The 2023 Oscars will be handed out Sunday night in Hollywood.

The 95th annual Academy Awards returns to the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood after a one-year hiatus on Sunday, with Jimmy Kimmel as the night’s host , marking his third time leading the evening.

“It’s so important to have a host who knows how to handle live television and a live audience,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer recently said of Kimmel’s appeal. “He’s funny, he’s respectful, his edges aren’t too sharp.”

Espn responds to criticism over prince harry's espy award honor, bet apologizes to usher, says "audio malfunction" led to portions of his speech being "inadvertently muted".

As for his approach to another possible slap, Kimmel told The Hollywood Reporter he’s ready: “If somebody comes up on the stage and slaps me? Well, I size them up, and, if I’m bigger than they are, I beat the shit out of them on television. And if it’s the Rock, I run.”

After last year’s controversial decision to pre-tape eight categories — documentary short, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short and sound — sparked backlash from the entertainment industry, all 23 categories will be presented live at the event this year.

Everything Everywhere All at Once,   All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár ,  Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness and Women Talking will compete for the top prize of the night at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday.

Here’s what to know about the 2023 Oscars.

How to Watch

The ceremony will be broadcast on ABC starting at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET and available to watch on ABC.com and the ABC app through viewers’ cable providers. The show will also be available to stream on Hulu Live TV, YouTubeTV, AT&T TV and FuboTV, many of which offer free trials.

For those who would like to watch the awards show but aren’t in the United States, the Oscars will be broadcast in more than 200 territories. THR has put together a handy guide , plus the Academy has an extensive list of local channels .

E! Live From The Red Carpet will air from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. PT/5 p.m.-7 p.m. ET, followed by a fashion recap from 4 p.m.- 5 p.m. PT and E! After Party from 8:30 p.m.-10 p.m. PT/11:30 p.m.-1 a.m. ET.

ABC News will also host a preshow special called On the Red Carpet Live: Countdown to Oscars 95 , which airs from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. PT/1-4 p.m. ET and will be available to stream on the ABC News Live website from 10:30 a.m. PT/1:30 p.m. ET until the official start of the show.

Who to Watch

In addition to Kimmel, several of Hollywood’s A-listers will present this year’s Oscars to the winners. Unlike past years, however, not every acting winner from the previous year will be onstage to hand out the best acting and supporting acting trophies. With Smith banned from the Oscars for 10 years after slapping Rock onstage last year and resigning from the Academy, the King Richard winner will not attend the 95th annual awards show. It has not been announced who will be presenting which awards to whom on Sunday.

This year’s presenters include Florence Pugh, Andrew Garfield, Halle Bailey, Antonio Banderas, Elizabeth Banks, Jessica Chastain, John Cho, Hugh Grant, Danai Gurira, Salma Hayek Pinault, Nicole Kidman, Sigourney Weaver, Riz Ahmed, Emily Blunt, Glenn Close, Jennifer Connelly, Ariana DeBose, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Troy Kotsur, Jonathan Majors, Melissa McCarthy, Janelle Monáe, Deepika Padukone, Questlove, Zoe Saldaña and Donnie Yen.

Most of the best original song nominations will be performed at the show this year. Rihanna will take the stage for a rendition of her first Oscar-nominated tune “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever . Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava will perform “Naatu Naatu” from RRR .

David Byrne, Stephanie Hsu and Son Lux will sing “This Is a Life” from Everything Everywhere All at Once , and Sofia Carson will take the stage to perform Diane Warren’s “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman . Lenny Kravitz will perform the “In Memoriam” segment .

However, Lady Gaga will not perform her nominated song, “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick , at the show. “We invited all five,” Oscars executive producer and showrunner Glenn Weiss said of this year’s nominees for best song. “We have great relationship with Lady Gaga, but she is in the middle of shooting a movie [ Joker: Folie à Deux ] It didn’t feel like she could get a performance to the caliber that she is used to, so she isn’t going to perform at the show.”

Nominations

A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once leads all the nominees , with 11 nods, including best picture, best actress for Michelle Yeoh , best director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and supporting acting noms for Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu.

Some of the acting categories featured expected names like Elvis ‘ Austin Butler, The Whale ‘s Brendan Fraser and Tár ‘s Cate Blanchett, but a few nominees were a bit of a surprise. Blonde star Ana de Armas earned her first best actress Oscar nom (and the first for an actress of Cuban descent ) for her role in Netflix’s polarizing Marilyn Monroe biopic . To Leslie star Andrea Riseborough’s questionable campaign — fueled by A-listers in the weeks before voting closer — resulted in her first nomination.

Riseborough’s unconventional campaign led to an internal review from the Academy after a widespread debate about the grassroots effort, in which several celebrities hosted events for the actress and raved about her performance in the film on social media and to their friends in the actors branch of the Academy. “We did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern,” CEO Bill Kramer said in a statement. “These tactics are being addressed with the responsible parties directly.”

The Oscar nominations this year saw a total of 16 people who were first-time nominees in the acting categories, including all five men up for best actor, four out of the five up for best supporting actor, three for best actress and four for best supporting actress.

Steven Spielberg, Martin McDonagh, Todd Field, Catherine Martin and directing duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert were among those nominated in multiple categories , as were Ruben Östlund, Tony Kushner and Andy Nelson.

While many deserving films and talent were recognized with nods this year, there will always be projects and people who are snubbed. Among some of the Oscars’ biggest snubs were The Woman King star Viola Davis and director Gina Prince-Bythewood , Taylor Swift for her song “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing and Till director Chinonye Chukwu and star Danielle Deadwyler.

Prince-Bythewood and Chukwu were two female directors who were overlooked for best director nods, along with Women Talking ‘s Sarah Polley, She Said ‘s Maria Schrader and Aftersun ‘s Charlotte Wells.

That was a total of 7 Oscar wins for 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'

By Emily Olson

Best picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once won 7 of the 11 awards it was nominated for.

For a moment there earlier in the night, it looked like the more traditional All Quiet on the Western Front might give the inventive Everything Everywhere All at Once a run for the money. But in the end, the latter took home seven titles to All Quiet 's four — if that's not a sweep, we're not sure what is.

Here's the seven new titles for Everything Everywhere All at Once :

  • Best picture
  • Best actress, Michelle Yeoh
  • Best directing, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert
  • Best film editing, Paul Rogers
  • Best original screenplay, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert
  • Best actress in a supporting role, Jamie Lee Curtis
  • Best actor in a supporting role, Ke Huy Quan

The film fell short in costume design, original score and best song. ➡️Looking for a full list of winners? Head here.

A down year for Black nominees

By Eric Deggans

Even as Asian performers and filmmakers notched historic gains at this year’s Oscars, Black nominees fared poorly, with only Ruth E. Carter winning best costume design for her work on the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

This shutout for Black performers hasn’t happened since 2020 when the South Korean film Parasite won many key categories, and Cynthia Erivo was the only Black performer nominated.

It’s a sad reminder that the Oscars remain a space that often makes room for one non-white group among winners in its top categories, often represented by one successful film.

The best idea of the night was asking Harrison Ford to present the best picture Oscar

By Glen Weldon

Ke Huy Quan hugs actor Harrison Ford as he celebrates winning the Oscar for Best Picture for Everything Everywhere All at Once" onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California on March 12, 2023. )

Harrison Ford presented the best picture award — a canny move by the evening’s producers, who were clearly betting on an Everything Everywhere All at Once win, as it would reunite Ford and Quan, who starred together in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 39 years ago. The two shared a warm embrace.

The fantasy film about motherhood, love, googly eyes and the multiverse took home the Academy Award for best picture.

The film, directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — who’d picked up Oscars for original screenplay and directing earlier in the evening — was widely favored to win best picture. But the evening began with All Quiet on the Western Front racking up several Oscar statuettes, causing some to wonder if it might be the German war film’s night.

Everything Everywhere All at Once went into tonight’s ceremony with 11 nominations, of which it won seven, including best picture, director (Kwan and Scheinert), lead actress (Michelle Yeoh), supporting actress (Jamie Lee Curtis) supporting actor (Ke Huy Quan), original screenplay and editing.

It was a night of historic wins and safe jokes

For a show that aimed to give screen time to all of its 23 awards, this year’s Oscars proceeded at a brisk pace – just 40 minutes or so over the expected three-hour running time and filled with jokes from host Jimmy Kimmel about the length (even as the show ended, he cracked that viewers would be “joining Good Morning America , already in progress.”)

It was a ceremony that made history for the honors handed to Asian performers and filmmakers – thanks, in part, to the immense success of Everything Everywhere All at Once – and a party that was so set on honoring Hollywood that there was little fear anyone would derail the ceremony the way Will Smith did by slapping Chris Rock last year.

Perhaps because so many of the winners were expected – Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan from Everything Everywhere , especially – the show didn’t feel as unpredictable or daring as it could. Producers were often merciless about hustling winners off when their acceptance speeches got long. And Kimmel’s earnest words about honoring Hollywood ensured the onstage jokes would only go so far – as when he called Steven Spielberg and Seth Rogen the Joe and Hunter Biden of Hollywood.

It was a night of inspiring, historic wins and safe jokes - just the kind of evening the Academy was likely hoping for after the bedlam of last year’s ceremony.

Brendan Fraser completes the Brenaissance with an Oscar win

By Stephen Thompson

Brendan Fraser’s win concluded an Oscar-night shutout for The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis , Aftersun and Living .

Fraser, whose unlikely career trajectory has included Encino Man , George of the Jungle and a long hiatus marked by health issues, completed his comeback Sunday night, winning best actor for The Whale . The film drew harsh criticism for its portrayal of a 600-pound gay shut-in, but Fraser’s performance was strong enough to make him an Oscar winner.

The ceremony is over, but the NPR after-party is just getting started

The final credits may be rolling, but we're sticking around a bit longer to parse tonight's big moments.

So grab a refill on your popcorn or drinks (or both!) and stay with us.

'Everything Everywhere All at Once' wins best picture

Producer Jonathan Wang accepts the Oscar for Best Picture for Everything Everywhere All at Once onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Calif., on March 12, 2023.

Here were the nominees it beat out:

  • All Quiet on the Western Front
  • Avatar: The Way of Water
  • The Banshees of Inisherin
  • The Fabelmans
  • Top Gun: Maverick

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert win best director for 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'

Daniel Scheinert, left, and Dan Kwan accept the Best Director award for Everything Everywhere All at Once onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, Calif.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are taking home another award for Everything Everywhere All at Once , this time for best director.

Here are the nominees that the pair beat out: Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisherin, Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans , Todd Field for Tár and Ruben Ostlund for Triangle of Sadness.

This In Memoriam segment had something extra

Besides a legitimately moving intro from a choked-up John Travolta, who was clearly going through it, having lost his dear friends Olivia Newton-John and Kirstie Alley this year.

If you noticed, the producers decided to add a small Oscar statuette next to the names of those people who’d won an Academy Award in their lifetime.

The In Memoriam segment always flirts with tackiness, given the audience’s determination to cheer for the biggest names. But this felt … kinda gross, no?

'Everything Everywhere All at Once' wins award for best editing

That's another award for best picture nominee Everything Everywhere All at Once: best film editing.

Everything Everywhere All at Once beat out nominees The Banshees of Inisherin ; Elvis; Tár; and Top Gun: Maverick.

Lenny Kravitz performs for the in-memoriam segment

As is tradition at every Oscars ceremony, audiences are remembering the those in the film industry who passed away in the last year.

"They've touched our hearts, they've made us smile, and became dear friends, who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to," said presenter John Travolta, who remembered his friend and former co-star, Olivia Newton-John.

Lenny Kravitz provided the sound-track for the segment, performing "Calling all Angels".

This thing could be so much longer

Consider: They’re introducing tonight’s best picture nominees with an offscreen announcer.

In years past, that job has been done by presenters. Actors who walk out, pause, engage in stiff presenter banter, and then introduce the best picture nominees.

It seems like a small tweak but it’s easily shaving, what, at least ten minutes off this broadcast?

'Top Gun: Maverick' wins Oscar for best sound

Top Gun: Maverick won the Oscar for best sound.

With its win, the film beat fellow category nominees Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, The Batman and All Quiet on the Western Front.

Who gets played off, and who doesn’t?

It happens every Oscars — enthusiastic winners get played off before they can finish their speeches. Unfortunate but understandable; the producers are just trying to keep things tight.

But there’s generally an effort made to seem egalitarian, or at the very least, consistent.

Not so tonight. Based on this year’s broadcast, here’s a couple things to keep in mind to avoid the hook, when you make your Oscars speech.

1. Be a team of one.  Producers cued the orchestra tonight when the winners for makeup and hairstyling, documentary short and visual effects tried to hand off the mic to a second speaker.

2. Be an actor, writer, director or composer. It’s one of the cruelest ironies of the Oscars that the folks who win in categories like those listed above — who don’t have regular access to huge platforms — are the most likely to get played off. It’s a big deal for them! Maybe the biggest of their lives! Let them speak!

Hang in there, Jimmy ...

Jimmy Kimmel onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, Calif.

Midway through the Oscars, host Jimmy Kimmel seemed a little low on energy, constantly cracking jokes about how long the ceremony was and noting at one moment, “this point in the show kinda makes you miss the slapping, huh?”

Still, he managed a few cute moments, walking onstage with a donkey he said was from the film The Banshees of Inisherin and walking into the audience to ask questions of stars like Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

He asked Yousafzai, “As the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history, I was wondering, do you think Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine?”

Her answer was both wise and TV savvy: “I only talk about peace.”

Cheer up, Jimmy; you’ve only got another four hours or so to go.

Women Talking wins Oscar for best writing (adapted screenplay)

Sarah Polley accepts the best adapted screenplay award for Women Talking onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, Calif.

Women Talking has bested Living, All Quiet on the Western Front, Top Gun: Maverick and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

'Everything Everywhere All at Once' wins Oscar for writing (original screenplay)

Everything Everywhere All at Once won the Oscar for writing (original screenplay).

With this win, Everything Everywhere All at Once beat Triangle of Sadness, Tar, The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans.

Rihanna performs ‘Lift Me Up’ with an orchestra

Rihanna performs onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, Calif.

Rihanna closed out Oscar night’s best original song performances with a stately take on “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , aided by an orchestra and a choir. Unlike Lady Gaga, who transformed her maximalist movie anthem “Hold My Hand” into something intimate and contained, Rihanna and her accompanists gave “Lift Me Up” a grandness it wore well. It’s still not a terribly eventful song, but she leaned into it.

Rihanna has had a big 2023: She’s already performed at the Super Bowl, announced her pregnancy and performed at the Oscars. Here’s hoping a long-awaited album is next in the queue.

'Avatar: The Way of Water' wins Oscar for best visual effects

Avatar: The Way of Water

Avatar: The Way of Water won the Oscar for best visual effects.

With its win, Avatar: The Way of Water beat The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick, All Quiet on the Western Front and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Here's the award count so far:

Does it feel like things are heating up a bit for All Quiet on the Western Front ? The war movie has just pulled ahead of the pack, but we're only just halfway through the awards, with 10 awards still to go.

Here's how the best picture nominees have fared so far:

  • All Quiet on the Western Front — 4
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once — 2
  • No awards yet for the 8 others

➡️If you need a complete list of winners, head here.

For ‘Hold My Hand,’ Lady Gaga dials it way back

Lady Gaga performs onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, Calif.

Clad in a black T-shirt, with closeups suggesting that she’d recently wiped off lipstick, Gaga leaned into intimacy — an intriguing approach for such a maximalist movie song. This isn’t Gaga’s first Oscars rodeo (she won best original song in 2019 for “Shallow,” from A Star Is Born ), so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she made a moment of it.

If you want a sense of what Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand” might sound if she’d stripped it down for the Tiny Desk — and, as a side note, that can happen if she wishes — her Oscars performance provided a clear approximation.

All Quiet on the Western Front wins Oscar for best music (original score)

With its fifth win of the evening, All Quiet on the Western Front beat Babylon, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans.

'All Quiet on the Western Front' wins Oscar for best production design

All Quiet on the Western Front won the Oscar for best production design.

In its fourth win of the evening, All Quiet on the Western Front beat Elvis, Babylon, The Fabelmans and Avatar: The Way of Waster.

Ruth Carter’s win was historic

By Aisha Harris

Fun fact, in case you missed it: when Ruth Carter took home the costume award for Wakanda Forever earlier in the evening, she became the first Black woman to win more than one Oscar. Her previous win was for Black Panther , and that win was also historic — she was the first Black person to win in that category in 2019.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse wins Oscar for best short film (animated)

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse won the Oscar for best short film (animated).

It beat fellow nominees My Year of Dicks, An Ostrich Told Me the World is Fake And I Think I Believe It, The Flying Sailor and Ice Merchants.

'The Elephant Whisperers' wins Oscar for best documentary short film

The Elephant Whisperers won the Oscar for best documentary short film.

It beat out fellow nominees How Do You Measure A Year?, Stranger at the Gate, Haulout and The Martha Mitchell Effect.

‘Naatu Naatu’ gets its big production number at the Oscars

Dancers perform 'Naatu Naatu' from RRR onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, Calif.

Performed by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, “Naatu Naatu” might have been even more welcome later in the ceremony. But its big onstage Oscars moment — and the standing ovation that followed — gave the telecast a boost of joy and enthusiasm that’s always welcome.

For anyone who viewed its viral video or the many TikTok dances it spawned, Sunday night’s performance of RRR ’s “Naatu Naatu” provided one of Oscar night’s most anticipated moments. The film’s stars (Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) weren’t part of the production, but the dancers on hand effectively matched the film’s impeccable and boundless energy.

There’s a whole lotta ads in this Oscars ceremony

A 3-ish minute sneak peek at the upcoming remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid introduced by its stars Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy. A “salute” to the Warner Bros. company. A plug for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. So far, these have been shoehorned into the Oscars telecast. Yet, in his opening monologue, Jimmy Kimmel cracked a joke about how the viewers who rallied for all the award categories to be included in the broadcast – unlike last year – would be to blame for the ceremony running many, many hours long. Hmm…

Spielberg on Spielberg

By Bob Mondello

Gabriel LaBelle plays the young filmmaker Sammy — a lightly fictionalized version of Spielberg — in The Fabelmans.

Although The Fabelmans is a lightly fictionalized version of filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s life, it is not a tale he’s regaling audiences with for the first time.

“I’ve told this story in parts and parcels all through my career,” he said at the Golden Globes.

And indeed, armed with The Fabelmans as a key to unlock the code of his other pictures, it's easy for audiences to tease out what he means. From scenes of clowning around with a Super 8 camera and props in a closet that look a lot like Elliott and his otherworldly guest in E.T., to battlefield epics inspired by his dad’s war stories, to fractured families much like Spielberg’s own (his parents divorced while he was still in his teens), to tales of Jewish family life and encounters with antisemitism that informed the making of films like Munich and Schindler’s List , the arc of his career comes into focus.

Plenty of filmmakers have found inspiration in their own stories, but Spielberg has made The Fabelmans more than just a sentimental self-portrait. Instead, he’s given audiences a glimpse of a filmmaker's childhood as a filmmaker -- a sort of master class in how heart affects art.

Read more about how Spielberg has been telling his story all along — if you were paying attention.

'All Quiet on the Western Front' wins Oscar for best international feature film

All Quiet on the Western Front won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film.

All Quiet on the Western Front snagged its third win of the evening. The film beat out E0, The Quiet Girl, Close and Argentina, 1985.

The Makeup and Hairstyling award for ‘The Whale’ feels icky

Brendan Fraser plays Charlie in The Whale.

We talked about it more in-depth in our Pop Culture Happy Hour episode dedicated to The Whale . But awarding this movie feels like the conversations around Hollywood’s treatment of fat people and actors still have a long way to go.

The award for best makeup and hairstyling went to The Whale , which isn’t exactly a surprise. Much – if not most – of the press around the movie has been focused on star Brendan Fraser’s “ transformation ” into his character Charlie, a 600-pound house-bound recluse. The win feels more than a bit icky, however, considering the fact that Fraser had to undergo the transformation at all; ‘Why didn’t they hire an actual fat actor for this role?’ is a question many of us have asked. (Along with, ‘Why did this movie have to be made in the first place?’)

'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' wins Oscar for best costume design

Ruth E. Carter accepts the best costume design award for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, Calif.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won the Oscar for best costume design.

Ruth E. Carter's designs beat out those of Elvis, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Babylon.

Revisit Carter's Fresh Air interview about her work on the Black Panther movies.

The Whale wins Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling

The Whale wins Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling.

The Whale beat Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, The Batman, All Quiet on the Western Front and Elvis.

‘This Is a Life’ performance swaps Mitski for Stephanie Hsu

Stephanie Hsu performs onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, Calif.

In a performance that embraced chaos to match the movie that spawned it, Son Lux and David Byrne performed best original song nominee “This Is a Life” with a special guest: actress Stephanie Hsu, who stood in for an absent Mitski.

Vocally, it was a bit all over the place, as seemingly thousands of Twitter users typed “where is mitski” into their search bars simultaneously. But it was, appropriately enough, a visual feast: Byrne wore hot-dog fingers, dancers wore googly eyes on their foreheads, Raccacoonie made an appearance, the works.

'All Quiet on the Western Front' wins Oscar for best cinematography

All Quiet on the Western Front won the Oscar for best cinematography.

It beat out fellow nominees including Empire of Light, Tar, Elvis and Bardo, False Chronicles of a Handful of Truths.

‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ looks like a juggernaut so far

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Everything Everywhere All at Once is no sure thing in other categories. Lead-actress nominee Michelle Yeoh is up against Tár powerhouse Cate Blanchett, among others, and the film’s directors, Daniels, are up against the likes of Steven Spielberg. But this could be one of those years in which one film dominates the night.

If you’re looking for an overarching theme from tonight’s Academy Awards, Jamie Lee Curtis’ best supporting actress win portends a big one: This is already gearing up to be an enormous night for Everything Everywhere All at Once .

Ke Huy Quan has long been a frontrunner for best supporting actor, so that moment was no surprise. But Angela Bassett was widely considered a likely winner for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever . Curtis’ win — against, among others, co-star Stephanie Hsu, with whom she was splitting votes — suggests a deep well of support for the film, which was already leading the Oscars field with 11 nominations.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ wins best animated feature

Guillermo del Toro accepts the award for best animated feature film for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, Calif.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio , an ambitious stop-motion retelling of the classic children’s story, won best animated feature at Sunday’s Academy Awards. It’s the third Oscar for del Toro, who won twice for The Shape of Water in 2018.

The film, which expands on the classic story to include deeper references to grief and fascism, had performed well across this awards season and bested a field rounded out by Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, The Sea Beast and Turning Red .

In accepting the award for Pinocchio , del Toro issued a plea for audiences and awards to take the film’s medium seriously, imploring the Oscars crowd to “keep animation in the conversation."

An Irish Goodbye wins Oscar for Best Short Film (Live Action)

An Irish Goodbye won the Oscar for Best Short Film (Live Action).

The film beat out fellow nominees including The Red Suitcase, Night Ride, The Pupils, and Ivalu.

Navalny wins Best Documentary (Feature) at the Oscars

Daniel Roher's Navalny won Best Documentary (Feature) at the Oscars.

Navalny beat out four other nominees: All That Breathes, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed , Fire of Love, and A House Made of Splinters .

Diane Warren and Sofia Carson perform best original song nominee, "Applause"

Cara Delevingne introduced actress Sofia Carson and the 14-time Academy Award nominee Diane Warren for the first song performance of the night.

Carson sang "Applause" from Tell it Like a Woman .

Kimmel kicks off the Oscars

Jimmy Kimmel speaks onstage during the 95th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, Calif.

Host Jimmy Kimmel offered a slyly naughty, yet ultimately pro-Hollywood monologue at the Oscars, joking that superstar director Steven Spielberg had to be high on something when he directed E.T.

“You mean to tell me you were sober when you made a movie about an alien that eats Reese’s Pieces every day?”

He poked at Will Smith’s slap of Chris Rock last year by joking: “If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during the show, you will be awarded the Oscar for best actor and permitted to give a 19-minute long speech.”

He also drew sustained applause by noting that producers decided awards in all categories would be presented live again – which didn’t happen last year – warning that winners who speak too long would be danced offstage by performers from the movie RRR .

“No complaining about how long the show is,” Kimmel cracked. “I saw all your movies. Now it’s my turn to make you sit in a theater for three and a half hours.”

2023 was a record year for Asian actors at the Oscars

Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh appear onstage during the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Feb. 26, 2023 in Los Angeles, Calif.

No matter who takes home the gold statuettes tonight, 2023 will be remembered as a watershed year for Asian actors at the Oscars.

Four Oscar nominations for Asian performers in a single year is a record. Three of them – Michelle Yeoh, who is competing for best actress, Ke Huy Quan (best supporting actor) and Stephanie Hsu (best supporting actress) – play the laundromat-owning multiverse-hopping family in Everything Everywhere All at Once . Also in the supporting actress category is Hong Chau, who plays the best friend of Brendan Fraser's title character in The Whale .

While there are also Asian directors and screenwriters among this year’s nominees, in other respects, 2023 represents a step back from diversity for the Motion Picture Academy. With no Black actors nominated for lead performances and no women feature directors nominated, there are still areas of the multiverse that need exploring.

Check out our interviews with Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh and read more about this record nominations year.

A last-minute menu for your Oscar party

There isn't much to the recipe for Triangle(s) of Sadness. Above, a Doritos display in a Target store Los Angeles.

It’s here at last. Hollywood’s Biggest Night TM , when The Stars Come Out to Shine TM . Tinseltown’s Annual Tribute to Dreams Made of Shadow and Light TM . The Gay Super Bowl TM .

Which is all well and good, but you’ve got people coming over and you need to supply them with enough grub to fuel them through an opening monologue, 23 categories (each one of which comes factory-installed with cringeworthy banter and a speech), one Thalberg , five best song performances, one In Memoriam segment and an endless succession of pointless, time-eating montages.

It’ll be a long haul, but if you take our advice, your guests will leave with full bellies at the end of the broadcast, or when the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard, whichever comes first.

All Quiet on the Western Runts This is just a bowl of that hard, shiny, tooth-chipping candy shaped like fruit. Be sure to provide an empty, smaller bowl next to the bowl you serve the candy in so that your guests can discard the gross banana ones, otherwise you’ll be finding them stuffed between your couch cushions and dumped behind your ficus for weeks.

Avatar: The Whey of Water Fitness-oriented guests who turn up their noses at your other offerings will be grateful for this blueberry smoothie made with plant-based protein powder.

The Banshees of Inisherbert To truly capture the tragicomic melancholy of McDonagh’s film, this frozen dessert is prepared with cream, egg whites, Guinness and despair.

Tagliattelvis  Serve this pasta either with a sauce of bacon fat and peanut butter, or all by its lonesome, tonight.

Everything Everywhere All at Bundts Make many different cakes using the same Bundt pan but using wildly different recipes, at least one of which should be a glamorous movie star. Googly eyes recommended but not necessary.

The Fabelmints A cut-glass candy dish of soft pillow mints alongside a tiny screen showing a faded projection of those same mints, on a loop.

Steak TÁRtare Raw ground beef with onions, capers and Worcestershire sauce, topped with an egg yolk. When you ask your guests who wants seconds, they’ll shout, “Me, too!”

Top Gum: Maverick They say you shouldn’t serve gum at a party. Throw that rule book in the wastebasket, you square-jawed iconoclast!

Triangle(s) of Sadness Don’t bother with a bowl. Just rip open a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos, leave it on the table and call it a day.

Women Tal-King Crab Legs Serve steamed, but make sure to keep the legs modestly covered under thick wool at all times.

First Timers Club

By Linda Holmes

Colin Farrell plays a sweet-souled farmer whose best (human) friend abruptly dumps him in The Banshees of Inisherin.

Of the 20 nominees in acting categories this year, 16 are first-timers. Only Cate Blanchett, Michelle Williams, Judd Hirsch and Angela Bassett have been nominated before. Only Blanchett has ever won (twice).

The flood of newcomers includes the entire best actor field — Austin Butler for Elvis , Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin , Brendan Fraser for The Whale , Bill Nighy for Living , and Paul Mescal for Aftersun . Butler and Fraser have won most of the so-called precursor awards; Butler won the Golden Globe, Fraser won the Screen Actors Guild Award.

There are new nominees who have been around for long enough that their lack of prior nominations feels surprising, like Nighy or Jamie Lee Curtis. But there are also some who are much newer to the scene, like Butler and Stephanie Hsu. And, too, there are comeback stories in both Fraser and Ke Huy Quan, who have both been welcomed as evidence that perseverance can work, even in a punishing industry.

A preview of what’s to come tonight

History’s already been made at the 95th Academy Awards, no matter who takes home the gold statues.

  • More Asian actors have been nominated than in any year in Oscars history.
  • 91-year-old composer John Williams is not only the oldest Oscar nominee ever, with 53 career nods he’s also Oscar’s most-nominated living artist.
  • Steven Spielberg is the only director to be nominated in each of six decades.
  • Angela Bassett is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe performer to be nominated (after 22 years and 31 movies).

Of course, history was made last year, too – the first deaf best actor ( Troy Kotsur ), the first best picture win for a streaming service ( CODA ) – only to be overshadowed by a less salutary, if also history-making “Oscar Slap.”

With Will Smith now banned from the ceremony and protocols in place for handling problems, a repeat is unlikely. But viewership is expected to bounce back, both because of the slap’s notoriety, and because the year’s two biggest blockbusters, Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water , are nominated for best picture.

Here’s a prediction: The winner will be…

… announced after viewers on the East Coast have gone to bed.

Where to find all the looks from the (not) red carpet

Hollywood's biggest stars are making their way into Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre for tonight's ceremony. But in a break with the 62-year tradition, they're walking down a champagne-colored carpet.

What happened to the red color? The organizers said they wanted the space to feel mellow, like walking on a beach at sunset, according to a report from The New York Times.

Is it throwing everyone off their fashion game? Decide for yourself — here's NPR's list of the most memorable looks.

How to watch the Oscars tonight

By Teresa Xie

A view of the podium and the Oscar statue before the announcement of the 95th Academy Award nominations at Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Jan. 24, 2023 in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Here's everything you need to know about the 95th Academy Awards ceremony:

When are the Oscar Awards this year?

The 95th Academy Awards ceremony will air on Sunday, March 12 at 8 p.m. E.T. with a red carpet pre-show beginning at 6:30 p.m. E.T. The ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

How do I watch them? What if I don't have cable?

ABC will exclusively broadcast the Oscars live. Cable subscribers can tune into the ceremony on their TV, or livestream it on abc.com and through the ABC app.

Don't have cable? You can watch the ceremony through streaming services including Hulu + Live TV, fuboTV, Sling TV, and YouTube TV. Many of them have free trials!

What should I expect from this year's ceremony?

Unlike last year's ceremony, which saw three hosts, Jimmy Kimmel will be the only one leading the 2023 award proceedings. This will be the comedian and late-night talk show host's third time emceeing the event.

This year, all 23 categories will also be broadcasted live. Last year, the academy made a controversial decision to present eight categories (film editing, original score, production design, makeup and hairstyling, animated short, documentary short, live action short and sound mixing) off air – taping them before the broadcast and editing highlights into the show.

Who is performing?

Following her Superbowl halftime show, Rihanna will sing her Oscar-nominated song "Lift Me Up" from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever . Sofia Carson and Diane Warren will take the stage to perform their Oscar-nominated song "Applause" from Tell It Like a Woman . David Byrne, Son Lux, and Stephanie Hsu will perform their Oscar-nominated song "This Is a Life" from Everything Everywhere All at Once . And RRR 's "Naatu Naatu" will be performed live by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava.

Who are the favored contenders?

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's Everything Everywhere All at Once leads with 11 nominations. Following with nine nods each are Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin and Netflix's World War I film All Quiet on the Western Front .

Angela Bassett's supporting actress nomination for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the Marvel franchise's first Oscar nomination in an acting category. And Michelle Yeoh makes history as the first Asian-identifying nominee for best actress.

The full list of nominations is here.

2023 Oscars: Watch scenes of the best supporting actress nominees

By David Morgan

March 7, 2023 / 8:10 AM EST / CBS News

Watch scenes for the performances nominated in the category of best supporting actress at the  95th annual Academy Awards , as well as interviews with the stars at the links below.

The Oscars  will be presented on March 12 .

Angela Bassett, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever"

Angela Bassett (whose credits include "Boyz n the Hood," "Malcolm X," "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," "Strange Days," and "Mission Impossible: Fallout") received her first Oscar nomination for her starring role as singer Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic "What's Love Got to Do With It." Three decades later, she became the first actor to receive an Academy Award nomination for a performance in a Marvel superhero film.

In "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," Bassett reprises her role as Ramonda, Queen Mother of Wakanda, mother of the late T'Challa, who seeks to protect her nation and the power it possesses through its exclusive control of vibranium.

In this scene, she strips General Okoye (Danai Gurira) of her power, following a fateful confrontation with a race of superhumans desperate to acquire vibranium.

Bassett won the Golden Globe for her performance.

"Queen Ramonda, for me, is just, at its core, a representation of the strong women that I've had in my life who've raised me, of the strong women I see, my love for them, my appreciation of them," Bassett told "CBS Mornings."

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" is playing in theaters, available on demand and on home video, and streaming via Disney+ .

Hong Chau, "The Whale"

In Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale," Chau plays Liz, a nurse who is caring for a morbidly-obese English teacher, Charlie (played by Oscar-nominee Brendan Fraser). Liz is practically the reclusive man's only friend, the only person who could possibly convince him to get the medical attention he so obviously needs. She is also protective of him, with regard to a visiting missionary who is intent upon "saving" Charlie.

In this scene she examines Charlie after he experiences chest pains, with an air of patience and tired resignation. But we will learn that not only is her connection to Charlie closer than that of a caretaker; Liz also learns that she has been lied to by Charlie about his money, which he'd planned to leave to his estranged daughter.

Chau's credits include "Inherent Vice," "Big Little Lies," "Homecoming," "Watchmen," "Driveways," and "Downsizing" (for which she was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award). She'd actually stepped away from acting, having recently had a baby, but Aronofsky had written the part of Liz for her (even though the script didn't specify the character as being Asian).

"The Whale" got Chau back before the camera, and she has continued with roles in "Showing Up" (opposite Michelle Williams) and "The Menu" (with Ralph Fiennes).

"The Whale" is Chau's first Academy Award nomination.

"The Whale" is playing in theaters, and is available on demand and on home video.

Kerry Condon, "The Banshees of Inisherin"

Kerry Condon ("Rome," "Better Call Saul") won the BAFTA Award for her performance as Siobhán, the sister of Pádraic (Colin Farrell), who acts as a go-between in her brother's efforts to make amends and re-establish his broken friendship with Colm (Brendan Gleeson). At the same time, she is looking beyond the tiny island off the Irish coast where she lives with her brother, looking for a future for herself on the mainland.

In this scene, Siobhán addresses a very unwelcome overnight guest, Dominic ( Oscar-nominee Barry Keoghan ), who questions why she'd never gotten married.

In this scene she gently lets down Dominic and his romantic aspirations:

Condon had a long history working with Irish playwright and filmmaker Martin McDonagh, appearing in his plays "The Lieutenant of Inishmore" and "The Cripple of Inishmaan," as well as his 2017 film "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri."

She told "CBS Mornings" that while she initially thought her character in "Banshees" wouldn't be as much fun as the roles she played in McDonagh's plays, she decided that "it was actually a bit harder, because it was for a more mature girl. Like, I don't think I could have done this if I was 18 or 19. I needed all of these years of, like, learning things about life and disappointments and sadness."

This is her first Academy Award nomination.

"The Banshees of Inisherin"  is playing in theaters, available on demand and home video, and streaming on  HBO Max

Jamie Lee Curtis, "Everything Everywhere All at Once"

She leaped to fame as the star of the 1978 shocker "Halloween," and quickly became the movies' "Scream Queen," in such horror films as "The Fog," "Prom Night" and "Terror Train," and in hard-edged thrillers like "Blue Steel." But Jamie Lee Curtis' greatest gifts are in comedy, as evidenced by her sprightly turns in such hits as "Trading Places," "A Fish Called Wanda," "True Lies," "Freaky Friday" and "Knives Out."

In "Everything Everywhere All at Once," Curtis plays Deirdre Beaubeirdre, a divorced IRS auditor investigating the mess of a tax return submitted by Evelyn and Waymond Wang (Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan ).

Curtis would play variations of her character in the alternate worlds that are revealed in The Daniels' multiverse action-comedy, including a love interest for Evelyn Wang, in a universe where they both sport hot dog fingers. (Consequently, Deirdre must play the piano with her toes.)

Playing Beaubeirdre, Curtis got to let it all hang out, literally. "I know women like Deirdre Beaubeirdre," she told "Sunday Morning." "I think we all do. We all have had so many disappointments, so many opportunities that then break your heart. And I think that Deirdre's heart has just been broken. I know her. And I love her."

Curtis won the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Awards for her performance. This is her first Academy Award nomination.

"Everything Everywhere All at Once"  is now in theaters, and  available on demand and home video , and streaming on  Showtime

Stephanie Hsu, "Everything Everywhere All at Once"

Stephanie Hsu (whose credits include "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," "The Path," and "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings") stars as Joy, a young queer woman struggling in her relationship with her mother, laundromat owner Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh). In addition to the mother-daughter tensions that are exacerbated by her Asian immigrant's traumatic past, Evelyn also finds herself pitted against a nihilistic manifestation of Joy from an alternate universe.

In this scene, Joy transforms into Jobu Tupaki, a powerful being who threatens to destroy every universe.

In this scene, the main universe Evelyn reconciles with Joy, who fears that, unlike what other multiverse versions of Joy may offer her mother, she is only Joy: "Here, all we'll get are a few specks of time where any of this actually makes any sense."

"I think one of my favorite things about 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' is that it's about so many things, that it's somehow able to transcend identity politics," Hsu told CBS Bay Area  station KPIX. "That it is centered around a Chinese family, but it launches into the multiverse, so many things are happening all at once, that you forget that you're focusing on a Chinese immigrant family."

This marks the first Academy Award nomination for Hsu.

The 2023 Oscars proceeded with the usual opening pomp and grand celebrity fashion show, as expected from Hollywood’s biggest night. The red carpet was full of wild questions, Jimmy Kimmel opened the night with expected slap jokes , then Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis won the audience’s heart with their moving, emotional acceptance speeches for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. David Byrne donned a pair of hot-dog-finger gloves while performing an original song from Everything Everywhere All At Once , alongside Mitski. And Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava tore up the stage with their performance of “Naatu Naatu” from S. S. Rajamouli’s Oscar-nominated Indian action epic RRR .

If you didn’t catch the three-hour-plus broadcast — or just want to relive some of the night’s brightest and weirdest moments — we’ve rounded up the best, the funniest, the most touching, and most exhilarating moments from tonight’s Academy Awards ceremony.

Let’s get down to it!

Questlove shows off his diamond-encrusted Crocs

Close-up shot of Questlove’s diamond-encrusted Crocs

This year at the Oscars, plenty of attendees showed up in white or cream-accented outfits to complement the ceremony’s extravagant pale entranceway, nicknamed the “Champagne Carpet.” Not Questlove, though. The Oscar-winning director and iconic joint frontman of The Roots showed up in nothing short of diamond-encrusted Crocs, stating that he’s “just been choosing comfort for years now,” and he’s showing up to “shine his light.”

I just got one question, though: What are those ?

Hugh Grant is here, and man, he is so over it

Hugh Grant #Oscars pic.twitter.com/WOGQAdDqoj — bruce (@BruceJVail) March 12, 2023

Did you know that Hugh Grant was in Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion ? It’s true, he makes a brief (and I mean brief ) appearance at the beginning, as Phillip, partner to detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). He’s there for like, all of five seconds.

Anyway, Grant was asked what it was like to film the movie, and whether he had fun. His answer: Ehhh?

The Snyder bros are back, and they are being extremely normal

Plane flying over the #Oscars red carpet right now with a banner that reads: #OscarsCheerMoment Zack Snyder’s Justice League pic.twitter.com/PYJn9kTbEW — Jarett Wieselman (@JarettSays) March 12, 2023

Remember when Zack Snyder’s Justice League (not to be confused with 2017’s Justice League ) won the coveted #OscarsCheersMoment prize at last year’s Academy Awards ceremony ? No? Well, the Snyder bros of the world sure do, and they’re clutching that “W” hard, like the prickly armored vice-grip of Steppenwolf. Somebody even went so far as to fly a plane trailing a banner over the Oscars red carpet, just to remind folks that it happened.

Jimmy Kimmel mocks the Nicole Kidman AMC ad

Nicole Kidman seated in her viral 2020 AMC ad

We come to the 95th Academy Awards ceremony for magic. We come to laugh, to cry, to care. That indescribable feeling we get when Jimmy Kimmel parachutes from the ceiling onto the stage and proceeds to riff on Nicole Kidman’s viral AMC ad, expressing gratitude that she’s free from that “abandoned theater she’s been trapped in for two years,” and snickering about how the ad urges people who are already in the theater to go to the theater. Because we need that — all of us.

Naatu Naatu dancers pulled Kimmel off stage

Getting played off by the Jaws theme song? Pssh, been there, done that. This year, Kimmel claimed, any Oscar winner who went overboard on their acceptance speech would get Naatu Naatu’d off the stage, which he promptly demonstrated.

Ke Huy Quan wins the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor

Ke Huy Quan accepted the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance as Waymond Wang in the Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once. Quan delivered a moving acceptance speech dedicated to his mother and his wife Echo, to roaring applause, recalling the story of his time in a refugee camp in Hong Kong as a child, and his arrival in America.

Jamie Lee Curtis dedicating her win to her parents — because Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh never won an Oscar

Jamie Lee Curtis accepted the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Deirdre Beaubeirdre in the Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once — the first nomination and first win in her 46-year career. She dedicated her award to her father Tony Curtis and her mother Janet Leigh, who never won Oscars, but were nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, for their performances in 1958’s The Defiant Ones and 1960’s Psycho.

The live-action-short winner sings “Happy birthday”

Tom Berkley and Ross White’s An Irish Goodbye won the award for Best Live Action Short at the 95th Academy Awards. Berkley took the opportunity to celebrate the birthday of the film’s co-star James Martin, by dedicating half his winner’s speech slot to a sing-along rendition of “Happy Birthday to You.”

David Byrne in hot-dog fingers

Stephanie Hsu and David Byrne took to the stage for a performance of “This Is A Life” from the Everything Everywhere All At Once soundtrack, with the latter donning a hot-dog-finger gloves to celebrate the occasion. That’s not all: Raccacoonie even made a surreal, glow-eyed appearance! Wow, all the stars really are out here tonight!

The donkey from Banshees of Inisherin hits the stage

Following a commercial break, Jimmy Kimmel brought out Jenny, the donkey that starred alongside Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin , describing Jenny as a “certified emotional support donkey” while encouraging her to thank Gleeson for letting her eat his finger. Awww!

[ Ed. note: The donkey seen on stage is confirmed to not be Jenny the Donkey, but in fact an imposter! Booooo!]

It's official: I've had it confirmed that the donkey on stage with Jimmy Kimmel was NOT Jenny the donkey. Sorry to disappoint my fellow Jenny fans. My source informs me that "Jenny is still relaxing in Ireland" #Oscars https://t.co/ax0cbR1Xcy — Alex Ritman (@alexritman) March 13, 2023

Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava perform “Naatu Naatu,” confirmed as a “total banger”

Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava — the playback singers who performed “Naatu Naatu” in S.S. Rajamouli ’s Indian action drama RRR in place of the film’s stars, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan — took to the stage for a performance of the song, complete with all the exhausting-looking dance choreography from the movie itself. Naturally, this one later won the Best Song Oscar.

Cocaine Bear showed up

Elizabeth Banks and Cocaine Bear on the 2023 Oscars stage

There he is. Cocaine Bear.

Lady Gaga’s emotional performance of her Top Gun: Maverick song

Lady Gaga changed out of her champagne-carpet duds and into a plain black T-shirt and torn jeans for a passionate, intimate performance of her original song “Hold My Hand” from the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack. Gaga’s performance was particularly striking for its otherwise sparse presentation and dynamic cinematography. The performance ended with a touching dedication to Top Gun director Tony Scott, who died in 2012.

Hugh Grant calls his face “basically a scrotum”

This is the Hugh Grant we came to see. He points at Andi Macdowell and says. "Still stunning," and then to himself and says, "a scrotum." #Oscars pic.twitter.com/5E1GazCA8a — Lance Ulanoff (@LanceUlanoff) March 13, 2023

Hugh Grant certainly seem to lighten up as the night went along, joking with his speech partner Andie Macdowell about the importance of regularly applying moisturizer while presenting the award for Best Production Design. Grant went so far as to compare Macdowell as “still stunning” thanks to her regular skin routine, meanwhile comparing himself to “a scrotum.” Hey, if you can’t laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?

Malala declines to weigh in on Spitgate 2021

Midway through the show, Kimmel took to the aisles to ask “viewer-submitted questions” of some of the audience’s most distinguished guests, starting with Malala Yousafzai. The Pakistani education activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate was asked for her take on whether Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine while promoting Olivia Wilde’s 2022 psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling . Obviously taken aback by the brazen silliness of the question, Yousafzai curtly yet politely replied, “I only talk about peace.” Now that is what we should expect from a Nobel Peace Prize recipient.

The Daniels deliver a frantic top-speed double speech

Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (aka the Daniels) accepted the award for Best Original Screenplay for Everything Everywhere All At Once by trading turns at the mic and trying to cram in as much speech as possible. Scheinert pretended he was about to call out all the mean teachers who gave him detention, then thanked the ones who changed his life instead. Kwan professed his love of storytelling amid a touching admission of imposter syndrome. The speech read as if they were afraid — like so many nominees before them — that they might be overlooked in the other categories, and wouldn’t get a chance back onstage, so they had to make the most of their moment. Little did they know.

Sarah Polley wins, Frances McDormand looms

Sarah Polley’s making this moving speech and you’ve just stoic Frances McDormand staring down on her the whole time #Oscars pic.twitter.com/KgzJ0X2nd9 — Will Mavity (@mavericksmovies) March 13, 2023

A spectre is haunting Sarah Polley — the spectre of Francis McDormand. The director took to the stage to accept the award for Best Adapted Screenplay on behalf of her 2022 film Women Talking .

Polley delivered a moving speech about the film’s message about people’s power to disagree while still coming together to build a better future. But she wasn’t the only center of attention. A gigantic screenshot of Frances McDormand, who starred in the film, loomed over Polley’s shoulder with an expression that bore a striking resemblance to Death from Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal by way of the Engineer from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus . Beautiful speech, but seriously, WTF was that about?

RRR composer gives his winner’s speech in song

RRR composer M. M. Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose took to the stage to accept the award for Best Original Song for “Naatu Naatu.” Keeravaani, who professed his love for The Carpenters, sung his acceptance speech to the tune of their 1972 song “Top of the World.”

The Daniels return and win Best Director

The Daniels took to the Oscars stage to receive yet another award, this time for Best Director. Scheinert took the opportunity to thank his parents for encouraging his creativity, while Kwan delivered a passionate speech on the collaborative nature of genius and the inherent greatness within every person.

Brendan Fraser mixes whale metaphors in his Best Actor speech

Brendan Fraser accepted the award for Best Actor for his starring role in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale . Through tears, Fraser thanked Aronofsky for “throwing him a creative lifeline” and praised the cast and crew of The Whale alongside the other nominees, all via a series of extended whale metaphors. Fraser’s victory was the brightest spot in a controversial film , marking the end of a very long and difficult comeback for the actor.

Michelle Yeoh wins Best Actress

Everything Everywhere All At Once continued its sweep, with Michelle Yeoh winning the award for Best Actress . (Which puts Everything Everywhere All At Once at three out of four of the acting awards — something that’s only happened two other times in Oscar history.)

Yeoh is the first Asian actor to win the Best Actress Oscar. She began her speech saying, “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dreams come true. And ladies… never let anybody tell you that you are past your prime.”

Everything Everywhere All At Once wins Best Picture

After sweeping the major categories all night, it wasn’t so much a surprise that the A24 multiverse dramedy picked up the top prize of the night . Victories are rarely this sweet.

“This is for my dad,” said producer Jonathan Wang, “who like so many immigrant parents, died young. He is so proud of me… not because of this, but because we made this movie with what he taught me to do: That no person is no important than profits, and no one is more important than anyone else.”

Harrison Ford gives Ke Huy Quan a big Temple of Doom hug

The producers of the 2023 Oscars knew what they were doing when they asked Ford to present the Best Picture Oscar — Everything Everywhere All at Once was the clear favorite for the win, and putting the legend on stage meant the potential for an adorable reunion with his former Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom co-star Ke Huy Quan. And that’s exactly what happened, minutes after the EEAAO cast took the stage for the Best Picture win. I mean, c’mon, this echo of their long-ago movie is a great moment in award-show history.

Indiana Jones hugs Short Round in Temple of Doom

Correction: A previous version of this article misattributed Stephanie Hsu as Mitski, who sang “This Is A Life” alongside David Byrne for Everything E verywhere All At Once ’s soundtrack. Hsu performed with Byrne at the Oscars. We’ve edited the article to reflect this.

Everything we know about the 2023 Oscars — including celebrity presenters, performances, pre-shows, and more

Pedro Pascal, Harrison Ford, Halle Berry, and Elizabeth Olsen are just some of the stars who will present at Sunday's ceremony.

Emlyn Travis is a news writer at  Entertainment Weekly  with over five years of experience covering the latest in entertainment. A proud Kingston University alum, Emlyn has written about music, fandom, film, television, and awards for multiple outlets including MTV News,  Teen Vogue , Bustle, BuzzFeed,  Paper Magazine , Dazed, and NME. She joined EW in August 2022.

Hollywood's biggest night of the year is almost here.

The 2023 Oscars are just around the corner, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a few changes to the program following its controversial 2022 broadcast. This time, all 23 categories will be presented live at the event after last year's decision to pre-tape eight competitive categories sparked backlash from industry professionals. This is also the first Oscars since Will Smith infamously slapped presenter Chris Rock during last year's ceremony — a moment that has already been referenced in promotional videos for the event .

The Oscars are voted upon by the more than 10,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the course of a four-month-long period. Final voting for the 95th Academy Awards is held from March 2 to March 7 .

EW has you covered for everything you need to know ahead of the 2023 Oscars, including who's nominated, who's performing, and how you can tune in. Find out more below!

When and where are the 2023 Oscars?

This year's ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 12, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles.

How can I watch the awards ceremony?

The 2023 Oscars will air live on ABC . The ceremony will also be available to watch through multiple streaming services (which often offer free trial subscriptions) including Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV, and FuboTV. You can also visit ABC.com or use the ABC app to watch the ceremony by signing in with your cable provider. If you are viewing outside of the U.S., you can check out the international local listings on the Academy's website.

Is there a pre-show?

Yes! There will be both a pre-show and an official lead-in broadcast ahead of Sunday's awards ceremony.

First, ABC News will host On the Red Carpet Live: Countdown to Oscars 95 , a pre-show event that airs from 1-4 p.m. ET/10 a.m.-1 p.m. PT on ABC. It will also be available to stream on the ABC News Live website from 1:30 p.m. EDT/10:30 a.m. PDT until the official start of the Oscars.

Later, Ashley Graham , Vanessa Hudgens , and Lilly Singh will join together to host the Countdown to the Oscars lead-in show, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT on ABC. The 90-minute special will spotlight many of the evening's incredible nominees, performers, and presenters, as well as give fans a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood's biggest night.

Catch all of the stars — including Brendan Fraser, Questlove, and Harvey Guillén — as they arrive on the ceremony's champagne carpet .

Who is hosting the 2023 Oscars?

Jimmy Kimmel will return as the host of this year's Oscars after previously anchoring the show in 2017 (which featured the Moonlight / La La Land debacle ) and again in 2018. "Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap," the Jimmy Kimmel Live host said in a press statement. "Either way, I am grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no."

In a promotional video ahead of the Academy Awards, Kimmel received his hosting orders from Top Gun: Maverick stars Jon Hamm and Charles Parnell. The pair noted that ABC was looking for someone who was both "unflappable and unslappable," a nod to Smith striking Rock last year.

Who is nominated at the 2023 Oscars?

A24's multiversal movie Everything Everywhere All at Once received the most nominations at the Academy Awards with 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Actress ( Michelle Yeoh ), Best Supporting Actor ( Ke Huy Quan ), and Best Supporting Actress ( Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu ). It is followed closely behind by Martin McDonagh's drama The Banshees of Inisherin and the German war film All Quiet on the Western Front , which each scored nine nominations.

Other notable nods include Angela Bassett making history by becoming the first Marvel actor to earn a nomination for her performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , as well as everyone in the Best Actor category — which includes Brendan Fraser , Colin Farrell , Paul Mescal , Bill Nighy , and Austin Butler — being first-time nominees. See the full list of 2023 Oscar nominees here .

Who is presenting at the 2023 Oscars?

On Thursday, the Oscars announced that Halle Berry , Paul Dano , Cara Delevingne , Harrison Ford , Kate Hudson , Mindy Kaling , Eva Longoria , Julia Louis-Dreyfus , Andie MacDowell , Elizabeth Olsen , Pedro Pascal , and John Travolta will all present at the awards ceremony.

The event's final round of presenters join an all-star list that includes Halle Bailey , Antonio Banderas , Elizabeth Banks , Jessica Chastain , John Cho , Andrew Garfield , Hugh Grant , Danai Gurira , Salma Hayek Pinault , Nicole Kidman , Florence Pugh , Sigourney Weaver , Riz Ahmed , Emily Blunt , Jennifer Connelly , Ariana DeBose , Samuel L. Jackson , Dwayne Johnson , Michael B. Jordan , Troy Kotsur , Jonathan Majors , Melissa McCarthy , Janelle Monáe , Deepika Padukone, Questlove , Zoe Saldaña , and Donnie Yen .

Glenn Close was also originally set to present at the ceremony but had to bow out after contracting COVID-19 over the weekend.

Ahmed previously announced the Oscars' nominees with actress Allison Williams in January, while Dano, Weaver, and Connelly will perform double duty as presenters whose films are also nominated on the evening. Weaver made a splash in Avatar: The Way of Water — which is nominated for four awards including Best Picture, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects — while Connelly starred in Top Gun: Maverick , which is up for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay), and Best Visual Effects. Dano is the only presenter that has two films — Steven Spielberg 's The Fabelmans and Matt Reeves ' The Batman — in awards contention this year.

Who will perform at the Oscars?

All of the Best Original Song nominees will perform at the Oscars.

Fresh off her recent Super Bowl performance , Rihanna will grace the Oscars stage to sing her single "Lift Me Up " from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Everything Everywhere All at Once 's "This Is a Life" will be performed by David Byrne , Son Lux, and actress Stephanie Hsu, who steps in for original performer Mitski . Actress Sofia Carson will be accompanied by Diane Warren for a poignant rendition of "Applause" from Tell It Like a Woman , and RRR 's "Naatu Naatu" will also be performed at the awards ceremony.

After previously announcing that Lady Gaga , a past Oscar winner in the Best Song category , would not perform her Top Gun: Maverick hit, "Hold My Hand," at the ceremony, ABC's On the Red Carpet pre-show revealed that she will actually sing the song after all.

Will there be an in memoriam segment?

Yes, the Oscars will pay their respects to the stars we've lost since last year's broadcast with an in memoriam segment during the show, which will feature a performance by rock legend Lenny Kravitz .

How can viewers vote for the 2023 Oscars?

Only Academy members are eligible to vote for the Oscars, but viewers can still get in on the fun by filling out EW's very own printable Oscars ballot and comparing how their picks match up with the actual winners on Sunday.

Who are the 2023 Oscars winners?

See the full list of Oscar winners here , which we will be updating live throughout the ceremony.

Michelle Yeoh Wins Best Actress at Oscars 2023, and Makes History

best actress presentation 2023

After a long best-actress Oscar race , Michelle Yeoh has been crowned the victor, making her the first Asian woman to win a lead-actress Oscar in the awards show’s 95-year history. The Malaysian-born stuntwoman-actor won for her spectacular, shape-shifting role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, beating out Cate Blanchett ( Tár ), Michelle Williams ( The Fabelmans ), Ana de Armas ( Blonde ), and Andrea Riseborough ( To Leslie ).

“For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dreams do come true,” Yeoh said in her speech, receiving cheers in response. “And ladies, don’t let anyone tell you that you are past your prime.”

Yeoh is only the second Asian actor to be nominated in the best-actress category in the show’s nearly 10-decade history. The first was Merle Oberon, a Mumbai-born actor who was nominated for 1935’s The Dark Angel; however, while alive, Oberon passed as white . Oberon went to great lengths to hide her Asian heritage— bleaching her skin, refining a posh accent, and claiming she was from Tasmania.

Throughout the current awards season, Yeoh has been vocal about the fact that her nomination is as important to the Asian community as it is to her.

best actress presentation 2023

“This is not just for me; this is for every little girl that looks like me,” Yeoh said during her SAG Award acceptance speech. “Thank you for giving me a seat at the table, because so many of us need this. We want to be seen, we want to be heard, and tonight you have shown us that it is possible. And I am grateful.”

Yeoh, who has been acting for about 40 years, initially rose to fame overseas in Hong Kong action films before breaking out with US audiences in 1997’s James Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies, playing a Chinese spy opposite Pierce Brosnan ’s 007. After roles in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Memoirs of a Geisha; and Crazy Rich Asians, she landed the starring role in Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert ’s universe-bending sci-fi feature, Everything Everywhere All at Once. The directors had initially wanted Jackie Chan to play the lead, a put-upon laundromat owner—with Yeoh playing Chan’s wife—but Yeoh said she scoffed at that idea. “I’m like, no way,” the actor recalled to Kara Swisher last year. “In your dreams, buddy. Not going to happen.”

So the filmmakers switched up the roles, making Yeoh the immigrant laundromat owner who deals with a failing business and a fractured relationship with her daughter. In a supernatural twist, she transverses universes as a superhero version of herself.

“Think about it,” Yeoh said in the same interview with Swisher. “This is the first time you’re seeing an older Asian immigrant woman being the superhero, having the opportunity to demonstrate these kind of martial arts skills. It’s normally, yes, for a younger version. It could have been a girl. But in general, it’s always an older man.”

Both Yeoh and the film have been 2023’s awards darlings—with Yeoh nabbing a Golden Globe and beating out her primary competitor, Blanchett, to win the Independent Spirit Award and the National Board of Review trophy. Everything Everywhere All at Once earned 11 Oscar nominations, more than any other film this year, with other acting nominations going to Yeoh’s costars Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan. Yeoh had another historically significant win in late February, when she became the first Asian actor to win the best-actress category at the SAG Awards.

According to calculations by The New York Times , only 23 of 1,808 acting nominees in the Oscars’ history could be identified as Asian. And of those 23, only four—before Sunday evening—won their category.

Shortly after receiving her Oscar nod, Yeoh referred to the Asian community’s long history of exclusion from Hollywood’s glitziest awards show.

“Ninety-five years of Oscars…Of course, I’m over the moon, but I feel a little sad because I know we know there have been amazing actresses from Asia that came before me, and I stand on their shoulders,” the actor told the Times . “I hope this will shatter that frigging glass ceiling to no end, that this will continue, and we will see more of our faces up there.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The best actress category at the 95th Oscars is full of great awards season drama, from the surprise nomination of Andrea Riseborough to the potential history to be made if Michelle Yeoh wins, which AP’s film writers predict will happen .

All will be celebrated during Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony, which airs live on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern. There’s still time to catch up on their performances before the show.

Here’s a bit more about the contenders.

ANA DE ARMAS

“Blonde” may have been reviled by many critics, but you’d be hard-pressed to find any who didn’t admire Ana de Armas’s portrayal of Marilyn Monroe nonetheless. De Armas prepped for a year and was thrown into the fire on her first day on set: In the actual apartment Norma Jeane lived in with her mother — a nightmare sequence in which she rescues a baby from the dresser drawer that she was kept in as an infant, as the place burns around her. Her second day was her visit to her mother in the mental hospital, where she got to speak as Marilyn for the first time on camera.

“I wasn’t in character all the time. But ... I felt that heaviness and that weight in my shoulders. And I felt that sadness,” de Armas said. “She was all I thought about. She was all I dreamed about. She was all I talked about.”

Image

Trivia: De Armas is the first Cuban woman to be nominated for best actress.

CATE BLANCHETT

“Tár” wouldn’t exist without Cate Blanchett

“I am still processing the experience, not only because it spoke to a lot of things that I had been thinking about, but I feel so expanded by having been in Todd’s orbit,” Blanchett said. “It was a very, very fluid, dangerous, alive process making the film.”

Lifetime Oscar nominations: 8

Wins: 2. Best Supporting Actress for “The Aviator” in 2005 and Best Actress for “Blue Jasmine” in 2014

Notable Wins: Venice Film Festival Volpi Cup, BAFTA, Golden Globes (Drama).

ANDREA RISEBOROUGH

Riseborough was unexpectedly nominated

Riseborough rose into the Oscar ranks thanks largely to the grassroots efforts of “To Leslie” director Michael Morris and his wife, actor Mary McCormack. They urged stars to see the film and either host a screening or praise Riseborough’s performance on social media. And a whole lot of them did: Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Amy Adams and Courteney Cox all hosted screenings for the film.

After a review of the campaign, the Academy said that Andrea Riseborough would not be stripped of her nomination.

MICHELLE WILLIAMS

The pivotal event of “The Fabelmans” comes when Mitzi Fabelman, a fictionalized version of Steven Spielberg’s own mother played by Michelle Williams , reluctantly leaves her husband for his best friend.

“I thought she already suffered a near-death experience. When she gave up her dream of being a concert pianist, she experienced what it’s like for part of you to die,” says Williams. “So when she’s faced with another near-death experience — Do I stay in this marriage or do I allow myself to go where my heart is leading? — she knows that she can’t die again. There will be nothing left of her.

“What is this thing in her that allows her to make this decision? Is it her artistry? Is it bravery? Is it how big her emotions are? What allowed this woman to stake a claim on her life like this?” says Williams. “I don’t know but I do think it’s what’s allowed her children to do the same thing, to stake a claim on their own lives. That, I think, is one of the greatest gifts that you give to your kids, showing them how they can be a full person.”

Lifetime Oscar Nominations: 5

MICHELLE YEOH

After decades first as a star in Hong Kong cinema and then more mainstream hits like “Tomorrow Never Dies” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” the Malayasian-born Yeoh has grown into a movie queen. She’s had integral roles in what have been the first large U.S. studio movies in years with Asian-led casts—Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” As much as those films mean to her, she was a polished supporting player in them — then came “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”

The Daniels originally named the multiverse hopping matriarch Michelle, as a “love letter” to Yeoh. But then she asked to change that and Evelyn was born.

“I’m like ‘No, no, no’ because I believe this person, this character that you’ve written so rich, deserves a voice of her own. She is the voice of those mothers, aunties, grandmothers that you pass by in Chinatown or in the supermarket that you don’t even give a second glance to. Then you just take her for granted,” Yeoh said. “She’s never had a voice.”

Trivia: If Yeoh were to win, she would become the first Asian woman awarded in that category.

Notable Wins: Golden Globes (Musical/Comedy), Screen Actors Guild, Film Independent Spirit Award.

HONG KONG – Two veterans of the Hong Kong entertainment industry have nabbed the top acting prizes for the first time at the TVB Awards Presentation ceremony on Sunday.

Actor Joel Chan, 46, won Best Actor for his multiple roles in the supernatural drama Barrack O’Karma 1968, beating the other frontrunner Ruco Chan of I’ve Got The Power.

Joel Chan was in tears as he went on stage to receive the award, thanking TVB executives such as Eric Tsang, Catherina Tsang and Virginia Lok for helping him at the lowest point of his life.

“The most difficult thing during the marathon of life is to stand up after a failure,” he said during his acceptance speech.

Chan, who has been in the industry for 30 years, won Best Supporting Actor – for The Unholy Alliance – for the first time in 2017.

He received his first Best Actor nomination in 2019 and was subsequently nominated for the award again in the next two editions.

Actress Elena Kong, 51, was a surprise winner after she beat hot favourites Alice Chan and Nina Paw to clinch the Best Actress award for her role in Get On A Flat.

The contemporary housing drama also won Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor for Eric Tang.

Kong, who joined the industry in 1992, was also emotional, saying she did not expect to win. Her last award, Best Supporting Actress for Triumph In The Skies II, was in 2013.

The Best Supporting Actress prize went to Angel Chiang of The Beauty Of War.

The awards ceremony was held at TVB City in Tseung Kwan O on Sunday.

According to Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily News, the total number of votes received for the awards exceeded 950,000, breaking past records. The winners are determined by a combination of results from a professional voting committee and the public.

Oriental Daily News said the competition was especially close for the Best Actor and Best Actress awards.

Nominations voting is from January 8-12, 2025, with official Oscar nominations announced January 17, 2025. Final voting is February 11-18, 2025. And finally, the 97th Oscars telecast will be broadcast on Sunday, March 2 and air live on ABC at 7:00 p.m. ET/ 4:00 p.m. PT. We update our picks through awards season, so keep checking IndieWire for all our 2025 Oscar predictions .

The State of the Race

There is also Joan Chen, the star of Sundance Audience Award winner “ Dìdi ,” who has long been a captivating screen presence in projects like “Twin Peaks” and “Lust, Caution,” but has never been nominated for any major awards. As the well-meaning mother of a teenage son discovering himself in the social media stone age, Chen really shines.

Outside of that, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor gives a memorable performance in Sundance film “ Exhibiting Forgiveness ,” despite it being a little jarring that she plays André Holland’s mother (they only have an 11 year age difference), Aubrey Plaza seems like one of the few members of the “ Megalopolis ” ensemble to get a consistent kudos after its Cannes rollout, and Jennifer Grey gets to have fun opposite Best Supporting Actor frontrunner Kieran Culkin in the Sundance hit “ A Real Pain .”

Again, it is still hard to say who else is set to make an impact. “Wicked” star Ariana Grande, for instance, may not even be considered a supporting actress. But “The Piano Lesson” star Danielle Deadwyler, “Conclave” star Isabella Rosellini, and “Queer” star Lesley Manville all feel like safe bets for what actresses will be in the awards conversation. It’s certainly one that each of them is already used to.

Contenders are listed in alphabetical order, below. No actor will be deemed a frontrunner until I have seen the film.

Frontrunners: Joan Chen (“Dìdi”) Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“Exhibiting Forgiveness”) Jennifer Grey (“A Real Pain”) Cailee Spaeny (“Civil War”) Tilda Swinton (“Problemista”)

All About Miranda Cosgrove's Parents, Chris and Tom Cosgrove

Miranda Cosgrove credits her parents with keeping her grounded throughout her long career in Hollywood.

The iCarly star was born in Los Angeles on May 14, 1993, to mom Chris and dad Tom Cosgrove. She began acting just a few years later, after being scouted by an agent at age 3. While Chris and Tom weren’t sold on the idea of her working in the entertainment industry at first, they ultimately decided that modeling and acting could be a good way for Miranda to save money for college.

Early on, Miranda landed her breakout role as a precocious student in School of Rock . Afterwards, she quickly became the darling of Nickelodeon, where she starred as the scheming little sister on Drake & Josh and later, as the lead on the hit show iCarly .

Miranda later went to college, reprised her iCarly role in the 2021 revival and starred in her first rom-com in 2024, Mother of the Bride .

“My parents, they’ve been a big help for sure,” the actress said on the Today show in 2016 when asked what’s kept her steady through the years. “I really do like spending a lot of time with them and I always know I have somebody to go to.”

From staying out of the spotlight to sharing a house with their daughter, here’s everything to know about Miranda Cosgrove’s parents, Chris and Tom Cosgrove.

They were hesitant about her working in Hollywood

Miranda Cosgrove Instagram

Miranda was first scouted by an agent when she was 3 years old. Chris initially bristled at the idea of her young daughter working in the spotlight, but eventually decided it could be worth a shot if it would help her to set aside money for her education.

“Our big plan when we decided to do this was to get money for college,” Chris told The New York Times in a 2011 profile on Miranda. The actress was later named the highest-paid child actress on television by Guinness World Records in 2010.

They’ve worked hard to help her maintain a “normal” life

Chris and Tom have always remained far from the spotlight, aiming to maintain a sense of normalcy for their daughter as she skyrocketed to stardom in her early teens. As of 2011, the pair still lived in the home Miranda grew up in in Downey, Calif., and Tom owned a dry-cleaning business where he worked every day.

“We don’t feel like we’re a part of her world,” Chris told The New York Times . “Like what are we going to do later? And, you know, it’s not our money. So we’re doing our own thing,” she said of sticking to their pre-Hollywood lifestyle.

They also advocated for Miranda to stay in public school for as long as she could, but coordinating her school and filming schedule grew increasingly difficult by sixth grade.

“It took a lot for my mom to give in,” Miranda said. “I remember her asking: ‘Are you sure you want to do this? Are you sure you want to stay in acting?’ ”

For her part, the actress was initially excited about the prospect of home school. “At first I was kind of happy to be home-schooled,” she explained, “because all my friends were afraid of that first day of middle school. But actually it’s harder. You’re all alone."

To that point, Chris made sure Miranda was always able to carve out time to see her childhood friends, helping her maintain close relationships outside of Hollywood.

Her mom often accompanied her to public events

Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic

Chris has remained by Miranda’s side for all manner of events, from red carpet premieres to talk show appearances, concerts, press appearances and more. She was on hand during Miranda’s 2016 chat with Today, where the actress praised her parents’ grounding presence and noted they were both in the audience.

Chris also appeared by her daughter’s side at a few appearances in 2008, from that year’s Nickelodeon upfront to a Broadway play. Miranda has also shared a handful of throwback photos of herself with both parents on social media over the years.

She keeps her parents in the loop when it comes to dating

Frazer Harrison/WireImage

Dating comes with its own particular set of constraints and complications as a child star, and Miranda's parents have supported her through them. In 2011, the actress recalled an instance where her mom actually trailed her and her date to a restaurant — something the mother-daughter duo recalled with humor.

“It’s not the way it sounds,” Chris told The New York Times , adding, “I was going to have to pick her up at the restaurant anyway, so I figured I might as well go then and wait.”

For his part, Tom isn’t a fan of Miranda’s typical type. “I always go for like really thin and nerdy,” she told Bustle in 2024. “In my dad’s mind, the perfect guy for me would be somebody kind of like in The Notebook . You know how Ryan Gosling’s character, Noah, basically built an entire house? My dad would love Ryan Gosling in that movie for me."

The Kids' Choice Award winner added, "When I got into my last relationship, I remember telling him, ‘I really like this guy and I think I’m maybe going to end up with him.’ And my dad was like, ‘What can he build?' "

She graduated from her dad’s alma mater

The Despicable Me star attended her dad’s alma mater, University of Southern California. In 2012, the actress started at the school and initially majored in film studies before switching to psychology in her third year.

During a 2017 appearance on Live! With Kelly and Ryan , Miranda opened up about her decision to switch majors. “My dad did psychology at USC too, but now he owns a dry-cleaning business,” she said, adding, “He still says he uses it all the time though.”

Chris acknowledged at the time that the decision for Miranda to focus on her studies could negatively impact her career, but that there were potential advantages to taking a break as well.

“Yes, it could make her lose momentum,” Chris told The New York Times . “I understand that. But if the talent is there, it will always be there. And in a way, maybe when you come back you won’t be stuck in the stigma of being the child star. So it could be an advantage.”

She spends a lot of time at her parents' house

Miranda spends most of her time in her parents' house, although she purchased her own L.A. home in 2012, shortly before the final season of iCarly aired.

The actress even previously played a college student who returns home to live with her family on Crowded , and joked that the show wasn’t so far off from her own living situation.

“I feel like everybody wants to find a way to get out and be independent, but for me, it was like all of a sudden I had this place that I could go live at and I was like, ‘Oh no.’ My mom is not doing my laundry and I have no one to watch TV with at night,’ ” she told PEOPLE in 2016.

In one Instagram caption, Miranda lovingly referred to her mom as her “late night TV watching buddy for life.”

Miranda is incredibly close with her parents

Miranda's parents make annual appearances on her Instagram when she shares sweet tributes and throwback photos of her family for Mother’s and Father’s Day.

“It’s Mother’s Day and my Birthday today!” she wrote when ringing in her 30th birthday in 2023. “I’m feeling extremely grateful for my insane, hilarious, amazing Mom and for all the memories I’ve been able to create over the last 30 years."

In 2017, she shared an image of her parents standing together and holding her up. “My little family! Happy Mother's Day to my amazing, perfect Mom,” Miranda wrote. “She tells me what to do even though I'm old and she's always there when I'm sad. I love you!"

As for her dad, Miranda has highlighted all the things he’s taught her over the years, from how to memorize her lines to learning how to ride a bike . “Happy Father’s Day ... always ready with his tool box to fix anything, hilarious Dad. I love him so much,” she wrote in 2021, sharing a slew of throwback photos featuring her dad gazing adoringly at her.

To mark Father’s Day in 2017 , the actress sweetly described her dad as the “best Dad ever!” Miranda added, “He's always there for me, always around to give me good advice, and always willing to beat me at an intense game of scrabble. I love you!!!"

The ascension of AI in R&D

Trends-To-Watch-The-Ascension-Of-AI-In-R&D-1920x1080-Hero

While the future of AI has always been forward-looking, the AI revolution in chemistry and drug discovery has yet to be fully realized. While there have been some high-profile set-backs , several breakthroughs should be watched closely as the field continues to evolve. Generative AI is making an impact in drug discovery , machine learning is being used more in environmental research , and large language models like ChatGPT are being tested in healthcare applications and clinical settings.

Many scientists are keeping an eye on AlphaFold, DeepMind’s protein structure prediction software that revolutionized how proteins are understood. DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs have recently announced how their latest model shows improved accuracy, can generate predictions for almost all molecules in the Protein Data Bank, and expand coverage to ligands, nucleic acids, and posttranslational modifications . Therapeutic antibody discovery driven by AI is also gaining popularity , and platforms such as the RubrYc Therapeutics antibody discovery engine will help advance research in this area.

Though many look at AI development with excitement, concerns over accurate and accessible training data , fairness and bias , lack of regulatory oversight , impact on academia, scholarly research and publishing , hallucinations in large language models , and even concerns over infodemic threats to public health are being discussed. However, continuous improvement is inevitable with AI, so expect to see many new developments and innovations throughout 2024.

‘Greener’ green chemistry

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-Greener-Green-Chemistry-1920x1080-Hero

Green chemistry is a rapidly evolving field that is constantly seeking innovative ways to minimize the environmental impact of chemical processes. Here are several emerging trends that are seeing significant breakthroughs:

  • Improving green chemistry predictions/outcomes : One of the biggest challenges in green chemistry is predicting the environmental impact of new chemicals and processes. Researchers are developing new computational tools and models that can help predict these impacts with greater accuracy. This will allow chemists to design safer and more environmentally friendly chemicals.
  • Reducing plastics: More than 350 million tons of plastic waste is generated every year. Across the landscape of manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers, reducing the use of single-use plastics and microplastics is critical. New value-driven approaches by innovators like MiTerro that reuse industrial by-products and biomass waste for eco-friendly and cheaper plastic replacements will soon be industry expectations. Lowering costs and plastic footprints will be important throughout the entire supply chain.
  • Alternative battery chemistry: In the battery and energy storage space, finding alternatives to scarce " endangered elements" like lithium and cobalt will be critical. While essential components of many batteries, they are becoming scarce and expensive. New investments in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that do not use nickel and cobalt have expanded , with 45% of the EV market share being projected for LFP in 2029. Continued research is projected for more development in alternative materials like sodium, iron, and magnesium, which are more abundant, less expensive, and more sustainable.
  • More sustainable catalysts : Catalysts speed up a chemical reaction or decrease the energy required without getting consumed. Noble metals are excellent catalysts; however, they are expensive and their mining causes environmental damage. Even non-noble metal catalysts can also be toxic due to contamination and challenges with their disposal. Sustainable catalysts are made of earth-abundant elements that are also non-toxic in nature. In recent years, there has been a growing focus on developing sustainable catalysts that are more environmentally friendly and less reliant on precious metals. New developments with catalysts, their roles, and environmental impact will drive meaningful progress in reducing carbon footprints.
  • Recycling lithium-ion batteries: Lithium-ion recycling has seen increased investments with more than 800 patents already published in 2023. The use of solid electrolytes or liquid nonflammable electrolytes may improve the safety and durability of LIBs and reduce their material use. Finally, a method to manufacture electrodes without solvent s could reduce the use of deprecated solvents such as N-methylpyrrolidinone, which require recycling and careful handling to prevent emissions.

Rise of biomaterials

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-Rise-Of-Biomaterials-1920x1080-Hero

New materials for biomedical applications could revolutionize many healthcare segments in 2024. One example is bioelectronic materials, which form interfaces between electronic devices and the human body, such as the brain-computer interface system being developed by Neuralink. This system, which uses a network of biocompatible electrodes implanted directly in the brain, was given FDA approval to begin human trials in 2023.

  • Bioelectronic materials: are often hybrids or composites, incorporating nanoscale materials, highly engineered conductive polymers, and bioresorbable substances. Recently developed devices can be implanted, used temporarily, and then safely reabsorbed by the body without the need for removal. This has been demonstrated by a fully bioresorbable, combined sensor-wireless power receiver made from zinc and the biodegradable polymer, poly(lactic acid).
  • Natural biomaterials: that are biocompatible and naturally derived (such as chitosan, cellulose nanomaterials, and silk) are used to make advanced multifunctional biomaterials in 2023. For example, they designed an injectable hydrogel brain implant for treating Parkinson’s disease, which is based on reversible crosslinks formed between chitosan, tannic acid, and gold nanoparticles.
  • Bioinks : are used for 3D printing of organs and transplant development which could revolutionize patient care. Currently, these models are used for studying organ architecture like 3D-printed heart models for cardiac disorders and 3D-printed lung models to test the efficacy of drugs. Specialized bioinks enhance the quality, efficacy, and versatility of 3D-printed organs, structures, and outcomes. Finally, new approaches like volumetric additive manufacturing (VAM) of pristine silk- based bioinks are unlocking new frontiers of innovation for 3D printing.

To the moon and beyond

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-To-The-Moon-And-Beyond-1920x1080-Hero

The global Artemis program is a NASA-led international space exploration program that aims to land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon by 2025 as part of the long-term goal of establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon. Additionally, the NASA mission called Europa Clipper, scheduled for a 2024 launch, will orbit around Jupiter and fly by Europa , one of Jupiter’s moons, to study the presence of water and its habitability. China’s mission, Chang’e 6 , plans to bring samples from the moon back to Earth for further studies. The Martian Moons Exploration (MMX) mission by Japan’s JAXA plans to bring back samples from Phobos, one of the Mars moons. Boeing is also expected to do a test flight of its reusable space capsule Starliner , which can take people to low-earth orbit.

The R&D impact of Artemis extends to more fields than just aerospace engineering, though:

  • Robotics: Robots will play a critical role in the Artemis program, performing many tasks, such as collecting samples, building infrastructure, and conducting scientific research. This will drive the development of new robotic technologies, including autonomous systems and dexterous manipulators.
  • Space medicine: The Artemis program will require the development of new technologies to protect astronauts from the hazards of space travel, such as radiation exposure and microgravity. This will include scientific discoveries in medical diagnostics, therapeutics, and countermeasures.
  • Earth science: The Artemis program will provide a unique opportunity to study the Moon and its environment. This will lead to new insights into the Earth's history, geology, and climate.
  • Materials science: The extreme space environment will require new materials that are lightweight, durable, and radiation resistant. This will have applications in many industries, including aerospace, construction, and energy.
  • Information technology: The Artemis program will generate a massive amount of data, which will need to be processed, analyzed, and shared in real time. This will drive the development of new IT technologies, such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

The CRISPR pay-off

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-The-CRISPR-Pay-Off-1920x1080-Hero

After years of research, setbacks, and minimal progress, the first formal evidence of CRISPR as a therapeutic platform technology in the clinic was realized. Intellia Therapeutics received FDA clearance to initiate a pivotal phase 3 trial of a new drug for the treatment of hATTR, and using the same Cas9 mRNA, got a new medicine treating a different disease, angioedema. This was achieved by only changing 20 nucleotides of the guide RNA, suggesting that CRISPR can be used as a therapeutic platform technology in the clinic.

The second great moment for CRISPR drug development technology came when Vertex and CRISPR Therapeutics announced the authorization of the first CRISPR/Cas9 gene-edited therapy, CASGEVY™, by the United Kingdom MHRA, for the treatment of sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia. This was the first approval of a CRISPR-based therapy for human use and is a landmark moment in realizing the potential of CRISPR to improve human health.

In addition to its remarkable genome editing capability, the CRISPR-Cas system has proven to be effective in many applications, including early cancer diagnosis . CRISPR-based genome and transcriptome engineering and CRISPR-Cas12a and CRISPR-Cas13a appear to have the necessary characteristics to be robust detection tools for cancer therapy and diagnostics. CRISPR-Cas-based biosensing system gives rise to a new era for precise diagnoses of early-stage cancers.

MIT engineers have also designed a new nanoparticle DNA-encoded nanosensor for urinary biomarkers that could enable early cancer diagnoses with a simple urine test. The sensors, which can detect cancerous proteins, could also distinguish the type of tumor or how it responds to treatment.

Ending cancer

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-Ending-Cancer-1920x1080-Hero

The immuno-oncology field has seen tremendous growth in the last few years. Approved products such as cytokines, vaccines, tumor-directed monoclonal antibodies, and immune checkpoint blockers continue to grow in market size. Novel therapies like TAC01-HER2 are currently undergoing clinical trials. This unique therapy uses autologous T cells, which have been genetically engineered to incorporate T cell Antigen Coupler (TAC) receptors that recognize human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) presence on tumor cells to remove them. This could be a promising therapy for metastatic, HER2-positive solid tumors.

Another promising strategy aims to use the CAR-T cells against solid tumors in conjunction with a vaccine that boosts immune response. Immune boosting helps the body create more host T cells that can target other tumor antigens that CAR-T cells cannot kill.

Another notable trend is the development of improved and effective personalized therapies. For instance, a recently developed personalized RNA neoantigen vaccine, based on uridine mRNA–lipoplex nanoparticles, was found effective against pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Major challenges in immuno-oncology are therapy resistance, lack of predictable biomarkers, and tumor heterogenicity. As a result, devising novel treatment strategies could be a future research focus.

Decarbonizing energy

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-Decarbonizing-Energy-1920x1080-Hero

Multiple well-funded efforts are underway to decarbonize energy production by replacing fossil fuel-based energy sources with sources that generate no (or much less) CO2 in 2024.

One of these efforts is to incorporate large-scale energy storage devices into the existing power grid. These are an important part of enabling the use of renewable sources since they provide additional supply and demand for electricity to complement renewable sources. Several types of grid-scale storage that vary in the amount of energy they can store and how quickly they can discharge it into the grid are under development. Some are physical (flywheels, pumped hydro, and compressed air) and some are chemical (traditional batteries, flow batteries , supercapacitors, and hydrogen ), but all are the subject of active chemistry and materials development research. The U.S. government is encouraging development in this area through tax credits as part of the Inflation Reduction Act and a $7 billion program to establish regional hydrogen hubs.

Meanwhile, nuclear power will continue to be an active R&D area in 2024. In nuclear fission, multiple companies are developing small modular reactors (SMRs) for use in electricity production and chemical manufacturing, including hydrogen. The development of nuclear fusion reactors involves fundamental research in physics and materials science. One major challenge is finding a material that can be used for the wall of the reactor facing the fusion plasma; so far, candidate materials have included high-entropy alloys and even molten metals .

Neurodegenerative diseases

INSGENENGSOC101826-2024-Trends-To-Watch-Neurodegenerative-Diseases-1920x1080-Hero

Neurodegenerative diseases are a major public health concern, being a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. While there is currently no cure for any neurodegenerative disease, new scientific discoveries and understandings of these pathways may be the key to helping patient outcomes.

  • Alzheimer’s disease: Two immunotherapeutics have received FDA approval to reduce both cognitive and functional decline in individuals living with early Alzheimer's disease. Aducannumab (Aduhelm®) received accelerated approval in 2021 and is the first new treatment approved for Alzheimer’s since 2003 and the first therapy targeting the disease pathophysiology, reducing beta-amyloid plaques in the brains of early Alzheimer’s disease patients. Lecanemab (Leqembi®) received traditional approval in 2023 and is the first drug targeting Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology to show clinical benefits, reducing the rate of disease progression and slowing cognitive and functional decline in adults with early stages of the disease.
  • Parkinson’s disease: New treatment modalities outside of pharmaceuticals and deep brain stimulation are being researched and approved by the FDA for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease symptoms. The non-invasive medical device, Exablate Neuro (approved by the FDA in 2021), uses focused ultrasound on one side of the brain to provide relief from severe symptoms such as tremors, limb rigidity, and dyskinesia. 2023 brought major news for Parkinson’s disease research with the validation of the biomarker alpha-synuclein. Researchers have developed a tool called the α-synuclein seeding amplification assay which detects the biomarker in the spinal fluid of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and individuals who have not shown clinical symptoms.
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): Two pharmaceuticals have seen FDA approval in the past two years to slow disease progression in individuals with ALS. Relyvrio ® was approved in 2022 and acts by preventing or slowing more neuron cell death in patients with ALS. Tofersen (Qalsody®), an antisense oligonucleotide, was approved in 2023 under the accelerated approval pathway. Tofersen targets RNA produced from mutated superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) genes to eliminate toxic SOD1 protein production. Recently published genetic research on how mutations contribute to ALS is ongoing with researchers recently discovering how NEK1 gene mutations lead to ALS. This discovery suggests a possible rational therapeutic approach to stabilizing microtubules in ALS patients.

Press Release | Hit the road safely with the United Nations-JCDecaux Global Road Safety Campaign

best actress presentation 2023

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, is visiting NYC on July 1 st to launch the UN worldwide campaign #MakeASafetyStatement , in partnership with JCDecaux , the number one outdoor advertising company worldwide, and with the support of Saatchi & Saatchi.

The campaign aims to promote road safety and create safe, inclusive, and sustainable streets worldwide. This is a call to action, amplifying the message of the New Decade of Action for Road Safety , aiming to halve the number of road-related victims by 2030. Over two years (2024-2025), the campaign is set to reach more than 80 countries and 1,000 cities , displayed on JCDecaux’s street furniture, and promoted on social media.

The silent pandemic

Every year, the staggering toll of road-related fatalities claims the lives of 1.19 million people, leaving countless others with severe injuries. This silent pandemic overwhelmingly affects developing nations, where over 90% of the road traffic fatalities occur. Furthermore, road crashes are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5–29 years.  It is also the main reason of death and serious injury to UN personnel.

Hitting the road in the USA

In the US, road crashes are the second biggest cause of accidental death, after firearms. According to the World Health Organization (2021), the US fatality rate is estimated at 14 per 100,000 people, while that of Europe is 6.5 per 100,000 people. Pedestrian deaths in the US rose by more than 40% from 2010 to 2018, which is over twice the pace of any other OECD country. Note that the last figures of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA ) and of the US Department of Transportation (DOT)  are encouraging as highlighting a continuous decline in the number of victims.

The launch of the campaign in NYC coincides with 4 th July break and with summer vacation in several countries. Public holidays are usually periods of risk for road users. Highways are more dangerous, and there is a spike in risk-taking behavior. Sleep deprivation, distracted driving, driving under the influence, non-respect of the speed limits and the non-use of restraints, are more common on public holidays. This is therefore a time of the year to hit the road with extra caution.

#MakeASafetyStatement

The campaign seeks to reduce risk factors, especially in urban areas, enabling people to walk, live, and enjoy their environment safely.  Fourteen global, and dozens of national, celebrities have joined forces to advocate for simple and effective road safety rules in the six official UN languages.  The messages the celebrities focus on mitigate risk factors on the road. Key aspects include wearing a seat belt, driving slowly, wearing a helmet, not texting and driving, not driving under the influence or while tired, and respecting pedestrians.

Participating celebrities in the campaign include football legend Mr. Didier Drogba, F1 Driver Mr. Charles Leclerc, Oscar-winning actress and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Ms. Michelle Yeoh, tennis legend Mr. Novak Djokovic, musician Ms. Kylie Minogue, motorcycle racer Mr. Marc Marquez, supermodel Ms. Naomi Campbell, Actor Mr. Patrick Dempsey, Musician and Inspirational leader Mr. Youssou N’Dour, Actress Ms. Julie Gayet, Actor Mr. Michael Fassbender, football icon Mr. Ousmane Dembélé, Double Olympic Champion Ms. Faith Kipyegon, F1 Driver Mr. Mick Schumacher . The actor Jean Reno will join the launch event in NYC to make his safety statement.

Risk factors that are too often neglected

Drink-driving, speeding, drowsiness, carelessness, non-use of seat belts and helmets, negligence and non-compliance with the Highway Code are responsible for most road accidents in Africa. However, according to the WHO, more progress must be made regarding legislation and safety standards.

Only six countries in the world have laws that comply with WHO best practices for all the risk factors – speeding, driving under the influence or distracted driving, use of UN-standard motorbike helmets,

Helmets for Hope

One of the messages of the campaign is wearing a helmet compliant with ECE 22.05 United Nations minimum safety standards, which could reduce the risk of head injury by up to 74%. Since the beginning of this year, the Special Envoy has redoubled its efforts to support African countries in their efforts to address the lack of helmet for motorcycle drivers. Africa is the continent the most affected by road crashes with a mortality rate of 19 per 100,000 people , while in Europe the rate is 7 deaths per  100,000, and not wearing a helmet is one the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries on the road.  In that perspective, the Special Envoy has already visited 8 African countries in 2024, with a particular focus on wearing helmets responding to UN standards. He notably supported initiatives promoting the use of certified helmets in Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, South Africa, Rwanda or Sierra Leone. The Special Envoy has start to work with President Kagame, President Julius Maada Bio and First Lady of Sierra Leone, H.E Ms. Fatima Bio and continues to engage with other African Union Member States, to push for road safety on the African Union Agenda 2063 , and for ECOWAS to give the issue due consideration.

The launch event in NYC

The start of the campaign was announced during the High-level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Global Road Safety in July 2022.  The campaign’s first launch took place in Brussels, Belgium, in September 2023. In March 2024, it was launched in Ivory Coast, followed by Mongolia and South Africa in Spring 2024. The next stop is the USA for a launch to be held in NYC on 1 st July 2024.
