Show Your Uniqueness: The Resume And Cover Letter Screening

Your resume , with a cover letter , is the first step to a very lucrative job at Oliver Wyman.

Yet, less than 30% of applicants receive a call for an interview.

So, what is Oliver Wyman looking for when screening your resume and cover letter?

First, Oliver Wyman Is Looking For Academic Performance

Oliver Wyman recruits from the best schools worldwide.

For instance, top colleges with good placement at Oliver Wyman include Cambridge, Oxford, HEC Paris, Harvard University, London Business School, INSEAD, or Wharton Business School (source: LinkedIn ).

Oliver Wyman - Academic excellence

Those skills include your capacity to break down problems logically, prioritize the most important components of a problem, analyze data, connect different sources of information to derive conclusions, etc.

And if you want to develop those skills to ace your case interviews, I’ve created a full (and free) course here .

The 4Cs of case interviews

Furthermore, Oliver Wyman is looking for people with certain characteristics .

Because if you possess these characteristics, Oliver Wyman knows that you’ll fit their culture and potentially become a top consultant.

Oliver Wyman values

Therefore, all your resume and cover letter content should demonstrate that you have mastered these skills and characteristics .

To be more precise, your resume and cover letter content must show how you used these skills and the IMPACT you had .

Lastly, Oliver Wyman Wants To Understand Your Motivation To Join Them

Oliver Wyman wants to understand your motivation to join them: Are you genuinely interested in joining Oliver Wyman over McKinsey, BCG, or Bain?

Thus, your cover letter must show that you have researched the firm, talked to its consultants, and have persuasive and tailored arguments for why Oliver Wyman is your first choice.

Don't Stress Out: The HR Screening Interview

In most cases, the HR screening interview is conducted by phone and is aimed at briefly reviewing your background.

For instance, the HR screening interview can include a list of questions such as :

Background questions : for example, “Tell me about yourself” or “Describe your work history.”

Motivational questions : “Why are you interested in consulting?” and “Why Oliver Wyman”?

Specific skill-based questions : for example, “Tell me about a time when you had to solve a problem in a team”

For this stage, you can expect a 20-minute interview.

Note : more on how to answer those questions later in this guide.

Show Your Logical Reasoning and Personality: The Oliver Wyman Aptitude Tests

Oliver Wyman can ask you to take a test during the screening phase.

This aptitude test can be one of these two tests (depending on the office you’re applying to):

  • A psychometric test (mainly used in European offices)
  • Or a GMAT-like test that includes both numerical and verbal reasoning questions

Oliver Wyman Numerical Test

As a Business Analyst at Oliver Wyman, you will spend much time reading and analyzing data (from a graphical chart or an Excel spreadsheet).

Besides, you will have to derive insights from these data and connect these insights to your client’s problem.

The Oliver Wyman Recruitment Test assesses your ability to complete these tasks well.

In other words, the Oliver Wyman Recruitment Test assesses your ability to do the job: if you do well on the test, it indicates that you will perform well as an Analyst.

Indeed, this test has been designed to assess how you use deductive, inductive, and quantitative reasoning abilities to solve problems logically.

You’ll have to answer 40 multiple-choice GMAT-like questions in 60 minutes.

The multiple choice test is divided into three parts that assess your quantitative and verbal reasoning.

You are not allowed to use a calculator during the test.

In addition to facing challenging questions, candidates are typically under a lot of time pressure

Oliver Wyman Psychometric Test (or Oliver Wyman Koru Test)

If you must take the psychometric test (also known as the Oliver Wyman Koru test ), you’ll have to answer psychometric questions that predict how you behave when facing certain situations.

Also, you might have to rank some statements that best describe yourself.

And your answers help Oliver Wyman understand if you are a good fit.

This is similar to the BCG’s psychometric test.

Do NOT Neglect It: The Personal Experience Interview (PEI)

After the screening process, there is a selection process consisting of multiple interviews.

First and foremost, I want to point out a mistake made by too many candidates:

Do NOT neglect your preparation for this part of the interview.

Indeed, the PEI counts for 50% of your assessment. In other words, candidates often fail to secure an offer after falling flat on the PEI – even with perfect case-cracking skills.

What To Expect During The PEI

During each of your Personal Experience Interviews, you can expect the four following types of questions :

First, “ Tell me about yourself ” or “Walk me through your resume.”

Then, “ Why Consulting? “.

Thirdly, “ Why Oliver Wyman? “.

Finally, between one and five behavioral interview questions .

You can expect the PEI (or fit interview) to last between 20 and 40 minutes.

Now, let’s go through these 4 types of questions.

Tell Me About Yourself

As I write in Tell Me About Yourself: How to Answer This Question , you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

This question, or common variants such as “Walk me through your resume,” is an easy and open-ended start to a conversation where your interviewer wants to know the following:

  • What are your motivations, and what drives you?
  • Which problems you had to solve, and how you solved them ?
  • What is your academic background?
  • How do you deal with people ?
  • What impact have you had in the past?

Why Consulting?

A natural question following “Tell me about yourself” is “ Why consulting? ” .

Because the second most important thing that Oliver Wyman wants to know after who you are is:

  • if you understand what Consulting is,
  • and if you are truly interested in pursuing a career in that industry .

Why’s that?

Because Oliver Wyman doesn’t want you to leave after six months after you realize that the consulting lifestyle doesn’t fit your objectives.

So, whether Consulting is a thoughtful career choice or an “I don’t know what to do, let’s try” career choice, there are many good reasons why Consulting can be a good opportunity.

7 Reasons Why Consulting Can Be A Good Career Opportunity

  • #1 - It's a good career choice after University if you don't know what to do : if you don't know what to do after University or after your MBA (you're not alone!), then Consulting is a safe bet. You'll have the opportunity to explore which career, sector or specialty is right for you
  • #2 - You'll have a strong impact : you'll have the opportunity to work on and solve the most pressing problems faced by big corporations
  • #3 - You'll have a strong exposure to C-level Executives : early on in your career, you'll work directly for CEOs, CFOs, CMOs, etc. and start developing the soft skills to become a senior Executive later
  • #4 - You'll learn a lot : Consulting firms invest a lot in training their consultants. In addition, the feedback culture is very strong and you'll get full performance reviews regularly
  • #5 - You'll work with bright people : consultancies pride themselves on hiring bright and interesting people. Plus, with 3-month projects on average, you'll meet a lot of different people in consulting
  • #6 - You'll have the opportunity to work in an international environment : large consultancies sell work to businesses and governments all around the world
  • #7 - You'll have access to an amazing alumni network : having worked in a consulting firm will give you access to its alumni network that will help you throughout your career

2 Other Reasons Why Consulting Can Be A Good Career Opportunity (But You Can't Tell Them To Your Interviewer)

  • #8 - You'll have great exit opportunities : headhunting firms or big corporations love ex-consultants. Even now, 5 years after I left Consulting, head hunters still contact me on Linkedin to point out interesting opportunities
  • #9 - You'll earn a lot of money : consulting is also known as a very well-paid industry. The average base salary for a McKinsey Associate is $127,000 a year according to Glassdoor. Plus, your salary will increase between 10% and 25% each year

Besides listing a couple of reasons why you want to pursue a career in consulting, a compelling answer should explain WHY these reasons are important for you .

Check this article to learn how to craft a compelling answer to the “Why consulting?” question.

Why Oliver Wyman?

Next, “Why Oliver Wyman?” : This question evaluates your motivation to join Oliver Wyman.

I have explained in this article how to have a compelling answer to this question.

Behavioral Interview Questions

Next, your interviewer will ask you between 1 and 5  behavioral interview questions .

For instance:

  • Describe a challenging situation when you have had to work hard to achieve something, in a limited time, outside your comfort zone
  • Tell me about a time when you have had to work with someone with an opposing opinion
  • Share an example where you effectively worked with people with different backgrounds
  • Revisit a time when you experienced significant change or encountered an ambiguous situation and share the actions you took to adapt to the new circumstances
  • Discuss a hypothetical client scenario to help us understand how you structure tough, ambiguous challenges, identify important issues, deal with the implications of facts and data, formulate conclusions and recommendations, and articulate your thoughts

Be Exceptionally Structured: The Case Interview

The case interview is another problem-solving test.

Oliver Wyman believes the best way to assess your problem-solving skills is to discuss a real client scenario with you .

This helps them understand how you structure tough, ambiguous business challenges, identify important issues, deal with all the implications of facts and data, formulate conclusions and recommendations, and articulate your thoughts in a fast-moving discussion

For instance, watch the following video with a candidate solving a market sizing question :

Interviewer Led vs. Candidate Led

The Oliver Wyman case interview follows the candidate-led case study interview format .

What does that mean?

First, your interviewer will present a problem.

Then, you must ask clarifying questions to define clearly the problem.

Next, you must structure an approach to solve this problem.

And you, the candidate, take the reins, guiding the interviewer through your approach.

It’s your stage, and interviewers are more spectators.

Finally, your interviewer will ask you a set of pre-determined questions, regardless of what your initial structure is.

For instance, here are the types of questions you can have:

  • Problem structuring – organize the problem into an issue tree
  • Trend analysis – review a graph and synthesize information relevant to the client
  • Quantitative analysis – solve a simple mathematical calculation without a calculator and synthesize the results for the client
  • Synthesis – the partner or client CEO is in the elevator with you. What do you recommend they do?

See each of these questions like a “mini” case:

You will have to understand the problem, develop a mini structure, ask for additional data (if necessary), and come to a conclusion that answers the question.

Good examples of interviewer-led cases can be found on the Oliver Wyman website :

  • Wumbleworld

Furthermore, you can read my case interview guide .

The internet holds hundreds of example cases. I recently shared a list of 250+ practice cases .

You’re Almost Done: Ask the Interviewer Great Questions

You’ve made it through the behavioral and case study portions.

Now, the interviewer asks if you have any questions .

Oliver Wyman is genuinely interested in your questions . Interviewers want to know you are passionate about consulting and working at Oliver Wyman.

Here are some ideas for great questions:

  • Make a connection with your interviewer . Ask questions about their background and their current work that interest you
  • Explore the culture of the office at which you are interviewing
  • Clarify the structure of the office, Oliver Wyman, or client engagements

You can read this article to build your list of smart questions to ask at the end of your interviews.

The Infamous Blacklist: Does It Exist? And How to Overcome It

The jury is out on if there is a Oliver Wyman blacklist.

Here’s what I do know: only apply if you are ready to interview .

Management consulting is a destination job for university programs and experienced hires.

Competition is strong .

For instance, if you do not pass the interviews, consulting firms will request you wait 12-18 months until you reapply .

Even then, Oliver Wyman may want to see a significant career change as evidence that your skills have improved to pass another set of interviews, such as through a graduate degree, significant promotion, or work at a top-tier company.

Don’t dwell on the question of the blacklist, but remember, competition is tough. Be confident before you interview.

Offered an interview but not feeling ready? I can help you prepare in as little as 4 weeks .

Oliver Wyman Case Interview: Ultimate Guide (2024)

Oliver Wyman case interview

Oliver Wyman interviews are tough. They're also different than what you'd encounter at a typical corporate firm. To evaluate candidates, Oliver Wyman uses a combination of case interviews, "conversational interviews", and case presentations.

This may sound overwhelming, but don't worry. This guide can help you conquer your Oliver Wyman interviews and maximise your chances of getting a job offer.

Our team has first-hand experience with the Oliver Wyman interview process and has helped thousands of candidates land jobs as consultants at top firms. So, let's review everything you need to know to land an offer from Oliver Wyman.

Here's what we'll cover:

  • Oliver Wyman overview
  • Oliver Wyman interview process
  • Oliver Wyman case interview
  • Oliver Wyman behavioral interview
  • Oliver Wyman case presentation
  • How to prep for your Oliver Wyman interview

Practise case interviews 1-to-1 with Oliver Wyman ex-interviewers

1. oliver wyman overview.

Oliver Wyman was originally formed in 1984, by Alex Oliver and Bill Wyman, who had both been partners at Booz Allen Hamilton (now Strategy& ). In 2003 it was bought by Marsh McLennan , a huge professional services firm specialising in "risk, strategy and people" and which also has a few other consulting subsidiaries

To understand Oliver Wyman consulting, and how it operates today, it helps to know the company's internal structure. Oliver Wyman is organised into 3 business verticals, which are as follows:

  • Financial Services  is the firm's largest focus, and their consulting specialty.
  • Consumer, Industrial, and Services  is essentially OW's "catch all" for consulting in sectors outside of financial services.
  • Health and Life Sciences  is very small compared to the other verticals, and focuses on consulting with clients in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, etc.

It's also worth mentioning OW Labs, which is one of Oliver Wyman's internal practices. OW Labs is the firm's digital technology division, and is one of their fastest growing businesses.

If you're interested in working for Oliver Wyman, then it's important to identify the specific area where you'd like to work. Being able to articulate your interests and future goals will contribute to your success in the application and interviews.

In the remaining sections below, we'll go into greater detail on each stage of the interview process at Oliver Wyman, and the steps you can take to get prepared.

2. Oliver Wyman interview process overview

Oliver Wyman has 3 steps in their application process.

  • Resume and   cover letter   screening
  • First round interviews
  • Second round interviews (Super Day or Assessment Centre)

These steps outline the typical process. However, for consulting jobs the steps for interviews can vary based on location and role. It can be really helpful to ask your HR contact if they can provide more details on the specific steps for your interview track.

Note: In the past, Oliver Wyman used online assessment tests, but these are no longer part of the typical consultant interview process.

Let's take a closer look at each stage.

2.1 Resume and cover letter screening

First, recruiters will look at your resume and assess if your experience matches the open position. This is the most competitive step in the process—we’ve found that 90% of candidates don’t make it past this stage.

You can use  this free resume guide  and this  free cover letter guide  to help tailor your application to the position you’re targeting.

And if you’re looking for expert feedback, you can also get input from our  team of  ex-MBB recruiters , who will  cover what achievements to focus on (or ignore), how to fine tune your bullet points, and more.

2.2 First-round interviews

Your interviewers at Oliver Wyman will consist of a mix of associates, senior consultants, engagement managers and partners. First round interviews may be done in person or via video or phone call. They usually consist of:

  • One behavioural interview (30 mins)
  • One case interview (30mins)

You can expect the behavioral questions to consist of fairly typical resume and motivation questions. The case interview question often takes the form of a market sizing question, though not always.

Don't worry, we'll look at how to prepare for both behavioural and case questions in section 3.

2.3 Second-round interviews

If you make it to the second round, you'll usually be called in to an Oliver Wyman office for a day of interviewing (though some locations are still keeping things remote). This round of interviews with an onsite visit is sometimes called a "Super Day" or "Assessment Centre".

In your second-round interviews you can expect:

  • One or two case interviews (30-45mins)
  • One behavioural / fit interview (30-45mins)
  • One case presentation (30-45mins)

As we mentioned, there is some variance in this, depending on the office you're interviewing for. Not all candidates get a case presentation, for example.

In this round the behavioral interview, which Oliver Wyman calls a "conversational interview", usually focuses on your past experience to assess whether you demonstrate key traits. We'll go into more detail on behavioral questions in section 5.

Now you've seen an overview of the Oliver Wyman interview process, let's dive into each type of interview in more detail.

3. Oliver Wyman case interviews

As you've seen, case interviews will be the central focus of your Oliver Wyman interview process. Case interviews at Oliver Wyman are candidate-led, which is the same style used in a  BCG or a  Bain case interview . This is different to firms like McKinsey or Capital One who use interviewer-led cases.

For a candidate-led case interview, there are 7 types of questions you need to prepare for:

  • Framework development
  • Framework exploration
  • Quant question – Data provided
  • Quant question – No data provided
  • Creativity question
  • Recommendation

You can learn more about case interview questions, by reading our free case interview guide. Another great way to prepare, is by practicing with realistic cases. Oliver Wyman actually provides two samples on their website, that you can use to practice. You can find them at the links below:

  • Wumbleworld (Oliver Wyman practice case)
  • Aqualine (Oliver Wyman practice case)

3.1 Market sizing questions

As well as these business situation type case problems, Oliver Wyman often asks market sizing questions, especially in the first-round. Let's take a quick look at a few examples that candidates have shared on Glassdoor.

Example Oliver Wyman market sizing questions:

  • Size the market for gym memberships in Europe
  • Size the market for rice in UK
  • How many golf balls are sold in the US each day?
  • Estimate demand for a new route for an airline company
  • How many ATMs are needed for a remote island in Greece?

We recommend you read our market sizing article to make sure you're ready to approach these questions.

4. Behavioural interviews

Oliver Wyman does behavioural interviews a little differently than other top consulting firms like McKinsey. In McKinsey's behavioural interviews , the interviewer chooses a topic, and then they will evaluate you on only that one topic. Oliver Wyman's behavioural interviews are much broader. They call them " conversational interviews ", and they cover a mix of resume, fit and PEI questions.

" You can expect to hold a conversation with your interviewer about your accomplishments, experiences, interests and career objectives. This is also a good opportunity to ask questions about Oliver Wyman ." ( Source: Oliver Wyman)

Oliver Wyman behavioural questions can be divided into two categories:

  • Resume questions: Generic questions such as " Walk me through your resume " and "Tell me more about your time at X".  Expect these in the first-round.
  • Fit questions. These are generic questions such as “ Why consulting? ” or “ Why OW? ”.
  • Personal Experience Interview (PEI) questions. These are questions such as “Tell me about a time when you led a team through a difficult situation.” Or “Tell me about a time where you had to manage a team conflict”

Here are the top 5 fit and PEI questions you should prepare for at Oliver Wyman.

Top 5 fit questions:

  • Why Oliver Wyman?
  • Why consulting?
  • Why not MBB?
  • Tell me about something not on your resume
  • Tell me about your greatest accomplishment

Top 5 PEI questions. Tell me about a time when ...

  • You led a team through a difficult situation
  • You worked in a team and had to manage a conflict
  • You had a disagreement with a colleague / boss
  • You had to change someone's / a group's mind
  • You overcame a really difficult challenge

Don't fall into the trap of under-preparing for these types of questions. While they may seem easier than the case interviews, they are extremely important to get right.

You’ll need to prepare several ”stories” or “examples” from your personal and professional experience to demonstrate that you have the traits that Oliver Wyman is looking for.

To learn more, check out our guide to consulting fit / PEI questions .

5. Oliver Wyman case presentation

The final type of interview used by Oliver Wyman is a case presentation.

Here's a quick overview of what to expect:

  • Receive the case information (e.g. business scenario, questions, data)
  • You'll have 30 minutes to analyse the materials and prepare a presentation
  • Then you'll spend 30 minutes presenting and answering interviewer questions

A case presentation is MUCH different than a normal case interview , and you'll need to specifically prepare for the presentation format. In order to prepare, we recommend you study our in-depth written case interview guide .

That guide is written with BCG and Bain in mind, and there are some differences for an OW case presentation. For example, written case presentations at BCG and Bain are significantly longer in duration. However, the tips and preparation plan in sections 2 and 3 are a great resource for your OW prep.

As you prepare, it will also be helpful to know that your interviewers may stop you to ask questions during your presentation. It may sound unusual, or even rude, to be interrupted during your presentation. However, as a consultant, you will need to be prepared to answer client questions that arise while you are presenting, and your OW interviewers may want to test how you would respond.

6. How to prepare for Oliver Wyman case interviews

Now that you know what to expect in Oliver Wyman interviews, let's discuss the steps you should take to prepare.

6.1 Learn the case interview essentials

The best starting point for your case interview prep is our case interview prep guide . It'll take you through all the different types of questions you may be asked in your case interview, show you how to draw from different frameworks to structure your answer, and give you example cases to practise with.

6.2 Become really confident at maths

You don't have to have a perfect GPA or GMAT score to succeed at case interview maths. However, during your Oliver Wyman interview, you will be expected to quickly perform accurate mental maths.

With some time and intentional effort, you can develop impressive maths skills, and learn to confidently solve questions with a structured approach. In our experience, the most successful applicants begin their interview preparation by practicing maths skills.

If you want to learn more about the type of maths problems used in Oliver Wyman case interviews, check out our free guide to case interview maths.

6.3 Research the company

Researching the company's values is a crucial first step in any interview preparation. Oliver Wyman put a lot of emphasis on whether the candidate will contribute to the positive working environment the firm seeks to create. Unusually for top consulting firms, on their careers pages qualities such as "fun" and "humour" are given importance and you should try and present yourself who will thrive in that kind of environment.

You should also make sure you're up to date in the latest developments in the area of the Oliver Wyman that you're applying to join. Here are some useful links to get you started:

  • Oliver Wyman insights
  • Oliver Wyman values and culture
  • Oliver Wyman news on Consultancy.uk

In addition, do some networking so that you can show you've made the effort to reach out to current staff.

6.4 Do mock interviews

How you solve each case is important, but your interviewers will also be evaluating how you COMMUNICATE your answers. It's important to speak in a structured way that makes it easy to clearly understand your points.

The best way to hone your communication skills is to practise interviewing out loud, and you can do that in three main ways:

  • Interview yourself (out loud)
  • Practise interviewing with friends or family
  • Practise interviewing with ex-interviewers

To help you with this process, here is a  broad  list   of consulting interview questions  you can practice with.  Practising by yourself is a great way to get started, and can help you get more comfortable with the flow of a case interview. However, this type of practice won’t prepare you for realistic interview conditions.

After getting some practice on your own, you should find someone who can do a mock interview with you, like a friend or family member.

We’d also recommend that you practise 1-1 with ex-interviewers from Oliver Wyman . This is the best way to replicate the conditions of a real case interview, and to get feedback from someone who understands the process extremely well. Meet our Oliver Wyman ex-interviewers who’d love to work with you.

Create the Perfect Consulting Cover Letter & Free Template

Thousands of graduates apply for consulting jobs every year and 99% of consulting firms require a cover letter with each application. That’s a lot of cover letters. Amongst the pile of applications, any mediocre cover letters will likely result in the entire application being dismissed . With thousands of applications to consider, screeners will use any mistakes or flaws to justify the rejection of a candidate. Getting your cover letter and resume right is possibly the most important part of the application process.

As your cover letter sits alongside your CV it cannot simply repeat the same information and it cannot be a generic cover letter that you have used for other applications. Each cover letter takes time to write and needs to be unique, concise, and attention-grabbing. Without sufficient care and diligence, it is unlikely you will make it to the next stage of the  case interview process.

  • What Is a Cover Letter?

The cover letter introduces your application as a whole and should not be confused with a personal statement/summary on a CV. Your cover letter complements your CV but does not repeat it by briefly highlighting your relevant skills and experience as well as communicating your desire to pursue a career in consulting . It should also explain why you want to join the consulting firm you are applying for, it could be the work they do, the reputation they have, or the approach they take.

Cover letters are traditionally a letter, and therefore follow a letter format. It should contain both your address and the firm's office address. It should be short and not delve into too much detail but leave the reader wanting to learn more by continuing to read your application .

  • Why Is a Cover Letter Important?

Top firms will receive thousands of candidates and they simply cannot all be put forward for interview. Interviewing candidates is an expensive process for the firm and therefore reducing the candidate pool to roughly a tenth of the size is paramount. The cover letter is in fact a quicker way to qualify candidates than a CV/resume, this is because it is quicker to make a judgment on three critical factors:

  • Understanding

Without the potential to develop into a top consultant it is not worth the hiring company investing time and money into training you. Potential can be shown through skills and experiences with a particular focus on the balance of IQ and EQ. Are you a natural problem solver with an analytical skillset that is also able to build relationships with clients? Most people can show evidence of all of these things but not all of them do.

Applicants that do not clearly understand what consulting is and the work it involves will be quickly rejected. Candidates that have applied to consulting without this understanding may find it neither rewarding nor interesting; firms want to hire graduates that will repay the investment they make in them, not graduates that are likely to be difficult in the workplace and ultimately leave after a short period of time. Bad hires are expensive .

Desire is where the letter needs to be the most unique, of course, employers are aware that you will apply to more than one firm but what is it about this firm in particular that you like. It could be their focus on delivering results for their clients, or perhaps the chance to work with incredibly smart people or a particular project they did that caught your eye. Everyone likes to feel special and hiring companies are no different.

  • 5 Tips For Consulting Cover Letters

In order to make sure you hit all of the criteria required to keep the reviewer interested in your application we have put together five tips that will cover all bases:

Feedback & proofread

  • 1) Make It Unique

As being generic is hurtful to your chances of proceeding further you can easily ensure that you make it unique to the company to which you are applying by visiting their company website and visiting the ‘About us’ or ‘Company values’ page. If you can state what it is specifically about that company that you like then you will tick the unique box . An example using this approach for Oliver Wyman is shown below:

Website statement:

We value exceptional people - people with intelligence, energy, passion, emotional sensitivity, and a commitment to excellence. We refuse to compromise by hiring those who do not meet our high standards. We believe that if we have common aspirations, a non-hierarchical environment based on respect, and no artificial barriers to advancement, then exceptional people will realize their potential.

Cover letter line:

“The focus on exceptional people and a non-hierarchical environment at Oliver Wyman resonates with me greatly as I enjoy working alongside and learning from talented people.”

  • 2) One Page

Given how important it is to write a stand-out cover letter, it would be easy to spill over onto a second page to tell the screener how much you want it and why you are the perfect candidate. Please don’t. At the top of this page, we mentioned that your application will sit alongside thousands of other applicants and that pile will be reviewed by 5-10 current employees. That means that each screener has the laborious task of reading hundreds of cover letters in one sitting .

Having a cover letter that is more than one page means you are asking for more of the screener's time than everyone else, which in itself can result in a rejection. Consultants are concise and you should be able to keep your cover letter to one page .

  • 3) Be Bold

As the person reading your cover letter will be doing it quickly, being bold is a way to grab their attention . It doesn’t come naturally to most of us but the reader doesn’t know you and the context of your achievements so you need to convey your brilliance with punchy statements . If you finished top of your class then state that, if you contributed to a record month during some prior work experience then don’t downplay your involvement.

Being bold shouldn’t be confused with lying. Yes, you want to grab their attention but if it later transpires that you had no involvement whatsoever with that record month or other achievements then your dishonesty will ruin all of your hard work.

  • 4) Name Drop

When researching consulting applications there is often reference made to networking . For graduates, this falls into two categories, events and personalities. The aim of networking is to meet people currently working at the company you are looking to apply to. This allows you to find out what it is really like to work there, gain an understanding of the type of work they do, and ask any questions you would like to know the answer to.

Events-based networking is when the firm you wish to apply for is at a university careers fair or is hosting a recruitment event themselves and there are current employees in attendance . They are there to talk to potential applicants and answer the questions they have about the company but the most important thing you need to do is remember their names .

Personal networking is meeting current employees of the firm through your own efforts. These could be cold messages to employees on LinkedIn but you will be surprised at how many people you can reach via your own friends . If you can find a current employee that is an alumnus of your university and a mutual friend that you share, then be confident in asking that mutual friend for an introduction. The employee will be much more receptive to any introductions this way and usually will be happy to give up 15 minutes on the phone . Even many partners are happy to chat with potential applicants that they have been introduced to.

If you have managed to talk to any current employees then be sure to name drop them in your cover letter , something like:

“A recent conversation with a current consultant, [name], confirmed my desire to pursue a career at [firm name]. I was thoroughly impressed by the emphasis you place on collaboration as well as the training opportunities you afford junior consultants.”

Doing this immediately shows that you understand the work involved and have a particular desire to work at that firm - two of the three requirements ticked off in one sentence.

It is not always possible to talk with a current employee, if this is the case then reference the author of a publication and state what you found interesting about it. These can be found on all firm websites.

  • 5) Feedback and Proofreading

Submitting a cover letter with grammatical mistakes or formatting errors is looked upon very negatively. Sending your cover letter to multiple people will help ensure that no mistakes have crept into your cover letter and it meets the high standards that consultants expect .

As you are trying to condense your highlights into a couple of paragraphs it can be hard to convey the message you want. Collating feedback from as many people as possible will allow you to elevate your cover letter further, if the reviewers know you personally and/or professionally they will be able to cast a judgment on how effective it is at conveying you, your achievements, and your motivations. Don’t feel like you need to implement every single piece of feedback but select the recurring ones and any that you feel will have a positive impact .

  • Cover Letter Example

When you have gathered all of the elements required you need to ensure a clear structure to demonstrate the three key factors:  potential, understanding, and desire . Whilst the order is not of great importance this example is comprised of 6 components:

  • Introduction

Firm highlights

Personal highlights

Career aspirations

When applying to different consultancies the section that changes most is the firm highlights section as this needs to be unique to each company.

Cover Letter Adresses

The cover letter should follow a traditional letter format with your name, address, email, and phone number featuring at the top right-hand side of the page and the company’s address below and aligned to the left-hand side under the date of writing.

Cover Letter Introduction

You should address the reader in a gender-neutral way . This can be done by using the opening “Dear Sir or Madam”.

The first line is a statement of what the letter is regarding (application), what role it is for, who it is with, and at what company.

  • Firm Highlights

Cover Letter Firm Highlights

This is where you can include the name of a current employee you’ve spoken to or the reference to the companies mission or values that caught your attention on their website. Everything that is included in this section shows your desire to work at the firm and even better if you can elaborate further and explain why that fits with your motivations and career ambitions .

  • Personal Highlights

Cover Letter Personal Highlights

This is the section where you can be bold and state your achievements without providing much detail. As consultants like to be concise, we recommend including 2-3 highlights in bullet point format . This makes them stand out and ensures that they will be read no matter how fast the reviewer is scanning the page .

Personal highlights can be anything from academic grades to scholarships awarded to musical awards but it can improve the flow of the letter if these achievements can be later related to consulting. With limited space, using one section to support the next is a useful way of communicating as much value as possible .

  • Career Aspirations

Cover Letter Career Aspirations

Consultants do not expect you to claim you want to be at the firm for the next 30 years, they are often open about their open-door policy . They cannot promote all of their staff due to the pyramid structure and those that leave for other careers are viewed as potential clients in the future . Despite this, you should state why you feel consulting is a good next step for you in your career; what you have learned during your studies, what interests you, what experiences you’ve had, how have they led you to consider a career in consulting?

Cover Letter Signature

We think it's most appropriate to sign off your cover letter with ‘Yours faithfully’ as even if you have spoken to the person you are sending it to before, they may not be the only one to read it.

It is now very easy to add an electronic print of your signature alongside a print of your name so we highly recommend that you do this. In almost all pdf viewers there is an option to a dd a signature to the page .

  • Cover Letter Variations
  • Applying From Abroad

If you are applying for an office in a location where you do not live and did not study then it is important to address this in your cover letter. You will need to demonstrate your right to work in that country or state any help you would need in obtaining the relevant visa, it is in both your and the companies interest to clarify this at the very start of the process. There is no point wasting either party's time unnecessarily. You will also need to be clear as to what the equivalent of your academic grades is in the country. Whilst they may accept grades from other countries, again it is important to clarify this at the start.

  • Applying as a Ph.D. graduate

It can be easy to assume that you have no relevant experience as a Ph.D. student but that is not true. Instead of focusing on work experience, focus on the components of your Ph.D. such as data collection, problems overcome, and collaboration with other researchers.

As data and especially big data is becoming an increasingly popular request from consulting clients, Ph.D. graduates are usually at an advantage here. State the data collection, cleaning and analysis you conducted in your personal highlights section. This is an easy way to show you have the potential to be a fantastic consultant.
