  • 2. Find the best location for your coffee shop

To be successful, you need the right location for your coffee shop. You want something that fits the following parameters:

  • Centrally located and easy to access
  • Highly visible and experiences consistent foot traffic
  • A space that fits your vision

Jack Wilson, the owner of Radio Coffee and Beer, warns that finding this dream spot won’t happen overnight.

His team scoured city after city, scouting each location, even going so far as to count pedestrian traffic by hand. He was looking for a former restaurant space, so he didn’t have to remodel everything from scratch. Finally, one day when he dropped his keys on the sidewalk he noticed a tiny “for sale” sign in a former tavern window. After months of searching, he’d found his spot.

Keep in mind that effective restaurant spaces are highly sought after and difficult to find. It may take a while to find just the right spot, but for a business type that benefits from ease of access and casual traffic, it’s worth taking your time to find the right spot.

  • 3. Create a floor plan

A solid and welcoming floor plan is vital for a coffee shop. You want customers to have space to form a line, employees to have the materials they need within reach for quick access and a comfortable seating area. As with finding a location, it will take some time to produce a good floor plan.

According to Wilson you should, “walk yourself through every scenario you can think of,” he says. “If you’re making coffee, what needs to be near you? If you’re a customer, what do you want in a seating area? Visualize everything you can and start putting those ideas down on paper.”

Design your cafe floor plan online

Here are a few free websites you can use to kickstart your planning process. Once you’ve drawn up an initial sketch on paper, get online and make it a reality.

Autodesk Homestyler (free): This is probably my favorite option. You can either start designing your floor from scratch or choose from a gallery of designs to personalize with your own look and feel. In fact, there’s even an option to experiment with real-world products and brands. When you’re done, you’ll be able to share the design as part of your planning process. It can even be used as part of your pitch to potential investors.

Floorplanner: This software is clean and simple to use, with plenty of drag-and-drop furniture and other items to fill out your design. It allows for both 2-D and 3-D visualization of your designs and can be easily printed out if needed.

Gliffy: While it may not be the go-to floor plan solution, I’ve included Gliffy on this list anyway, due to it being a well-known diagram and flowchart application. If you’ve used it before, you may want to give it a try to minimize the learning curve and jump right into designing. While you’re at it, you can even plot out your SWOT analysis.

  • 4. Hire an accountant

One of the best pieces of advice Wilson says he can offer a new coffee shop owner is to turn your books over to an accountant. Aside from taking valuable time away from the business, having a numbers expert works in your favor.

“You won’t be as hard on yourself as you sometimes might need to be,” Wilson says. “Plus, you will make assumptions that an accountant wouldn’t make.”

In reality, your accountant is really your small business consultant. Make sure you find someone who believes in you and can help accomplish your business goals. If you’re unable to hire an accountant right away, you can also look to an online option like QuickBooks . The benefit of online accounting software is that you’ll have direct visibility into the day-to-day finances of your business.

Both are great options for managing your finances, and the decision fully depends on your situation and level of expertise.

  • 5. Attain funding from local sources

Finding startup funds for a coffee shop can be difficult. Renson suggests talking with friends and family about investing in your coffee shop first. Present a solid business plan to them and ask them to invest in your business.

If funding via your family isn’t an option, or if you need more cash than your family can provide, Renson suggests looking into local loan options. In some cases, cities offer business assistance programs to offset costs. Consider an SBA-backed loan or see if a local bank or credit union is an option. Keep in mind that any bank loan will require you to show evidence that your business has some traction already. They want to know you’re a reasonable risk. So if you’re not up and running yet, there are other options for bootstrapping your business that you might consider.

  • 6. Save money for your personal expenses

When identifying startup costs , don’t forget that you need to consider your own personal expenses alongside your business. All of your time and energy will be devoted to your new business, which potentially won’t be profitable for around six-months, even if you start bringing in revenue immediately.

So, plan ahead. Renson suggests making sure you set aside enough money to cover your personal expenses for at least six months if not longer. You’ll need to decide whether it’s possible to run your coffee shop while working another job or side gig or if you’ll be able to solely focus on your new business.

You will also want to understand the concept of cash flow . Considering that over half of the businesses that fail are profitable on paper when they fail, you’ll want to be sure you understand how much cash you’ll need on hand.

  • 7. Shop around for everything

While you’re in the planning and funding stages and working through your finances,  keep a list or spreadsheet of all the startup expenses you’re looking at so you can compare prices.

Before you buy, try to get at least two price quotes for every item so you’re not losing money on basic necessities or recurring costs. Use the internet to your advantage and look for the best prices on everything from comfy chairs to espresso machines.

  • 8. Network your heart out

Having a hot location and brewing superior coffee will only get you so far. You need to network to maintain a connection to the area and to attract more customers. Look into joining the local chamber of commerce, a business association, or partner with a local charity. Be visible in your local community and get dedicated partners long before you open your doors.

9. Develop your marketing plan — before you open

If you start marketing the day you open, you’re already behind. On opening day , you want people excited to come in. You’ll want to develop your marketing strategy and begin advertising to potential customers several months before opening.

Affordable marketing options to consider:

  • Partner with other local businesses by providing free coffee in exchange for on-site advertising.
  • Leverage social media as direct communication with your customers.
  • Participate in local events, providing free specialty coffee samples leading up to your grand opening.
  • Do a small direct mail or email campaign that sends coupons to local residents or businesses.
  • Call everyone, including the media, to tell them about your plans to open the shop.

10. Don’t just focus on the interior of the building

It’s likely that you’ll stress over every little detail of your shop, from what paintings to hang on the wall to the point of sale system (POS System) you’ll use. That being said, it can be very easy to ignore the exterior of your shop or coffee cart which directly contrasts with choosing a location with heavy foot traffic.

According to Wilson, you’ll want to “pay attention to the landscaping, signage, and exterior appearance because that’s the first thing people see.” Some people decide whether or not to come in based on their first impression of the building, so make it count.

By creating a clean and unique exterior, you’ll begin to create a buzz in your community. People will start to wonder, who is setting up shop there? Every little thing you can do to attract attention to your coffee shop can serve as a marketing tool.

  • 11. Have a positive attitude

Like every business, you’ll face challenges to get your shop off the ground. Renson says keeping a positive attitude when things aren’t going your way is a must. Not only does it benefit your outlook, but it showcases strong leadership to your employees and a welcoming presence for customers.

Fake it if you have to. If you get in the habit of keeping an optimistic attitude, even if it’s less than genuine to start, you’ll eventually teach yourself to stay upbeat and will keep those around you optimistic and ready to work.

  • 12. Hire slowly

You need help manning the register, waiting on customers, and making drinks, but don’t hire too many people too fast. Renson suggests hiring a few friends, or neighbors who will volunteer to help you out for the first few weeks. Slowly, bring on staff as needed.

Hiring trusted staff can be tough. No matter how well someone does in an interview, you don’t know how well he or she fits until they’re on the floor. Keep a close eye on the register, Renson suggests, and don’t be afraid to let people go if they are hurting the business.

  • 13. Set high standards

It’s okay to set high standards for your employees and overall business. That’s not to say that you should micromanage your employees. You’ll want to focus on effectively training your staff at the start and building an effective workflow that encourages collaboration and high-quality work. Their ability to make good coffee drinks quickly will have an impact on customer loyalty and satisfaction.

Starting an independent coffee shop is hard work, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a long-term struggle. If you focus on establishing these core pieces while developing your coffee shop business plan, you’ll set yourself up for success early on.

A nonprofit Boise store promotes fair trade. Now it’s closing, with even fixtures on sale

Every item at Dunia Marketplace has a story.

Baskets handwoven in South Africa were made of leftover telephone wire , explains JamieLou Delavan, the market’s director.

A selection of purses and crossbody bags were made of recycled rubber tires and stitched by a group of paraplegic patients under rehabilitation at a hospital in Nepal. The bags provide a source of income for their makers and help prevent tires from being burned or dumped, a tag on the items said.

Green vases and candleholders costing $29.99 apiece were made by artisans at a glass-blowing business in the West Bank. A set of wooden serving spoons were carved by members of a tribe in Kenya. Canvas bags, $35, were sewn by refugees in Idaho.

Dunia Marketplace is perhaps the only place in Boise where one could peruse such an array of wares from around the world in a single shop. But the small, nonprofit fair trade store is closing down its storefront in West Downtown by the end of May.

The shop was founded in 1995 by members Hyde Park Mennonite Fellowship. In addition to jewelry and other crafts, it sells coffee, tea, spices, chocolate and olive oil.

For over two decades, the shop operated in an old green house in Hyde Park , a historic district in Boise’s North End neighborhood. It was forced to move out in March 2023 when rent for the space tripled, Delavan said.

After months of searching for a new location, the store reopened at 1718 W. Main St. in August. The space is next to Black Eagle Tattoo and a string of other small shops just past the intersection with the Cabana Inn at the corner.

Business has stalled since the move.

“It’s very, very different from Hyde Park, but we love this space. We love all the light,” Delavan said, gesturing toward the glass door and windows. She noted the bus stop out front and the proximity to the store’s old customer base a few blocks north. “But we’re just not making ends meet. More money is going out than is coming in.”

The store will close Sunday, May 26. Many of its items, sourced from over 80 countries, will remain available on Dunia Marketplace’s website . Delavan also plans to do pop-ups and special events.

She said she’ll miss the chance encounters with people, often refugees, who stroll in after the reading the store’s name. Dunia, also spelled dunya, originates from the Arabic language and means “world” or “earth.”

Delavan lived in Zimbabwe as a child and moved to Boise in 1994. She said the shop has allowed her to connect with a number of people from other cultures.

“The woman who just came in, she said, ‘Dunia — I had to come in because of the name,’” Delavan told the Idaho Statesman. “We’ve had this happen several times. Just recently, there was a gentleman waiting at the bus stop and he came in and said, ‘I saw Dunia. Do you know what this means in Swahili?’”

Boise resident Jan Hanson stopped into the store with her mother Thursday afternoon to look for a wedding or bridal shower gift for her future daughter-in-law. She ended up buying a soapstone sculpture resembling a loose knot and a proofing basket for sourdough bread, which her daughter-in-law likes to bake, she said.

Hanson said she spent about 15 years in Papua New Guinea as a missionary. There, she said many women would make bags by “hand knotting,” rather than by knitting or crocheting.

“I don’t know how to explain it, but everyone did it,” Hanson said. “They walked down the streets chatting and working on the bags.”

She said she’d bring some of the bags home to the U.S., sell them and bring the money back to the village for fair trade. She left the country nearly a decade ago.

Hanson said she enjoys coming into Dunia Marketplace to browse and learn more about where the handicrafts came from.

“I want to support the shop but I also want to support the people who made these products,” Hanson said. “I think fair trade is very important.”

Hand towels on display Thursday for $12.99 each were made in India from reclaimed saris, a brightly-colored traditional garment.

And a small notebook with a purple cover branded Mr. Ellie Pooh was made in Sri Lanka with a mixture of sanitized elephant dung and post-consumer paper.

“The farmers — their farmland would get trampled by the elephants,” Delavan said. “They were always trying to find a way to keep the elephants away from the crops, until they came up with this idea to take recycled paper and elephant dung and make journals. It helps offset the loss of income from the elephants.”

All regular priced items in the store, except for food, are now 20% off. Even the fixtures are for sale.

Delavan said the store has two employees and one regular volunteer. She’s sad to see the storefront go but hasn’t ruling out the possibility of another physical location in the future.

“We haven’t given up,” she said. “Maybe we will find a partner and set-up a kiosk in an existing space or have regular monthly pop-ups. In some ways we are going back to our fair-trade roots, bringing cultural handicrafts to where people already gather.”

Next to speak at Labour's big "first steps for government" unveiling is the shadow health secretary, Wes Streeting.

He opens by saying that "everyone in this room will owe a debt of gratitude to the NHS for a moment in their lives".

He adds that as a cancer survivor, "I owe the NHS my life".

He says he was "fortunate", but "far too many people today are not so lucky", and he accuses the Conservatives of having "driven the NHS into the ground".

"That basic promise that the NHS will be there for us when we need it has been broken," he declares.

Mr Streeting accuses Rishi Sunak of having "given up on the NHS", saying he is "more interested in scapegoats than solutions".

"So it's clear the longer the Conservatives are in power, the longer patients will wait," he says.

Labour's job is to "rescue and renew the service today".

The shadow cabinet minister says the last Labour government "inherited an NHS on its knees", and then "transformed" it: "We did it before and we'll do it again."

The plan to do that is to deliver 40,000 more appointments each week, during evenings and weekends, paid for by cracking down on tax avoidance and non-dom loopholes.

"Healthcare for the many, paid for by the few," he says.

Following on from Angela Rayner’s speech, shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves is now taking to the floor at Labour's "first steps" for government event.

She points to Labour's economic mission, which is to achieve the highest sustained growth in the G7. 

"That's not just about lines on the graph, it's money in the pockets of working people and revenue to rebuild our public services", she says. 

She says this will be achieved through economic stability, as she repeats her mantra that she will "never play fast and loose with the public finances".

"The first step to deliver economic stability is with tough spending rules", she says.

"After the last 14 years, stability is change.

"That will be the bedrock of everything we do."

 Labour's deputy leader is speaking in Essex as Labour launches its "first steps" for government.

Angela Rayner says voters are "crying out" for change, and they are "announcing the first steps for a changed Labour Party".

The plan is both "radical and responsible", she says, and they are "tangible and deliverable... to begin that long journey to national renewal".

"We are under no illusions about the scale of the climb ahead. We aren't promising the Earth, but we are promising what we are confident we can deliver on."

Labour will be clear about what exactly they are promising, and how they will pay for it so voters can hold them accountable, she says.

Ms Rayner goes on to say that she understands voters are cynical, but she asks that voters "leave that pessimism at home".

She says Labour is "committed to a mission-driven government", but "that can only be delivered in lockstep with working people".

Her message to voters is: "We have your back."

She accuses the Tories of having "abused your trust", but declares: "Labour will never take you for granted."

The Labour Party event unveiling its "first steps" for government is under way.

The party's deputy leader, Angela Rayner, is speaking first.

She will be followed by the shadow chancellor, Rachel Reeves.

Sir Keir Starmer will take to the stage after that.

Ahead of the launch of Labour's key pledges, due to kick off in the next half hour, shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves has shared a backstage photo.

She is pictured smiling with the party's deputy leader, Angela Rayner, holding a card detailing the six pledges Sir Keir Starmer will make to voters today.

But a Labour spokesperson was keen to insist that this is not a Blair-style "pledge card", but rather a list of "first steps"...

It is being reported this morning that Labour's campaign chief claimed over £40,000 from the public purse for rent on a constituency home around 12 years ago, despite owning the property next door.

We put the allegation to Pat McFadden on Sky News Breakfast, and he insisted he complied with the rules as they were written at the time.

He said: "I no longer own that property. It was sold six or seven years ago at a loss, which I covered personally."

"I've always complied with the IPSA [Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority] rules. I complied with them throughout. IPSA is the authority that governs all this for MPs.

"So, I've always stuck to the rules, and they have never said there's anything wrong with my living arrangements."

Asked if the taxpayer should be subsidising MPs' property portfolios, he said: "There was no subsidy of a property portfolio. I don't have a property portfolio."

Mr McFadden also rejected the assertion he owned two properties next to each other, and said: "Because of a change in the rules, I had to sell a property and cover the loss personally and financially myself."

Labour's Pat McFadden has insisted Sir Keir Starmer is committed to ending tax breaks for private schools in order to fund his pledge to recruit 6,500 new teachers.

He told Sky News: "I think this is a policy that's fair to the whole country.

"We believe that it's every parent's choice to send their child to private school. 

"If people want to do that, that is absolutely their choice."

But Labour is arguing that VAT from those fees should "be used to benefit the education for the whole country, for the 93% of children that are in the state system".

"That's a fair way to do this," he insisted.

Sir Keir Starmer and his shadow cabinet will be unveiling their "first steps" and key priorities for government later this morning, should they win the next general election ( see the key pledges in the 8.06 post ).

We've just been speaking with Labour's national campaign coordinator, Pat McFadden, ahead of that launch, and we asked how these differ from the "Ed Stone" pledges.

(For our younger readers, or those who've done their best to forget, the "Ed Stone" was a literal stone with Labour's key pledges on them, unveiled by then leader Ed Miliband for the 2015 election).

Mr McFadden said the pledges to be unveiled today are "policies for us going into the next election to answer the question from voters - what would Labour do".

He said Labour is often criticised for just doing down the government, rather than saying what they would do, and so "that's what we're doing today".

Sky's Kay Burley put to the senior Labour MP that the pledges aren't exactly cutting edge, and are what voters expect from a government anyway.

He replied: "I would say this would make a real difference to people's lives."

He raised Liz Truss and the mortgage crisis that followed, the length of NHS waiting lists, and anti-social behaviour as examples of issues currently affecting people that Labour wants to solve.

But he confirmed that they will not be carved onto a stone - Ed Miliband-style - but rather they would form the basis of advertising and campaigning materials.

In January 2023, Rishi Sunak made five promises.

Since then, he and his ministers have rarely missed an opportunity to list them. In case you haven't heard, he promised to:

  • Halve inflation
  • Grow the economy
  • Reduce debt
  • Cut NHS waiting lists and times
  • Stop the boats
