Both degrees are different, though a doctorate one! And henceforth, goals, responsibilities, salary and career options are different as well. First read this article to learn more about both: DNP vs PhD in nursing .
Besides, we also have discussed the doctor of nursing practice degree, its requirements, eligibility, process, opportunities and other related things in our previous article. You can also read it here: What is a doctor of nursing practice degree?

What is a PhD in nursing?
Doctor of Philosophy in nursing- PhD in nursing, is the highest level of research degree given to the nursing degree holder for providing knowledge in the field of nursing.
The present degree is more similar to the other PhD’s but different than the DNP, though both are nursing degrees. Here in the PhD, by doing extensive research, a fellow improves the present knowledge to solve the real-world problems or problems related to nursing practice.
Their major responsibilities are,
- To do research in the same field
- To improve the present knowledge
- To lead the nursing research team as well as to guide the nurse practitioners
- To find out gaps, problems and loopholes in the existing system
- To publish articles
- To fundraise or avail grants for the organization.
PhD in nursing- Requirements and Eligibility criteria:
The PhD in nursing requirements are almost similar to DNP requiring a master’s degree in nursing or nursing science. Here is the list of requirements:
- Master’s degree in nursing or master of nursing science.

- Nurse valid and approved license

Admission process:
Much like other PhD programs, the admission process of PhD in nursing is somewhat similar.

Unlike the DNP- doctor of nursing practice, here the course work is required therefore during the first year, the candidate has to complete it.
After completing the coursework, the prospective candidate can begin their research work, they got stamped for PhD in nursing.
From the second year to the next 2 to 4 year candidates do research to find new knowledge.
PhD in nursing- salary and income:
As we said, nursing is one of the most demanding and high paying field. A candidate can earn $85,000 to $1,00,000/ year or even more in the USA.

PhD in nursing- jobs and opportunities:
The available job options and future opportunities for PhD degree holders are quite dissimilar to DNP, as they are more involved in research rather than clinical practice. The job opportunities of PhD in nursing are;

Ph.D. in Nursing Salary – 2024
The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing degree (Ph.D. in nursing) is a terminal degree chiefly pursued by nurses who are interested either in teaching or in participating in evidence-based research that advances the practice of nursing. The average Ph.D. in nursing salary is $99,000 a year. Until relatively recently, the Ph.D. in nursing was the only option for nurses interested in doctoral-level studies. In 2006, however, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) issued established parameters for an additional terminal nursing degree called the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). A useful way of distinguishing between the nursing profession’s two terminal degrees is that Ph.Ds. discover the evidence while DNPs translate that evidence into clinical practice. Fewer than 1 percent of the nation’s 3.8 million registered nurses hold a doctoral degree, and DNPs far outnumber PhDs. in nursing. How much do Ph.D. in nursing graduates make? The nurses are paid a reasonably high salary in most countries all over the world. This is because of the lack of adequate number of qualified nurses. The demand for nurses in developed countries is very high because of the high level of healthcare provided there. This causes many nurses completing their education from developing countries like India and Philippines to leave the country. They prefer to work in other developed countries like Ireland, USA and England. This creates a deficit in the number of nurses who are available to work in India and Philippines.
The salary of a nurse in India may not be as high as that of a similar professional in developed countries. But as the experience of the nurse increases, there are more opportunities for the nurse. The pay of the nurse also improves with better qualification and with specialization. The place of work also matters. A hospital in a city usually pays more than a rural hospital. The government also tries to ensure that the salary structure of the nurses is quite high. Those in the government set up have better scales and on par with nurses working in other countries.
Salary And Career Opportunities For Nurses In India
It is well known in the medical profession that about 60% of advertised vacancies in the health care sector is for the nursing profession. This means that there is a huge potential for job opportunities for nurses. When the employment possibilities in many other professions are falling, the nursing profession is on a roll. There is a lot of shortage of nurses at all times. The main reason for this is that as India becomes a developed country, the health care sector keeps expanding. This means that more nurses will be needed to take care of patients in a much better manner.
What salary can a nurse expect in India?
Due to a wide disparity in the level of education and standard of living in India, the salary of nurses also varies widely between hospitals. Here, we strive to provide a range between which a nurse can expect salary while working in India.
Staff nurse salary (after completing DGNM qualification with 0 to 5 years of experience)
- Minimum salary : Rs 13,000
- Maximum salary: Rs.25,000 to 30,000
Senior Staff nurse salary (after completing DGNM qualification + 10-20 years experience)
- Minimum salary : Rs 25,000
- Maximum salary: Rs 80,000 up to 1,00,000 for those with more experience
Tutor / Clinical nursing instructor salary (after completing BSc(N) qualification with 0 to 5 years of experience)
- Minimum salary : 25,000
- Maximum salary: 45, 000 up to 70,000 for those with more experience

- Minimum salary : 45,000
- Maximum salary: 80,000 up to 1,50,000 for those with more experience
Senior professor of nursing salary (after completing PhD qualification with adequate experience)
- Minimum salary : 50,000
- Maximum salary: 1,00,000 up to 2,00,000 for those with more experience
Salary for internship positions
Unlike in many other professions, nursing interns may not be able to obtain jobs in many private institutions, unless they have completed their professional education in the same institute. The salary for internship positions may vary from a minimum of Rs.5,000 to a maximum of about Rs.10,000.
There are very few institutions offering internships. Most of the institutions offer jobs because that would retain the staff nurses in their institutions.
If any candidate is keen to do internship, it is possible to write to the heads of department and esquire about the possibility of an internship being done. They may respond positively if they are in need of additional staff, but some institution may even ask the candidate to remit a particular amount as fee to do internship.
Shortage of nurses in India
According to the estimates by the World Health Organization, there is still a shortage of about 2.8 million qualified nurses in India. The number of nurses who are being educated in the many educational institutions in India is far less than the requirement that is present.
The Trained Nurses’ Association of India (TNAI) is an association that works mainly towards the goal of better pay package and welfare of nurses. This association usually takes up the matter of better pay for nurses. They are, in fact, lobbying for better pay packages for nurses that are on par with the other professions.
Career Opportunities in nursing colleges
The mushrooming of more nursing colleges in India has led to a huge increase in the career opportunities available for nurses. These colleges will need faculty and so the graduates who have some teaching experience are recruited in the colleges as faculty. There is ample chance for growth in these educational institutions as teachers. The nurse will be able to start the career as a tutor and then become lecturer, reader, associate professor and professor. The salary of nurses working in teaching institutions are usually higher in India.
Career opportunities as nurse practitioners
There are many career opportunities for nurses as nurse practitioners. The shortage of doctors in rural India and smaller cities has led to the recruitment of nurse practitioners in various hospitals. The nurse practitioner would be required to function as a practitioner in a hospital setting. The nurse will be able to specialize in various specialties and then function as a member of a highly specialized team. The role of a nurse practitioner is more clinical than a general nurse. This is because of the specialization of the nurse in a specific area of nursing.
Salary for specialist nurses
In India, the specialist nurses do not have a special salary. The salary of nurses is based on the qualification and experience. It is not based on the specialty in which the nurse is working. In some countries abroad, specialist nurses may get a better pay.
For example, a operating room nurse or a theater nurse would get a better pay than a nurse with the same qualification and experience, who works in a ward. Similarly, a community nurse or a cardiac nurse would also be able to obtain a higher pay abroad. On the other hand, the nurse in India would be able to obtain only uniform pay in any specialty and the only criteria for determining the salary would be experience and qualification.
When will nurses in India get salary on par with nurses around the world?
Nurses will be able to get salary on par with nurses from around the world in future. This can happen when uniform health insurance or a uniform social security scheme for all citizens of the country is enforced. This is not too far ahead because the government only has to enact one law to make sure that the health industry is completely revamped to incorporate universal health insurance. Already the system is in place for health insurance schemes to cover people. There are Chief Ministers health insurance schemes in every state that will help people to obtain health care. When healthcare becomes available though insurance companies, these companies will pay the employees of hospitals. This will in turn improve the salary of nurses.
Also, several nurse organizations and associations are holding management of hospitals at ransom by indulging in strikes and other activities. This is to force the managements to increase the salary of nurses in India.
Compare salary of nurses from around the world
The salary is given as a range with the minimum and maximum listed. It does not take into account the experience, qualification or designation of a nurse. The minimum salary is mentioned here so that it acts as a uniform base to compare easily. All the salaries are given in US$ to make it easy to compare nurse salary.

Scope & Salary of Nurses in India [2024]
Last year, when the world struggled to grapple with coronavirus’s devastating impact, doctors and nurses emerged as our true saviours. Throughout the year (and counting still), nurses and medical experts continued to deliver round-the-clock care to patients.
Their exhausted and bruised faces, tired eyes, and tired bodies from wearing masks and protective gear all through their shifts were trending on social media, showing us how challenging the medical profession can be – while doctors cure patients, nurses care for them.
However, that’s just an ongoing issue that merely highlighted the position nurses hold in society. Nurses have played a crucial role in delivering care and treatment to people in need since time immemorial. They’re a pivotal part of the local community as they help shape and provide result-oriented healthcare advice and treatment to the community members.
The nurses are always in high demand. Presently, nursing constitutes the largest occupational group in the healthcare industry , with nearly 59% of medical professionals working as nurses. As of 2020, India has around 3.07 million registered nursing professionals .
According to the latest stats, by 2025, the global healthcare staff market will grow from USD 28,545.73 million (in 2020) to USD 38,879.13 million at a CAGR of 6.37%. The graph below highlights the estimated employment growth for different nursing profiles from 2018-2028:

These stats depict that nursing is a booming field in the healthcare industry, and with time, the demand for nurses will increase manifold.
Nursing responsibilities: What do nurses do?
Nurses bear the responsibility of delivering quality healthcare services to all people alike, irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, religious background, and socio-political inclinations. They aim to provide holistic care to all patients, catering to their physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, and social needs.
Nurses work alongside doctors, physicians, therapists, dieticians, etc., to develop care and treatment plans for patients. Their primary focus is to treat illnesses effectively to improve the quality of life of all individuals.
The nursing code and standard varies from country to country. However, all nurses worldwide follow four core principles and ethics of nursing practice:
- To always prioritize the well-being and care delivery of patients.
- To provide quality care and treatment at all times.
- To cooperate and coordinate with other medical experts for ensuring the speedy recovery and well-being of all patients.
- To always act with integrity and uphold the dignity of the nursing profession.
Typically, nurses differ from doctors and other specialist healthcare experts in their training, approach to patient care, and scope of practice.
While most nurses offer generic care services, many others specialize in specific areas like palliative care, perioperative nursing, cardiac nursing, orthopaedic nursing, obstetrical nursing, oncology nursing, nursing informatics, and telenursing, to name a few. Also, nurses practice with varying degrees of prescription authority and autonomy in care delivery.
Where do nurses work?
Nurses practice and work in a wide range of healthcare settings, including schools and universities, hospitals, private nursing homes, nursing homes, rehabilitation centres, physicians’ offices, diagnostic clinics, relief/medical camps, railway hospitals, and national defence bases (military/army/airforce/navy).
They often work in shifts (day/night shifts). Nurses may also act as expert advisors to health insurance companies and offer attorneys advocacy (reviewing patient records, testifying in court, etc.). Some nurses may also find employment opportunities in research institutions & laboratories and pharmaceutical companies.
