In celebration of the Tercentenary year of the birth of Nano, on 8 June 2018, in an extra-ordinary act of generosity, the Ursuline Sisters in Ireland gifted seven Letters of Nano Nagle – that have been in their possession and carefully held in the Archives of the Ursuline Convent, Blackrock, Co Cork – to the Presentation Sisters. Nano Nagle had a significant role in establishing the first community of Ursuline Sisters in Ireland in 1771. These letters are safely held in the Presentation Sisters Congregational Archives (PSCA).

To coincide with the Tercentenary year of the birth of Nano Nagle (2018), the Presentation Sisters sponsored a PhD research project with University College Dublin School of Education and UCD Digital Library, which included the digitisation of the entire collection of the Letters of Nano Nagle. This resulted in the first Irish digital reunification of globally-dispersed congregational archives. The digital collection comprises of seventeen manuscript letters; the letters are from Nano Nagle to Eleanor Fitzsimons (later Sr Angela Fitzsimons), an Irish religious novice in Paris, and from Nano Nagle to Teresa Mulally, educator of the poor, in Dublin.

“I am confident that the Great God will direct you to what is most His Glory.”

– Venerable Mother Nano Nagle

Nano Nagle founded the Sisters of the Presentation on Christmas Eve, 1775. She was born in 1718 at Ballygriffen, Ireland. When Nano was a little girl, there were no schools in Ireland for catholic children because of the Penal Laws. Nano was taught in her own home or attended the Hedge-school, schools taught by teachers disguised as beggars and laborers.

One winter morning as Nano was returning from a ball in France, she looked out of the carriage window and saw a group of poor people huddled together at the Church door waiting for it to be opened for early Mass. Her heart was touched by God’s grace. She soon realized how empty her own life was.

In 1747, at the age of 29, Nano returned to Ireland to begin her work of educating and caring for the most neglected and needy children. Hidden in small rooms, Nano taught her children to pray, read, write, and sew.

Lantern in hand at night, Nano would seek out the destitute poor and sick, providing them with love and sustenance. To her beloved poor, she was the “Lady of the Lantern.”

As years passed and Nano’s health began to fall, she feared that if anything happened to her, her schools would no longer be. She invited the Ursuline Sisters to Cork in 1771 to care for her schools. However the Ursulines could not visit the homes of the poor, as they were enclosed. Therefore, Nano decided to found a congregation of her own to teach and look after her beloved poor. And so the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary began on Christmas Eve, 1775.

Nano Nagle gave her soul to God on April 26, 1784. As she lay dying, she had two parting messages for her sisters:

“Love One Another” and “Spend yourself for the poor”

St. Colman’s Convent and Home

On June 6, 1881, a mission band of five Sisters of the Presentation founded St. Colman’s Home in Watervliet, New York. From its foundation, St. Colman’s Home has existed from the religious, physical, intellectual, moral, and social development of the child. It has been the haven of security for more than 8,000 little ones. Today, St. Colman’s stands as the focal point of a complete cycle of social services for the child in need, whether it be residential, day treatment, group or individual therapy, dealing with autism, psychological or psychiatric counseling, or learning disabilities.

Notre Dame Club of Staten Island presents $7.9K to Catholic Missionary Sisters | It’s good news!

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. —

Joseph Delaney of the Notre Dame Club of Staten Island presented a check for $7,900 to The Missionary Sisters of St. Francis, a religious order of Catholic nuns in Peekskill, N.Y.

The check was a donation through a partnership between the Notre Dame Alumni Club of Staten Island and an organization called Support Our Aging Religious (SOAR!).

Delaney explains that for years The University of Notre Dame Alumni Club on Staten Island has supported elderly and infirm nuns, brothers, and priests, living in retirement and struggling to make ends meet.

As an executive director of the club, Delaney made the donation along with club President Tom Ventrudo, who presented the congregation with the grant to purchase two motorized wheelchairs for sisters.

The University of Notre Dame Alumni Club of Staten Island has long been an active supporter and longstanding partner of SOAR! and together they were able to combine their financial resources to make the grant possible.

According to Delaney, “This contribution would not have been possible without a generous donation to our club by an anonymous Notre Dame alum, who had several elderly religious in his family. The alum asked his donation be given to the Notre Dame Club because of our club’s partnership with SOAR! and he knew the club would seek direction from SOAR! to give the donation to a religious congregation in need. SOAR! then identified the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart.”

Delaney noted that the donation represented the Notre Dame Club’s “5 Point Agenda for Life” program established five years ago to support Cardinal Timothy J. Dolan’s program of promoting life throughout the Archdiocese of New York.

The 5-Point Agenda for Life Program is a holistic approach by the club to support Life on Staten Island and across the Archdiocese of New York.

Programs supported by the 5-Point Agenda for Life include promoting and safeguarding the unborn through support of the Cross Road Foundation and Good Counsel Home, fighting food insecurity through the club’s annual Bread of Life Food Drive, and assisting children with cancer through supporting the Jewish Community Center’s Lucille and Jay Chazanoff Sunrise Day Camp.

Also, outreaching to Catholic Charities of Staten Island to assist the agency in addressing food insecurity and homelessness and assisting the migrant community, assisting people with disabilities and supporting the elderly on Staten Island and within Catholic religious communities.

In 2019, SOAR! awarded the Notre Dame Clubs of the Archdiocese of New York (Mid-Hudson Valley, New York City, and Staten Island) the organization’s prestigious Dorothy Day Award for “a broad spectrum of social, religious, and community activities that engage their members in the needs of the community.”

Each year the Staten Island club participates in the SOAR! Annual New York Awards Dinner to help raise funds for elderly and infirm religious. Previously, SOAR! has made donations to The Presentation Sisters, located on Staten Island.

And during the month of April, the Staten Island club was awarded by The University of Notre Dame its prestigious Outstanding Club Award for 2023, presented to the club at the university’s 57th Annual Leadership Conference on the campus of Notre Dame University.
