The World Cup football match and the Olympics are held worldwide with great national support and expectations. As a fan of those competitions, I am totally convinced that sporting events can be necessary for international relations and national unity.

[do_widget id=custom_html-24]

First of all, the World Cup, Olympics, and other international games work for easing tensions among different nations. For example, South and North Korea have football games regularly, which gives the two countries a chance to understand each other deeply. In the mid-1990s, hundreds of North Korean supporters came to South Korea with the footballers, and they were very excited during the sporting events. Even if it sounds ridiculous, many South Koreans were quite surprised at that moment when North Koreans shouted and cried during the match. We all realized that they were very ordinary sports fans even though they were occasionally very secretive . Through sports, two divided nations could reduce their political and ideological tensions and could feel patriotic unity .

[do_widget id=custom_html-47]

On the other hand, some sports matches can make international relations worse. For instance, football or baseball games between Korea and Japan are always big matches in the two countries where full tensions overflow . Sometimes, after the matches, the two rivals blame each other, and their patriotic emotions explode in an aggressive way . Even a much worse scenario is that the troubles caused by losing games affect the players directly. As far as I know, a couple of Korean players in Japan are suffered from invisible discrimination after the match between the two countries.

In conclusion, I think that international sporting occasions can be one of the good ways to ease tensions or to release patriotism safely. However, I believe that games can not be the fundamental way for sound patriotism or peaceful international relations.

  • Ease tension (phrase)  lessen or cause to lessen in tension
  • Secretive (adj.)  deliberately not telling people things
  • Ideology (n)  a set of ideas with a strong social influence
  • Patriotic (adj.)  feeling a lot of love, respect, and duty towards your country
  • Overflow (verb) to feel an emotion very strongly
  • Emotion explodes (collocation)  to express strong emotion in a sudden, noisy, and often violent way
  • In an aggressive way (phrase)  behaving in an angry or rude way that shows you want to fight, attack, or argue with someone
  • Scenario (n)  a situation that could possibly happen
  • Suffer from (v)  to experience something very unpleasant or painful
  • Invisible discrimination (phrase) unfair treatment of someone because of their religion, race, or other personal features that cannot be seen.

It is a common belief that international sports events and competitions have always proven themselves to be a connecting cord among different nations and fosters patriotism in the citizens of a country. I stand in support of that notion and in the paragraphs to follow, I shall reason that notion.

International sports such as Cricket World Cup or Football World Cup, so on and so forth, create an ambience that fortifies and strengthens the ties among different countries that otherwise could be at diplomatically contending sports. It is seen very often that the citizens of the two rival nations do not share a pleasant thought-spot for each other, in such a case whenever the sports teams of those countries have a face-off, the sportsmanship take the better of them and the tussle between them slowly assuages owing to the propagation of amicable relations among the players of the two hosting countries. Moreover, they come to terms with the situations of another contending country and the preponderant circumstances therein.

In addition to that, it is also very pervasive that many a time a feeling of nationalism and the citizens’ love for their respective countries suddenly see a vigour and surge in the intensity during such competitions. For instance, during Olympics the whole nation counts in harmony and synchronisation, the number of medals won by their players and hence, exult and jubilate together taking pride in their warriors. Moreover, it sets aside the paltry and trifling unnecessary strife prevalent in the countries otherwise and accentuates the patriotism that heightens more than ever.

Although, some could say such competitions may exacerbate an already fumbling relationship between the two countries, however, that shall be a lack of judiciousness and prudence, and it doesn’t require any specific event per se to pick up a grudge. However, that couldn’t fail a whole concept of international sports meet that plays a role in cementing good amiability, more commonly than not.

Conclusively, it could thus be stated that such competitions vitalize the feelings and true essence of love, nationalism, international-conviviality and affability.

Some people think that hosting international sports events is good for the country, while others believe it is a waste of money. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Table of Contents

Analyzing the Question

This question requires candidates to:

  • Discuss the advantages of hosting international sports events
  • Discuss the disadvantages or reasons why it might be considered a waste of money
  • Provide their own opinion on the matter

It’s crucial to address all parts of the question to achieve a high band score. Let’s look at sample essays for different band levels.

Sample Essay 1 (Band 8-9)

International sporting events, such as the Olympics or World Cup, often spark debates about their value to host nations. While some argue that these events bring significant benefits, others contend that they are an unnecessary financial burden. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own view.

Proponents of hosting international sports events argue that they offer numerous advantages to the host country. Firstly, such events can boost national pride and unity by bringing citizens together to support their country’s athletes and showcase their culture to the world. Additionally, these events often stimulate economic growth through increased tourism, job creation, and infrastructure development. For instance, the 2012 London Olympics led to the regeneration of East London and attracted millions of visitors, contributing significantly to the UK economy.

On the other hand, critics argue that hosting international sports events is a waste of money that could be better spent on more pressing needs. The enormous costs associated with building state-of-the-art stadiums and other facilities often outweigh the short-term economic benefits. Moreover, many of these structures fall into disuse after the event, becoming ‘white elephants’ that drain public resources. The 2014 World Cup in Brazil, for example, left behind several underutilized stadiums that now cost millions to maintain annually.

In my opinion, while hosting international sports events can indeed foster national pride and unity, the financial implications cannot be ignored. I believe that countries should carefully weigh the long-term costs and benefits before bidding to host such events. If a nation can afford the investment and has a clear plan for post-event use of facilities, then hosting can be beneficial. However, for countries with limited resources or more urgent social needs, it may be more prudent to invest in grassroots sports development rather than hosting large-scale international events.

In conclusion, the decision to host international sports events should be based on a thorough cost-benefit analysis, taking into account both the potential for fostering national pride and the long-term economic impact. While these events can unite a nation and showcase its capabilities to the world, they should not come at the expense of more critical social and economic priorities.

International sports events fostering national pride and unity

Sample Essay 2 (Band 6-7)

Hosting international sports events is a topic that many people have different opinions about. Some think it’s good for the country, while others believe it’s just wasting money. In this essay, I will discuss both sides and give my own thoughts.

People who support hosting international sports events say it brings many benefits. First, it can make the country famous and attract tourists. When a country hosts a big event like the World Cup or Olympics, people from all over the world watch it on TV and might want to visit. This can help the country’s economy by bringing in money from tourism. Also, these events can make people feel proud of their country and bring them together. For example, when Vietnam hosted the Southeast Asian Games, many Vietnamese people felt very happy and united.

However, other people think hosting these events is not a good idea. They say it costs too much money to build stadiums and other facilities. This money could be used for more important things like education or healthcare. Sometimes, after the event is over, the new buildings are not used much, which is a waste. For instance, some countries have built big stadiums for the World Cup that are now empty most of the time.

In my opinion, I think hosting international sports events can be good, but only if the country can afford it and has a plan for what to do with the facilities afterward. If a country doesn’t have enough money or has more important problems to solve, then maybe it’s better not to host these events. Instead, they could focus on developing sports at a smaller level in their country.

To conclude, hosting international sports events has both advantages and disadvantages. While it can bring pride and economic benefits, it also requires a lot of money. Countries should think carefully about their situation before deciding to host such events.

(310 words)

The role of sports in promoting national identity is evident in both essays, but the higher band essay provides more specific examples and demonstrates a more nuanced understanding of the topic.

Sample Essay 3 (Band 5-6)

Hosting international sports events is a big topic that people talk about a lot. Some people think it’s good for the country, but others say it’s just wasting money. I will talk about both sides in this essay.

People who like hosting sports events say it’s good because it makes the country look good. When a country has a big event like the World Cup, many people watch it on TV and see the country. This can make people want to visit the country. Also, it can make people in the country feel happy and proud. They can cheer for their country’s team together.

But some people think it’s not good to host these events. They say it costs too much money to build big stadiums and other things for the event. This money could be used for other important things like schools or hospitals. Sometimes, after the event is finished, the new buildings are not used much, which is not good.

I think hosting sports events can be good, but only if the country has enough money. If a country is poor or has other big problems, maybe it’s better not to host these events. They could use the money for other things that help people more.

In conclusion, hosting international sports events has good and bad points. Countries should think carefully before they decide to host one of these events.

Sample Essay 1

International sporting events are often viewed as platforms that foster global harmony, with some arguing they contribute significantly to peace and stability. While I agree that such events promote international cooperation, I believe their influence is limited in addressing deeper global conflicts. This essay will discuss how sporting events enhance cultural exchange and diplomacy but will also highlight their limitations in solving political and social issues.

Firstly, international sporting events serve as an excellent means of promoting cultural exchange and understanding among nations. Competitions like the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup bring together athletes and fans from different cultures, fostering a sense of unity and mutual respect. This interaction promotes tolerance, as people get exposed to diverse ways of life, reducing stereotypes and prejudices. For example, during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, fans from around the world gathered in Russia, sharing their cultures, languages, and traditions in a peaceful environment. Such events create an atmosphere where countries interact not only as competitors but also as collaborators, which contributes to building peaceful relationships at a grassroots level.

However, while these events can bridge cultural divides, they are not equipped to resolve deep-seated political or social conflicts. Major international sporting events often take place against the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions or human rights issues, but the temporary peace they bring rarely translates into long-term stability. For instance, the 2008 Beijing Olympics were held during a period of tension between China and several Western nations over human rights issues. Although the event showcased China's openness, it did little to resolve the underlying political disputes. This highlights the limitations of sports diplomacy, which is often symbolic rather than substantive in addressing real-world conflicts.

In conclusion, while international sporting events can foster cultural understanding and provide a platform for diplomacy, their impact on global peace and stability is limited. They create temporary goodwill but are not effective in addressing the root causes of global conflicts, which often require sustained political and diplomatic efforts.

Sample Essay 2

It is often argued that international sporting events play a crucial role in promoting global peace and stability. However, I strongly disagree with this notion. While these events may momentarily unite nations through competition, their effects are fleeting, and they fail to address the underlying causes of global instability. This essay will argue that such events often exacerbate political tensions and are frequently overshadowed by commercial interests, making them ineffective in fostering long-term peace.

One significant reason why international sporting events do not contribute to global peace is that they can intensify political tensions rather than alleviate them. Many sporting events are marred by boycotts, protests, and diplomatic disputes, revealing the fragility of international relations. For instance, the 1980 Moscow Olympics were boycotted by numerous countries, including the United States, due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. This boycott did nothing to resolve the conflict and, in fact, deepened the political divide between nations. Such instances demonstrate that sporting events, far from promoting peace, often become platforms for countries to showcase their disagreements and rivalries on a global stage.

Moreover, the commercialisation of international sports further detracts from any potential peace-building effects. Major events like the Olympics or the World Cup are driven by profit, with hosting countries investing billions in infrastructure and marketing rather than addressing pressing domestic or global issues. The focus on financial gain and international prestige often leads to corruption, exploitation, and neglect of social concerns. For example, Brazil’s 2014 World Cup saw significant public protests over government spending, as citizens felt the money could have been better utilised to tackle poverty and inequality. In such cases, the event not only fails to promote peace but also fuels domestic unrest, highlighting its inability to contribute to global stability.

In conclusion, while international sporting events may offer a brief respite from global tensions, they do not contribute meaningfully to peace and stability. Instead, they often highlight political conflicts and prioritise commercial interests over genuine diplomatic efforts, rendering them ineffective in fostering long-term global harmony.

Sample Essay 3

It is widely believed that international sporting events significantly contribute to fostering peace and global stability. I fully agree with this view, as such events create opportunities for diplomatic engagement and build bridges between diverse cultures. This essay will discuss how international sports enhance diplomatic relations and serve as a powerful tool for promoting cultural exchange and unity.

Firstly, international sporting events serve as a platform for diplomacy, encouraging nations to engage in peaceful dialogue even when formal channels remain closed. These events often compel countries with strained relations to cooperate, fostering positive diplomatic exchanges both on and off the field. For instance, the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea facilitated a rare diplomatic meeting between North and South Korea, allowing the two countries to set aside their long-standing political differences, albeit temporarily. The athletes marched under a unified flag, a symbolic gesture of reconciliation that eased tensions between the two nations. Such interactions provide a unique setting for countries to collaborate in a non-political atmosphere, reducing tensions and building goodwill in ways that traditional diplomacy often struggles to achieve. The shared enthusiasm for sport can transcend political rivalries, creating an environment where peaceful discussions can occur more naturally, offering the possibility of lasting diplomatic breakthroughs.

Secondly, these events promote cultural understanding and global unity by facilitating meaningful connections between people of diverse backgrounds. Sporting competitions such as the Olympics or the World Cup bring together individuals from different nations, promoting mutual respect and deepening appreciation for various cultural practices and values. Athletes and fans from all corners of the globe interact, exchange traditions, and celebrate diversity, effectively breaking down barriers of prejudice and misunderstanding that often fuel conflict. For example, during the 2012 London Olympics, the cultural showcase of each participating country allowed millions of viewers worldwide to experience and learn about other nations’ unique customs, values, and traditions. This celebration of global diversity fosters a sense of international camaraderie, helping to reshape public perceptions and strengthen bonds between countries and their citizens. Such deepened connections contribute to a more enduring and meaningful global peace, beyond the event’s immediate impact.

In conclusion, international sporting events play a crucial role in promoting global peace and stability by facilitating diplomatic engagement and fostering cultural exchange. By bringing people together in the spirit of friendly competition, these events encourage mutual respect and cooperation among nations, ultimately contributing to a more peaceful and interconnected world.

Band 9 sample essay about international sporting events

Home  »  IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS  »  Band 9 sample essay about international sporting events

Some people believe that international sporting events are the ideal opportunity to show the world the qualities of the hosting nation. Others believe that these events are mainly a large unjustifiable expense. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Global athletic events such as the Olympics, the World Cup, the Extreme Games, and even the American Super Bowl are incredible opportunities for countries. These iconic spectacles can provide a country with an economic avalanche of benefits or expose it to a public relations disaster. This essay will look at both points, using Russia and the United Kingdom as examples.

Firstly, it is important to bear in mind that simply hosting the event and having the world’s media attention cannot guarantee a positive promotion. This is because although the country is receiving enormous amounts of publicity, the media will often report controversial news as well as.

Take the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, for example. The media spotlight is shining bright on the athletes but also highlighting the polemic legislation regarding homosexuality. Therefore, despite the international recognition to be gained, the country can also face a possible backlash.

Secondly, the expense of building large infrastructures necessary to hold these events can dwarf the benefits, unless they are fully amortized afterwards. This is largely due to the fact that stadiums, Olympic parks, ski runs etc. are expensive to construct and undertake large capital expenditure, often by the public sector.

In the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002, the council commissioned a stadium for athletic events which was later adapted and sold to the local preeminent football club, Manchester City. Therefore with proper, fair, economic management of such buildings and facilities the cost can be recuperated.

To conclude, a host city or nation has a lot to gain from these events but only if they are economically administered correctly and the country has no controversial issues for the media to pull out of the closet.

Writing Task 2: Essay- Hosting International sports events (both the views)

Writing task 2 essay.

HOSTING INTERNATIONAL SPORTS EVENTS(BOTH THE VIEWS) You should spend 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: ‘Some people believe that hosting International sports events is highly beneficial, whereas others think it is create problems to the host country’ Discuss both the views. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Sample Answer

Nowadays, many countries are organising mega sports events to improve its economic growth. Some people favours the concept of hosting international sports event by a country, whereas, others believe it is just a waste of time and money. There are valid opinions to weigh both the sides of the discussion, which I will consider in the following paragraphs.

On one hand, it helps in providing an astounding improvement in the infrastructure of the city where the event is being organised. It also builds reputation and dignity of the host country all over the world. Then, it encourages tourism  and creates bright avenues of employment . Moreover, the host country also earns very high revenue by selling tickets of the event. Eventually, arranging international sports events boost the economy of the host country.

On the other hand, such mega events adversely affect daily life of the citizens. Government spends huge amount of money in building temporary infrastructure to provide basic amenities and security to the visitors. Moreover, government further recovers this amount from the residents of the country in the form of direct and indirect taxes.By any chance, if the event does not happen smoothly, it brings blemishes to the prestige of the host country.

Overall, I think, in recent years the people’s perception and attitudes have completely changed. Earlier sports industry was least preferred and underrated. But now, due to heavy investments and higher returns, it has become the most lucrative and desirable sector worldwide. Different communities worldwide have started giving respect and recognition to sports and the players as well. Therefore, in order to bring name and fame along with some financial benefits, hosting international events is profitable and acceptable.

→ Giả sử bạn đồng tình với quan điểm: “… people should have freedom to do any sport activity.”, như vậy, dàn ý cách viết Discussion Essay sẽ được triển khai như sau:

1. Introduction

  • There is an ongoing debate about whether governments should impose a ban on dangerous sports or allow people the freedom to engage in any sport activity they choose. (Giới thiệu chủ đề bằng cách Paraphrase).
  • While some advocate for the prohibition of perilous sports, I believe that individuals should have the freedom to participate in sports of their choice. (Đưa ra quan điểm cá nhân)

2. Body Paragraph

  • Supporters of banning dangerous sports have some reasons for their position. ( Câu chủ đề )
  • First, they argue that certain activities pose grave risks, leading to severe injuries or fatalities. Activities such as skydiving, car-racing, mountain climbing, or paragliding involve a high probability of accidents that can strain healthcare systems and families emotionally and financially. ( Luận điểm 1 )
  • Second, there is a valid concern that passionate fans might mimic these sports without proper safety measures, risking their lives and potentially causing accidents. For instance, individuals fascinated by car-racing might replicate risky behaviors on roads, surpassing speed limits, and causing accidents, putting themselves and others at risk. ( Luận điểm 2 )
  • However, I contend that people should have the liberty to engage in sports activities, provided they do not directly harm others. ( Câu chủ đề & Quan điểm cá nhân )
  • Initially, it is their personal autonomy to choose which sports to partake in. Hence, prohibiting someone from pursuing their passion seems unjustifiable, especially if they are fully aware of the associated risks. ( Luận điểm 1 )
  • Moreover, defining what constitutes a “dangerous sport” is not always clear. Every sport inherently involves some level of risk, including seemingly common sports like football. Imposing an outright ban on specific sports might seem arbitrary and unfair, especially when risks are subjective and can differ among individuals. ( Luận điểm 2 )

3. Conclusion

  • In conclusion,
  • While there are valid concerns regarding the dangers associated with certain sports, I believe that individuals should have the autonomy to engage in activities of their preference as long as their actions do not post direct harm to others. ( Khẳng định lại quan điểm cá nhân ).

Cách viết Discuss essay dạng both sides and give your opinion

Ví dụ đề bài “Discuss both sides and give your opinion”

*Hướng dẫn cách làm Discussion Essay dạng “both sides”:

  • Good physical well-being is considered a fundamental human necessity, so it is suggested that healthcare services should not be run by non-governmental companies. ( Giới thiệu chủ đề bằng cách Paraphrase ).
  • While there are notable advantages to private healthcare, I contend that the disadvantages seem to outweigh these benefits. ( Đưa ra quan điểm cá nhân )
  • On the one hand, the non-public healthcare system renders several favorable implications. ( Câu chủ đề )
  • Firstly, private healthcare is often associated with higher levels of innovation and efficiency. The profit-driven nature of these institutions encourages the development of cutting-edge treatments and technologies. ( Luận điểm 1 )
  • Second, private healthcare facilities tend to go the extra mile in terms of patient comfort and experience. This includes amenities like private rooms, personalized care plans, reduced waiting times and complementary therapies. These additional services can significantly enhance the overall patient experience. ( Luận điểm 2 )
  • However, I believe that the downsides of the non-state healthcare system eclipse the above-mentioned benefits. ( Câu chủ đề & Quan điểm cá nhân )
  • The most prominent drawback of private healthcare is the significant cost associated with it. High premiums, out-of-pocket expenses, and the overall expense of treatments can be prohibitive for a large section of the population. This exacerbates existing healthcare disparities as those with higher incomes receive superior care compared to those with limited resources. ( Luận điểm 1 )
  • Moreover, profit-making companies may sometimes prioritize financial gains over the well-being of patients. This can lead to situations where unnecessary procedures or treatments are recommended, solely for financial gain. This profit-oriented approach can potentially compromise the ethical standards of healthcare. ( Luận điểm 2 )
  • While private healthcare brings commendable advantages in terms of innovation and additional services, I opine that its drawbacks are substantial. The formidable cost barriers and the potential for profit-driven motives to override patient welfare are significant concerns. ( Khẳng định lại quan điểm cá nhân ).

Đề bài 1: (Cam 11 Test 4 Writing Task 2)

  • Dạng câu hỏi: Discuss both views (Discussion Essay)
  • Bài viết tham khảo:

“People hold different views about which progress is important to a country. Some enunciate the idea that economic growth is the ultimate goal of every government, I agree with the idea that other measures of progress, including happiness and environmental sustainability , are as crucial.

On the one hand, boosting the economy is a vital aim that all countries wish to achieve. Firstly, a healthy economy is a prerequisite for the government to enhance life quality, for they have money to upgrade public facilities and provide better public services. For instance, only when the economy creates enough profit and then contributes to the state budget via tax can the medical service can be provided free of charge to all citizens, thus ensuring better health. Secondly, a strong economy also increases the status of a nation on the global stage. In other words, a prosperous country will have political influences on others, demonstrated by the power of America now.

On the other hand, I would argue that other equally significant factors should be taken into consideration. The first measurement is well-being since richness does not always mean happiness and good health. A telling example is Japan, which is also one of the giants in the global economy, but citizens often face stress because of excessive workload. The second consideration is environmental protection because the growth of the economy normally goes with the booming of manufacturing plants, the natural resources exploitation, and the increasing production of waste. Without environmental conservation, severe contamination is inevitable , leading to health deterioration and other more serious consequences.

In conclusion, economic development is indeed the key marker of a country’s success, but other criteria, which are well-being and environmental protection, are equally vital.”

“International cooperation has become increasingly important in today’s interconnected world. Some argue that the primary advantage of such collaboration lies in protecting the environment, while others believe that the main focus should be on global business . Both perspectives offer valid points, and I think a balanced view is necessary to understand the significance of each.

On the one hand, proponents of environmental protection emphasize the global nature of environmental challenges. Issues like climate change, deforestation, and ocean pollution affect every country and require a collective response . International cooperation allows nations to pool resources, share expertise, and implement global policies that can significantly mitigate environmental damage . For example, the Paris Agreement brought together nearly every country to combat climate change, setting binding targets for reducing carbon emissions. Without such cooperation, individual efforts would likely be insufficient to address these large-scale problems.

On the other hand, advocates for focusing on global business argue that economic cooperation drives innovation, creates jobs, and lifts people out of poverty . International trade agreements , such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), foster economic growth by reducing tariffs and encouraging the free flow of goods and services. This, in turn, can lead to technological advancements that benefit multiple sectors, including the environment. For instance, the rise of renewable energy technologies like wind and solar power has been accelerated by global business partnerships and investment.

In conclusion, I believe that both environmental protection and global business are equally important in international cooperation. In fact, sustainable business practices and environmentally conscious economic policies can ensure that both priorities are met.”

  • Dạng câu hỏi: Discuss both sides (Discussion Essay)

“The phenomenon of uniformity in shops and products across many countries is a topic of considerable debate. Some view this trend positively while others criticize it. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own viewpoint.

On the one hand, the standardization of shops and products offers numerous advantages. Primarily, it ensures a consistent shopping experience regardless of location. For example, a customer can expect the same quality and range of products when visiting a well-known retail chain in Tokyo or New York. This predictability can be particularly reassuring for travelers and expatriates , who may prefer familiar brands and services in an unfamiliar environment. Moreover, standardized products often come with economies of scale, which can lead to lower prices for consumers. Large multinational companies can afford to reduce costs through mass production and bulk purchasing , passing on the savings to customers. This is evident in the widespread availability of affordable electronics, clothing, and household items from global brands.

Conversely, I opine that the proliferation of identical shops and products worldwide can have several negative implications. A significant concern is the loss of cultural identity and uniqueness. Local businesses, which often offer unique and culturally significant products, struggle to compete with large multinational corporations . For instance, the global dominance of fast-food chains has overshadowed local eateries in many cities, diminishing the variety of culinary experiences available to residents and visitors alike. Furthermore, the emphasis on uniformity can stifle creativity and innovation. Local entrepreneurs who bring diverse and innovative products to the market may find it difficult to survive against established global brands. This can lead to a reduction in the variety of products available and limit consumers’ choices to a few dominant brands.

In conclusion, from my vantage point, the global uniformity of shops and products has both positive and negative aspects. While it provides consistency and affordability, it also risks undermining local cultures and reducing diversity.”

uniformity (n): tính giống nhau, tính đồng dạng Giải thích: the quality or fact of being the same, or of not changing or being different in any way Ví dụ: We do not seek to impose total uniformity on every single decision that is made.

shopping experience (n): trải nghiệm mua sắm Giải thích: the experience of purchasing goods or services from stores or online platforms Ví dụ: I enjoyed my shopping experience at the mall, browsing through various shops and trying on different clothes.

predictability (n): tính có thể nói trước; tính có thể đoán trước, tính có thể dự đoán Giải thích: the state of knowing what something is like, when something will happen, etc Ví dụ: Although her job is boring and monotonous, she likes the sense of predictability and security that it gives her.

expatriate (n): người cách xa quê hương Giải thích: someone who does not live in their own country Ví dụ: A large community of expatriates has settled there.

bulk purchasing (n): sự mua hàng số lượng lớn Giải thích: purchasing goods in large quantities at a discounted rate Ví dụ: The restaurant owner saved money by bulk purchasing ingredients like rice and vegetables from wholesalers.

proliferation (n): sự phổ biến Giải thích: the fact of something increasing a lot and suddenly in number or amount Ví dụ: The past two years have seen the proliferation of TV channels.

cultural identity (n): bản sắc văn hoá Giải thích: the sense of belonging and identification with a particular cultural group or community Ví dụ: Growing up in a multicultural neighborhood, Sarah embraced her cultural identity by celebrating both Diwali and Christmas with her friends.

multinational corporation (n): tập đoàn đa quốc gia Giải thích: large companies that operate in multiple countries, often with headquarters in one country and subsidiaries in others Ví dụ: Coca-Cola is a prime example of a multinational corporation, with operations and sales in over 200 countries worldwide.

local eatery (n): quán ăn địa phương Giải thích: small restaurants or food establishments that serve local cuisine, often characterized by their authentic flavors and affordable prices Ví dụ: In Hanoi, you can find delicious pho and banh mi at local eateries tucked away in narrow alleys.

culinary experience (n): trải nghiệm ẩm thực Giải thích: the enjoyment and exploration of different cuisines and culinary traditions Ví dụ: My trip to Italy was a culinary experience, where I indulged in authentic pizza and pasta dishes prepared by skilled chefs.

ielts essay on international sports

Over the past fifty years, international sports events such as the Olympic Games and world cup competitions have played an increasingly important role in our society. However, many people think such events are an enormous waste of money, time and effort. How far do you agree with this view?

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:
