Relation between EBP and the Quadruple Aim
Evidence-based practice heavily relies on the use of available scientific evidence for decision making in the clinical setting. Ever since its formal introduction in the 1990s, evidence-based practices have continued to gain ground in management, the formation of public policies, education and nursing practice. As one of the most effective problem-solving approach in clinical settings, evidence-based practice integrates the best available evidence from well-designed scientific studies, the preferences, and values of patients and the expertise of clinicians to make decisions regarding patient care (Crabtree et al., 2016). Assignment: Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim sample essay As a result, the main aim of evidence-based providers is to ensure that patients are provided with high quality and safe healthcare services. For high chances of success, EBP embraces an interprofessional model where shared decision making is greatly emphasized. Similarly, different actors at the state, federal and local levels are essential for the adoption and implementation of evidence-based practice. According to Crabtree et al., (2016), nurses have widely embraced a positive attitude towards evidence-based practice and its providers and the majority are ready to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge for its adoption into clinical practice.
The quadruple aim has four major goals mainly: improving patient experience, population health, the work-life of healthcare providers and reducing healthcare-associated costs (Sakallaris et al., 2016). The quadruple aim purposes to achieve the aforementioned goals through the redesigning of healthcare facilities. However, a major setback in achieving these goals in the wider health sector is improving population health while at the same time containing/reducing healthcare-related costs, which requires a high level of efficiency and effectiveness (Bodenheimer & Sinsky, 2014). A highly productive health workforce is mandatory for an effective healthcare system. This is what promoted the translation of the triple aim to the quadruple aim through the addition of a fourth goal which is improving healthcare providers’ work-life. The Impact That EBP May Have On Factors Influencing These Quadruple Aim Elements.
The development and adoption of evidence-based practice is mainly to improve the quality of healthcare services that patients receive and places a lot of value inpatient care in clinical settings. Similarly, evidence-based practice has a direct impact on the work-life of healthcare providers since, to receive high quality and safe healthcare services, staff needs to be very productive. The purpose of every healthcare institution is to ensure that the life of patients, as well as that of healthcare staff providing healthcare services, is improved.
Patient experience
All strategies used in evidence-based practice permit healthcare providers to translate the findings of research into clinical practice. By utilizing efficient searching skills of literature and formally applying the rules that guide evidence to evaluate the findings of research, nurses and other healthcare providers can efficiently apply existent scientific knowledge to clinical practice based on individual patient needs (Jacobs et al., 2018). As a result, this improves the quality of healthcare services that patients receive. In recent times, most healthcare institutions are embracing evidence-based practice to solve clinical issues that directly impact patient care and this is what has led to improved patient experiences Assignment: Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim sample essay.
Population health
Evidence-based practices purpose to educate populations on the individual health determinants, the benefits, and limitations of specific treatments, cultural and healthcare practices. Those integrating evidence-based practices in various population settings also purpose to ensure the equitable distribution of resources to achieve specific aims (Sakallaris et al., 2016). Populations can be classified based on its needs as identified by socioeconomic status, the support received from family and individual health status, and this promotes equity and efficiency in the allocation and distribution of resources for health promotion. All evidence-based processes involved in care have been specifically designed to address individual patient needs as opposed to shaping healthcare patterns based on subgroups.
A major challenge for most healthcare facilities is directly related to the measure of per capita costs of healthcare as it needs all healthcare expenditures to be captured, measurement of actual costs and indexing the costs to the healthcare market. According to Sakallaris et al., (2016), the most common method used to measure actual costs is discounts and pricing. Therefore, for most healthcare institutions, it is a huge challenge to provide safe and quality healthcare services at lower healthcare costs. When an institution embraces the use of the latest technology to improve efficiency and most recent treatment methods as revealed through evidence-based practice, the quality of care, as well as the costs, automatically increases.
The work-life of healthcare providers
The key components of a conducive healthcare environment should support interprofessional collaboration. Interprofessional collaboration has been evidenced to improve patient health outcomes and the satisfaction of healthcare providers. It also reduces provider burnout and turnover rates, which promotes staff productivity (William et al., 2016). The three major components of such an environment include the structural and policy elements and actively engaging the workforce in shared decision making. Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim The evidenced-based practice uses current best evidence to make clinical decisions about patient care (Melnyk,2018); it’s a lifetime problem-solving method. By using Evidence- based practice, clinicians can enhance the quality of healthcare, have better patient outcomes, reduce the per capita cost of healthcare, and empower clinicians to secure a work-life balance, which is what the Quadruple Aim of Healthcare is (Melnky, 2018). The concept of the Triple Aim was first initiated by The Institute for Healthcare Improvement in 2007, focusing on helping healthcare systems optimize their performance using a variety of metrics. Later in 2014, the triple aim was extended to the quadruple aim when the focus on either (1) empowering clinicians to find a work-life balance or (2) securing health equity was added. The Quadruple Aim and Evidence-based practice are inevitably linked. Healthcare professionals must utilize evidence-based practice to achieve the Quadruple Aim of Healthcare. Patient Outcomes and EBP When using healthcare professionals use EBP approach to health care they are using the best evidence to make their clinical decisions. This allows them to deliver the nest and most innovative care to the patients they serve, without EBP practice is quickly outdated and can be a determent to the patient.
Healthcare Cost and EBP Numerous studies have shown that implementing evidence-based practice results in higher quality and reliable care, better population health outcomes, and reduced per capita
cost. The United States spends more on healthcare than any other country, but it still ranks 37th in world health outcomes (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2017). Although there has been an explosion of scientific evidence to guide health professionals in their decision-making, implementing evidence-based practice is still not the norm in most healthcare systems in the United States. The health care system continues practices that are steeped in tradition versus implementing practices based on sound evidence, such as unnecessary screening for conditions when not indicated. By implementing the latest up-to-date techniques recommended by evidence-based practice, treatment costs are optimized (Stahmer, 2019). Work-life of Healthcare Providers The medical field has a higher incidence of workforce burnout than any other type of employment, affecting more than 50% of healthcare providers and contributing to more than 400,000 unintended deaths annually in the United States (Melnyk et al, 2021). Depression and burnout among healthcare workers has become an epidemic. In 2014, Bodenheimer and Sinsky contended to add the fourth aim to the Triple Aim that would focus on improving the work life and well-being of clinicians because of the escalating high rates of burnout and dissatisfaction with their jobs which was adversely impacting healthcare quality and safety. Research has shown since then that clinicians who participate in an evidence-based approach to care feel more empowered and have higher satisfaction within their role (Melnyk et al, 2010).

Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim Essay
The recent introduction of the Quadruple Aim approach emphasizes the healthcare system and healthcare workers’ importance. The goal of the course includes improving job level satisfaction among healthcare employees. While implementing evidence-based practice (EBP) is considered a standard, the actual execution of EBP implementation has been inconsistent. This essay will analyze the connection between Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim and determine whether the relationship between the two matters is direct or indirect.
The goal of the Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim is to acknowledge the effort the healthcare system puts into the other three aspects of the approach: population health, enhancing patient experience, and lowering healthcare services costs. Quadruple Aim in healthcare assesses workers’ dissatisfaction with their jobs due to incivility, work overload, neglect, and disrespect (Arnetz et al., 2020). Although the EBP might not touch on the subjects directly, there are some connecting points between the two issues. The connection mainly appears because of the Quadruple Aim approach’s fourth point – the healthcare system is closely related to all the parts of the Triple Aim approach.
Addressing the first point of the Quadruple Aim healthcare, patient experience, one could say that EBP plays a significant part in the subjects. Although EBP’s goal is to improve the quality of healthcare services and patient outcomes, according to Hashish & Alsayed (2020), there is no correlation between the implementation of EBP and patient outcomes. However, McKinney et al. (2019) state that the performance of EBP and Quadruple aim sometimes increases nurses’ confidence in performing a literature search and the ability to analyze and evaluate evidence. Although the skills acquired after EBP implementation do not directly impact the patients’ experience, improving nurses’ ability to translate theoretical skills to practice indicates professional development, leading to a higher quality of healthcare services.
Considering the second and most crucial point of the Quadruple aim approach, population health, EBP positively impacts the quality of healthcare services by preventing excessive workforce turnover. If a widespread implementation of EBP could resolve at least a small portion of the turnover issue, it could help with the current incivility situation. As the efficiency of the healthcare system heavily relies on workforce productivity, improved communication and relationships in working groups would prevent workplace incivility. As more employees consider staying in the workplace over leaving the career path, more people would come for the services.
Previous arguments also relate to healthcare services costs. When the problem of turnover is resolved, the cost of healthcare services will decrease (Hashish & Alsayed, 2020). Although there is no evidence for a correlation between job satisfaction and the use of EBP, there is a connection between job satisfaction and the confidence the employees gain from EBP implementation.
Therefore, using EBP through the Triple-aim approach could be described as indirect. Still, the Quadruple aim approach is directly connected to the healthcare system part that heavily influences other subjects. Although the EBP’s goals target the patients’ safety and improvement of the healthcare system, comprehensive implementation of the approach could impact the problem of workforce turnover. The overall healthcare system and population health would benefit when the turnover issue is solved or improved through EBP.
