C1 Advanced: Key Word Transformation Mega Test

Key word transformations interactive worksheet

This is a loooong worksheet for students preparing to take the C1 Advanced exam, it has 82 key word transformation questions. I’ve basically just taken this great quizlet set and copy pasted it into a Google Doc, but it took a while so hopefully it’ll save you some time. Download the handout and answer key below:

Here are the PDFs:

I’ve also started work on a quizziz game based on the mega test.

I have a group who are taking the exam in 3 weeks so they want lots of practice, so I gave them this sheet with 78 expressions on it to study on Monday and told them to study it. Now I’m going to have them do the first 1/3 of the test in class today (Wednesday).

I’ll then send them the quizlet link so they can do spaced repetition at home.

Wow! This looks great! Unfortunately, I can’t see it. After downloading it, it opens in Words, but I can’t see anything. Strange! Has this happened to anybody else? Any ideas on what might be the problem? Thanks, James

Are you on a tablet? Some people have reported issues with some of the handouts on tablets. I can upload a PDF version too.

Thanks, Tim. I’m on a MacBook Air. If you could upload a PDF version, it’d be great.

Done, I’ve added them to the post underneath the word docs.

Thanks, Tim! I’m looking forward to using this with my C1 students.

Advanced (CAE) C1 Key Word Transformations – Inversion

Once your students get to a high C1 level, there isn’t much grammar left to surprise or challenge them. It’s often more important to focus on accuracy than to introduce things that are completely new. However, there are still a few nice, juicy grammar points that we can teach our Advanced students. Inversion is one of those. And, like always, it’s a good idea in an exam class to include the grammar the same way your students may see it in the exam. That’s why we’ve prepared inversion transformations for you to use with your CAE students.

inversion transformations

These transformations and many more are part of our book 230 Key Word Transformations for the Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) exam. The book is available as a digital download here on Breakout English or grab a physical paperback copy on Amazon.

GET 230 C1 ADVANCED (CAE) KEY WORD TRANSFORMATIONS:

In formal English, and in written language in particular, we use negative adverbials at the beginning of the sentence to make it more emphatic or dramatic.

The word order is inverted:

negative adverbial + auxiliary verb + subject + verb

Compare this example from a complaint letter:

NORMAL – I have never had such a bad experience before.

INVERSION – Never before have I had such a bad experience.

While it is an excellent idea to encourage your students to use inversion in their writing and potentially in speaking, inversion should only be used occasionally for dramatic effect. Overusing it will make their English sound rather unnatural.

Negative adverbials used in inversion

These are some commonly seen negative adverbials that are used with inversion.

  • Never before
  • Under no circumstances
  • On no account
  • Hardly (ever)
  • No sooner…than
  • Never again
  • Little (did he/she know)
  • Not until…*
  • Not since…*
  • Only when…*

*Note: Inversion is normally used in the clause directly following the negative adverbial. However, with these adverbials, inversion is used in the 2nd clause (e.g. Not until almost everyone had left did Nick start to have fun)

The Materials

Here are 10 inversion transformations in CAE style.

Level up to C1 with Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing could undoubtedly be ranking the list of the language skills assessed in the Cambridge C1 Advanced exam, as there is a lot of focus on candidates’ ability to express the same meaning in different ways. How come?

  • Let’s take for instance the Speaking paper . When asked a question, candidates must try to rephrase the words from the question, rather than merely repeating them. No English proficiency is shown otherwise. The same happens when the candidates interact – keeping too close to the other interlocutor’s speech patterns would bring no result.
  • In the Writing paper , the tasks themselves say candidates should use their own words as far as possible. Not doing so means showing a poor language range.
  • The Listening paper requires candidates to interpret the context extremely well, since never will the words heard in the recordings be the same as the ones from the choices provided to the questions in Parts 1,3 and 4, nor in the summary to the monologue in Part 2 (sentence completion).
  • Part 4 in the Reading and Use of English paper is chief among all the exam parts. One single wrong word, or even letter, affects a candidate’s overall mark.

Today’s activity will help you enhance your preparation for the Cambridge C1 Advanced exam. Roll up your sleeves and start levelling up your paraphrasing skills.

Step One Get to know the target language

To be good at paraphrasing requires a very good knowledge of the particles used with phrasal verbs, e.g. cut out , the dependent prepositions that certain adjectives or nouns are followed by, e.g. concerned with , as well as the prepositions that are part of fixed phrases, e.g. be all down to .

Read the list of fixed phrases, phrasal verbs, and other expressions below. They are classified into categories, given the preposition/particle they are used with.  Make sure you know what each of them means:

  • be in accordance with
  • be comparable to/with
  • put up with
  • be content with
  • in respect of
  • in the event of
  • be attracted to
  • to my surprise
  • be knowledgeable about
  • of/in between two minds about
  • talk someone into
  • by profession
  • come up against
  • get behind with
  • put forward
  • put together

Step Two Transform the sentences

Paraphrase the sentences. Remember to keep the meaning of the original sentence.

I’m attracted to music.

I’m not knowledgeable about his books.

I felt content with myself.

It wasn’t clear whether she approved of what we had done.

She was a teacher by profession.

To my surprise, they offered me the job as a designer.

He could play the whole piece of music by heart.

The album was popular and quickly sold out.

There were fears that robots would take over our lives.

I hoped I might pick up some useful tips.

I got sacked last week, so I got a bit behind with my rent.

We don’t like the temporary office location but we will have to put up with it until June.

Everyone says I take after my father because we look alike and both love jazz.

We bumped into an old school friend while she was visiting the capital city.

I found it hard to work out what the writer was getting at in the poem.

It took a while before the effects of the medication started to kick in.

The company management put forward several proposals for staff to discuss and vote on.

My uncertainty about what to do stemmed from a lack of experience in the field.

The prices in the shop were comparable with those online.

The accounting firm was fined because its actions were not in accordance with the law.

He decided to write to the manager in respect of a colleague’s behaviour.

I’m still in between two minds about taking up diving.

The concert was cancelled owing to lack of interest.

The newly elected president came up against a lot of difficulties.

We must investigate environmentally friendly ways of disposing of rubbish.

Due to the recession, the new company had to lay off several members of staff.

We need to put together a business plan to rescue the company.

After several weeks, I was talked into joining my brother on that trip.

Please leave the building by the nearest exit in the event of a fire.

For many of the above sentences, paraphrasing can be achieved in many other ways, by using other lexical bits or grammar structures. Not providing you with a key word is deliberate, so that you come up with other ways to transform the given sentences. However, the answers provided make use of the C1 vocabulary a potential Cambridge exam candidate must be well familiar with. So, stay hungry, be thirsting for new English vocabulary!

Stay tuned for more words of advice and handy material!

Practice Tests: Open Cloze | C1 Advanced (CAE)

Part 2 of the C1 Advanced (CAE) Paper is called ‘ Open Cloze ‘. This part consists of a short text with  eight gaps . Unlike Part 1, there are no choices for what word you need. You must use your knowledge to fill the gap with the correct word.

Essential Tips:

  • Read the text, ignoring the gaps, to get a general understanding.
  • Think about the missing words. Each gap only needs one word, usually a grammatical word, e.g. pronoun, linker or preposition, rather than topic vocabulary,
  • Carefully read the text around each gap and think about what type of word is missing, e.g. dependent preposition or part of a fixed expression.
  • When you have finished, read your completed text again and check that it makes sense.

C1 Advanced (CAE) Open Cloze: Tests

Open cloze: test 1.

Read the text. Think of the word which best fits each gap. Write the correct word in each gap

The role of antibiotics in our life

Although there are many strains of antibiotic bacteria now present in hospital wards, antibiotics have effectively served their original purpose over the course of the past eighty years. They have been able to treat the infections of countless individuals and saved millions of lives.

Antibiotics have changed the way in which many common diseases are viewed. being infected with bacterial pneumonia, for instance, is no longer considered fatal. Rather, it is viewed as a mundane infection which can be cured with a simple course of antibiotics. The number of antibiotics available for use has also affected their impact on|upon society. Even if one antibiotic is ineffective at treating a disease, there are, for most common infections, a host of other drugs that can be used to effectively cure the disease.

The development of antibiotics over the past eighty years has changed the relationship between humans and disease. Antibiotics have given humans the power to fight back effectively against microorganisms in a way that would have been considered impossible just a century ago.

Open Cloze: Test 23

Read the text. Think of the word which best fits each gap. Write the  correct word in each gap

Football in the United Kingdom

Both the varieties of football that originally hailed from Britain, the Rugby and Association games, have probably never been as popular as they are now. The association game, or soccer as it has become generally known, is now almost globally popular and judging by the last few World Cups, before long a team from Asia, Africa or North America will go on to win the trophy. Rugby’s progress has been less dramatic but the game is becoming increasingly international and is surely destined to continue to expand.

Of course, periodically it is likely that both varieties of football will be afflicted by|with problems stemming from a downturn in the world economy and difficulties generated by financial mismanagement. Collectively, however, their future appears bright. Peculiarly enough, despite this very little is known about the origins of modern football and many questions relating to its growth and development remain unanswered. Football is a very old game, especially in Britain.

FCE, CAE, CPE

Practice tests online, c1 advanced (cae) open cloze: tips & strategy.

  • Read the  title and the whole text  so that you understand what it is about.
  • Read  the whole  sentence in which the gap occurs , to look for clues as to what kind of word you need.
  • Check the words  before and after each gap  and look for grammatical collocations.
  • Remember you must write only  one  word.
  • You are  never required to write a contraction . If you think the answer is a contraction, it must be wrong, so think again.
  • Read the whole text through once you have completed it to make sure you have not missed any connectors, plurals or negatives.

Contractions (e.g. don’t, we’ve, won’t) count as two words. However, can’t is a contraction of cannot, which is one word

Sometimes, there is more than one correct answer. Cambridge will always account for this and all options will be accepted. However, you should not write more than one answer.

Losing time on this activity might cost you points later in the exam because you won’t have enough time to do other tasks well
