Animations & Interaction

The Leeds Beckett University website occasionally uses animations to page elements and animated gifs to add impact to pages. How do I turn off animations?

Chrome users will need to use browser extensions. Animation Policy from Google will help you set your own preferences.

Microsoft Edge

There is currently no way to disable animations within Microsoft Edge. Users of Edge (Chromium) browser can install the Chrome extensions above and use them.

Internet Explorer

To stop animations on a single page you can just press the 'Esc' key. This will stop the animation on that page. If you wish to restart the animations you need to refresh the page. To permanently disable the playing of animated GIF images, open Internet Options > Advanced tab. Under the Multimedia section, uncheck the Play animations in webpage check-box, click Apply and Exit and then restart your computer.

Type about:config in Firefox address bar and hit Enter to open Settings. Search for the image.animation_mode flag and change its value from Normal to None. Once you restart Firefox this will disable animations.

Top tips for writing your personal statement

Hi, I’m Hollie, a Sports and Exercise Therapy student at Leeds Beckett. In this blog I’m going to provide you with some useful tips for writing your personal statement.

The personal statement section of the UCAS application is an important part of the process. This is an opportunity for you to tell the universities all about yourself. Some of you may be sat staring at the screen thinking ‘How on earth do I write about myself?’ Don’t worry, I’ve been there. Highlighting all of your best points, skills and aspirations can be a tricky thing to do, but it’s not impossible and I am here to help you.

Before you write

Before you start tapping away at your computer or staring at a blank screen, here are a few things which could help you prepare and get you started:

  • Research the course. Before I started writing, I made sure I understood what the course involved and made a note of any modules that I was interested in
  • Know the commitment and skills needed for the course and maybe start thinking about the career you are hoping to go into afterwards
  • Note down your previous employment, work experience and education
  • Make a note of any skills you’ve gained or improved on during your past experiences
  • I found it useful to write out a draft and plan of what you want to put into each section before making a start on the actual piece. You can find an outline of the different sections of the personal statement on the university website .

Catch the reader's attention

You want your personal statement to stand out from the crowd. In my opinion, the introduction should start with something that will show them you are a little bit different and that will also show them your personality. The purpose of the introduction is to let the university know why you are excited about the course and to make them want to read more about you.

Why you want to study that course

In this section, it’s your opportunity to tell the university why you are applying for the course. When writing my application, I asked myself ‘What has made you want to apply for the course?’ I found that going straight in the with the ‘why’ at the beginning of the paragraph instantly made it clear to the university exactly what it was I wanted out of the course and my motivations for applying. Keeping your points concise and using simple short sentences throughout your personal statement is a good way to keep the reader engaged and ensure that your point doesn’t get lost.

Within this section I recommend explaining how the course fits in with your future aspirations and how the degree will allow you to pursue these dreams. I used the research I gathered about the course and modules to help explain why I was looking forward to certain aspects. This showed the university that I was already proactive, organised and passionate about the subject, which is a key part of being at university.

Past experiences and education

Next, it’s time to dive into your past education and work experience. This section is all about showcasing how they relate to the course and have inspired you to pursue your specific career path. This is a great way to show off what you have already done and skills you have already gained. Add in any past courses you have done, A levels or BTECS that may be related to the course, or extra courses you have completed outside of college. In my application I made reference to my BTEC and talked about what I had learnt and how this knowledge will be beneficial to certain modules on the course. I was also able to talk about why I enjoyed specific elements of my BTEC and how I was looking forward to learning more about the subject at university level.

After your education I recommend talking about any jobs or work experience you have already had. Now is a really good time to pick up on your skills and show them off. Think about things you may have worked on improving or new skills you have learnt? For example, has your time management improved? Do you have brilliant customer service? Are you good at working in a team? Are you easily able to adapt in situations and think fast? You could also talk about how these fit into the skills needed for the course you are applying for and how you feel they will help you succeed.

Hobbies and interests

It’s also a great idea to talk a bit about the things you enjoy and take interest in, outside of studying. This is where your personality really gets to shine. Do you play a sport? Do you like to write blog posts? Do you play a musical instrument? The list could go on and there are so many interesting things you can mention in this point. As well as showing the university what I’m about, I also used this section to show how my hobbies related to the course. I did this by talking about how I had written and worked with many health and fitness brands and so had experience in the industry. It’s important to show how proud you are of your own achievements.

What you want to achieve

I used the conclusion to show the university what I wanted to gain from the course. I asked myself, ‘Why is it worth your time?’ ‘What would you hopefully like to do after the course?’ By talking about the future, it shows that you’re already thinking ahead and know why it is you want to complete the degree.

Ask friends and family to read it

When you have finished writing it’s a good idea to ask a friend or family member to read through it for you. I found that a fresh pair of eyes can do wonders when you are sat there wondering if you have done enough or wondering what needs to be changed. Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family members to read it, read it and read it again until you are happy with the result. A second opinion and a few re writes can honestly help more than you realise!

Personal Statement Sports Science

From a young age, I have been fascinated by the science behind human movement and performance, and I am now eager to pursue this passion further by enrolling in a degree programme in sports science.

My academic background has prepared me well for the rigours of university-level study. I have excelled in science and mathematics courses, including biology, chemistry, physics, and calculus. In addition, I have taken several sports-related courses, such as physical education and sports psychology, which have given me a solid foundation in the principles of sports science. There are literally hundreds of gyms and fitness centers available to take care of health & beauty of expats in Moscow. The majority are extremely well-equipped, most including a swimming pool, extensive class schedule, open courts for many sports, and also saunas, beauty salons, and tanning facilities. Expect to pay about 28,000 – 62,000 RUR for an annual subscription (in cash, upfront).

These Moscow fitness centers provide information in English and may have some English-speaking staff:

There are three golf course in Moscow and the Moscow area:

Tennis Courts

Many fitness centers in Moscow offer facilities for playing tennis, as do the golf courses. But you can also try a specialized tennis club, or the facilities are the stadiums:

Swimming Pools

The great majority of fitness centers in Moscow also have swimming pools. But you can also easily find great pools and even waterparks without a gym membership.

  • Olympic Sports Complex This stadium has the best swimming pool in all of Moscow. Note that you must bring a medical certificate showing you are free of skin, and other, conditions that can be transmitted through the water (can be issued at any public clinic). Yoga Centers

There are numerous yoga centers in Moscow, and of course many fitness centers also offer yoga classes. The following yoga center has English-speaking instructors available:

Football (Soccer) Fields

Many fitness centers provide facilities for football, as do most stadiums (see Entertainment > Sports Events). You may also enjoy getting involved with the following expatriate football groups:

Ice Skating Rinks

Ice skating is very popular in Moscow. In the winter, there are open-air rinks all around the city and at Gorky Park. There are also numerous indoor rinks:

Skiing and Snowboarding Slopes

Besides these two slopes, Moscow offers a wealth of possibilities for cross-country skiing, especially in parks in the outskirts of the city including Sokolniki, Bitsevskiy Park, Kuzminki, Vorobievy Gory, and Yakhroma.

Horse Riding Facilities

There are many locations for horse riding in and around Moscow. The following two have English-speaking instructors available:

Russian soccer club says Norwegian player leaves after drone attack on Moscow neighborhood

OSLO, Norway (AP) — Russian soccer club Dynamo Moscow said Norwegian midfielder Mathias Normann terminated his contract with the team and left Russia after a drone strike on buildings near the neighborhood where he lived.

Normann was one of the few players from western Europe to play for a Russian club after the country’s military invasion of Ukraine started in February last year, a decision that saw him exiled from Norway’s national team.

Normann was contracted to Rostov when Russia started the war but was then on loan to Norwich in the English Premier League. He later returned to Russia to join Dynamo on loan.

FIFA passed interim rules after the war began allowing players from abroad who were then with clubs in those countries to suspend their contracts.

Dynamo chief executive Pavel Pivovarov told Sport Express in comments reported late Wednesday that Normann cited security reasons for terminating his contracts with the club and Rostov. The clubs will consider legal action, he said.

Skyscrapers in the central Moscow City neighborhood were damaged last week in drone attacks . Ukrainian authorities have not claimed responsibility for the operations.

The Norwegian soccer federation said last September it had agreed with national team coach Ståle Solbakken not to select Normann for international games. Normann played 12 times for the national team, alongside stars Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard.

At age ten I had been to 12 different countries, across 3 continents, getting a taste of a multiculturalism that would taint my life to the present day.

The experience of a nomadic upbringing It inspired analysis from a young age. It inspired the recurring questions “how?” and “why?”.

I’ve been involved in fitness training since I was a teenager when I moved to a town on the South African coast and beach culture beckoned me to the gym.

It didn’t take long before I was hooked. Fitness became a part of life from that day on and it felt great to find something so relaxing that I could spend my spare time doing.

At the time, I was involved in full-time volunteer work at a home for underprivileged children/AIDS patients. At a holiday home for children we provided environmental education, sports days and training while on alternate days I was also involved in English and art classes in the city infirmary.

I found that spending an early morning’s focused training before heading out to the clinic or the prison kept me alert and gave me more energy.

From 2002-06 I participated in humanitarian work predominantly in South Africa, and Mozambique as well as their neighbouring countries.

I also became quite involved with the NGO’s fund-raising programme and took a lead role in handling the PR and heading up sponsorship appeals as well as learning the Portuguese language (spoken in Mozambique).

As time passed and I continued with the volunteer work, I gained several humanitarian work related certificates before returning to the UK in 2006.

Spending 3 years in sales and advertising, both in South Africa and in the UK, I had valuable opportunities to create and strive for goals I had set for myself.

After 3 months at Aurora Media, I achieved top field sales personality. I loved the idea of getting continually looking for a better way, one that exceeds competition.

I was promoted to a management position where I was able to further develop my skills in communication as well as time-management and maintaining a ‘results-focused’ outlook. Though I learned a lot in my time there, I felt it wasn’t an industry within which I could reach my full potential.

Over the past few years, I have increasingly prioritized and put more of an emphasis on my personal fitness regime which meant delving into the science of it through extensive reading and research. Resultantly, I have been approached by friends, colleagues and friends of friends, who - over the past four years - I have delivered personalised training plans and sessions to.

This has helped to progress further my in-depth analysis of the human psyche and performance. Furthermore, to aid my development of structuring an individual’s fitness goals into achievable reality I took a course in Fitness Instructing.

The course built on my knowledge of physiology, while the work experience aspect provided valuable insight on working in the fitness industry.

After being privileged to have travelled as much of the world as I have and seen so much of humanity and how we work and operate in different cultures through different traditional, religious and socio-economic backgrounds I feel now be in a position where I am able to develop my acquired analysis in the field of sport specific psychology.

Combining what I’ve learned from the philosophies of meditation, tried and proven sales techniques, the very science of muscle, reading training manuals and my experience in training myself as well as others, the mind is the force behind our every action. I’m led to believe that the difference between success and failure is in the mind.

Tapping into it and regulating its control over our bodies is perhaps the most important task we as humanity can learn.

Applying this to athletes, it is beyond exciting to think of what can be accomplished when the mind is trained to precision along with the body. I want to be on the forefront of scientific research that combines record breaking physiological performance with psychological discipline.

Having been away from the academic scene for many years I’m aware that I have some catching up to do to get back up to scratch.

The curriculum I’ve been following on the Access to Sports Science course here at KCC is challenging at times but I’m certainly enjoying it. I feel that in this time away from education I have developed a real hunger for it.

Being back in the classroom now after many years, didn’t at all feel overwhelming, the way I thought it might. Instead it felt right, like it was where I was supposed to be all along.

In my spare time, I like to train (I’m currently focusing on cardiovascular ability with a view to run the 2011 London Marathon). My reading interests include books ranging from psychology to nutrition. I don’t follow any particular authors so much as the material they cover.

A book, constantly on the top of my pile is “Patrick Holford’s – The Optimum Nutrition Bible”, which gives incredible reference to healthy eating. I’m currently inching through “Richard Dawkins – The Blind Watchmaker”. But don’t quiz me just yet...
