Ph.D in Nursing

Ph.D. nursing is a research-based degree that takes between 4-6 years to complete. This course entails conducting nursing research to improve healthcare facilities. Candidates for a Ph.D. The nursing programme must have a Master's degree in Nursing or another equivalent discipline from a recognized university with minimum aggregate of 55%. Students who complete this research-based programme will be qualified to work as a Chief Nursing Officer, Rehabilitation Specialist, Critical Care Nurse, Nurse Manager, Community Health Specialist, and other related positions.

What is a PhD in nursing?  

Doctor of Philosophy in nursing- PhD in nursing, is the highest level of research degree given to the nursing degree holder for providing knowledge in the field of nursing. 

The present degree is more similar to the other PhD’s but different than the DNP, though both are nursing degrees. Here in the PhD, by doing extensive research, a fellow improves the present knowledge to solve the real-world problems or problems related to nursing practice.

• To lead the nursing research team as well as to guide the nurse practitioners

PhD in nursing- Requirements and Eligibility criteria:  

The PhD in nursing requirements are almost similar to DNP requiring a master’s degree in nursing or nursing science. Here is the list of requirements: 

• Master’s degree in nursing or master of nursing science. 
• 55% or above marks or 3.0 GPA (overall) in all semesters. 
• Nurse valid and approved license 
• Nursing experience if applicable 
• Recommendation letter  from academics and professional career 
• University transcript if applicable 
• Certificate of GRE, TOEFL or IELTS in case of foreign students 
• List of publications if any 

Admission process: 

Much like other PhD programs, the admission process of PhD in nursing is somewhat similar. 

The applicant starts applying by choosing the appropriate course they wish to pursue, for example, online or offline, PhD or DNP. After that, check the availability of the course at the university you wish to study. 

Apply online through the official website of the university and pay application fees. 

Afterward, the applicant needs to appear in the personal interview along with all the documents to the university, if shortlisted. 

The interview process held by the university to evaluate the interest, potential and preparation of the candidate. 

Don’t forget to present your research proposal to the interview committee. 

During the interview, the applicant also has to select their PhD guide. Note that they can decide before appearing in the interview. 

After completing the personal interview, candidates pay fees online or offline and submit all the documents to the university. 

Unlike the DNP- doctor of nursing practice, here the course work is required therefore during the first year, the candidate has to complete it. 

After completing the coursework, the prospective candidate can begin their research work, they got stamped for PhD in nursing. 

From the second year to the next 2 to 4 year candidates do research to find new knowledge.

GNM – Nursing in India The GNM full form is General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM or GNM Nursing) and it is a 3.5-year-long diploma program with 3 years of regular study and 6 months of mandatory internship. • Students must have completed their 10+2 from the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as mandatory subjects.

• They must also have obtained the minimum number of marks required in their GNM Nursing Entrance Exam Result.

What is GNM Nursing Course?

GNM or General Nursing and Midwifery is a 3.5 years duration course that is commonly also known as GNM Nursing. It is a diploma-level course, suitable for those who want to pursue a career in clinical nursing.

The 3.5 years of GNM Nursing course duration are divided into 3 years of education and 6 months of mandatory internship. Students get to do internships in Nursing Homes, Hospitals, and even Private Medical Firms and Companies. This is suitable for those who are interested in assisting sick people and helping doctors in various hospitals.

GNM Admissions are done through entrance exams, almost all of which are state-level. Most of the states in India have departments that conduct entrance exams for GNM Nursing course. The details of these exams are given later in the article..

Post Basic GNM

Candidates in the post-basic GNM or post-basic BSc Nursing explore advanced knowledge. This knowledge is rendered via classroom along with educational visits and clinical teachings. There is a good scope of post-basic GNM. Candidates can get jobs at nursing educational institutions, clinics, public health centers, etc. The duration of the basic version of this course lasts 3 years, whereas the regular version of this course lasts for 2 years.

Distance GNM

Since GNM or General Nursing and Midwifery is a highly technical profession there is very limited scope for distance learning. Students must be wary of colleges providing GNM in distance mode.

Scope & Salary of Nurses in India [2024]

Last year, when the world struggled to grapple with coronavirus’s devastating impact, doctors and nurses emerged as our true saviours. Throughout the year (and counting still), nurses and medical experts continued to deliver round-the-clock care to patients.

Their exhausted and bruised faces, tired eyes, and tired bodies from wearing masks and protective gear all through their shifts were trending on social media, showing us how challenging the medical profession can be – while doctors cure patients, nurses care for them.

However, that’s just an ongoing issue that merely highlighted the position nurses hold in society. Nurses have played a crucial role in delivering care and treatment to people in need since time immemorial. They’re a pivotal part of the local community as they help shape and provide result-oriented healthcare advice and treatment to the community members.

The nurses are always in high demand. Presently, nursing constitutes the  largest occupational group in the healthcare industry , with nearly 59% of medical professionals working as nurses. As of 2020, India has around  3.07 million registered nursing professionals .

Nursing responsibilities: What do nurses do?

Nurses bear the responsibility of delivering quality healthcare services to all people alike, irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, religious background, and socio-political inclinations. They aim to provide holistic care to all patients, catering to their physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, and social needs.

Nurses work alongside doctors, physicians, therapists, dieticians, etc., to develop care and treatment plans for patients. Their primary focus is to treat illnesses effectively to improve the quality of life of all individuals.  

The nursing code and standard varies from country to country. However, all nurses worldwide follow four core principles and ethics of nursing practice:

• To always prioritize the well-being and care delivery of patients.
• To provide quality care and treatment at all times. 
• To cooperate and coordinate with other medical experts for ensuring the speedy recovery and well-being of all patients.
• To always act with integrity and uphold the dignity of the nursing profession. 

Typically, nurses differ from doctors and other specialist healthcare experts in their training, approach to patient care, and scope of practice.

While most nurses offer generic care services, many others specialize in specific areas like palliative care, perioperative nursing, cardiac nursing, orthopaedic nursing, obstetrical nursing, oncology nursing, nursing informatics, and telenursing, to name a few. Also, nurses practice with varying degrees of prescription authority and autonomy in care delivery. 

Where do nurses work?

Nurses practice and work in a wide range of healthcare settings, including schools and universities, hospitals, private nursing homes, nursing homes, rehabilitation centres, physicians’ offices, diagnostic clinics, relief/medical camps, railway hospitals, and national defence bases (military/army/airforce/navy).

They often work in shifts (day/night shifts). Nurses may also act as expert advisors to health insurance companies and offer attorneys advocacy (reviewing patient records, testifying in court, etc.). Some nurses may also find employment opportunities in research institutions & laboratories and pharmaceutical companies. 

Nursing Salary in India

According to  Payscale , a Registered Nurse (RN) in India earns an average annual salary of ₹298,781 LPA. 

A Registered Nurse (RN) having less than 1-year experience usually begins their career with a starting salary of ₹233,151 LPA, including bonuses and overtime pay. After gaining around four years of experience, Registered Nurses can earn a total compensation of ₹249,994 LPA. In their mid-career (5-9 years of experience), nurses make around ₹393,132 LPA. Experienced nurses having more than 15 years of industry experience earn ₹496,269 LPA.

Thus, like any other profession, nursing salary packages also increase with increasing experience. The more industry experience you gain, the more skilled Nurse you become. However, there’s a significant difference between nurses’ grade pay in government and private hospitals – usually, government hospitals pay a higher salary package than private hospitals/nursing homes.
