Online Sociology Graduate Programs That Don’t Require the GRE

Online Sociology Graduate Programs

Sociology is the scientific study of human interactions and social behavior. The study of sociology can be applied to small groups, large communities, and formal organizations and institutions.

Learning about sociology can help you analyze and make sense of changing social movements in the world. It can also help you broaden your perspective and understand how characteristics such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status affect people’s relationships and opportunities.

In addition to teaching you how to apply scientific thought to social dynamics, earning your degree in sociology can help you develop soft skills, such as understanding other perspectives. These skills can be beneficial in the workplace, meaning sociology is a good major for many students.

Here are some common subjects that you may study while earning your MA in sociology online:

  • Business and organizational social dynamics
  • Social movements
  • Class structure and social stratification
  • Family dynamics
  • Race and gender
  • Urban studies
  • Social psychology

After completing your graduate degree in sociology, you could pursue a career as a sociologist, a survey researcher, a market research analyst, or a social and community service manager.

Most sociologists possess at least a master’s degree. Sociologists often specialize in researching specific topics, such as education, health, crime, poverty, families, or race relations. They may work alongside other social scientists, such as economists and psychologists.

An increasing number of online graduate degree programs in sociology are accepting students with no GRE required. In other cases, you may be able to waive a GRE score requirement under certain circumstances, such as meeting a minimum undergraduate GPA requirement.

How Do I Get My GRE Waived for Admissions?

sociology gre admissions

Many universities that still require Graduate Record Examination scores for admissions are offering ways for prospective students to waive the requirement. This can usually be done by meeting other standards in lieu of the GRE.

Here are some common requirements schools might have for applicants who wish to waive the GRE:

  • A minimum undergraduate grade point average, usually between 2.8 and 3.0
  • Prior professional experience
  • Possession of another graduate degree

Grad schools that don’t require GRE scores, or those that allow applicants to waive GRE score requirements under certain circumstances, do not necessarily have low admissions standards. They may hold potential students to high standards based on other admissions criteria.

In some cases, a university may not generally require GRE scores, but specific departments or programs within the university may still have GRE requirements. You may want to carefully examine a university’s admissions requirements before applying.

What Is the GRE?

Sociology Graduate Programs gre

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test that is a common admissions requirement to attend many graduate degree programs, including some sociology programs.

The test is designed to measure the verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills that you have acquired throughout your education. The questions are intended to reflect the types of critical thinking that would be useful to you while earning a graduate degree. The test typically takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete.

What Is a Bad GRE Score?

university admissions requirements bad gre

Different universities have different admissions requirements, so a score that might be considered a bad score at one university might not be considered bad at another.

Average GRE scores include a score of 150 on verbal reasoning, a score of 152 to 153 on quantitative reasoning, and a score of 3.5 on analytical writing. Achieving these scores would put you at the 50th percentile as compared to other test takers.

What you personally choose to consider a good score will likely depend on where you wish to attend school and on that university’s particular admissions requirements.

Is GRE Required for Masters?

GRE Required for Masters

In some cases, you may be able to gain acceptance on probationary status without GRE scores. If you would prefer not to take the GRE, there are many possible options for earning your master’s degree from graduate programs with no GRE required.

What Can I Do with a Masters in Sociology?

Statement on Graduate Admissions and Diversity

The Northwestern Sociology Department Faculty considers the 2023 U.S. Supreme Court decision ending affirmative action in higher education admissions to be antithetical to our values as expressed in our Statements of Solidarity .  We remain steadfastly committed to recruiting and admitting a diverse graduate student body and will work to ensure that outcome while following university policies and the law.  We remain equally committed to promoting the sociological study of race and ethnicity, racism, and racialization as core aspects of our society (reflected in our requiring all graduate students to take a course on the Sociology of Race and Racism).

Northwestern asks applicants about their race and ethnicity for reporting purposes, but those fields are masked when applications are passed to admissions committees.  We encourage all applicants to use their Personal Statements to identify and comment on all aspects of their background and experiences that position them to contribute to a diverse intellectual community.  We also encourage applicants to find space in either the Personal Statement or the Academic Statement to reflect on how their background and experiences have positioned them to think sociologically about the world.  The admissions committee will review these statements closely, along with other application materials, as part of our holistic review and selection process.

What is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)?

The Graduate Record Examination, or GRE, is primarily used in the US and Canada to judge applicants’ suitability for a graduate degree program. The test gauges a person’s capacity for abstract thought in analytical writing, mathematics, and language.

The GRE is divided into three main sections that test verbal and quantitative reasoning and analytical writing abilities.

The Analytical Writing Section of the GRE

The analytical writing section consists of two timed writing tasks, the first is to “analyze an issue” where the writer is asked to present an opinion on an issue and give instructions on how to respond. The second is to “analyze an argument” which requires the writer to evaluate an argument according to specific instructions.

The Verbal Reasoning Section of the GRE

The verbal reasoning component tests an applicant’s ability to create inferences, identify essential and pertinent details, and comprehend words and sentences, among other things. Its design aims to gauge the test-proficiency taker’s in reading, analyzing, and evaluating textual information.

This section also tests the ability to understand and analyze connections between various sentence components and how well they can process the information they learn from written material.

The Quantitative Reasoning Section of the GRE

The quantitative reasoning section uses geometry, data analysis, and algebra principles to assess the test taker’s skills in problem-solving.

Do all schools require the GRE for admission into an online PhD degree program?

While many schools still require the GRE as part of their admissions requirements into an online PhD degree program, many do not.

Some schools may also offer a GRE exemption waiver if the prospective applicant meets other requirements.

These requirements typically include:

  • High GPA scores during undergraduate and graduate studies (usually above 3.5)
  • Years of professional work experience in the field of study or military experience

Bottom Line: Not all schools require the GRE. Some schools will also offer a GRE exemption waiver for students who qualify.

What should a prospective online PhD applicant know about the GRE?

Historically, GRE scores may have been overvalued by colleges and universities. These higher education institutions believed that a high score on the GRE was the best way to determine an applicant’s ability to perform well in a PhD program.

However, an increasing number of universities no longer require the GRE as a criterion for application. According to a recent study , a high GRE score has shown a minimal association with the performance in graduate school. And further, that the test itself has resulted in poor scores for marginalized groups.

Here are some reasons that the GRE requirement is slowly fading away:

High GRE scores don’t automatically mean better class performance

Scores themselves won’t determine a student’s classroom performance. Students can ace entrance exams and still perform poorly. A student’s classroom performance is influenced by various factors, including creativity, interpersonal abilities, and internal drive.

The GRE, however, doesn’t evaluate any of those. It only concentrates on an applicant’s test-taking abilities. Passing the test does not ensure success in the classroom or career.

GRE results decrease over time

Some believe that a school may be able to predict a student’s grades for the first year of the program based on the results of this test. Students’ grades, however, do not indicate whether they will succeed academically after that first year.

The GRE is unreliable in predicting results

A GRE test score will not predict a student’s ability to complete a program. Some high-achieving students might not have the perseverance to finish their education. On the other side, some students with poor scores might have been the ones who persisted the most.

The GRE could be “biased”

It has been noted that the GRE is the best predictor of wealth and ethnicity. The GRE is perceived as a barrier because of the test’s inherent cultural biases, therefore, employing it in the decision-making process frequently hinders attempts for diversity and inclusion.

Key Point: A high test score on the GRE is not only not a predictor of performance in an online PhD degree program, but it may even exclude students who would have had great success in their degree program.

Should you apply for an online PhD degree program that doesn’t require GRE test scores?

Before deciding to enroll in an online PhD program that doesn’t require the GRE, take the following into account:

It is possible to enroll in a PhD program that doesn’t require a GRE. However, not passing the GRE will automatically exclude you from many elite institutions.

Note that while some programs may not require you to submit your GRE score, if you take the test and do well, submitting your score may boost your chances of being accepted into an online PhD degree program.

Think about why you have decided to apply for a program that does not require you to submit your GRE score:

  • Because you’ve already chosen a course of study that exempts you from this test? Great!
  • Mostly as a result of your busy schedule? Consider carefully whether you have the time to enroll in a PhD program.
  • Because you got a low score? An ETS poll found that roughly 25% of test takers perform better on subsequent attempts.

  • How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in Duke's Ph.D. program in Sociology. Admission requirements for 2022-23 may be found at the Graduate School Admissions page . The Admissions Team at the Graduate School is helpful for information on transcripts, application fees and questions concerning how to navigate the application process. The deadline for applications for 2022-23 admission is December 20th.

We do not offer spring admissions.

Our program is primarily a doctoral program. To that end, all students to whom we offer admission as Ph.D. students are considered for financial assistance. Departmental funding includes tuition, fees, and a stipend.

In order to meet the application deadline, GRE tests should not be taken later than the preceding November test date. GRE scores older than five years at the time of application will not be accepted as official. Only the GRE general test is required, not the subject test. The Ph.D. program does not accept, nor will it review, the GRE subject test or the GMAT in lieu of the GRE general test for admissions purposes .

Please request an official score report to be sent directly to the Graduate School, institution code 5156. No department code is necessary.

Transcripts and Test Scores

Applicants should upload unofficial copies of transcripts. Official, paper copies of transcripts will be requested if the applicant is offered admission. Applicants should provide official copies of GRE and TOEFL scores. If transcripts are in a language other than English, they must be accompanied by an official, certified translation, which most universities and/or embassies provide. For statistics on GRE, TOEFL and GPAs for students admitted see the statistics section of the Graduate School's website.

Writing Samples

Writing samples are required for application submission. We strongly encourage students to submit a 10-20 page writing sample (1.5 MB limit). This is generally a seminar paper written for a Sociology class. If you have been out of school and have written/co-written and/or published/co-published an article, you may submit that article, too.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

The Duke University Graduate School requires that any applicant whose native language is not English submit scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the academic modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), regardless of whether or not you have attended another U.S. institution or participated in an ESL program. Applicants can request an exemption from this requirement if they studied full-time for two or more years at a college or university where English is the language of instruction. The request should be sent to  [email protected] .

20+ Schools That Don’t Require the GRE in 2024

an image of a deserted ornate loggia with visible trees and foliage at the end to represent grad schools that don't require GRE in 2020 -image by magoosh

Graduate schools across the country are waiving the GRE or loosening their GRE requirements in 2024 to accommodate the needs of their applicants during this crisis—and for very good reason. After all, some countries are unable to offer the new GRE at-home option. Even if GRE students have access to the online test, taking the GRE at home may be a less-than-ideal situation for some test-takers. In this post, we’ll go over grad schools that don’t require the GRE in 2024, along with programs that have changed their GRE policy due to COVID-19, and what all this means for you.

Table of Contents

Graduate schools that are waiving the gre for all programs and all students, specific graduate programs waiving the gre, graduate programs waiving the gre in 2024 under certain conditions, what if my school is not listed above.

  • Which professional programs don’t require the GRE?
  • Which non-doctoral programs don’t require the GRE?
  • Which online graduate programs don’t require the GRE?

  • Additional FAQs

Grad Schools That Don’t Require the GRE in 2024

Graduate schools are making changes to their GRE requirements in a variety of ways. Some schools are going the whole nine yards, waiving the GRE at all or most of their graduate programs for every student applying this year. Other schools have somewhat stricter or less expansive requirements. Some schools are even allowing applicants to submit their ACT or SAT scores instead .

Read on for different examples of how schools and programs are responding to this crisis.

  • Bowling Green State University
  • California State University Long Beach
  • Duke University (with a few exceptions)
  • Florida State University (only select programs)
  • Illinois Institute of Technology (applicants to doctoral programs are still required to submit their scores)
  • Middle Tennessee State University
  • Mississippi State University (only select programs)
  • University of Texas at San Antonio
  • Texas Tech University

Particular programs that are waiving the GRE requirement, even if their school is not waiving the requirement across all programs, include:

  • American University School of Public Affairs (master’s programs only)
  • Harvard University Department of Comparative Literature
  • University of Louisville program in Sociology
  • The University of North Texas School of Public Health
  • Some graduate programs at the University of Illinois

Several business schools have also made test requirement exceptions. Click here for a comprehensive list of these schools as well as other business programs that have changed their standardized testing policy in light of this crisis.

Some schools and programs only waive the GRE for students who are simply unable to take the test or meet other requirements for a waiver. The following programs will consider GRE waivers from students but may not automatically grant the waiver:

  • University of Massachusetts Amherst Isenberg School of Management
  • UC Davis Graduate School of Management
  • University of Rochester Simon Business School

Back to top button - Magoosh

The above lists are clearly not exhaustive, so we highly recommend that you check the websites of specific programs that you’re interested in. If the information about GRE waivers is not readily available, it’s probably safe to say that the program hasn’t made any changes to their policy (yet). Still, it might be worth shooting an email to admissions just to be absolutely certain.

In general, it’s a good idea to stay abreast of any updates released by the schools you’re considering. Many programs, particularly the ones with deadlines at the end of 2024, might still be waiting to see how the crisis develops before changing their standardized testing policies. The uncertainty of the current situation means that things can change at any moment, so it’s best to be prepared by keeping tabs on your programs of choice.

What if my program isn’t listed above?

A general rule of thumb: when it comes to determining whether or not you need to take the GRE (in COVID-19 times and beyond), it’s often a question of which programs , rather than which schools don’t require the GRE. Admissions to grad school tend to be on a program-by-program basis.

If you’re not sure whether your grad school program requires the GRE, it may be worth your time to do some research! Program admissions requirements change all the time, and the best place to get this information is straight from the horse’s mouth. If you can’t find this info on the graduate program admissions websites, email or call the admissions office to see if the program requires the GRE.

Here’s a quick breakdown of which program types may not require the GRE. We’ll explain each type more below as well.

Which professional programs don’t require the GRE?

The good news: there are a few graduate programs for which you almost certainly won’t have to take the GRE. The bad news: these are the programs that usually have their own admissions tests for the field: LSAT for law school, GMAT for business school (although not always— an increasing number of business schools now accept GRE scores ), MCAT for medical school, and so on. No, you almost certainly won’t have to take the GRE in addition to the professional-school test, but some testing, for most programs, is unavoidable.

These programs include:

  • MBA programs (though these can be GMAT-optional, and in a few cases, such as at Emory University , you can apply for a test waiver altogether)
  • JD (Law) programs
  • MD (Medical) programs
  • Some MJ (Journalism) programs, but not all. Check with the program before foregoing the test; for some of the most prestigious in the country, however, like Columbia University and UC-Berkeley , the test is no longer required for admission, but may qualify you for dual-degree programs or fellowships.

Which non-doctoral programs don’t require the GRE?

Many don’t, some do. In many cases, your scores don’t matter for your admissions portfolio, but are required because of general graduate school requirements at the university. Once again, this is a “check with the admissions committee” scenario (but aren’t they all)! Some examples of programs that don’t require the GRE:

  • Many graduate programs at The New School
  • Most graduate programs (but not all!) at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts
  • University of the Arts , where the GRE is “encouraged,” but not required

Which online graduate programs don’t require the GRE?

Many of them! Again. . . not all. But here’s a handful:

  • Southern New Hampshire University
  • University of Maryland Global Campus
  • The University of Illinois online Master’s of Computer Science (though not all University of Illinois programs will waive the requirement!)
  • Other specific programs through different online platforms; check with yours to be sure!

Other Considerations for Grad Schools That Don’t Require the GRE

However, just because a program doesn’t require the GRE, don’t assume that it’s less prestigious or less worthwhile than programs that do. Many “Executive” programs (think “Executive MBA”), targeted at people who have worked in the field for at least several years, require work experience, rather than test scores, as an admissions criterion. Similarly, if your undergrad GPA is outstanding (think over 3.0), programs may waive their GRE requirements. And then there are some schools—but very, very few!—that have decided not to use the GRE as an admissions factor for a variety of graduate programs.

  • The University of Maryland, Baltimore County , like some other schools, doesn’t require GRE scores if your undergraduate GPA was above 3.5 (but you may need to submit a waiver request—common in these scenarios)
  • If you’re applying to Johns Hopkins University’s Engineering for Professionals programs, you don’t have to take the GRE, but you do need to meet other stringent admissions requirements (another common scenario)
  • Some universities, such as Georgia State University , have begun to remove GRE requirements for particular programs (at GSU, these are primarily education-based.

PhD in Sociology in the US without GRE

By Werner June 19, 2013 in Sociology Forum

I am a German student, graduating this July, and I'm considering a PhD in the US. As this is the first time, I'm thinking about the US as a possible location, I came across this GRE exam, which obviously contains a lot of Math.

:)

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but there's no escaping it. You need to take the GRE. However--and I say this as a fellow mathematically challenged person--the GRE is very learnable. The math section is below college-level, and mostly just relies on mastering a few simple tricks. If you put a couple of months of study into the GRE, you'll do fine.

Upvote

Define "mathematically challenged"... I'm having problems adding up my groceries without a calculator while shopping... I've read that NYU doesn't automatically disqualify you, if you do bad at the GRE. I hope that when I'm doing good at the other parts, they'll somehow excuse my complete failure at Math. Looks like, I have to go through this and just try.

ohgoodness

As a fellow European who had no idea about the GRE and had never done standardized tests before; do not quit before you start.

If you are a straight A student in the german system then you should be able to hone your math skills to the level where you pass minimum requirements and then some.   Just do your best on the GRE and work on perfecting all the other things (such as finding good recommendations who are well-known in the U.S.)

As I said, in the German system, you have the possibility to avoid certain subjects. In the German version of Highschool (means 11th, 12th and 13th grade), you have a 15 point mark system, and you need to get at least 5 points to pass and at least 2 points in order to not have to repeat the whole year. I was good at almost everything, but I kept receiving Fs (means 1 point) at Math, so I came to an agreement with my Math teacher that she will give me 2 points and I'll just be present (meaning: attending the classes, but not doing anything)  in order not to screw up my Highschool diploma, as it would be stupid not to pass just because of one subject. And, as I said, at university, any field of studies not involving Physics, Math, Biology, Chemistry or Economics has no need and no contact with Math whatsoever (which is the main reason why I am a straight A student).

This means that I lack the very basics of what would be required to pass the Math part of the GRE exam (I took a look at it, and you could as well give me the task to write a summary of Macbeth in Chinese). However, I will try, as you said, to get some good recommendations and do the writing parts as good as possible. I hope that'll do it.

Apart from the GRE, something else you should seriously consider is the fact that most sociology graduate programs will require you to take one or two (sometimes three) statistics courses. Many social science programs -- anthropology, sociology, and psychology included -- require stats. If you wish to avoid math altogether, and you cannot find a school where stats and the GRE are not required, you may want to consider a graduate program in the humanities, such as cultural studies. Wishing you all the best, both on the GRE and in your program search. Keep us posted on your progress.

The New School does not require GRE, but scholarships are very limited.

More important than the entry-barrier to a US PhD program, is the long term consideration.  One cannot operate as a professional sociologist without at least a pedestrian comprehension of statistical methods, even if you do not yourself use the methods in your own work.

The GRE involves high school level math.  The real challenge is practicing to learn how to do the problems quickly within the time limits, and getting used to solving them strategically.  Like @ohgoodness said, don't stop before you've started.  The GRE practice books are very good.

It's important to realize that some programs put a greater emphasis on qualitative analyses while other put an emphasis on quantitative analyses. Other programs give you a choice. If you feel you are stronger in qualitative analyses, maybe you should look into programs that emphasize qualitative analyses. Brandeis, for example, specializes in qualitative ( http://www.brandeis.edu/departments/sociology/ ).That said, quantitative analyses and statistics are very important to comprehend in sociology, both to produce your own research and to understand the research of others.

Of course, statistics and "math" (like calculus) are very different. Math also isn't my strongest subject (the highest math course I ever took, which was over 10 years ago, was calculus I) but I did pretty well in statistics courses because I had great professors and because the math in the required stats classes that I took isn't higher than 10th grade math...it's mostly comprehending concepts and understanding how everything works together. Higher level stats does require calc knowledge and gets VERY complex but the math in most required stats classes (probably even at the PhD level) is pretty basic. Most of your work will probably be on the computer anyway.

I wouldn't worry that much about the GRE - the math isn't too hard (again, when I took it, back in 2011, it wasn't higher than 10th grade math) and I found the Kaplan review books very easy to understand and helpful. The GRE software is also VERY helpful...and I found the practice materials from Kaplan to be much more challenging than the actual GRE.

I signed into this blog simply because of you there are very many (high quality too) universities in the USA where GRE may not be considered. I am in the same position as you and I have applied to many given to me by this wonderful who is helping people like you and I - check out her website and see for yourself the number of people who want to avoid GRE. I certainly want to avoid it, I do not at all see the relevance. 100% of people who study the same subjects in Europe for which GRE is required in the US do perfectly well after their studies if not better in many subjects. I do not see the relevance of GRE when Maths is not needed in your career - although Maths may well be important as a subject but having to pay so much dollars for an unnecessary GRE that may well determine the grade you may eventually get for graduation I think is unnecessary. It is also not cheap when you consider that like you if you're not good in Maths you may have to take tuition which is not cheap at all in any country or buy GRE tuition manuals etc which might set you back at least $500 - 700 to be able to bush up to the level to be accepted at the universities you may like in the US. Please check this lady's website, all subjects are covered and whatever you do not know she will go all out to find it for you and reply back too in 24hrs less.  http://ainsleydiduca.com/grad-schools-dont-require-gre/

I have even applied to a course at MIT which is one of the most prestigious Universities in the world for a course that does not require any GRE and you will be fully funded as well if accepted on the PhD course. Good luck. P

Good luck. Patrick

I don't mean to be that guy, but I'm probably going to be seen that way anyway. The gre math probably is learnable, but if you're mathematically challenged, no it is not easy because it's a trick test. Let's be honest here, the test is a tool to weed out applicants as any hr dept where you apply for a job does the same thing, trying to weed you out. The test is full of biases and does not test your intelligence, so it lacks any educational value. It tests your ability to pass a standardized exam of analytical writing, english verbal skills and algebra, geometry, trig and a little stats by throwing questions designed to trip you up. In a format that's harder than if it were on paper, as it used to be way back in the day. It isn't right, it isn't fair, but it's there and unforunately you have to deal w/it here. It was an ordeal for me, I didn't do well, despite giving it everything I had for 3 months and even though for me my score was good. But it was relatively poor (compared to other applicants) and your percentile rank is probably more important than the raw score, for some programs anyway.  You probably can do better than me and my guess is I'll have to take it again next year... just do the work and get through as best you can, hopefully that will help you get in somewhere.

Program Requirements

Updated October 2023

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GRADUATE PROGRAM: A SUMMARY

1. Credits: MA: 10 courses, 6 in sociology. PhD: 16 courses, 10 in sociology. 2. Transfer of credit: up to 8 graduate course units may be transferred from other institutions after 1 year at Penn, upon approval of the Graduate Chair and the Dean. Courses in statistical methodology require an additional layer of approval: they must also be approved by the current instructors of the equivalent graduate class at Penn. At least 12 courses must be completed at Penn, with 10 of these in sociology. Forms for transfer credit are available from the Graduate Coordinator. 3. Grading of courses: 16 courses must receive a grade of “B” or better. Up to 4 independent study courses may be taken on a Satisfactory basis.

4. Graduate students will not receive credit for completing undergraduate courses. During the enrollment period students should be mindful of classes that have the same title but different numbers. Graduate students must enroll in graduate classes to receive credit.

5. Students should avoid incompletes (i.e., an “I”). If students fail to complete the work for a class in the term following the granting of the incomplete, the I will administratively become an F. 6. Departmental activity participation: Weekly attendance at the Sociology Colloquium and membership in at least one cluster workshop.

7. At the end of each year all students, including students intending to graduate, will submit a progress report. Students will be provided a form for this report. The reports will be circulated to the faculty in anticipation of the May faculty meeting wherein student progress is evaluated. Students will receive a letter following this meeting, containing information on their progress.

8. Teaching requirement: Graduate students will serve as a Teaching Assistant for two years (4 semesters), typically during the 2nd and 3rd years of the program.

9. Completion of a Second Year Paper (Equivalent to M.A. thesis or a publishable paper)

10. Students are strongly encouraged to submit their thesis, second-year paper, and other work to peer-reviewed journals, as per a faculty advisors’ recommendations.

11. Completion of two qualifying examinations.

12. Graduate students will defend their dissertation proposal at a meeting of their dissertation committee before advancing to candidacy.

13. Ideally, students should meet with their advisors every semester. Students at the dissertation stage must meet with each member of their committee at least once a year.

14. Complete a dissertation and publicly present the dissertation research at a defense, open to the university community. After the dissertation is approved by the dissertation committee, submit a final version to the graduate office.

15. Students are strongly encouraged to submit their pre-defense dissertation in the format required for deposit by the University, including margin requirements. This format requirement sometimes presents challenges for students whose dissertations include numerous large tables or graphics. See the section “Dissertation Format Requirements” in this manual for details.

16. The graduate program in sociology is also governed by all the University of Pennsylvania policies articulated in the PennBook, as well as the policies of the SAS Graduate Division.

A TYPICAL PROGRAM OF GRADUATE STUDY

Course requirements:

Soc 5550: Proseminar (non-credit; not required for incoming joint students)

Soc 5350/5351: Quantitative Methods

Soc 6020: Classical Sociological Theory

Soc 6040: Research Methods

At least 2 Other Sociology Classes

During the first year, students are assigned preliminary advisers. This procedure was created to help students to get to know the faculty as new students, as well as to provide assistance in making the most of their early years of study. Students are not required to maintain this faculty member as their primary advisor, though they can do so if they wish.

Soc 7070/7071: Second Year Research Seminar, plus at least 4 electives, of which at least 2 must be in sociology. Additional requirements:

1. Serve as a Teaching Assistant for 2 courses.

2. Second Year Paper (Equivalent to M.A. thesis or a publishable paper), approved in time for the faculty evaluation of student progress in May. The MA Thesis/Second Year Paper must be advised by a committee of three faculty members, including two standing faculty in sociology. The committee chair must be a standing faculty member in sociology. To maintain good standing, the Second Year Paper requirement must be completed to the satisfaction of the committee. Completion of this requirement is necessary for formal entry into the doctoral program.

Soc 6200: Sociological Research II

Complete all coursework (for a total of 16 CUs) Additional requirements:

1. Complete first comprehensive exam (by May 1).

2. Serve as a Teaching Assistant for 2 courses. 3. Form a dissertation committee consisting of at least three faculty members, including two standing faculty members in sociology (by May 1). The committee chair must be a member of the standing faculty in sociology.

Requirements:

1. Complete second comprehensive exam (by December 15). 2. Defend dissertation proposal (by December 15).

Students will typically begin working on their dissertation immediately after their defense, allowing as much time as possible for its completion during year 5.

Students who have not completed both comprehensive exams and successfully defended their dissertation proposal by the end of their first term of year 4 will be considered not in good standing.

1. Dissertation defense and submission of final version to the graduate office.

2. Complete a public presentation of the dissertation research, open to the university community. The public presentation and dissertation defense can occur during the same meeting, beginning with a public presentation, followed by a defense that may involve only the student and his/her committee.

An ideal course of study will take five years, but there will be cases in which it will take longer to complete all the requirements. Years beyond the fifth are expected to be devoted to the completion of the dissertation. Students are expected to continue to meet with their advisor.

Students who are not in good standing should be working full time on completing their program requirements. They are not eligible for teaching or Teaching Assistant positions, or for any other paid or unpaid positions. The department will not be able to recommend students for fellowships until they are once again in good standing.

For the graduate program in sociology, the dissertation proposal defense fulfills the university’s requirement of a Candidacy Examination. According to the University’s Academic Rules for PhD Programs ( https://catalog.upenn.edu/pennbook/academic-rules-phd /), “Upon successful completion of the Candidacy Examination, the student is advanced to candidacy. Normally, a student should advance to candidacy by the end of the third year. The maximum time limit for a student to be advanced to candidacy is five years, after which time the student will be dropped from the program.”

Program Requirements

Migration, Ethnicity, Race, Nation Workshop

Migration, Ethnicity, Race, Nation Workshop

The following program requirements apply to students who entered the Ph.D program in 2010-11 or later; students admitted prior to 2010 should consult the department or the  Bulletin from their year of admission  for requirements specific to their cohort. Please review the department's Doctoral Program Handbook for more details on each requirement.

Students must complete the following department requirements for the Ph.D. degree in Sociology:

  • Proseminar:  Students must enroll in  SOC 305  Graduate Proseminar in Autumn Quarter of the first year. The course provides an introduction and orientation to the field of sociology, and to the department and faculty.
  • Colloquium:  The Sociology Colloquium is a semi-monthly seminar held throughout the academic year, in which distinguished scholars lecture about their cutting-edge research. This course,  SOC 396 , is required for all first and second years.
  • Minimum sociology units in years 1 and 2:  Students are required to complete 45 units of course work in Sociology in the first academic year, then 15 units of Sociology course work in the second academic year.
  • Theory:  Students are required to take two courses in sociological theory. The first course is macro-sociological theory:  SOC 370A  Sociological Theory: Social Structure, Inequality, and Conflict, and the second course:  SOC 372  Theoretical Analysis and Design, should be taken during the first year of the program.
  • Methodology:  Students are required to complete a four course series in methodology. The required methods sequence, to be taken are: SOC 380 Qualitative Methods,  SOC 381  Sociological Methodology I: Introduction,  SOC 382  Sociological Methodology II: Multivariate Regression,  SOC 383  Sociological Methodology III.
  • Survey Courses:  Students must complete four broad survey courses to demonstrate command of a range of sociological literature.
  • Workshops:  Beginning in year two, doctoral students are required to enroll in at least one workshop each quarter.
  • Qualifying Exam #1:  The first comprehensive examination is designed to ensure that students enter their second year with a firm reading knowledge of two substantive subfields. Students write two essays in response to questions provided by the examining committee. Students choose one of two questions to write on for each subfield. Examinations are offered in a variety of subject areas, and are based on comprehensive readings lists that are available at the beginning of each academic year.
  • Qualifying Exam #2 : In their second year of residence, students must pass qualifying exam #2, which is a research paper that is intended to provide students with a more focused engagement in a specialized subfield or research area, and tests the student’s ability to work and think independently. Second year students are required to enroll in  SOC 385A  Research Practicum 1 and  SOC 385B  Research Practicum II  (both workshops assist in developing the front end of the research paper). Students must submit a one-page proposal to the reading committee that includes a brief statement of the problem; a preliminary research design; a data source and proof of reasonable access to it; and a short reading list. Students should produce a paper that makes an original contribution to sociological knowledge and that is ultimately publishable. That generally means writing a paper that includes data analysis; a full and focused analytic discussion of relevant theory and research; and frame the findings as a contribution to the literature. Students may also produce a paper with a primarily theoretical contribution so long as the prospects for eventual publication are clear to the committee. This paper may not also be employed to meet the Third Year Paper requirement, even in revised form.
  • Third Year Paper:  In preparation for a career of writing scholarly papers, each student must complete a research paper in the third year of residency. This third-year paper may be on any sociological topic, and may address theoretical, empirical, or methodological issues. The paper is expected to reflect original work and be of publishable quality. Students select a committee of at least two Sociology faculty members to serve as third year paper readers.
  • Conference Presentation:  Students are required to present at least two papers at a major professional meeting (e.g., ASA), department workshops, or a combination of the two in their first five years of graduate study.
  • Dissertation Prospectus and Prospectus Defense:  In order to demonstrate the ability to conduct independent scholarly work, each student must prepare and defend dissertation prospectus by the end of May during the fourth year in residence.
  • Doctoral Dissertation and Defense:  Each student must complete and defend a doctoral dissertation. At the choice of the student (and in consultation with his/her adviser), the dissertation requirement may be met either by (1) submitting a book-length document, or (2) submitting three independent papers. The papers may address the same topic, but should be written as stand-alone, single-authored papers in standard journal format (i.e., AJS or ASR). None of these papers may overlap substantially with one another, and none of them may be co-authored. (The main criterion in judging substantial overlap is whether any standard journal, such as AJS, would regard the papers as too similar to publish both.) The dissertation must be submitted to all committee members at least 30 days in advance of the defense date. The dissertation defense serves as the  Oral Examination required by the University . Assessment of satisfactory completion is determined by the student's doctoral committee members. All students are invited to present their dissertation findings at an informal department colloquium.

Students must complete a minimum of  three quarters of teaching apprenticeship in departmental courses, or in other courses by approval. Students working as either a teaching assistant (TA) under the supervision of a faculty member or as a teaching fellow (TF) fulfills this requirement. Students are required to take  SOC 300, Workshop: The Art & Joy of Teaching , in the first year. In addition, students are encouraged to take advantage of department and University teacher training programs. Students for whom English is a second language are expected to acquire sufficient facility in English to be an effective teacher.  It is recommended that students complete their teaching requirements early in their graduate program; the requirement must be completed by the end of the fourth year of residency.

As partial preparation for becoming an accomplished researcher, each student must complete three quarters of research experience, working under the supervision of one or more faculty members, including regular, emeritus, and affiliated faculty. The experience may involve paid (or unpaid) work as a Research Assistant (RA). With the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies, research experience may be acquired by involvement in research projects outside the department. It is recommended that students complete their research requirements early in their graduate program; the requirement must be completed by the end of the fourth year of residency.

At any point during the degree program, evidence that a student is performing at a less than satisfactory level may be cause for a formal academic review of that student.

The Department of Political Science does not embrace any particular philosophy or approach to the study of political science. We offer courses and research opportunities in a wide variety of fields in the discipline (see  Research Areas  below). Our principal goal is the training of scholars. The small size of our student body allows more individual work with members of the faculty than most graduate programs. It also makes possible financial assistance in one form or another to most students admitted to the Ph.D. program.

Our graduate program is built around small seminars that analyze critically the literature of a field or focus on a research problem. These courses prepare students for the Ph.D. comprehensive exam requirement within a two-year period and for work on the doctoral dissertation.

We offer a PhD in Political Science. The Department does not offer a master’s degree for external applicants. Only students currently enrolled in a PhD or professional school program at Stanford University may apply for a Master of Arts (MA) in Political Science.

The Ph.D. program is designed to be completed in five years of full-time study. Actual time depends on students' progress, research and travel requirements, and fields of study. The minimum residence requirement for the Ph.D. degree is 135 units of completed coursework, which takes approximately four years.  The fifth year is typically spent writing the dissertation.

Requirements vary depending on which fields a student elects to study. The minimum residence requirement for the Ph.D. degree is 135 units of completed coursework, which takes approximately four years.  The fifth year is typically spent writing the dissertation. All students must complete five units of graduate instruction in Political Theory unless previously taken as an undergraduate, and take a two-quarter sequence in quantitative methods. A language might also be required if the student and advisor think it appropriate for dissertation research. Beginning in their second year, students serve as teaching assistants in undergraduate courses for a minimum of three quarters, but most will serve as many as five quarters.

Students are required to satisfy the Ph.D. comprehensive examination requirements in one field as well as take coursework and fulfill any additional requirements in a second and third field and write at least one research paper. Upon completion of these three requirements, the student is eligible to be recommended for Ph.D. candidacy. It is expected that students will attain candidacy by the end of the second year. In their third year, students are asked to submit a formal dissertation proposal for approval. Doctoral candidates form a Dissertation Reading Committee in the fourth year and take the University Oral Examination after they have made substantial progress on their dissertations. Students must finish all requirements and file a thesis to receive their Ph.D. degree.

See the  requirements page  for more details.

Most students who receive doctorates in the program do research and teach at colleges or universities. In recent years, they have obtained positions in political science departments at such institutions as the University of California at Berkeley, UCLA, Harvard, NYU, M.I.T., Princeton, Yale, Southern California, Virginia, and Wellesley. Others have positions in research organizations like RAND, and still others have positions in university administration and government. Click to see the  list of recent placements .

Visit the  Graduate Student Gateway .

No. The Ph.D. program requires students to be present on campus and in-person for each quarter enrolled. The Ph.D. program is a full-time program and may not be completed on a part time basis.

Can you tell me more about the JD/PhD program? How do I apply for it? How long does it take? How much does it cost?

Information on the JD/PhD program is available  here .

Please review the information on the ‘ Guide on Getting Into Grad School .’ We are not able to speculate on an applicant's chances of admission, or review application materials prior to application, or provide guidance on individual applications beyond what is provided on the Political Science department website and the Guide to Getting Into Grad School.

The costs of pursuing graduate study at Stanford depend on various factors, including student's housing preferences and family circumstances, among other factors. Information about financing graduate study and typical expenses for graduate students can be found through  Graduate Admissions.  Information about our financial support, which usually covers tuition and living expenses, follows below.

The Department intends that all graduate students (both domestic and international) should have adequate support to enable them to complete their studies while enrolled full-time.  The standard financial package offered to admitted students covers the full cost of tuition and an additional amount for living expenses . The latter amount comes in the form of a stipend during the first year and a combination of teaching and research assistantships during years 2-5.  The Department also provides students with annual funds for professional development and health insurance fees. The Department provides five years of support for Ph.D. students who are making sufficient progress towards degree.   Current information regarding tuition, fees, and living expenses .

Funded PhD students in good standing are eligible to receive 12 months of funding each year, for as long as five years.

In addition to providing the standard package described above, the Department will provide each student $1,500 in discretionary funds every year in year 1-5.  Most students use this money to fund professional development expenses, including language study, faculty guided research and field work. In addition, funded PhD students in good standing are eligible to receive 12 months of funding each year for as long as five years, which provides students with the possibility of conducting field work during the summer. It is also possible to use pre-doc fellowship funds to support field work during the later years of the program. There are also numerous opportunities to supplement the funding by the department with grants and stipends from university research centers, such as the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies , the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences (IRiSS), and the Stanford King Center on Global Development .

Join dozens of Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences students who gain valuable leadership skills in a multidisciplinary, multicultural community as Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS).   KHS admits up to 100 select applicants each year from across Stanford’s seven graduate schools, and delivers engaging experiences that prepare them to be visionary, courageous, and collaborative leaders ready to address complex global challenges. As a scholar, you join a distinguished cohort, participate in up to three years of leadership programming, and receive full funding for up to three years of your PhD studies at Stanford.   Candidates of any country may apply. KHS applicants must have earned their first undergraduate degree within the last seven years, and must apply to both a Stanford graduate program and to KHS. Stanford PhD students may also apply to KHS during their first year of PhD enrollment.   If you aspire to be a leader in your field, we invite you to apply. The KHS application deadline is October 11, 2023. Learn more about KHS admission .

The department offers teaching and research opportunities in  five major research areas : American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Methodology, and Political Theory. In addition, there are ample opportunities for graduate study in related departments at the university.

How can I find out if your faculty does research in my area of interest?

You can access more specific information about particular faculty members by going to the  faculty page.

No. It is not necessary or possible to secure an advisor before admission to the program. Offers of admission are made to the program, not to work with particular advisors. Applicants are encouraged to read the  Admissions FAQ  and contact politicalscience [at] stanford.edu (subject: Admissions%20Enquiries) (politicalscience[at]stanford[dot]edu) with any general admissions questions before contacting faculty.

Is Political Science a required major to apply to your graduate program?

No, the department does not require that prospective students be political science majors. On the other hand, the department does expect that prospective students have had sufficient exposure to the field for them to develop a clear statement of purpose for attending our graduate program. In addition, as part of the application materials, applicants are required to submit a written sample that will certainly justify students having previously studied political science.

Is a master’s degree required for admission?

No, a master’s degree is not required for admission, although roughly one-third of our applicants have completed a graduate degree prior to application to the PhD program.

No, students are not required to have taken advanced courses in quantitative methods as a prerequisite for admission. In fact, the department offers a four quarter sequence in quantitative methods that introduces first and second year students to methodological tools that they can later use in their chosen fields of study. This sequence does not assume that students have had prior exposure to statistics or advanced mathematics. In addition to the sequence, the department offers a math refresher course for three weeks prior to the start of classes in the fall for all students. Note, however, that there are certain areas of study (such as American politics and political behavior) that will require more training in quantitative methods beyond the first-year sequence. Opportunities to pursue advanced work in quantitative methods exist both within and outside the department (e.g., taking courses in the economics and statistics departments).

The Department rarely accepts the transfer of previous graduate work toward fulfilling pre-candidacy course requirements. However, students with previous graduate work may be able to count some of their previous course credits toward the university residency requirement, thus reducing the time required for the Ph.D. degree. The university may allow a maximum of 45 units for work done elsewhere in another graduate program. Transfer credit is subject to the approval of the Office of the University Registrar, and there is no guarantee that transfer credit will be awarded. Students cannot apply for transfer credit until they have completed at least one quarter of study at Stanford.

Can you provide some guidelines for preparation? How are applications evaluated?

Admission to our program is highly competitive. The selection of PhD students admitted to the Department of Political Science is based on an individualized, holistic review of each application, including (but not limited to) the applicant’s academic record, the letters of recommendation, the scores on the General GRE (Graduate Record Examination), the statement of purpose, and the writing sample. About 12-15 students, chosen from a large pool of applicants, enter the program every year. These students are chosen on the basis of a strong academic background as evidenced by previous study, test results, writing sample, and letters of recommendation. Although we have no official score requirement, admitted students typically have GRE scores of 166+ verbal, 163+ quantitative, and a score of 5.5 in the analytical section.  Admitted students typically have a GPA of at least 3.8 in their previous studies. Please be assured that the department reviews each application very carefully and makes decisions on an individual basis.

The Political Science department recognizes that the Supreme Court issued a ruling in June 2023 about the consideration of certain types of demographic information as part of an admission review. All applications submitted during upcoming application cycles will be reviewed in conformance with that decision.

Regrettably, we are not able to speculate on an applicant's chances of admission, or review application materials prior to application, or provide guidance on individual applications beyond what is provided on this website.

Admission committees follow guidelines established by the university and the department to ensure a fair review of application materials and the selection of a high quality pool of incoming students. An  overview of graduate admission  and study at Stanford is available.

The Political Science department recognizes that the Supreme Court issued a ruling in June 2023 about the consideration of certain types of demographic information as part of an admission review. All applications submitted during upcoming application cycles will be reviewed in conformance with that decision.

No, all applications will be considered. However, admission to our program is highly competitive. Admitted students typically have very high GRE scores (approximately 166+ verbal, 163+ quantitative, and a score of 5.5 in the Analytical section).  Admitted students typically have a GPA of at least 3.8 in their previous studies.

One year deferrals are granted only for serious and unforeseen circumstances that occur after the time of application. The one exception to that policy is that one year deferrals are allowed for students who will spend the next academic year at Stanford Law School as part of the Stanford joint JD/PhD program. Deferral requests to allow students to attend another university for a different degree program (such as a JD) are highly unlikely to be granted. Deferrals for longer than one academic year are not possible. Students should only apply during this admissions cycle if they intend to be at Stanford for the next academic year.

You must apply online via the  Graduate Admissions  web site. Note that online applications require the use of a credit card.

The deadline to apply for admission for the 2024-25 academic year is 11:59pm (Pacific time) on December 5, 2023. Regrettably, we are unable to accept  late applications.

No. We begin reviewing all applications after the application deadline and make all admissions decisions by the end of February. There is no advantage to applying early.

To check your application status, click the Visit Your Status Page button here . Due to the number of applications that we receive we cannot confirm receipt of any application documents or tell you if your application is complete.

Letters of recommendation: Your Status Page will update automatically when letters of recommendation are received. Contact your recommendation writers (not the department) if you are missing letters of recommendation. Additional information about letters of recommendation is below in the Letter of Recommendation section of the FAQ's.

Transcripts:  Official transcripts are not required at the time of application. If you are offered admission to Stanford and accept the offer, you will be required to submit official transcripts that show your degree conferral. Please do not send official transcripts with your application.

All applications, even those marked as "awaiting materials," will be considered by the committee.

Offers of admission will be made in late February. Admitted applicants will be invited to attend our Ph.D. Admit Visit to be held in early April.

September 15, 2023

No, students may only enter the program during the fall quarter.

A complete application consists of the following documentation:

  • Stanford online application including  statement of purpose
  • At least three  letters of recommendation
  • Unofficial transcripts from each institution you attended for at least one year (Official transcripts are not required at the time of application. If you are offered admission to Stanford and accept the offer, you will be required to submit official transcripts that show your degree conferral.)
  • General  GRE and TOEFL scores  reported directly to Stanford (code 4704) - Learn more about these  test requirements .  GRE scores are required for the Fall 2023 admissions cycle.  We will accept results from the ETS home tests.
  • Writing Sample : a recent scholarly or critical paper (20-35 pages, double-spaced). Applicants may submit two or three shorter samples if they do not have a long one. Writing samples must be written in English.
  • Application fee of $125. Information on Graduate Fee Waivers is available  here .

Please refer to the  Office of Graduate Admissions Frequently Asked Questions  for additional information on the application process and requirements.

In general, no. In most cases, you will be considered for any available departmental funding awards when you apply for graduate study, and a separate application is not necessary. Note that in order to be considered for Knight-Hennessy Scholars , you must submit a separate application.

The Statement of Purpose should describe succinctly your reasons for applying to the proposed program at Stanford, your preparation for this field of study, research interests, future career plans, and other aspects of your background and interests which may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your aptitude and motivation for graduate study. The Statement of Purpose should not exceed two single spaced pages (this is approximately 1,000 words). Additional information on crafting your statement of purpose is available here .

Yes, submitting a CV is required. Applications may upload a CV under "Experience" in the application.

Fee waivers are available for some applicants. Please visit Graduate Admissions for information on applying for an  Application Fee Waiver . Please do not contact the Department to request a fee waiver as unfortunately, we are unable to grant them.

Be sure to submit your fee waiver request at least 10 business days (two weeks) before the application deadline to ensure a timely decision.

Applying to the Knight-Hennessy Scholars is not required in order to be admitted to the Political Science PhD program or to receive a funding package from the department.

You may update your application on your status page after submitting your application as follows:

  • Recommenders, Test Scores and Contact Information (email, phone, address) may be updated anytime before or after the application deadline. However, after December 15 there is no guarantee the Admissions Committee will see the updates as they will have already begun reviewing applications.
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Writing Sample
  • Unofficial transcripts
  • The application system will allow you to update items in Additional Information anytime before or after the deadline.  However, after December 15 there is no guarantee the Admissions Committee will review the updates as they will have already begun reviewing applications. In addition, the Committee will still see the original versions of your documents if you submit new versions under Additional Information.

Does the 20-35 page writing sample page limit include the table of contents, bibliography, and appendices?

No. The table of contents, bibliography, and appendices are not included in the 20-35 page writing sample.

Submit a request to Graduate Admissions (application login required).

Yes, GRE scores are required for all applicants. We are not able to grant waivers or make exceptions to the GRE requirement. We will accept test results from Educational Testing Service (ETS) home tests. If you are unable to take the GRE either at a testing center or via the at-home testing service by the application deadline, unfortunately you will need to wait until the next application cycle to apply.

No other exams (including the LSAT or GMAT) are accepted in lieu of the GRE.

Yes, all applicants must submit GRE scores, even if they have completed an advanced degree.

If you instructed ETS to send your test scores Stanford more than two weeks ago and your GRE or TOEFL scores are still shown as "Awaiting" on your Status Page, please  submit a help request  to Graduate Admissions.

Important: it may take up to two weeks from the date you you asked ETS to send the scores for test scores to be "Received" on your Status Page.  Please do not request that ETS send scores again or contact Graduate Admissions to ask why your scores are listed as "Awaiting" if it has been less than two weeks since you submitted your application to Stanford. For example, if you sent your scores on December 1st, you can expect your test scores to appear as "Received" on your status page by December 15th.

If we haven't received official scores by the time the admissions committee begins review, we will consider your application with unofficial scores. This will not harm your chances of admission. We will, however, need to receive official scores from ETS before making an offer of admission.

Will my application be reviewed if my official GRE/TOEFL scores arrive after the deadline?

Yes. Any scores you self-report on the application are considered unofficial but sufficient for the initial review process. If we haven't received official scores for all sections by the time the admissions committee begins review, we will consider your application with the unofficial scores submitted in your online application. We will need to receive official scores for all sections of the GRE from ETS before making an official offer of admission.

However, your unofficial GRE/TOEFL scores for all sections of the tests must be included in your application by the application deadline. This means that you must have taken the GRE/TOEFL prior to the application deadline. If you are unable to submit unofficial test scores for all sections of the test by the application deadline, we recommend that you wait to apply until the next application cycle.

I asked ETS to send my GRE scores in a previous year. Do I need to resubmit my GRE scores?

If you had ETS send scores to Stanford prior to June 1, 2022 you will need to resubmit them.

We follow ETS policies on score validity (five years for GRE scores, two years for TOEFL scores). Refer to Test Scores for the earliest test date Stanford considers to be valid for the current application cycle.

Yes. List all GRE tests you took within the past five years that you wish to be considered by the admission committee. Do not enter “superscores” (a single entry that includes your highest section scores from multiple test dates). The application system will automatically display to the admission committee the highest score you earned in each section as well as all reported scores.

Please ask your letter writers to upload their letters no later than December 15th. If you do not have three letters of recommendation by then, your file will still be passed to the faculty committee for consideration.  While recommenders may upload outstanding letters after December 15th, there's no guarantee they will be read as the committee will have already begun its work.

One of my letter writers is having technical issues submitting their letters of recommendation. Who should they contact?

They should use the link in the recommendation request email they received when you registered them as a recommendation writer to request technical support.  Please do not instruct letter writers to contact the department for help with technical issues. Additional information for recommendation writers is available  here .

Letters of recommendation can technically be submitted via interfolio; however, recommenders are required to respond to specific evaluation questions that are only available when letters are submitted directly using the online application system. Please ask your recommenders to submit their letters directly using the online application system. Please remember that letters written specifically for your Stanford graduate program tend to be stronger than letters written for general use purposes.

You may manage your recommenders on the same Recommendations page where you registered them. This includes sending reminder emails and changing recommenders. You continue to have access to this page after you submit your application.

To change one of your recommenders: on the Recommendations page of the application, click on the recommender’s name you wish to replace, then click Exclude at the bottom of the resulting popup window. You then will see the option to add a new recommender. The recommender you exclude will not receive an email notification.

The department expects to see three letters of recommendation per application. Applicants may enter up to four recommenders and all letters of recommendation submitted by the December 15th deadline will be considered in the review process. However, there is no automatic advantage or disadvantage to submitting more than three letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation will be evaluated solely on what they say about an applicant’s academic potential for graduate work, not on how many are submitted.

Letters of recommendation should come from academic or professional references who know you well and are qualified to evaluate your potential for graduate study. It is strongly recommended that at least one of these letters be from a university professor familiar with your academic work. Please see here for additional information.

No. Your recommenders may submit their letters before or after you submit your application.

Do I need to submit official transcripts at the time of application?

No. Official transcripts are not required at the time of application. You must list and provide your unofficial transcript for every post-secondary institution where you were enrolled — or are currently enrolled — in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.

If you are offered admission to Stanford and accept the offer, you will be required to submit official transcripts that show your degree conferral.

No, this is not necessary. Applicants may upload updated transcripts via their Status Page until the application deadline.

If you were enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at that school, then yes. If you are offered admission to Stanford and accept the offer, you will not be required to submit official transcripts for schools you attended for less than one academic year or on a part-time basis.

In lieu of a transcript, please upload a document that includes the courses that are in progress.

Yes, as long as you must submit original language records with official English translations. We accept translations issued by the institution or a professional translating service. Translations must be literal and complete versions of the original records.

You are asked to enter both GPA and GPA scale for each institution you list on the application. Enter your GPA as it appears on your transcript. Do not convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale if it's reported on a different scale.

Information for international applicants  is available from Graduate Admissions.

Stanford’s assessment of a post-secondary degree is based on the characteristics of a national educational system, the type of institution you attended, and the level of studies you completed. Refer to the Eligibility page to view the minimum level of study you should have achieved from a recognized academic institution to enroll in graduate study at Stanford. Contact  Stanford’s Office of Graduate Admissions  (not the Department of Political Science) with any further questions.

Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) to be eligible for admission, unless you are exempt or successfully apply for a waiver (see below).

Applicants must score at least 100 on the Internet-based TOEFL in order to be eligible for admission, though admitted applicants typically score at least 115.

We accept the TOEFL iBT Home Edition and TOEFL iBT Paper Edition if you are unable to take the traditional TOEFL iBT test in a test center. If you take the Home Edition or Paper Edition, you may be required to complete additional English placement testing prior to enrollment.

Am I exempt from submitting TOEFL scores?

You are automatically exempt from submitting a TOEFL score if you meet one the following criteria:

     A. You (will) have a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a regionally- accredited college or university in the United States (territories and possessions excluded).

     B. You (will) have an equivalent degree from an English-language university in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.

If you are offered admission, the official transcript must be received showing conferral of the degree from the qualifying institution or TOEFL exam scores will be required to enroll.

You may request a TOEFL waiver in the online application if you (will) have a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a recognized institution in a country other than Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom in which English was the language of instruction.

  • You will be asked to provide the URL for the page on your institution's official website stating the language of instruction.
  • If your institution offers instruction in languages other than English, you must upload an official statement from your institution certifying that your program was taught exclusively in English.

Your waiver request will be routed to Graduate Admissions after you submit your application. Allow up to 15 business days after submitting your application for a response. This will not delay the receipt of your application by your graduate program.

Please note that the department of Political Science does not evaluate TOEFL waiver requests. Direct all questions to Stanford's Office of Graduate Admissions.

For the current application cycle, TOEFL scores from tests taken on or after September 1, 2021 are valid.

No. We do not accept TOEFL Essentials scores or any other English proficiency test (e.g., IELTS, PTE) or coursework in lieu of the TOEFL.

Yes, both international and domestic students receive the same funding package from the department. See  here for further information .

No, the use of these services is encouraged but not required. See here for more information on submitting transcripts.

No, the admissions committee is not available for consultation. We are not able to speculate on an applicant's chances of admission, or review application materials prior to application, or provide guidance on individual applications beyond what is provided on this website.

Applicants may try to contact faculty before applying to discuss their interest in the PhD program, though it is not required nor expected. It is not necessary or possible to secure an advisor before admission to the program. Applicants are admitted to the program, not to work with particular faculty. Applicants are encouraged to read the  Admissions FAQ  and contact  politicalscience [at] stanford.edu (politicalscience[at]stanford[dot]edu)  with any admissions questions prior to contacting faculty.

Yes. The department invites admitted students to campus for a visit in April. This event is an excellent opportunity to talk to faculty and students about specific concerns or questions a prospective student may have.

The Department does not offer a master’s degree for external applicants. Applicants interested in a master’s degree should look into the  Ford Dorsey Masters in International Policy . Current doctoral students from within the Stanford Political Science department or in another Stanford University department may apply for a Master of Arts in Political Science during the course of their Ph.D. program. Master's candidates must take 45 units of course work, and 25 of those units must be in graduate seminars. There is no examination or thesis requirement.

  • Optional: You may submit GRE General Test results if you wish.
  • Not Accepted: Do not submit GRE General Test results. GRE General Test scores will not be considered when applications are reviewed.

Sending GRE Scores

When taking the GRE, you will have an opportunity to request that your scores be sent to your academic institutions of choice. Be sure to select Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (formerly Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences) as each Harvard admissions office has its own ETS school code. To ensure that your scores are matched to your applicant record, the First Name, Last Name, and Date of Birth on your test score report must match the information you enter in the Applicant Portal. GRE score reports must be sent to Harvard Griffin GSAS by the application deadline.

  • Use ETS code 3451 to send GRE scores to Harvard Griffin GSAS. A department code is not required.
  • GRE scores are valid for no longer than five years. If you are applying for admission for fall 2024, you may submit GRE scores from tests taken no earlier than January 5, 2019.
  • ETS will not send official score reports for tests taken more than five years from the original test date. If you are no longer able to send your scores from ETS, you will need to submit scores from a new test.
  • An official score report from Educational Testing Service (ETS) to Harvard Griffin GSAS is required. If you have personal score reports from tests taken within the valid period (as described above), you can upload them to your application in addition to requesting that your scores be sent.
  • At-home examinations are not accepted.

Some degree programs also require GRE Subject Tests. Visit your degree program page of interest for more information.

Can I report the best score in each subject/ category from different GREs?

No. You must list each test date separately in the application, and the official test score report for each reported test date must be sent to ETS code 3451.

Do you require a minimum GRE score?

Harvard Griffin GSAS does not state minimum, average, or required GRE scores, and not all Harvard Griffin GSAS programs require the GRE. To determine your degree program’s requirements, please refer to Degree Programs.

If my scores appear as verified in the Applicant Portal, does that mean they are valid?

Scores that appear as "Verified" in the Applicant Portal have been verified as official scores; however, scores must still be within the valid time range identified by Harvard Griffin GSAS.
