Endangered Species

  • ENDANGERED SPECIES
  • Elephants. Tigers. Gorillas. Pandas. Blue Whales. What do these amazing creatures have in common? They are some of the biggest, coolest, and most loved animals on the planet. They are all also endangered species.
  • An animal or plant is  endangered  when there are so few left alive on the planet that the entire species is in danger of vanishing forever. When a species is completely gone—and not a single one survives anywhere on Earth—it is considered  extinct . Unfortunately,   one out of every eight species of birds, one in four mammals, one in three amphibians, and one in five plants are endangered.

PROTECTING GIANT PANDAS

  • increasing the area of panda habitat under legal protection
  • creating green corridors to link isolated pandas
  • patrolling against poaching , illegal logging ( deforestation ) and encroachment (population overtaking animals habitat).
  • building local capacities for nature reserve management
  • continuing research and monitoring
  • WWF has been helping with the Chinese government’s National Conservation Program for the giant panda and its habitat. Thanks to this program, panda reserves now cover more than 3.8 million acres of forest.
  • HABITAT LOSS (deforestation, pollution, encroachment)
  • China’s Yangtze Basin region, which holds the panda’s primary habitat, is the geographic and economic heart of this booming country. Roads and railroads are increasingly fragmenting the forest, which isolates panda populations and prevents mating.
  • Forest destruction also reduces pandas’ access to the bamboo they need to survive. The Chinese government has established more than 50 panda reserves, but only around 61% of the country’s panda population is protected by these reserves.
  • HUNTING and POACHING
  • Hunting remains an ever-present threat. Poaching the animals for their fur, has declined due to strict laws and greater public awareness of the panda’s protected status . But hunters seeking other animals in panda habitats continue to kill pandas accidentally.
  • But other animal poaching is on the rise. rhino’s horns, elephant’s ivory tusks, shark’s fins , and other animals parts are sold as medicine or luxury items (jewelry, rugs, and trophies)

  • PROTECTING SPECIES, WHAT WE CAN DO!
  • We protect wildlife because they inspire us. But we also focus our efforts on those species—like tigers, rhinos, whales and marine turtles—whose protection influences and supports the survival of other species or offers the opportunity to protect whole landscapes or marine areas.
  • Do not support animal poaching by buying products from endangered species or posing for pictures with questionable animals.
  • Ask questions from people that are selling questionable products. Many people may not realize that some products come from endangered animals. Be careful and do not take the law into your own hands.
  • Support wildlife foundations, donate money.
  • Increase public awareness of illegal products, animal cruelty, questionable wildlife entertainment by telling friends and family and using social media to spread the word.

Endangered Species An  endangered species  is a  species  of  organisms  facing a very high risk of  extinction.

Philippine Eagle The  Philippine Eagle  (Pithecophaga jefferyi), also known as the  Monkey-eating Eagle,

is an eagle of the family  Accipitridaeendemic  to forests in the  Philippines. It has brown and white-coloured plumage, and a shaggy crest, and generally measures 86 to 102 cm (2.82 to 3.35 ft) in length and weighs 4.7 to 8.0 kilograms (10 to 18 lb). It is considered the

largest of the extant eagles in the world in terms of length. Among the rarest and most powerful birds  in the world, it has been declared the Philippine  national bird. It is  critically endangered, mainly due to massive loss of habitat due to deforestation in most of its range.

Killing a Philippine Eagle is punishable under Philippine law by 12 years in jail and heavy fines. The Philippine Eagle is  endemic  to the Philippines  and can be found on four major islands: eastern Luzon,  Samar,  Leyte, and  Mindanao. The complete breeding cycle of the Philippine Eagle

lasts two years. The female matures sexually at five years of age and the male at seven. Once paired, a couple remains together for the rest of their lives. If one dies, the remaining eagle often searches for a new mate to replace the one lost. The Philippine Eagle was

known initially as the Philippine Monkey-Eating Eagle because it was believed to feed on monkeys (the only monkey native to the Philippines is the  Philippine long-tailed macaque) almost exclusively; this has proven to be inaccurate. Like most predators, the Philippine

Eagle is an opportunist that takes prey based on its local level of abundance and ease. It is the  apex predator  in its range. The primary prey varies from island to island depending on species availability, particularly in Luzon and Mindanao, because the islands

are in different faunal regions. The primary prey for the eagles seen in Luzon are monkeys, birds, flying foxes, giant cloud-rats Phloeomys pallidus. Philippine Eagles primarily use two hunting techniques. One is still-hunting, eagles seen in Luzon are in which it watches for prey activity

while sitting almost motionlessly on a branch near the canopy. The other is perch-hunting, which entails periodically gliding from one perch to another. By: Wikipedia The free Encyclopedia

Philippine Tarsier The  Philippine tarsier (Tarsius syrichta), known locally as mawmag  in  Cebuano/Visayan

and mamag in Luzon, is a species of tarsierendemic to the Philippines. It is found in the southeastern part of the archipelago, particularly on the islands of  Bohol, Samar, Leyte and  Mindanao. It is a member of the approximately 45 -million-year-old family

Tarsiidae, whose name is derived from its elongated "tarsus" or ankle bone. It is the only member of the genus  Carlito, after the species was removed from the genus  Tarsius. The new genus was named after Carlito Pizarras, known as the tarsier man, the field manager at the Philippine

Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary on the island of Bohol. Pizarras is a long-time champion of tarsier conservation in the Philippines. Its geographic range also includes  Maripipi Island,  Siargao Island,  Basilan Island and Dinagat Island. It was only introduced toWestern biologists in the 18th century.

The Philippine tarsier is not a large animal; it measures only about 85 to 160 millimetres (3.35 to 6.30 in) in height, making it one of the smallest primates. The mass for males is between 80–160  g (2.8–5.6  oz), usually lighter for females, somewhat heavier than other. The average adult is about the size of a human fist and will fit

very comfortably in the human hand. Like all tarsiers, the Philippine tarsier's  eyes  are fixed in its  skull; they cannot turn in their sockets. Instead, a special adaptation in the neck allows its round head to be rotated 180 degrees. The eyes are disproportionately

large, having the largest eye-to-body somewhat heavier than other size ratio of all mammals. In Bohol, the Philippine tarsier was a common sight in the southern part of the island until the 1960s. These huge eyes provide this nocturnal animal with excellent night vision. The large membranous ears are

mobile,  appearing to be almost constantly moving, allowing the tarsier to hear any movement. For the past 45 million years, tarsiers have inhabited rainforests around the world, but now they only exist on a few islands in the Philippines, Borneo and Indonesia. Since then, the number has dropped to around 700 on the island according to the

Philippine Tarsier Foundation. Once protected by the humid rainforests and mist-shrouded hills, these mysterious primates struggle to survive as their home is cleared for crop growing. Due to the quickly growing human population, which causes more and more forests to be converted to farmland,

housing areas and roads, the place where the Philippine tarsier can live its secluded life is disappearing. Along this line, the dwindling of Philippine forests has posed a grave and significant threat to the survival of the Philippine tarsier because this results in the destruction of its natural forest habitat. Indiscriminate and illegal.

Visayan Spotted Deer The deer is small and short-legged yet it is the largest  endemicspecies of deer among the Visayas.

Adults range from 125 to 130 cm (49 to 51 in) long from the head to the base of the tail, 70 to 80 cm (28 to 31 in) in shoulder height and 25 to 80 kg (55 to 180 lb) in weight. This species is easily distinguished from other species of deer in the Philippines by the distinctive "A" pattern of beige spots which dot its deep brown back and sides.

Other distinctive features include cream underparts and white fur on the chin and lower lip. The animal's head and neck are brown, but lighter than the body, and the eyes are ringed with paler fur. Males are larger than females and have short, thick, bumpy antlers. The deer breed from November to December, although mating

could begin earlier. Males have a roaring call to attract females. Calves are born after a  gestation  period of around 240 days. Weaning takes place at six months and the calves are mature from 12 months. Sales of venison to local markets and speciality restaurants, and live trapping for the pet trade have all contributed to the species'

dwindling numbers. Isolation and reduction of population is likely to have led to some herds becoming moribund. While cross-breeding with  R. mariannus  has been observed in captivity, the lack of a common range means this is unlikely to be a problem in the wild. Due to the severe pressures faced

by the deer, the  IUCN  has twice listed it as an  endangered species: firstly in 1994 (when it was de-listed within the year) and again in 1996 (which listing has continued until the present). The limited numbers of the animal in the wild (at least 300, down from almost 1,600) has led to the belief that prospects for its survival are bleak.

The species' range once covered the shoreline up to at least 2,000  m above sea level. Its habitat is in dense  cogon  grassland, and primary and secondary forest. Most of its habitat consists of areas where its diet of young shoots of cogon grass and young low-growing leaves and buds are plentiful.

Besides areas that are dense in vegetation, it could also thrive in places it could  graze They may also visit burnt-out forest clearings for the floral  ash. Due to the now restricted range of the deer, it is impossible to ascertain the preferred habitat of the species.

Philippine Hawk Eagle The Philippine Hawk Eagle (Nisaetus philippensis with earlier name as Spizaetus philippensis) belongs to a

species of bird of prey in the Accipitridae family same as Philippine Eagle. This hawk eagle is endemic to Philippines and lives in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest which is now considered bu IUCN as vulnerable due to loss of habitat and hunting.

The size of hawk eagle is about 65-70 cm with long crest of four to five feathers, up to 7 cm long, protruding from its crown. The plumage on the upper parts is dark brown, and the dark brown tail is striped with four to five darker, narrow bands.

The head and underparts are reddish-brown with black streaking, and the throat is whitish. The wings are broad and rounded and barred flight feathers can be seen in flight. An estimated of 1000 to 2500 hawk eagle were remained in the whole Philippine

archipelago and the trend is decreasing. Conservation measures are being implemented numerous protected areas, including Mts Isarog and Makiling National Parks, the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park and Bataan Natural Park/Subic Bay on Luzon, Mt Canlaon on Negros,

and Mt Kitanglad and Mt Apo Natural Parks and Mt Malindang on Mindanao, and Rajah Sikatuna National Park on Bohol and recently on Mount Irid-Angilo-Binuang of the Southern Sierra Madre in Luzon.

Deforestation for plantation agriculture, livestock and logging throughout its extensive, predominantly lowland range is the chief threat. Habitat loss is exacerbated by considerable hunting and trapping pressure. The species strongholds appear to

be Luzon and Mindanao where 200-220 pairs and 320-340 pairs respectively were recently estimated. Therefore, the global population is probably best placed in the band 1,000-2,499 individuals. This equates to 667-1,666 mature individuals, rounded here to 600-1,700 mature individuals.

Visayan Warty Pigs One of the most endangered species of wild pig, the Visayan warty pig occupies only 5% of its original range.

The Visayan warty pig, like many island species, is relatively small in size when compared to other wild pigs. They stand 2½ to 3 feet tall. Males (boars) are much larger than females (sows). Their long, mobile, disk-like snout helps them root around in the earth for their favorite foods.

The males possess large canines that protrude from their mouth as tusks. They have a prominent line of white fur across the snout that extends along the sides of the ose a threat by interbreeding with wild Visayan Warty Pigs, producing genetically hybridized offspring.

ted populations on two Philippine islands. Threats to their existence include habitat destruction, population fragmentation, persecution as a result of their crop raiding habits, and hunting by locals for food. Domestic pig populations also pose a threat by interbreeding with wild

Visayan Warty Pigs, producing genetically hybridized offspring. Visayan warty pigs are considered critically endangered. The Philippine government has established rescue and breeding centers to

help preserve these beautiful animals. Regulations are in place but enforcement is difficult. Visayan warty pigs presently live on two Visayan islands located in the central Philippines: Panay Island and Negros Island.

They live in dense, tropical rain forests where rainfall may reach 94 inches per year. e most pigs, Visayan warty pigs are omnivorous, which means they will eat just about anything.ng.Visayan warty pig breeding starts from November to February or March.

Celebration and Reflection on Endangered Species Day

Pink flowers of Nelson's checker-mallow

If you’ve seen it, you probably know Nelson’s checker-mallow. Its  beautiful pink flowers brighten the Pacific Northwest starting in May and through the summer.

You now have a better chance of seeing this plant, too. On April 27, 2022, we announced that the checker-mallow no longer needed special protection and proposed removing it from the Endangered Species list.

We worked with local communities, state and federal agencies, Tribes, conservation groups, and private-sector partners to give the prairie plant the habitat it needs.

It is this kind of conservation success we celebrate on Endangered Species Day, but we can’t have blinders on.

We take pride that more than 99% of all species protected under the Endangered Species Act in its nearly 50 years are still with us.

But we cannot rest on those laurels.

The world faces a crisis of extinction. Climate change has added threats like sea level rise and exacerbated existing ones such as habitat loss.

As we celebrate the proposal to delist Nelson’s checker-mallow, we must also acknowledge proposals to list prostrate milkweed and Sacramento Mountains checkerspot butterfly.

The Biden-Harris administration’s America the Beautiful initiative will help. The initiative is a 10-year, locally led and voluntary campaign to conserve, connect, and restore 30% of the nation's lands and waters by 2030. One of its goals is to sustain our nation’s fish and wildlife.

And we must continue enlisting diverse partners in conservation efforts when we use the Endangered Species Act to protect a species and in a proactive bid to ensure a species’ future before ESA action becomes necessary.

Today, we honor the 2021 Recovery Champions , staff and partners working tirelessly to advance the recovery of endangered and threatened species of plants and animals.

In the Endangered Species Act of 1973, Congress wrote that endangered and threatened “species of fish, wildlife, and plants are of esthetic, ecological, educational, historical, recreational, and scientific value to the Nation and its people.”

More on Endangered Species : Curious Critters and Why We Care

We won’t be deprived of Nelson’s checker-mallow’s value anytime soon. But the extinction crisis is unlikely to disappear. Our work is more needed than ever.

U.S. states with the most and least endangered species

According to the u.s. environmental protection agency, protecting endangered species is important because all living beings, including people, depend on other species for survival..

powerpoint presentation on endangered species

With over 1,300 endangered or threatened species in the United States today, newly compiled data shows the states with the most number of vulnerable populations.

Outforia — an online resource for outdoor recreation that aims to “empower people to connect with nature” with “trusted” reviews, “best local guides and leading regional knowledge” — revealed the state rankings for most endangered species on record in a new report , which was based on data from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FSW).

The report only includes species with a Spatial Current Range in the FSW’s Environmental Conservation Online System (ECOS).

“As the Endangered Species Act (ESA) turns 50 this year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the conservation efforts made and the work still needed to protect the most vulnerable species in the U.S.”  the company said in a statement.

Adopted under President Richard Nixon's administration in 1973, the act was intended to provide a way to protect and preserve ecosystems and a program to conserve and restore threatened and endangered species.

Forests, swamplands, deserts, grasslands, and coastal salt marshes are some of the habitats that play an important part in providing shelter, food sources, and breeding grounds for many species.

Use the interactive map to learn more about each state's number of endangered species and notable species on record.

Hawaii’s chain of volcanic islands, which host more endangered species than any other state, are home to some notable endangered species, including the Hawaiian petrel, also called the ʻuaʻu, and the crested honeycreeper, or 'Ākohekohe.

California’s wide range of coastal, desert and forests habitats make the second state with the most endangered species a “biodiversity hotspot,” according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Another chart shows the number of species deemed threatened or endangered in the U.S. over 56 years, based on data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service .

The status of a species may have changed after it is listed, either from threatened to endangered or from endangered to threatened; or a species may have been delisted.

The Ever-Resilient Pupfish Makes a Comeback in Death Valley

The spring population of the critically endangered species is at a 25-year high, a surprising rebound in a tiny desert cave.

A Devils Hole pupfish, a small, blue fish, in an area of water that's also filled with a mat of green cyanobacteria algae.

By Alexander Nazaryan

When it comes to sheer resilience, few, if any, species can match the tiny Devils Hole pupfish.

Cyprinodon diabolis , as the species is known, has the most ruthlessly circumscribed natural habitat of any vertebrate: Devils Hole , an exceptionally deep, water-filled cave in a limestone formation in the unforgiving Nevada desert, where the fish mostly stay on a rock shelf little more than 200 square feet. Not only that, but the pupfish are believed to be one of the most inbred of all species , a lack of genetic variation that makes it difficult for the creatures to procreate and thrive.

And yet, improbably, Devils Hole pupfish are thriving. Late last month, the National Park Service announced that the spring population of the species had grown to 191 , the highest in 25 years, according to a count conducted twice a year by scuba divers. Because of seasonal fluctuations in food sources, fall counts tend to be higher, meaning that this year’s tally could be a watershed.

“If, this fall, we have over 300, I’ll be really ecstatic,” said Kevin Wilson, an aquatic ecologist at the National Park Service who has studied the Devils Hole pupfish for more than two decades. (Devils Hole is officially part of Death Valley National Park , most of which is in California.)

If the pupfish census does not seem especially impressive, consider that there were only 35 pupfish left in Devils Hole in 2013, prompting worries about extinction. For now, that danger has receded ever so slightly.

“This is a tremendous success story,” said Christopher Martin , an evolutionary biologist and pupfish expert at the University of California, Berkeley. “Ten years ago, we couldn’t have expected this level of success.”

Biologists have been feeding the pupfish frozen food to supplement their regular diet of algae since 2007. In 2019, the biologists finally arrived at the optimal formula of mysid shrimp, water fleas and blood worms. “This change in the supplemental food probably did enhance that increase in population numbers we’re seeing,” Dr. Wilson said.

Hurricane Hilary, which hit last summer, also helped. Even though the storm caused flooding and damage to the park , it benefited the pupfish living in Devils Hole by “adding nutrients that washed off the surrounding land surface in a fine layer of clay and silt,” according to the National Park Service.

The tiny pupfish, usually about an inch in size, is believed to have lived in Devils Hole for at least 10,000 years and probably much longer, Dr. Martin said. Its name alludes to a playful, puppylike disposition.

How the pupfish ended up in the Nevada desert is not known for certain. Much of Nevada was once underwater . The waters eventually receded, but somehow the pupfish found a refuge in the vast expanse of scrubland and sand.

To this day, no person is known to have completed an exploration of the lowest depths of Devils Hole, which is hundreds of feet deep. (A submersible would never fit into the narrow cavern, Dr. Wilson said.) In a notorious accident in 1965, two young men died during a dive in Devils Hole .

Not much for deepwater exploration, the pupfish stay at depths of 80 feet or less. There, the temperature is 93 degrees Fahrenheit, potentially even hotter near the surface.

Because the pupfish are effectively perched on a shallow underwater ledge, changes to the water table can harm prospects for survival. Dr. Wilson worries that the profusion of enormous solar panel farms in the surrounding desert could drastically increase water usage, damaging the delicate Amargosa River system . Mining is booming again in Nevada. Pahrump, a desert town near Ash Meadows, has seen its population explode .

“There’s increasing pressure on groundwater,” Dr. Wilson said. A well could inadvertently tap the Devils Hole aquifer, causing a drastic drop in the water level there.

Perhaps the greatest danger to the species is its lack of genetic diversity, which increases the incidence of harmful genetic mutations and thus makes it harder for the population to grow. In a classic Catch-22, the pupfish have only one way of inbreeding less: by growing their population.

To prepare for potential catastrophe, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been breeding Devils Hole pupfish in captivity since 2013. Introducing bred pupfish into Devils Hole is unfeasible for a variety of reasons, but should something happen to the wild pupfish, the species will live on.

For now, however, the wild pupfish are hanging on in Devils Hole. Christopher Norment, a vertebrate ecologist and the author of “Relicts of a Beautiful Sea,” a book about Death Valley, said that although he was “somewhat jaundiced” about the long-term prospects of the Devils Hole pupfish, he was impressed by its tenacity.

“It’s the story of survival in the face of overwhelming odds,” he said.

The U.S. House voted Tuesday to end federal protection for gray wolves, approving a bill that would remove them from the endangered species list across the lower 48 states.

A handful of Democrats joined with Republicans in passing the bill. The measure now goes to the Senate, but it appears doomed after the White House issued a statement Monday warning that the Biden administration opposes it. Congress shouldn’t play a role in determining whether a species has recovered, the statement said.

The Republican-authored bill comes amid national debate on the wolves’ future. Hunters and farmers across the country maintain the species is stable and have been complaining for years about wolf attacks on game species and livestock. They want to be allowed to legally kill the animals.

Conservationists insist the population remains fragile after being hunted to near-extinction by the 1960s.

In 2011 Congress stripped Endangered Species Act protection from gray wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains and the Trump administration removed protections across the rest of the continental U.S. in 2020. However, a federal judge blocked the change except in the northern Rocky Mountains. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service this past February rejected requests from conservation groups to restore protections in that six-state Rockies region, allowing Idaho, Montana and Wyoming’s state-sponsored wolf hunts to continue. The agency estimated the wolf population in the region at almost 3,000 animals at the end of 2022.

Wolves aren’t considered threatened in Alaska — the population there stands at between 7,000 and 11,000 animals — and they aren’t found in Hawaii. There were an estimated about 8,000 animals across the lower 48 states in 2022, according to a compilation of wildlife agency data by the Wolf Conservation Center.

Republicans argued wolves have clearly recovered and ending protections should be celebrated as a conservation success.

Democrats countered that the species still needs help. They said if protections are lifted, hunters will again push wolves to near extinction.

“Passing this bill would simply call the wolves recovered, but that does not make it so,” said Rep. Jared Huffman, a California Democrat.

Rep. Cliff Bentz, an Oregon Republican, said wolves are “natural born killers” and that conservationists have no idea what it’s like for farmers and ranchers to get up in the middle of the night to deal with wolf attacks on their livestock.

The House approved the bill 209-205. Four Democrats sided with Republicans voting for the bill, including Yadira Caraveo of Colorado, Henry Cueller of Texas, Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington state.

Scientists find ancient, endangered lamprey fish in Queensland, 1400 km north of its previous known range

The Australian brook lamprey ( Mordacia praecox ) is part of a group of primitive jawless fish. It's up to 15 cm long, with rows of sharp teeth. Surprisingly, it doesn't use these teeth to suck blood like most lamprey species -- it's non-parasitic.

As larvae, the Australian brook lamprey lives buried in the bottom of streams for around three years, filter-feeding. Its adult phase is about one year long, in which it doesn't feed at all. Prior to this study -- funded in part by the Australian Government through the National Environmental Science Program's (NESP) Resilient Landscapes Hub -- the species was widely believed to only live in a few streams along a 170 km stretch of coastline near the NSW/Victoria border.

The study began after another exciting discovery: Dr Luke Carpenter-Bundhoo from the Australian Rivers Institute at Griffith University found the species living in streams on K'gari (Fraser Island). To unravel the mystery of Queensland lampreys, Dr Carpenter-Bundhoo teamed up with David Moffatt from DESI, who had found isolated populations of lamprey in other Queensland streams.

Together, they confirmed reports of Australian brook lamprey in Queensland, including as far north as Rockhampton! With this enormous extension of its geographic range, Australian brook lamprey becomes the only lamprey species in the world to live in truly tropical waters.

"It's quite exciting to find an Endangered species so far out of its known range, yet so close to populated areas. We expect these animals naturally occur in Queensland, and have been here for an awfully long time, but have remained hidden due to their cryptic nature," said Mr Moffatt.

The Australian brook lamprey is thought to be extinct where it was first described, in southern NSW. Its existence is thought to be threatened by sedimentation, wildfires, and human developments.

Perhaps the biggest threat to their conservation is that they're very difficult to identify -- this species truly faces a case of mistaken identity. For most of their life, the non-parasitic Australian brook lamprey is indistinguishable from its more common blood-sucking southern relative, the short-headed lamprey (Mordacia mordax), which has a conservation status of 'Least Concern'.

Add to this the fact that, globally, only a few people can tell them apart.

In their new Endangered Species Research article, Dr Carpenter-Bundhoo and Mr Moffatt outline the difficulties of implementing a conservation strategy for this fish and propose some solutions.

The species' conservation is especially important, given projected sea levels rises mean that many of the lowland freshwater coastal streams where Australian brook lamprey live are likely to become saltwater.

With these new findings, scientists will be better equipped to conserve this unusual and Endangered species.

The surveys were partially funded by a NESP project which aims to restore ecosystem health in the Moonaboola (Mary River) catchment area of south-east Queensland and protect threatened species like the Australian lungfish, the Mary River cod and the giant barred frog.

Find a mysterious box on the beach in Texas? Scientists say it has to do with sea turtles

powerpoint presentation on endangered species

Have you been hanging out on Texas beaches and seen some strange objects wash up on the shore?

Are they orange or green-painted blocks? Well, there’s a scientific reason they’re there.

Mysterious boxes are washing up on Texas beaches

According to Chron.com , seemingly mysterious orange-painted blocks with notes attached to them have been washing onto beaches along the Gulf Coast.

Scientists with the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries division released 80 wooden "effigy drifters" from Chandeleur Island, Louisiana, into the northern Gulf of Mexico to help track the movements of stunned sea turtles.

The wooden blocks, which are modeled after sea turtles, are spray-painted neon green, orange, pink, or yellow. They have a GPS device attached and a phone number to call if beachgoers find one. More than half of the effigies are headed to the Texas coast.

Dead sea turtles often wash up on U.S. beaches, and NOAA classifies the creatures as endangered .

Why are sea turtles endangered?

According to the Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire , six of the seven sea turtle species are classified as threatened or endangered due to human actions and lifestyles.

Here are some reasons listed:

  • Fisheries: Sea turtles virtually everywhere are affected by fisheries, especially longlines, gill nets and trawls. The most severe of these impacts are death after entanglement, habitat destruction and food web changes.
  • Direct take: Sea turtles and their eggs are killed by people throughout the world for food and for products including oil, leather and shell.
  • Coastal development: Sea turtle habitats are degraded and destroyed by coastal development. This includes both shoreline and seafloor alterations, such as nesting beach degradation, seafloor dredging, vessel traffic, construction and alteration of vegetation.
  • Pollution: Plastics, discarded fishing gear, petroleum by-products, and other debris harm and kill sea turtles through ingestion and entanglement. Light pollution disrupts nesting behavior and causes hatchling death by leading them away from the sea. Chemical pollutants can weaken sea turtles’ immune systems, making them susceptible to disease.
  • Climate change: Climate change will increase the frequency of extreme weather events, result in loss of nesting beaches, and cause other alterations to critical sea turtle habitats and basic oceanographic processes. It might affect natural sex ratios of hatchlings and increase the likelihood of disease outbreaks for sea turtles.

What to do if you see effigies on the beach

The Gulf center is collecting any of the effigies that wash up on the upper Texas coast and is asking anyone who comes across one to take photos, note the location and contact the sea turtle hotline at 1-866-TURTLE-5 to arrange a drop-off location.

If the drifting blocks are observed floating in the water, NOAA says to leave them be and not disturb them unless instructed otherwise by NOAA. As of Sunday, at least four of the devices have been found in the Galveston area where the center is located.

Endangered Species Act co-author dies at 96

By Robin Bravender | 05/09/2024 01:27 PM EDT

Former California Rep. Pete McCloskey helped organize the first Earth Day and enact the nation’s landmark endangered species law.

Former Rep. Pete McCloskey, shown at his law office in Redwood City, California, on March 16, 2006, died Wednesday at age 96. McCloskey was a pro-environment, anti-war lawmaker who co-authored the federal Endangered Species Act and co-founded Earth Day. Jeff Chiu, File/AP

When a Democratic senator was on the hunt for a Republican to help organize the first Earth Day in 1970, he found California Rep. Paul “Pete” McCloskey.

“He couldn’t find a Republican in Congress who was interested, except for me,” McCloskey told The Arizona Republic in an interview years later.

The former Republican lawmaker, who died this week at age 96, was known for working across the aisle on environmental issues, notably on Earth Day and on the landmark Endangered Species Act. McCloskey died Wednesday of congestive heart failure at his home in Winters, California, according to his law firm Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy.

McCloskey signed up to help Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Gaylord Nelson organize that first Earth Day in April 1970.
