How Much Should Parents Pay for Tutoring?

iStockphoto

Determine Your Budget

Consider your options, be realistic, ask for assistance.

Whether your child is struggling in a particular subject or you want to address learning gaps from COVID-19 or another life event that's caused them to miss school, hiring a tutor can be hugely beneficial. Tutoring provides valuable one-on-one time for your child, and regular sessions also give your child an opportunity to work through homework assignments, stay organized, learn how to plan ahead, and prep for tests.

Overall, there are three primary types of tutoring available:

  • Online tutoring
  • Private tutors
  • Corporate tutoring centers

When considering hiring a tutor for your child, it can feel overwhelming trying to evaluate your options and budget for the fees. If these challenges resonate with you, here are some tips to help you plan and budget for your child's tutoring expenses.

Before you can develop a budget for tutoring services, you need to take a look at your monthly income and expenses. Ask yourself how much money can be set aside for tutoring services. If money is tight, you may need to find areas where you can cut to make room for tutoring costs.

This might mean cutting back on the number of times you eat out or eliminating any extras you spend money on. If making cuts aren't an option for you, look into other options for tutoring like free services provided by schools, churches, and other community organizations.

Sometimes parents may qualify for free tutoring under the No Child Left Behind Act, which provides free tutoring for low-income families that attend a Title 1 school. There are even online learning options like Khan Academy, which provide free videos that help students with different concepts.

Overall, there are a number of tutoring options available. With a little legwork, you are sure to find an option that fits your budget and your student's needs.

Depending on the type of tutoring you select, the costs of a tutor per hour can range from about $15 per hour to as much as $100 an hour or more. Rates are usually based on the tutor's experience, the type of tutoring you want, and the amount of time spent with your student.

Along with professional tutors, corporate tutoring services, and online tutoring, some parents are turning to college students who are majoring in education for the tutoring assistance they need. For example, Abbie St. Clair, a sophomore early childhood education major at Ohio University, worked with a number of families to provide a combination of childcare and educational assistance during the 2020-2021 school year.

Because many of the school districts in her area were providing a hybrid model to education—meaning they are only in a school building twice a week—St. Clair offered drop-in services for a core group of families.

For $13 to $15 per hour, she stopped in to check on kids, make lunch, help them with homework , keep them on task, and tutor them in areas where they were struggling. St. Clair says students sometimes are more productive with a tutor because they can quickly become frustrated working with a parent.

"[Sometimes] a child is more willing to do work or read with someone they are not familiar with rather than their parents," she says. "Plus, parents do not always have time to help their children with schoolwork, especially if they are working. What I do allows their children to not only get help with schoolwork but allows parents to feel relieved that their children are being checked on, that they ate lunch, and that they are ready for the day."

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been growing interest in online tutoring and virtual learning environments. These services tend to be more affordable and allow students to get the help they need from the privacy and safety of their own homes.

Remember that when you are budgeting for a tutor, you are hiring a professional that may rely on this income. So it's important to be realistic about the kind of help that you can get for your child.

If you have $150 a month to spend on tutoring and you think that your child needs about 2 to 3 hours of help per week or 12 hours per month, that means that you have an average of $12.50 per hour to spend on tutoring.

Most private tutors or corporate tutoring centers charge much more than that. Consequently, getting a private tutor may not be an option unless you utilize a private tutor once a month and supplement the rest of the time with online tutoring, free tutoring options, homework help options, and tutoring from your child's teacher.

For instance, Jennifer Kirk, a math and algebra teacher with a gifted certification who has taught in Texas and in central Ohio, charges $35 an hour for her services, and she is on the low end.

Most licensed teachers charge $45 to $60 an hour for tutoring. Kirk says she's been advised by her peers to charge more for her services because of her credentials, but her desire to help students and families motivates her to keep her fees low.

If hiring a teacher or a professional tutor is not an option for your family, some online tutoring services are more affordable. For instance, at Chegg Tutors you can get a chat session with a professional tutor for $7.

Chegg also offers a monthly plan that costs $15 per month for unlimited chat sessions. And if your child needs to visually interact with someone while chatting, $30 per month will get you 60 minutes of video sessions.

Kirk says that there are even some YouTube subscriptions that offer tutoring videos. But the risk you run with that, she says, is that you cannot be sure that these online videos will provide your student the help that they need. Regardless of your situation, Kirk advises that you not procrastinate on getting your child help.

"I would not wait on getting tutoring help for your child," she says. "If there is a foundational concept that will help them be more successful, you need to be sure they are mastering that now. Missing one crucial concept could cause the student to be lost for the rest of the year."

As you begin to research your tutoring options, be sure you talk to your child's teacher. Many times, teachers can not only provide you with suggestions for tutoring services but also information about free options for support.

For instance, some teachers offer help through study groups or office hours where students who are struggling can get help. Teachers also can provide suggestions on where to get additional help at no cost.

"Ideally, every teacher is indicating how to contact them," says Kirk. "Our school is using a hybrid model for education, so we have office hours on Wednesdays with a link where kids can click in and ask questions or get assistance."

Kirk says libraries or churches are also good resources for kids who need help with their courses and recommends looking into that in your area to see if it's available. "In our community, the library had a homework help center available to students. It is a good place for kids to go and work with an adult on their homework," she says.

She says her school also offers the WISE program, which stands for Winning Interventions for Student Excellence, that offers direct intervention and tutoring from an academic coach on a regular basis.

A Word From Verywell

When planning and budgeting for your child's tutoring, it's important to consider not only your child's needs but also your budgetary restrictions. Try not to get discouraged if money is tight. With a little creativity, you can find the perfect tutoring solution for your kids that doesn't break the bank in the process.

Math tutoring is accessible for all ages and all levels of math study—elementary, high school, and college students. From learning the foundational principles of multiplication to understanding calculus, gaining an understanding of the reasoning behind math can turn a student’s math grades from F’s to A’s. Math spans many different levels and pricing models, so tutoring is priced as follows:

Private math tutoring

High school and college math teachers tend to charge more per hour than math students or college graduates. They also base their prices on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons usually last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

North County Tutoring Service, San Diego, CA | from $25/half hour

Harrison Quinn, Hialeah, FL | from $50/hour

Charles, Miami, FL | sliding scale

Kenneth, Fort Lauderdale, FL | $50/hour

Grade level math lessons

Individual tutors prefer teaching certain math subjects based on their degrees or teaching experience, which typically correlate to certain age groups. For instance,  Stabile’s Math Tutoring, Brooklyn, NY  charges $75-100/hour, dependent on travel time. He teaches math for grade 6 and up, is a NY state certified adolescent mathematics teacher, and has an MA in adolescent mathematics education plus a BA in finance.

Group math sessions

Some learning centers will provide after school math lessons, but the tutoring will be less individualized because the hour must be spread between the number of students. Other tutors are willing to teach sibling groups or teach at home school co-ops. The cost can then be spread between the number of children in the class.

Group math tutoring

Rates for Children’s math tutoring

Most tutors for the more foundational levels of math charge less per hour, teaching addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions to those who need to catch up to their grade level or to make the transition to elementary or middle school easier. For example,  English, Math, and Science Tutor, Irvine, CA  charges her students $25/hour, and teaches math to 5-14-year-olds. She is a qualified Primary teacher with more than 10 years of teaching experience.

Package discounts

Many tutors or learning centers will give a discount if a group of five to ten lessons is booked and paid for up front. Some will offer a complimentary consultation before signing up for lessons. Others offer a monthly price, and some offer after school group skill practice programs or homework help at a group price.

Standalone specialties

Some tutors prefer to teach only one category of math, despite having the qualifications to teach many categories, because they feel they can give students a greater understanding of that particular math skill than others. For example, the tutor below, Sarah K., mostly teaches hearing impaired students, while the second tutor, Myles, enjoys helping students do well in the SAT or ACT exams.

Sarah K. Math, Miami, FL | Specialty is Algebra 1

SAT/ACT Math Tutor, Fort Lauderdale, FL | Specialty is SAT and ACT prep

Math scores and degrees are a good indicator of how well a tutor knows the subject matter, and some teachers have helped entire classes pass their grade-level math. Some teachers are a better fit for a certain personality than others.

When researching a learning center rather than an individual, you can get a good idea early on as to how good the tutors are through review sites or through the learning center’s public rating system.

Tutors are often willing to come to the home or meet at a local library or coffee shop. The price of travel will either be additional or included in the cost of the hourly rate. Most tutors are flexible on your choice of hours and preferred days of the week for sessions.

A Beginner's Guide To Hiring a Tutor for Your Child

Raising a smart kid is a team sport. That's why parents often seek tutors to help their children overcome academic challenges. Here's how to choose the right one.

Should You Hire a Tutor for Your Child?

  • Tutoring Costs

Types of Tutoring

Parents want their children to do well in school and enjoy being students . But no kid is going to excel in every subject all the time, which can leave kids and parents feeling frustrated. All kids have unique strengths and challenges, and some need more academic support than others. Success in school also requires bolstering a child's self-esteem , socio-emotional health, executive function, and engagement with learning. Tutoring can help with all this and more.

There are many options available to your child for extra academic support. For some families, this support comes in the form of a tutor. According to July 2015 research conducted by Statista, 26% of parents in the US have paid for additional tutoring, and 43% would consider it.

We asked Eric Kim, co-owner and program director of LA Tutors in Los Angeles, and Rachel Horwitz, tutor and manager of Scholastic Achievement with the Massachusetts-based JBG Educational Group, to break down different tutoring options and explain how to know whether or not a tutor is right for your family. Here's what they have to say about hiring a tutor for your child.

Whether or not to hire a tutor for your child is a personal decision. You'll need to weigh potential benefits against the costs in time, transportation, and money. Investing in a tutor isn't possible or practical for everyone. However, if it's feasible for your family's schedule and budget, tutoring can help kids with a variety of challenges from grades and study skills to college applications.

Usually, parents will consider tutoring if their child needs additional academic support with a specific subject, their grades are slipping, or for general homework help. Kids might be failing a subject, struggling with engagement, or having trouble keeping up with the workload. Others may need additional support to fully understand the material or want to take content to deeper levels than offered at their school.

It can be helpful to discuss the possible benefits of tutoring with your child as well as their teachers or other relevant school staff. Sometimes school assessments can be done to let you know about any learning differences or specific areas or skills your child may need extra help with. Cost is another important factor to consider. However, low-cost or free tutoring is often available online or in person through other community resources.

If tutoring seems like a good fit, some parents choose to enroll their kids in online tutoring, while others enlist the help of an older student. Another option is to hire a private instructor. Tutoring programs are available at many schools as well. You might choose tutoring targeted to a specific goal, such as help with writing a paper or preparing for exams, or for more general aims like improving organization and regular homework completion.

Not every child will benefit from tutoring, particularly if they are not willing or engaged participants or the tutoring program isn't a good fit. So, it's helpful to assess (and encourage) your child's buy-in before committing to hiring a tutor. However, studies show that extracurricular tutoring can make a big impact on a student's cognitive ability and academic performance, especially when a child is tutored at least three times a week for more than 30 minutes.

"There isn't a 'right time' to hire a tutor other than when it is right for your student," Horwitz says. "However, additional educational support is best sought out when students would benefit from one-on-one instruction to improve a specific subject or skill."

How Much Does Tutoring Cost?

The cost of tutoring varies widely, depending on the type of tutoring you're seeking, the subject matter, and where you live. Informal tutoring is usually free or low-cost. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 82% of public schools offer some tutoring for students, so it's worthwhile to ask your child's teacher or principal about what's available. Online courses generally have a set rate.

One-on-one tutoring sessions are typically the most expensive option and can cost up to hundreds of dollars an hour. "Prices range anywhere from $30 to $200 an hour, depending on the quality and caliber of your tutor," Kim says. "Independent tutors usually charge less, but working with a company comes with perks, like a satisfaction guarantee and the knowledge that a reputable company has vetted and trained your tutor already."

There are different types of tutors for different needs. Homework help tutors, for example, assist students in homework completion. Test prep tutors help students with exam preparation, and general education tutors offer overall coaching and support. There are also learning disability tutors, English as a second language (ESL) tutors, college admissions tutors , and subject-specific tutors—to name a few—with each type of tutor falling into a very specific category.

Informal tutoring

Informal tutoring is not one-size-fits-all. The term can be applied to any teaching that takes place outside of a formal classroom setting. This may mean asking older students who are strong in a subject to help your child with their homework. "Working with an older sibling or cousins can be an option if they are willing to donate their time," says Kim.

It could also mean talking with your child's teacher about additional study time. Many districts offer after-school programs for help with homework, essay writing, and more. Similarly, most public libraries, YMCAs, and a variety of other community organizations offer programs to assist with schoolwork, too.

Online tutoring

If you are looking for a more formal or in-depth approach, online tutoring can be an attractive and affordable option. It's flexible, convenient, and can be catered to your needs. Most online courses tend to be self-paced, which means that your materials and coursework are accessible at any time. In most cases, these programs are pre-written and pre-structured. Your child will be following a specific curriculum and course.

While online tutoring programs work well for self-motivated kids, they aren't right for everyone. Some children may hide behind their screens and not fully engage with the material. Others need more individualized attention. Be patient, versatile, flexible, and listen to your child. You should also explore your options.

Outschool , for example, is a platform that has over 140,000 interactive online classes and camps, while Learn To Be , UpChieve , Varsity Tutors , and Tutors for Change offer low-cost tools to improve children's academic performance and learning skills, many of which are one-on-one.

Private tutoring

If informal or online tutoring isn't working, you might need a tutor who offers regular, in-person sessions. Some students need more personalized support or to be away from the distraction of a computer. One-on-one tutoring, or private tutoring, is ideal for students looking to focus on a specific subject or task, like reading or math .

Private tutoring is fully customizable, which is a huge benefit to those working toward a specific goal. It is also interactive. Your student is always engaged, so they can't hide or sit silently in the back.

It's important to note, however, that private tutoring can be cost-prohibitive. The average cost of a one-on-one tutor is $50 an hour.

Still, one-on-one sessions are best for some, and they might help identify more serious learning difficulties that can be overcome by working with a specialist. Children's Dyslexia Centers can help parents find reputable resources, for example. Properly diagnosing and treating learning disorders in children can help students succeed in school and help educators know how to teach your child most effectively.

Standardized test prep

Standardized test preparation may include a big financial commitment for parents of college-bound kids. The alphabet soup of SAT, ACT, MLAT, GMAT, MCAT, and more can feel so overwhelming that hiring a tutor often feels like a must.

However, there are many free or low-cost online standardized test prep resources and courses available online. Khan Academy is a trusted resource for free learning tools. Varsity Tutors has a free course, and students can take free practice tests and/or access low-cost tools before resorting to pricier programs, like Princeton Review .

If you choose a private tutor, Horwitz recommends that families find someone who can specialize their approach to each student, as different people struggle with different sections—and different exams require different experts. "A one-size-fits-all approach will not be helpful to most students," she advises.

Key Takeaways

Whether your child is struggling in a specific subject or could just use a little extra help overall, hiring a tutor can offer the support they need. There are also lots of free and low-cost options available online or via after-school programs at many schools. Reach out to your child's teacher or school administration staff to help you find a tutor, study courses, and other ways to support your child's academic journey.

Most plans come with a better guarantee, and pricing starts at $40/month for one hour per month and goes up to $1,450 for 50 on-demand hours over six months (which divides out to $29/hour).

Revolution Prep

revolution prep logo

Revolution Prep boasts that its staff is made up of 100% full-time faculty — no side-hustlers here — who do more than 150 hours of training and development. (The site claims there are Jeopardy! champs and Ph.D.s in their ranks.) But you'll pay for their expertise: Private tutoring is $1,200 for 12 hours, and small-group test prep is $400 for 12 hours.

best online tutoring websites skooli

Skooli has a pay-as-you-go pricing plan of $0.82 per minute, which is good if you want to use a tutor every once in a while when you're stuck on a tricky homework question or want some last-minute study help; you're not locked into a monthly plan, and you can connect to tutors 24/7. The site has tutors for all subjects and grade levels, including ESL and business courses.

Smarthinking

best online tutoring websites   smarthinking

Pearson's Smarthinking boasts that 90% of its tutors have advanced degrees in their subject areas, so they know their stuff. There are tutors for every subject, but writing is the emphasis — as are resume reviews and interview prep, when it comes time for your student to enter the workforce. Prices range from $25 for an essay or resume review to $125/month for four hours of online tutoring.

SpecialEdTutoring.com

best online tutoring websites   specialedtutoringcom

Students with special needs require tutors who understand their learning styles. All of the this site's tutors have at least a Bachelor's Degree in special education, and the tutors find that the students do well with online tutoring because they're in a comfortable and familiar setting (ie, home). Rates start at $25/hour.

tutoreye logo

TutorEye offers tons of flexibility in how it offers its services: You can choose between a live study session with a whiteboard-enabled classroom help or written, step-by-step help — and you can decide if you want to commit to a monthly plan or just do pay-per-minute. The pay-as-you-go system costs $0.50 per minute, while monthly plans start at $50 for two hours.

best online tutoring websites tutorme

TutorMe claims it only accepts 4% of the tutors who apply to work with the site, so students only receive the best instructors. Lessons take place in a virtual classroom with a whiteboard, text editor, audio/video chat, and screen-sharing capabilities, and afterwards the lessons are archived for later review. Prices range from $1/minute for quick homework help to $119/month for four hours of lessons.

Varsity Tutors

best online tutoring websites varsity tutors

For a truly mobile tutoring experience, Varsity Tutors has an innovative app and online portal that lets tutors and students edit documents or work on math problems collaboratively. It's helpful for students who may need help when they're away from their laptops, either between classes or before sports practice. Varsity Tutors also has new monthly learning memberships that provide both 1-on-1 tutoring hours + access to unlimited live classes in a variety of subjects. Pricing starts at $269/month.

Wyzant boasts it has more than 80,000 instructors lined up ready to help students with their studies. There are also a huge number of lessons already archived on the site, so students can brush up on popular concepts and quiz themselves to see where their weak areas are before booking a tutor. Prices vary by tutor and level of expertise.

body-homework-chalkboard

Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help
  • Tips for getting the most out of a homework help website

So let’s get started!

exclamation-point-g8c97d47db_640

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

body-gold-piggy-bank-money

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

body_stophand

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

I tutor the children of some of Dubai's richest people. One of them paid me $3,000 to do his homework.

  • A 25-year-old private tutor told BI about his experiences working in the UAE.
  • He said he had taught the children of some of Dubai's richest people.
  • One of his pupils paid him $3,000 to do his homework, he said.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with a 25-year-old private tutor and academic governor in Dubai. They were granted anonymity to speak freely about their experiences. This essay has been edited for length and clarity. The names of children have been removed to protect their identity.

I moved to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2020 to work for an international tutoring agency.

I've since taught children from some of Dubai's most elite families — millionaires and billionaires who had made their money from oil investments, tech startups, and other entrepreneurial ventures.

One of the families I taught lived in one of Dubai's most expensive apartments, which boasted an art room, a massage room, a gym, and a cinema. It was spread over five floors and also had a private elevator and guard dogs on the door.

Families like these often had dozens of staff, including security, maids, drivers, cooks, nannies, and, of course, tutors.

The parents often weren't around, but those I did encounter were almost always friendly to me.

I had most contact with the nannies, who were at the children's beck and call.

They would cook me dinner and bring me drinks, and I almost felt like I was a part of the family, sort of like a big brother.

One of my younger pupils had his own bespoke classroom in the family house — it was better equipped than anything you'd ever see in a normal school.

Having finished an arts and crafts class with him one time, I said we needed to clean up the mess.

"Absolutely not," he said. "I do not pay you to clean. I pay her to clean," as he pointed at the nanny.

With another child, who was around seven at the time, we had been studying birds in biology and he demanded we get an owl to observe it.

The next time I went to the house, an owl was perched on the kitchen counter.

Another student was told by his brother to "not bother doing any work" because "Dad would sort it out." He then paid me $3,000 to do his homework for him.

But this was normal behavior in Dubai, as the kids were used to extreme wealth.

The families would give me with gifts

These sorts of financial "incentives" were by no means rare.

Sometimes, the parents would go to great lengths to start a bidding war with one another.

If they knew I would be at one client's house at a time they wanted, they would offer to pay double, triple, or even more to convince me to come to them instead.

And each time I thought I'd seen it all, the job would find new ways of surprising me.

One time, my car broke down, and I turned up late for a lesson with one of my regular pupils. I told the mother the reason I was late, and the next time I had a class with that child, she gave me $7,000 in cash to pay for repairs.

The same family gave me a huge tip of more than $20,000 at the end of the year.

I spent the summer sailing the Italian coast on a yacht

Last summer, I was hired to look after two brothers, who were four and six years old. Their family had planned a trip on their private yacht and were looking to sail along the Italian coast for two months.

A few weeks after signing the contract, I found myself in a speedboat heading across the Mediterranean toward a superyacht the size of a ferry.

As I joined my new employers on the deck, uniformed staff offered Champagne (although I was not allowed to drink while working), and I spent the next few months jet-skiing, paddle-boarding, touring vineyards, and eating expensive foods.

This family was from Russia, and there was a marked difference in the way they treated me, often wanting to keep me out of sight.

While they partied on the upper levels, I was told to stay below deck.

They had hired me to be a kind of glorified babysitter for their kids, playing with them and keeping them entertained while speaking English to them.

For the Russian elite, having someone who speaks English with a native accent is a big boasting point.

Perhaps one of the funnier moments was when we returned to their villa on the south coast of France. On either side of the front door were two stone busts of the father's face.

Teach English in Moscow, Russia

The heart of Russia, Moscow , stands as a proud emblem of the country's rich history and its ambitious stride towards the future. Stretching its vast expanse across the banks of the Moskva River, the city boasts iconic landmarks like the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and the Bolshoi Theatre, all of which narrate tales of Russia’s tsarist past, Soviet era, and its contemporary significance. But beyond the historical and political importance, Moscow is a vibrant metropolis, bustling with modernity while still deeply rooted in its traditions. As a juxtaposition of the old and new, it offers a unique setting for English teachers looking to immerse themselves in a culture that's both familiar in its urban dynamics and intriguingly foreign in its customs and nuances.

Reasons to Teach English in Moscow

Demand for English : With Moscow's status as a global city and a significant business hub, there's a growing demand for English proficiency. Businesses, students, and even tourists seek English language skills, creating ample opportunities for English teachers.

Experience Rich Culture : Moscow is a treasure trove of arts, music, and literature. From the classical ballet performances at the Bolshoi Theatre to the literary legacy of writers like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, teachers can immerse themselves in a deeply enriching cultural experience.

Competitive Salaries : The demand for native English speakers often comes with attractive salaries and benefits. While the cost of living can be high in the city center, smart budgeting and living slightly outside can offer a comfortable lifestyle.

Learning Russian : While teaching English, educators also get the chance to learn Russian, a language spoken by over 250 million people worldwide. It's not just an addition to your skill set but a window into understanding the Russian psyche and culture better.

Architectural Beauty : Moscow is an architectural paradise. From the onion domes of St. Basil’s to the modern skyscrapers of Moscow City, the urban landscape is a constant source of awe and wonder.

Gateway to Explore Russia : Moscow's extensive railway network and air connectivity make it a perfect base to explore the vast expanse of Russia, from the cultural streets of St. Petersburg to the natural wonders of Siberia.

Diverse Student Base : Teachers often find themselves instructing a mix of students, from young learners and university students to business professionals and retirees. This diversity makes the teaching experience varied and rewarding.

Experience Four Seasons : Moscow showcases all four seasons in their full glory. The snow-covered winter landscapes are iconic, but the spring blossoms, summer warmth, and autumn hues are equally mesmerizing.

Local Cuisine : Dive into the world of Russian gastronomy! From the hearty borscht and pelmeni to the sweet blini and syrniki, Moscow offers a culinary journey that's both diverse and delightful.

Unique Teaching Environment : Moscow has a mix of international schools, language centers, and private tutoring opportunities. This allows teachers to choose a teaching environment that aligns best with their preferences and expertise.

Understanding Moscow's Education Landscape

Moscow, being the capital city of Russia and its major economic, cultural, and scientific center, naturally has a dense concentration of educational institutions. The education landscape here is diverse, ranging from state-run schools and prestigious universities to private institutions and language centers. English is a sought-after language, and with Moscow's aspiration to be an influential player on the global stage, the emphasis on learning English has grown significantly.

There's a notable presence of international schools, catering primarily to expatriates and the elite class, which offers International Baccalaureate or British curricula. Additionally, language centers scattered across the city cater to various age groups and professions. Here, the focus might range from general English to more specialized courses like Business English. There's also a growing trend of private tutoring, where teachers offer personalized lessons to students, either one-on-one or in small groups.

Eligibility and Requirements to Teach English in Moscow

The requirements to teach English in Moscow will be similar to the standard requirements for teaching English in Russia , however, here are the specific requirements for Moscow:

Bachelor's Degree : A bachelor's degree in any field is typically required, though those with degrees in education or English might have an edge.

TEFL/TESOL/CELTA Certification : Most employers prefer candidates with a teaching certification, with a minimum of 120 hours of training.

Native English Speaker : Preference is often given to teachers from native English-speaking countries. However, non-native speakers with strong proficiency and credentials can also find opportunities.

Experience : Previous teaching experience, while not always mandatory, can significantly boost job prospects, especially in more esteemed institutions.

Background Check : A clean criminal record is essential, and a background check is standard procedure for most teaching positions.

Understanding of Russian Culture : While not a formal requirement, having an appreciation and understanding of Russian culture can be beneficial, both in the classroom and in day-to-day life.

Visa and Work Permit : It's crucial to secure the appropriate visa and work permit. Employers often assist with this process, but it's essential to ensure everything is in order.

Salary and Benefits for Teaching English in Moscow

Competitive Salaries : Depending on qualifications, experience, and the type of institution, monthly salaries can range from 60,000 to 120,000 Russian rubles. International schools and prestigious language centers tend to offer higher salaries.

Contract Completion Bonus : It's common for institutions to offer bonuses upon successful completion of a contract.

Health Insurance : Comprehensive health insurance is usually provided, which is a significant benefit given the varied quality of healthcare in Russia.

Paid Vacations : Teachers typically receive paid vacations, especially during significant public holidays and school breaks.

Professional Development : Some institutions offer or subsidize courses and workshops for teachers to further enhance their skills.

Contract Flexibility : Contracts can range from a few months for summer camps to a full academic year. Some contracts also offer the option for renewal.

Living in Moscow

The majestic and historical city of Moscow is Russia's pulsating heart, offering an eclectic blend of ancient traditions and modern urbanism. Living in Moscow presents a unique experience that's both challenging and rewarding. The city’s juxtaposition of centuries-old architecture with contemporary skyscrapers is a testament to its rich history and its eyes set firmly on the future.

1. Cultural and Historical Hub: Moscow is home to some of the world's most iconic landmarks, including the Kremlin, Red Square, and the Bolshoi Theatre. The city's museums, like the State Historical Museum and the Pushkin Museum, offer deep dives into Russia's intricate history and art.

2. Cost of Living: While salaries for English teachers are competitive, Moscow is one of the more expensive cities in Russia. Rent, dining out, and entertainment can be pricey, especially in the city center. However, with smart budgeting and by leveraging local markets and public transportation, it's manageable.

3. Transportation: Moscow boasts one of the world's most extensive metro systems. Not only is it efficient and affordable, but its stations are also often hailed as architectural masterpieces, adorned with mosaics, chandeliers, and sculptures. Buses and trams supplement the metro, making it easy to navigate the city.

4. Climate: Moscow experiences a continental climate, with cold winters where temperatures can drop below -20°C and warm summers that can reach up to 30°C. Snowfall during winters transforms the city into a winter wonderland, especially around the New Year when it's festively decorated.

5. Language: While Russian is the predominant language, younger generations and professionals often have a basic understanding of English. Still, learning basic Russian phrases can immensely help in daily life and is appreciated by locals.

6. Local Cuisine: Moscow offers a diverse culinary scene. Apart from international cuisines, traditional Russian dishes like borscht, pelmeni, and blinis are must-tries. The city also has a growing café culture, perfect for those who love their coffee.

7. Social Scene: The city is bustling with theaters, clubs, bars, and live music venues. Whether you're into classical performances at the Bolshoi or contemporary gigs at a local club, Moscow has something for every taste.

8. Safety: Like any major city, it's essential to be cautious, especially during the night or in less populated areas. However, Moscow generally has a low crime rate, especially concerning violent crimes against foreigners.

Anele from South Africa:

"I initially came to Moscow for a short stint, but the city's energy drew me in. Teaching here is different from back home. Siobhan from Ireland:

"I've taught in various countries, but Moscow stands out. The blend of history, culture, and the modern hustle is unique. The students here are disciplined and eager to grasp the nuances of the English language. On a personal note, the ballet performances at the Bolshoi are something I'll cherish forever."
