How-To Geek

What is adobe creative cloud, and is it worth it.

You can now get all of Adobe's industry-leading apps with one subscription. We've got all the info on the Creative Cloud!

Quick Links

Every adobe program, under one service, what does adobe creative cloud include, is adobe creative cloud worth it.

Adobe Creative Cloud  combines all of Adobe's industry-leading applications in one service. Find out what a subscription includes, and who should use it.

If you work in design, media, marketing, or photography, you've likely already used one or more of the programs in the Adobe Creative software suite. Apps like Photoshop, Premiere, and Lightroom are the industry standard for creatives.

However, Adobe's  individual software licenses  used to be prohibitively expensive---especially if you're a freelancer or independent professional.

Creative Cloud (CC) is Adobe's way of making a wide array of its programs available as a service. Instead of a one-time purchase, you pay a monthly subscription fee. The fee varies depending on how many apps you use. CC also includes additional services to improve your creative workflows, such as 100 GB of cloud storage, a customizable portfolio website via Adobe Portfolio, and access to Adobe's extensive font library.

The options and prices for individuals are:

  • All apps ($52.99 per month/$599.88 per year): You get access to the entire array of Creative Cloud apps, including Premiere Pro, After Effects, Illustrator, and Adobe XD.
  • Photography Plan ($9.99 per month/$119.88 per year): This option provides photographers with access to Lightroom, Photoshop , and 20 GB of cloud storage. You can also opt for a plan that includes 1 TB of cloud storage for $19.99 per month.
  • Single apps:  You can also subscribe to each app individually. Single-app plans range from $4.99 to $20.99 per month, depending on the software you choose. These subscriptions also include 100 GB of cloud storage and access to Adobe Fonts.

Individual Creative Cloud plans are a great deal if you're a creative professional who relies on one or more Adobe programs.

If you're a business owner who also needs features like workflow management and collaborative video editing, check out Adobe's business plans.

In addition to Adobe's video- and image-editing programs that have been around for decades, you also get access to apps and services that are fairly new. This can be a great way to learn new skills.

The following are some of Adobe's newer services with which you might be unfamiliar:

  • Spark: These apps allow you to quickly create web-based content on both mobile and the web. Spark Page allows you to make responsive web pages. You can also produce graphics for social media with Spark Post, or create short video stories with Spark Video.
  • Premiere Rush: An alternative to Premiere Pro, this program is for online content creators who want to edit videos quickly. It features a streamlined interface with fewer features. Premiere Rush projects can also be opened in Premiere Pro for further editing. An integrated mobile app is also included.
  • XD:  This User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) design tool for web and mobile is particularly for those who formerly used Photoshop and Illustrator to design interfaces.
  • Portfolio:  This tool allows you to build a personalized website to show off your work---especially anything you've created with the Adobe software suite. It's included with most Adobe Creative Cloud plans.
  • Fonts:  Most plans also provide access to Adobe's comprehensive library of fonts , which are compatible with every program in the CC.

While it's unlikely one person would need every service in Creative Cloud, it's nice to keep your options open. You can install or uninstall each Adobe program individually.

There's a case to be made that it's more expensive to pay for a subscription long-term, rather than paying for a single, permanent software license. However, the consistent updates, cloud services, and access to new features make Adobe Creative Cloud a fantastic value. The all apps plan is great for creative professionals and content creators, as most use some combination of these programs.

If you ever switch careers or no longer need any of the apps, you can simply end your subscription. There are also several affordable alternatives to the Adobe suite you might want to check out.

Students or teachers who have the credentials should also look into Adobe's student pricing. An all-access plan costs $19.99 per month for the first year, and then $29.99 for the second and onward. To be eligible, all you need is a university email address or a document proving your institutional affiliation.

Adobe also offers a free trial of CC, so you can try out the service before you subscribe.

You’re forgiven if you are confused by all the Adobe Creative Cloud apps. After all, we’ve all heard of Photoshop and Acrobat. But what are the other apps in the Creative Cloud? Well, you’ve come to the right place to find out. Join us as we explore them all, as well as explain the best way to purchase them.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Adobe has gathered the apps that are most used by artists of all types and assigned them to their Creative Cloud. It’s a way of seeing and marketing their products, especially in their subscription-only model of software sales. Adobe has been selling their software this way for 10 years now. It has benefitted their revenue, reduced piracy, and lowered the bar for access to their products.

This doesn’t mean that the programs are cheap by any means. But offering monthly payments makes legitimate software more accessible to users. It also means that updates are easily available, and users know there are no unexpected bills for upgrading to a new version.

The best value is available to students and teachers in accredited academic institutions. Although there are no discounts for individual apps, the whole of the Creative Cloud can be subscribed to for less than the cost of most of the big programs. This is great news for teachers, but perhaps still pricey for some students.

In most other cases, the All Apps subscription will save you money if you use three or more of the apps. And will then open up access to all the others in the cloud.

So, let’s take a look at what you can find in the Creative Cloud. We’ll give you a quick summary of all the apps and how to purchase a subscription.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is a graphics editor used for photo retouching, image manipulation, and graphic design. It offers tools to create, edit, and enhance raster-based images. There is even some basic vector art.

The name Photoshop is used as a verb to describe any photo manipulation, even when a different app has been used. Another sign of its preeminence is the number of articles you’ll find if you search for the “ best Photoshop alternatives .” It’s the industry standard for comparing other software.

So, let’s take a look at what Photoshop offers the user.

  • Photo Editing Magic: Photoshop empowers users to transform ordinary images. You can adjust brightness, contrast, and colors with precision as well as remove blemishes and enhance details.
  • Layers & Masks: A fundamental feature, layers allow you to stack and blend elements seamlessly. Masks enable you to fine-tune edits and create intricate compositions. And all without damaging your original image.
  • Selection Tools: Use precise selection tools to isolate specific areas for editing. This makes tasks like background removal a breeze.
  • Retouching Tools: Bid farewell to imperfections. Photoshop’s retouching arsenal includes the Healing Brush, Clone Stamp, and Content-aware Fill.
  • Text & Typography: Add text and graphics to your images effortlessly. Photoshop offers versatile typography tools and a wide range of fonts.
  • Filters & Effects: Explore a variety of filters and effects to give your photos unique styles. From vintage to futuristic, the possibilities are endless.
  • Creative Cloud Integration: Seamlessly sync your projects across devices through Creative Cloud. Work on your desktop, continue on your tablet, and refine on your smartphone.
  • Integrated AI: Photoshop has begun to see AI features added to its arsenal. This brings Generative Fill and text-prompt backgrounds to the already impressive suite of tools.

You can buy a subscription for Adobe Photoshop on its own or as part of the Photography Plan . Alternatively, you can buy it as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps subscription.

Adobe Photoshop Express is an iOS and Android app. It is free but has a $34.99 annual subscription for premium features.

Product

Adobe Premiere Pro is a fully featured video editing application. Along with DaVinci Resolve and Apple’s Final Cut Pro, it is probably the best-known video editor. It integrates nicely with other apps like Adobe After Effects, allowing you to produce videos of the highest quality.

This is a brief rundown of what Premiere Pro offers.

  • Video Editing Precision: Premiere Pro excels at video editing for manner of formats. This makes it ideal for YouTube videos, films, or marketing materials.

You can purchase Adobe Premiere Pro on its own, as well as being part of the Adobe Creative Cloud.

Adobe Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic

It can be a little confusing working out what’s what with Adobe Lightroom . That’s because Adobe has changed the name and features as the move to the Creative Cloud has become more popular. There are two main versions of Lightroom, and they are called Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC. But Adobe isn’t always careful about using these terms, and Lightroom is often used on its own.

The main difference is in where your photos are stored and how you access them. Lightroom Classic is a legacy app that expects you to store and work on your photos locally on your hard drive. For this, you need large and fast hard drives like these SSDs or NAS storage options.

Lightroom CC stores your photos in the cloud and doesn’t rely on your local storage. You can purchase either version on their own with the Photography Plan subscription or the Creative Cloud All apps.

There’s no confusion about what Lightroom is or does. It is a photo management and editing app that is the standard by which others are judged. And it is probably unmatched in terms of available presets for speeding up your editing.

So let’s look at what Lightroom offers you.

  • Effortless Photo Organization: Lightroom simplifies photo management with its intuitive catalog system. You can import, organize, and search for your images effortlessly.
  • Non-destructive Editing: Lightroom’s non-destructive editing preserves your original photos. You can make adjustments to exposure, color, and tone without altering your original files.
  • Precise Editing Tools: Fine-tune your photos with precision. You can adjust individual elements like exposure, contrast, and clarity. Utilizing these editing features helps your images look their best.
  • Powerful Batch Editing: Save time with batch editing. Apply the same edits to multiple photos simultaneously. This maintains consistency in your image collection.
  • Creative Presets: You have access to a vast library of presets designed by professional photographers. You can apply unique styles and moods to your photos with a single click.
  • RAW Editing: Lightroom allows you to exploit the full potential of your RAW files. It provides robust support for RAW image editing. This helps preserve maximum detail and quality.
  • Seamless Mobile Integration: Edit on the go with the Lightroom mobile app. Sync your edits across devices, so you can work wherever inspiration strikes.

Like all of Adobe’s Creative Cloud apps, you can try Adobe Lightroom for free to see if it is right for you.

Product

Adobe Illustrator has led the field of graphic design for a long time. It’s a hugely powerful application for illustration of all sorts. From designing your own fonts to linking your creations with other Creative Cloud apps, Illustrator is a popular solution.

  • 2D Animation: Adobe Animate is the go-to tool for creating 2D animations. These range from traditional frame-by-frame animations to interactive multimedia projects.
  • Vector Graphics: Animate’s vector-based approach allows for crisp, scalable graphics. Design characters, illustrations, and animations that look great on any screen.
  • Timeline and Layers: Animate offers a familiar timeline and layers panel. This makes it easy to organize and manipulate your animation frames and assets.
  • Rich Interactivity: Create interactive animations and games with Animate’s scripting capabilities. You can even add interactivity through code, enabling user engagement and dynamic content.
  • Export to Multiple Formats: Export your animations to a variety of formats, including HTML5 Canvas, WebGL, and more. This means that your work is compatible with web and mobile platforms.
  • Integration with Adobe Creative Cloud: Seamlessly integrate with other Adobe apps like Photoshop and Illustrator. Bring your design assets into Animate to create lively animations effortlessly.

You can use Adobe Animate on its own or as part of a Creative Cloud subscription.

Adobe After Effects

Product

Adobe After Effects is a fully featured special effects app for adding some real spice to your videos. It can be bought as a standalone app, but it makes perfect sense to use it in conjunction with Premiere Pro. And even more so if you incorporate the graphics you designed in Illustrator, for example.

Here’s a short summary of some of its features.

  • Motion Graphics Mastery: Adobe After Effects is the industry-standard tool for creating stunning effects. These include motion graphics, visual effects, and animations for film, television, and web content.
  • Keyframe Animation: Animate objects and properties with precision using keyframes. Create smooth transitions and dynamic motion sequences for captivating visuals.
  • VFX and Compositing: Incorporate visual effects into your videos with ease. After Effects offers advanced compositing tools for seamlessly integrating 2D and 3D elements.
  • Expression Scripting: Dive into advanced animation techniques with written expressions. Write custom scripts to automate animation and achieve complex motion patterns.
  • Particle Systems and Simulation: Generate realistic particle effects and simulate physics-driven animations. Bring explosions, fire, and weather effects to life with powerful plugins and built-in tools.
  • Integration with Adobe Apps: Seamlessly integrate your After Effects compositions with other Adobe Creative Cloud apps like Premiere Pro and Photoshop. Enhance your video projects with polished motion graphics.

You can take Adobe After Effects for a test drive with a free trial.

Adobe InCopy

Product

Working in a team on the same document can cause confusion and conflict. Adobe InCopy is designed to prevent this. It allows writers, editors, and designers to work on a document simultaneously without interrupting or destroying each other’s work.

Here’s an outline of what it does.

  • Efficient Editorial Collaboration: Adobe InCopy is a dedicated word processing tool. It is designed to streamline collaborative editorial workflows between writers and designers.
  • Editorial Control: Writers can focus on content creation, while designers maintain control over layout and design. InCopy ensures that the two aspects of publishing work harmoniously.
  • Real-time Collaboration: InCopy enables real-time collaboration on documents. Writers and designers can work simultaneously on the same document without conflicts.
  • Track Changes: InCopy offers robust tracking and revision features. Writers can suggest edits, and designers can easily review and accept changes, ensuring seamless collaboration.
  • Integration with InDesign: Seamlessly integrate InCopy with Adobe InDesign. Content created in InCopy can be placed directly into InDesign layouts, maintaining design consistency.
  • Content Versioning: Keep track of different versions of content. InCopy allows for content branching and version management, making it easy to revert to earlier drafts if needed.

It’s pretty cheap to purchase Adobe InCopy on its own. But of course, it also makes sense as part of a Creative Cloud subscription.

Conclusion: Adobe Creative Cloud

There’s no doubt that subscribing to Adobe’s software can take a sizeable chunk of money. And it’s never going to be a one-time investment. But it’s also the case that monthly subscriptions mean that class-leading software is available to you even if you don’t have much starting capital. And you know that the software will be updated in the future.

For many creatives, the All Apps subscription makes a lot of sense. You might pay it because you need three of the major apps. But then you find your kids want to do a podcast, and you have just the app for that. Or you want to make and send an amusing animation. You wouldn’t pay for the app just for that, but if you have it anyway, why not?

Other benefits include access to more than 20,000 Adobe fonts and fully licensed images, textures, and patterns. Once you belong, you get to play with a lot of fun stuff.

Adobe Creative Cloud is hardly the first name that springs to mind when you think of a cloud storage service. After all, Adobe has always been more famous for its suite of creative design software, be it Photoshop or Illustrator.

However, with a slew of quality-of-life changes that have made its cloud storage platform more intuitive and functional, this platform may well become your primary online storage service. In our Adobe Creative Cloud review, we take a look at the platform’s best features to determine if it’s the best cloud storage service for you.

Adobe Creative Cloud offers more than just a cloud storage platform. The creativity suite is valued highly within the creative industry, making this one of the more expensive solutions we have reviewed. Still, if you are someone who already uses or plans to use Adobe’s software, the cloud storage offering is added icing on the cake.

Adobe Creative Cloud costs $89.99 a month for individuals. You can reduce this cost to $59.99 a month by signing up for a one-year contract or to the equivalent of $54.99 a month if you pay yearly in advance. This is a plan that includes the entire suite of creativity applications from Adobe as well as 100GB of cloud storage. While that’s not a lot of storage for a primary storage platform, it is still more than sufficient for managing your creative workflow.

If you are a student enrolled in an eligible institution, you can get the entire suite for a discounted price of $19.99 a month .

Then, of course, there’s the business plan. It costs $89.99 per license per month and offers 1TB of cloud storage per user. You also gain access to an admin console and user analytics, both of which are accessible via the web interface.

Creative Cloud has seamless integration with Adobe apps Adobe's Creative Cloud Photography Plan, at $9.99 per month , is a basic option that comes with 20GB storage as standard (as well as access to Photoshop and Lightroom of course). You can upgrade to a 1TB plan instead for $19.99 per month , and there's also a seven-day free trial available, so you can test it out before you sign up.

Adobe Creative Cloud: Features

Creative Cloud's webpage discussing its features

Adobe Creative Cloud isn’t big on features when it comes to its cloud storage platform. The pitch here is rather focused on its suite of creativity apps, with the cloud storage serving as more of a unified platform to access, manage, and use these applications.

Adobe constantly synchronizes the latest versions of all files stored via its cloud storage platform to the device or devices of your choice, provided you have access to a stable internet connection. Changes are synchronized in real-time, allowing you to collaborate with other creative professionals as you make live changes to your projects.

Adobe Creative Cloud has some limitations on file sizes, but it's improved from the past. You can upload files up to 20GB in the Creative Cloud Files folder. You can store up to 350,000 files. What’s more, download and upload speeds are relatively slow compared to other cloud storage platforms, but they have improved over the past two years.

The drag-and-drop interface of the cloud storage platform is intuitive and easy to use. You also get access to a limited file versioning feature that allows you to restore previous versions of your creative work up to a few weeks prior. This is helpful should you find yourself wanting to undo some of your recent changes.

Adobe Creative Cloud: Interface and in use

Adobe Creative Cloud's cloud storage interface in use

Creative Cloud is a creativity suite first and a cloud storage platform second. The interface is fairly intuitive and easy to use, but more suited for real-time cloud collaboration rather than long-term file storage.

Creative Cloud has improved its file format support. It now supports DNG, HEIF, HEIC, PDF, TIF, JPG, GIF, SVG, PSD, BMP, PNG, and AI files. It’s worth keeping in mind that this is a platform meant primarily for managing your creative files, however, and users looking for a general-interest cloud storage provider should best look elsewhere.

Adobe Creative Cloud: Support

Adobe Creative Cloud's Learn & Support platform in use

Adobe offers phone and chat support options during normal business hours for both individual and business users. Learn & Support—Creative Cloud’s dedicated knowledge base and help center—is also filled with a range of how-to guides and tutorial videos to help beginners get started with the software.

Adobe Creative Cloud: Security

Adobe Creative Cloud's webpage discussing its security features

Adobe Creative Cloud’s storage platform is based on Amazon Web Services , making it an efficient as well as secure cloud storage service for storing important files. The provider has servers located in the EU, the US, and the Asia-Pacific region.

While all data is encrypted during transit, Adobe does not make clear whether data at rest is encrypted for Creative Cloud Personal. However, Creative Cloud for Teams and Enterprise does offer encryption both in transit and at rest.

Alternatives to Adobe Creative Cloud

IDrive's web interface in use

•  IDrive vs Carbonite

•  Google Drive vs OneDrive

•  IDrive vs Backblaze

•  Google Drive vs Dropbox

•  IDrive vs Dropbox vs pCloud

•  OneDrive vs Dropbox vs Google Drive

As a cloud storage provider, Adobe Creative Cloud doesn’t quite match the breadth of features offered by services like IDrive or Google Drive . This is because it’s not a dedicated cloud storage platform, but rather an extension of a cloud-based creativity suite.

IDrive, for example, offers plans that are a lot more affordable, along with 256-bit AES encryption for data in transit and at rest. You can also opt to use a private encryption key, which means not even IDrive can access your data. It also offers business plans for companies looking to utilize cloud storage.

Adobe Creative Cloud also comes with similar encryption measures for Team and Enterprise users, but the information is sparse on the quality of at-rest encryption offered in personal plans. It doesn’t offer nearly as much flexibility with its data plans, either. It also lacks additional features like bandwidth throttling and data verification.

Google Drive, on the other hand, offers productivity-based file editing capabilities that are second to none. The plans are also very affordable and offer a lot of control and flexibility over how much storage you want. If you are looking for a general cloud storage solution rather than a creativity suite, Google Drive is a much better option than Creative Cloud.

Adobe Creative Cloud: Final verdict

Adobe Creative Cloud is the best and perhaps only cloud-based creative solution in the market. However, it falls fairly short when judged simply as a cloud storage solution. This is because the cloud storage platform itself is meant to serve as an extension to the rich creativity suite, rather than as a permanent storage solution in its own right.

Adobe Creative Cloud pricing: How to get the best deal

Karen Haslam

Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, and Acrobat are well known apps used by creative professionals. There was once a time when all these apps, known collectively as Adobe Creative Suite, were purchased on disc and installed on Macs throughout the creative and publishing industries, but this eventually evolved into the subscription based Adobe Creative Cloud.

In this guide we will explain all the ways you can now buy Adobe’s apps. We’ll explain how much Adobe Creative Cloud costs, what the best way to purchase it is (monthly, annually, or another way), whether you can get it for free, and what happens if you cancel your subscription.

We’ll also include the best ways to save money, how you can use Adobe CC apps without committing to a subscription, and how you can buy the apps, such as Photoshop and Acrobat, separately.

Adobe Creative Cloud, usually $599.88 / £596.33  a year, $54.99/£51.98 a month:

What is Adobe Creative Cloud?

The first iteration of Adobe Creative Cloud arrived back in 2011, offering subscribers the option to pay an annual or monthly subscription for access to the most up-to-date version of the Creative Suite apps. At first, Adobe ran this option alongside Creative Suite, with CS6 launching in 2013, but Adobe eventually discontinued CS6 leaving creative pros with no other option than to subscribe to the software.

There are benefits to both Adobe and its customers with the subscription model: Adobe’s customers will always have the most recent version of Adobe’s software, and Adobe won’t find that most of its customers are still using five-year-old versions of its software with no motivation to update to a new version of the expensive software (as was no doubt the case in most offices and studios).

The problem with the subscription model is that pricing can be very complex, added to that is the fact that there are multiple apps to choose from – some of which may not be required by every customer. The Adobe Creative Cloud offering needs some clarification and in this article we will seek to do that.

If you are looking for the best Mac for designers , best Mac for photo editing , or the best Mac for video editing , be sure to read our guides. We also have a round-up of alternatives to Photoshop and free photo editors .

Adobe Creative Cloud pricing

There are various ways to buy Creative Cloud. You can subscribe to All Apps, Photography Plans with 20GB cloud space and another with 1TB cloud, a Lightroom Plan, as well as options for subscribing to single apps. These different packages will suit different types of users. For example, you may only need Photoshop, in which case you won’t want to pay for all the other apps too.

Once you have decided what software you want, the next choice is how you are going to pay for it. In most cases, Adobe offers three different ways to pay. Monthly on-contract, monthly off-contract, or in advance for the year.

The best deals are usually for an annual subscription paid monthly, but this does tie you into a contract and if you cancel you may have to pay 50% of the remaining contract. If you would prefer to be able to cancel at any time then the monthly deal where you pay a bit more, but if you no longer need the software you can cancel, may appeal. This could be a great way to get an app that you don’t need long-term.

Alternatively, you may be purchasing licenses for a design studio and therefore will be looking for the best deal for multiple seats. Ib that case you will be looking at the Business contracts, which are offered on a per-seat basis. There is also education pricing that should help if you are studying and specific pricing for education institutions.

When it comes to subscribing to single apps, such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, InDesign and so on, the pricing is usually as follows (note pricing increased a little for individual apps in 2023):

But the best deals are on the bundles, if you need two Adobe apps you might as well subscribe to All Apps as the price is:

We’ll look in more detail at each of the Adobe Creative Cloud purchase options below.

Can I get Adobe CC apps for free?

If you want the full version of Creative Cloud for free there is a free seven-day trial (here).

In addition to this, you can cancel your subscription within 14 days of your order and be refunded. So theoretically you could have a seven day trial, then sign up for Adobe CC, and after two weeks cancel. Which would effectively give you three weeks.

As we said above, if you don’t fancy committing to a year-long contract with Adobe then you can sign up for the more expensive monthly plan that allows you to cancel without having to pay your way out of the contract, this works out at $82.49/£78.98 a month.

If you do need Adobe’s apps on a long-term basis though, your best bet is to wait for Adobe to do a special offer – which it does from time to time. For example, on June 22, 2021, it was possible to save 40% on the All Apps Adobe CC subscription via Amazon . This was the cheapest Adobe Creative Cloud offer we had ever seen. Prime membership was required to get the deal. We’ve also seen Adobe take 20% off the price of Creative Cloud.

As an alternative to the free trial, you may be able to meet your requirements with Adobe’s free web-only app called Adobe Express (previously known as Adobe Spark). Adobe describes Express as a tool for social graphics and more, but this online web app also includes a number of useful photo-editing tools that are available for free through any web browser (we include it in our round-up of free photo editing apps ).

If it’s a free version of Photoshop you are after, there is a free version of Photoshop currently in beta, that the company started testing in Canada back in June 2022, but is now available elsewhere. This is a limited, web-only version of Photoshop and anyone can upload an image and edit it here (note it is only compatible with Chrome and Edge). You can easily remove a background and combine it with another image, for example. You will need to create an account before you can download your creations, you can use your Apple ID to do so.

How to get a student discount for Adobe CC

Students don’t get Adobe Creative Cloud for free, but they can get some good discounts – which are better at some times than others.

Adobe offers a student discount across its range of products all year round, but the best deals are usually in the back-to-school buying season, and Black Friday.

As of June 2023, students in the U.S. can save 60% on the price of Creative Cloud, while U.K.-based students can save 65%. There are also savings elsewhere including 65% in Europe, 70% off in Australia, and 60% off in Canada.

This means students (over the age of 13) can get all apps on an annual plan (billed upfront) for $239.88/£196.27 for the first year ($16.99/£16.24 a month). After the first year, you will be billed a slightly higher rate of $29.99/£24.96 a month, which is still a large discount on the usual $599.88/£596.33 (or $54.99/£51.99 a month).

If you are buying as a student, or as an education institution, the pricing is as follows. You can also see pricing during the Back to School (B2S) buying period (until mid/early September) and Black Friday (BF).

How to buy Adobe apps

We’ll run through each of the Adobe apps and explain how you can purchase them below.

If it’s just you looking to use one or all of the Adobe Creative Cloud apps there are individual plans, while if you are a business or education institution there are plans that are based on how many computers the software is installed on. There is also a discounted student plan. Read on for all the info.

How to buy all the Adobe CC apps

If you want to buy three or more Adobe Creative Cloud apps the All Apps bundle offered by Adobe is your best value option. Where individual apps cost you $19.99/£19.97 a month on the annual plan, the All Apps deal gives you every one of Adobe’s CC apps for £51.99/$54.99 a month.

But, if you only need the software temporarily, the best option for you might be to sign up for the more expensive of the two monthly plans since you can cancel at any time.

Adobe’s All Apps plan includes the following apps: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Adobe XD, Lightroom, Acrobat Pro, Animate, Dreamweaver, Premiere Pro, Premiere Rush, After Effects, Dimension, Audition, InCopy, Lightroom Classic, Media Encoder, Character Animator, Prelude, Fuse, Bridge, plus 100GB of cloud storage, Adobe Portfolio, Adobe Fonts, and Adobe Spark.

If you are buying for a business the pricing is different:

How to buy Photoshop

Photoshop

Photoshop is arguably Adobe’s most famous app, or at least one of them. Indeed, the phrase to have “Photoshopped” something is a frequently used verb in this modern age of faked photos.

Adobe’s Photoshop software is primarily used for editing photos, allowing users to adapt color and light, apply effects, remove objects, and refine the image.

If you want to buy the Adobe Photoshop permanently or temporarily there are a number of options. Two include Lightroom, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, on desktop and iPad, and either 20GB or 1TB cloud storage. You can also buy Photoshop alone (which adds a monthly, cancel at any time, subscription option. Alternatively try out the free, web-based version of Photoshop .

How to buy Lightroom

Lightroom CC

If you are a photographer then the Lightroom app may be of interest. Lightroom offers some image editing features and presets you can use to add filters to your photos, but it also offers organization tools to help you store and locate your images.

Lightroom is available as part of the two Photography Plans detailed above, but if all you need is Lightroom then you can purchase the Lightroom Plan. There used to be a monthly plan where you could cancel at any time (for $79.49/£75.85) but it appears that Adobe no longer offers this option.

The best Adobe Lightroom deals will appear below (remember that Lightroom is also included in the Photography plan):

How to buy Acrobat Pro

Acrobat is another Adobe app that’s pretty well known. There are actually three Acrobat apps though, which can be a cause of confusion with people wondering whether they need to pay for Actobat, and even if they need to buy Adobe Creative Cloud to get Acrobat.

While we say there are three apps, that’s not true for us Mac users. Adobe offers the free Acrobat Reader, Adobe Acrobat Standard and Adobe Acrobat Pro.

If you are just looking for an app to allow you to read and fill in PDFs, then the free Adobe Reader should be enough. If you need to create PDFs you could just create a document on your Mac and choose Print > PDF and edit in Preview. But we’ll assume that you need to create a PDF with a little more finesse.

Acrobat Standard wasn’t previously available for Mac, but that isn’t the case anymore. You can get Acrobat Standard on Adobe’s website for $12.99 / £13.14 a month, you won’t find that version on the Creative Cloud shopfront. Acrobat Standard lacks some of the features of Acrobat Pro but both make it possible to create and edit a PDF.

You need Acrobat Pro if you want to do things like convert scanned documents into searchable and editable PDFs, or add audio, video, and interactive objects. Acrobat Pro also works on iPad and iPhone.

If you need Acrobat Pro, here’s how the pricing is structured (it’s increased since we last edited this, probably because Acrobat Standard is now available).

If it doesn’t have to be Adobe there are plenty of alternative PDF apps available. Read Best free PDF editors for Mac . Also read How to edit a PDF on Mac .

How much do Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects cost?

Premiere Pro

Most of the other apps Adobe groups together under the Creative Cloud umbrella are available separately for a fixed price.

In addition to those we’ve mentioned above, you can get each of the following apps on either a monthly or an annual plan:

  • Illustrator
  • Premiere Pro
  • After Effects
  • Dreamweaver

Prices start at £19.97 / $20.99 for the monthly plan if you sign up for the whole year.

Also read: How to get InDesign on a Mac .

As we said above, if you don’t want to sign up for a one-year contract, the best option is to choose the monthly plan that you can cancel at any time. Alternatively, if a week is all you need then the seven-day trial might be an option, details here .

Adobe also offers a few apps at a lower price, these include InCopy and Premiere Rush.

If you hoping to get Premiere Pro for free you can’t, but Premiere Rush might be able to do what you need – it offers basic features and functions. Alternatively, have a look at our round-up of free and cheap Mac video editors .

There are also various Substance 3D options, that combine 3D and AR apps 3D Painter, Designer, Stager and Sampler in a bundle.

Plus you can get Adobe’s user experience design tool Adobe XD for £9.98 / $9.99 a month, and Adobe Spark for creating social graphics, videos and webpages for £10.10 / $9.99 a month. Buy them here .

Finally, you can also sign up for Adobe Stock, which is Adobe’s royalty-free image, graphics, 3D assets and video library.

Once you have subscribed you can install the software on two computers. So, if you have Photoshop in the office you are able to also have it on your computer at home.

What you can’t do is run the software on both computers at the same time – but you can, at least, still be signed in on your work computer.

In fact, you can install the software on more than two computers, but it will only work on the third computer if you aren’t signed in on one of the others.

If you are unable to sign out of one of these computers you can go to the account management page and sign out there.

Where can I download the Adobe CC software?

Once you are subscribed to Adobe CC – or the individual apps, you will be able to download them from Adobe’s website here.

How to cancel Adobe Creative Cloud subscription

There is a 14-day period after purchasing your Creative Cloud subscription when you can cancel and be refunded.

As we explained above, if you are likely to want to cancel your subscription within a year then you would be wise to choose the monthly payment plan that doesn’t mean you will be locked into a contract for a year. The price is more, but you won’t have to pay Adobe anything to break the contract.

If you choose a monthly plan that is based on an annual contract then you may have to pay 50% of what you still have left to pay Adobe on cancellation of the contract. So, if you were to cancel after four months you would potentially have to pay half of what you would owe for the next eight months.

To cancel contact Adobe Customer Support here.

Adobe's full Creative Cloud suite is 40 percent off in a rare deal

New subscribers can get access to 25 adobe apps for a record-low price for the first year..

Designers, photographers and other creators may want to check out this deal from Adobe. From now through May 13, first-time subscribers can save 40 percent on the monthly cost of the Creative Cloud All Apps plan for a full year. That brings the price down from a hefty $60 per month to a slightly more palatable $36. To get the deal, you'll need to agree to a 12-month subscription commitment. After the year is up, the plan will automatically renew at the regular price, unless you cancel. If you want to pay for the whole year at once, it'll run you $396, which is also 40 percent of the standard $660.

Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps

You can save 40 percent on a subscription to Adobe's Creative Cloud All Apps with a 12-month commitment.

Creative Cloud All Apps includes online access to Adobe stalwarts like Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Illustrator, and InDesign, plus about 20 additional apps — including Firefly , the text-to-image generative AI tool and the social-content-focused Adobe Express. The plan also comes with 100GB of cloud storage, tutorials, Adobe Fonts and 1,000 credits per month to use towards generative AI creation in Firefly and others.

Adobe doesn't often run discounts on their service, so this is a rare opportunity to catch a break on the tools that, for some creative pursuits, are tough to replace. The $36 monthly price tag is likely the closest most of us will get to the enviable student and teacher pricing of $20 per month.

I wasn't a fan of the old model, i.e paying £600 just for Photoshop on it's own with no major updates ever. If you wanted updates/version upgrade you had to buy the upgrade license for not much of discount from the full RRP. At least subscriptions make the products available to all. And lets face it, your work should be covering the costs of the tools to do your job anyway....
