Baang Movie Review: A decent combination of crime and dark comedy
Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).
In the realm crafted by debut director Sree Ganesh Parashuram, the term ‘bang’ takes on a new meaning. With Kichcha Sudeep’s baritone booming as a voice-over at the right intervals, Baang morphs into a unique hybrid of crime, dark comedy, and a gangster-themed action thriller. The director embarks on a journey of experimentation in this just over two-hour film, delivering an experience that resonates like the echoing of a ‘bang’.
One striking aspect of the film is Shanvi Shrivastava’s maiden portrayal of a gangster. Accompanying her are singer-composer Raghu Dixit and music director Ritvik Muralidhar, both making their acting debuts. This rare combination of talents, fused with action and thriller elements, beckons us to explore the unique attributes they bring to Baang.
Director: Sree Ganesh Parashuram
Cast: Shanvi Srivastava, Raghu Dixit, and Ritvik Muralidhar
The narrative of Baang unfolds with Aarav (Ritvik Muralidhar) seizing the chance for a night out, spurred by his brother’s desire for privacy with his girlfriend. Along with his younger brother, Ayush and two friends, Sunil (Sunil Gujjar) and Bhushan (Natya Ranga), Aarav is out for an enjoyable evening. However, the jovial atmosphere takes an unexpected twist as they fall prey to a sudden attack by criminals. Pursuing a drugs-filled bag supposedly stowed in the car’s trunk, the assailants take the younger brother hostage, demanding that the gang of friends retrieve and deliver the bag to Daddy (Raghu Dixit). This description merely scratches the surface of the intensity that unfolds, setting off a sequence of occurrences culminating in an action-packed climax.
The director employs an innovative narrative structure, breaking the story into chapters named after iconic Kannada films such as Trimurthy, Jedara Bale, Operation Diamond Rocket, and Hello Daddy , among others.
While Baang may not fulfill all the check boxes of an unequivocal entertainer, it undoubtedly deserves recognition for its innovative presentation. The director draws inspiration from modern auteurs, skillfully adopting diverse narrative techniques and angles. Even if the execution occasionally falls short, the film does work as a showcase of his multifaceted talent. A more refined script and judicious handling of these experiments could propel Ganesh’s directorial endeavours to even greater heights.
The film’s evocative background score and music by Ritvik Muralidhar bestow an unconventional ambience upon this experimental thriller.
It is a uniformly performed series with actors Ritvik, Raghu Dixit, Sunil Gujjar, Bhushan, Sathivika, and actor Jahangir definitely scoring high. The film for all its merits and demerits will be best remembered for showcasing Shanvi in a new light, and it is a welcome addition to her repertoire.

Review: Debutant director Ganesh’s ‘Baang’ with an extra ‘a’ is a dud in the end
Even Shanvi Srivastava, who plays a gangster for the first time, cannot save this so-called 'action thriller' from being an excruciating experience.

Music saves this experimental thriller.

The word “bang” literally means a sudden loud or sharp noise. Whereas, debutant director Sree Ganesh Parashuram’s Baang which comes with an extra “a” is an action-thriller of a different kind altogether.
To explain it in simple words, though the film is just a few minutes more than two hours, it ends up as a never-ending saga. That’s the kind of a “bang” experience it offers.
Interestingly, the movie has Shanvi Shrivastava playing a gangster, for the first time onscreen. It also has singer-composer Raghu Dixit making his debut as an actor. But to no avail.
So, what makes Baang an “unforgettable” action-cum-thriller? Well, let’s take a sneak peek into it:
Shanvi Srivasthava in ‘Baang’. (Supplied)
When was the last time you came across a movie where something or someone is left inside the trunk/boot of a car, especially belonging to a stranger?
Yes, numerous ones. This one, too, has a similar sequence which kicks off a chain of events leading to a literally “breath-taking” climax.
But before that, we have three friends venturing out on a long drive and late-night party. They do so because one of the friend’s parents is out of station and his elder brother lures him out of the house as he wants some private time with his girlfriend.
Wait for a second, there are four people. Three friends and the younger brother of the rich guy in the gang.
When the gang of friends are almost done chilling out, they are attacked by real gangsters. They are looking for a bag — supposed to be in the trunk of their car — containing drugs of the highest quality worth ₹40 crore.
They take the young boy hostage with an ultimatum to the gang to find the bag and hand it over to the “daddy” gangster. If this already sounds excruciating, then imagine the experience that follows thereafter.

It comes in chapters.

In an attempt to make it a one-of-its-kind gangster-based action thriller, newcomer Ganesh tries a few new tricks that never work but go against the very intention to make it unique.
There are several chapters to the action saga which are titled after blockbuster Kannada movies like Thrimurthy (1975), Jedara Bale (1968), Hello Daddy (1996), Operation Diamond Racket (1978), and so on.
This backfires as audiences are reminded of the classic hits films and that they are watching a film of a different experience.
However, only director Ganesh can explain the idea to chapter the film in different segments which coincides with the movie titles of classic Kannada films or how it even relates to the sequences.

Experiments galore.
While it may not meet the expectations of a bang-on entertainer, Baang , however, scores a few good points when it comes to its unique presentation on screen. Seems like the director is influenced by new-age filmmakers in telling a tale in multiple ways and angles.
Despite all the hiccups, the filmmaker should be appreciated for experimenting in his very first venture. It gives the impression that he wants to showcase all his talent in one go but unfortunately falters big time.
Nevertheless, if worked on a much more sensible script and managed his experiments to good effect, Ganesh has all the qualities to make it work in his favour.
Insofar as performances are concerned, Shanvi puts her heart and soul but loses the effect in the end. So do Raghu Dixit and the gang of friends.
The biggest takeaway in Baang is the background score and music by Ritvik Muralidhar. Music gives an unusual feel to the experimental thriller.
Further, Ritvik as (one of the friends) Aarav delivers a decent performance.

Like too many cooks spoil the broth, too much of an experiment makes this Baang movie skippable.
However, Shanvi Srivastava’s fans may find some solace in her new avatar as a gangster.

Aarav, Bhushan, and Sunil are in a fix, as they have to get back a bag of drugs worth 40 crore rupees for a gangster, Daddy. They have to do this to save Aarav’s brother Aayush. Unfortunately they are not the only ones pursuing the bags, with rival gangster Leona joining the game. Do they make it?
Star Performances
It seems that Kannada cinema is making some strides in the right direction. Raghu Dixit, known chiefly for his independent creations as a rock artist, has surprised many with his sly demeanor throughout the movie.
For an industry that is slowly realizing its true potential, the Kannada film Baang is an earnest effort in the right direction. It might not be entirely out of the blue like the 2019 Telugu classic ‘Mathu Vadalra’ [made on an identical theme], but it is not dull either.
Making a good dark comedy is like walking a tightrope: one wrong step and the world comes crashing down. Thankfully, ‘Baang’ is not the other way round. For a newbie director, this movie is definitely an effort in the right direction. The unconventional narrative structure also makes the audience genuinely interested in the same. Long story short, ‘Baang’ manages to keep you hooked.
One of the notable aspects of the movie is its watertight screen time. The barely 2 hours plus runtime sets the stage for a crisp, adrenaline-pumping action flick, infused with a healthy dose of dark comedy. For a film with newbies like Raghu Dixit and Rithvik Muralidhar, 'Baang' does pack a healthy punch. Even Shanvi Srivastava makes it count in a role not very common in the Sandalwood, that of a female gangster.
However, the comic caper is not without its fair share of flaws. The editing looks a bit choppy, especially during the second half. For a moment, it looked as if the movie could’ve taken a different course altogether, but for an engaging climax.
What’s There?
• Slick Runtime, Engaging Visuals
• Impressive BGMs, earnest efforts from the lead actors
• Both Engaging and Entertaining
• Surprise Efforts from actors Shanvi Srivastava and Shraya Rao
What’s Not There?
• Repetitive Sequences that interrupt a smooth flow of Narrative
• Sloppy Execution that could’ve almost destroyed the 2nd half
Except for a few hiccups, 'Baang' is an entertaining roller coaster that is worth a watch. It is flawed, yet engaging in its own sweet way. Don't miss it!

In late 2020, reports surfaced that PRK Productions would produce a film directed by debut filmmakers Raghav Nayak and Prashanth Raj. The film was described as a thriller, with the directors having worked on the script for approximately four years. Official production began with a Pooja ceremony in the presence of the late Puneeth Rajkumar on October 8, 2021.
The film began its initial filming after the muhurta on October 8, 2021. Unfortunately, production was paused following the unexpected passing of Puneeth Rajkumar on October 29, 2021. Shooting resumed in January 2022 and was completed by September 2022.
The film's teaser, called "Emergency Dose 1," was released on March 17, 2024, coinciding with the late Puneeth Rajkumar's birth anniversary. The film's trailer, known as "Emergency Dose 2," was unveiled on April 1, 2024. As part of the movie's promotions, the team released a song titled "Ninagaage" on April 9, 2024, in celebration of Ugadi/Kannada New Year. The second single, "Nashey Nashey," was launched on April 18, 2024, by actor Siddarth.
