Invest in the Future of Your Profession

The Accounting Doctoral Scholars Program was created by the biggest accounting firms, in conjunction with the AICPA Foundation, to advocate for an increased number of accounting professors with real-world experience in audit and tax. Beginning with Fall 2021 enrollments, we opened the program to three additional disciplines: management accounting, information systems, and financial accounting with a focus on data analytics.

It is our belief that professionals with recent public accounting experience can add significant value to the university experience by obtaining their doctorate degrees and transitioning into an academic faculty role. As an accounting professor, you will go on to teach and research, mentor the next generation of students, and help to shape the future of our profession.

Following this career path can be a life-changing step, for yourself and for the minds you influence in the university setting. Please explore our Resource Center to learn more about how you can make a positive impact on the accounting profession for years to come.

The program sponsors are committed to helping address the shortage of accounting faculty by providing funding for the ADS Program and by encouraging members of their organizations to consider becoming accounting faculty members.  *Note: Pre-mergers and acquisitions of sponsoring organizations, for a complete list of sponsors, please  email us .

24 Accounting Scholarships To Apply For Now!

What is the one thing nearly every business and company around the world have in common? They all deal with money! As a result, they all need the expert services of professional accountants. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that by 2029 there will be 1.5 million accountants and auditors working in the US.

Job prospects are strong, but those with the best academic credentials may have more opportunities. That’s why we’ve put together a list of accounting scholarships that can help cover the costs of tuition, so you can focus on your studies instead of your bills!

Scholarship Tips For College Students

Accountants are in such demand that several private organizations sponsor scholarships that help students get trained to enter the workforce. But that doesn’t mean they give free money to just anyone. So before we get to our list, let’s review some essential tips to give you an edge over the competition when applying for an accounting scholarship!

Start Early

Once you’ve chosen your major and school, it’s time to get cracking on those scholarship applications. There’s no reason to wait, and the earlier you start, the more opportunities you’ll discover! If you see a scholarship you’re interested in, but the application window has not yet opened, just make a note of it and come back later.

Save Time By Screening For Eligibility

The first thing you should do when reviewing scholarship listings is to determine your eligibility. There’s no reason to read through lengthy passages explaining the history and purpose of a scholarship if you don’t qualify to begin with. Feel free to skip ahead to the eligibility requirements.

Be Mindful Of Deadlines

After finding the eligibility details, the next bit of info to hunt for is the application deadline. It’s helpful to create a tracker listing all the scholarships you intend to apply for, then filtering the results by due dates. Stay organized so you won’t miss out on any opportunities.

Write A Persuasive Essay

Organizations that sponsor scholarships want to give their money to the best candidates. It’s your job to persuade them you are such a candidate! Meeting minimum eligibility requirements isn’t enough. Research their mission and values; figure out what might excite their application review board. Put yourself in their shoes and write an application that makes them say, “Wow!”

Edit, Edit, Edit!

Nobody wants to get an application riddled with errors and typos. Make sure to carefully proofread your materials before submitting them. If you have to input text into an online form, draft your text in a document first. Edit until it’s perfect, then cut and paste the info into the online form. Give it one more look to make sure you didn’t miss any words or letters.

Take Note Of How Scholarships Impact Other Financial Aid

Rick Antle

The PhD specialization in Accounting prepares students to become accounting scholars engaged in research and teaching at the highest levels in the general areas of financial information and contracting within and across organizations.

Yale SOM’s specialization in accounting is designed to develop strong theoretical and empirical skills. There is a heavy emphasis on original research to form a base for sustained scholarship. Co-authored research, with both faculty and fellow PhD students, is encouraged and supported.

Yale’s accounting program is small (matriculating one to two students each year), and involves informal and spontaneous frequent interactions with faculty. The program maintains a 1:1 faculty-to-student ratio. Students interact with emerging research in a host of ways, from conferences held on campus to weekly seminars where faculty and fellow PhD students present and discuss their work.

Candidates tend to pursue a broad range of research interests, helped by courses in accounting as well as in various areas of management, Department of Economics, Yale Law School, and other parts of the University. They develop fruitful relationships with other Ph.d. students, especially from the Finance PhD program.

Examples of research submitted as dissertations by students in the program:

Accounting ph.d., earn a ph.d. in business and a major concentration in accounting and learn the essentials in theory, research methods and contemporary accounting issues.

Accounting Research involves the systematic and scientific study of accounting systems, institutions, standards and regulations for the purpose of understanding and characterizing their decision-facilitating and decision-influencing roles within organizations, in product and capital markets, and across economies. For instance, financial reporting systems play many roles in publicly held organizations characterized by separation of ownership from control. They help investors in valuing their claims to firms in financial markets (valuation role), are essential for corporate control and managerial performance evaluation (auditing, governance and stewardship roles), and impact how firms allocate their resources and make financial decisions (real effects). In a similar vein, management accounting systems facilitate planning and control within organizations. Often, these many roles of accounting information interact, posing challenges for system designers, policy makers, and standard setters.

The main goal of the accounting doctoral program is to train students to do high-quality research, and become influential scholars in top academic institutions. The accounting group has world-class senior faculty and young, talented scholars with considerable expertise in the above topics and a vibrant research environment. In addition, the program leverages the resources and excellence of Rice University in related fields such as finance, economics and statistics. Students will be required to take courses in economics, statistics, econometrics, finance, and a rigorous set of cutting-edge research seminars covering the essentials in theory, research methods, and contemporary accounting issues.

Program features:

  • World-class faculty
  • Engaging research environment
  • Highly competitive financial package
  • Resources of a premier research university
  • Personal attention and mentoring in the Rice tradition

Overview of Accounting Ph.D. Seminar Series

Introduction to Accounting Research The course offers a thorough and broad-ranging introduction to accounting theory and research. It covers origins and evolution of key relevant accounting institutions, thought, paradigms and methods.

Analytical Research The course provides a thorough and comprehensive introduction into the key economic theories underlying a significant part of contemporary cutting edge accounting research. The course is designed to be sufficiently deep to support both students intent on pursuing analytical research and at the same time broad enough that students with an empirical orientation will gain a solid foundation.

Empirical Research in Accounting The course provides a thorough and comprehensive synthesis of empirical accounting research, covering the key “classic” papers in the major research areas, methodological issues and emerging areas within empirical accounting research.

Advanced Contemporary Accounting Research The course provides a more advanced treatment of cutting edge, predominantly empirical accounting research. Accordingly, the course content is expected to change frequently to reflect the current state of accounting research.

For doctoral students who have chosen accounting as their area, the Ph.D. degree requirements are as follows.

  • Students must complete a review course in Quantitative Methods in the summer before the beginning of the first semester.
  • During the  first two years of the program, students must take a minimum of three doctoral-level courses per semester and preferably four courses in total per semester. The chosen courses must be approved by the area PhD  advisor.
  • The student is expected to attend at least four doctoral seminars organized in the accounting area during the student’s first two years in the Ph.D. program and additional accounting doctoral seminars as required by the student’s advisor. The student may attend the same seminar more than once upon approval by the area PhD advisor or a faculty mentor/advisor.
  • The student is expected to attend all research workshops (presentations of faculty members from other business schools that visit JGSB to present their research or internal presentations by JGSB faculty or Ph.D. students) organized in the accounting area during the student’s tenure in the Ph.D. program. The student must lead a discussion preceding the workshop with the other Ph.D. students each semester. Ph.D. students will designate a senior Ph.D. student to keep track of this requirement and provide a report to the area faculty advisor at the end of the spring semester.
  • The firs-year summer research work should involve a replication of analysis of a published/working paper with an extension in the area of the student’s interest. The summer study/paper must be presented to accounting faculty at a research workshop no later than September 30th in the fall semester of the second academic year. The content and format of this presentation will be determined by the student’s faculty mentor/summer research advisor. A failure to meet this deadline may result in the student being put on probation.
  • The second-year summer research must result in a working paper (with at least preliminary results), which must be presented to accounting faculty at a research workshop no later than November 30th in the Fall semester of the third academic year. Although we encourage solo-authored study, this summer research could be joint work with the faculty mentor/faculty advisor, but the student is expected to take the lead. A failure to meet this deadline may result in the student being put on probation.
  • Students must pass a comprehensive exam administered by the accounting faculty at the end of the second year. Only students not on probation and with a satisfactory annual evaluation are eligible to take the comprehensive exam. The exam will be jointly administered and graded by accounting faculty, under the supervision of the accounting area advisor. The exam is focused on the coursework taken in accounting and topics covered in research workshops offered by the accounting area. A successful performance in the exam will demonstrate the student’s competency in accounting and provide the foundation from which he or she begins the research that will form the basis of the dissertation.
  • Students are expected to constitute their dissertation committee by the beginning of their fourth year in the program.
  • During the dissertation phase (post successfully completing the comprehensive exam), students are strongly encouraged to take one course every semester (from the first semester of the third year to the second semester of the fourth year) to advance their skills and knowledge in tools, techniques, and topics relevant to their area of interest/dissertation topic. Students are expected to select these courses in consultation with the area PhD advisor or faculty/dissertation advisor.
  • Students are expected to successfully defend a dissertation “pre-proposal” by the end of the Fall semester of their fourth year to their dissertation committees. The pre-proposal is expected to lay out the main thesis topic, methodology, discussion of the relevant literature, and preliminary analysis.
  • Students are expected to successfully defend their full dissertation proposal by the end of the fourth year.
  • Students are expected to complete and defend dissertation within a maximum of 7 years from time of matriculation.

David Ignatius’s ‘Phantom Orbit’ is a twisty, believable spy novel

The latest novel by the Washington Post writer draws back the curtain and shows how the deliberatively murky world of intelligence and espionage really works.

“Phantom Orbit,” the latest spy thriller from Washington Post foreign affairs columnist David Ignatius, has all the trademarks of his beloved books. There’s lots of inside baseball (no doubt supplied by the senior officials in the defense and intelligence worlds he thanks in the acknowledgments) and topics ripped from today’s headlines: threats to the GPS system and satellites; a renewal of the “Great Powers” struggle with Russia and China; allegations of widespread sexual harassment at the CIA; and, of course, covid. As with all Ignatius’s novels, “Phantom Orbit” draws back the curtain and shows how the deliberatively murky world of intelligence and espionage really works.

The novel opens with a tantalizing prologue in which Russian scientist Ivan Volkov tries to pass a dangerous secret about U.S. satellite systems to the CIA. The agency, suspicious of his intentions, seems to ignore him and so, in desperation, he contacts an American woman he once knew and suspected of being a spy, in the hope that she can make the powers-that-be listen.

We then learn what happened in the preceding decades. Volkov has the bad luck to come of age in Russia in the years surrounding the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He’s a brilliant math nerd who wants to pursue a PhD at a time when everything is in flux: The Soviet system is in tatters, and the new rules are still being written. When he can no longer afford Moscow State University, he accepts a scholarship from Tsinghua University in Beijing, where he is quickly noticed by professor and Party power player, Cao Lin. Volkov is steered toward a career in aerospace, specifically satellite operations. He knows he’s being groomed to be useful to the Chinese physicist, but as a Russian, is used to being manipulated. At the same time, he’s being watched by a Russian intelligence officer, who wants Volkov in his pocket for his own purposes.

Ignatius fleshes out other characters, adding depth to the narrative. Cao Lin, for instance, has over the years become a shadowy figure in the Chinese government, heading a “special committee” for the powerful Central Military Commission. He furthers the government’s capabilities through any means possible, recruiting useful foreigners along the way. And then there’s Edith Ryan, the young American CIA officer with whom Volkov fell in love in his youth. After they part ways, we see her early career at the agency, her transition out of clandestine service to analysis and, eventually, to the Directorate of Science and Technology, where she becomes a specialist in satellites. After she retires from the government, she makes a sideways move to private industry in support of the intelligence community. And it’s at this point that we understand what the threat is, the nefarious plot that Volkov and Ryan must work together to overcome.

The story is entertaining and informative — but is it, as billed, a thriller? Thriller readers have come to expect breathless, page-a-minute writing that propels them through a dizzying, multilayered plot. Of course, in real life stories don’t unfold that way, and, as someone who has worked in U.S. intelligence, I know that spy stories certainly do not. Events unfold in more of a slow burn. To be sure, Ignatius has written an interesting novel, peopled it with rich, believable characters and built a wholly realistic plot. He’s chosen to tell the story chronologically, which well serves the content — different storylines, lots of moving pieces, technical subject matter, backstory that enriches readers’ grasp of the stakes — but sacrifices tension. And that’s a luxury today’s thriller writers generally aren’t allowed.

Then throw in the accessible explanations of math and science necessary for readers to understand the vulnerabilities inherent in satellites, and well, you can see what an ambitious novel it is. It’s one well worth reading. Still, though it may seem like a small thing, I wish they’d take the word “thriller” off the cover and replace it with “novel.”

Alma Katsu worked for more than 30 years in government intelligence. She is the author of the spy thrillers “Red Widow” and “Red London,” and her serialized story, “The Spy Who Vanished,” will be published in July.

IUS Graduate Headed to Maurer School of Law on Full Scholarship

Christian Scott wearing a striped sweater pictured on the IU Southeast campus.

New Albany, Ind.- The IU Southeast class of 2024 has amazing opportunities ahead of them, with graduates going in many directions. One outstanding graduate, Christian Scott, is headed to IU Bloomington’s Maurer School of Law on a merit-based, full ride scholarship.

The General Studies, Pre-Law, and Accounting major from New Albany entered IU Southeast in the Spring 2023 semester after graduating from Ivy Tech during the pandemic. He chose IUS because it was close to home. He was homeschooled and found the adjustment to college life nerve-wracking at first, but his time soon became fun. Being part of the “pandemic class” made him appreciate the impact of in-person education.

“I’ve really enjoyed having in-person classes because of the connections I have been able to make with professors and students alike,” said Scott.

Scott was part of the Honors program during his time at IU Southeast, which he says made a big impact on him. He has also been involved in numerous activities and organizations, including student government and Model UN. He appreciates the perspective he gained being on a faculty committee as a student and called his time with Model UN memorable.

“Being involved on campus has given me a bunch of great experiences that will inform my graduate education and future career,” said Scott.

Looking back, Scott says he would advise himself to take classes in person, get involved on campus, volunteer as much possible, and know that he was capable of doing good work.

Outside of his course work and activities, Scott has done Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 12 years. His work experience includes concrete work, framing, drywalling, electrical, roofing and working as a DSP. He is also an update tester for the game Nebulous: Fleet Command.

Scott says his parents always stressed the importance of education. His father has and MBA and a Master’s in Public Management, and his mother is earning an Ed.D in Adult and Community Education this spring. Scott says he is happy to follow in the footsteps of his parents, who provided a good example to him and his younger siblings.

Scott hopes to enroll in their joint JD/MBA with the Kelly School of Business once he completes his first year. He plans to practice tax law and is open to the possibility of serving as an economic officer in the Foreign Service after law school graduation, and will take the entrance exam for that next year.
