The prize giving ceremony is an exciting day of joy and happiness, to the students. On this day prizes are given to the students for the best performances both for academic and for co-curricular activities. It was the end of our First Terminal Exam when the annual prize giving ceremony of our school was held. We had been waiting for this day eagerly. So, it created great enthusiasm among the students. It was the month of May and all of us took active part in the month long programme of the annual sports and cultural functions. A big rostrum was built in front of our school building. The rostrum was beautifully covered with cloth. A nice gate was built at the entrance. the way leading to the rostrum was decorated with flowers and festoons. Sitting arrangements was made in front of the rostrum. Before the beginning of the main programme, the headmaster, the chief guest, the teachers, the guardians and other invited guests took their respective seats. The honourable Minister of Education was the chief guest at the function. The Headmaster of our school presided over the ceremony. The function started at about 11:00 a.m. The chief guest gave a speech which was very valuable for all of us. Then the prize giving ceremony began, I won three prizes; one for recitation, one for debating and the other for high jump. I got two books and a beautiful pen as prizes. after the function I felt elated because I had never won so many prizes at any function. It was a memorable day for me. It inspired me to work hard to attain success in sports and academic activities. I will never forget the last annual prize giving day of our school.

Ratul, Abir, Arnab, Sneha sang good songs. Chorus songs were also sung by a group of girls students. A one-act play was staged by the boys. It was highly praised by the audience. Then the President delivered his valuable speech. He asked the students to be dutiful to society and gave emphasis on their behaviour. At last, the President gave away the prizes to the deserving students. On that day the sports prizes were also given. The headmaster thanked all the guests and guardians who were present there. Thus the prize-giving ceremony came to an end with a closing chorus song.

The prize giving ceremony is an exciting day of joy and happiness, to the students. On this day prizes are given to the students for the best performances both for academic and for co-curricular activities. The last prize giving ceremony of our school was held on the 23rd January 2020. It was held in the school auditorium. The auditorium was beautifully decorated with colorful papers and festoon. A gate was erected nicely to welcome the chief guest and other honorable guests. The Director General of Secondary and Higher Education, Dhaka, was the chief guest of function. When the chief guest arrived, the headmaster and other teachers received him at the gate. The scouts of the school gave him a guard of honor. Our headmaster presided over the function. It was 3 pm when the function began with the recitation from the Holy Quran. Two little girls then garlanded the chief guest and the president. The headmaster then read out the annual report of the school. He gave an account of the progress made during the year. He also spoke about many problems of the school with an earnest request to the govt. to come forward in solving them. After the headmaster’s report, the prize giving ceremony began. The assistant headmaster of our school called the names of the prize winners and the chief guest gave away the prizes. The distribution of prizes came to an end in an hour. After the distribution of the prizes the chief guest delivered an important and instructive speech to the students. He advised them to be very attentive to their studies and keep themselves away from politics and other undesirable activities. He advised them to build up their character to become good citizens of the country to discharge the responsibilities entrusted upon them. Finally, the assistant headmaster of the school gave a vote of thanks to all who attended the function and to others who worked hard for the success of the function. The function came to an end with a variety show performed by the students of the school.

College Head’s 2020 Prizegiving Speech

A few weeks ago, at our Senior School Prizegiving Ceremony , Dr Colleen Vassiliou gave a speech as Head of the College. This year has been a very different year not only for our school, but indeed our country and the world at large. The recurring message throughout her speech was that we should look at how we have all managed to adapt to this year and that we really and truly are the heroes of our own story.

Good afternoon Chair of Council, Mr Warrick Strachan,  our guest of honour, Mrs Diana Hornby and her husband Pat, president of the Old Kingswoodian Club, Mr Colin Stirk, members of the College Council, Heads of the School, our Business Manager, Staff, Parents, and Pupils. I greet all my fellow Kingswoodians and say welcome to our 2020 prize giving ceremony, an unusual one and a first of its kind.  Whoever thought our prize giving would be part virtual. 

We would all agree that covid brought with it contrast and paradox.  In my opening speech to all the new comers on 13 January, I started off by saying.  ‘ We have coined 2020 as the year of plenty’ – little did we know what was about to unfold.  If on new pupils day you told me that a pandemic would escalate to the point of schools having to close, I would have thought you were referring to a futuristic sci-fi movie.  And then it happened – 19 March – President Ramaphosa gave us a few days to get our pupils home.  Initially we were delighted about the timing and a short term lockdown fell perfectly within our first term holiday and then, the one month lockdown escalated into an unending season and the reimagining of a school began to unfold.

At first we would all agree that the lockdown gave us time to reflect – a word that stands out to me this year – is the word HERO.

In March we began serious deliberations and planning to get our E-learning process up and running. 

Consideration had to be given to the complexities around remote learning; live lessons versus recorded lessons; google meet, versus teams and zoom; parent’s involvement versus pupil responsibility; getting the balance right without burdening the pupil.

 The main message was quality was more important than quantity.  For the senior school teachers, it was important to constantly obtain feedback so you could be aware of what worked or didn’t work and whether the pupils were comfortable with the pace, quantity and expectations.  The message was also given to teachers to be creative, play and try new things. 

What we were sure of was that we wanted a product that would make the pupils not only ‘love’ learning but that it would be professional enough so that the pupils would be excited to engage in this new way of teaching and learning. 

The remote learning model was a time to think out of the box and the teachers rose to the occasion. They are to be applauded, each and every one of them, to us they were our frontline workers of this Covid-19 pandemic.

Financial decisions had to be made too as we realised that Covid 19 would bring not only health and education challenges but significant financial challenges too.  As a family school we decided to take a huge risk in this regard.  Parents were immensely grateful for the boarding fee respite as the economic effect of the lockdown affected many of our families.  And this is where our Kingswood family stepped up.  Without the assistance of generous donations, we would not have been able to push through these financially hard times.   Thank you to each and every one of the exemplary Old Kingswoodians who assisted us.

On Tuesday 19 May, the Minister of Education announced that Grade 12 and Grade 7 pupils could return to school.  We were delighted.  ISASA confirmed that other grades could be brought back at the same time and boarding could resume under strict health protocols.  It was decided was decided that the online learning process had to remain the school’s backbone.

Permission had to be granted by the Department of Health and Education and the opening of school was not plain sailing.  Some staff had declared co-morbidities.  Other staff were struggling with being unable to return due to child-care issues.  And families had concerns about the virus.  The opening of school was complex.  We knew we needed to navigate this and we did.

In line with the guidelines, we stuck to basic guiding principles: 

  • Sanatize hands;
  • Social distancing; and
  • Wear masks at all times. 

To get a school up and running remotely is a mammoth task – to get a school Covid compliant just as big – to make it through a pandemic – can only be TEAM work.

I wish to thank Ms van Molendorff and Mr Wright and the Senior school staff for the exemplary role they played in ensuring the remote learning product that unfolded was valued by all.  I wish to thank our medical staff and all support staff who went beyond their duty to ensure our pupils were cared for. I wish to thank the parents for supporting us during this time, but most of all I wish to thank the pupils. 

You showed such grit, such resilience and such character.  We are so proud of you. 

You are part of history, even a global pandemic couldn’t stop you and here you sit, ready to receive your award – after hard work and deep commitment – well done!

The Covid-19 pandemic blind-sided not only us but the entire world.  What we have seen though is plenty consolidation from a finance point of view, plenty of care from our teachers, plenty of courage from our pupils, plenty of consideration from the leadership team, plenty of compassion from our community and kindness from our staff and massive amounts of constant information about the Coronavirus. 

As we moved through the various levels, we finally arrived at the start of our third term and Level 1.  Pupils embraced being back in the class with such appreciation.  They arrived back at school with their souls filled.  They handled the covid-19 regulations so well.  And as pupils attended classes and were able to physically extend themselves outdoors, attend house dinners, the pupils began to revel in what they had missed and what school life is all about.  A highlight for me was our Heritage day celebration where the school came alive on City Lords, expressing their appreciation for being African, joining in the Jerusalema and singing our Anthem with pride.  To witness our children being children.  Another highlight was our OK Tie Ceremony where the OK Club awarded our school Dr, Dr Fred Oosthuizen with the highest award bestowed by the Old Kingswoodian Club: The Honorary Vice-President Award. 

Often our children are exposed to so much and as much as this is necessary it is emotionally draining for them.  Our matric pupils experienced disenfranchised grief this year, a loss of so much that they should have experienced.  We applaud our matric pupils for pushing through the loss – for applying themselves and we wish them well as they head into their matric final examinations. 

Pupils are faced daily with many transformation conversations. The situation that unfolded in America, and racist incidences that continue to permeate our South African context, pupils are emotionally drained, disillusioned and overwhelmed. 

Conversations are courageous, but often takes its toll on our pupils emotional well-being.  Our Pupil Leadership team, are to be commended this year for successes regarding the representation of pupils on council sub-committees. 

The development of a Transformation working document, and policy and the appointment of a Transformation Officer has propelled us significantly forward on our transformation journey. 

Yes, we have a lot of work still to do, but we will strive to make this a place where everyone feels they belong.  We are also partnering tomorrow with the Uyinene Foundation, workshopping our role in addressing gender based violence. 

To reiterate our school’s definition of transformation:

“…A conscious journey that starts with the self so that the Kingswood College family builds and shapes a holistic, diverse, representative, inclusive and courageous community within the values of the school resulting in a sense of belonging…”

We are excited to be on this journey, as we prepare out pupils to be a transforming influence in society.

We have some phenomenal individuals retiring at the end of the year.

Mr Steve Gardner our Business Manager was appointed in 2004 as Bursar.  In 2008 his title was changed to Business Manager as he offered valuable expertise far beyond the ambit of a bursar.  Mr Gardner’s passion lay in capital development projects which included Kirkby House construction, City Lords Project, Hugh Stocks swimming complex,  Cohen teaching block, HPC, Heads residence in Francis street, Jagger House assistants flat, and Hobson House.  Bursars are never popular as their favourite answer is NO but Steve’s magic permeates so much of this school and he is loved and respected by all.  We wish you well Mr Gardner – we wish you Health and happiness as you head into the next chapter of your journey.

Ms Elmarie Retief joined Kingswood in 1993.  She has served as a Personal Assistant to six College Heads.  She deserves a medal for this.  From Council minutes to administrative roles, managing diaries and executing HR functions.  She has taught a class here and there and ran enrichment activities.  She is the glue that keeps Kingswood together.  Enrolment processes, academic administration, logistics, boarding matters, pupil discipline, reception, public relations, secretary to staff the list goes on and on and on.  She has seen many changes in Education and written policies and protocols adapting to the various changes.  She not only served as College PA but Secretary to the Chairman of Council.  Elmarie is a friend to all.  A confidant, an inspiration.  A strong woman of integrity with a deep love for Kingswood.  We wish you well El as you go walk barefoot in the sand on the beaches of Jeffreys Bay. 

I mentioned Jill Long and Vivienne van der Merwe at the Junior School Prize Giving this morning.  They also retire this year.  We recalled how we grieved the loss of our beloved Marian van Aardt, who passed away a few months ago.  A big void was left when Ms van Aardt passed away this year.  She is sorely missed but her soul print she left on the school, the staff and the pupils she taught will always be remembered. 

Ms van der Merwe, was appointed in 2008, a loved English teacher retired just before lock down and so we never got the opportunity to bid her farewell. She has left her legacy in the editing of the Kingswood Magazine and her redesign of the Junior School Library into a Media Centre.  Thank you for your many years of service to Kingswood College. 

Ms Jill Long started with us in 2004.  She fulfilled various roles not only as a Pre-Primary school HoD but also supporting her husband, Andy in the Marketing Department and as Manager of the Wyvern Club.  Jill was one of those exemplary teachers that every parent wanted their child to go through her hands. She has a self-less approach and puts the needs of others above her own.  Thank you Jill for being a part of the moulding of many Kingswood pupils. 

Reflecting on this year, I wish to read the following poem: “ If this time” by Kevin McCormack

If this time has taught us anything, it is that success and how we measure it, needs to be redefined, And that the only person to whom you should ever compare yourself; Is who you were, yesterday. The lesson that never before have the past and the future been so irrelevant, And that the quest to find ourselves has been fruitless; Only because we’ve been searching in all the wrong places We are here, We are now And to grasp with both hands, the fresh opportunity to learn, unlearn and relearn If this time is not wasted

Our 125 celebration was a milestone in our schools history and then 2020 unfolded.  No school or any higher education institution had previous experience on how to run a school during a pandemic.  To cope, all we knew was that we would have to be HERO’s – Honest;  Empathetic;  Respectful and Open-minded .  We had to acquire as much information as possible from reliable sources, making a clear decision based on credible information, showing compassion, adopting a willingness to be flexible, encouraging team work and being brave enough to display courageous leadership.  We had to remember that this was a medical matter and that would be the guiding principle. 

This made me wonder about so many areas of our existence and how we don’t move forward because we don’t apply the same HERO principles.  To have courage and show compassion was the only way to steer through 2020.  And we did.    

I need to pause and acknowledge and thank Ms Dianna Hornby, OK 1979.  Thank you for your continual commitment and service to this great school.  Thank you for handing out the prizes today.  You are a Kingswood Hero.   We are delighted to have Mrs Hornby’s granddaughter join us in grade 000 this year.  It is amazing how things come full circle in time.  

This is what Kingswood is about, it all starts with family, we need each other. Family is what matters most and our school community is a family.  The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  Thank you Kingswoodians for journeying with us during this usual year.  2021 the focus will be on character and leadership development.  Onward and Upward!  – Dr Colleen Vassiliou

Nici Coleman our Director of Music brought me a book at the beginning of third term – ‘The purpose driven life by Rick Warren – I encourage every young person in this Chapel to read this book at some point in their life.

Speech Writing: Guidelines & Samples On How To Write A Perfect Speech

Speech-writing is, in most cases, in a form of end of a year speech, prize-giving day speech or any other forms of speech making occasions whereby one is required to deliver a speech. Speech writing demands the skill of writing almost as one speaks.

Speech writing comes in various forms. However, they all have the same structure and lay out though there could be slight changes in tones in the speech depending on the audience you are preparing the speech for and on whose behalf the speech is being written.

Some candidates in the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) often mistake the mode of essay writing and summary writing for speech writing. Not to worry because after digesting the content on this post, you will gain all you need to know in order to write a perfect speech to suit any audience. It will educate you on the structure, chronological order and type of tones and terms to use in speech writing notwithstanding the audience.

Useful Tips on How to Write a Good Speech

(1) content.

The content depends on the topic you are given but your points must be relevant to the topic on which you are writing your speech. In addition, make sure that you write on all the aspects of the question to earn a under content

(ii) Organization

(a) In speech writing, you should imagine that you have an audience listening to you. Therefore, you are expected to start your speech with the usual vocatives: “Chairman, The Principal. Members of staff, Ladies and Gentle-men…” Your audience depends on the question you are answering; your question will definitely give you an idea who your audience is.

(b) You must arrange your ideas or points in a logical sequence.

(iii) Expression

(a) Speech writing demands a good command of language. Use simple sentences because it is important that you should make your audience follow your line of thought

(b) Speech making is meant for oral delivery, therefore, you can use various oratorical techniques like rhetorical questions and you can make use of contracted forms of words like don’t, doesn’t didn’t etc. These oratorical techniques will enable you to write as if you were addressing your audience directly. In addressing your audience, you can use words like, you, our, we, you and I.

(c) Don’t use slangs and colloquial expressions.

Guidelines on How To Write A Speech

In speech writing, you must follow the sequence in which it ought to follow, there is a chronological order you must follow when writing a speech . Interchanging them would be one of the big blunders you should avoid when writing a speech.

Know The Purpose

As the speech writer, you must know the reason for which the speech is being written, you must ask yourself; What am i trying to accomplish with my speech? is it to encourage, inspire, educate, convince, or drive home a point? Your purpose must be well defined as this will determine the tune and direction, structure and result of your write up.

Who Are Your Target Audience

Your speech should be tailored to a specific audience. Your target audience would determine the tone of language you will use in writing your speech. If you’re speaking at a sound healer convention, you won’t need to explain the concept of energetic blocks. And if you’re speaking to an octogenarians-only quilting circle, you probably shouldn’t drop as many F-words as you would with your local guys in the hood..

Know The Length

The length of your write up says a lot. Studies have proven that the human attention span for reading is 10 mins and listening is 15 mins so you need to try and include terms that would catch their attentions. You don’t want to underwhelm or overwhelm your audience hence you need to find a balance. You would agree with me that a fifteen (15) minute keynote speech maybe too long for your speech at your friend’s Bachelor’s party. However, this might be too short when giving a speech at an inaugural lecture.

Practice, Revise, Practice and Practice again…:

This is the final stage in the chronological order of speech writing. Here you have to practice, revise and keep practicing. Practice makes perfect hence cultivate the habit of going over and over again.

  • First and foremost, define your speech’s structure. you need to carve out the major ideas for every section?
  • Secondly, sort out the main ideas in your outline. To do this, you will have to free your mind and allow your creativity flow.
  • Thirdly, this stage involves selecting the seeds from the chaffs. All the points jotted down would need to be properly edited and arranged in a chronological manner and drafted down until you have successfully written a good speech.
  • It is not enough to just write a speech. Your fluency would be determined by the quality of time spent practicing. Continuous practice makes your speech a perfect one. That is, the more you practice your speech the more you’ll discover areas that require amendments, which word or term fits certain description and the audience. Don’t interchange cramming for reading and understanding your speech write up. The guideline on how to write a speech above, will help you better understand your speech rather than cramming it.

Speech Writing Structures

Introduction.

Firstly, you must give a brief introduction of who are you, why you are giving the speech and of course your main thesis for the speech.

Ideally, the introduction ought to be short but it could also be made slightly longer as this depends on the context. For instance, if you’re speaking at a naming ceremony, you definitely will be expected to explain your relationship to the parents of the baby and the family and how much they mean to you since it is an informal relationship. However, if you’re presenting to your class at school, you may be able to head straight into your thesis.

Body (The Main Message)

The majority of your speech should be spent presenting your thesis and supporting material in a simple, organized way.

Wrap everything up and drive home your main idea, whether that’s through providing a few (one to three) key takeaways, or telling one last story that perfectly drive home your points and get it stuck to the memory of your audience.

As the President of the Red Cross Society in your School for example, if you are asked to write a speech that will be delivered at the launching of the branch of the society in your school.

Below is a perfect Sample on how to write a speech on this topic should look;

INTRODUCTION: Your introduction should start with recognizing your audience and then slot in the purpose of your speech before going to the body of your speech.

After about one hundred years of its existence, the Red Cross Society can be found in almost every nation of the world, in all the major cities and in many institutions like ours. Despite this already large presence, new branches are being established world-wide. This is a welcome trend in a world that is filled with violence and misery.

We have decided to start a branch of the society in our school, having realized the pressing need in our school for the kind of services it renders. We have watched with concern, several accidents on our busy roads in Lagos State but of more immediate worry to us is the high incidence of accidents in our school environment. Students have been known to sustain injuries both at work and at play during breaks and organized games. Sometimes when indiscipline rears its head among us, students fight and injure one another. We have also learnt from news reports of places where school buildings have collapsed injuring both staff and students in the process.

Such occurrences have always caused us much distress. Even though we saw the need for relieving the pains suffered by victims of these mishaps, we often merely looked on helplessly. On few occasions when we overcame our fear of blood and sought to help the injured, we only complicated their condition because we lacked the necessary first aid skills.

Chairman, Headmaster, ladies and gentlemen, thank you for allowing me to speak at Speech Day. This is the culmination of a year during which Sedberghians have achieved the highest levels in academia, sport, the arts and, more than ever before, in contributing to the lives of others. Now, relieved from the tyranny of reviewing the detention list and House menus, preparing for morning assembly and routine meetings, I have more time to appreciate the extraordinary range of participation and achievement of our staff and pupils.

So, at the outset, I offer you my deepest thanks for granting us the privilege to work with your sons and daughters, and add my own words of congratulation to those of the Chairman – to our pupils and staff for all that you have achieved. But, and I hope you will forgive me, my warmest thanks and congratulations are reserved for the Headmaster. I dare to suggest that I was the only person who knew what Dan Harrison was taking on in September. Since then, he has led the School to new heights, and no-one could be more delighted than I. I offer him my wholehearted thanks and professional acknowledgement for all that he has achieved.

Much of my work has been with Peter Marshall, our Chief Operating Officer. Between us, we share responsibility for oversight of all aspects of school operations, for defining and constructing the direction of our schools’ development. I could not be more fortunate to work so closely with such an insightful and questioning colleague who is utterly dedicated to the School and who inspires his teams.

It has been a fascinating, challenging and sometimes unnerving year. We have sought to answer the question, “ How may we thrive amidst chaos?” and responded to Simon Sinek’s TED talk, “ The Power of Why ,” which demands that we ask the question. “ Why is Sedbergh’s education important? ”

Our role is to change lives. But Sedbergh was not founded in 1525 to promote individual opportunity, rather – to promote social justice, to raise up those with little and to diminish inequality. As Sedberghians, whether we be pupils, parents, teachers or Governors, ours is a lifelong mission to improve our families, communities and country. Hundreds of alumni have followed that path and I hold up to you the example of Lord Bingham of Cornhill, Master of the Rolls and the most influential constitutional lawyer of the last 100 years.

We have pursued that aim modestly, quietly and effectively for generations, but our country’s current ideological debate requires that we make our voice heard amidst the process of political refreshment. Social inequality, nationalism and global warming are the existential threats of our time. Short-termism founded on political expediency and financial opportunism is the root. As we reflect on the Centenary of the Treaty of Versailles and the approach of the seventy-fifth anniversary of VE Day next May, I put it to you that we are called to make a sacrifice equal to those who went before us.

Sedbergh, and Sedberghians, cannot stand on the side-lines; our responsibility, surely, is to engage directly with the political process and our character prepares us for a lifetime of activism. Alongside social challenge, the environmental crisis we face is as daunting as the conflict our forebears faced in two World Wars. But perhaps it is more difficult because, as high-order consumers we are both the cause and solution. Only we can answer the question, “ What will I give-up for the greater good? What will we leave those who follow?”

The answer lies in redefining success as being the individual’s contribution to society and of individual creativity in place of material acquisition. I suggest this outlook will serve our children better than consumerism and that it is entirely in keeping with Sedberghian culture and tradition.

And as an organisation, Sedbergh must answer the same questions. It has been a debate that I and the School Governors have engaged in for much of the year.

These men and women contribute immeasurably to our work and this School’s success, I offer them my special thanks and in particular to Hugh Blair, Chairman; and Richard Gledhill, Vice Chairman, who, between them, travel the length of the country on the School’s behalf and even around the world. They invest hundreds of hours in our School’s welfare and Sedbergh would not be where it is today without them.

The Strategic Plan which they have approved is as bold a commitment to future generations as any before;

  • We have placed the development of teaching and independent learning at the heart of our ambitions; and will invest in our pupils’ technological skills, focusing on their application to employment opportunities and environmental sustainability.
  • This will go hand in hand with the development of a new Technology and Sixth Form centre.
  • We will review our carbon footprint and invest in its reduction through extensive House refurbishment, by reviewing our transport and purchasing arrangements.
  • We will invest further in the emotional health of our pupils to ensure they are best placed to manage complex lifestyles and will increase our work in the town to promote Sedbergh as a place for young families and new businesses.
  • We will continue to welcome pupils and colleagues from different backgrounds and all nations in the knowledge that diversity strengthens our community. And we will extend our partnerships overseas so that we may provide opportunities for pupils and teachers to travel and work, and to build financial resilience against the economic uncertainties of the future.
  • We will ensure that Governance is connected with parents, pupils and staff to ensure transparency of decisions and accountability in all respects. This includes publication of our Plan at the start of next term and annual reports to parents and staff about progress on these important matters.

We cannot discharge our responsibilities to the next and subsequent generations without the collective engagement of pupils, parents, staff, Governors and Old Sedberghians. As the 500 th anniversary of Roger Lupton’s extraordinary foundation approaches, every member of our community is important. I hope beyond measure that you will embrace these ambitions as your own to ensure that every one of us plays our part in all our children’s futures.

On this day, prizes are given to the students for the best performances both for academics and for co-curricular activities.

The last prize-giving ceremony of our school was held on the 23rd January 2017. It was held in the school auditorium. The auditorium was beautifully decorated with colourful papers, flags, and festoons. A gate was erected nicely to welcome the chief guest and other honourable guests. The Director-General of Secondary and Higher Education, Dhaka was invited to grace the occasion as the chief guest. When the chief guest arrived, the headmaster and other teachers received him at the gate. The scouts of the school gave him a guard of honour. There was pin-drop silence in the hall, As soon as the chief guest occupied his seat.

Our headmaster presided over the function. It was 3 p.m. when the function began with the recitation from the Holy Quran. Two little girls then garlanded the chief guest and the - president. The headmaster then read out the Annual Report of the school. Giving an account of the past progress of the school, he also spoke about many problems of the school with an earnest request to the Govt. to come forward in solving them.

After the headmaster's report, the prize-giving ceremony began. The assistant headmaster of our school called the names of the prize winners and the chief guest gave away the prizes. The distribution of prizes came to an end in an hour.

After the distribution of the prizes, the chief guest delivered an important and instructive speech to the students. He advised them to be very attentive to their studies and keep themselves away from politics and other undesirable activities. He advised them to build up their character to become good citizens of the country to discharge the responsibilities entrusted upon them.

Finally, the headmaster thanked the chief guest for his kind visit to the school. He also gave a vote of thanks to all who attended the function and to others who worked hard for the success of the function. The function came to an end with the singing of the National Anthem.

Prize Giving Speech 2021

Before I launch into my brief address can I welcome our guest speaker, Darryl Cherrett – thanks for taking the time away from the High Court to be here today. There are a number of aspiring lawyers in the audience today I am sure – so if you were able to be around for a few minutes after we are done to talk to them then that would be great. If you are aiming for the spotlight in the courtroom then head Darryl’s way…

Good afternoon year 12 and 13 – and prize winners. I am SO glad that we can be here. Take a few moments just to soak up the atmosphere of this place.  Take a sighting to see if you can spot the columns bending under the weight of stone in the spire (don’t worry they have been taking the strain for over 750 years so they will probably last the next 40 minutes or so!). Look for the optical vanishing point as the passage ways and arches march away from you towards the Eastern end and the altar. Sense the vastness, sealed in by limestone, oak and travertine. Wonder at the scattering of light through medieval and modern glass. Listen for the echoes of more than seven hundred years of worship for pilgrims and local alike. It’s quite something – something that I want everyone in the school to share but especially for you, Years 12 & 13, nearly 400 strong, who hold the standard for Bishop’s. I hoped that all 1,170 students could be here to share the wow factor, but that wasn’t to be. Whether you have been at Bishop’s for over 6 years or for just 3 weeks you can sense what it means to be a part of our community here in the very heart of Salisbury. Experiences like this really are an essential ingredient of the glue that holds us all together. Even in this world that seems to be turning upside down Prize Giving is important. You’ve all got a copy of the programme, which gives quite a vivid picture of what has gone on in the past academic year.

Despite the periods of lockdown there was still an enormous amount of busyness, a profusion of brilliant performances in different areas of the school, lots of examples of students and achieving amazing things in the teeth of adversity – or should I say getting things done despite self-isolation, the incursion of remote learning and the straitjacket of risk assessment. At times it has felt like we have been swimming against the tide, but the artists, sportsmen and women, musicians, politicians and academics have still shone through. That doesn’t happen by accident. A lot of determination, organisation and hard work have made things possible. Despite the sheer randomness of things, the unforeseen hurdles posed by Covid and the long list of things that simply can’t happen the truth is that we have still managed a huge amount here at  Bishop’s. We should be very proud of that.

The canvas of the last academic year was laid out by tidal forces beyond our control here in Salisbury, but it was equally characterised by changes within the school. This year the developments were more profound than mere bricks and mortar, more far reaching than operational systems. During the roller coaster period of lock down and reopening, Bishop’s expanded to its biggest number of students ever, and for the first time in 93 years we welcomed female students back here in The Close. In September 2020 we started with 1055 students, including our biggest ever Year 12 (at 170) and just over 40 girls, and of course we have recently expanded again. There are now around 1170 students on roll, and over 100 Bishop’s Girls. The demographic growth was long planned of course, but theory is very different from the actuality, and with the benefit of a year’s experience it is clear that Bishop’s is now a school that is both bigger and better. More students mean more opportunity, stronger teams, more music, and stronger finances. The girls have brought colour, life, humanity, sporting and musical excellence and academic strength, and their arrival was universally welcomed by the staff. Their impact has been considerable, and it was fantastic to be able to appoint our first coeducational team of Prefects and Senior Prefects in the Summer Term. The first of many. 

Bishop’s has changed in other ways over the period of the pandemic. An increasing amount of business happens via MS Teams, and much of this will stay as we come to live with Covid-19 in due course. So parents’ evenings will stay online, recruitment events will be a mixture of face to face and virtual formats, and briefings for parents will largely be online too. We will find a range of other events to get parents and students back in to school together so that they can meet their teachers, tutors, mentors and prefects – thus we have had the recent series of Year 7 House Suppers, a social evening for Year 9 and another for Year 12 which will follow. The functionality of Teams has meant that it has become the academic platform for the school, channelling homework, coursework, communications and enrichment for all age groups. 

Despite the pandemic we have still managed to welcome a significant number of guest speakers, across a range of subjects, to shine a light on real world experience and broaden horizons. Many of those lectures have also been interactive live streamed events, and in many ways that works well as it encourages engagement more readily. The prospect of a South Western Railway train journey from Waterloo to Salisbury sometimes gets in the way of educational enrichment! That will all stay – and we are the better for it.

There was another aspect of the past year that was highly unusual – for the first, and probably the only time we had the process of teachers allocating grades for our candidates in Year 11 and Year 13 in lieu of GCSE and A levels respectively. Those of you in Year 12 experienced the GCSE version first hand, and I am not sure that anyone would want to see an encore. An uncertain few months topped off with a feeling that almost every piece of work submitted could be of critical importance. The edge of the abyss has probably never felt closer! Having said that you have emerged with a set of qualifications to be proud of and now you’re here. Phew! Of course the old hands in Year 13 are mid-journey, and it looks like exams will be back in fashion for summer 2022, albeit in a diluted form perhaps. All of you will have experienced the delights of online learning once again, and there will be areas of knowledge and understanding that are thinner than they should be. Stick with it this year – your teachers will make sure that they build your confidence through to the summer. Aim high and you’ll get there – and that’s the message that I would give to all of the boys and girls at Bishop’s for this current year.

The other unique experience that we’ve had in school during the past year have been the episodes of mass testing in March and once again earlier this month. In total over 5,000 lateral flow tests administered in the Sports Hall, masterminded by the Bursar and Mrs Miles, an extraordinary achievement. Now, of course, the vaccination programme is to come for 12-16 year olds, the next instalment in the Covid story. How the world has changed. Some one-off events for us all then, and some quite radical changes in the way that Bishop’s operates during the past year. What is unchanging is the character of the school and the place that you all – our seniors - have in it. Every time that you join an assembly or a tutor group for registration, each time you help to run a club, sort a society meeting, ride shotgun to a teacher on an extracurricular event, or volunteer to be a guide for parents and future students you are helping to build something special. Every time you sing in the Choir or play in an orchestra or band, help out with a vaccination, coach or build a team, mentor a youngster in a maze of Mathematical bewilderment, assist with Chapel or a service or represent all of us in a fixture you are creating – or recreating – what makes this school such a unique place in which to live and grow. You are here because you establish the path for others to follow; the past year has tested all of us but now we are in a very strong position to make this school - your school – an even better, more exciting place to be in the coming years.

We should all be in optimistic mood; there will be delays and frustrations in the coming year, but I feel that we are in a much better place with just some Covid aftershocks to endure. The school is in a good place and opportunity beckons for all of you, both Year 13 and 12 as we learn to live and learn in the post-pandemic world. Your job will be to really get stuck in and be ambitious – for yourself and what we can achieve here together in the shadow of the spire…

Day 1: Speech and Prize Giving Day: A Spirited Start with Sports and Game

The event in general kicked off with a mini Inter-house sports competition. The college’s students were all in their respective houses ( Grace House, Royal House, Peace House, Favour House), with much enthusiasm and readiness to showcase their talent and teamwork. It’s usually an amazing moment seeing the students cheer on their respective houses in a spirited display of unity and friendly rivalry. The competition featured Indoor and outdoor games. The indoor games were Puzzles, Table tennis, Scrabble, and Ludo tournaments.

The students enjoyed these games, indicating that intellectual capacity extends beyond textbooks. The school field was used for the outdoors. We had the 100 and 200-meter races, relay races, sack bag races, and the marathon. These whole activities exemplified teamwork and coordination, tested the limits of stamina, and above all brought laughter and fun to the fore. Through these extracurricular activities, Olive Grove College not only promoted physical fitness but also instilled essential values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance in its students.

Day 2: Speech and Prize Giving Day: Awards in Recognition of Excellence

The second day of the event was usually the much-anticipated Speech and Prize Giving Day itself. The event usually starts with a word of prayer followed by an opening speech by the proprietress. During her speech, she made mention of a few important points one of which is education; a prerequisite for personal and societal growth. Her words brought to light again the college’s dedication and commitment to developing future leaders. After the opening speech, the stage came alive with a series of performances ( The Spelling Bee competition, Speed and Accuracy Maths Quiz, Dance, School Choir Ministration, and Skill Acquisition) that left the audience spellbound. Competitions like this in most cases, are to test the students’ ability in the use of English words and their mental sharpness.

The Students also demonstrated their talent and resourcefulness in multiple styles of dance steps; this added a vibrant and cultural element to the event while the school choir’s ministration reminded everyone of the power of music to inspire and encourage. The exhibition of newly acquired skills was one of the major highlights of the day. At Olive Grove College, we place a heavy emphasis on skill development, we acknowledge the fact that education goes beyond textbooks. The exhibition went from detergent making to disinfectant, tailoring, and computer coding. Interestingly, the students demonstrated these skills to the best of their abilities. This signifies that indeed they were fully armed with practical skills that will help them well beyond the college gates.

Awards in Recognition of Excellence

Progressively, It was time to recognize and celebrate excellence through awards. Academic and non-academic prizes were given to students on merit; in order to recognize their hard work and devotion. Academic performance was highlighted in categories such as Overall Best in Grade 7, Grade 8, and Grade 9, while honors such as Neatest Room, Neatest Boy/Girl, and Most Organized Student recognized attributes that transcend beyond the classroom. The Overall Best in Grade awards is a source of motivation for the students; making them understand that striving for excellence in their academic pursuit is key.

Award Presentation

The neatness and organization awards are just to point out the importance of discipline and orderliness in one’s life, skills that are invaluable in any field of endeavor. You will agree with us that the most heartwarming awards were those for Improved Behavior. Here is one of our favorite statements at Olive Grove College, “Personal Growth is A Journey. So, in giving the Improved Behavior Award, we are simply saying that we acknowledge the student’s significant strides in character development, and this again is in line with our vision statement to raise godly leaders and develop a total man who would succeed in life.

Olive Grove College’s Speech and Prize Giving Day was more than just an event; it was a celebration of the college’s Mission Statement: Training the students academically, spiritually, and emotionally in line with Global needs, to develop a total man who would succeed in academics and life.

Annual prize distribution day is a prestige event that our school holds every year. The main aim of this event is to reward the students who achieve excellence in their studies, and are always a step ahead than the others. I am very happy to announce that this year a lot of students are on that mark, and they shall be rewarded respectively.

The annual prize distribution day is not just a day to reward our students but, this day is specially organized to make our students believe that their efforts do not go unrecognized, and that they are an asset of this school, and this country.

Parents surely appreciate their children upon securing excellent marks in their academics however the school believes that just appreciating isn’t enough. Children need motivation, motivation to continue their studies in an excellent way, this creates a sense of motivation among the students, making them able to continue further the same way they have been.

To appreciate our students, we now will begin our Annual Prize Distribution ceremony.

The Prize Giving Ceremony is a memorable day for those who get prizes, and even for those who get none.

Every year prizes are given to the students of our school for general proficiency and sports and games. It is a day we all look forward to.

Our last prize giving ceremony took place on the 15th May before the Summer Vacation. Preparations for it, however, had started in April. The school building was tastefully decorated with flags and festoons. The school was wearing gay looks. Invitation cards were sent to all the guardians of the pupils and the distinguished men and women of the locality. The function started at 2 P.M. The Principal of the Presidency College presided.

The Headmaster received him and his wife at the gate. The guests, teachers and students were seated. The volunteers were moving about to maintain order and discipline. The programme commenced with an opening song. It was followed by recitations in English, Bengali and Sanskrit. The Headmaster read out the annual report of the school, which was a record of its all-round development.

The prizes were given away by the wife of the President amidst cheers. The President gave a neat little speech in which he congratulated the prize winners. He asked the students to maintain the glorious tradition of the school. His speech was followed by a vote of thanks by the Headmaster. The function was over with a closing song.
