Department of political science.

Making sense of today’s world - with its very fragile balances - is a challenge. Finding resilient solutions at the political and administrative level to those (foreseen and unforeseen) transformative breaks of balance is an even harder task. The researchers and teaching fellows of the department of Political Science embrace this challenge, providing political science and public administration-related knowledge to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The diverse background of our staff - in political science, public administration, international relations, sociology, and philosophy - allows us to work creatively everyday towards finding those answers and solutions in diverse policy fields such as energy, climate, migration, foreign security, cyber, EU external relations, health and monetary policy. Focusing on both theory and practice, political and administrative processes are conceptualised, analysed, and compared - at both the national and international levels, with a specific interest in European and global politics.

Our objective is to guide the FASoS students to thinking critically and creatively about contemporary political challenges - and be leading actors in making sense of them, ultimately contributing to find those resilient solutions. The staff of the Department of Political Science contributes to the following programmes :

  • BA European Studies
  • BA Arts and Culture
  • BA Digital Society
  • BSc Global Studies
  • Master European Studies
  • Research Master European Studies
  • Master European Public Affairs (in cooperation with the European Institute for Public Administration)
  • Master Public Policy and Human Development (in cooperation with the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance)

Celebrating 250 ISS PhD graduates

The stories and knowledge of our doctoral alumni

phd in political science in netherlands

The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) offers a four-year programme leading to an internationally recognized degree.

Our PhD researchers work on topics in the field of global development and social justice based on a strong theoretical footing and using cutting-edge qualitative and quantitative methods.

Providing a creative environment for critically-minded and independent scholars

The ISS’s aim is to provide a creative and lively  environment for  critically minded and independent scholars to contribute to positive social change, as well as global justice and equity. Many of our PhD candidates are experienced professionals with a track record in development, activism, academia and/ or public service, enriching the academic exchange with their experiences and views.

Part of our broader research programme

All PhD researchers are invited to participate in our global research programme and in at least one of the research groups:

  • Civic Innovation
  • Development Economics
  • Political Ecology
  • Governance, Law & Social Justice

Collaborative research schools

PhD researchers 'in the driver's seat'

Researchers join a diverse and close-knit community of scholars.

At the moment, 153 PhD candidates from 49 nationalities countries are enrolled in the PhD programme. Many of them work at their own desk in the ISS building, discussing their research with their peers and supervisory team, refining their research proposal, or are in the final phase of writing their thesis. Those in the second and third years of the programme are usually away doing fieldwork, collecting original data to answer their research questions.

Our philosophy is that PhD researchers are 'in the driver’s seat' for their project, working closely with our multidisciplinary and passionate faculty engaged in global development research.

A PhD researcher’s fieldwork activities benefit from belonging to a dynamic and vibrant community,  complimented by rigorous preparation including safety and security training, access to the ISS global network along with experienced and thoughtful guidance and solid institutional support.

ISS occasionally has vacancies for fully-funded PhD candidates, and takes part in several scholarship programmes. However, ISS does not have a scholarship programme of its own, and most PhD candidates organize their own funding , through their government, a foundation, or self-funding.

Candidates find that the PhD trajectory provides them with space to reflect on their experiences and that the degree opens opportunities to continue or change their career path.

PhD education

NIG provides a high-quality training program at the doctoral-level.

Our training program is targeted at PhD-Candidates of one of our NIG member institutions. Unsure whether your research institution is a NIG member? Click here . Our courses are also open to participants from other universities, if places are available. Please contact us for more information here .

Our training program has three goals:

  • PhD-Candidates broaden their knowledge and familiarize themselves with pertinent developments in public administration and political science
  • PhD-Candidates improve the quality of their own doctoral research by taking specialist courses as well as discussing theoretical- and methodological topics with top scholars and other PhD-Candidates
  • PhD-Candidates gain access to a broad network of junior and senior scholars within their fields of research.

This training program can be combined with requirements from your local graduate school. There are multiple ways to participate in our training program, read more about this below.

We offer a training program in which can be participated in multiple ways.

Option 1: All-inclusive PhD member

This option gives you access to all we have to offer. This means you can take all courses we offer (including international courses such as the ECPR methods courses), and you can also enter our annual work conference and other activities such as research seminars and colloquia for free. You register for courses and activities you want to attend individually, but only pay a one-time all-inclusive fee of 1700,-.

There are two ways you can make use of this unlimited access to our courses:

(1) You can follow our pre-set training program which consists of a study load of 30 EC of core courses and electives. Once these 30 EC are completed, you are offered a NIG diploma which is accredited by the European Association of Public Administration Accreditation (EAPAA). An accredited diploma is a prerequisite of some of our member universities before handing in your dissertation. Moreover, our diploma will benefit those with multidisciplinary backgrounds to show you are an expect in the field of public administration and/or political science.

(2) You can make your own mix and follow any of the core courses and electives that we offer, without following the pre-set training program. This means that you will receive certificates upon completion of the courses, but not qualify for a NIG diploma in the end. Of course, you can change your mind whenever you want. As long as you have completed the 30 EC program you can request a NIG diploma afterwards.

If you wish to attend more courses than the 30 EC, you can! You are not limited to our 30 EC training program making this all-inclusive option really all-inclusive. Moreover, with this membership you get access to all our other activities for free . More about that here .

Apply here for our all-inclusive PhD membership.

Option 2: Pick and choose

With this option you can pick and choose most courses offered by NIG on a one-by-one basis. For some courses there is limited capacity and these will then only be open for PhD-candidates enrolled in the full program.

Course fees are paid per course. Course fees are 100,- per course (1 day) for participants from member institutions and 150,- for third parties. For seminars (3-5 days) there is a fee of 500,- for participants from member institutions and 750,- for third parties. That means that our all-inclusive PhD-membership is usually the cheaper option if you attend more than three courses or combine these with participation .

Once you complete the course, you receive a NIG certificate for that individual course.

We believe enrolling in our all-inclusive training program is worth it because:

  • It helps you develop your PhD-project .

NIG offers a set of courses on key topics (classics, integrity, research design) that help you craft and develop your PhD-project.

  • It helps you to develop as an academic in general

The program helps you develop more broadly as a public administration and/or political science academic researcher, because you get to select from a broad range of types of courses (core, elective and both academic- and professional skills) as well as in content. In this way, you can develop the all-round academic that you want to become.

  • It immerses you in the broad academic community

By joining NIG, you become part of the academic network in public administration and political science in the Netherlands and Flanders. You will meet and interact with top scholars in our field during our courses and make long-lasting connections with peers attending those courses.

  • It offers an internationally accredited post-doctoral degree

If you complete the full program of 30 EC (15 EC core courses and 15 EC electives) you will have an internationally accredited (EAPAA) post-doctoral degree. An increasing amount of our member institutions are recommending (and sometimes requiring) a minimum of 30 EC training program. We help you get that in an accredited way.

  • It is a flexible program

You can enroll in our courses in different years of your PhD. You can also add electives outside of the NIG curriculum to count towards your NIG diploma to really ensure you follow courses that benefit you.

  • It is non-exclusive

Our training program offers many elective courses which we are constantly developing. If you aim to participate in other courses, for instance at your local graduate school or a summer method course, these can be accepted as electives that count towards your NIG diploma.

  • It is field-specific

NIG builds on the joint forces and knowledge of 12 public administration and political science departments. Our curriculum builds on the best and the brightest of our field. All of our courses are developed for and given by academics in our disciplines.

  • It is cost-efficient

If you choose to enroll in the all-inclusive membership option, your institution will pay a modest one-time fee. This will give you access to (1) all of our courses; (2) free participation in our annual work conference; (3) the right to participate in one (or more) or our currently six research colloquia.

PhD Candidate in Political Science (Politics of Climate and Migration)

Updated: 06 Apr 2024

provider logo

  • add to favourites

Key responsibilities We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD researcher to conduct independent research at the Institute of Political Science at Leiden University. Specifically, we invite applicants to develop an innovative PhD proposal on empirical and normative issues around the ‘Climate Migration’ Dilemma (see next section). The PhD project will be supervised by Dr Katharina Natter, Dr Rebecca Ploof and Professor Jan Aart Scholte. Together, we offer comprehensive support, including expertise in comparative politics, political theory and global affairs, methodological guidance, and career development support. Moreover, the Institute offers ample opportunities for presenting your research, gaining experience in organizing academic events, and developing a strong profile for your post-PhD career. PhD candidates receive thorough research training at Leiden University. The PhD position also includes a generous financial package (see terms and conditions below) for fieldwork, conference attendance and training. Candidates are expected to teach two courses per year, usually as tutorial instructor. The ‘Climate Migration’ Dilemma Climate change and migration are among the most pressing challenges of the 21st century in both the Global North and the Global South. While climate activists and migration activists are usually politically aligned, their positions tend to collide on the use of the terms ’climate migration’ and ’climate refugees’. Migration scholars and activists tend to object to such terms. They argue that these terms obscure the complex dynamics of migration, strip people of their agency, and threaten refugees' legal protection under the 1951 UN Geneva Convention In contrast, climate activists and scholars often deploy the terms ‘climate migration’ and ‘climate refugee’ to highlight the extreme migratory repercussions that climate change is expected to generate and to advocate for immediate action to protect the environment. In framing climate migration as an emergency, they regularly resort to rhetoric warnings (e.g. ‘floods of refugees’), commonly used by nationalist and xenophobic actors. This can create an unexpected narrative convergence between climate activists and nationalist far-right actors, who adopt environmental concerns, such as the protection of pure and pristine nature for their own citizens, to back up their traditional, anti-immigration positions. While this political narrative is not mainstream (yet), the repositioning of nationalist, far-right actors on the issue of climate change is likely to gain further ground. Analyzing the political implications and normative risks of the terms ‘climate migration’ and ‘climate refugee’ is thus urgently needed. In this context, we invite prospective PhD candidates to develop a research proposal that empirically studies and normatively reflects on this intersection of migration, environmentalism and nationalism. As a prospective PhD researcher, you are free to propose your own theoretical framework, research design, case selection and methodology depending on your skills and interests, though we have also included some possible lines of inquiry below. Empirically, the project could examine how climate activists, migration activists, and nationalist groups understand, deploy, and mobilize around the term ‘climate migration’. It could delve into the narratives or advocacy strategies of (trans)national organizations (e.g. NGOs, social movements, political parties) and unpack their perceptions of the political opportunities and challenges associated with the term. Conceptually, the project could critically explore normative questions about the risks and rewards of crisis discourse around migration and climate change. The project could put the empirical material c

Requirements:

Selection criteria

  • Applicants show enthusiasm, independence and relevant skills to implement the proposed research project.
  • The proposed research project creatively addresses empirical and normative questions raised by the ‘Climate Migration’ Dilemma.
  • Applicants hold (or are close to completing) a (research) master’s degree in political science or other relevant social science discipline. They have written (or are near to completing) a master’s thesis.
  • Applicants have prior training in and a good command of the methodologies suggested in the research proposal, be they ethnographic, interview-based, quantitative and/or normative.
  • Applicants ideally already have knowledge of interdisciplinary research on issues relevant to their proposal, including migration, climate change, nationalism and/or social movements
  • Applicants meet the English language requirements of the Graduate School of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at Leiden University. Proficiency in other languages relevant for the proposed research project is highly recommended.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an (online) interview in the period 7-15 May.

PhD Candidate in Political Science (Politics of Climate and Migration)

The Institute of Political Science in Leiden University’s Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences invites applications for the position of

PhD Candidate in Political Science (Politics of Climate and Migration) (1.0 FTE) Vacancy number 14512

The project could put the empirical material collected in conversation with, for instance, theoretical analyses of the power of discourse and knowledge; the politics of emergency and ‘exception’; or the anti-democratic impact of depoliticizing climate change.

The ‘cases’ studied could be countries, (transnational) social movements, or specific political actors within or across countries of the Global South and/or Global North. Similarly, a variety of data collection and analysis methods (e.g. participant observation, process tracing, content, discourse or sentiment analysis, semi-structured or life history interviews etc.) could be relevant. We hope that the research design you propose will generate new empirical and normative insights into the interplay between climate activists, migration activists, and anti-migration nationalists – and are looking forward to read your research ideas!
