Women in transition workshop
While the menopause is commonly understood as a ‘hormone deficiency’, numerous studies have shown that the menopause is not solely a biological phenomenon, but is influenced by environmental, social, and cultural factors. Given the variation in menopause experience and its complexity, how to best support women through this transition is a considerable societal challenge. It is our belief that this question can only be tackled through an interdisciplinary approach. The workshop ‘Women in Transition’ seeks to build the groundwork for such interdisciplinary collaboration, drawing insights from the fields of medicine, sociology, communication and literature. The questions driving the workshop is about the role of biological, sociological and cultural factors in the menopausal experience, and how this insight can be used to facilitate the work of medical researchers and practitioners. The workshop will be structured ‘from the macro to the micro’: from large quantitative population studies, through quantitative/qualitative data gathered in organisations, to individual experiences expressed in literary works. Through this structure, the workshop will focus on the synergies between different disciplinary approaches, identifying the ways in which medical, sociological and humanistic approaches can help overcome some of the challenges of the menopause and shed some light on its complexity. 13.00 – 13.45 Welcome A short cultural history of the menopause Consultant Ella Fegitz, PhD Menopause – an unusual aging phenomenon Kaare Christensen, MD, PhD, Professor, Danish Aging Research Center, SDU Introduction to the molecular and cellular biology of Estrogen action on target organs Moustapha Kassem, MD, PhD, Professor, Department of Endocrinology, OUH 13.45 - 14.00 Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy for health maintenance during aging: Is it possible? PhD Courses in Denmark
Writing scientific papers in english (wsp), the phd school at the faculty of engineering at university of southern denmark.
Writing Scientific Papers in English (WSP)
The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, Odense Teaching language: English - ECTS / weighting: 5 ECTS / 0.083 full-time equivalent. Teacher: Bridget Hallam Period: Spring/Autumn Offered in: Odense
Prerequisites: Enough results to write about, written into a reasonably good, complete draft of a scientific paper. This means that the course is not so suitable for new PhD students but better for those who already have done work worth submitting to a conference.
Content - Key areas: This course guides each student through maturing their own scientific paper through two revisions, resulting in a submission more likely to be accepted. Online lectures covering the characteristics of a good paper and how to write one, including how to find relevant papers to cite. Students rework their paper based on the information given and prepare 10-min presentations explaining the background to their work. Papers (version 1) are submitted via a formal conference management system.
Timetabled Presentation Day : Halfway through the course, students give their presentations and choose which of their classmate's papers they wish to review. Lecture on publishing papers, the reviewing process, and how to respond to reviews. Students are assigned two of their classmates’ papers to review. They submit their reviews via the conferencing system.
Students the edit their papers according to the classmate reviews and send the revised paper (version 2) to a) the conferencing system and b) a suitable reviewer that they have found. Students edit their paper according to the professional review they receive.
FINALLY: When they are ready, students hand in the professional review, their revised paper (version 3) and a covering letter. Bridget then reviews the v3 paper and assesses the rest.
Learning outcomes: To improve the chance of your papers getting accepted; and to take people through the paper review process. Students also get experience using a standard conferencing system. Wider goal: to improve the quality of scientific paper-writing in English.
Literature: Course overheads, web pages.
Time of classes: The course runs in spring and autumn each year. The course has one timetabled presentation day, which is compulsory, in the middle of the course and the rest of the course happens online. The spring presentation day is April 8th 2024.
Lessons: Most of the 5 ECTs of work is done in your own time, some before and some after the timetabled day. Deadlines have been spread out to allow space for your other commitments.
Form of instruction: Online lectures, emails, presentations, written.
Evaluation Individual examination, pass/fail, approval by the teacher. Assessment for this course involves satisfactory (pass/fail) production of several elements:
a) a paper written by the student about his/her own work; b) a presentation of this paper; c) two reviews of fellow-students' papers; d) an improved version of their own paper; e) a final version edited according to a professional reviewers' comments; f) a covering letter.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems
However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds. Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.
Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents. Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

Features of the macrostructure and microstructure of uranium dioxide powders are considered. Assumptions are made on the mechanisms of the behavior of powders of various natures during pelletizing. Experimental data that reflect the effect of these powders on the quality of fuel pellets, which is evaluated by modern procedures, are presented. To investigate the structure of the powders, modern methods of electron microscopy, helium pycnometry, etc., are used. The presented results indicate the disadvantages of wet methods for obtaining the starting UO 2 powders by the ammonium diuranate (ADU) flow sheet because strong agglomerates and conglomerates, which complicate the process of pelletizing, are formed. The main directions of investigation that can lead to understanding the regularities of formation of the structure of starting UO 2 powders, which will allow one to control the process of their fabrication and stabilize the properties of powders and pellets, are emphasized.
