Department's Overview: Finance

The rapid progress of financial theory has stimulated enhanced innovations and global competition in the world financial system for the last quarter century. Advancements in asset management techniques, corporate finance, and risk management technologies have brought about a remarkable increase in the efficiency of capital, but they have also revealed some of the inherent flaws in various aspects of the economic system. Today, the strengthening of financial research and education has become a driving force greatly contributing to the balanced growth of the world economy as the discipline learns from past mistakes and accumulates further advances in knowledge.

In recognition of these trends, the Faculty of Economics of the University of Tokyo established the Department of Finance in April 2007 with two main objectives: to cultivate world-class financial scholars and to create a talented group of graduates who will lead the financial world in Japan.

The aim of this department is to train researchers and specialists to be capable of applying current economic theories to practical issues and policy design to various aspects of the contemporary economy. Department of Economic History

A fundamental fact of the social sciences is the impossibility of conducting scientific experiments. Historical analysis that evaluates the actual facts is as fundamental to social sciences as is theoretical analysis that predicts potential events. The purpose of this department is to shed light on the developmental processes of the world's economies from historical vantage points. The faculty members in this department can be classified into those specializing in the economic history of Japan and those specializing in economic history of regions outside of Japan. But they all try to be global in their perspective and relevant to contemporary issues, without, of course, losing the rigor of analyzing historical materials.

First, it deals with the relationship between firms and the markets that surround them. This is a research area that is witnessing rapid development in recent years. Second, the department studies the administration of business and the internal organization of firms. Third, the department is concerned with the management of financial flows within firms and the accounting methods and practices concerning financial data. ◆ Required Japanese Level Ability at least N1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test

Department of Quantitative Finance

The Graduate School of Economics established the Finance Program in April 2005 with two main objectives: to cultivate world-class financial scholars and to create a talented group of graduates who will lead the financial world in Japan. To have a profound understanding of economic and social mechanisms, the Finance Program attaches great importance to the study of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and accounting. The study of finance covers two kinds of activities: Financial Strategy and Financial Public Policy. Financial Strategy includes asset management, development of financial products, corporate finance, risk management and other activities in the private sector. Financial Public Policy includes financial regulation, financial system design, monetary policy, currency regulation and other policy measures used by governments and central banks. Our program encompasses both themes systematically into a unique experiment. ◆ Required Japanese Level      Ability at least N1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test ◆ Applications Distribution/Application Period Master’s program    Please visit https://www.student.e.u-tokyo.ac.jp/grad/m-nyushi-e.html for more information. Fees for Finance and Accounting Courses in Japan

Public universities.

Undergraduate and Graduate Programs : For public universities, the annual tuition fee is relatively standardized across Japan. As of the last update, the annual tuition is approximately 535,800 JPY (about 4,800 USD). This is a general figure and can vary slightly from one institution to another. Public universities tend to be less expensive than private ones.

Private Universities

Undergraduate Programs : Tuition fees at private universities can vary widely but generally start from about 800,000 JPY to over 2,000,000 JPY (approximately 7,200 to 18,000 USD) per year for undergraduate programs in finance and accounting.

Graduate Programs : For graduate (Master’s and MBA) programs, the fees can be in the same range or higher, especially for programs that are specifically designed for international students or have a global orientation.

Doctoral Programs

Tuition Fees : Doctoral programs may have similar or slightly higher tuition fees compared to Master's programs. However, many doctoral students receive research stipends or scholarships that can cover a significant portion of their tuition fees and living expenses.

Additional Costs

Admission Fees : Students should also consider the one-time admission fees, which can range from 200,000 JPY to 300,000 JPY (approximately 1,800 to 2,700 USD).

Living Expenses : Living costs in Japan can vary significantly depending on the city. On average, students might need between 100,000 to 200,000 JPY (approximately 900 to 1,800 USD) per month for housing, food, transportation, and other personal expenses.

Books and Supplies : Additional costs for textbooks, study materials, and other academic supplies can vary by program but should be factored into the overall budget.
