The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) currently offers 16 Masters programs in partnership with Qatar Scholarships:

The History program intends to train a new generation of Arab researchers in the subject of Arab and Islamic history, building on the knowledge and expertise of notable historians from Arab and Western universities. In the sphere of historical research, this program employs a variety of innovative western theories. The program intends to delve into the depths of the history of Arab countries' economic, political, social, and intellectual institutions, as well as revisit historical events to reinterpret them using innovative research approaches. The program places a premium on studying Arab history in the context of regional and international developments. It also aspires to break new ground by providing courses on current or recent history. The program's overall goal is to emphasize upon pupils the importance of diversifying news sources by exposing them to a variety of Arabic and Western archives. This exposure to structural and relational history will familiarize students with modern historical schools and help them to write Arab history in a new way, contributing to breaking free from tradition and focusing on new methodological frameworks.

The program's goal is to teach a small group of highly trained linguists and lexicographers, with a focus on Arabic language challenges and the study of theoretical and applied linguistics. The program intends to solve the deficiencies in the field of Arabic lexicography through this training.

The program covers all aspects of modern linguistics, including phonology, morphology, lexicon, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, as well as the fundamentals of lexicography and terminology, as well as their applications. The program's structure incorporates an inter-disciplinary approach, with courses in practical linguistics like sociolinguistics, functional linguistics, discourse analysis, philosophy of language, and computational linguistics. Students will be able to choose from a variety of courses.

The curriculum is taught, planned, and administered by professors who are not only well-known in their disciplines, but who have also made significant contributions to theoretical linguistics, Arabic lexicography, and the application of general linguistic knowledge to Arabic language concerns.

The SOC program's goal is to provide advanced theoretical and methodological knowledge in sociology and anthropology to graduate students. The program aims to fulfill its objective by focusing on the critical traditions and schools that form the foundation of sociology and anthropology, as well as their evolution to the current day. The curriculum examines the complexities of interrelationships between local Arab and global contexts, allowing students to perform in-depth and critical study on current social phenomena in Arab and worldwide contexts. From a modern Arab viewpoint, the program strives to add to sociological and anthropological research.

One of the DI's vision pillars is to develop critical knowledge about Arab societies and cultures from unique Arab settings while also aiming for a global knowledge perspective. The SOC program's objectives are drawn from this pillar. They are translated into a study program with the goal of preparing students to be creative and critical scholars, government servants, and professionals in the third and private sectors in their own countries and abroad.

This curriculum seeks to prepare students to conduct academic research with confidence and competence, as well as to understand and apply philosophical theories, concepts, and research methodologies. The program also addresses important philosophical themes and questions, both theoretical and practical.

This program will be offered to students from various disciplines to widen their knowledge and introduce them to new ways of thinking, allowing them to become independent thinkers, in keeping with the DI's goal. Students with these skills will have the courage to ask questions, be intellectually creative, and address cultural and intellectual concerns in the Arab world. This program offers only one emphasis and allows students to select courses that are most relevant to their interests and intellectual inclinations, as well as those that will help them choose a dissertation topic. Students will have exposure to the program's various theoretical and practical aspects if they make this decision.

The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies' Comparative Literature Program is a regional first, intending to interact with the emerging concepts of New Comparative Literature and significant recent debates in the discipline. The Program focuses on recent critical reflections on the discipline's historical formations, as well as the methodological problems of working across languages and cultures, in this regard. This method incorporates knowledge and viewpoints from non-European literary, aesthetic, and critical traditions.

The Program aims to train a new generation of comparative literature scholars, who will be able to situate themselves in the discipline as a new type of Arabist and comparative literary theorist, thanks to its critical humanist and interdisciplinary focus, as well as its uniquely designed core and elective courses.

The course offerings include advanced-level courses that provide instruction in comparative literary theories and interpretive reading modes, as well as novel modalities for transcending language, cultural, literary, and historical boundaries. They also hope to reframe current arguments by introducing particularly developed courses on Arabic literature as a model for non-European literature methods. Other talks will focus on textual processes like as production, reception, and circulation, as well as close reading as an essential tool for analytic engagement with texts.

All of these elements contribute to the Program's uniqueness as a large-scale undertaking, combining cutting-edge theoretical explorations and engagement with contemporary international debates with a specific Arab and regional perspective on comparative literature.

The Politics and International Relations Program strives to contribute to the Institute's main goal of developing competent academics by providing students with the learning tools and information necessary to become outstanding political scientists. It aims to achieve this by providing students with high-quality political science methodological training that meets international standards, as well as the knowledge and skills they need to become independent researchers capable of making original contributions in a variety of fields of political science. In this aspect, the curriculum not only aligns with curricula at the world's most prestigious universities, but also adds a distinctive dimension highlighting Arab contributions and concerns. Furthermore, the Institute's goal of integrating research into teaching and learning is embodied in the approach to teaching and learning in two ways: first, by employing a teaching team of internationally recognized active researchers who are encouraged to maintain and enhance their research output; and second, by employing interactive and participatory teaching methods that actively encourage students to engage in original research. The Institute's emphasis on inter-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary methods is also considered in the program. In this regard, it delivers courses that incorporate interdisciplinary methods in addition to the courses that all students have access to as an interlocution to methodology in the Social Sciences and Humanities. It makes these courses open to students from other programs as electives, and it encourages its students to take electives from other programs when it is judged beneficial to their specialty.

The program is aimed to help students gain a better knowledge of modern political science while also improving their methodological competence and learning skills. Students will develop analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as advanced research and writing skills, by interacting with significant disputes in modern political philosophy. Students will be critically aware of the key concerns and competing viewpoints in contemporary political theory at the end of the course, and will be able to demonstrate critical-analytical skills in applying theories to modern Arab and Middle Eastern politics. Students should also be encouraged to challenge and enhance accepted worldwide techniques with regard to Arab realities, using their own knowledge and insights on the challenges, as part of the program's distinctive training. As a result, there is a solid theoretical foundation as well as practical application.

The Media Studies program intends to rethink the role of media in the Arab world and to deepen media studies debates at all levels. This program will train the next generation of high-caliber Arab media and culture studies academics, in line with the Doha Institute's aim of merging teaching and research to better prepare its graduates to become academic researchers and capable professionals.

Overall, the curriculum places a strong emphasis on research training to prepare students to conduct empirical and policy-driven research on Arab media production, cultures, and institutions. Research methodology, media theory, media representation, Arab media cultures, visual culture, media audiences and users, the political economy of mass media, and media ethics and law are just a few of the topics covered in the program. The program's cross-disciplinary courses help students get a wide understanding of important social science and humanities subject fields.

The Journalism program aspires to produce a generation of highly talented, morally grounded Arab journalists who are both aware of current societal trends and capable of working successfully in multiplatform news contexts. The program stresses journalistic ideals of neutrality, independence, truth, and fairness while emphasizing technical and professional journalistic skills. Research Project Outline

Project title: developing load time series analysis and forecasting methods.

This project involves developing load time series using historical data and real-time information from sources like smart meters. The candidate will analyse the obtained data.

  • Signal processing tools in both the time domain and frequency domain, such as volatility analysis tools in the time and frequency domain.
  • Artificial intelligence tools, such as recent versions of deep neural networks.

The HDR candidate should be able to develop a tool based on data mining and deep learning technologies that can accurately predict electric load using historical load data and other relevant influencing factors. The tool should be able to generate multi-step-ahead load forecasts in the presence of electric vehicle parking lots and distributed energy resources, which is crucial in the planning and operation of today electric power utilities.

Eligibility: Electrical or Computer Engineering Degree with good mathematical and programming skills. Student from Applied Mathematics are also encouraged to apply.

Project title: Bi-level uncertainty-aware DER aggregation planning tool

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) may not fully benefit the power system if they act independently. Additionally, their uncertain and conflicting interactions may even harm the system. Moreover, their uncertainties may cause the system operating conditions to deviate from the planned conditions, resulting in a suboptimal or even infeasible system operating point. In this project, the prospective HDR candidate addresses these essential requirements by optimizing the aggregation of DERs while considering their various relevant uncertainties.

Eligibility: Electrical Engineering Degree with good mathematical and programming skills.

Project: An Ethics of Love: Iris Murdoch's Moral Philosophy

"Best known as a novelist, Iris Murdoch was also an insightful moral philosopher. She argued that ethical thinking begins with the stories that we tell and accept. These stories make certain ethically significant concepts available to us while occluding others. She holds that moral philosophy, done well, expands our conceptual repertoire, allowing us to see reality more clearly. In her view love is the most central moral concept: love of others, rather than merely choosing and acting well, is the most important moral task. I am working on a monograph that brings Murdoch into conversation with contemporary moral philosophy and ethical theory. The book includes chapters on ethical concepts, narrative and justification, freedom, value, ideals, God, love, and moral community."

Project: Feeling Like the Global South: Recoding Digital Bahdala in the MENA

"My research offers bahdala— the Arabic word for a humbling ridicule—as an emotions framework for the underlying economy of the Internet. I argue that a rising entrepreneurial class across the MENA channels spectacles of shame online, gaining capital in global market economies that cause bahdala in the first place. For publics across Lebanon and Egypt invested in global inclusion, encounters on platforms forge a geopolitical, nation-based Global South which is at odds with a postnational Global South consciousness."

This project will analyze the music of noted Brazilian heavy metal musician Max Cavalera and identify how political themes developed throughout his career. Expanding on existing scholarship covering his influential band, Sepultura, this project will examine his entire career with a focus on his work after leaving Sepultura and his immigration to the United States.

Project: Madea’s Baby, Tyler’s Maybe: Tyler Perry on Stage and in Film, 1997-2019

"Madea’s Baby, Tyler’s Maybe analyzes the first twenty years of media mogul Tyler Perry’s career. I employ a media studies-centered, yet rigorously interdisciplinary approach to Perry, and to the overlapping historical, industrial, and cultural roots of his success. My book mobilizes Perry’s elder drag character 'Madea' as the complex locus of his dynasty, mapping his attempts to channel and control this powerful matriarchal figure—across time and space; through distinct media formats; alongside Perry’s own aging; and coeval with transformations in mainstream and public discourses on gender and sexuality."

Project: In the Frame: Organizing and Delimiting the Moving Image from Virtual Reality to Cinema

"My book explores the ways in which the rise of virtual reality enables us to reassess the concept of the frame and the practice of framing in moving-image media. Drawing on an interdisciplinary discourse on frames and framing, I advocate conceptualizing the mediatic frame not as a delimited view but rather, more expansively, as the frame of reference for a range of processes of organization and delimitation operating across formal, material, and social registers."

Project: Conditions of Meaning: An Ethnography of Mind-Body Illness

This book project asks the question, what if we take seriously the idea that idiom, story, and script shape the experience of body and the course of illness? Engaging that question, this project draws on the layered stories of people’s intimate experiences with Functional Neurological Disorder—a surprisingly common, yet enigmatic illness with symptoms that mimic those of other neurological disorders but without discernible organic cause. The book coalesces around a number of critical themes, including: gender and power, bodily languages of protest, medical discourses and moral personhood, social scaffolding of sensation, bodily affordances, and embodied metaphor. Tracing the vivid personal accounts of people living with a disorder often dismissed as “all in their heads,” this project seeks to create a broader understanding of how we listen to and make meaning of our bodies.

Charif Shanahan

Assistant Professor, Department of English

Project: Dear Whiteness: Poems

Dear Whiteness is a book-length series of epistolary poems. Epic in scope and global in orientation and form, the poems move episodically across time and space—from the 7th Century Arab Slave Trade in the Maghreb to the contemporary Bronx—comprising traditional lyric and poetic erasures of legal texts, racial taxonomies, and slave narratives. Choral, with many “authors,” both historical and imagined, the letters-as-poem interrogate where racial constructs fall apart—the edges, the liminal spaces without a name or familiar narrative—in terms of both mixed-race embodiment and experience, as well as cultural contradiction. By demonstrating how racial constructs exist to preserve and protect the existence of Whiteness, broadly construed, across national context and period, the poems articulate the imaginative possibilities of inhabiting a racial liminality.

Project: Pens and Needles: Toni Morrison, Quilts, and Community

Tracy Vaughn-Manley’s current book project, Pens and Needles: Toni Morrison, Quilts, and Community , is a study on the ways in which Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison uses quilts and quilting in her work as an editor, author, and public scholar.  Drawing upon current theories of resistance, Black feminism, performance, and cultural aesthetics, Vaughn-Manley demonstrates how these theories intersect and illuminate the importance of quilts, quilt-making, and community building in Morrison’s work.

Project: Bluster: Bourgeois Anxiety and Expository Style in Late Nineteenth-Century Germany

"My project investigates a strangely dominant, yet largely unexamined tone in mid- to late nineteenth-century German literature: a paradoxical combination of bombast, avuncularity, belligerence, and petulance that I, taking a cue from an early book review by Friedrich Nietzsche, designate with the name “bluster.” Through readings of particular works of popular philosophy and the both stylistic and thematic debates that they provoked (as well as some fictional examples), I explore the implications of this tone as simultaneously a form of self-legitimation and a response to a legitimation crisis: the expression of masculine bourgeois fragility in the age of the bourgeoisie’s supposed triumph."
