparities between the two. Both men and women with at least a bachelor’s degree saw positive gains in the labor force (2.7% and 3.9%, respectively) from 2019 to 2021.

What accounts for the larger labor force  withdrawals among less-educated women  than men during the pandemic? It is complex but there seems to be a consensus that it partly  reflects how women are overrepresented  in certain health care, food preparation and personal service occupations that were sharply curtailed at the start of the pandemic. Although women overall are more likely than men to be able to work remotely, they are  disproportionately employed in occupations  that require them to work on-site and in close proximity to others.

It is less clear whether women’s parental roles and  limited child care  and schooling options have played a large role in forcing them to exit the labor market. The number of mothers and fathers in the labor force has declined in similar fashion over the past two years.

A chart showing that on average, men are working fewer hours in paid jobs since 2019, but women’s hours are unchanged

Turning to the number of hours employees work per week, on average, there have been small changes associated with the pandemic and they have occurred among men. In the third quarter of 2021, women ages 25 and older worked 37.5 hours on average in paid employment, unchanged from how much they worked two years earlier. Men ages 25 and older worked 41.6 hours on average in the third quarter of 2021. That is 0.7 fewer hours than they worked pre-pandemic (42.2). So, the disparity in hours of paid employment between women and men workers has somewhat narrowed.

The pandemic is also not associated with a widening of the  gender pay gap . Among full- and part-time workers ages 25 and older, women earned 86% of what men earned based on median hourly earnings in the third quarter of 2021. Two years ago, the estimated gender pay gap was 85%.

A chart showing that the gender pay gap has not widened during the pandemic

The overall pay gap partly reflects that employed women have higher levels of education than employed men. In 2021, 48% of women workers ages 25 and older had completed at least a bachelor’s degree compared with 40% of men. Workers with at least a bachelor’s degree tend to earn more and thus women’s earnings are boosted by their greater educational attainment. The gender pay gap is greater when you look at groups of women and men with equal levels of education. The gap depends on the education level, but in 2021 women ages 25 and older earned closer to 80 cents on the dollar compared with equally educated men.

The highest-paying in-demand jobs that don't require a degree, according to new research

thumbnail

If you're looking for a career that pays well, doesn't require a college degree and offers strong job security, you might want to consider a trade job.

The U.S. skilled labor market is facing "record-high pressure," according to new research from McKinsey & Co. , as more workers age out and fewer young people train to fill their jobs as construction workers, plumbers, welders and more.

Labor shortages — amplified by disruptions to in-person work and material shortages during the Covid-19 pandemic — have created more competition for talent, and, as a result, wages for skilled trade jobs have risen by more than 20% since the first quarter of 2020, McKinsey & Co. reports.

Demand for skilled tradespeople is expected to increase over the next decade and remain high in the U.S. due to infrastructure needs, a surge in real estate redevelopment and investments in renewable energy.

The most in-demand jobs companies are hiring for right now — that don't require a degree — are in construction, manufacturing and plumbing, according to data from Payscale and ZipRecruiter exclusively shared with CNBC Make It :

1. Construction superintendent

Median salary: $84,600

2. Manufacturing production manager

Median salary: $71,800

3. Journeyman plumber

Median salary: $61,500

It's important to note that there are different levels of certification for some trade jobs including plumbers and electricians. For plumbers, there are three levels : Apprentice, journeyman and master.

If you want to work as a journeyman plumber, you'll need to work as an apprentice under a licensed master plumber for at least 2 years, depending on your state's requirements, according to Indeed.

To compile the list, Payscale analyzed 85,715 salary profiles from U.S. workers with no education higher than a high school diploma. The salary data was collected between April 2022 and April 2024. From that sample, Payscale identified a list of jobs and ranked them by median pay for workers without degrees.

Then, to determine which high-paying jobs are seeing the most demand, ZipRecruiter looked at hiring trends for these roles over the last six months to see which jobs saw the biggest increase in openings.

All of these jobs saw at least a 16% increase in openings on ZipRecruiter between October 2023 and March 2024. Construction superintendents have seen the largest uptick in demand, with openings surging more than 128%.

Other high-paying trade jobs that have seen slightly less demand, but are still hiring at a good clip, include fleet managers, who oversee drivers and vehicles, like delivery trucks, owned or leased by their companies, and journeyman electricians. The median pay for fleet managers without degrees is $64,600 while journeyman electricians make $62,600 on average, according to Payscale.

Careers in construction, manufacturing and home services, which have historically prioritized skills over degrees in hiring, still present some of the best opportunities for people to earn up to six figures without going to college, says Ruth Thomas, a pay equity strategist with Payscale.

Although more companies are dropping degree requirements for jobs, skills-based hiring is still a newer trend that "hasn't become common practice" across all industries just yet, Thomas adds.

Zambia visit shows SSW’s global impact

A UNC School of Social Work delegation saw how their research helped a nonprofit create jobs in rural areas.

A small delegation from the UNC School of Social Work visited the growing rural town of Solwezi (population 90,000) in the North-Western Province of Zambia in March. They came to learn about the impact of local women’s savings and credit groups and their financial literacy training.

The trip was coordinated by Gina Chowa and Rain Masa from the school’s center for  Global Social Development Innovations in partnership with longtime collaborator Mathias Zimba, executive director of  Rising Fountains Development Program in Zambia.

“As partners, we work together to identify ideas and practices that will change lives for the better,” Masa said. “Researchers and graduate students at the school can help build the evidence needed to demonstrate to policymakers, officials and the business community what is needed to  improve the lives of rural Zambians .”

Improving lives in six countries

Masa is an associate professor who also serves as GSDI’s research director. He has worked collaboratively on both economic security and HIV treatment projects with Rising Fountains, a Zambian nonprofit dedicated to improving the livelihoods of women and children in rural areas.

Masa emphasized how community involvement localizes these economic programs and increases their chance of success and relevance.

“Economic security is the focal point of our work,” said Masa. “We provide funding and, maybe more importantly, we are available to Mathias and his team for ongoing capacity support as well.”

Paving career paths

During the visit to her native Zambia, Chowa was visibly moved at the end of a day spent at a teen center and a church. The delegation heard from over a dozen enthusiastic groups of about 20 women each and the men who had joined in support of them.

“These people. This is why I do the work I do,” Chowa said.

Following the presentations, the delegation went to see the small business owners in action. These included a man who bought spare parts for just one bicycle and now runs a repair shop with several assistants, craftswomen who purchased a sewing machine and yarn to create and sell clothing, and a woman who uses a mobile phone and SIM cards to help townspeople make financial transactions.

“This is not about politics,” said one Solwezi community leader. “I stand in the middle in support of our people helping better their lives and those of their families.”

At the end of the visit, local residents piled baskets full of sweet melons, gourds and pineapples at the front of a small church as parting gifts.

“The bounty and generosity of spirit of the nearly 150 people of Solwezi whom we visited with earlier this month made a lasting impression,” said Alice Washington, a longtime member of the school’s advisory board.

An Opportunity to Lead: The Value of an MBA

Monday, Apr 22, 2024 • Jeremiah Valentine : [email protected]

Introduction and Benefits of an MBA

Attaining a Master of Business Administration Degree from The University of Texas at Arlington is a way to level up your professional career. With an MBA students develop an understanding of multiple pieces of an organization. Students typically pursue an MBA because they want to advance to the next level in their career. An MBA allows students to move from a skill-based position to a leadership role. “In business you never have all the answers, but you have tools to pursue something that you may think works as a solution,” said James Brown, a Graduate Recruiter at the College of Business. According to the Harvard Business Review, graduates often land positions that place them on an accelerated path of leadership; an MBA degree can set you apart during the hiring process from fellow applicants. Becoming a leader requires a different skillset including advanced communication, strategic thinking and planning abilities, or maximizing personnel potential. An MBA degree develops these diverse skills to find solutions in any situation or industry. “You start to understand the bigger picture of how organizations work.” said James. The MBA program at UTA allows students to learn and utilize these tools in a social setting. You will gain valuable insight and knowledge from your professors and classmates who have experience in different industries, creating a unique classroom dynamic. U.S. News & World Report stated, “There is no other degree that provides the launching pad to many different possibilities to chart your next career destiny.” Recently, the College of Business’s Part-Time MBA was nationally ranked # 60 out of 269 in 2024 on the list of top graduate schools by U.S. News & World Report.

Insider Perspective

I spoke to Scott Elbert, Director of Undergraduate Advising, about UTA’s MBA degree. He highlighted the different ways students could earn the degree and how it is still extremely valuable in today’s workforce.  Scott spoke about the relevancy of the degree and skills you can expect to learn, “I think an MBA is still extremely relevant. Generally speaking, people look at the MBA as your general business degree, a jack of all trades. The MBA gives students a blend of soft skills including sales and negotiations; gaining the ability to analyze data and finance spreadsheets for accounting. You get a great mix of all those different skills that will prepare you to go into a number of different roles.” UTA’s MBA degree offers students 13 different concentrations allowing for specialization. Students can also earn a graduate certificate after the completion of certain courses; maximizing their marketability while completing their MBA.
