Center for Financial Research

Careers for Internships and Fellowships

Join the center as a…, intern or fellow.

The Center offers paid internships each year to undergraduate and graduate students to work alongside economists and research assistants in our Washington, D.C., office.

Center economists support the FDIC by conducting and publishing empirical and theoretical research on the banking industry and bank regulation, and by developing statistical and financial models to support FDIC operations.

Center economists study bank capital, bank supervision, banking industry structure, deposit insurance, executive compensation, lending, and systemic risk, among other topics, and make use of both public and restricted-access data, including regulatory filings, surveys, examination findings, and data on the operations of failed banks. The research team collaborates on projects and meets regularly, along with visiting scholars, for informal presentations and seminars.

As an intern, you will perform data analyses, help write scholarly research, assemble data, write short memoranda, and help organize seminars. You will have the opportunity to learn about banking, finance, regulatory economics, and applied statistics; learn statistical computing languages; receive training in SAS, Stata, and other statistical packages; and become proficient at data analysis.

Graduate students hired as dissertation interns work onsite on their independent research. As a dissertation intern, you will have the opportunity to present your work, participate in seminars, and meet with economists to give and receive feedback on research. Dissertation interns also have the opportunity to learn more about banking and regulatory data, to learn from subject matter experts, and to consider starting a joint research project with an FDIC economist.

Internships are limited to a one-year term, with a possible one-year extension. Interns may have the opportunity to advance to a permanent position at the FDIC.

If you have any questions or interest, please contact our recruiting coordinator Brian Johnson .

You’re likely to come across ING at Dutch universities on various occasions, such as at career fairs or as guest lecturers, and these are perfect opportunities for us to tell you more about internship opportunities in person. You can also find more details under ‘ FAQs ’ and in the description accompanying the vacancy for each individual internship.

  • Becoming an asset: Finance major turns internship into full-time job

by Mia Sheyner | May 9, 2024 | Internships , Students

Natalia Mattar

Natalia Mattar is a finance major and economics minor who turned her internship with Tandem Investment Advisors as a research analyst into a full-time investment management position. She will have many responsibilities but will mainly be researching stocks to add to the company’s portfolio.

Mattar sculpted this opportunity for herself by demonstrating her commitment and expertise during her internship, while also making strong professional connections. Her hard work and dedication were noticed by her peers and superiors, so it’s no surprise they wanted her full-time. She first got on Tandem Investment Advisors’ radar when she cold emailed them about an internship position, which speaks to her boldness and unwavering motivation. The portfolio management company recognized her ability to create and seize opportunities for herself, which is a very valuable trait in investing. After working with Mattar and seeing her capabilities in action, she became irresistible to the firm.

“I have a really strong work ethic, and I wanted to show them how hard I’m willing to work and how interested I am in what they do,” shares Mattar. “That resulted in really great results with the work I did and led to me getting an offer.”

Mattar shared her best advice for students looking to turn an internship into a full-time role.

Don’t grin and bear it, pursue something that actually interests you

To be happy within your profession, Mattar recommends that students find majors that speak to their interests. Before coming to Charleston, Mattar was on a Pre-Med track at a different university and realized it wasn’t what she wanted to pursue. Instead of ‘sticking out’ an undesired major, she followed her passions and has emphasized that to be a very rewarding decision.

That choice led to a wonderful job, as well as meeting people with similar interests and aspirations.

Get comfortable with interviews

Prior to Tandem, Mattar admits she wasn’t great at them. However, companies need employees that have strong interpersonal skills, and an interview is how they determine that.

“Through practice and realizing that it’s just another conversation with someone, they become much easier” she says. “A lot of it is showing your work ethic, showing that you are interested in the company, what they do, and what you can bring to the table.”

Become a self-starter

Once you’ve landed the role, whether it be an internship for full-time position, take the initiative and create your own momentum in the workplace. Having the determination to apply yourself paired with the capacity to keep learning is the best way to excel in your field.

“We should continuously allow ourselves to keep absorbing information, especially as young professionals starting out since workplace experience can be more lucrative than classroom learning,” says Mattar.

Cultivate positive relationships with colleagues

Mattar believes co-workers should be people you can have relaxed conversations about shared interests with, either work related or not. A huge part of being content with your job is the people you are surrounded by every day.

“The Tandem team is amazing and helps me broaden my knowledge within finance,” she shares.

Maintain a good work-life balance

Going from being a college student to a full-time employee in the workforce takes some adjustment. According to Mattar, hobbies and making time for yourself can actually improve your focus and productivity on the clock.

With hopes of a CFA on the horizon, this bright young professional is setting the curve, and will continue to establish herself with Tandem Investment Advisors after graduating this spring!

200 Finance Dissertation Topics: Quick Ideas For Students

finance dissertation topics

Finance dissertation topics are on-demand in the 21st century. But why is this so? It may perplex you how everyone is up and down looking for interesting, quality finance topics. However, the answer is simple: because fascinating finance dissertation topics can earn students bonus points.

We will delve into that in just a second. Your finance topic dictates the difficulty of the assignment you are going to handle. Landing on the right topic means that you will not have to toil as much as when you pick a highly complex topic. Does it make sense?

Let’s explore the nitty-gritty of finance dissertation papers before we get into mentioning the top-rated finance research topics list.

What Is A Finance Dissertation?

As the name goes, finance dissertation is a kind of writing that investigates a particular finance topic selected by the student. The topics range from the stock market, banking, and risk management to healthcare finance topics.

This dissertation provides the student with a degree of academic self-confidence and personal satisfaction in the finance field. Finance writing requires extensive research to create a persuasive paper in the end.

Writing Tips For Finance Dissertations

Are you uncertain concerning what you need to do to compose a top-notch finance dissertation? Worry no more! Our professional writers have put together some essential suggestions to kick you off. In the next few minutes, you will be in a position to create a perfect finance dissertation painstakingly:

  • Narrow down your topic : Trim down your finance topic to a specific niche. It should focus on one region; either micro-finance, macro-finance, or internet banking.
  • Verify your facts : Finance is a field that includes a lot of statistical data to be followed logically. Therefore, verify facts and figures with reliable sources before opting to use them in your paper.
  • Write concisely : Unlike other papers with long narrative tales, you should encapsulate a finance paper into a tight, concise paper. The rule of ‘short is sweet’ technically applies here at great length.
  • Arrange your data neatly : A paper that is stuffed with numerals and charts all over may turn down a reader at first sight. For an impressive finance thesis, know-how and when to use your data.
  • Write simply : Avoid jargon that may confuse an ordinary reader. Where a need is for technical terms to be used, illustrate them with relatable examples. Simplicity is gold in a finance dissertation. So, use it well.

With these tips and tricks, you are all set to start writing your finance paper. We now advance to another crucial part that will make sure your finance paper is refined and at per with your institution’s academic standards.

General Structure of a Finance Dissertation

It is crucial to consult your supervisor regarding your dissertation’s research methodology, structure, style, and reasonable length. Depending on the guidance of your supervisor, the structure may vary. Nonetheless, as a general guide, ensure the following sections are part and parcel of your dissertation:

  • Introduction: State the problem that you intend to address in your dissertation. It also includes a definition of key terms, the relevance of the topic and a summary of hypotheses.
  • Theoretical and empirical literature, hypotheses development and contribution: It provides the theoretical framework of your study. The hypotheses are based on the literature review.
  • Data and methodology: State the model (i.e. dependent and key independent variables) that you want to use the drawing on theoretical framework or economic argument that you may employ for your analysis. Define all control variables and describe the data used to test the hypothesis.
  • Empirical results: Describe the results and mention whether they are consistent with the hypotheses and relate them with the existing evidence in the literature. You will also describe the statistical and practical/economic significance of your findings.
  • Summary and conclusion: Summarize your research and state the general conclusion with relevant implications.

It is important to have all the dataset you want to use readily available before finalizing the topic. The dataset is essential for testing your hypotheses.

There are thousands of research topics for finance students available all over the internet and academic books. You only have to browse and lookup for the latest research or refer to past readings or course lectures.

Even though this exercise may look simple enough on the surface, it takes a lot of time to consider what makes for interesting finance topics adequately. Not all ideas you find will achieve the academic requirements that your supervisor expects from you.

Here is a list of freshly mint topics to use for numerous finance situations:

Rick Jansen, Engineering intern

Taylor Huang, HR intern

“Working in the HR department has challenged me to think outside the box. I collaborate with people from many different countries and all my colleagues always support me. I learn new things every day.”

Internships application process

The selection process may differ slightly for each internship assignment but will generally follow these four phases.

Take your time to create a well-presented, relevant and clear CV and motivation letter that show why you want to work at ASML. You’ll get a confirmation email once we’ve received your application, and we’ll let you know the status of your application within two weeks.

The first selection phase is an online, pre-recorded interview. If you are selected for this phase, you’ll be invited to record your answers to a few pre-determined questions via the tool HireVue. We’re looking to learn more about the real you.

We’ll review your video within seven business days and if you’re chosen, you’ll be invited for an interview. An interview is a great opportunity for us to get to know you but also for you to get to know us and gain some insight into what it’s like to be part of ASML.

A few days after the interview, we’ll inform you if you’ve been selected to start your internship at ASML.

Contact our coordinators for more information about internships or graduation projects. Unfortunately it's not possible to submit an open application.

ASML hires interns throughout the year. During the year we offer new assignments, with May and November being the months, which we have available most of the assignments.

Search ASML internships  to view open internships in the Netherlands and the US. Click the "Apply now" button, which will direct you to the ASML career portal where you can submit your application.

Although an internship at ASML can last up to one year, most of our internships are for a period of three months.

ASML hires interns from a range of technical and non-technical fields of study and from vocational, bachelor's and master's-degree education programs.

We recommend applying at least three months before your desired internship start date. We'll need four weeks before your start date to complete our pre-onboarding process that will enable you to start working on your assignment from day one. In addition, if you have a non-EU nationality and you're not studying in the Netherlands, we advise you to start applying six months in advance, as you will need to obtain a Dutch work permit to be able to complete your internship in the Netherlands.

You will sign an ASML internship agreement (work contract). Since you'll be working with confidential information at ASML, you and your internship supervisor from your school will need to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Students with a non-EU nationality who are studying in the Netherlands will also need to sign a tripartite agreement together with their educational institution.

Although our selection process may change slightly depending on the internship, it generally consists of four steps: First, you'll apply with your CV and motivation letter. Then, if your CV is selected, you'll complete an online, pre-recorded video interview using HireVue. After this, we'll let you know within seven business days if we've chosen to invite you for an interview. You'll find out a few days after the interview if you've been chosen to start your internship at ASML.
