IELTS Causes and Effects Essay: Obesity in Children

This causes and effects model essay is about  obesity in children.

You specifically have to talk about the  causes  (reasons) of the increase in overweight children, and explain the  effects  (results) of this.

Here is the question:

The percentage of overweight children in western society has increased by almost 20% in the last ten years.

Discuss the causes and effects of this disturbing trend.

Thinking about Coherence & Cohesion

This particular essay is organized as follows:

  • Body 1: Causes
  • Body 2: Effects

Of course it is also possible to have a 3 body paragraph essay. For example

Child Obesity Essay

However, remember not to write too little on one part.

For example, if you wrote one very short paragraph about 'causes' with little support and most of your essay on 'effects', you may then be seen to have not fully answered both parts of the question.

Another possible way of organizing it is to put each cause and its effect within a separate paragraph:

  • Body 1: Cause 1 - Effect
  • Body 2: Cause 2 - Effect

If you do this though, each particular cause must relate to that specific effect.

Example Child Obesity Essay

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Causes and Effects Essay - Model Answer

Over the last ten years, western societies have seen close to a 20% rise in the number of children who are overweight. This essay will discuss some reasons why this has occurred and examine the consequences of this worrying trend.

The main cause of this problem is poor diet. Over the last decade there has been a prolific increase in the number of fast food restaurants. For example, on nearly every high street there is a MacDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut. The food in these places has been proven to be very unhealthy, and much of the advertising is targeted at children, thus ensuring that they constitute the bulk of the customers of these establishments. However, it is not only due to eating out, but also the type of diet many children have at home. A lot of food consumed is processed food, especially with regards to ready-made meals which are a quick and easy option for parents who are working hard.

The effects of this have been and will continue to be very serious. Firstly, there has been a large increase in health related diseases amongst children, especially diabetes. This debilitating illness means a child has to be injected with insulin for the rest of their life. Not only this, very overweight children often experience bullying from other children, which may affect their mental health. The negative stigma of being overweight may also affect self-esteem.

To sum up, it is evident that there are several causes of obesity amongst children, and a variety of negative effects. Society must ensure steps are taken to prevent this problem from deteriorating further.

Modern children are suffering from the diseases that were once considered to be meant for adults only. Obesity is a major disease prevalent among children. What are its causes and what solutions can be offered?

Nowadays, the increasing rate of overweight children and adults is a worldwide health issue. Obesity is a major problem which is increasing day by day in children. There are various reasons behind it. This essay will discuss the causes of obesity and offer some solutions.

The first cause of obesity is junk food. It is often seen that mostly children are fond of burgers, pizzas, noodles and . These types of foods are easily available to them in school canteens. Children love to purchase chips, , ice-cream for lunch. Moreover, in this modern era, parents are working and they do not have time to cook at home. Parents often buy dinner for their children instead of preparing food at home. This calorie-rich diet is making children obese. This problem can be solved by teaching children to cook healthy foods for themselves and banning junk foods and fizzy drinks in schools. This diet can be replaced by milk, juice and fruits for lunch.

The second cause of obesity is . It is true that the use of computers and television is increasing children. They spend most of their time watching television or playing video games on a computer. This technological advancement has reduced the level of physical activity in this specific age group. This issue can be resolved by encouraging children to do physical exercises. Parents can take their children to park to encourage playing with friends. Furthermore, schools can add sports in their curriculum to maintain physical fitness in their students.

To sum up, it is clear that main causes of obesity are unhealthy eating and not enough physical activities. This ailment can be prevented and treated by healthy eating and physical exercises.

More And More People Are Becoming Seriously Overweight | Band 8 IELTS Essay Sample

by Manjusha Nambiar · Published November 25, 2019 · Updated March 16, 2024

More and more people are becoming seriously overweight. Some people say that raising the price of fast foods will solve this problem. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Here is a band 8 IELTS essay on this topic written by one of our students. Need help with IELTS writing? Get your IELTS essays, letters and reports corrected by me.

Band 8 IELTS essay sample

An increasing number of people are getting diagnosed with obesity and associated health problems. While some argue that rise in the price of fast foods will alleviate this situation, I partially disagree with this view.

It is true that convenience foods play a vital role in weight gain. Due to the fact that they are high in salt, fat and calories, fast foods are considered unhealthy. Their cheap prices, however, are attractive and act as an added incentive for customers. Poor or middle class people are more likely to purchase junk foods since it is both enjoyable and affordable to eat. Increasing the price of fast food will certainly make it unaffordable to the lower strata of the society. Unfortunately, this will further limit the options available to them because healthy food is already unaffordable to them.

On the other hand, price hike cannot tackle the underlying issue. Healthy eating habits and regular exercise are the major solutions. Since people develop eating preferences at an early age, it is difficult / taxing for them to adopt alternatives later in life simply because of the price. For example, President Trump is known as a burger lover. His financial status has minimal impact on his food selections. It would be more effective for people to voluntarily eat healthy foods and develop proper eating habits. Also the government should take some measures to make healthy food accessible to all sections of the society. People should also cultivate the habit of doing workout every day. As it is impossible to completely avoid junk food, people should try to neutralize some of the negative effects by doing regular physical activity.

To conclude, even though price adjustments can manipulate people’s food selections to some extent, the government should put more emphasis on public awareness. Once citizens realize the risks associated with junk foods, they are more likely to make voluntary changes to their food habits.

Sample Essay

Obesity is causing  mayhem  in people’s health all around the world. Even in the world’s most prosperous western countries, the situation is worrying. There are several factors that contribute to this issue, and each one must be addressed separately. In the following paragraphs, I shall discuss the causes and possible solutions.

One of the most  notable  causes of this problem is the significant shift in our lifestyle as a result of extraordinary technological improvement and complexity, which has a consequential influence on our everyday lives and health. These advancements come at a cost to our health,  owing  to a lack of physical exercise and  lethargy  at the workplace and home. Also, the poor quality of the meals we consume on a daily basis  aggravates  the situation. These readily available products frequently have components that are heavy in calories, cholesterol, and fat, while also lacking critical vitamins, minerals, and protein, all of which are  detrimental  to human health.

Obesity, fatness, and obesity-related  disorders  such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes affect people in many nations. As a result, it is critical that we work together to  combat  this massive problem before it becomes a threat to our healthcare system. Teachers, parents, and the government as a whole should treat this as a top priority and take the required steps to address it at every level. For example, parents are required to monitor their children’s eating habits and ensure that they consume nutritious foods while limiting the amount of  enticing  junk food. Moreover, people should be encouraged to participate in physical workouts through various engaging activities. Additionally, the government can help by imposing a ban on unhealthy foods that are specifically created with a huge consumer base in mind.

To summarize, while many people nowadays are victims of bad diets, we can combat and beat this threat by exercising strong willpower and implementing preventive measures.

Meaning: (noun) a lack of energy and enthusiasm. Eg: Very large doses in animals cause lethargy.

  • Aggravated

  • Detrimental

IELTS Cause and Effect Essay

These essays often create confusion for IELTS test takers. Why? Because very often test takers confuse these with problem and solution essays, and this costs them band scores in Task Achievement.

In these essays, you need to write about the causes of these problems and the effects they have, NOT the problems and their solutions .

Sample Cause and Effect Essay topic

Today more people are overweight than ever before.

What are the primary causes of this?

What are the main effects of this epidemic?

The planning stage

Before you begin your IELTS writing task 2 , make sure you understand the essay topic. Clearly, it is about obesity, but if you write an essay with suggestions on what measures could be taken to help people achieve a healthy weight, this will give you a lower band score.

Look at the first question:

Here, you must come up with ideas for why people are more overweight nowadays. What do you think are the causes of these problems? Why is it so difficult to maintain a healthy weight nowadays? What changes in our society have made people heavier than they were 30, 40 or 50 years ago? Two ideas are enough.

  • less time to exercise and prepare healthy food
  • abundance of fast food and unhealthy food

Look at the second question:

What problems does obesity cause? Who is affected and how? Again, come up with 2 ideas.

  • higher mortality rates and illness
  • strain on the economy

Remember that for each idea, you need support. Support can be evidence, like statistics that prove your idea, or further explanation about why or how your idea is true.

  • less time to exercise and prepare food/ sedentary lifestyle-> Harvard University study shows that people are working on average 10 hours more per week than they were 40 years ago
  • abundance of fast food and unhealthy food -> provides a low-cost, easy solution to meal preparation but poor quality and high in fat
  • higher mortality rates and illness-> Being an unhealthy weight is associated with higher levels of strokes, heart disease and diabetes, which can lead to death
  • strain on the economy -> illness leads to lost productivity in the workplace and higher health care costs

The writing stage

With brainstorming completed, you can begin writing the introduction to your IELTS cause and effect essay. 2-4 sentences are enough.

  • Introduce the topic
  • Mention that there are several causes of obesity
  • Say that the problem creates serious effects on individuals and society

Do you have to say what the causes and effects are in the introduction? Not necessarily. If you can briefly mention them by name, then you can, but if doing so requires a lengthy explanation, bypass this and go straight to writing your body paragraphs.

Do not spend too much time on your introduction. The introduction of an IELTS essay needs to be concise and contain the required information but a better band score will be achieved by spending time developing your body, not the introduction.

Band 9 sample introduction

In countries around the world, the rates of obesity are skyrocketing nowadays. This is a situation that has multiple causes, creating effects that can be felt not only by the individual but by society as a whole. This essay will address the causes and effects of increased obesity, using statistics from Harvard University to provide evidence and support.

Body paragraph one - causes

Tips for structure.

In addition to solid ideas and support, a well-written paragraph also needs a clear topic sentence to introduce the central idea. You may also end with a statement of conclusion, which essentially is a rephrasing of your topic sentence.

Band 9 sample body paragraph one

A variety of factors have contributed to the rise in rates of obesity, all of which can be attributed to changes in our way of life. One such change is our increasingly sedentary lifestyle, brought on in part by more work. For example, a recent study by Harvard University shows that around the world, people are working on average 10 hours more per week than they were 40 years ago. As a result, people are sitting more and have even less time to focus on their health and fitness than they did in the past. Our increased work hours have created another problem related to our diet. With fewer hours at home, more and more people are turning to fast food and other unhealthy alternatives for their meals, which have become widely available and inexpensive, instead of cooking healthy food. The result of these issues is a society with epidemic levels of obesity.

Body paragraph 2 - effects

Many students struggle with how to create a solid link between the two body paragraphs. In an IELTS cause and effect essay, the topic sentence simply needs to introduce that the problem has a variety of effects. There can be a reference to the cause, if appropriate.

Band 9 sample body paragraph two

This rise in obesity has far-reaching effects, both on an individual and a societal level. For the individual, being overweight has been linked with higher mortality rates and illness. More specifically, people suffering from an unhealthy weight are known to have higher incidences of strokes, heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, obese people on average have a lower life expectancy than their normal weight counterparts. For society, with more citizens reaching obesity levels, a strain on our economy is created. Increased illness means that employees are taking more sick leave, resulting in a loss of productivity. Furthermore, additional healthcare is needed to treat obesity-related illness, adding costs that affect the patient, the employer and the healthcare system. Therefore, it is clear that obesity is a health crisis that reduces quality of life and poses problems for the economy, and in turn, society.

Writing the conclusion

Again, aim for brevity. It is possible to create a solid conclusion to your IELTS essay in two to three sentences.

A well-written conclusion needs to rephrase the topic again, mentioning that obesity is a problem with a number of factors and effects that are felt throughout society.

The last sentence should leave a thought-provoking statement for the examiner. This could be a prediction for the future or a statement highlighting the seriousness of the problem.

Band 9 sample conclusion

In conclusion, our sedentary lifestyle, extended work hours and consumption of unhealthy food has led countries around the world to high levels of obesity. The result of this trend affects all levels of society. It is imperative that measures are taken to solve this epidemic before it is too late.

Grammar - tenses

Band 9 essays need to show a wide range of grammar. One way to do this is to use a variety of tenses appropriately and accurately. In each of the paragraphs no fewer than 3 tenses were used.

A variety of factors have contributed to the rise in rates of obesity, all of which can be attributed to changes in our way of life.

For example, a recent study by Harvard University shows that around the world, people are working on average 10 hours more per week than they were 40 years ago.

Lexical Resources

Some topic-specific vocabulary will earn you higher marks in the lexical resources criterion.

  • sedentary lifestyle
  • epidemic levels
  • on a societal level
  • mortality rates
  • higher incidences of strokes
  • loss of productivity
  • health crisis
  • poses problems

Cause and effect essays are some of the easier tasks to write because you do not need to have a position and support it. They require a little knowledge of the topic, but remember, IELTS is a language test, not a knowledge test, so feel free to draw from personal experience.

Practice writing these types of essays but more importantly, get feedback for your writing. The team at IELTSPODCAST.COM is available to correct your essays and give you expert guidance quickly and affordably.

Sample Essay 1

The escalating issue of obesity has sparked debate over solutions, including raising prices on unhealthy foods. I believe this strategy, while not a panacea, forms part of a multifaceted approach to tackling obesity, alongside education and accessibility to healthier alternatives.

Increasing the cost of high-calorie, low-nutrient foods can indeed serve as a deterrent, making them less accessible to the general populace. Economic disincentives have historically influenced consumer behaviour, as seen in the tobacco industry, where higher prices significantly curbed smoking rates. A parallel can be drawn with fattening foods; by making them less economically attractive, we might encourage healthier eating habits. However, this approach alone is simplistic. It fails to address deeper societal and psychological factors that contribute to obesity, such as stress, lack of education about nutrition, and the availability of healthy options. Without addressing these root causes, the problem may persist or manifest in other unhealthy behaviours.

Moreover, focusing solely on price increases overlooks the necessity of fostering a culture that values nutrition and physical well-being. Education plays a crucial role in this. By implementing comprehensive nutritional education programs and ensuring access to affordable, healthy food options, we can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their diets. This, combined with price adjustments, could create a more effective strategy for combating obesity. Communities need environments that support healthy choices, including safe, accessible spaces for physical activity and supermarkets stocked with fresh produce.

In conclusion, while increasing the price of fattening foods might contribute to the fight against obesity, it should not stand alone. A holistic approach that includes education, accessibility to healthier options, and societal support for a culture of well-being is essential. By adopting such a comprehensive strategy, we can address the multifaceted nature of obesity and move towards a healthier society.

Sample Essay 2

The alarming rise in obesity rates, where people are becoming seriously overweight, has fueled debates on effective solutions. A popular proposal calls for raising the prices of high-calorie foods to reduce consumption. While this fiscal strategy has some merit, I argue that it is overly simplistic, neglects the impact on economically disadvantaged groups, and fails to address the multifaceted nature of the obesity epidemic.

In the lexicon of economic theory, the principles of supply and demand are more than theoretical constructs; they wield an undeniable influence over consumer behavior. This has been conspicuously validated by Mexico’s sugar tax policy, which triggered a marked decline in soda sales. Yet, the seemingly resplendent success of such a fiscal strategy masks the bleaker and more complex realities of socioeconomic inequality. Raising the cost of calorie-rich foods could inadvertently instate a 'nutritional divide,' making balanced diets a rarified luxury that only the affluent can regularly afford, thus entrenching a cycle of poverty and deteriorating health.

On the other side of the coin, the mounting complexities tied to the surge in obesity rates—where people are becoming seriously overweight—cannot be solved by economics alone. Scandinavian countries, in spite of their elevated food prices, demonstrate remarkably lower obesity prevalence. The secret lies in a multi-pronged public health strategy that extends far beyond economic disincentives. It encompasses educational campaigns, meticulously designed urban spaces conducive to physical activity, and stringent food-labeling laws that are transparent and informative. These varied elements synergistically forge a nuanced, comprehensive strategy, transcending economic solutions to offer a socially equitable and sustainable approach to a pervasive public health crisis.

In summary, the notion of augmenting food prices, while superficially appealing, is myopic and fraught with economic inequities. The genuine panacea resides in an integrative, multidisciplinary blueprint that couples fiscal levers with educational and environmental reform, thereby ensuring a sustainable and inclusive resolution to this burgeoning health epidemic.

Sample Essay 3

The escalating prevalence of obesity has become a pressing public health concern, affecting millions globally. A segment of society contends that surging the prices of high-caloric, unhealthy foods could serve as an effective deterrent. However, although economic intervention like increasing the price of high-calorie foods has merit, I assert that it's a superficial remedy that disproportionately affects lower-income families and overlooks broader, systemic factors such as educational programs and comprehensive public health policies.

The theory of supply and demand suggests that inflating the prices of calorie-laden foods would likely lead to a decline in their consumption—a point vividly illustrated by Mexico's sugar tax, which significantly curbed soda sales. However, such a strategy has its drawbacks; it disproportionately burdens those in lower socioeconomic tiers who often depend on cheap, unhealthy foods. This could perpetuate a form of dietary elitism, where nutritious meals become a luxury only the wealthy can afford, thus sustaining a cycle of poverty and deteriorating health.

On the flip side, obesity is a complex issue with a myriad of contributing factors that extend beyond simple economics. For instance, Scandinavian countries maintain lower obesity rates despite high food prices, a success attributed to comprehensive public health initiatives that encompass educational outreach, city planning that encourages physical activities, and strict food labelling laws. Therefore, a more integrated, multifaceted approach is essential. Initiatives like Singapore's "Healthier Dining Program," which incentivizes eateries to offer balanced food choices, showcase how socially inclusive, varied strategies can lead to sustainable improvements in both individual and societal health.

In conclusion, while the economic tactic of raising prices for unhealthy foods shows promise in curbing consumption, a holistic and inclusive strategy, incorporating educational programs, urban planning, and incentivized healthy eating options, offers a more sustainable and equitable solution for combating this multifaceted public health crisis.

Band 5+: More and more people are becoming seriously overweight. Some people think a solution can be to increase the price of fattening foods. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nourishment is considered to be a peoples essential need. However nowadays there is a tendency for a society to disregard nutritions is enough food due to a plethora of different reasons, such as overworking. There the corpulence is considered to be a serious issue, which a lot of people struggle with. Moreover, the solution to this problem may have already been created and suggests to justify simply increase the cost for hi – fat products. But will it work?

Looking precisely at the solution above, a few things can be mentioned. Firstly everybody knows that some governments already applies applied the strategy for alcohol and tobacco consumption. For example, Australia is a country where taxes on cigarettes or so superior Australians prefer not to waste their money on them. Therefore, analysing similar experience in different countries we can deduce the policies of promoting prices on fattening foods may be effective depending on a variety of factors. So that, if a country is democratic and has a magnets are commonly as well as a progressive taxation system, a price growth for each type of goods can be efficient for discouraging people from buying caloric products, as in our case.

The second important point which I want to count as a score for the solution is more pragmatic and mostly is taken from my own experience. Usually, when people come into supermarkets, grocery stores or even go online shopping, they choose goods on which the discount is provided.

All of us want to save some money, if we have a chance to do so. Hence, if I fattening foods were more expensive, people would definitely rather choose to buy something cheaper and healthier.

In conclusion, I think should be mentioned one especially important opposite point of view on the solution. Despite all positive examples presented above, some people are addicted to some products, for example, sugar containing foods. Therefore, no matter how much price is heighten, these people would continue consuming high-fat foods. However, in general, in the event of increased cost for this group of food the majority will surely prefer to retrench expenses. So, answering to the question in the first paragraph I truly believe that such solution may be quite rational to some extent.

Band 8 Sample | Causes of Obesity

Band 8 Sample | Causes of Obesity

Essay topic

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?

Band 8 essay sample

It is a fact that in some countries, the average weight of the citizens is shooting up while their fitness and health conditions are worsening. In my view this is mainly because of the food habits and modern lifestyle they follow. In this essay, I will examine these two factors and then propose a viable solution.

One of the foremost reasons for obesity is the consumption of unhealthy foods. Many people started to follow western food habits and eventually ended up eating high fat content foods like pizza and burger. Regular consumption of these fat rich foods will increase a person’s weight in a short span of time.

In addition to that, now-a-days, more and more people are living a sedentary lifestyle. They do not dedicate any time to do any kind of physical activity. As a result, they lose their resistance power. If this lifestyle continues then people will fall ill more frequently and lose their health permanently.

It is necessary that the government takes steps to open many sports complexes and fitness studios near residential communities. Most of the people who do not want to travel far to go to a sports center will be ready to use one if it is available nearby. In a study conducted by a popular newspaper 90% of the respondents said that they are willing to use the gym or any physical activity centers if they are within 3 kilometer radius.

To conclude, encouraging people to do more physical activities will not only improve their fitness and overall health but also help people to shed their weight.

Vocabulary: Obese, Fat or Overweight

Students often confuse the words: obese, fat and overweight. This lesson will explain the difference between these words so that you learn to use them correctly.

IELTS often has questions in both writing and speaking about the problems of eating fast food or problems with the modern diet. Making mistakes with these words is common and will damage your band score.

  • Obesity (n) / Obese (adj) = a medical condition when excess body fat has accumulated and can have a negative impact on a persons health by contributing to health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes or kidney problems. This term is often used incorrectly and is only used in extreme cases when a person’s weight is a serious health concern and is labelled as a medical condition.
  • Overweight (n) / Overweight (adj) = weighing more than is considered normal or more than is optimally healthy and can cause some health concerns depending on how overweight a person is. This is neither negative or positive in meaning and is just a statement of a person’s size.
  • Fat = being larger than normal. This is used informally to describe people who are considered larger than average. It is not a polite term to use and can be offensive to people.
