7 Fun Activities For Teaching Word Problems That Actually Work!

Word problems are an important part of math instruction because they show students how they can use the math they are learning in the classroom in real life. A skill they will be using constantly throughout their life!

For this reason, I try to make learning this skill as fun as possible so that students will be engaged enough to really learn and understand the concept!

Here are some of my favorite tips for teaching word problems!

word problems

  • Use picture books – Model real-world problems using actual books. This is so easy to do with pretty much any picture book. All you need are pictures! While you’re reading, look for any changes with adding and subtracting in the pictures. For example: in Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, you can point out the adding one concept using the food. This is a good start for helping students understand that word problems have a beginning, change, and an end. For modeling subtraction, I found this book One Big Pair of Underwear. It’s hilarious! The kids really liked the funny pictures and obviously, anything with underwear captures their attention.

word problems

  • What do you know?
  • What do you need to solve?
  • How might you solve that?

This supports your little learners by helping “read” the world problem and it integrates with your listening and speaking standards.

  • Use rewards – Motivate your students to complete word problems. You can use this FREE Word Problem pack to do that. When students complete a word problem, they simply color, stamp, or place a counter over a space. When they’ve completed a certain amount, they earn a reward of their choice. For example, if a student completes five word problems, then the student can take their shoes off.

word problems

  • Making Movies – is another way I like to teach my students how to solve word problems. Have them close their eyes and visualize what is happening in the story. Is the information missing in the beginning, middle, or end of the story?

  • DIY Word Problems – Create your own math word problems. Have students roll dice to create their own math word problems. This helps engage them in learning and gets them to work independently. You can grab these by clicking here !

  • Get Hands-on -Use math manipulatives to model word problems. My favorite math manipulative is using an abacus. I model with one row the first part of the story. Then, I model the second part on the second row. Finally, I model the third part on the third row. Wherever the missing information is (beginning, middle, or end), we don’t model it, and this is where we show our answer. You can also use a tens frame with counters. This hands on manipulative organizes the information for kids to see and it’s an essential tool that will appear over and over again in K – 2.

  • Play Games – There are so many benefits to doing this. You can read about those here. You can get extra practice with word problems using these games. I’ve made sure to create a balance with word problems that have a missing beginning, missing middle, and a missing end. There are some with a change and some that compare.

These activities have always been a hit in my classroom. Making learning fun is such a simple and great way to increase student engagement and learning outcomes!

5 Fun Ways to Teach Word Problems & Engage Students

Problem-solving is vital for math success, which we can all foster in our students. For many, word problems seem intimidating. They cringe at the mere mention of story problems, feeling daunted by the challenge. But who says tackling word problems has to be mundane?

Today, I'm eager to introduce fun ways to teach word problems that will invigorate your math sessions. With these lively methods, you might turn some problem-solving skeptics into enthusiasts!

5+ Fun Ways to Teach Word Problems Your Students Will LOVE

These fun ways to teach word problems will transform the daunting realm of story problems into an engaging and delightful journey. Whether through a word problem scavenger hunt or by tapping into students' unique interests, these techniques ensure your learners grasp and excel in solving math problems.

You can easily adapt each activity to cater to the individual needs of your students, ensuring differentiation and personalization. For instance, if students grapple with a specific type of story problem, craft a game or activity that zooms in on that challenge. For those who lean towards visual learning, provide a set of illustrations for them to decipher.

1. Make a game out of it! Make word problem activities interactive.

Many students find problem-solving boring and tedious. Adding a gaming element to the mix can bring some excitement back for learners, and the great news is there are so many options for HOW you do this.

Here are two options that my students have loved:

Math Problem Solving Task Card Scavenger Hunt

Turn word problem task cards into a classroom scavenger hunt by posting them in secret locations around the room.

Add 3-4 answer choices on separate index cards under each task card. On the back of the card with the correct answer, give a clue to find the next task card.

If you're looking for a ready-made set of task cards to start with, here's a great option: Word Problem Task Cards

WORD PROBLEM TASK CARDS

Word Problem Escape Challenge

It can be hard to find word problem activities that cater to differentiation. However, this is a great way to scaffold story problems for struggling learners in a way that feels FUN.

Take your problems and break down the skills students will need to have. Each of these will become one step of the escape room, leading to the final step, where they'll be asked to solve a multi-step word problem to “escape.”

For example, pull all the computations students will eventually do for your problems. Use these to create a secret coded message. Students must solve the message to get to the next step. However, they won't know they've already practiced the math needed for the word problems!

Continue this progression by giving parts of problems and having them work up to problem-solving to escape.

2. Use unique manipulatives to help students visualize the story problem.

It's easy to get stuck in rote practice of the same problems. Instead, think outside the box! Use visuals and fun manipulatives that are not only engaging for students but also help them better understand the problem.

For example, when working on money problems, you can have students use money to model transactions or create a store to buy items and calculate change. However, this is just one option. I've found mini-erasers come in so many different shapes that I can often find examples to help my students better understand the problem. I recently used food-shaped mini-erasers to model a problem to find how many items could be purchased within a given budget. These manipulatives were much more fun and engaging, making it easy for my learner to see available alternatives. You can also find great holiday-themed miniatures at craft stores, like the cute mini gingerbread men you see below.

Winter Task Cards

3. Bring on the drama! Role-play math word problems.

Drama in the classroom may sound like a bad thing. Yet, in this case, it can be a great way to get students excited about math problem solving. Get creative and have students act out word problems by creating characters, setting a scene, and having them act out the problem.

Role-playing has many benefits for learners, including boosting engagement, motivation, and helping students see themselves as problem solvers.

5 Fun Engaging Math Word Problems 3 1 fun ways to teach word problems, fun math problem solving activities

For example, have them create a store scenario where they role-play, asking for change or using coupons. This can help students better visualize the problem. It also makes story problems easier for learners who need to see a story unfold before them.

4. Utilize cooperative learning strategies during word problem activities.

Working with a partner can make math problem-solving much more enjoyable for students. This is especially true if you use cooperative learning strategies to engage learners meaningfully. A few ideas include having students take turns solving parts of the problem, having them check each other's work and offer feedback, or having students create their word problems to present to the class.

Cooperative Learning Word Problems 1 fun ways to teach word problems, fun math problem solving activities

Using cooperative learning strategies allows students to practice problem-solving in a way that is more engaging and encourages collaboration. It also helps develop higher-order thinking skills, such as analyzing and critiquing, that are important for success in problem-solving.

5. Make word problems relevant to real-life.

Students often struggle with word problems because they can't connect with the scenarios. To make word problems more relevant and exciting to students, try incorporating your students' names, seasonal topics, or holidays into the problem. It will help them connect and tie the math to something real in their everyday lives.

Taking the time to craft word problems around what is happening in their lives makes mathematical mastery easier, more exciting, and enjoyable for everyone involved. It can also make them more willing to engage in the productive struggle required to become master problem solvers.

10 Fun and Original Ways to Teach Math Word Problems

by Sara Ipatenco

Solving word problems is a key life skill. Someday your students will need to know how to buy enough food for a party, figure out how much tile is necessary for a bathroom, double a recipe, determine the price of an item on sale, or calculate how many miles are left on a road trip. Word problems can be tricky, however, making it essential to teach your students multiple ways to solve these types of math equations. Once you have introduced the many ways to reach an answer, your students can choose the one that works best for them.

Here are ten fun ways to get your students excited about word problems!

1. Use manipulatives

Word problems math manipulatives

When students first start solving word problems, they need something concrete that they can touch and see. Math manipulatives are the perfect resource for this! Your students can use counters, cubes, blocks, coins, or even miniature erasers to create a visual representation of the math problem. For example, if your students have a problem that requires them to calculate the sum of two and four, they can make one pile of two items and a second pile of four items. Then they can count how many they have all together. This method also works well for subtraction.

2. Do a craft – often called a craftivity

Math problem craftivity

Kids love a good craft, and you can capitalize on that by breaking out the craft supplies during math time. Perhaps your students can solve an addition problem by gluing feathers to a turkey or divide a group of paper bones among paper dogs. Have your students count coins by allowing them to turn the coins into a picture first. Or solve a subtraction problem by ripping links off a paper chain.

3. Draw a picture

Drawing out word problems

Sometimes students need to see something to understand how it works. When solving math word problems, this is especially true. After your students read a word problem, challenge them to draw it. If the problem asks them to determine how many books are on two different shelves, students can draw the two shelves and the books on them and then count the pictures. If your students are trying to figure out how much money they have left after spending some, they can draw the original amount and cross out what they spent. Then they can count what’s left. Drawing a picture is also quite effective when students need to figure out the area or perimeter of a shape, or when they need to divide a group of objects equally.

4. Act it out

Math in real life

Instead of asking your students to simply figure out the answer, have them act out the problem. For example, say your students are trying to determine how to divide 12 pieces of candy equally among three children. Divide your students into groups of three and give them 12 pieces of candy to divide. If your students are trying to calculate how much ribbon they need to wrap 5 gifts, give them ribbon and 5 gifts and have them figure it out. To help students to find out how much it will cost to make dinner, give them the grocery ads so they can calculate the exact cost. Not only will your students have fun, but they will also remember how to do these types of problems in the future.

5. Go online

Math problems online

Children love the chance to play around on the computer or iPad. Use that to your advantage and assign your students some online word problems to solve. You can create your own word problem documents and have your students use the drawing tools to solve them, or you can use already-created word problem activities. Education.com offers a wealth of these types of activities, but there are numerous educational sites that will give your students word problem practice.

6. Take it outside

Outside math

Since students spend so much of their school time indoors, going outside is a novel way to encourage attentiveness to learning. Send students on nature hunts to solve addition problems to 10 by putting the kids in pairs having them find 10 rocks, pinecones, or sticks. Then students can rearrange their nature items to figure out different equations with a sum of 10. Practice division by having students separate groups of nature objects into equal groups of two, three, or four. Older students will enjoy measuring the area or perimeter of outside spaces and then adding them together. Students can also practice multiplication by making arrays with their nature objects.

7. Write a word problem

Instead of writing all the word problems yourself, why not have your students write their own word problems? Not only will it provide a more concrete understanding of the basic formulas of word problems, but it’s also an engaging way to do something new in math. Younger children can practice writing their own problems by filling in the blanks on word problem templates, and older students can come up with their own problems on their own. Once all the problems are written, students can switch and solve each others’.

8. Use your students’ names

Use students' names

Students love to hear their own names – particularly in the context of reading and math. Build interest in your word problems by writing them to include the names of your students. Invite each student to solve the word problem that includes their name and then share the answers with their classmates. This is also a great way to differentiate your math instruction to ensure that all students get the practice they need at the level their current level of performance.

9. Ask the students to be the teachers

word problem solving activity

Instead of always being the one standing in the front of the room showing students how to solve math word problems, have the kids do it instead. Children tend to remember more of what they learn when they teach it to someone else. Invite students to take turns coming to the front of the room and demonstrating how to solve a word problem in the way that makes the most sense to them.

10. Make word problems silly

word problem solving activity

There’s nothing kids like more than being allowed to be silly in the classroom. Let your students be silly while also solving math word problems. You can write the word problems yourself or encourage the students to come with silly problems as a class. Perhaps the teacher ate 26 cupcakes for breakfast and 56 cupcakes for lunch and needs to know how many cupcakes she ate in all. The story problems can also encompass other things you’re teaching, such as weather, maps, and music. Even older kids can get in the silly action with word problems about emojis, sports, and other things that matter to them.

It’s tricky to get all students on board to love and enjoy solving math word problems, but with these ideas your class will may just start looking forward to them! You’ll love seeing students enjoy solving problems while also boosting their math abilities and test scores.

Free Word Problems for Math Intervention Activities

Is it a challenge for your students to break down word problems? Do they struggle with identifying the operation, solving the problem, justifying their answer, or all of the above? This can definitely be a challenge for your students and you when this happens (and it seems to happen every year). This post will share some strategies for teaching word problems and a set of free word problems that are perfect for math intervention activities and remediation.

Do your students struggle with word problems? Grab free intervention word problems for grades 3-5 on this post!

Strategies for Word Problem Math Intervention

Here are some of the strategies and activities that I use to support my students with word problems:

  • Introduce new math problems with a context in the form of a relatable word problem
  • Expose my students to a variety of word problems regularly and consistently > The free set of word problems will help with this.
  • Model my thinking when reading and solving word problems
  • Provide my students with a step-by-step way to work through understanding and solving a word problem > T he free set of word problems will help with this.
  • Get hands-on…use hands-on sorts and moveable digital activities to have my students interact with word problems > The free set of word problems will help with this.
  • Teach situations and contexts and not key words when it comes to determining the operation needed. Click here to read a post about using situations and not relying on key words to solve word problems.
  • Allow for opportunities for students to share and discuss word problem solving strategies

Now, let’s take a look at the free set of word problems that will give you some free math intervention activities to help your students master word problems.

About the Free Word Problems

This set of free word problems includes two different math intervention activities that focus on word problems.

  • The first set of word problems help students conquer word problems by helping them break down the problem and organize their plan for solving.
  • The second set of word problems is a sort where students sort word problems according to the operation needed to solve them.

The free word problems focus on basic multiplication and division math facts.

This will allow you to focus on teaching your students the strategy of breaking down a word problem (with the help of a graphic organizer) without being bogged down by difficult math concepts.

Math Intervention Word Problems – Graphic Organizer Activity

The first set of word problems includes 10 multiplication and division word problems with a graphic organizer. The organizer helps students break down the steps of solving the word problem.

The graphic organizer for each problem asks the students to:

  • Retell the problem
  • Select the operation and reason for selecting that operation
  • Solve the problem
  • Defend why the answer makes sense
  • Prove the answer

I have also included the word problems in a copy friendly version with 8 word problems on a page and blank templates of the graphic organizer. You can use laminated copies of the blank template and have students write on them with dry erase markers. This makes it super easy to use during stations and guided math groups.

Note: It can be time-consuming to complete all parts of the graphic organizer each time if used regularly. Feel free to have students only complete specific sections as needed. You could even start with just having them retell the problem, select the operation, and then solve the problem. Then you can move to the other sections later on. Alternatively, you can skip the retelling and focus on the defending and proving sections.

Math Intervention Word Problems – Sort Activity

Word problems are a difficult math skill to make hands-on but anytime I can make something hands-on, the better my students do.

The second set of word problems included in this free resource are for a sort activity where the students sort six word problems by operation (multiplication or division).

You can use this to focus just on understanding the problems and determining the operation or you can take it a step further and have the students solve the problems after sorting.

Do your students struggle with word problems? Grab free intervention word problems for grades 3-5 on this post!

Digital Versions

If you want to assign this as a digital math activity, both sets of word problems (the 10 graphic organizer word problems and the word problem sorts) are included in digital format on Google Slides.

For the graphic organizer word problems, students will complete their responses in the provided text boxes on each slide and then drag and drop the operation needed to solve the problem.

Free intervention word problems for grades 3-5! Use these printable AND digital word problems to help your students find success with word problems.

Do your students dread word problems?

Lots of children love math because it’s all about numbers, right? So when we throw lots of words at them, they’re like “whoa whoa whoa, this is not math, this is reading!”

how to solve word problems and make word problems fun

Don’t throw in the towel just yet, though. We know our students need consistent word problem practice. Solving word problems is an important life skill, so as their teachers, we need to come through and keep giving our students multiple opportunities to solve these pesky word problems.

But it doesn’t have to be boring, stressful or dreadful! I promise.

Here’s a fun activity that’ll actually get your students excited about solving word problems and dare I say it…make word problems fun.

Okay let’s dig into this blog post so I can show you one of the ways I make word problems fun and engaging for students.

Fun Word Problems for 2nd Graders, 3rd Graders, and 4th Graders with this Activity

With this word problems activity, we’re going to combine fun + cute + rigor.

All students, regardless of grade level, deserve to have fun during school so let’s not take that away. When I taught 4th grade, the level of joy and excitement I saw when they got to do any sort of crafts was so sweet. Yes, they’re big kids, but big kids are still kids. And all kids deserve to do fun things in school. I realize that’s my opinion but I’m sticking to it because I’ve seen the positive impact fun activities can have on student learning and their willingness to learn! 🙂

I understand the stress we feel from state tests and the pressure to GO GO GO, but it’s okay to pause, take a break from the normal routine, and interject some fun crafts into math time.

First: Students Solve the Six Word Problems.

First, you’ll give the the word problems sheet along with the craft sheet.

Students will start by solving the six word problems . I feel this is the perfect amount of word problems to complete during a math rotation or during whole group math time (some teachers like to do this on Fridays). In the pictures below, you’ll see that students will be building a snowman.

Students can also Build a…

In other sets, students can build a love monster for some Valentine’s Day math , a turkey during Thanksgiving time , a holiday sweater during December, just to name a few.

how to solve word problems and make word problems fun

Second: Students Find the Correct Answer

As students have solved the word problems, they’ll check the craft sheet to see if their answer is on a particular piece. This allows the students to self-correct, which I think is so valuable in a child’s learning. If they don’t see the answer, this tells the student they need to check their work and solve again.

In the picture below you’ll see that the correct answers were circled.

Here’s another example where you’ll see the student coloring the correct answer.

For example, word problem #4 matches the sweater (answer 388).

Third: Students Begin Coloring and Cutting the Pieces

Now let’s get to the fun part. Students get to color and cut the pieces in order to begin the building process! This keeps the engagement and focus high.

Fourth: Students Get to Build and Glue to Create their Final Product

Let the glueing and building begin. Students will now get to glue and put together their snowman (or whichever word problem craft they’re working on-you can see the different craft options here).

More Examples of the Finished Word Problem Crafts:

Take a look at the finished holiday sweater from the December set and the Leprechaun that’s perfect for March to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day .

How CUTE are these, though?! So fun, right?

Solving Word Problems can be Fun!

See, solving word problems doesn’t have to be boring. Sometimes we just need different ways to spice it up a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I do implement a daily word problem prompt in my classroom, where students glue the math problem strips into their journals, show their work, solve, etc. You can find 2nd grade word problems here and 3rd grade word problems here .

But, sometimes it’s nice to switch it up and break from the normal routine.

How to easily make your own math word problems & word problems worksheets

Two teachers are discussing math with a pen and a notebook

Armed with 120 examples to spark ideas, making your own math word problems can engage your students and ensure alignment with lessons. Do:

  • Link to Student Interests:  By framing your word problems with student interests, you’ll likely grab attention. For example, if most of your class loves American football, a measurement problem could involve the throwing distance of a famous quarterback.
  • Make Questions Topical:  Writing a word problem that reflects current events or issues can engage students by giving them a clear, tangible way to apply their knowledge.
  • Include Student Names:  Naming a question’s characters after your students is an easy way make subject matter relatable, helping them work through the problem.
  • Be Explicit:  Repeating keywords distills the question, helping students focus on the core problem.
  • Test Reading Comprehension:  Flowery word choice and long sentences can hide a question’s key elements. Instead, use concise phrasing and grade-level vocabulary.
  • Focus on Similar Interests:  Framing too many questions with related interests -- such as football and basketball -- can alienate or disengage some students.
  • Feature Red Herrings:  Including unnecessary information introduces another problem-solving element, overwhelming many elementary students.

A key to differentiated instruction , word problems that students can relate to and contextualize will capture interest more than generic and abstract ones.

14 Effective Ways to Help Your Students Conquer Math Word Problems

If a train leaving Minneapolis is traveling at 87 miles an hour…

Word Problems WeAreTeachers

Word problems can be tricky for a lot of students, but they’re incredibly important to master. After all, in the real world, most math is in the form of word problems. “If one gallon of paint covers 400 square feet, and my wall measures 34 feet by 8 feet, how many gallons do I need?” “This sweater costs $135, but it’s on sale for 35% off. So how much is that?” Here are the best teacher-tested ideas for helping kids get a handle on these problems.

1. Solve word problems regularly

word problem solving activity

This might be the most important tip of all. Word problems should be part of everyday math practice, especially for older kids. Whenever possible, use word problems every time you teach a new math skill. Even better: give students a daily word problem to solve so they’ll get comfortable with the process.

2. Teach problem-solving routines

Word Problems Teacher Trap

There are a LOT of strategies out there for teaching kids how to solve word problems (keep reading to see some terrific examples). The important thing to remember is that what works for one student may not work for another. So introduce a basic routine like Plan-Solve-Check that every kid can use every time. You can expand on the Plan and Solve steps in a variety of ways, but this basic 3-step process ensures kids slow down and take their time.

3. Visualize or model the problem

word problem solving activity

Encourage students to think of word problems as an actual story or scenario. Try acting the problem out if possible, and draw pictures, diagrams, or models. Learn more about this method and get free printable templates at the link.

4. Make sure they identify the actual question

word problem solving activity

Educator Robert Kaplinsky asked 32 eighth grade students to answer this nonsensical word problem. Only 25% of them realized they didn’t have the right information to answer the actual question; the other 75% gave a variety of numerical answers that involved adding, subtracting, or dividing the two numbers. That tells us kids really need to be trained to identify the actual question being asked before they proceed.

5. Remove the numbers

word problem solving activity

It seems counterintuitive … math without numbers? But this word problem strategy really forces kids to slow down and examine the problem itself, without focusing on numbers at first. If the numbers were removed from the sheep/shepherd problem above, students would have no choice but to slow down and read more carefully, rather than plowing ahead without thinking.

6. Try the CUBES method

word problem solving activity

This is a tried-and-true method for teaching word problems, and it’s really effective for kids who are prone to working too fast and missing details. By taking the time to circle, box, and underline important information, students are more likely to find the correct answer to the question actually being asked.

7. Show word problems the LOVE

Word Problems Jennifer Findlay

Here’s another fun acronym for tackling word problems: LOVE. Using this method, kids Label numbers and other key info, then explain Our thinking by writing the equation as a sentence. They use Visuals or models to help plan and list any and all Equations they’ll use.

8. Consider teaching word problem key words

word problem solving activity

This is one of those methods that some teachers love and others hate. Those who like it feel it offers kids a simple tool for making sense of words and how they relate to math. Others feel it’s outdated, and prefer to teach word problems using context and situations instead (see below). You might just consider this one more trick to keep in your toolbox for students who need it.

9. Determine the operation for the situation

word problem solving activity

Instead of (or in addition to) key words, have kids really analyze the situation presented to determine the right operation(s) to use. Some key words, like “total,” can be pretty vague. It’s worth taking the time to dig deeper into what the problem is really asking. Get a free printable chart and learn how to use this method at the link.

10. Differentiate word problems to build skills

word problem solving activity

Sometimes students get so distracted by numbers that look big or scary that they give up right off the bat. For those cases, try working your way up to the skill at hand. For instance, instead of jumping right to subtracting 4 digit numbers, make the numbers smaller to start. Each successive problem can be a little more difficult, but kids will see they can use the same method regardless of the numbers themselves.

11. Ensure they can justify their answers

word problem solving activity

One of the quickest ways to find mistakes is to look closely at your answer and ensure it makes sense. If students can explain how they came to their conclusion, they’re much more likely to get the answer right. That’s why teachers have been asking students to “show their work” for decades now.

12. Write the answer in a sentence

word problem solving activity

When you think about it, this one makes so much sense. Word problems are presented in complete sentences, so the answers should be too. This helps students make certain they’re actually answering the question being asked… part of justifying their answer.

13. Add rigor to your word problems

word problem solving activity

A smart way to help kids conquer word problems is to, well… give them better problems to conquer. A rich math word problem is accessible and feels real to students, like something that matters. It should allow for different ways to solve it and be open for discussion. A series of problems should be varied, using different operations and situations when possible, and even include multiple steps. Visit both of the links below for excellent tips on adding rigor to your math word problems.

14. Use a problem-solving rounds activity.

Word Problems Teacher Trap 3

Put all those word problem strategies and skills together with this whole-class activity. Start by reading the problem as a group and sharing important information. Then, have students work with a partner to plan how they’ll solve it. In round three, kids use those plans to solve the problem individually. Finally, they share their answer and methods with their partner and the class. Be sure to recognize and respect all problem-solving strategies that lead to the correct answer.

Math Word Problems

Welcome to the math word problems worksheets page at Math-Drills.com! On this page, you will find Math word and story problems worksheets with single- and multi-step solutions on a variety of math topics including addition, multiplication, subtraction, division and other math topics. It is usually a good idea to ensure students already have a strategy or two in place to complete the math operations involved in a particular question. For example, students may need a way to figure out what 7 × 8 is or have previously memorized the answer before you give them a word problem that involves finding the answer to 7 × 8.

There are a number of strategies used in solving math word problems; if you don't have a favorite, try the Math-Drills.com problem-solving strategy:

  • Question : Understand what the question is asking. What operation or operations do you need to use to solve this question? Ask for help to understand the question if you can't do it on your own.
  • Estimate : Use an estimation strategy, so you can check your answer for reasonableness in the evaluate step. Try underestimating and overestimating, so you know what range the answer is supposed to be in. Be flexible in rounding numbers if it will make your estimate easier.
  • Strategize : Choose a strategy to solve the problem. Will you use mental math, manipulatives, or pencil and paper? Use a strategy that works for you. Save the calculator until the evaluate stage.
  • Calculate : Use your strategy to solve the problem.
  • Evaluate : Compare your answer to your estimate. If you under and overestimated, is the answer in the correct range. If you rounded up or down, does the answer make sense (e.g. is it a little less or a little more than the estimate). Also check with a calculator.

Teaching Methods for Solving Word Problems

This teacher professional development course will teach you about the challenges students often encounter when solving word problems and present varied solutions for teaching problem-solving skills to your students. You will be provided with a detailed plan for teaching two different problem-solving strategies in your classroom, depending on your students' needs: the GUESS method and the CUBES method for word problems. The course also comes with a downloadable PDF of the course content, graphic organizers, and supporting student resources.

  • The video and article will provide you with two specific methods for solving word problems and ideas for teaching your students these skills. You will learn about common strategies required for solving word problems and challenges that arise so you can help correct and support your students. The course also includes some “Reflect or Discuss” prompts to help you connect with the course content and ends with a “Try This Task” to guide you explicitly on how you might implement the ideas into the classroom.
  • You will answer questions related to strategies for solving word problems. Quizzes are automatically scored and provide feedback on answer choice rationale.
  • The reflection prompt requires you to plan for use of the “try this task” by either reflecting on the content yourself or discussing them with the colleague. You will then discuss a new concept you can attempt to implement in the future based on something you learned in the course.
  • This short statement helps you reflect on your ideas and assess whether you might be successful in your implementation.
  • Additional content suggestions are provided to enhance and expand your understanding of supporting students in word probably analysis.

  • Solar Eclipse 2024

See the 2024 Solar Eclipse’s Path of Totality

A total solar eclipse is expected to pass through the United States on April 8, 2024, giving stargazers across the country the opportunity to view the celestial phenomenon in which the sun is completely covered by the moon.

The eclipse will enter the U.S. in Texas and exit in Maine. It is the last time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the contiguous United States until 2044.

Here's what to know about the path of the eclipse and where you can see it.

Where can you see the total solar eclipse?

The eclipse will cross through North America, passing over parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The eclipse will enter the United States in Texas, and travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Much of the eclipse's visibility depends on the weather. A cloudy day could prevent visitors from seeing the spectacle altogether.

The solar eclipse will begin in Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT. It will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

The longest duration of totality—which is when the moon completely covers the sun — will be 4 minutes, 28 seconds, near Torreón, Mexico. Most places along the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes.
