Vellam Movie Review: Jayasurya, Samyuktha Menon shine in an uplifting, familiar film
Rating: ( 3 / 5).
In his previous film, Captain , director Prajesh Sen showed a man battling his inner demons and how his family is impacted by this. His second film, Vellam , has a man battling different demons. He goes through the severest of humiliation and becomes an embarrassment to not just his parents, wife, and kid, but also to himself. But this is a relatively more uplifting film.
Vellam is a classic redemption tale, based on a particularly dark phase in the life of a real-life person who makes an appearance towards the end of the film. Murali, played by Jayasurya, is found most of the time in an inebriated state. The epitome of the ultimate drunk, his habits have turned him into a stranger in his own home.
Director: Prajesh Sen
Cast: Jayasurya, Samyuktha Menon, Siddique
But the film never judges Murali, and I liked how it takes some time to show that there are people with far worse behaviour out there. Some of them get caught while others get a pass. It says that not all men with a bad habit are necessarily bad. It wants us to refrain from alienating someone who wants to change if given the necessary push. Murali desperately wants to change, but no one is willing to push him - not even his better half, played by Samyuktha Menon.
Vellam is a testament to Samyuktha's growth as an actor. She is not the same actor we saw in Theevandi . She plays a woman who has had enough and doesn't care what happens to her husband. She has lost all hope. But we also get the feeling that she might feel bad if something terrible does happen to him. What I liked, though, is how she never wallows in self-pity and doesn't take any s**t from Murali. If I remember correctly, there's only one scene where she sheds a tear. I wish Samyuktha had more to do in the film even though what she gets to do, with the limited amount of screentime she has, is quite impressive. I found her performance to be more natural and convincing than anything she had done before.
There is an authenticity to the dialogue delivery and the dialect used, and using sync sound was a wise choice. If you are from Kannur, you may find yourself smiling at moments when characters say cherunghane instead of cheruthayittu . Jayasurya is in peak form here. There are moments where Murali is not in a condition to express his thoughts with clarity or properly sign a paper. We also get a uniquely seriocomical situation where a suicide attempt is met with indifference, much to Murali's confusion. The scene that moved me most was when Murali tells a friend that he badly wants to reform, but can't bring himself to do so.
Vellam also tells us that it's unfair to ignore a reformed man - that his journey is incomplete if his loved ones continue to ignore him. I liked the intention and the film's central message - that it takes a village to raise a man. And the ever-reliable Siddique delivers yet another effective performance, as the man tasked with reforming Murali. He is like that teacher who is harsh and loveable at the same time.
But despite its numerous strengths, Vellam also has its speed-breaker moments. I wish this film didn't come with any songs or music. Remember that Vellam is coming to viewers who have already seen films such as The Great Indian Kitchen or Soorarai Pottru , which either used minimal music or used songs more efficiently. In multiple moments in Vellam , the music diluted some of the dramatic intensity. I was also not so fond of the 'mass' redemption climax. The skipped frame rates and slow-motion made it look like a clothing ad featuring Jayasurya. The sudden deviation from tone was so jarring.
I wish the film had put across some of its ideas more subtly. When the credits rolled, I couldn't shake off a strong feeling of familiarity. I didn't come away feeling as emotionally overwhelmed as I'd hoped.

Prajesh Sen’s fact-based drama. An alcoholic is left stuck by civilisation, pals and relatives until he effectively finishes his rehab. Will they consent him? In Malayalam with English subtitles.
The story concerns Murali (Jayasurya), a man finding it hard with heavy drinking, who goes through embarrassment and is thought to be a burden. After improving, he goes back home to find out that his family has located.
Jayasurya gives an excellent performance in his role as Murali, the alcoholic who is struggling and goes to rehab. But he is going to get a surprise once he is clean, but it makes you ask the important question – will his family accept him now he is a different person?
Elsewhere, there…

Kinda ruined it towards the end but do watch it for Jayasurya's perfomance.

Vellam is special solely by right of the problematized subject it fores as its protagonist; i have to say, Jayasurya as Murali makes for an extremely compelling, laudable performance - the best i have seen in recent times for real. there is a sense of a particular kind of subjectivity throughout, this personhood is annotated by a deadlock in destructive behaviour (beyond self-awareness), some corporeal urge or sensibility that overrides all human reason, and above all else, a context/situation within sociality that is almost certainly of a demeaning, dysfunctional, and ostracizing quality. under modernity, addicts and the mentally-ill have historically provided for such subjectivities, and i take some respite in their contemporary portrayals where their bodies and minds have been…
Review by Azhagu ★
Jayasurya's career best performance. He pulled it off very brilliantly but the screenplay is an absolute mediocre and towards the end the script itself buried the movie.
When you are writing a screenplay, one should concentrate on both cause and effect equally.
For example, here the writer is concentrating so much on addiction that he forgot his focus on de-addiction part which is essential and made this movie as stereotypical / formulaic / grammatical "inspirational flick".
Review by Jagat Antony ★★★
Someone please give Jayasurya a script worth his calibre. Absolute legend of a performer.
Review by Arun George ★★½
If there's one thing Vellam reinstates, it's that Jayasurya is a director's actor. He can carry an entire film on his shoulders provided there's scope for a knockout performance. As Murali, a perpetual drunkard with a knack for getting into messy situations wherever he goes, Jayasurya is spectacular. After a pretty impressive debut in Captain , writer-director Prajesh Sen offers the actor yet another character that's difficult to crack, but Jayasurya pulls off a convincing feat. However, Vellam's screenplay lacks the overall emotional pull for it to be a memorable cinematic experience.
We have already seen different kinds of alcoholics in Malayalam cinema - the funny kind, the harmless/helpless kind, and the brutal/sadistic kind. Murali, a former tile-shop worker, is quintessentially…

When he started his career with comedic films, I dismissed them without giving them much thought. But I firmly believe, that every actor is capable of delivering the goods if they choose good scripts and competent directors.Even though there are one song too many and the massy climax is not how I expected the film to come to an end,the message is simple but loud and clear. It helps that the film is buoyed by powerful turns by Jayasurya,Samyuktha Menon and Siddique.
Review by schneeland ★★★
Malayalam alcoholism drama with Jayasurya playing the protagonist Murali - and he is carrying the entire movie on his shoulders. It's far from perfect, as there is no real antagonist, even his wife Sunitha, played by Samyukhta Menon, has very little screentime and we don't get to know much about her.
On the other hand, it' s a relief that the film does not put the entire focus on the usual topics those films usually narrate, like violence and wifebeating for example. Still, it's much too long for its own good - 10 to 20 minutes could easily have been chopped away as quite a lot of scenes tend to dripple away into nothingness. Anyhow, VELLAM is quite watchable.

Vellam movie review: An essential drink indeed
Introduction
‘Vellam: The essential drink’ is a second directorial venture of Prajesh Sen starring Jayasurya and Samyuktha Menon in the lead roles. The movie is a biographical adaptation based on the life of a Keralite business person, Murali Kunumpurath. The movie is a journey of Murali from a complete alcoholic to an international business person along with a strong social message.
Murali is an ordinary tile worker with an alcoholic disorder because of which we failed in all aspects of his life. His family and society contempt him for the drunkard he has become.
After a series of heart-wrecking incidents in his life, he tries to snap out of alcoholism that made him lose everything he loved, and that will lead him to Dr. Subramaniyam. Despite breaking his faith, Dr. Subramaniyam gave him a second chance along with the support of Murali’s wife, Sunitha, who had left him.
Murali finally recovers from his alcoholism. But when everyone turned their back on him when he needed them the most, he tries to end his life. Dr. Subramaniyam, knowing this, advised everyone to lend their support to Murali for his recovery and Murali slowly began leading a normal life.
His past denied him of any work and that lead Murali to start a business which pushed him to come up with an interesting idea. Murali in end comes up with an idea that leads him to become the successful business person he is today.
I dismissed this movie for being unrealistically hopeful, but my jaw dropped when I realized that this is a biopic and Murali Kunnumel actually exists! It took me a second watch to dig out all the minor details which, when brought together, unraveled something special that left me in awe.
A movie that had everything going for it. Jayasurya has already proven himself to be a spellbinding actor, and his performance as Murali is one of his finest. Prajesh Sen’s direction is top-notch in Vellam. Engaging cinematography and heart-melting music added magic to the movie.
What I loved most is its attention to details, whether it was sprinkling the moments which spurred his final idea right from the start, or adding layers to the characters, or staying true to its objectives; even the little cameo by Murali Kunumpurath added a pleasant touch.
Vellam stretches our attention to the suffering caused by alcoholism to others and to the alcoholic, the humiliation that it brings to the family, neglections from society in the name of alcoholism. On a surface level, you can say the movie pointing out that Alcoholism is a medical disease that can be treated and that the recovering alcoholic needs support from everyone around. But deep down, the movie tries to challenge the stereotype we associate with alcoholics, where they are treated as less than human.
Prajesh sen’s movies have well-crafted strong female characters that have outshone the heroes for me, whether it was Anitha Sathyan from Captain or Sunitha from Vellam in this case. The character they have shown in tough times always grabbed my admiration and left a special place for them.
Something to look out for is that this movie uses up all of its time trying meticulously focus on the devastation that alcoholism can bring in and the cringing suffering on the way out of alcoholism, it was left with just two minutes out of this two-and-a-half-hour movie that makes the climax look like a half-baked over-night success. Also, how conveniently Murali was shown as perfectly healthy in the end despite a highly dysfunctional liver as stated by a doctor in the beginning.
Why I wasn’t bogged down by the very predictable climax was that I don’t think the movie is about the inevitable success that follows the tragedy that we are all used to, it’s about building the conviction that change is possible.
Finally, drawing up a verdict for this movie would be, if you can excuse the clichés of an inspirational movie and look close enough to actually see what this movie is about, you will be pleased by a brilliant one.

Anuraga Karikkin Vellam Malayalam Movie
As the final scene arrives, Khalid Rahman's 'Anuraga Karikkin Vellam' affirms that the stereotypes that it had chucked out of that door, will stay there for good. With no compromises and conciliations in sight, this remarkable directorial debut chooses to remain the heartfelt film that it really wants to be!
Abhi (Asif Ali) is an architect who isn't pretty much sure of what he wants to do with his life. He does know however that it is time to move on, and lets his girlfriend Elizabeth (Rajisha Vijayan) into the terrible news that he wants to break up. Elizabeth goes into an emotional fit and raves and rants, while Abhi remains unperturbed.
Back home, Abhi's dad Raghu (Biju Menon) runs into an old acquaintance Anuradha (Nandini) that sparks off a long lost romance in him yet again. As his coarse ways give way to refinement and warmth, his wife Suma (Asha Sarath) is surprised, but soon discovers much to her amusement that her husband has rediscovered an old muse!
The characterization in 'Anuraga Karikkin Vellam' is exemplary; thanks to a gently sharp-eyed script that doesn't let loose ends hanging around. there are innumerable witty little commentaries on contemporary life, that we are all so familiar with, and I could vouchsafe for the fact that there will be a couple of scenes in this film, that you have been a part of.
There are any number of scenes that I hold close to my heart in this uplifting film, and one such is the one which involves Suma who rushes out to the gate to see her husband and son off. As their bike turns around the corner, a neighbor's voice mutters that it's unacceptable that they never turned back to wave at her. It's enough; Suma retorts with a smile that she is there, with her gaze at the two men who matter most in her life.
What makes 'Anuraga Karikkin Vellam' unquestionably different is the suggestion that it makes with regard to the impact that a refurbished romance could have on your life. Raghu does not evolve into a disloyal husband as you almost expect him to be, and instead, walking through the tender showers of a revived love, emerges as an altered man who gets busy setting right all that had gone wrong with his life.
The three youngsters in the film - Abhi, Elizabeth and Sony - are as different from one another as chalk, cheese and charcoal, and avers that through love one discovers oneself. It takes a while for Abhi to comprehend what it is that he truly wants, while Elizabeth frantically tries to move mountains to ensure that the love of her life isn't lost. And there is the underdog of the lot, Sony who keeps hoping for the best, while all the while readying him for the worst, almost certain that his sort ends up losing the girl at the end.
There is a whole lot of subtlety that this film can boast of, and while at a glance it may seem like deviously simple love tale, it pretty soon becomes obvious that the cinematic archetypes are all kept at bay. The rewards that lie along the way are many, and it moves along eliciting plenty of grins and touching your heart in myriad ways.
It's surprising that this is a film sans any major drama or heavy conflicts and yet it is much more empathetic than any other movie that I have seen in recent times. And it works to its favor that it's small in scale and unassuming in its attitude, with its individual earnest moments making up for the shortages if any in dramatics.
The casting is again brilliant, and Biju Menon is like old wine, getting better with age and each film. Asha Sarath is flawlessly cast as well, and the two actors have a brilliant onscreen chemistry that makes the duo's performance exceptionally good. Asif Ali plays the puzzled youngster to perfection, while new find Rajisha Vijayan grabs the cake and the entire bakery and walks off with a smile on her lips, with a yahoo performance that simply stuns. Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi are downright efficient and the young actor who played Sony to precision deserves a huge pat on his back as well. Jimshi Khalid's cinematography is top notch and so is the lilting musical score by Prashanth Pillai.
'Anuraga Karikkin Vellam' is an engaging diversion from the sappy romantic tales that are often stuffed down our throats. It's an artfully crafted film that deserves all the applause that it can get, and is an intricately nuanced lesson on love, loss and life!

However, Vellam's screenplay lacks the overall emotional pull for it to be a memorable cinematic experience. We have already seen different kinds of alcoholics in Malayalam cinema - the funny kind, the harmless/helpless kind, and the brutal/sadistic kind.
Cast: Jayasurya, Samyuktha Menon, Siddique. In Vellam, Jayasurya plays Murali, a hopeless alcoholic who spends each sober moment looking for a drink or finding money for it. And his presence makes the film watchable. In the early parts of the film, he looks perpetually dazed and stumbles appropriately through his performance.
However, Vellam's screenplay lacks the overall emotional pull for it to be a memorable cinematic experience. Jan 24, 2021 By Sreejith Mullappilly. Writer-director Prajesh Sen's 'Vellam' tells the story of an alcohol addict, Murali played by Jayasurya. In every second of his life, Murali is thinking about when to have the next sip of liquor. This man is so addicted to alcohol that he would do pretty much anything for a drink.
Vellam Review: Jayasurya Starrer Shows There Is Nothing Romantic About Alcoholism. Vellam is a film and a performance that comes from a place of absolute fearlessness and integrity. The characterization in 'Anuraga Karikkin Vellam' is exemplary; thanks to a gently sharp-eyed script that doesn't let loose ends hanging around. there are innumerable witty little commentaries on contemporary life, that we are all so familiar with, and I could vouchsafe for the fact that there will be a couple of scenes in this film, that you ...
