Brand protection can be achieved through cleanliness. In environmental cleanliness, buildings and the surrounding environment are cleaned and organized. As a marketing strategy, cleanliness is an advantage for the brand because it will portray the brand as organized and conducive for human interaction. In this competitive world, cleanliness is a priority consideration for brands. In the food industry, cleanliness is what people look at before they can engage because health well-being is important for individuals.

Cleanliness also enables the extension of a lifespan of an object. With tools and instruments, cleanliness is emphasized because dirt causes reduction of the lifespan like in metallic objects, rust causes destruction of the tools and instruments. In buildings, cleanliness also preserves the integrity and enables longer durability.

Cleanliness is a moral virtue that is admired. When a person is clean, social relations and interactions become easier because society views dirty people as a nuisance and they are inapproachable. Cleanliness is attractive and admirable in the society.

In conclusion, cleanliness in the lives of individuals is unavoidable. Everything surrounding the life of an individual is viable for cleanliness in order to maintain functionality and development. Spiritual cleanliness is mostly focused on purity of self before God and humanity in all religions although the methods of purification are different for each religion. Physical cleanliness is beneficial with regard to human interaction and with the environment in terms of health, safety and lifespan.

8 Ways to Keep the Earth Clean

Litter on beach. Image credit: NOAA.

By: Amanda Laverty, Knauss fellow with NOAA’s Marine Debris Program

April 18, 2017 — Here at the NOAA Marine Debris Program, Earth Day is every day and we are always encouraging others to get involved and support efforts working toward a clean environment and healthy planet.

Our oceans are filled with items that do not belong there. Huge amounts of consumer plastics, metals, rubber, paper, textiles, derelict fishing gear, vessels, and other lost or discarded items enter the marine environment every day, making marine debris one of the most widespread pollution problems facing the world's ocean and waterways. The ultimate solution to the problem lies with every single one of us—preventing marine debris in the first place.

First, consider how you might personally contribute to marine debris and follow the “4Rs” whenever possible. Refuse unnecessary single-use items, like plastic straws or cutlery when possible. Reduce the amount of waste you produce by choosing products with less packaging. Reuse items when you can and choose reusable items over disposable ones. And, Recycle as much as possible — bottles, cell phones, ink cartridges, and many other items can be recycled.

Next, spread the word to others! Tell your family, friends, community, and more about this important issue and what they can do to help.

Here are a few easy and effective ways you can choose to reduce your daily impact and make a world of difference:

  • Bring a bag. Remember to bring reusable bags to the grocery store or for any other shopping activities to reduce consumption of disposable bags.
  • Invest in a reusable water bottle. Acquiring a reusable water bottle would not only greatly reduce the amount of single-use plastic you use, but it would also save you money in the long run! If you’re concerned about the quality of your tap water, consider using a water filter.
  • Bring your own reusable cup. Think about how many disposable cups are used every day in just your local coffee shop. Bringing a mug for your morning coffee can reduce the amount of waste you produce annually. Imagine how much waste we could reduce if we all made this simple daily change!
  • Refuse single-use items. Take note on how often you rely on single-use items and choose to replace them with more sustainable versions. Refusing plastic straws and disposable cutlery when you go out and bringing your own containers for leftovers are a few ways you can start today.
  • Avoid products with microbeads. Facial scrubs and beauty products containing plastic microbeads were banned in the United States in 2015, but won’t be fully phased out until 2019. Read the labels when purchasing products and opt for ones that contain natural scrubbing ingredients like salt or sugar.
  • Shop in bulk. Consider the product-to-packaging ratio when purchasing items and choose larger containers instead of multiple smaller ones. When you have the option, also consider purchasing package-free foods and household goods.
  • Make sure your waste goes to the right place. Do your best to ensure that the waste you dispose of ends up where it should. Recycle the materials that are recyclable in your area and make sure to reduce the likelihood of your garbage ending up in the environment by keeping a lid on your trash can when it’s outside.
  • Compost. Composting at home reduces the volume of garbage sent to landfills and reduces the chance of some products becoming marine debris.

These are just a few ways that we can incorporate taking care of our ocean and Great lakes into our everyday lives. By doing our part to work toward a sustainable and debris-free planet, we’ll also be providing others with inspiration and a good example to follow. As individuals we have the potential to make a big difference and together we can change the world.

Short Essay on Importance of Clean Environment

Clean environment has been a question of importance and has grabbed a lot of attention lately. People are now gaining insight and becoming aware about the importance of a clean environment as it is important for the healthy life and a safe future. Maintaining the cleanliness is not the responsibility of one person alone but it is a collective responsibility. It is good for our health therefore it is of great importance to keep our surroundings clean.

People throw litter here and there. On the roads, in the society compounds, we see litter. So we must inculcate the habit of using dustbins and clean the litter as much as we can. Cleanliness should be initiated in all the offices, schools, societies and colleges. In fact many cleanliness projects and campaigns such as “Save Narmada Agitation”, “Swachch Bharat Abhiyan”, and “Go Green” have been undertaken by the Government.

The reason these campaigns had to start were the amount of pollution which was increasing day by day due to the excessive use of technology and science. Therefore, more and more industrialization and urbanization has been accountable for our environment. Keeping the environment clean is something which can’t be ignored. The health of humans and flora and fauna depends on the cleanliness of the environment. Dirty environment serves as an abode for lots of diseases. Cleanliness portrays your image like a mirror so if you like to keep your surroundings clean, it depicts your image and vice versa.

As humans we must take steps as little as they may be to help our environment, we must plant trees and we must be eco-friendly and also encourage others as well. Use stairs instead of elevators, use bicycles instead of cars, save water and plant more trees and recycle plastic material are a few measures that we must take.  By implementing these ideas, we can reduce the ill effects of pollution and begin living a peaceful life.

In the words of George Bernard Shaw “Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world”. So ask yourself how you wish to see this world for yourself and the future generation.

Essay on Cleanliness

Introduction.

Cleanliness refers to the art of keeping our body, mind, house, work area and our surroundings clean. We can divide cleanliness into various types such as cleaning clothes, cleaning streets, clean surroundings, clean homes and personal cleanliness. We should make cleanliness our habit because cleaning of our body is important for good physical and mental health. Cleanliness of our surroundings and environment is essential for social and intellectual health. We should never compromise with cleanliness. Parents and teachers must encourage children to adopt the habit of cleanliness and make this a part of our lives.

Cleanliness is not other’s responsibility. It is our own responsibility. It is very important to have a healthy living so basic cleanliness is significant in life. It is as essential as we need food, water and clothes to live. Absence of cleanliness leads to various types of diseases, illness and breeding places for flies, mosquitoes and cockroaches.

Basic cleanliness starts from our own personal cleanliness and hygiene. To start with, we must wash hands regularly. Washing hands keeps germs and bacteria away. So, it is very important to wash hands before eating a meal. When we come back home from outside, the first thing we should do is wash hands to clean all dirt and germs. Every day we should take a bath and wear clean clothes. Clothes should be washed daily. After using the toilet, we must always wash hands with soap. We must cut or trim nails regularly. Cutting nails is essential for personal hygiene. If we don’t cut or trim nails regularly, then there is a high possibility for the dirt and germs to enter our body. In addition, brushing and flossing twice daily are also important for oral hygiene.

We must keep our homes clean all time. We should ensure that dusting, sweeping and mopping are done daily. Instead of littering our house with papers and wrappers, we must inculcate the habit of throwing them in wastebaskets. We should clean our bathrooms daily.  Our kitchen, where food is being cooked and stored should be cleaned and hygiene must be maintained. We must cover food all times so that flies and other insects don’t get into them. Utensils should be covered while cooking. After cooking and eating, dishes, spoons, glasses and other vessels should be thoroughly cleaned with hot water and soap. We should wash raw vegetables and fruits before consuming. We must eat fresh and hygienic food and avoid eating outside. If we leave food items out for a long time then there could be a growth of bacteria and viruses so refrigeration or other ways of storing food items is important. The source of drinking water should be proper. Drinking water should be either boiled or filtered through modern UV technology. Pest control and sanitization should be done periodically at homes to keep away cockroaches and flies.

We must realize that keeping our surroundings and environment clean is as important as keeping our homes clean. It is the responsibility of every individual to keep the public places clean. One important way to keep the public places clean is to stop littering roads and streets. People should be educated not to spit and urinate in public. Proper toilets should be built in public places to avoid this. Proper sanitization of the drain pipes should be done. Everyone is responsible for the country’s environment. Cleaning the environment plays an important role in the development of a country. Cleaning our surroundings encourages people to do better work because it helps to reduce stress and focus well on work. It also provides employment to many people and thus reduces poverty.

Our Prime Minister, Sri. Narendra Modi has launched the campaign of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ to promote cleanliness of our environment. We should support this initiative started by our government for a better and clean country. There is a proverb saying, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness” which explains maintaining clean surrounding results in a fresh mind and body, which leads to a successful life. Cleanliness helps in bringing spirituality and concentration. Cleanliness is the responsibility of every citizen for a peaceful and healthy living.

Title: Environmental Conservation – Protecting Our Planet for Future Generations

Introduction :

The environment is the foundation of life on Earth, encompassing the air, water, land, and ecosystems that support all living beings. It provides us with vital resources, regulates the climate, and sustains biodiversity. This essay explores the significance of environmental conservation, the threats it faces, and the urgent need for collective action to protect our planet.

Importance of Environmental Conservation

The environment is vital for our well-being and the sustainability of the planet. It provides us with clean air to breathe, safe water to drink, and nutritious food to eat. Ecosystems support biodiversity and provide habitats for countless species, contributing to the overall health of our planet. The environment also plays a crucial role in regulating the climate, preserving natural cycles, and mitigating the impacts of natural disasters.

Environmental Threats

Human activities have led to various environmental threats that endanger ecosystems and biodiversity. Deforestation for agriculture, logging, and urbanization destroys habitats and contributes to climate change. Pollution from industrial activities, transportation, and improper waste disposal contaminates air, water, and soil. Climate change, primarily caused by the excessive release of greenhouse gases, results in rising temperatures, melting ice caps, and extreme weather events. These threats have far-reaching consequences for both the environment and human societies.

Conservation Strategies

To protect the environment, proactive conservation strategies are necessary. Sustainable practices, such as reducing waste, conserving resources, and promoting renewable energy sources, are key to mitigating environmental impacts. Reforestation and afforestation efforts are crucial for restoring habitats and combating climate change. Conservation initiatives, including protected areas, wildlife sanctuaries, and marine reserves, help preserve biodiversity and ensure the long-term sustainability of ecosystems.

Individual and Collective Responsibility

Environmental conservation is a shared responsibility that requires both individual and collective action. Individuals can contribute by adopting sustainable lifestyles, reducing their carbon footprint, and supporting eco-friendly initiatives. Governments play a vital role in implementing policies and regulations that promote environmental protection, investing in renewable energy infrastructure, and fostering sustainable practices in industries. Protecting natural areas enhances opportunities for eco-tourism, generating economic benefits for local communities. Conservation also fosters a sense of connection to nature and promotes physical and mental well-being.

Environmental conservation is crucial for the well-being of both humans and the planet. It is our responsibility to protect the environment, mitigating threats such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change. Cleaning Up the Environment: Business and Public Responsibilities Essay

Big businesses and the public in general are dependent on the natural environment in satisfying the need for both renewable and non-renewable natural resources. This necessity is addressed by extracting necessary resources and using them for manufacturing all necessary tools and machines as well as feeding society. However, there is a challenge of cleaning up the environment and keeping it clean, as the operation of big businesses and life of the public is inseparable from deteriorating the nature. Therefore, it is critical to determine the scope of responsibilities of both businesses and society as a whole in preserving the natural environment and seek ways to turn cleaning it up into a positive experience for both.

To begin with, it is essential to point to the fact that there is a constant conflict between society and big businesses as well as both of them and the natural environment. As mentioned above, both big businesses and public in general depend upon the environment in satisfying the need for natural resources. They can be divided into renewable resources such as timber and fish and non-renewable ones such as metals and oil (Diamond, 2011). Still, regardless of the nature of resources, they are extracted by both societies and big businesses. However, there is a lasting conflict between the two, as what is economically beneficial for big businesses, is harmful to the public in general. On a larger scale, what benefits both public and businesses, in most cases, deteriorates the natural environment (Diamond, 2011). This problem is connected to the fact that both businesses and society fail to recognize that they are responsible for preserving the natural environment and keeping it clean.

Regardless of the shared responsibility to preserve the natural environment and keep it clean, the scope of duties of big businesses and the public is different. This difference derives from the difference in the volume of extracted and consumed natural resources and their influence on the environment. That said, big businesses are responsible for avoiding breaches of fiduciary responsibility. It means that initially, the public should be aware that big businesses are profit-making machines, i.e. they focus on maximizing profits regardless of their influence on the natural environment (Diamond, 2011). Moreover, they are responsible for avoiding expensive natural disasters. In this way, senior management of big businesses is interested in minimizing costs and guaranteeing safety of their employees, as well as satisfying interests of their major stakeholders, instead of protecting the environment. Nevertheless, it means that big companies make significant effort to avoid the most critical deteriorations of the environment.

Except for the responsibility to avoid industry-induced natural disasters and liability to follow national legislation, big businesses have other resources to foster cleaning up the environment. In this case, it is essential to note that some of the most influential companies are not involved in extracting natural resources. Instead, they cooperate with other companies, which supply them with necessary provisions. From this perspective, non-extracting manufacturers have enough power to force suppliers to clean up the environment and introduce environmentally friendly technologies. Because other companies are as well profit-focused, they are more likely to react to the pressure induced by their customers instead of that from the government. In this way, big businesses are responsible for creating the platform for preserving the natural environment and guaranteeing that it is clean as well as offered products are safe.

On the other hand, the scope of public’s responsibility might be even broader than that of big businesses. It can be explained by the fact that the public as a whole can be viewed from two perspectives – the government and people. In case of viewing the public as the government, its responsibility for cleaning up the environment and keeping it clean is ultimate, as it is the government that determines the rules of the economic game. In this way, if the government does not point to responsibility for deteriorating the environment in legal acts, blaming big businesses for not cleaning it up the environment is meaningless, as they do not violate any regulations. At the same time, if companies are legally liable of keeping the environment clean and know that violating these provisions would lead to economic losses, they would invest in environmentally friendly technologies, i.e. those, which help to minimize negative influence on the environment, decrease emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere as well as reduce the amount of natural resources for manufacturing (Gabriel, 2012).

At the same time, it is critical to point to individual and corporate responsibility in treating big businesses. From this perspective, both people and small businesses choose a manufacturer of products they buy. It means that if they are aware that a big business violated environmental regulation but still choose its products, they support the violator and provide it with further opportunities for deteriorating the environment. On the other hand, if small companies, as well as individual consumers, ignore products manufactured by non-sustainable firms, they would force these companies to review their environmental policies and mitigate their negative influence on nature (Diamond, 2011). However, in some cases, only companies have enough power to influence other big businesses, e.g. those involved in transportation, packaging, etc. Nevertheless, consumers have the potential of controlling those firms, which specialize in commodities and food products.

Moreover, individual consumers and small companies have the power of influencing the government and making it review regulations, thus requiring implementation of positive environmental practices as well as keeping environmental track record of big businesses (Diamond, 2011). In this way, in case of failing to affect environmental policies of big businesses by giving preference to eco-friendly products, it is the responsibility of citizens and small companies to press their governments, thus enforcing green laws and the introduction of corresponding control measures aimed at guaranteeing that new rules and regulations are strictly followed by big companies.

Bearing in mind what has been mentioned above, it is evident that keeping the environment clean is a matter of continuous conflicts. Nevertheless, there are some ways to make the problem easier to address and a positive experience for both the public in general and big businesses. However, it requires the creation of a universal and comprehensive approach to the identification of this challenge and institutional framework for promoting the significance of solving the issue (Hawrysz & Foltys, 2015). In order to make this initiative productive, it is essential to guarantee that it centers on several arguments. First and foremost, it is critical to find the balance between the environment and economy. In this view, keeping the environment clean can be viewed as economically beneficial in both short and long runs, as avoiding waste is always better than investing in eliminating it. It means that even though the implementation of eco-friendly technologies requires vast investment, this step induces a positive environmental change, which would benefit both the public and big businesses (Diamond, 2011).

Moreover, it is imperative to realize that regardless of the potential benefits of environmentally friendly technologies, introducing them is always more expensive that developing a comprehensive social and corporate policies, which aim at minimizing negative influence on the environment. The same is true about cleaning up the environment compared to keeping it clean. From this perspective, it is environmentally better and economically beneficial to prevent oil spills that deal with its consequences (Diamond, 2011). More than that, it is imperative to realize that forecasting effects of the newest technologies is complicated. At this time, it is evident that their influence on the environment is less detrimental than that of traditional technologies, which omit vast volumes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere during the process of combustion. However, eventually it might turn out that their influence is as well negative (Diamond, 2011).

In conclusion, it is essential to state that keeping the environment clean is the individual responsibility. It is true about both members of society and companies. In this way, big businesses can be viewed as individuals as well because they determine the rules of play and choose whether they want to follow governmental policies or not. Therefore, recognizing individual responsibility in keeping the environment clean should become the foundation of the initiative for turning it into a positive experience for both the public in general and big businesses.

Trashed With Jeremy Irons: Documentary Analysis

The documentary ‘Trashed, with Jeremy Irons’ focuses on how the waste management industry is having deleterious consequences on human and animal life on this planet. By using case studies from around the world, Jeremy Irons takes the viewer on a narrated journey from Lebanon, to the UK, to Vietnam, and to the North Pacific, all with the objective of demonstrating how the ways in which humans get rid of waste: through landfills, incinerators, and oceanic dumping, are harming human health, destroying people’s livelihoods, and adversely affecting animals’ welfare. Irons concludes this dismal narration of the anthropogenic harms of the waste industry with an uplifting look at the positive changes that grassroots organizations are effectuating in the disposal of waste. Ultimately, this film is incredibly successful in getting its point across in its 93 minutes running time; that humans must change the way in which we deal with waste. This success can be attributed to how skillfully Jeremy Irons exploits

Pollution Essay: The Effects Of Climate Change Toward The Environment

One of the greatest issues that we face towards the environment has been an increasingly difficult problem over the last few years. Earths climate is changing at rapid paces and solutions are needed as quickly as possible to replenish natural ecosystems and cultures that depend on the environment. Climate change not only affects the animals in our ecosystem, but us humans as well. With the human population increasing every year, climate change is only getting worse. Many argue that the effects of climate change towards the environment are due to other extraneous factors, however, I myself am a strong believer that the problems such as rising sea levels, warmer temperatures and natural disasters are all due to both natural causes and human activity.

Literature Review On Solid Waste Management

Industrial and capital hubs in developing countries are similarly characterized by multiple urban sprawls, informal settlements and overcrowding. The local governments or municipalities in many developing countries are highly challenged by mainly poor or weak policy and legislative provisions to regulate and enforce waste management guidelines. They also lack adequate funding and the correct capacity in terms of waste management personnel. All these challenges lead to situations where these local authorities are failing to take effective decisions with regards to solid waste management. It is worth noting that the decisions which municipalities are facing in terms of managing solid waste are not only difficult and capital intensive but they impact greatly on the natural environment as well as on social lives of people, therefore solutions to this issue are a matter of

Reflective Essay About The Environment

As the result of my experience this semester I can conclude that this experience was a life changing experience. The way I viewed things in the past about the environment has changed. In the past I was not aware of the importance of living a more sustainable life. Also, how protecting our environment is one of the today’s most serious issues. Some of issues and information that I learned throughout this semester was the web life, food web, overpopulation, mutualism & commensalism, climate change, pollution, rainforest & sea destruction, and the extinction of many animals and plants.

Essay On Environmental Issues

Environmental issues began to be discussed and debated only towards the end of the 20th century. Since then significant amount of literature has been penned down raising awareness about issues of pollution, deforestation, animal rights and several others however it has failed to result in major changes, ideas or even actions to save the environment. Several species of animals have become extinct; pollution level is at an all-time high, global warming is leading to severe climate changes all across the globe but these problems do not seem to alarm the decision makers. Environment cleanliness means keeping our surroundings and nature free from pollution and waste. It is about taking care of our Earth, which is our home. When we keep our environment clean, we help plants, animals, and people stay healthy.

Why is it Important?

A clean environment is important because dirty surroundings can make us sick. For example, when water is polluted, the fish that live in it can die, and we can’t drink it. Clean air is also necessary because breathing in dirty air can cause diseases like asthma. So, keeping our environment clean helps everyone live better.

How to Keep the Environment Clean

We can do many simple things to keep our environment clean. Throwing garbage in bins, recycling things like paper and plastic, and using less water are good starts. Also, walking or riding a bike instead of using cars can reduce air pollution.

Everyone’s Role

Cleaning the environment is not just for adults; kids can help too. By learning about the importance of a clean environment at school and at home, children can practice good habits. They can also tell their friends and family about how to keep the environment clean.

In conclusion, environment cleanliness is about keeping our surroundings free from pollution. It is vital for our health and the health of the planet. 500 Words Essay on Environment Cleanliness

Environment cleanliness means keeping our surroundings and the natural world free from trash, pollution, and other harmful substances. It is similar to how we keep our homes clean, but on a much bigger scale. When we talk about the environment, we mean our cities, towns, rivers, oceans, and even the air we breathe. Keeping all these places clean is important for the health of people, animals, and plants.

Why Keeping the Environment Clean is Important

A clean environment is key to a healthy life. If our surroundings are dirty, it can make us sick. For example, if water is polluted, the fish that live in it can die, and people who drink it can get ill. Clean air is also important because dirty air can cause breathing problems. When we take care of the environment, we help everyone live better and healthier lives.

Ways to Keep Our Environment Clean

There are many simple things we can do to help keep the environment clean. First, we can reduce the amount of waste we create. This means using less plastic and recycling things like paper, glass, and cans. Second, we can pick up litter when we see it on the ground and throw it away properly. This helps keep our parks and streets looking nice and safe for animals. Third, we can plant trees and flowers, which make the air cleaner and the land prettier.

The Role of Schools and Children

Schools can teach children about the importance of a clean environment. They can organize cleanup days where students help pick up trash around the school or in the community. Children can also learn how to recycle and why it’s important to use less plastic. When children know about these things, they can help their families and friends do the same.

Government and Laws

The government also plays a big role in keeping the environment clean. They can make laws that limit pollution and protect nature. For example, there can be rules about how factories should treat the waste they create so it doesn’t harm the environment. The government can also create parks and other protected areas where people can enjoy nature without hurting it.

Our Responsibility

In the end, keeping the environment clean is a job for everyone. It’s not just for the government or schools, but for each person. By doing our part, like throwing away trash correctly, using less plastic, and recycling, we can all help make the world a cleaner and better place. Remember, even small actions can make a big difference when we all work together.

Environment cleanliness is very important for our health and the health of the planet. By understanding why it’s important and how we can help, we can make sure our world stays beautiful and safe for all living things. Let’s promise to keep our environment clean so we can all enjoy a bright and healthy future.

Millions of people around the world will pause on Monday, at least for a moment, to mark Earth Day. It’s an annual event founded by people who hoped to stir activism to clean up and preserve a planet that is now home to some 8 billion humans and assorted trillions of other organisms.

Here are answers to some common questions about Earth Day and how it came to be:

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE EARTH DAY?

Earth Day has its roots in growing concern over pollution in the 1960s, when author Rachel Carson’s 1962 book “Silent Spring,” about the pesticide DDT and its damaging effects on the food chain, hit bestseller lists and raised awareness about nature’s delicate balance.

But it was a senator from Wisconsin, Democrat Gaylord Nelson, who had the idea that would become Earth Day. Nelson had long been concerned about the environment when a massive offshore oil spill sent millions of gallons onto the southern California coast in 1969. Nelson, after touring the spill site, had the idea of doing a national “teach-in” on the environment, similar to teach-ins being held on some college campuses at the time to oppose the war in Vietnam.

Nelson and others, including activist Denis Hayes, worked to expand the idea beyond college campuses, with events all around the country, and came up with the Earth Day name.

WHY WAS APRIL 22 CHOSEN FOR EARTH DAY?

A history of the movement by EarthDay.org, where Hayes remains board chair emeritus, says the date of the first Earth Day — April 22, 1970 — was chosen because it fell on a weekday between spring break and final exams and the aim was to attract as many students as possible.

IS EARTH DAY A REAL HOLIDAY?

It’s not a federal holiday. But many groups use the day to put together volunteer events with the environment in mind, such as cleanups of natural areas. You can see a list of events worldwide , or register your own event, at EarthDay.org.

FILE - Activists display prints replicating solar panels during a rally to mark Earth Day at Lafayette Square, Washington, April 23, 2022. (AP Photo/Gemunu Amarasinghe, File)

HAS IT HAD AN IMPACT?

It has. The overwhelming public response to the first Earth Day is credited with adding pressure for the U.S. Congress to do more to address pollution, and it did, passing landmark legislation including the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. More broadly, it’s seen as the birth of the modern environmental movement. In later years, Earth Day expanded to become a truly global event. It now claims to have motivated action in more than 192 countries.

In 2000, Earth Day began taking aim at climate change, a problem that has grown rapidly more urgent in recent years.

WHAT’S THE THEME THIS YEAR?

This year’s Earth Day is focusing on the threat that plastics pose to our environment, with a call to end all single-use plastic and find replacements for their use so they can quickly be phased down.

Clean like you mean it: the ultimate guide to spring cleaning your home

Blitz your wardrobe! Scrub that keyboard! Shine your teaspoons! It’s time for a brutal spring clean – so roll up your sleeves and follow our 43 expert tips from cleaning and decluttering gurus

Open your eyes

If you’re unsure where to start with decluttering: “Walk around your house as if you’ve never been there, or are looking to buy,” advises Jenn Jordan , a Yorkshire-based Marie Kondo who organises homes in Leeds and London. “Your house will tell you what it needs. Or you can start by gamifying the task – try getting rid of 10 items in 10 minutes.”

Space is as important as stuff

“Clutter is magnified by small spaces,” says Caroline Solomon , a New York- based lifestyle expert whose TikTok @neat.caroline has more than 276,000 followers. “It’s tough medicine, but let your space define how much stuff you own. If you live in a one-bedroom flat, don’t cram it as full as you can.”

Clean start

Empty the wardrobe completely, says Dilly Carter , presenter and professional organiser. Make piles on the bed of like with like: shirts, dresses, blazers, etc. Go through each pile and reduce. Ask yourself: do I need 20 pairs of jeans and 15 skirts? (Spoiler, no!) Does it fit? Do I love it? Do I have space for it? Take out winter clothes, bulky coats and knits and vacuum pack them – store them under the bed or in the loft. Put what’s left back in, hang left to right, heaviest to lightest and keep things in garment groups.

Donate old clothes

Many charities, including Oxfam , BHF and Save the Children , offer a free downloadable postage label or will send you a bag for donations via their websites. Consider sending work-appropriate clothing to Smart Works , a UK charity that gives unemployed women confidence to reach their full potential and secure job interviews. Your local council will have a list of clothing donation points where items are sorted for donation and recycling. For Londoners, Traid will collect larger quantities of clothing from your home. Book a collection via the website. Collection4Clothes offers nationwide collections for donations.

Dispatch stray socks

Purge your house of every stray or abandoned sock. Once rounded up, do not look for their pair. Put all the strays in a bag, ready to go to your nearest textile recycling spot. Then, joy of joys, get yourself a sock organiser for your drawer. A Place for Everything does them in grey linen, each sock tray has 16 compartments. Pair, roll up, pop in. Get to it and put your best foot forward.

Marshal your handbags and shoes

To achieve a fully functional space that utilises every inch available, says Erica Davies , stylist and author, first work out how many bags and pairs of shoes you have so that you can plan the storage accordingly. “For bag storage, I swear by canvas boxes which I buy from Homesense . Each box has a ‘theme,’ whether that’s bright clutches or useful day bags, so I know where to find each immediately. I have also switched to thin velvet hangers from TK Maxx, which streamline any bulk. With shoes I try to keep some on display, but I have lots of flats and trainers that I have to store at the bottom of the wardrobe spaces. It’s a busy, packed space, but I am really good at regularly clearing out pieces I am not wearing enough – a lot goes to resale sites, such as t he Second Row or Matisa Market , or I sell through Fashion Reboot, a project I started locally with a friend. It has to be that way because I like to see everything – otherwise you miss pieces and don’t wear them!”

Streamline your beauty products

Go for multipurpose products, says Observer beauty expert Funmi Fetto. Back in the day one could get sniffy about products that claimed to be excellent at tackling everything. Jack-of-all-trades and all that. But times have changed; formulations and knowhow are much better. Jones Road’s Miracle Balm (£36), for example, is brilliant as a bronzer and highlighter, and provides a swash of colour for eyes and lips. A good retinol like Ole Henriksen’s Double Rewind (£59) will smooth and exfoliate the skin, tackle acne flare-ups and also minimise the look of dark spots. Multitasking products are not only financial wisdom, they will save you time. And clutter.

Ditch the big stuff

It’s time to purge the home of that rusty ironing board or spare mattress for sleepovers that no longer happen. All you need is a skip, which your council may offer via a community scheme. They tour boroughs, a little like a dull pop band, setting up on your street for everyone to dump their unwanted washing machines and mattresses.

Clear the way

“Before diving into a deep clean, decluttering is essential,” say deep-cleaning experts The Cleaning Gurus . Go through each room and set aside items you no longer need or haven’t used in the past year. Make piles for charity shop donations, regifting and chucking.

One room at a time

When cleaning, work room by room, to avoid feeling overwhelmed, advise The Cleaning Gurus. Start from the top of the room and work your way down: ceilings, walls, furniture, floors. Pay special attention to overlooked areas such as skirting boards and light fixtures.

Clean your cleaning products

The things that clean your things also need cleaning, reminds Caroline Solomon ( @neat.caroline ). Wash your microfibres. Sprinkle baking soda in the drum to deodorise your washing machine. Run a dishwasher cycle with a bowl of vinegar in the top rack, and use a toothbrush to clean the filter.

Corral your cleaning products

Get yourself an easily portable task basket or container for your cleaning products with every different type of flannel, handheld brush and cleaning product you’ll need for each room, advises Benji Lewis , interior designer. Easy access and knowing that it’s all in one handy place is half the battle.

Get the children involved

“The most important tip when it comes to decluttering kids’ toys is, involve them in the process,” says declutterer and psychotherapist Kate Ibbotson , founder of A Tidy Mind. “Regularly refer to the fact that most belongings don’t last forever and letting go of the old makes space for the new. Let them see adults in the home decluttering regularly – we have to practise what we preach! Have them come with you to drop items off at a local charity shop or the recycling centre and encourage the mentality that by passing some of their toys on when they have outgrown them is a good thing. Always gain their permission before getting rid of a toy – this builds trust and makes them feel in control of the process, which will make them more confident and decisive in their decluttering decisions in future.”

Everything in its place

Home organising has little to do with hacks, but relies more on setting up sustainable systems. Pick spots for your keys, glasses, wallet and headphones. A tray can help. It’s the same effort to throw a coat on the floor as to hang it on a hook.

Van Gogh you!

If your kids love craft, don’t jam their creations into a box, says Anna Greenaway of decluttering service Thelovelytidy.com . Curate a little gallery and display their art so everyone can enjoy it. At the end of the month go through the backstock and decide what to keep, what to photograph and what to let go.

These boots are made for hiding

Keep the shoes you regularly use by the door, and the rest somewhere else.

Stick to makeup shelf-life dates

Expiry dates are there for a reason, says Funmi Fetto. If you’ve had your mascara for over three months, bin it. If your foundation has been knocking around for 18 months, bin it. If you’ve not used that lipstick for over a year… You get the gist. At best, using old products will not provide the efficacy you need. At worst, they’ll give you an infection.

Chuck dud pens and pencils

When was the last time you sharpened a pencil? Pull out all your old felt tips and pencils (or your kids’) and set up a little factory – bin those that are broken or without lids, and bring new life to the blunt and forgotten.

Bank your books

There is something exquisitely satisfying about scanning the barcode of an old book, and an app instantly offering you hard cash for it. The impulse then, of course, is to take your app (try Ziffit ) and start scanning everything in the house you want to get rid of, from candles to sons, but sadly the tech is not yet up to spec.

Show your keyboard some love

Your keyboard is disgusting. It just is. One study tested a load of computer keyboards and found they contained strains of everything from bacillus (which can make you sick) to staphylococcus aureus (which can cause upper respiratory tract infections). Here’s how to clean yours: dip an old toothbrush in a half-vinegar, half-water solution and scrub between the keys.

Towel refresh

Towels can become a breeding ground for bacteria. Recycle threadbare ones in the textile banks at your local household waste and recycling centre. For an eco-friendly softener, add a cup of white vinegar to the tray of your washing machine.

Prune kitchen gadgets

We don’t always need more storage space, we just need less stuff, says decluttering YouTuber Madeline Hegedus , AKA the Minimalist Mum. First, ask yourself: Do I really use my slow cooker? When have I last used this waffle maker? Do I avoid using this sandwich maker that’s hard to clean? How many travel water bottles do I really need? If I lost this item, would I replace it at full price?

Cupboards should work for you

Madeline Hegedus asks, are the spices and cooking oils close to the hob? Are your teabags close to the kettle? Do you have lots of random packets of rice and pasta? Before buying containers, declutter first. You might find you don’t need as many containers as you thought. It’s not about having a perfectly aesthetic cupboard, but rather a functional one that works for you. For a lean, clean pantry, take everything out, then sort products into those you can let go (toss, recycle or donate, and don’t forget to check those expiry dates) and items that belong somewhere else in your home.

Larder lovelies

There’s nothing more joyous than being able to see what you’ve got in your larder or kitchen cupboards. Sort and store according to kind. Put tins in wooden storage bins: they come in different sizes at A Place For Everything . Put pasta in clear, labelled containers. Put bags of spices and bits and pieces in Hay’s fab, bright, stackable crates .

Sort and store your jewellery

Make a feature of your jewellery storage and display favourite sentimental pieces in a glass display box. This way you can see everything at a glance and it’s easier to dust. Oliver Bonas offers all kinds of attractive and affordable jewellery storage options in colourful glass or ceramic trinket trays; having everything on display makes you more likely to wear it. Tackle larger collections with Muji’s transparent mini drawer units (from £20) and build a customised storage solution. Donate unwanted (and even broken jewellery) to alzheimers.org.uk ; donations of old jewellery have raised more than £2m so far.

Be your own bouncer

Smaller wardrobes benefit from a militant technique: one in, one out. Bought new black jeans? Out with the old. “The Jedi level is throwing out things you love, ahead of time,” says Caroline Solomon ( @neat.caroline ). “If you’ve worn a sweater to death, maybe it’s time to let go, and make space for something new.”

Regift cosmetics

Skincare and cosmetics are never returnable – which is annoying if you’ve bought the wrong shade or simply don’t like a texture or scent, says Funmi Fetto. So either re-gift it (this does not apply to mascaras. For lipsticks and creams just scrape the top off ) or, if totally unused, donate to charities like Beauty Banks , which offers drop-off in 100 Superdrug stores nationwide.

Sell wardrobe bygones

First, sort things into piles for resale and donation. You can sell items and clothes online at sites like eBay , Facebook Marketplace and Vinted – the last one is great for reselling children’s clothing and high street fashion. It’s free to list items and buyers pay the shipping charge. You can pay a fee to gain better visibility on the item feed and newsfeed using the Spotlight and Bumping options. Reluxefashion.com will evaluate your designer pieces and email you a price list. Royal Mail offers parcel collection right from your doorstep. Don’t over-fantasise the cash potential of car boot sales, advises Jenn Jordan. “You’ll wake up at 5am to drive to a field and argue with a member of the public about £1, before going home with 40-60% of what you arrived with.”

One fragrance at a time

However tempting it is to have a few on the go, try to use up one fragrance before shifting to another – that way you don’t end up with over 73 almost empty bottles that have long gone off but you still can’t bear to throw in the recycling. Ugh.

It’s easy being green

Keep it simple, using multipurpose cleaners that work on various surfaces, and eco-alternatives to harsh chemicals, to harsh chemicals, advise The Cleaning Gurus. “Or make your own, using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and essential oils.” Baking soda and white vinegar are basically magic. Other magic is available. For bleach discoloration on counter tops, Connoisseurs Jewellery Cleaner can reverse yellowing – but patch test first. Water stains in wood, meanwhile, can be evaporated using a hairdryer. Keep it moving to avoid damaging the grain.

Get rid of monsters under the bed

Feng shui tells us to avoid storing anything emotionally charged under the bed. Avoid family photos, diaries, tax papers or anything work-related. Go for something with no emotional baggage – like linens.

Height hack

Need to make more storage space under your bed? Buy bed raisers .

Oil you can eat buffet

The mesh screens in your cooker’s extractor hood can and should be removed and degreased in soapy water. Disgusting, but deeply satisfying.

Steam dream?

You can rent steam cleaners, often by the front of supermarkets. Your carpet is not the colour you think it is.

Sweeter dreams

Rotate and air your mattress, and use the upholstery attachment on the vacuum (if you haven’t lost it) to suck up any dust. By which we mean your dead skin.

Make your spoons shine

You can resparkle your tea-stained spoons by putting them in a mug with washing powder and boiling water, and leaving for an hour. If the mug was also stained? Double your money.

Microwave magic

Fill a bowl with boiling water and slices of lemon, and microwave for five minutes. Leave to sit for five minutes more, to steam clean the interior walls, then wipe them down. Put the turntable in the dishwasher.

Boiling white vinegar will descale your kettle, while immersing a detached shower head in a bowl of it will decalcify any clogged jets. Wash off before you reattach. (Having said that, a vinegar rinse leaves hair shiny and smooth, and can even treat eczema.)

Clean psychology

The act of tidying can represent a variety of emotional needs. For some, it is purely functional. Others may confront issues of control and territory. Others closely associate cleaning with being kept in mind. “Couples often talk at cross purposes,” notes Hannah Sherbersky, associate professor at Exeter University and CEO of the Association for Family Therapy. The untidier partner isn’t usually trying to communicate that they don’t care about the other, but that’s the argument that ends up being had. “They generally don’t realise there’s a bigger meaning.” If your housemates have very different ways of operating, discussing these will help you navigate competing needs.

Disappearing act

Magic erasers have been a hero product for years, cleaning crayon off walls and grass stains off white trainers. They are as abrasive as 6,000-grit sandpaper, however, so use delicately and not on precious surfaces. Cut in half to double your use.

Thanks, I love it?

Hanging on to unwanted gifts weighs us down. There’s an anxiety that friends and family “are going to come round and wonder where their stuff is. They won’t,” reassures Jenn Jordan. Often the gift is the gesture of giving, not the object itself. If needed, have a difficult conversation about your tastes and feelings about space, and steer them towards things you’d prefer.

Cool kids knowhow

If you’ve defrosted the fridge, wiggle it away from the wall and vacuum the fan and coils on the back, too.

Pomodoro it

To improve productivity and focus, try the Pomodoro management technique – set a 25-minute timer followed by a five- or even 10-minute break. Split each task, or even room, into “Pomodoro intervals”. Listen to your favourite playlist or a podcast, get into a flow state and… enjoy.

Together, Apple and suppliers are supporting over 18 gigawatts of clean energy and delivering billions of gallons in water benefits and savings

Apple today announced new progress to expand clean energy around the world and advance momentum toward Apple 2030, the company’s bold goal to be carbon neutral across its entire value chain by the end of this decade. More than 18 gigawatts of clean electricity now power Apple’s global operations and manufacturing supply chain, more than triple the amount in 2020. Apple is making new investments in solar power in the U.S. and Europe to help address the electricity customers use to charge and power their Apple devices.

As part of its broader environmental efforts, Apple also advanced progress toward another ambitious 2030 goal: to replenish 100 percent of the fresh water used in corporate operations in high-stress locations. This includes launching new partnerships to deliver nearly 7 billion gallons in water benefits — from restoring aquifers and rivers, to funding access to drinking water — over the next 20 years. As with clean energy, Apple has extended its commitment to clean water across the entire supply chain: Together, Apple suppliers saved over 12 billion gallons of fresh water last year, for a total of 76 billion gallons in water savings since the company launched its Supplier Clean Water Program in 2013.

“Clean energy and water are foundational to healthy communities and essential building blocks for a responsible business,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. “We’re racing toward our ambitious Apple 2030 climate goal while taking on the long-term work to transform electrical grids and restore watersheds to build a cleaner future for all.”

Electricity — both to manufacture Apple products and to charge and power them — makes up the largest portion of Apple’s comprehensive carbon footprint. As part of Apple 2030, the company has called on its global suppliers to use clean electricity and become carbon neutral across all their Apple-related operations. Over   320 suppliers — representing 95 percent of Apple’s direct manufacturing spend — have led the way in the transition so far, resulting in 16.5 gigawatts of renewable energy online in Apple’s supply chain today. This generated over 25.5 million megawatt-hours of clean energy across the supply chain last year, avoiding over 18.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions.

To address the greenhouse gas emissions associated with customers using their devices, Apple has pledged to match every watt of charging electricity with clean electricity by 2030, including through large-scale investments in new renewable energy in markets around the world. This is part of a broader strategy to minimize emissions from the use of Apple products through efficiency improvements, engaging with customers around opportunities to decarbonize the grid, and building clean electricity projects that maximize carbon reductions and social impact. In the U.S., Apple is investing in a portfolio of solar projects across Michigan, with construction underway to bring 132 megawatts of clean energy online later this year. In Spain, Apple has partnered with international solar development platform ib vogt on an investment that will generate 105 megawatts of solar power when the project comes online by the end of 2024.

To address its growing corporate operations in India, Apple has also embarked on a joint venture with leading renewable developer CleanMax to invest in a portfolio of six rooftop solar projects with a total size of 14.4 megawatts. The added capacity provides a local solution to power Apple’s offices, its two retail stores in the country, and other operations in India. Apple first achieved 100 percent renewable energy for its global corporate operations in 2018.

Apple’s commitment to renewable energy has unlocked new capacity in markets around the world. In 2018, Apple took an innovative approach to connect 12 of its suppliers operating in China with renewable energy sources through the China Clean Energy Fund. The Fund has now exceeded its goal, with investments resulting in over 1 gigawatt of new wind and solar projects in China across 14 provinces. In aggregate, these projects are expected to deliver over 2,400 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy each year, equivalent to the residential power consumption of over 2.5 million people in China.

Apple aims to advance water security everywhere its business reaches through collaboration across the manufacturing supply chain and innovative long-term partnerships to restore ecosystems, address community water needs, and improve climate resilience of watersheds. Since water impacts are felt locally, Apple has initiated fresh water replenishment work in some of the highest-stress locations where the company operates — including Northern and Southern California, Arizona’s Colorado River Basin, and the Indian states of Telangana and Maharashtra. Modeled after the company’s approach to renewable energy procurement, Apple is pursuing innovative strategies and long-term contracts aimed at delivering water benefits and savings across entire watersheds. Since 2023, Apple has so far committed over $8 million to replenishing fresh water in high-stress watersheds. The projects announced today are expected to deliver a combined 6.9 billion gallons of water benefits over the next two decades.

In Northern California, Apple is working with River Partners to restore the natural function of the flood plain on 750 acres where the Sacramento River, Feather River, and Butte Creek meet. This confluence of waterways — the largest in California — offers a critical resting point for native Chinook salmon along their path to the Pacific Ocean. Restoring the area will involve planting hundreds of thousands of native plants and reconnecting the vast historic flood plain, making the region and downstream communities more resilient to climate-driven flooding. Apple’s investment is expected to leverage nearly 5 billion gallons of freshwater benefits over 20 years by significantly reducing water demand on the property and encouraging healthy flood patterns to recharge underground aquifers. The restoration of Dos Rios Norte is also funded by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the California Natural Resources Agency, the California Wildlife Conservation Board, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

In the greater Phoenix area, home to Apple’s Mesa data center, Apple is working with Salt River Project (SRP) to protect approximately 30,000 acres of forest at severe risk of wildfire. With a 10-year plan to strategically thin forests in the Colorado River Basin, the project will help protect the watershed from being devastated by wildfires and ensure the upstream reservoir can continue to support local communities. Apple’s investment — the largest investment with SRP’s Resilient Water and Forest Initiative — is expected to deliver nearly 2 billion gallons of water benefits in the area.

Last year, Apple achieved its target for 100 percent water replenishment for the company’s corporate operations in India through its ongoing work with Uptime Catalyst Facility. In 2023, Apple’s support provided 23 million gallons of clean, affordable drinking water to communities from over 300 water kiosks run by local entrepreneurs in the innovative performance-based program. Progress in another critical region — Southern California — continues with a project to remove the invasive Arundo donax cane species in the Los Angeles River Watershed, saving 21 million gallons of water annually.

In addition to pursuing watershed restoration and other nature-based replenishment solutions in high-stress areas, Apple is committed to smart water stewardship across the business. In 2021, Apple’s data center in Prineville, Oregon, became the first-ever data center certified to the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) International Water Stewardship Standard, a trusted global framework for measuring responsible water stewardship. Since then, Apple has certified four additional data centers to the Standard and supported 20 supplier sites in achieving certification as well. In the past year, seven supplier sites in southern India and over 20 supplier sites near Shanghai and Suzhou in China have participated in water stewardship training with AWS and others in the industry.

In the U.S. and around the world, Apple’s Green Bonds have also helped make these new investments possible. Last year, Apple allocated proceeds from its 2019 Green Bond toward new clean energy projects like the new solar projects in Michigan and the IP Radian Solar project in Texas, support for the Supplier Clean Energy Program, and investments in high-quality carbon removal through the Restore Fund. Since 2016, Apple has issued a total of $4.7 billion in Green Bonds, with approximately $3.4 billion allocated to date.

For more information on Apple’s Green Bond efforts, visit investor.apple.com/Apple_GreenBond_Report . This year’s annual impact report covers the cumulative allocation of Apple’s 2019 Green Bond proceeds to environmental projects that incurred spend between September 29, 2019, and September 30, 2023 — Apple’s 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020 fiscal years. Sustainalytics provided a second-party opinion on the selected projects, and Ernst & Young LLP provided an attestation report on the spend.
