''అతని వేలి ముద్రలు కావాలి'' అనగానే ''అది నాకు వదిలెయ్‌' అంటూ అదే లేడీ ఏజెంట్‌ బార్‌కి వెళ్లి అతడి వేలి ముద్రలు ఏదో డివైస్‌తో స్కాన్‌ చేసి దానిని 'ఆన్‌లైన్‌లో' హీరోకి పంపించేస్తుంది. అతను దాంతో ఫింగర్‌ప్రింట్‌ ఎనేబుల్డ్‌ సెక్యూరిటీ రూమ్‌లోకి యాక్సెస్‌ సాధించేస్తాడు. అతని వాయిస్‌ కమాండ్‌ కావాలి అని ఫోన్లో అడిగినపుడు అది కూడా చేసేస్తుంది ఆ లేడీ ఏజెంట్‌.

మరో సందర్భంలో ఇండియాస్‌ మోస్ట్‌ వాంటెడ్‌ టెర్రరిస్ట్‌ని వాష్‌రూమ్‌లో కిడ్నాప్‌ చేయాలని హీరో ప్లాన్‌ చేస్తాడు. అది కూడా సదరు లేడీ ఏజెంటే చేయాలి. అది చేయడంలో అతనికి వచ్చే ఏకైక డౌట్‌... 'అతడిని ఎత్తగలవా?' అని. దాంతో ఆమె మన హీరోనే ఎత్తి చూపిస్తుంది. దాంతో అతను కన్విన్స్‌ అయిపోతాడు. ఇదంతా చేసేది రీసెర్చ్‌ అండ్‌ అనాలసిస్‌ వింగ్‌ (రా) ఏజెంట్స్‌ కాగా, ఇదంతా జరిగేది అక్కడా, ఇక్కడా కాదు... ఏకంగా పాకిస్తాన్‌లో.

పై సన్నివేశాలు చదివితే ఈ స్పై థ్రిల్లర్‌ని ఎంత సీరియస్‌గా తీసుకోవాలనేది మీకు బోధపడే వుండాలి. మొదటి సన్నివేశంలోనే కార్‌లో రోడ్‌ మీద వెళుతోన్న టెర్రరిస్ట్‌ని పట్టుకోవడానికి కాచుకుని కూర్చున్న ఇండియన్‌ రా ఏజెంట్లు, అతను మాస్క్‌ ధరించి వుండడం వల్ల రిస్క్‌ చేయలేక వదిలేస్తారు. దాంతో హీరో ప్లాన్‌ బి అంటాడు. అదేమిటంటే సరాసరి అతను వెళ్లిన ఇంట్లోకి వెళ్లి అక్కడున్న వారందరినీ చంపేసి ఆ టెర్రరిస్టుని పట్టుకోవడం. అదేదో కార్‌లో వుండగానే చేయవచ్చుగా అంటే, ఆ ముసుగు వేసుకున్నది అతడేనా, కాదా అనేది డౌట్‌ అట.

అందుకని చాలా రిస్క్‌ అట. మరి లోపలికి వెళ్లాక అంతమందిని చంపేసి, మన ఏజెంట్ల ప్రాణాలని కూడా రిస్కులోకి పెట్టి, తీరా పట్టుకున్నాక ఆ ముసుగు వీరుడు వీళ్లు వెతుకుతున్న టెర్రరిస్ట్‌ కాకపోతే రిస్క్‌ కాదా? పాకిస్తానీ ఆర్మీ వచ్చి వీళ్లని వెంబడించినా కానీ ఓపెన్‌ టాప్‌ జీప్‌లో ఒకే ఒకరికి కాలి మీద అయిన గాయంతో అక్కడ్నుంచి బయట పడిపోతారు. సదరు సన్నివేశం ఆ తర్వాత ఈ ఏజెంట్లు చేయబోయే ఘనకార్యాలు ఎలా వుండబోతున్నాయనే దానిని రుచి చూపించి ముగుస్తుంది. అందుకు ఏమాత్రం తగ్గకుండా ముందుగా చెప్పుకున్న పనులన్నీ ఆ తర్వాత మిషన్‌లో హీరో చేయడంతో సినిమా ముగుస్తుంది.

కానీ గోపిచంద్‌ హీరో కనుక సగటు స్పై థ్రిల్లర్‌లా మిషన్లు, మెషీన్‌ గన్లు మాత్రమే వుంటే ఎట్టా? అందుకని మధ్యలో అతనో అండర్‌ కవర్‌ బ్యాంక్‌ ఉద్యోగిగా కనిపిస్తాడు. ఇక్కడ హీరోయిన్‌ ఎంటర్‌ అవుతుంది. వీరి మధ్య కెమిస్ట్రీ ఏదో ఎస్టాబ్లిష్‌ చేస్తారనుకుంటే కుక్కల మేటింగ్‌ టాపిక్‌ని అత్యంత జుగుప్సాకరంగా వర్ణిస్తూ అదే కామెడీ అని ఫీలయ్యారు. కుక్కల మేటింగ్‌ జరిగే నాటికి హీరో హీరోయిన్లు ప్రేమలో పడతారు. ఈలోగా మళ్లీ టెర్రరిస్టులు ఎంటర్‌ అయితే, తన టీమ్‌ మేట్స్‌ని పట్టుకుపోయిన వారి కోసం హీరో పాకిస్తాన్‌ వెళతాడు. వెళతాడు, వెళ్లి ఒక లేడీ ఏజెంట్‌ సాయంతో పైన చెప్పినవన్నీ చేస్తాడు.

అత్యంత చాకచక్యంగా ఇండియాతో పాటు వివిధ దేశాలలో భయంకరమైన దాడులు చేసే టెర్రరిస్టులని బురిడీ కొట్టించి మన హీరో చూపించే 'చాణక్యం' చూస్తే అన్ని దాడులు చేయనిచ్చిన ఇండియన్‌ ఆర్మీని, అమెరికన్‌ ఇంటిలిజెన్స్‌ ఏజెన్సీలకి ఈ సినిమా చూపించాలనిపిస్తుంది. ఇలాంటి సినిమాలకి పెద్ద బడ్జెట్‌ ఇస్తే 'ఏక్‌ థా టైగర్‌'లా బ్రహ్మాండంగా తీసి వుండేవాళ్లమని సాకులు చెప్పుకునే వీలుండేది... గూఢచారి రాకపోతే. ఇంతకంటే చాలా తక్కువ బడ్జెట్‌లో అంత మంచి థ్రిల్లింగ్‌ స్పై థ్రిల్లర్‌ తీసిన అడివి శేష్‌ బృందం ఇలాంటి చిత్రాలకి కావాల్సిన కథ, కథనాలు ఎంత పకడ్బందీగా వుండాలో చూపించింది.

కానీ తెలివితేటలు, మలుపులతో కూడిన కథ, కథనాల కంటే మసాలా అంశాలు మస్ట్‌గా వుండాలని తిరు ఫీలయ్యాడు. అందుకే అంత సీరియస్‌ మిషన్‌ మధ్యలో వున్న హీరోతో కూడా డ్యూయెట్‌ పాడించాడు. అఫ్‌కోర్స్‌ డ్రీమ్‌లో అనుకోండి. కాకపోతే అప్పుడో సాంగ్‌కి బ్రేక్‌ తీసుకునే వీలుందనిపించడమే గొప్ప విషయం. అలాగే ఈ స్పై థ్రిల్లర్‌లోకి కుక్కల కామెడీ పెట్టే స్పేస్‌ క్రియేట్‌ చేసుకోవడమూ మెచ్చుకోవాల్సిన అంశం. అభినయ పరంగా గోపిచంద్‌ ఒక్కడే కాస్త ఎఫర్ట్‌ పెట్టినట్టు అనిపించాడు. హీరోయిన్ల గురించి ఎంత తక్కువ మాట్లాడుకుంటే అంత మంచిది.

ముఖ్యంగా జరీన్‌ ఖాన్‌ గురించి. డాషింగ్‌ అండ్‌ డైనమిక్‌ ఏజెంట్‌లా అనిపించాల్సిన ఆమె ఇచ్చిన ఎక్స్‌ప్రెషన్స్‌ అయితే న భూతో న భవిష్యతి. క్లూలెస్‌ అనే పదానికి హ్యూమన్‌ డెఫినిషన్‌లా కనిపించింది. ఈ తరహా చిత్రాలకి అవసరమైన సాంకేతికత కూడా 'చాణక్య'లో లోపించింది. తెర వెనుక ఏ డిపార్ట్‌మెంట్‌ నుంచి స్టాండ్‌ అవుట్‌ అవుట్‌పుట్‌ అయితే రాలేదనే చెప్పాలి. ఖర్చు పెట్టినా కానీ యాక్షన్‌ సన్నివేశాలలో కూడా థ్రిల్‌ లోపించింది. ఒకటీ అరా దృశ్యాలలో చూపించిన తెలివితేటలు మినహా దర్శకుడు తిరు ఒక సగటు స్పై థ్రిల్లర్‌కి కావాల్సిన థ్రిల్లింగ్‌ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే రాసుకోలేకపోయాడు.

పాకిస్తాన్‌కి వెళ్లి ఒక రెస్క్యూ ఆపరేషన్‌ చేయడమనే ప్లాట్‌లో వున్న ఎక్సయిట్‌మెంట్‌ స్క్రీన్‌పైన ఎగ్జిక్యూషన్‌లో కనిపించలేదు. ప్రొడక్షన్‌ డిజైన్‌ పరంగా లుక్‌ అయితే రాబట్టారు కానీ ఆసక్తిగా వీక్షించే దృశ్యాలని మలచలేకపోయారు. సగటు మాస్‌ చిత్రాన్ని ఆశించినట్టయితే ఎలా అనిపిస్తుందో కానీ, యాక్షన్‌ థ్రిల్లర్‌ జోనర్‌కి మాత్రం జస్టిస్‌ చేయలేక 'చాణక్య' చతికిలపడ్డాడు. బాటమ్‌ లైన్‌: ఇదేమి 'రా'?! - గణేష్‌ రావూరి

Gopichand and his team have dared to release their new film Chanakya amidst the huge craze of Sye Raa which was released a few days back. Let’s see whether this spy thriller has anything interesting in store for us or not.

Indian government is on the look out of a dreaded terrorist named Qureshi(Rajesh Khattar) who has now camped in Pakistan. To bring him back, RAW appoints a dare and devil officer Arjun for the task. How does Arjun enter Pakistan? How will he nab such a dreaded terrorist? and where do Mehreen and Zareen Khan feature in this set up? To know this, you have to watch the film on the big screen.

Plus Points:

As usual, Gopichand does a sincere job in his role. He looks fit as the RAW agent and shoulders the film throughout. Be it his fights or dialogue delivery, Gopichand has done a commendable job in the film. Nasser was perfect as the RAW chief and brought depth to the film.

The director starts the film with a good action sequence which looks engaging. Zareen Khan as the RAW secret agent makes a decent Telugu debut. She did her supporting role well. Mehreen was just about okay in her role and had nothing much to do. Sunil and Ali did well in their limited comedy roles.

Upen Patel is the surprise package of the film as he did the role of a stylish villian superbly. All his scenes with Gopichand have come out well. Certain action thrills based in Karachi have been planned well. The pre-climax scenes have been handled well and evoke a decent curiosity.

Minus Points:

Firstly, the film is loosely based on several Hindi spy thrillers in recent times. It is heavily inspired from Nikhil Advani’s D Day. After starting the film with a bang, the makers bring in the same old comedy, song and dance routine. Gopichand’s romantic episodes with Mehreen are boring and dilute the proceedings completely.

Upon this, two songs come in and side track the film at crucial times. One of the biggest drawbacks is the disappointing screenplay which lacks the grip. Some good thrills are followed by silly and routine scenes. Thrillers need to be crisp and fast but sadly that is not the case with this film.

Also, there are way too many cinematic liberties which have been taken. Gopichand moves freely in Karachi and handles things swiftly in many areas and this looks over the top. Also, after all the hue and cry, you feel that the climax will be special but sadly things are ended in a hurried manner.

Technical Aspects:

Camera work in the film is pretty decent as it manages to show Karachi and the terrorist set up in a decent manner. The production design needs a special mention as they have re designed Karachi and a few other areas in a believable manner.

Music is okay but the background score by Sricharan is pretty good. Editing is below par as the romantic track could have been cut short to make things crisp. This whole dog mating episode looks silly and could have been avoided.

Coming to the director Thiru, he has done a below par job with his narration. He has rehashed all the spy thrillers and got his story ready which looks decent. He also starts the film well and gives it a good tone and set up. But he too falls prey for unnecessary commercial aspects and derails the film. In the second half, he had too much on the plate and couldn’t handle it. That is the reason he rushed things with his improper screenplay which has many logical errors and questions unanswered.

On the whole, Chanakya is a routine spy thriller which works in a strictly few areas. While the action and Gopichand lead from the front, dull narration and poor screenplay take the film down in no time. Even though the film looks stylish, there is nothing new you will see here in this action thriller. So, go in with all your expectations in check.

What’s it about?

Arjun (Gopichand), a RAW officer, lands in trouble when his cover is blown in a mission. His fellow officers are kidnapped by mafia don Mehmood Qureshi (Rajesh Khattar). They are taken to Karachi in Pakistan. Indian Government skirts off his RAW identity as it doesn’t want to take chances with G8 Summit around the corner. But Arjun vows to bring his friends to India in 10 days and heads to Karachi. A RAW informer Zubeda (Zareen Khan) is there to help him in Pakistan. How would he succeed in this mission?

Gopichand’s ‘Chanakya’ doesn’t require much analysis. After watching a romantic track shot on Gopichand and Mehreen that appears in the first half-hour itself, we conclude that the film has gone to the dogs literally. The film begins with a heroic action episode of Arjun (Gopichand) and his fellow officers nabbing a terrorist. This episode is shot interestingly and sets the right tone. But soon, the film forgets about the spy elements and moves on to focus on the romantic track between Gopichand, a bank employee and a client (Mehreen). Gopichand is working as a bank employee to cover his RAW identity.

The nearly 45-minutes lengthy romantic track that involves the sequence of Mehreen approaching Gopichand seeking his female puppy for the mating of her male pet dog. The conversation between them about this ‘mating’ totally makes you cringe. By the end of the first half, I felt of leaving the theater. Fortunately, director Thiru has come to his senses to focus on the real spying drama post-interval. The second half is all about the ‘Operation Chanakya’ – a RAW agent rescuing his four officers from Pakistan. Though it does provide some tense moments and some interesting sequences, even the second half is predictable to the core.

All the actors including male lead Gopichand have done routinely. There is no appreciative performance from any actor. Other than the cinematography (which is first-rate), no technician has put in the best effort either. Director Thiru’s story and narration are too weak.

Bottom-line: Gopichand's ‘Chanakya’ is a boring spy thriller. ​

By the time Gopichand's Arjun reveals in a throwaway dialogue why in the world the film is named Chanakya, the sigh that escapes one'6s lips is not of surprise but sheer exhaustion. Go watch this one at your own risk! (more)

This mission is far from interesting

Want a smart home-grown spy thriller? Revisit last year's release, Goodachari. Or for a different dimension of Agents and their lives, there's also The Family Man web series. Chanakya had the opportunity to up the game and present something refreshing, but it squanders it away. (more)

The 2019 Telugu-language spy action thriller Chanakya is produced by Rama Brahmam Sunkara and directed by Thiru under the AK Entertainments banner. Gopichand, Zareen Khan, and Mehreen Pirzada play the main roles in the movie, which also marks Thiru’s and Khan’s Telugu film debuts as directors and actors, respectively. In supporting roles are Nassar, Rajesh Khattar, Upen Patel, Sunil, Jayaprakash, Raja Chembolu, and Adarsh Balakrishna. After Pantham, this movie is Gopichand & Mehreen’s second joint venture.Sricharan Pakala and Vishal Chandrasekhar composed the movie’s soundtrack.

The movie centres on Arjun, an undercover agent who must work quickly to free his comrades who have been abducted by Sohail, a terrorist from Pakistan. After his cover is blown and he is disowned by his own agency, he embarks on the rescue mission in Karachi with the assistance of another RAW agent named Zubeida. October 5, 2019, saw the theatrical debut of Chanakya.

RAW chief Kulkarni enlists agent Arjun and his team to go after Abdul Salim, the right hand of India’s most wanted terrorist, Ibrahim Qureshi. As soon as Salim gets there, Arjun and his comrades manage to take out every guard and capture Salim. Meanwhile, Arjun returns to his life as Ramakrishna, a banker, and finds out from Kulkarni that Salim will be sent to prison per the directives. Arjun forbids him from doing so out of concern that someone might try to save him. However, Salim is sent away in a police van with additional cars. But Salim is freed when masked gunmen from a helicopter attack the cars. It is revealed that Arjun and his comrades are the assailants once he gets on the helicopter. Arjun shoots Salim because he believes he is unnecessary and that his presence would jeopardise the security of the country.

Later, while Arjun is out on a date with his girlfriend Aishwarya, he gets attacked by some goons. This leads to a fight, during which Arjun finds out that his teammates have been taken prisoner. It is none other than Ibrahim Qureshi’s son Sohail who is the kidnapper. He challenges Arjun to travel to Karachi and save his comrades. As a result, Arjun approaches his agency for assistance but is turned away since his cover was exposed. After obtaining entry into Pakistan through his own means, he meets Zubeida, a RAW agent. In order to find out where Sohail is going, they all set up CCTV cameras along his route.Observing that there is no signal every time his cars go by, Arjun surmises that the commissioner of traffic police is gathering intelligence regarding Sohail’s whereabouts. At a bar, Zubeida engages the commissioner and assists Arjun in obtaining the officer’s digital fingerprints and voice activation to unlock his laptop. When he hears of someone breaking in covertly, the officer rushes back, but in vain.

After learning that Sohail will be attending a function at a hotel, Arjun and Zubeida decide to abduct him. When everything goes wrong, Arjun arrives and takes Sohail hostage. But when Arjun and Zubeida get to their hiding place, they discover that they actually took Sohail’s body double rather than the real Sohail. After an enraged Arjun shoots him, he flees and attacks Qureshi’s goons as they approach. After Arjun is shot during the ensuing chase, Ibrahim launches a manhunt for him. Arjun, however, escapes and is eventually saved by Zubeida. After obtaining the CCTV cameras that Zubeida had set up, Sohail murders Arjun’s friend while it is being recorded.

But when Arjun orders Zubeida to fast-forward the video, he discovers that his friend had used Morse code to communicate with him. By displaying the video of Arjun and his teammates in Karachi, they discover that Sohail is preparing to escape Arjun’s teammates and instigate an attack on the G8 Summit in order to frame India. India would be humiliated and this would be perceived as an attempt by India to bring shame to Pakistan. Arjun reunites with Kulkarni to stop this and carry out Mission Chanakya; it is then revealed that Kulkarni instructed him to meet Zubeida.

Chanakya Movie Review: Chanakya is a spy thriller drama, directed by Tamil filmmaker Thiru, which has Tollywood hot Chunk Gopichand, Mehreen Kaur Pirzada and Zareen Khan in the lead roles. The movie Chanakya has hit the theaters today. The team is very confident in the content of this film. It is bankrolled by AK Entertainments and it has the music by Vishal Chandrasekhar.

Story: RAW appoints a dare and devil officer Arjun (Gopichand) to nab a dreaded terrorist named Qureshi (Rajesh Khattar) and his son Sohail (Upen Patel). How does Arjun nab terrorist Qureshi and Sohail? What are the roles of Mehreen Kaur and Zareen Khan in this set up? To know this, one should watch the movie on silver screen.

Performance: Gopichand carries the entire movie on his shoulder. He has done a commendable job in the film. His body language is different for this movie. He looks terrific in the action sequences. Nasser is perfect as the RAW chief and brought depth to the film. Bollywood actress Zareen Khan as the RAW secret is ok. Mehreen Kaur Pirzada is fine in her role. Sunil and Ali get limited screen space and became successful to impress the viewers. Upen Patel is the surprise package of Chanakya and he is good in the role of villain. The rest of the cast performed accordingly.

Technical: The dialogues are fine. The music of Vishal Chandrasekhar and SriCharan Pakala are just ok. The placement of three songs in the movie looks like a speed breaker. The background score are impressive. The art direction is good. Editing of Marthand K Venkatesh could have been better. The best part about Chanakya is well-designed action sequences. The production values are good.

Analysis: Chanakya falls somewhere in between, neither keeping the viewers on the edge-of-the-seat nor entertaining them. Screenplay and narration are the biggest drawbacks. Of course, there are few good moments in Chanakya that keep the viewers engaged but the director Thiru failed to maintain the same standards throughout the movie.

Chanakya movie review: Gopichand's inconsequential spy thriller wages war against human intelligence

Directed by Thiru, Chanakya, a spy drama, is an assault on the senses, and it’s so badly written that nothing saves it from being a colossal bore.

In Gopichand-starrer Chanakya , which focuses on a RAW agent’s covert mission to catch a dreaded criminal, the war is not between India and Pakistan. It is not even about a secret war raging between India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Here, Thiru, the director of the film, wages a war on the collective human intelligence. This is a film where mating of dogs is used as an allegory to a budding love story between its lead characters. This is also a film where a terrorist’s son challenges a RAW agent to prove his track record in his own backyard. Leave alone the lack of nuance while portraying the geo-politics of the region, the film does not even do justice to the genre. It treats covert missions as a child’s play. Chanakya commits the crime of being a big bore for most part of its narrative.

The film follows the journey of Arjun (Gopichand), one of RAW’s best agents, who also leads a double life as Ramakrishna, who works as a bank employee. For years, RAW has been planning to capture Qureshi, who has been behind some of the biggest terror attacks in India. Despite knowing Qureshi is in Pakistan, RAW is helpless. In one of his missions, Arjun goes to Syria to nab a key member of Qureshi’s gang. It sets him off on a journey which brings him face to face with Qureshi’s son Sohail (Upen Patel). The rest of the story is about whether Arjun would succeed in his mission or not.

Telugu cinema has had its own share of spy thrillers in recent times. Films like Goodachari   and PSV Garuda Vega have already set the bar for what to expect from films in this genre. Chanakya is nowhere in the near vicinity. In its attempt to make Arjun’s mission more personal, the film loses sight of what it is aiming to achieve.

One of the key questions in the film is about the value of human lives, especially those who fight and die for the country. Although there is a reference to this topic in the film, the context is not properly established, which makes it tougher to root for Arjun’s journey. He is a secret agent gone rogue, and that too for a personal reason, but what derails the film the most is how it treats the conflict between Arjun and Sohail. At no point does it feel like Chanakya is about an Indian spy risking his life to rescue someone in Pakistan. The story might have unfolded in a big Indian city, and it would not make a difference. The idea of the son of India’s most wanted terrorist challenging a RAW agent to come to Pakistan to prove his skills is not only silly but unbelievably stupid.

Chanakya has plenty of such poorly written sequences. It makes no effort to show a different side of a spy’s life or even narrate its story in an engaging manner. The only time when the film is mildly engaging is when all the characters are on the run. The background score tries to build the tempo to a crescendo to convey the stakes involved.

For Gopichand, this could have been a perfect film to do justice to his action-hero image. But for all the drama and action, Chanakya does not even offer a single scene where Gopichand, the actor, stands out. Once again, it is the writing which fails him. The stunt choreography too is quite mediocre for most part. The only silver lining is an elaborate chase sequence set in Karachi. The romantic subplot between Gopichand and Mehreen Perizada is terrible as it hampers the proceedings. Zareen Khan, who plays a secret agent in Pakistan, makes an effort to leave an impression, but there is barely any emotion even when she opens up to him about her past. Upen is treated like a cardboard character, just like how he has been stereotyped in most of his other films.

Thiru does not quite strike a balance between what he wants to say through the film and what he shows. On one hand, it sounds like a simple story about a spy who has to go on a mission to Pakistan, but Chanakya does not quite get the rhythm right until quite late into the narrative.

When a spy drama is treated as a masala movie where characters openly challenge each other, you know it has landed in a quagmire. And we are sucked into it too. Two big thumbs down for this film.

Chanakya Movie Review: A dismal action thriller

Chanakya follows the life and adventures of RAW agent Arjun (Gopichand) and his friends at the academy. The story progresses as they begin to lead double lives as undercover agents, with Arjun's alter ego being Ramakrishna, a bank employee leading a simple life. His targets are Qureshi and his son Sohail (Upen Patel), who lead terrorist operations from Pakistan. An unannounced and unexplained slip up leads to Qureshi capturing Arjun’s four friends and shipping them to Karachi. The rest of the film follows Arjun’s heroic and clever attempts to rescue his friends and take down the villain.

To say the least, this film is uneven. The characters speak in the most pedestrian manner about issues of national interest and safety, making this seem like a high school drama made with a grand budget. Arjun, who swears by his duty, suddenly quits to save his friends. During a serious scene, he confronts his Chief saying, “What’s the use of RAW, if it's not able to save its own soldiers' lives?” Within a few minutes he undergoes a sudden transformation and ends up giving patriotic speeches. Shifts like this are both disconcerting and confusing. 

Aren’t RAW agents sworn to secret lives and detachment to worldly emotions? When did this become personal? Why is a trained agent trying to save his counterparts on his own? And why are agents trained from the same academy hanging out together with their families in bars in the same city? Where is the discretion? These, and other such questions kept bugging me throughout the runtime. 

The portrayal of RAW as a simple, mediocre and superficial agency is what annoyed me the most. The other thing was the characters behaving erratically. For instance, Zareen Khan who plays a RAW agent in Karachi, Zubeida (the most generic Pakistani name they could find) has her gun pointed at Arjun (who has gone rogue) one second, but the next second she is doing his bidding, going against direct orders. 

Also it’s a little difficult to take the film seriously when the hero plans an encounter with the villain in Karachi and the shot cuts to a hotel on Necklace Road. Zareen Khan and Gopichand have a whole conversation with Hussain Sagar lake in the backdrop. 

Mehreen is there in the film as well. Her character is the usual single child bereft of parents’ love who likes to act cute and stupid. But let’s not even go there.

There's a lot going on in this film, but nothing really excites us. There are a lot of heroics and nationalistic dialogues to mask the emptiness but they barely do their job. In a word, the film is generic. If the director thought he was dumbing it down for the galleries, he perhaps went too far.

Chanakya Review, What’s Behind?

Gopichand is in desperate need of a hit. He teamed up with Tamil director Thiru who is known for making action thrillers. Did the duo succeed in their mission to thrill Telugu audience with the spy thriller Chanakya? Let’s discuss in the actual review part.

Chanakya Story Review:

An undercover RAW Marshall Arjun (Gopichand) leads a team of five agents and with 100% success rate he is a connoisseur in capturing terrorists. In order to maintain secrecy over his identity, Arjun works at a bank and goes by the name Ramakrishna. Aishwarya (Mehreen Pirzada), a prime customer of the bank falls in love with Arjun. Meanwhile, as a counter to the killing of an ISI leader, the agency chief Ibrahim Qureshi (Rajesh Khattar) and his son Sohail (Upen Patel) kidnap four boys in Arjun’s group. When higher officials are averse to take the risk, Arjun neglecting the orders from his boss dares to go Karachi, bring back his friends home safely. Will the mission Chanakya be accomplished?

Chanakya Artists, Technicians Review:

It was widely speculated that, Chanakya is rip-off of Hindi hit Ek Tha Tiger. Yes, partly the film has shades of the Salman Khan starrer. In the original, the romance part was also enchanting, wherein Thiru used his creative brain just for some key episodes and action sequences. Romantic track indeed is the most boring part in Chanakya with lack of freshness in the scenes and routine comedy. The covert operation in the beginning, interval bang and few twists in the second half add to positives, whereas the list of negatives is big. Vishal Chandrasekhar has provided mediocre sound tracks and background score was also disenchanting. Marthand K Venkatesh included bunch of unnecessary episodes which kill the interest. Vetri Palanisamy’s camera work was top-notch. Production values of AK Entertainments are good in standard.

Onto performances, Gopichand looked good and fit to play the role of a RAW Agent, though he steals the show with wonderful performance. He was too good in action part. Mehreen Pirzada looked glamorous in an insignificant role. Zareen Khan oozed oomph and she was given better scope but wasted opportunity. Nassar is regular; Rajesh Khattar and Upen Patel did not make strong impact. Sunil fails another time to offer comedy.

Chanakya Review, Rating Analysis:

Every film has its own soul or an emotion on which the entire story is cooked up. Films with strong emotion will always connect to audience. Coming to Chanakya, the film lacked the strong and emotionally connecting point. In patriotic films, protagonist will always fight for his country, not just for his family or friends. Director Thiru missed this logic as his focus was only on offering few twists in between.

First half begins on bang with Gopichand and team conducting a secret operation to nab a terrorist leader in Syria. That’s it. After the very interesting take off, the story becomes monotonous from here on with unpleasant romantic track and meandering comedy. Only towards the interval, things come back on track, but it was too late.

Latter half is all about Gopichand entering Karachi off the record to save his friends from the ISI batch. The process of Gopichand meeting the RAW team in Pakistan was a routine stuff. However, the body double revelation brings back some interest. The action episodes in between are astonishing. Then, movie ends with another twist which actually doesn’t give completeness to the film and our crave for more is not served.

Al in all, Chanakya is another routine spy thriller with few twists here and there. Gopichand played his part efficiently and visuals looked grand. But, all the efforts go in vain because of the poor writing and execution. The director did not get much assistance from the technical team as well. CJ goes with 2.5 stars and the film may not give any competition to the mammoth Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy starring Chiranjeevi.

Chanakya Review – A dull action flop !

Macho hero Gopichand has pinned a lot of hopes on his next film Chanakya which is billed as a spy thriller. Going through a lean patch with a spate of forgettable films, Gopichand is now very confident of making a strong comeback with this film. The interesting promos have generated decent buzz in audience and Gopichand’s impressive transformation is going to be one of the biggest assets for the film.

Chanakya has Gopichand playing a spying agent working for RAW and the story is set in the backdrop of Karachi. Directed by Thiru, the film has Mehreen Pirzada as the leading lady.

RAW agent Arjun ( Gopichand ) captures a dreaded criminal Abdul Saleem in a dangerous mission. Saleem’s boss Qureshi is a high profile Pakistani terrorist leader, who abducts a team of RAW agents in counter to saleem’s capture. Rest of the story is how the RAW and Pakistani terrorist group plan attacks and counter attacks to release their respective team members

The film takes off on high note with an action episode by Indian RAW agents. Arjun and his team attack terrorist camp and captures Qureshi gang’s key person Abdul Saleem. After that undercover RAW officer Arjun’s mainstream life in Delhi is shown. The other avatar of Arjun is a bank officer Ramakrishna. Most the first half is then filled with comedy track involving Mehreen, Gopichand , Suneel , Ali and Raghubabu . Suneel and Gopichand comedy is just mediocre but the other track is disgusting

Ali is a veterinary doctor, Mehreen’s pet dog is in need of mating. The related cheap comedy track is about Mehreen pleading Gopichand to allow his female dog to mate with her male one, and references to usage of condoms on dogs. The first half is pretty flat except couple of action scenes.

In second half things are relatively better as Qureshi and his son Sohail are entered. The film focusses on the core point of counter attacks. But the major problem with CHANAKYA film is , India Vs Pakistan cross border terrorism , RAW intelligence such high profile topics and supposedly super-secret operations are written the way Malakpet Sub Inspector deals with local Gudumba or Matka dealers. There is another character, informer, played by zareen khan . Raw officer Arjun operates in Karachi , his super abilities lack any thrill due to poor direction

Production values are good, few action episodes are mounted at bigger scale. On technical side, cinematography is the best part, background score and thrill factor in action blocks are mediocre. The director Thiru has failed in script work to engage the audience

• Poor First half
• Cheap comedy track on dogs
• No excitement in this supposedly action thriller

‘ Chanakya ‘ is another disappointing film for Gopichand. A Bigger canvas film with its silliest execution tests patience. For Few action sequences, good amount of budget has been spent but in vain.
