Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) - Statistics & Facts

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), owned by William Morris Endeavor and presided over by Dana White, is a mixed martial arts promotion company which hosts events worldwide since November 12, 1993. The company's brand value has drastically improved in recent years, having increased by 335 percent in a single year, which relates to the sport having gained popularity caused in part by interest in specific star fighters such as Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey. The drastic growth of the company catapulted the UFC among the most valuable sports business brands worldwide . The match between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz at UFC 202 on August 20, 2016 pulled in an all time high, at the time, of the leading buy-rates of UFC pay-per-view events with a total of 1.65 million pay-per-view buys. It was later superseded by UFC 229 - Khabib vs Conor on October 6th 2018, reaching 2.4 million pay-per-view buys. The average number of pay-per-view buys fluctuated significantly with 2018 having an average of roughly 447 thousand buys per event. In America the prime segment of fans appear to be middle aged, between the age of 30 and 49 years or younger, as reflected in the share of Americans who watched a pay-per-view event or the proportion of Americans who visited UFC.com . The highest live attendance at events was seen at UFC 193 - Roussey vs Holm on November 14th 2015 with a total of 56,214 attendees. The 39 UFC events of 2018 featured 474 fights , of which in recent years around 145 ended in knockouts and roughly 90 ended in submission. The most popular type of submission in the UFC is the rear naked choke. Georges St-Pierre currently holds the record for most takedowns in UFC fights as well as most strikes landed . Ufc's presentation has been stale for years.

Despite record-breaking gates and viewership, UFC has a major issue in how bland, stale and unimaginative its presentation and marketing have become.

  • UFC's live entertainment energy rivals top sports leagues, but lacks in marketing and presentation creativity.
  • Missing out on gripping daily content and dynamic marketing, UFC leans towards outdated promotional strategies.
  • With new competition like Saudi Arabia's cinematic boxing events, UFC must innovate and evolve creatively to stay on top.

When it comes to live entertainment, few can deny the UFC is the gold standard. The energy that this MMA company brings is incendiary, rivaling the NBA, NHL, NFL and MLS, at times. It's no wonder it's deemed as one of the fastest-growing brands in one of the fastest-growing sports.

Alex Pereira Teases UFC 301 Appearance With Cryptic Post

That's why ESPN paid billions to be a broadcast partner, and why bids will be entertained from the likes of Netflix when the new broadcast deal war heats up. However, while the product in Dana White's promotion is top of the line, the presentation and overall marketing leave a lot to be desired.

The UFC's Marketing Has Become Bland

There is no gripping content on a daily basis.

  • MVP has brushed off how his announcement lacked pop.
  • However, MVP he did admit his full-blown Undertaker debut was quashed by UFC's creative team.
  • Dana White also keeps pouring cold water on letting musicians perform during athlete walk-outs.

When someone has Conor McGregor's return to announce, one would assume there would be a promo. UFC 300 was a great place to air it, yet White only announced it when a piece of paper was given to him after the event. It was anticlimactic, to say the least. It followed the same mold of when Michael "Venom" Page (aka MVP) was signed as a massive Bellator coup -- White just stuffed it into a bunch of other announcements.

In general, the UFC has stopped with viral videos and rich, dynamic content after the 2016 incident where Ariel Helwani spoiled Brock Lesnar's UFC 199 return. He was escorted out with his creative team, a giant rift ensued, and since then, the UFC has tamed the marketing. Even for UFC 300, the posters and promo were very ordinary. It was not until artist, Gian Galang, dropped a fight poster and t-shirts went on sale that it felt a bit different.

Come UFC 301 in Brazil , the UFC Embedded docuseries continued on YouTube. But it has become formulaic and derivative now, when daily content, unique posters per fighter, or suited to the countries or states events are in would feel more authentic. This builds hype and buzz throughout. Organically, too. Not just during fight week. Thankfully, the Fighter Series artwork continued -- this time with Rafaella Tuma -- but again, if this is to truly resonate, consistency and volume is needed. This strategy builds brands, not one-off approaches.

Undefeated Muhammad Mokaev Questions Steve Erceg Getting UFC 301 Title Shot

Ufc's artistic drive can enhance the brand, with such a large, interesting roster, more should be done.

  • Gian Galang has 34,000 followers on Instagram and 3000+ on X.
  • The UFC can help provide more exposure and build artistic businesses.

Now, this isn't to knock UFC's documentary style. But WWE has done it for years. In fact, a lot about how the UFC has been modeled has been ripped from WWE -- something White admitted in terms of storytelling and how much Vince McMahon influenced him. It's ironic that both are now publicly traded under the Endeavor/TKO umbrella.

The advantage WWE has is that it's scripted, so it can plot content miles in advance. It can also spin stories on heroes and villains easily. The UFC has to adapt to a tougher landscape, because it's real: fighters get injured, markets get shifted, and one KO can turn a superstar into the next big thing, as seen with Steve Erceg . If the marketing is just stale graphics and the typical Embedded for PPVs, though, the brand will feel lazy, rudimentary and run-of-the-mill. It does an injustice to all these fighters from different walks of life, as well.

Working with more artists, not just digital ones, but graffiti ones from their locales would be rad. Throwing contests to crowdsource them and hear their stories of why they connect with certain fighters would work to the promotion's benefit. It would be like Corporate Social Responsibility, with an edgy twist -- providing loads of static and fluid content to show it's more than a stable of fighters or fans who just show up to yell for violence in arenas.

The promo on Galang's UFC 300 mural is already the perfect template -- something that can be adapted for sculptors, graphic designers, and the lot. This would give the company marketing material and literal assets to use, akin to when White's team hired a matchmaker from an online competition.

Arman Tsarukyan Is Looking To Be The UFC's Newest Problem Child

Ufc's marketing is stuck in the past, there is a lack of creative evolution.

  • UFC's deal with ESPN in 2018 was worth around $1.5 billion.
  • Netflix is said to be in the running along with other streamers once the rights become available.
  • WWE inked a deal worth more than $5 billion to send Monday Night Raw to Netflix.

Feeling outdated is the last thing White wants. Not when people still talk about Pride posters. Not when Rizin posters are still bangers. Not when rivals like the PFL are looking for ways to one-up the UFC. MMA Fighting judged fight posters recently with top Hollywood artist, Akiko Stehrenberger .

She illustrated posters for Oppenheimer , Dune: Part Two , etc. Now, the UFC had some good grades by her standards and metrics, but the best came from Rizin and Dream, unsurprisingly. If the UFC wants to evolve, be modern, imaginative, innovative and creative, it needs to push past older brands.

Themed posters, arthouse elements, linking to certain holidays (e.g. Mexican Independence) and such would illuminate the brand well. This moves past the use of just flags, colors and filters -- aka what UFC mostly does . As it stands, most of these elements aren't what fans or graphic designers would see as valuable collectibles, not for the price being charged.

Jake Paul vs. Dana White: Explaining This Massive Combat Sports Feud

Ufc has one major creative rival, saudi arabia's boxing project is imax-worthy gold.

  • Turki Alalshikh keeps touting his project as the mecca of boxing.
  • Fans and non-fans have taken to his style of marketing.
  • The athletes love and enjoy the showmanship of this commercial venture.

Riyadh Season's boxing is cinematic, to say the least. This pseudo-promotion drops Hollywood trailers as Turki Alalshikh keeps assembling the most entertaining fights around. The commercials for Francis Ngannou versus Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua were brilliant. They encompassed video game-style clips, CGI, and classy photography via staged shoots. This goes beyond posing with titles or just pulling clips from past fights.

The same thing has just happened with the trailer promoting Fury against Oleksandr Usyk . It looks like a Zack Snyder trailer with pirates, samurais, explosions and such. There is even a Fury vs. Usyk music video with stellar animation. Alalshikh also has comic book-homaging posters to hype the superhero aspect of this initiative. If anything, even a non-combat sports fan would be impressed. The Saudis do have deep pockets, but the UFC has money, too. It seems like the latter is resting on its laurels and is in a comfort zone.

With Riyadh Season poised to host events in England and the USA soon, it's only a matter of time before the target market White wants -- young adults with disposable income, artsy folks, podcasters, people who like content creators like Nina Drama -- view this as hip. If the UFC then tries to conjure up something, they'll be seen as reactive. It's not a nice notion as White likes to get there first. It's why he told Eddie Hearn to chill -- the UFC will be the first to use the Sphere for combat sports on Mexican Independence. White has promised something epic. But he did that for UFC 300, only to have an average main card on paper.

Ultimately, a lack of trust is not a conundrum the UFC wants to have. If the brand is rising in stock, keep elevating it. Having a monopoly on putting on the best MMA fights is no excuse to having drab marketing. The Saudis have the best boxing cards at present and the UFC could learn a thing or two about how they intend to keep building that tourism brand: with a Hollywood finish that screams elite quality.

UFC 301 storylines: Returning heroes, upset specials and fights of intrigue in Rio

The UFC heads back to Brazil on Saturday night to follow up on the wildly successful UFC 300 card. Although UFC 301 won't carry the star power of the event that preceded it, Rio de Janeiro will welcome home two of its heroes as UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja will defend his title against Steve Erceg in the main event and UFC Hall of Famer and former featherweight champion Jose Aldo comes out of retirement to face Jonathan Martinez in a bantamweight showdown.

This will be Pantoja's second title defense, and it will come against an unlikely opponent. Erceg is the UFC's No. 10-ranked flyweight. Since making his debut with the promotion less than a year ago, he has collected three wins -- including a blistering knockout of Matt Schnell in March -- and with most of the flyweights in the top 10 unavailable, Erceg looks to seize the moment and become the lowest-ranked fighter to win a title since the UFC introduced the rankings system in 2013.

Aldo steps back into action after a brief hiatus from the sport in 2022. The former featherweight kingpin tried his hand at boxing in 2023 with a majority draw against Jeremy Stephens and a unanimous decision win over Esteban Gabriel Espindola. But with one fight left on his UFC contract, Aldo returns home to test himself against the surging Martinez and his six-fight winning streak.

ESPN MMA reporters Brett Okamoto and Andreas Hale spotlight the top storylines to follow and matchups to watch during the fights this weekend.

Steve Erceg's chance to pull off a historic upset

Hale: Erceg isn't supposed to be here. Not this soon, at least. But after just three fights, he's getting the opportunity of a lifetime as the lowest-ranked fighter to challenge for a UFC title since Dan Henderson faced Michael Bisping for the middleweight championship in 2016.

Erceg didn't arrive in the UFC with much fanfare, nor did he blow fans away with his wins, aside from his second-round knockout of Matt Schnell. But there's a reason that he's just a +210 underdog, according to ESPN Bet. Erceg has the skill set to upset the apple cart and capture UFC gold.

The flyweight division has been volatile since Demetrious Johnson's exit from the UFC. Since Johnson's remarkable title reign, which saw him defend his championship 11 times from 2012 to 2017, no fighter has successfully defended the title more than twice. Pantoja already has one title defense but hasn't looked like an unbeatable force. He has holes in his striking that Erceg can exploit, and as long as "Astro Boy" can avoid being taken down, he stands a good chance of pulling off the upset.

Would it be a bigger upset than Matt Serra knocking out Georges St-Pierre at UFC 69 or Holly Holm's stunning finish of Ronda Rousey at UFC 193? Probably not. But the idea that the little-known fighter from Perth, Australia, didn't deserve the opportunity would be put to rest. Or Pantoja just runs him over, and the whole conversation is null and void.

Anthony Smith 's final run

Okamoto: Admittedly, I am extremely biased here. I've worked with Smith a lot because of his analyst role with ESPN, and I visited his camp in Denver last week to discuss his mindset around a looming retirement.

Regardless, this is still the most intriguing storyline. Smith is in such a dilemma, deciding how much he has left. Some people would look at his recent record and his last knockout loss to Khalil Rountree Jr. , and immediately say there's no reason for him to continue fighting. But at the same time, he's 35. Alex Pereira won the light heavyweight title at age 36. Jan Blachowicz won it at 37. Glover Teixeira won it at 42.

One can understand why Smith still believes a title could happen. He has taken a new approach this camp, by not focusing on the belt. He believes his obsession with it has hindered him in recent fights, and those closest to him agree. It has been a surprisingly light-hearted camp for a fight that carries such danger. His coaches are apprehensive about fighting in Brazil, which is understandable. One of his coaches described Brazil as the most hostile place in the world to win a fight. It takes its toll on food changes, sleep changes, etc. This is a massive challenge for Smith, but he's going into it confident.

And beyond that, I haven't even mentioned Vitor Petrino (11-0), who could be a serious addition to the top 10 if he goes out and dominates a veteran like Smith. There's a lot on the line for both in this one, and there will be plenty to discuss or debate afterward.

UFC 301 fights of intrigue

Michel Pereira lands big shots to Michal Oleksiejczuk's body that lead to a first-round submission victory.

Okamoto: Michel Pereira vs. Ihor Potieria . This matchmaking is a little confusing. Pereira has looked really good lately. The guy who would get attention by doing backflips during fights and looked like a .500 welterweight is long gone. Pereira is fighting with purpose and confidence. He's a brick house of an athlete who doesn't seem to forfeit any speed for it.

This wasn't his original matchup -- but even his former opponent Makhmud Muradov felt like a bit of running in place. Pereira has won seven in a row. When are we going to see him in a ranked fight? He went through this phase of fighting entertaining opponents such as Niko Price and Khaos Williams , and it became clear he had a higher ceiling than that. Let's find it out. If he can record his third straight finish in Brazil, we'll see him in a relatively big, ranked fight.

Hale: Paul Craig vs. Caio Borralho . It's time to figure out just how good Borralho is. Craig is 1-3 in his past four fights but remains a dangerous finisher who enjoys taking advantage of his opponent's defensive deficiencies. Borralho is extremely athletic and explosive, which is why he hasn't lost in the UFC in five fights. But he hasn't faced someone who presents a significant threat standing or on the ground as Craig.

Could Craig catch an overly aggressive Borralho and derail this slow-moving hype train, or will the Brazilian impress and put himself on the radar for the upper crust of the middleweight division that needs new blood? If Craig falls short, would it be safe to say his best years are behind him? There's a lot on the line for both fighters, and both should fight like this is a make-or-break situation heading into Saturday's fight.

Everything You Need to Know About Tommy Richman

Tommy Richman has a runaway hit on his hands with “Million Dollar Baby.” Here’s what you need to know about the Virginia singer.

Spring has finally sprung, and Tommy Richman already has a contender for Song of the Summer on his hands with “Million Dollar Baby.”

The song is blowing up at a very fast pace, but before any misguided “industry plant” allegations start flowing, let's set the record straight: Tommy Richman did not pop up out of nowhere. The Virginia-born singer is having a moment right now thanks to the spontaneous combustion of “Million Dollar Baby,” but he’s been making music for a while now, with some of his earliest songs on SoundCloud and Spotify dating back to 2016 .

Richman has released songs that range from R&B to punk rock over the past few years, ultimately catching the attention of Brent Faiyaz, who signed him and took him on the road last year.) He’s been steadily picking up buzz ever since, earning a spot on Complex’s R&B Artists to Watch list in January, and now he’s rising even faster with his most electric song so far: “Million Dollar Baby.” If you’re just now finding out about him, here’s a crash course on everything you need to know about Tommy Richman.

He was raised in Virginia by a legally deaf mother and a drum teacher father

presentation about ufc

Richman grew up in a suburb just outside of DC called Woodbridge, Virginia. He says he took voice lessons growing up, but there was never really music playing in his house, so he started pursuing it on his own. “My dad was a drum teacher and my mom is actually legally deaf, so she never played anything, so I just kinda did it myself,” he told Lyrical Lemonade. “I felt a connection to it and went for it.”

He is signed to Brent Faiyaz’s label

Richman has a close relationship with Brent Faiyaz, signing to his independent label ISO Supremacy in 2023 and opening up for him on the F*ck the World, It's a Wasteland tour. “Million Dollar Baby” was released through ISO in partnership with PULSE Records, and the two singers have already worked together on music (Richman appeared on “Upset” from  Brent’s last album, Larger Than Life). Richman has cited the fellow DMV singer as one of his inspirations, and he’s released a steady flow of new music on the label, including his last EP, The Rush, in 2023.

He makes music in a variety of genres

A lot of people are getting to know  Richman right now because of  “Million Dollar Baby,” but he’s been making music that ranges from R&B to rap and punk for the past 8 years. Some of his early songs, including “Ballin Stallin,” “Penelope Terrel,” and “Silent Hill” skew more alt-R&B and rap, while other tracks like “LIKETHATSHIT” sound like they’re meant for underground raves and mosh pits. A lot of his songs take influence from funk music, as well, including the recently-released single “Selfish.”

His mantra is “everything is punk”

Richman’s YouTube bio, the name of his website, and the name of his underground concert series is “everything is punk,” which started out as an inside joke with his friends. “It was a thing that I just put in my bio as a joke,” Richman told Annabelle Kline on That Good Shit. “Then my friend Donnie Killjoy, we were in a group chat, and he was like ‘Everything is punk!’ as a joke, and everybody started saying it. So it became a thing in our friend group, and we wanted to do a show in LA, so we just called it that… we’re just trying to build that out. I’m trying to get a UFC fighter in a robe to shadowbox on stage with synth music in the background.”

He really likes the UFC

A source close to Richman tells Complex that the singer has a deep passion for the UFC, to the point where he has memorized “every UFC card.” Apparently, if you call out a specific card number, he can tell you who fought that night. In his interview with Annabelle Kline , Richman revealed that he hopes to do a show and have UFC fighters shadowbox onstage while he performs someday.

His inspirations include Dennis Rodman, Andy Serkis, and Buzz Lightyear(?)

Individual in hood and jacket with embroidered details, leaning forward with a focused expression

In 2022, Richman tweeted that his three inspirations are Andy Serkis, Dennis Rodman, and Buzz Lightyear. In an interview with Lyrical Lemonade , he described Rodman as “one of the most punk people ever,” explaining, “During his time, to be as metro, and athletic, and different, and fashionable and partying as hard as he did was ridiculous. I mean he played on the best basketball team ever, was defensive player of the year, and was outside fucking Carmen Electra in Vegas every other night. I wanna interview Dennis Rodman one day.” Richman says that he’s inspired by actor and filmmaker Andy Serkis because of his roles as Golem in Lord of the Rings and Ceasar in the Planet of the Apes remake. As for Buzz Lightyear? Well, the jury’s still out on that one, but Richman does have an affinity for things that he thinks are “punk” (including Jesus Christ, apparently ) so maybe the fictional astronaut fits the description for him.

He’s also influenced by Pharrell

presentation about ufc

In addition to the aforementioned names, Richman also looks up to Pharrell. Both hail from Virginia, and Richman told Lyrical Lemonade that he admires the music legend because of his approach to the craft. “People like Pharrell inspire me, because he was talking to Rick Rubin, and [explaining that] it’s not just about music theory, but more about how it feels —how the chords make you feel more than how they fit together,” he explained. During his interview with That Good Shit , Richman spontaneously brought up P’s name again while talking about how he’d approach a hypothetical Ice Spice collab, saying he'd try to be “on some Pharrell stuff” over a drill beat.

Rumors for the Day:
