Headstrong – Charlotte Walsh, Petra Aghware, Caragh Geoghegan and Claire Taylor – Transition Year students

Presentation College attended the launch of programme addressing Ireland’s teen suicide rate and mental health illness stigma. Presentation College are among the first in Ireland to implement a new mental health programme  – HEADSTRONG in association with Cycle Against Suicide – to address the stigma of suicide amongst young people.

Charlotte Walsh, Petra Aghware, Caragh Geoghegan and Claire Taylor, Transition Year students, attended the launch of the school programme in Dublin on 4th October with their Guidance Counsellor, Ms Marie Cumiskey. They joined other schools from across Ireland for the introduction of the pilot programme, which will be rolled out within the selected schools in the coming months.

Caroline Lafferty, CEO of Cycle Against Suicide added: “We have worked with the Mental Health Commission of Canada to introduce HEADSTRONG to our schools here in Ireland as we believe that this programme is invaluable in helping younger people to be brave and speak up about mental health. “It’s a powerful, evidence-based programme that has already won international awards, and with the help of our selected schools we’re hoping that the pilot programme will be a huge success, with the aim of rolling out HEADSTRONG across all Irish secondary schools within the coming years. This is a core part of our mission in addressing mental health in younger people, which is currently at an alarming level in Ireland.”

Its introduction to Ireland comes through a partnership between Cycle Against Suicide and the Mental Health Commission of Canada.  At its core, HEADSTRONG works to reduce the painful stigma experienced by children and young people living with mental health problems and illnesses. It will teach students how to reduce stigma, become mental health champions in their schools, and the programme challenges students to examine the dangers of stereotypes and the harm created by stigma. According to UNICEF’s latest report card on child well-being “Ireland has the fourth highest teen suicide rate in the EU/OECD region.” The report card warns that one in 10,000 Irish youths aged 15-19 will die by suicide. The report further shows that in younger teens, aged 11-15, “more than 22% report having experienced two or more psychological symptoms more than once a week.”

On Thursday, October 4, 2018, Cycle Against Suicide convened the first HEADSTRONG summit at the Honourable Society of the Kings Inns, Constitution Hill in Dublin which was attended by young people from twenty-one schools across the country, Presentation College being the sole Carlow representative. Summits are the anchor of HEADSTRONG. They educate and empower young people to become mental health champions and mobilizes them to return to their schools and communities and engage and educate their peers to also become mental health champions, driving true change in the area of stigma.

Presentation College Awards Academic Excellence

The Prefect programme for this year is up and running in Presentation College with twenty-four enthusiastic, passionate and dynamic Prefects!

The programme began with a training day at the start of the school year in the Seven Oaks Hotel led by Stuart Wilson of ZestLife. The Prefects spent the day building up confidence, breaking down barriers and realising that if the “why” is big enough, the “how” doesn’t matter!

Over the coming months, Prefects will be representing the school at several events such as the School Musical, Open Night, Parent-Teacher Meetings as well as organising a number of exciting events within the school.

The Prefects always strive to be excellent ambassadors for the school and to embody what it means to be a student in Presentation College.

German Embassy Invite

presentation college carlow news

Pictured in the photo are Meadhbh, Frau Dagmar Potzel – the German Ambassador and Ms. Una Byrne.

Ms. Una Byrne – one of the German teachers at Presentation College and Meadhbh Broderick – the winner of last year’s German Olympiad, were both invited recently by the German Ambassador to a reception to celebrate twenty-eight years of German Unity.

The Ambassador hosted a wonderful garden party for invited guests, German companies operating in Ireland and the many companies and businesses which trade with Germany as well as the organisations that actively promote the German language. The importance of building links between the two countries and the need for more Irish people to learn German were spoken about. Guests were also treated to an afternoon of entertainment, fine food and wine and networking opportunities.

On Monday, 15 th October, “Maths Week” began in Presentation College.

During Maths Week, students had the opportunity to participate in presentations, quizzes and competitions in which students won prizes for their efforts.

There was also a question for each day of the week and students were encouraged to participate by answering the questions. The students found the quizzes a lot of fun to do. Many of them won prizes in the various competitions, which made it all the more worthwhile for their efforts.

The highlight of the week was a Maths Workshop that was held in Carlow Institute of Technology. Transition Year students attended the workshop, which was presented by an expert in the area of mathematics, namely Colin Wright, who came all the way from England to give this very informative lecture on patterns and predictions.

He enriched his mathematical lecture with moments of juggling and joking to the amusement of the students. They were delighted in this more informal way of presenting answers to mathematical problems because of the practical way in which Colin presented his work. Students also found this very easy to understand.

Thanks to his friendly approach and expertise, students were able to discover Maths from a different and more interesting perspective.

We need to remember that Maths is a continuously evolving subject which gives us many opportunities to solve unsolved mathematical problems. We cannot forget that there are still six unsolved millennium mathematical problems, for each of which there is a prize of a million dollars for the one who comes up with the answer.

Overall, I would say that most students who took part in “Maths Week” not only benefited greatly from the experience, but they also enjoyed the week hugely.

Damian Korus, Transition Year.

Meitheal Leaders

Our Meitheal Team this year consists of ten joyous, loving and lively Leaders! Together as a Meitheal Team this year they have successfully executed activities for the First Year students from a Table Quiz to a Disco. The Meitheal Team have created an environment for the First Year students that is fun and enjoyable to be in.

The First Year Disco on 5 th October was held in the school and attended by over five hundred First Year students from Meitheal schools in Carlow. The Disco started at 8:00pm and finished at 10:30pm and was thoroughly enjoyed by all students and Meitheal Leaders present.

A few days before that a Table Quiz was held in the school Library for the First Year students in our school by the Meitheal Leaders. The winners received free tickets to the disco.

The Meitheal Leaders will also be shortly participating in Zumba dance classes with the First Year students.

The Meitheal Team have built strong bonds of friendship between themselves and their First Year charges and the Meitheal programme is running very smoothly thanks to the cooperation and care between the Meitheal Leaders, First Year students and the staff in Presentation College.

Girls Futsal

presentation college carlow news

Presentation College Team: Ciara Kelly, Aoife Kelly, Sarah Nolan, Beckie-Lou White, Nina Uwagbai, Ellie Dowling, Orla Woods, Katie Carroll, Amy Reid and Maya Brennan.

The girls First Year Futsal team travelled to St. Leo’s College, Carlow recently to take part in the Carlow Qualifiers Futsal Blitz. The girls’ constant effort and determination saw them overcome two teams from St. Leo’s and one team from Gaelcholáiste to qualify for the Leinster finals.

The team will travel with Ms. Ryan and Mr. Clonan to Abbotstown in Dublin on 21 st November where they will represent Carlow in the Leinster Finals. We would like to take this opportunity to wish them the best of luck in this competition.

Boys Futsal

Two of our First Year Boys Futsal teams travelled to Tullow Community School recently to take part in the Carlow Qualifiers Futsal Blitz. Both teams displayed some fantastic skills and determination but it was our Team A who were victorious on the day. They won all of their matches and sailed through to the Leinster Finals.

Team A will now travel with Ms. Ryan and Mr. Clonan to Abbotstown in Dublin on 22 nd November where they will represent Carlow in the Leinster Finals. We would like to take this opportunity to wish them the best of luck in this competition.

Also a big thank you to Pádraig Thompson and Daniel Hegarty from Transition Year who helped out on the day.

Brendan Hayden, Carlow’s’ GAA Development Administrator, has been introducing Pella and Resistance Training to some of the First Year PE classes during September and October. All students have enjoyed it.

Junior Hurling C1 Carlow Final

Our Junior hurlers run in the School’s Championship has come to an end with defeat at the hands of Knockbeg College in the Carlow C1 final. Having faced the same opposition two weeks ago with a missed penalty in the dying seconds denying us a victory, hopes were high of reversing the defeat suffered in the final twelve months ago.

In a game similar to last year’s decider, the first half was a tense affair with little to choose between the sides. Knockbeg signalled their attacking intent early on with the placement of Laois native Ian Shanahan at the edge of the square. However, he was well marshalled throughout by the impressive Jack Dunne at full back. Andrew Murphy and Pádraig Thompson worked hard in the first half to supply our forwards with quality ball and we were rewarded inside five minutes with a clinical score from wing forward Mark Fitzgerald. Arduous work from our inside line of Josh Hughes and Stephen Lacey tested the Knockbeg full back-line and were unlucky not to manufacture further scores. Indeed a bullet from Lacey drew a fine save from the Knockbeg No. 1 as the half drew to a close.

Trailing 0-5 to 0-1 at the interval our boys needed to start the second half strongly but unfortunately it was Knockbeg who kicked on and fired in the first of two goals inside the opening minutes. The Pres responded with two well taken frees to keep the contest alive but that was as good as it got. Pressure continued to mount but to their credit the backs held firm, in particular the tenacious David Jacob at corner back who was immense throughout. A special mention must also go to First Year student Conor Treacy who pulled off incredible saves when goals looked a certainty. The Setanta shot stopper has been a revelation for the Pres in goal this year.

Despite another final defeat, hurling is certainly on the rise in the school as comprehensive victories were secured in the C1 blitz against CBS, Tullow CS and Hacketstown with Second Year students Oisin Pagnier, Paul Fitzgerald and Terry French scoring heavily on the day. Attention will now turn to the senior hurling finals which are due to be played after the Halloween break.

Road Safety Authority

Presentation College welcomed the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to the school and all of the senior classes and some junior classes had an opportunity to experience the highly impressive Road Safety Interactive Shuttle. Students tested their speed and capabilities at simulated driving, experienced break-through virtual reality software, digital screens and simulated motorbike, bicycle and cars. The RSA staff gave a very informative and hard-hitting talk to each group on the importance of all aspects of road safety, addressing key issues such as never getting into a car with someone who has been drinking alcohol, never using a mobile phone while driving, and the importance as pedestrians and cyclists of being visible to drivers by wearing high visibility jackets, bag covers, arm bands and bike lights. Senior students experienced the roll over car simulator, allowing them to experience the importance of wearing seat belts at all times, and tightening the belt once fastened in order to minimise injuries in the event of a collision. Students were very impressed with their experience on both the simulator and interactive shuttle and it created valuable learning for all involved. We extend huge thanks to the remarkable RSA staff team – especially Ciarán and Alexandra – and to Ms Gillespie, Deputy Principal, for arranging the RSA visit.

Softball Cruises to Doubleheader Sweep of Carlow

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Carlow on Friday afternoon on Conrady Field, with both games being called early due to Geneva's big margins.   The Golden Tornadoes won both games by scores of 12-1 and 12-4.   Geneva improved to 17-13 with the victories.

Sophomore Sophia Tvaroch got the start in the circle in game one, and the Golden Tornadoes gave her lots of early run support, not that she needed much.

Freshman Molly Shelley opened the bottom of the first with a single.   She went to second on an error, and then she stole third and came home when the throw from the catcher went into left field.   Two batters later, senior Julia Hart doubled, and she scored another run on junior Megan Gray's RBI-single.

Geneva broke the game open in the second inning, scoring seven times as the first eight batters reached base.   Sophomore Madison Rapp opened the inning with a double, followed by a walk to sophomore Alex Guzman .   Freshman Kyra Wilcox reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, and Shelley drove home the first run with an RBI-single.   Sophomore Lexi Zanic followed with a walk to drive in a run, and Hart and Gray followed with RBI-singles.   Two Carlow errors later in the inning allowed three more runs to score.

The Golden Tornadoes added three more runs in the third inning on an RBI-doubles from Gray and sophomore Jorja Koerner , while Rapp drove in the third run with an RBI-single.

Tvaroch was taken out after three no-hit innings to give her some rest, and sophomore Alena Campbell pitched the final two innings, picking up her first career victory, 12-1.

Gray had the big game offensively for Geneva, going 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.   Shelley, Hart and Rapp each added two hits apiece.

Sophomore McKenzie Rapp got the start in the circle in game two, and the offense stayed hot with six first-inning runs.   Shelley opened the frame with a double, and she stole third and came home on an RBI-groundout from Zanic.   Hart, Gray and freshman Aliya Ottaviani each followed with doubles to produce two more runs.   Junior Alyssa Lenzi drove in the fourth run with a single, Shelley picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded walk, and freshman Alexa Forsythe scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Geneva added two more runs in the bottom of the second on a 2-RBI double from Forsythe.

Carlow got on the board in the third inning with two runs, but Geneva scored three more times in the fourth inning to take an 11-2 lead.   Forsythe, sophomore Payton James and freshman Callie Mangan each had RBI-singles in the inning.

Carlow added two runs in the top of the fifth against Geneva relief pitching, but the Golden Tornadoes ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with a run.   Lenzi led off with a single, and freshman pinch runner Kyra Wilcox scored the final run when she stole second and came home when the throw went into the outfield.

Rapp improved her record to 7-2 this season, pitching four innings while giving up just two runs, striking out five.

Offensively, Hart added three more hits to her day's tally, while Forsythe delivered two hits and three RBIs.   Lenzi also contributed two hits in the win.

Geneva gets right back into action tomorrow with an important road doubleheader at Bethany, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Friends and family, staff, students and past graduates of Carlow College were in attendance for what was an engaging and entertaining evening. The night opened with members of the third year creative writing class presenting some of their writing, which provided a dramatic, moving and varied showcase of their work.

Lecturer in English and poetry Dr Derek Coyle announced the winners of the poetry category, while Dr Eoghan Smith, lecturer in creative writing presented the best prose awards.

Dr Coyle said: “How exciting it is to see the next generation of young Irish writers discover their voices. So varied and with so much to say. The Literary Awards helps provide them with a platform. This event is organised along fully professional lines and gives our students a valuable insight into, and first-hand experience of, how literary competitions work and what is involved in being active on the literary scene.”

Following the awards, Ms Ní Churreáin commended the entrants on the high standard of their work and encouraged all participants to keep persevering and working hard at refining and improving their craft. A spellbound audience heard her read a selection of work from across her career, with a focus on her recently published pamphlet Ghostgirl .  Her work places women’s experience at the centre and imaginatively explores what it might have been like to live in one of Ireland’s state-run institutions. After a question and answer session, Carlow College students with literary ambitions were left with plenty to consider and with the doors of inspiration opened.

Poole College Announces Inaugural Student Award Winners

From leadership to resilience to all-around excellence, these six students embody the college's spirit — and our mission to make the world a better place to live and work.

collage of Poole College student award winners

Poole College students are exceptional in and out of the classroom, living the  college’s values  in a number of different ways. With the support of generous donors, we have created several awards to recognize students graduating in May whose outstanding efforts have contributed to the success of Poole College.

“Poole College has amazing students and I am so glad that we recognize some of them who have excelled in different ways,” says Vikas Anand, associate dean for academic programs. “The winners are judged not only on their academics but also on factors such as how they overcame adversity, their leadership of others and impact on the community. These students represent many of the key values of the college, and we are proud that in a few weeks we will be calling them our alumni.”

The awards are made possible by an endowment established by Poole alumnus Alex Darden (’98, Business Administration) in honor of his father, Jim.

“NC State was a foundational part of my life,” Darden says. “It’s important to try to make sure others have a similar opportunity. I also wanted a way to honor my dad. This seemed like a good opportunity to do that.”

The inaugural award winners will be celebrated at an April 24 ceremony in Nelson Hall.

Andrew C. Ciofalo, a veteran newspaperman who established the journalism program at Loyola University Maryland and also directed an American study-abroad education company, died March 7 of undetermined causes at Moscow City Hospital No. 67. He was 89.

The former Towson resident had lived in Russia for the last five years with his wife of many years, Dr. Olga Timofeeva, a neuroscientist.

“Professor Ciofalo helped to inspire my passion for journalism. He encouraged me to take on leadership roles in our college newspaper and he taught me the importance of an independent press that holds people and institutions in power to account,” wrote Trif Alatzas, publisher and editor-in-chief of The Baltimore Sun, in an email.

Kevin M. Atticks, Maryland secretary of agriculture, had also been a student of Professor Ciofalo.

“He was a rare combination of practitioner and visionary,” Mr. Atticks wrote in an email. “His friendship, humor and mentorship was omnipresent, and his lifelong commitment to experiential education ran deep.”

Andrew Carmine Ciofalo, son of Andrew C. Ciofalo Sr., a tile mason and artisan, and his wife, Frances, a retail manager, was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and was a graduate of Salesian High School on Staten Island.

Professor Ciafalo earned a bachelor’s degree in English and philosophy from Brooklyn College and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

He began his newspaper career in 1955 as an editorial assistant for the New York Daily News, and after graduating from Columbia, was named managing editor of Manhattan East, a New York city weekly community newspaper. He had been a contributor to the old Brooklyn Eagle.

From 1962 to 1969, he had been an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia Journalism; an editorial consultant to Circus Magazine; a senior writer for Custom Book Publishers; a managing editor of Clyde Magazine, a general men’s magazine; and a radio news writer for the old New York Herald Tribune.

Professor Ciafalo was a lecturer in journalism at Brooklyn College from 1962 to 1972 and director of development at the New York Institute of Technology.

From 1970 to 1976, he was director of college relations and development at Bronx Community College. While there, he established a university housing initiative, the University Heights Development Corp., that renovated off-campus dormitories as senior citizen housing.

In 1981, he served as an editor and writer for McGraw Hill, where he wrote a newsletter, “This Month In Telecommunications.”

Professor Ciofalo was hired in 1983 by Loyola where he established what is now its Communication Department.

“Andy Ciofalo was an energetic and innovative member of the Communication Department faculty at Loyola, where he founded the journalism and editing track,” wrote John E. McIntyre, former copy desk chief and assistant managing editor at The Sun, in an email.

“He was intimately involved in the creation of the book editing track and establishment of the student-run publisher Apprentice House Press,” wrote Mr. McIntyre, who was an adjunct professor for more than 20 years at Loyola where he taught editing. “I was invited twice to participate in his summer program in Cagli in Italy’s Marche. Over four weeks undergraduates did interviews, wrote stories, took photographs and created online content. He was a huge encourager of students and faculty.”

Professor Ciofalo had a knack for recruiting students.

“Andy single-handedly altered the trajectory of my life and career,” Mr. Atticks wrote. “Toward the end of my freshman year, I was leaving a music class contemplating a music major when the elevator door opened and there was Andy.

“After a quick two-flight conversation, Andy had convinced me to give journalism and publishing a try. It worked. Now 30 years later, I’m leading the very publishing house Andy envisioned, Apprentice House Press, that would provide book industry experience for our students, and have built a career founded on communication.”

“He leaves a legacy of teaching so many aspiring journalists over the years and I feel fortunate that our paths crossed,” Mr. Alatzas wrote.

In 2002, he founded the Cagli Program in International Reporting, and since 2005, Professor Ciofalo had been president of the Institute for Education in International Media — ieiMedia LLC — which operates the Cagli Program as an independent entity, and includes partnerships with Marquette University, Temple University and Gonzaga University.

The institute also includes experimental projects in Italy, Northern Ireland, China, Spain, Israel and Turkey, in partnership with San Francisco State University, Iowa State University, James Madison University, University of Jamestown, Cal State University Fullerton, Guangxi Normal University and Hebrew University.

After 30 years at Loyola, he retired in 2013, and moved to Venice, Florida.

Reflecting on his tenure in a Sun op-ed piece in 2023, Professor Ciofalo wrote:

“Would I do anything different today? Of course I would. I would work with students to engage intellectually with the issues facing journalism now. Never has the threat been so terminal,” he wrote.

“But also there never have been more platforms to which we must adapt without losing the meaning of journalism for our society. We are living in a selfie world where ego supersedes the truth of objectivity. Even more challenging, a mind-altered society cannot distinguish between the real world and fantasy. If there is an audience out there, we have to find it — and nurture it.”

When he wasn’t writing, teaching or lecturing, Professor Ciofalo enjoyed traveling. He was also a frequent contributor to The Sun and other newspapers.

“He loved Italy and cooking and eating, and was also a great cook himself,” said his daughter, Terri Ciofalo, of Champaign, Illinois. “He was also a baritone tenor and enjoyed singing.”

Last month, in a blog post , Professor Ciofalo contemplated the lede, or opening paragraph, of his obituary, and had written several suggested entries.

His headline was “Old and Productive — Gone today,” and he had written:

“Prof. Emeritus Andrew Ciofalo, who actively ran his American study-abroad education company well into his 90’s, died today at age 98 while living obscurely on financial fumes in Moscow, Russia.”

Under a second headline, “He Coulda Been Somebody,” he had written: “The prideful young man who was once called ‘the best writer’ in his Columbia graduate journalism class by the revered Prof. Larry Pinkham, died today at age 98 in Moscow, Russia — never having lived up to those expectations. But Prof. Andrew Ciofalo did pivot into an innovative career in journalism education where he helped others fulfill his faded dream.”

Plans for services to be held in the chapel on the Loyola campus are incomplete.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Timofeeva, and daughter, he is survived by a son, David Andrew Ciofalo of Roland Park; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Lynn Tosh of Roland Park; a brother, Thomas Ciofalo of Ramsey, New Jersey; and four grandchildren. Earlier marriages to Linda Stivak and Judith Dobler, ended in divorce.

Guitar legend and Allman Brothers Band co-founder Dickey Betts has died at age 80. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer wrote the band's biggest hit, “Ramblin’ Man.” Manager David Spero told The Associated Press that Betts died early Thursday at his home in Osprey, Florida. He says Betts had been battling cancer for more than a year and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Betts shared lead guitar duties with Duane Allman in the original Allman Brothers Band to help give the group its distinctive sound and create a new genre: Southern rock. Acts ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Kid Rock were influenced by the Allmans’ music, which combined blues, country, R&B and jazz with ’60s rock.
