The Opportunity:
This post is full-time (40 hours per week). Applications, from registered clinicians, are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in the National CJD Research & Surveillance Unit (NCJDRSU), Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences, University of Edinburgh.
The post is part of the NCJDRSU’s programme of surveillance of CJD in the UK, with associated research. The principal duties involve the clinical assessment of referred suspect CJD cases, the collection of clinical and epidemiological data, and associated research. The post is with the University of Edinburgh, but an honorary clinical contract with NHS Lothian will be awarded. There are opportunities for training, teaching and clinical session attendance within the Edinburgh Department of Clinical Neurosciences.
The post is, in the first instance, from 01.06.24, although there is open to individual discussion. The present end date is 31.03.25; depending on the possible renewal of funding, the post might be extended for a further year.
Your skills and attributes for success:
- Time management skills, ability to prioritise

- Excellent inter-personal verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to present complex issues to non-specialists, including patients and their families
An Honorary NHS contract will be sought for the successful post holder. You therefore must be eligible to hold an honorary contract with NHS Lothian, and must also be registered with the General Medical Council.
Salary will be determined on the basis of previous service in the NHS training grades. Normally you will be matched to your current incremental point or nearest equivalent. If you are currently a member of the NHS Pension Scheme and are employed in a clinical post it may be possible for you to remain a member of the NHS Pension Scheme.

How to become
How to become a clinical scientist.
You can get into this job through:
- a university course
- an apprenticeship
- an NHS training programme for non-graduates
You can do a degree to start your training as a clinical scientist.
Subjects include:
- life sciences
- biology or biochemistry
- biomedical science
- medical physics
After completing your degree, you can apply for the NHS Scientific Training Programme (STP) . During the 3-year programme, you'll combine employment in the NHS with study for a postgraduate master's degree.
Entry requirements
You'll usually need:
- 2 or 3 A levels, or equivalent, including a science, for a degree
- a degree in a relevant subject for postgraduate study

Apprenticeship
You could apply for a place on a higher or degree apprenticeship, such as:
- Healthcare Science Associate Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship

When you finish your apprenticeship, you can apply to join one of the NHS training programmes and continue your training to become a clinical scientist.

Other Routes
If you do not have a degree, you could apply to join the NHS Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) .

What you’ll do
What you'll do, day-to-day tasks.
There are 4 main areas of clinical science . Depending on your area you could:
- analyse data from genetic material to trace how diseases develop
- research and test methods to improve diagnoses and treatments
- assess abnormalities in different parts of the body
- study cells or diagnose and analyse blood disorders
- investigate the causes of illness or death
- instruct medical staff on how to use instruments and equipment
Working environment
You could work in an NHS or private hospital, in a laboratory or at a university.
You may need to wear protective clothing.

With experience you could:
- apply for the NHS Higher Specialist Scientist Training programme
- become a consultant clinical scientist or move into healthcare management
- work in research and study for a PhD
- teach in higher education

University of Cambridge has a part-time post for a Research Assistant keen to develop their qualitative and palliative and end of life care research skills.
We are looking for a colleague to work with Dr Ben Bowers, Wellcome Post-Doctoral Fellow and Palliative Care Nurse Consultant, Professor Stephen Barclay, Professor of Palliative Care and colleagues on two complimentary research projects.
1) Developing a qualitative study exploring how healthcare professionals can best support members of often under-served Muslim communities with end-of-life symptom control. This involves helping co-design the study with public contributors from Muslim communities and preparing competitive grant applications.
2) A qualitative study investigating the use of injectable end-of-life symptom control medications at home, involving interviews and focus groups with patients, families and healthcare professionals. The post holder will assist colleagues with the analysis stages. This study is part of a larger Wellcome project and will help advance understanding of where and how systems for using injectable medications can be improved.
We are looking for candidates with experience of developing sensitive research with under-served communities, qualitative/mixed methods research skills and an interest in clinically focused UK palliative and end of life care research. The successful candidate will be a member of PELiCam, a friendly, dynamic and inclusive leading Palliative and End of Life Care Research Group. They will have access to a community of researchers and supported to advance their skills and competences in this exciting interdisciplinary field.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in health, sociology or psychology-related subject or equivalent qualifications or possess equivalent experience in a relevant discipline and experience of working in a research environment. Practical experience in conducting palliative care research and engaging sensitively with under-represented communities is essential, ideally including members of Muslim communities. They should demonstrate adeptness in collaborative teamwork, effective communication with public contributors, clinical and research colleagues, conducting literature reviews, qualitative research methods and analyses, presenting research to various audiences, and writing successful grant applications.
The post is funded for 16 months at 40% FTE (15 hours per week), requiring the post-holder to work in the Department for at least one to two days per week. You’ll be based in the Primary Care Unit, East Forvie Building, Cambridge Biomedical Campus (approx. 2 miles south of city centre).
