In a world of high-speed living and remote jobs, earning money anywhere is possible. Travel isn’t cheap. It costs a lot of money, and working in an office does not leave much time for leisure. If you are on vacation and have seen all there is to be seen, you may look for something else to pass the time.

Remote jobs don’t have to be boring. In fact, many of them are great options for earning free or discounted travel. You just have to know how to choose which of these travel jobs is right for you.

1. Blogging

Blogging while traveling is a great way to earn some money. Your office is wherever your laptop is, so you are never tied down to one place. This can help you travel the world with just a laptop and a bit of data, which you can always find in local cafes or restaurants . It’s even better if you do travel writing, so you can combine firsthand experience with creative writing that helps others plan their travels.

2. Vlogging

Similar to blogging, video blogging, also called “ vlogging ,” is a visual form of content. You can write blogs for your website but also work as a freelancer for other people’s websites. When it comes to vlogging, however, people usually vlog for their own channels. It takes more time to succeed but can also be more rewarding monetarily. All you need is a smartphone with a nice camera, or if you want to be fancy, a laptop with some video editing software like Adobe PremierePro or DaVinci Resolve.

3. Video Commercials

This one is both fun and rewarding. If you have a smartphone with a decent camera and invest in an excellent DJI drone, you can earn some nice money on your travels. Combine this with an investment in a decent laptop and a video editing course, and you have a recipe for success. When I was on vacation in Corfu , I discovered an opportunity with their beautiful beachfront Tavernas. I packed my drone, visited a few of them on foot, and offered them my services. I scored two jobs for filming a video ad and one logo redesign job, which made me a nice profit for less than a full day of work.

4. Singing and Playing an Instrument

Singing or playing an instrument is another excellent way to earn some surprisingly good money. If you are a good singer and can play an instrument, you can always play in the city center or other popular spots. Many great talents have been discovered performing in public this way. You can also offer your skills to local restaurants or lounges if they are in need of live music or other entertainment.

5. Haircuts for Tips

If you know how to cut hair, another great way to earn money is to offer free haircuts and keep profits from their tips if they decide to give you one. You only need hair clippers for this one, so you can be flexible and earn well in countries where haircuts are expensive. Pro tip : You can combine this with vlogging and use this as your content on your vlog to increase exposure.

6. Exposure for Businesses

This travel job is for those with a well-developed online business. If you already have a travel blog , you can always ask restaurant owners, bar owners, hotels, and others who provide services in tourism if they would like to collaborate on a promotion on your website. The business will get exposure to your audience, and you can negotiate payment or exchanges for that promotion, like a one-night hotel stay or a free meal.

7. Bartending

A good barista is always a much-needed part of the crew. If you know how to mix drinks or make a killer espresso, you can always offer your services to nightclubs or cafes and earn a decent wage, plus tips.

8. Temporary Tattoos or Hair Styling

Unlike the classic tattoo industry, where laws and regulations can tie up employment approval, temporary tattoos can be done anytime, anywhere, and do not fall under any laws and regulations. Embry Riddle students train to guide airlines as demand for air traffic control surges

ORLANDO, Fla. — As the Federal Aviation Administration looks to fill thousands of Air Traffic Control vacancies – to reduce flight impacts – the agency is turning to schools like Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

Often working out of sight, air traffic controllers have direct and vast impacts on flights, and ultimately, if or when passengers make it to their destinations.

“Air traffic controllers are responsible for the safe, orderly, and expeditious flight of aircraft in the United States,” said Dr. Michael McCormick, Assistant Professor of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. “From the moment you leave your gate to the time you arrive at your gate; air traffic controllers are the hidden heroes, making sure you get there safely and on time.”

Dr. McCormick is a 33 year veteran of the FAA’s air traffic control service. He started his career working in a tower in Philadelphia, eventually becoming a Vice President within the organization. He now teaches and oversees Embry Riddle’s Air Traffic Control training program.

Most of the commercial planes in and out of Central Florida airports rely on an ATC center in Jacksonville to receive permission, or “clearance,” to fly in and out of the sunshine state. Various ATC centers, and controllers, direct pilots on routes to fly, altitude, speed and other factors.

“Jacksonville Center, on any one given shift, they’ll have about 120 controllers working,” Dr. McCormick said. “It’s a large air traffic control facility with many radar displays. The more radar displays that are being staffed and utilized, the easier the traffic flows and greater volume you can handle.”

By hiring more air traffic controllers in centers like Jacksonville, it means the ATC will be able to spread out the workload to have more controllers handling more flights, meaning fewer flight disruptions like cancelations and delays.

With airlines planning 27,000 daily flights in the U.S. this summer to meet record demand, they’re also looking to avoid mass cancelations and delays. Airlines say the FAA shares partial blame for these flight impacts, pointing to chronic staffing shortages at air traffic control towers.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told Spectrum News that air traffic control staffing issues have minimal impacts, citing weather, maintenance and flight schedules are more prevalent reasons for cancellations and delays, although saying the agency is making strides to fully staff air traffic control towers.

“What happens is there are certain scenarios where a tower or facility needs to make sure the airflow of traffic is limited so that it continues to be safe while you have those limited resources,” Buttigieg said. “Any time that happens, of course, the FAA is going to make sure it remains safe, but that can affect on-time performance. We just don’t want to see that happen.”

Buttigieg said the FAA hired 1,500 new air traffic controllers last year and are in the process of hiring another 1,800. President Biden recently signed a five-year FAA reauthorization bill that includes funding to hire another 2,000 air traffic controllers.

Training through the FAA academy can take 3 to 4 months, then another 1 to 5 years to become certified. The median annual salary for an air traffic controller is $137,000.

“This is one of the reasons why we’re taking the steps to increase the flow of air traffic controllers into the system,” Buttigieg said. “As you can imagine, you can’t just walk in off the street and be an air traffic controller. A huge amount of training goes into these safety critical positions. Over the last 10 or 20 years, we’ve seen the number of controllers really decline and we finally turned that around. On our watch, the number of controllers is growing, but America really needs to pick up the pace and we’re getting the resources for that.”

Among those resources are universities, like Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, who are pulling pressure off of the FAA’s training center in Oklahoma City.

“We have an outstanding facility in our Oklahoma City academy, we’re very proud of that, but we need to make sure we are adding capacity and augmenting that resource,” Secretary Buttigieg said. “We have phenomenal educational institutions around America. Embry Riddle is known nationwide, really worldwide, for its aviation program, so we are engaging these institutions through what’s called Controller Training Initiative.”

As part of the Enhanced Collegiate Training Initiative, Dr. McCormick said Embry Riddle students can graduate and go right into the FAA, bypassing the agency’s training academy, and go directly to an air traffic control field facility.

Alejandro Jarmillo, Antonio Moreno and Rachel St. Louis are among the students looking to become controllers soon.

“It’s a job with pressure, but it’s one of those things where you have to be passionate about aviation,” Jaramillo said.

The students operate multiple roles in a simulated air traffic control tower, guiding aircraft through a variety of scenarios.

“In the back of my mind, I’m always thinking these are real aircraft even though it’s on a simulator,” Antonio Moreno said. “The key is to never panic.”

It’s a rigorous program for the students who graduate with advanced skills to head right into the workforce.

US Screens Record 2.95 Million Airline Passengers in Single Day

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said it screened 2.95 million airline passengers on Friday, the highest number ever on a single day.

The record travel coincides with the Memorial Day weekend that marks the beginning of the U.S. summer travel season. Last week, a group representing major U.S. airlines forecast record summer travel with airlines expected to transport 271 million passengers, up 6.3% from last year.

The TSA said Friday's travel broke a record set in November of nearly 2.91 million air passengers screened. Five of the 10 busiest ever travel days have been since May 16, the agency said.

Airlines for America said U.S carriers plan to fly more than 26,000 daily flights this summer, up nearly 1,400 over 2023, or 5.6%, when they carried 255 million passengers. The summer travel season forecast is for June 1 to Aug. 31.

American Airlines said it will boost flights by 10% this summer expects 10% higher passengers over the May 23-May 28 Memorial Day travel period -- nearly 3.9 million passengers on 36,000 flights.

United Airlines is forecasting it will handle 3 million travelers during the Memorial Day travel period, up nearly 10% and its highest number ever during the period.

Delta Air Lines said it expects a 5% jump in Memorial Day weekend customers to nearly 3 million customers between May 23-27.

The forecast comes as the Federal Aviation Administration is struggling to address a persistent shortage of air traffic controllers. Some airlines voluntarily trimmed New York flights last summer to address congestion issues and have raised new concerns about the lack of controllers.

Airlines can lose their takeoff and landing slots at congested airports if they do not use them enough.

The FAA extended cuts to these minimum flight requirements at New York City-area airports through October because of staffing issues, and major airlines last month asked for those cuts to be extended through October 2025.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.
